Master of Engineering students
The M.Eng program is self-funded and prospective students may look into work-study and government student funding or a student line of credit through their banking institution to support their financial needs while in the program. M.Eng students are generally not eligible for awards or scholarships, except where indicated.
M.Eng students are eligible to apply for TAships and the SGS Financial Aid & Advising Office is a resource for realistic budgeting. Financial advisors can also assist in uncovering additional sources of funding through loans and grants. Finally, the UofT Centre for Career Exploration and Education is a resource for students seeking work and career advice.
Funding Administration
Students must report any change in immigration status to the MIE Graduate Studies Office and to the MIE Payroll Office (MC134A), as this may affect the tuition a student pays, and thus the funding that will be provided. Students are responsible for paying tuition and fees from their scholarship, RA, and MIE fellowship funding. RA and fellowship funding are administered as follows:
MIE fellowship payments
MIE fellowship payments are processed on ACORN by the MIE Graduate Office, in two installments: FALL and WINTER. There is no SUMMER installment.
The FALL fellowship installment is equivalent to the total fellowship for September to August divided by 12 and multiplied by 4 (total fellowship/12*4). Students must be registered in the Fall term to receive the Fall installment. The Fall installment is processed on the last Monday of October and is made available to students via direct deposit.
The WINTER fellowship installment is equivalent to the total fellowship for September to August divided by 12 and multiplied by 8 (total fellowship/12*8). Students must be registered in the Winter term to receive the Winter installment. The Winter installment is processed on the last Friday of February, and is first applied to tuition and/or any outstanding charges; any remaining credit is refunded to the student via direct deposit.
Students are required to set up direct deposit banking on ACORN to receive fellowship payments securely and quickly, as mailed cheques may take weeks to reach students. See the Managing Your Award page on the SGS website for more information.
RA payments
RA payments are processed by the MIE Payroll Office (MC 134A). These are deposited monthly to a student’s bank account. Students must contact the MIE Payroll Office to set up direct deposit.
Currently, the RA payment system and the Fellowship payment system are separate. Banking information must be provided to both the Business office for RA and entered into ACORN to receive Fellowship.
MIE students may take up to 2 weeks (10 business days) away from the lab with supervisory permission without a reduction in RA. It is critical that students consult with their supervisor as early as possible when planning vacation time.
Parental Leave
Graduate students on parental leave do not receive any benefits from MIE and should apply to SGS for a parental grant. The SGS Parental Grant provides a benefit of up to 3 terms for primary parent and up to 2 terms for second parent. Parental leave must be taken within the first 12 months of the arrival of your new addition.
TAs may be eligible for up to 35 weeks of employment benefits according to the CUPE 1 agreement .
Non-Parental Leave
Graduate students do not receive any funding from MIE while on approved leave. Please consult with the MIE graduate office if you are considering a leave of absence for illness or any other reason.

The Faculty covers tuition and fees for all students, domestic and international, for the first five years of the program. In addition, a typical student receives a minimum base funding of $18,500 for 4 years, which comes in the form of a Teaching Assistantship (TAship) and Faculty scholarship. In some cases, faculty members use grants to fund a student’s base funding, including tuition and fees, which can exceed the minimum funding. If a student receives a SSHRC or NSERC Doctoral Fellowship of $15,000 or greater, the Faculty provides an additional $5,000 excellence award (for a total of $20,000) in the first four years of the program, which replaces the normal minimum funding allocation. In all cases, students build on their base funding by receiving Research Assistantships (RAships), external grants, awards, scholarships, fellowships, and additional TAships from any unit across campus. These do not affect a student’s base funding package.
The Faculty pays tuition and fees in the 5th year for all students in good standing. Any student who previously accepted a TAship is guaranteed a TAship in their 5th year and subsequent years. The Faculty does not provide a scholarship in the 5 th year. However, students can apply for a one-time dissertation completion award in their final year of the program. As in previous years, students can receive additional external grants, awards, scholarships, fellowships, RAships, and additional TAships from any unit across campus.
General Terms and Conditions
In order to be considered for funding, all PhD students must:
- Be registered full-time and maintain good academic standing in the Faculty of Information during the academic period for which funding is granted.
- Apply to available teaching assistant and research assistantship positions within the Faculty of Information and other units at the University of Toronto.
- Apply for external student funding each year. Common external funding sources include competitive scholarships such as SSHRC and OGS.
- Abide by all the terms and conditions of any awards received.
The Faculty of Information follows the policy for maximum acceptable time spent on employment as defined by the Council of Ontario Universities:
Full-time graduate students are expected to pursue their graduate degree on a full-time basis and make satisfactory progress toward timely completion of all program requirements. It is not possible, or desirable, for the university to monitor and enforce the employment activities of its graduate students outside the university. However, it is both possible and desirable for the university to ensure that it does not itself create a structural situation that jeopardizes the ability of the graduate student to make full-time progress towards the completion of graduate program requirements. Accordingly, OCGS is committed to the principle that full-time graduate students are employed no more than an average of 10 hours per week on campus.
Eligibility
The funding package is available to all students who:
- Are registered as full-time PhD students. The funding package is not available to those enrolled in the flex-time program;
- Are in good academic standing;
- Are in years 1–4 of the PhD program. Determination of year of study is defined by the University of Toronto record which reflects any officially documented leaves of absence.
- Do not have a major scholarship (e.g., SSHRC, OGS, MITACS, NSERC);
- Are, apart from approved absence, geographically available to visit the campus regularly;
- Apply to Teaching Assistant job postings. If no TA applications are submitted students will not be eligible to receive this portion of the funding package;
- Accept offered TA subsequent appointments as governed by the CUPE3902 Collective Agreement. Participation in Teaching and Research Assistantships is optional but failure to participate will void this aspect of the funding package.

Funding for doctoral students who hold major external awards
For students in the funded cohort who receive an external, competitively-reviewed award valued at or over $15,000 per annum (e.g.: OGS, SSHRC, MITACS, NSERC, NSF), that award will stand in lieu of the stipend portion of the University’s Funding Commitment package.
Students with these awards are exempt from the Funding Commitment package requirements that they serve as teaching or research assistants.
The Faculty of Information will continue to meet either domestic or international tuition fees* (as appropriate for the student), and in recognition of their success, the Faculty will award them an Academic Excellence Award of $2,000 for each year that they hold the external award, and remain in the funded cohort.
These students continue to be eligible to work as teaching or research assistants if they wish to supplement their funds, and if the Faculty has available TA positions. - 2024-2025 Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) – International

- Student Awards & Funding Opportunities
The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program encourages excellence in graduate studies at publicly-assisted universities in Ontario. Since 1975, the OGS program has been providing merit-based scholarships to Ontario’s best graduate students in all disciplines of academic study. The scholarship program at U of T is jointly funded by the Province of Ontario and the University of Toronto. The Province allocates OGS awards to universities specifying the number of awards that each may offer to their students annually.
The Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) allocated 22 OGS awards to the University for International students this year. Accordingly, each graduate unit will receive a quota, ranging from 1-3 applications to be submitted to and adjudicated centrally by SGS.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Hold a valid study permit effective as of the graduate units’ OGS (international) application deadline; COVID-19 exception: Currently registered international graduate students who have not yet been able to obtain a study permit due to COVID-19 circumstances are eligible to apply. However, these applicants must have a valid study permit in order to hold the award;
- Be registered or intend to register in an eligible program on a full-time basis in 2024-2025;
- An eligible program is defined as a full-time program of study of two or three terms at the University of Toronto leading to a graduate degree. A full-time student is one who is in at least 60% of a full course load (40% for students with a permanent disability) or as defined by their institution. Program eligibility is determined individually by each graduate unit. Students should carefully review the information outlined by the graduate unit they intend to be registered in, to determine if their program is eligible for the graduate unit’s OGS competition.
- Have not exceeded the lifetime maximum of government-funded support or maximum OGS support available for their current level of study (see SGS website under maximum support); and
- Have achieved at least A- (or equivalent) in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent); or if the student has competed two years of graduate studies at the time of application, the student must only demonstrate an overall average of at least A- (or equivalent) on all graduate courses completed.
- NEW: At the graduate unit’s discretion, exceptions may be made for highly meritorious applicants who are below the required GPA minimum. Examples of cases in which a unit may consider granting an exception include (but are not limited to): applicants with documented medical issues or family care responsibilities, applicants who have pursued alternative career paths, or mature students with professional experience. Contact your proposed graduate unit(s) to confirm their use of this eligibility criterion.
Note: If marks used for calculating an applicant’s grade point average (GPA) are not available (e.g., courses were graded on a pass-fail basis), then the next most recent available undergraduate or graduate marks should be used to determine eligibility.
To be eligible to hold the OGS, recipients:
- Must register and remain enrolled as a full-time student at U of T in an eligible program at the graduate unit from which the OGS was awarded;
- Who withdraw, transfer to part-time status, complete degree requirements prior to the end of their award, or fail to complete the full term, will be required to repay any funds received for the incomplete term;
- May accept research assistantships, part-time teaching positions, or other paid employment that does not affect their status as a full-time graduate student and is commensurate with the graduate unit policies. Typically, students holding full-time paid employment are not eligible to receive an OGS from the University of Toronto; and
- Cannot hold an OGS award in the same session (overlapping) or from the same award year as an Ontario Trillium Scholarship, Vanier CGS, or another OGS.
The eligibility criteria provided above are the minimum requirements only. Graduate units may impose additional criteria to apply, receive, or hold an OGS. Please carefully review the information outlined by your graduate unit, and inquire if necessary, regarding any additional requirements or conditions to those listed here.
Application Process
Applicants must submit an OGS application to their proposed graduate unit using the U of T OGS Online Application, accessible through the SGS OGS webpage .
Each graduate unit will have their own internal submission deadline to which applicants must adhere. Applicants should verify the graduate unit application deadline and review the U of T OGS Application Instructions prior to starting an OGS application.
Once the entire application has been completed and submitted online, it will be made available to the proposed graduate unit for review and consideration.
Important note for International students : Applicants holding a valid study permit by the graduate unit’s OGS international application deadline are eligible to apply following the same application process and internal deadlines set by their current or proposed graduate unit. Graduate units will select and forward a limited number of applications to the School of Graduate Studies to compete in a centralized adjudication.
OGS applicants who wish to be considered for other awards that also use the OGS application for their selection process must select “Yes” on the OGS application form’s “Awards and Financial Aid” page to give permission to the proposed graduate unit and SGS to use your OGS application for other award competitions, if available.
Graduate units will update their internal competition results on the OGS application system, viewable by applicants in late-April 2024. Official award offers from the SGS centralized competition will be sent out by SGS in late-May 2024.

New scholarship fund empowers graduate students to build sustainable futures.
By: Chelsea Liddy Pivtorak | April 17, 2024
Just in time for Earth Day 2024, a Michigan SEAS and Ross alumnus of the Erb Institute has established a new sustainability-focused scholarship fund, hoping to help underrepresented students pursue their dream careers while meeting urgent environmental and social needs.
Miguel Andrés Sossa-Mardomingo, MS/MBA ’13, serves as Vice President and Americas Sustainability GTM Lead at global consulting firm Capgemini. Based in Seattle, much of Sossa-Mardomingo’s work is focused on navigating high-profile clients through complex sustainability and organizational challenges.
The Miguel Andrés Sossa-Mardomingo (MÁS) Scholarship Fund will provide support for admitted graduate students who are pursuing the Erb Institute’s dual MS/MBA degrees in sustainable business enterprise. “We are in the race of a lifetime to create a more sustainable world,” said Sossa-Mardomingo. “Yet, today, we lack the necessary voices and ideas of leaders from underrepresented communities who are often most overburdened by the adverse effects of climate change. Through this scholarship, I aspire to close this gap by inspiring a diverse array of leaders to join me in safeguarding our shared future.”
During his graduate career, Sossa-Mardomingo had classmates who felt they had to choose between jobs that either created positive impact or provided for the future they wanted. Through the MÁS Scholarship Fund , he hopes to send a message that recipients can choose sustainable career paths that allow them to “do good while doing well.”
Reflecting on his career motivations, Sossa-Mardomingo credited his father, who grew up on a farm in Colombia, and his mother, a Cuban refugee and librarian. They encouraged him to respect nature, conserve resources, and continuously learn, all lessons his wife (Marie-Lise Perrault, pictured above), his family, and he apply in supporting their communities today.
His U-M education has helped him to assess sustainability challenges, build authentic relationships, and lead global teams. At SEAS, Sossa-Mardomingo played a central role in establishing the school’s annual career, an event that now brings in dozens of employers to recruit students in the environmental space. He also led efforts to bring speakers to campus to provide additional opportunities for students to hear from and meet with leaders at the intersection of sustainability and business.
“I loved my time at Ross and SEAS: one of the best dual-degree sustainability programs in the world,” he said. “I am forever thankful for my lifelong friends, world-class professors, merit-based scholarships, and enriching global experiences. The Erb Institute has one of the best dual-degree programs in the world, and it is now an honor to give back.”
“Climate change and related environmental justice issues are intensifying every year,” continued Sossa-Mardomingo. “There is no time to waste! We need as many great thinkers and doers out there to join us, and I hope this scholarship can help pave the way.”
Miguel's goal is to raise $1M by Earth Day 2025 for this scholarship. While he wishes he could fund it all, Miguel and his wife are excited and honored to match the first $100,000 donated.
This scholarship will provide recipients with: • $10,000+ scholarships per year (enough to fund once-in-a-lifetime internships, climate conferences, a climate tech start-up, or tuition, for example) • Mentorships with industry leaders • Networking opportunities for sustainably focused careers
How Can you Help? 1. Make a donation at https://lnkd.in/gxfF4k3N 2. Check if you have an employer match 3. Share this with others, including alumni looking for meaningful ways to be an ally or to give back to others in a way that would have made a difference during their education.
