Sounds-Write

At Allambie Heights Public School, we teach phonics using a linguistic phonics program called Sounds-Write , an evidence-based program developed in the United Kingdom.

Sounds-Write is a very highly structured, multi-sensory, incremental and code-oriented, instructional approach to teaching children to read and spell. The Sounds-Write program is implemented in the classroom and provides very fast and effective teaching for children at all levels.

We are proud to be one of the few Sounds-Write Training Schools providing outstanding phonics teaching for training purposes as well as taster mornings, introducing the Sounds- Write program. This program is successful in teaching children to read and spell because it starts with what all children know from a very young age – the sounds of our spoken language. Then, using a very systematic approach, it teaches them how these sounds  are coded within our writing system.

Implementation:

Children at our school will be sure to tell you how much they enjoy their Sounds-Write lessons. Its structure and simplicity makes it a program accessible to all learners and helps them to make excellent progress with their reading and spelling.

Sounds-Write promotes the use of multi-sensory engagement with the materials appropriate to  the level and abilities of the children being taught. Visual, auditory and kinaesthetic activities  are at all times combined simultaneously to promote learning. Sounds-Write also enables teachers to differentiate the challenges placed before the learner in order to meet their individual needs.

The four key concepts children are taught are:

1.                letters are symbols that represent sounds

2.                sounds can be spelled using 1, 2, 3 or 4 letters

3.                the same sound can be spelled in different ways

4.                the same spelling can represent different sounds

The three key skills children need to master reading and spelling are:

1.                blending

2.                segmenting

3.                phoneme manipulation

Children in Kindergarten begin with the Initial Code where they practice all 3 key skills whilst learning the 1:1 sound-spelling correspondences and securing their understanding of key concept 1. This builds up confidence and phonic knowledge in a truly reversible system, enabling them to decode and encode a wide range of words and sentences. At first, children  learn to read and write simple one syllable words with a CVC structure. Complexity of word structure systematically builds up so that children apply their code knowledge to monosyllabic words with up to 6 sounds.

Once the Initial Code has been mastered, children continue to practice all 3 key skills whilst learning Extended Code which explores key concepts 2, 3 and 4. Learning of the Extended Code is a lifelong process – we all continue to develop our understanding of this code whenever we encounter new words. Which is why Sounds-Write can be applied across all grades in our school. Whilst learning the Extended Code, children read and write monosyllabic and polysyllabic words at an age-appropriate level.

Our K-6 learning and support program focusses on small group support for children who require additional consolidation of the classroom program so that all learners can reach their reading and spelling potential.

MAUREEN McDANIELL  B.Ed.

Maureen is a registered teacher who was concerned at the declining literacy standards in schools. In 2011 she decided to specialise in teaching foundation literacy with an intervention program that would provide primary school students with their best prospects for success. The program is Sounds - Write, which had been created as a mainstream tool for whole classroom teaching but worked seamlessly as an intervention method.

As a graduate from the first Sounds-Write training with John Walker in Western Australia in 2013 Maureen rapidly found she was in demand and now, online training has increased that demand.

As an experienced practitioner and trainer, Maureen brings to her Sounds - Write training a practical, in-depth understanding of the challenges facing teachers and parents in delivering effective literacy programs in schools and at home.

Helen is a Specialist literacy tutor and Sounds-Write trainer. Her interest in literacy and linguistic phonics stemmed from working with her severely dyslexic daughter fifteen years ago.

In 2011, realising the lack of local specialist literacy support for families in similar circumstances, she set up a tutoring service to support primary and secondary students struggling to acquire literacy skills. Since completing her training with John Walker in Perth 2013, she has been using Sounds-Write in her practice to successfully tutor individual students on a weekly basis.

Based in Margaret River, Helen delivers Sounds-Write courses across the South West region of Western Australia and other remote regional areas. She also provides post-training coaching to schools and other education professionals.

What is Sounds-Write?

If you have heard your speech pathologist talking about the term Sounds-Write, you may be wondering what it is and how it will help.

Sounds Write is a phonics program developed to support children with learning the literacy skills involved in reading and writing.

The program takes a stepped approach and focusses on ensuring that the foundations of literacy skills are taught well first before progressing into longer words or different word structures.

The initial steps involve learning the correspondence between letter names/formation and the sounds made by the letters. Throughout the program, the focus remains on learning the SOUNDS that letters make and not learning the names of the letters.  The program progresses through spelling and reading consonant-vowel-consonant words (e.g., sit) to words containing consonant clusters (e.g., scr ap) and ultimately to words containing vowel diagraphs (when two vowel letters together create one vowel sound, e.g., coin).

Some of the activities involved in teaching the sounds write program include:

  • Word building – this involves arranging letter tiles into words, which helps to support children who may be having difficulties with the motor skills involved in writing
  • Sound swap – this involves changing words that have been built during the word building activity into other words (e.g., sit → hit → him). Doing this helps to develop flexibility and the skills involved with manipulating sounds in words.
  • Word spelling – this involves spelling words from the relevant word lists with the key prompt being “say the sounds and write the word”
  • Word reading – this involves reading words from the relevant word list. Again the focus remains on segmenting the words into the individual letter sounds (e.g., Sam → ssss aaa mmm)
  • Writing to dictation – writing a sentence presented verbally by the speech pathologist

Some of the pros of the Sounds Write Program include the fact that:

  • It follows an errorless learning approach – this means that the program will be as supportive as the child needs and teach through getting answers correct rather than through making mistakes. This can be critical for children learning literacy as we know that confidence (or lack of) can make a huge difference in a child’s receptiveness to learning
  • It is highly structured, meaning that skills are not missed and that all critical literacy foundations are taught. This is essential as speech pathologists frequently assess children who have been learning later literacy skills at school but who are lacking the early skills required to form high quality literacy knowledge.
  • It has homework packages that can be provided to you so that you can support your child’s literacy skill learning between sessions.

If you are interested in learning more about the Sounds Write Program or any other speech pathology interventions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at Hanrahan Health via our website, by sending us email at [email protected] or giving us a call on (02) 4862 5063 .
