PhD Program Overview

Wharton’s program in Operations, Information and Decisions emphasizes research on real management problems and maintains a balance between theory and practice. The faculty trains scholars in decision making, information systems, and operations management.

Our faculty leads in the development and application of an innovative blend of analytical and empirical approaches to important problems facing the private and public sectors, including the design, development, and evaluation of:

  • behavioral approaches to individual and managerial decision making;
  • information systems as a means of commerce and of decision making; and
  • operations for the fulfillment of demand and broader economic and social needs.

Our PhD program provides a unique mix of behavioral, economic, statistical and analytical training to its students, and its strength is reflected in our students’ record of placement and achievement.

Three Areas of Specialization

Decision processes (dp).

What factors influence human judgment and decision-making? Why and when are people prone to judgement errors and biases? What kinds of interventions will help people make better decisions or improve human welfare? Our interdisciplinary Decision-Making PhD program focuses on training students to conduct and publish academic research that helps to answer these important questions. Along the way, students receive rigorous quantitative/statistical training and acquire a deep understanding of the literature on judgment and decision-making, significant exposure to the fields of psychology, economics, organizational behavior, and marketing.

Information Systems (IS)

The Information Systems PhD Program covers a broad range of research interests, from the development of detailed analytical and information-technology-based methods for managing complex organizations to the broader economic evaluation of the impact of organizational and market-based use of information systems and information-based strategies.

Operations Management (OM)

The Operations Management PhD Program focuses on the processes that define an organization’s outputs, as well as the methods commonly used to analyze these processes. Students specializing in OM are interested in a wide range of functions, including operations strategy, product and process design, technology management, capacity planning, and supply chain management.  Their work similarly covers a wide range of organizations and industries, including education, health care, hospitality, manufacturing, distribution, and retailing.

Wharton returns to No. 1 spot in 2024 U.S. News ranking of MBA programs

02-15-23-huntsman-hall-abhiram-juvvadi

The Wharton School reclaimed its top spot on the 2024-2025 U.S. News & World Report's Best Business Schools ranking, tying with Stanford University.

The list of MBA programs, which was published on April 9, returns Wharton to the No. 1 spot following its No. 3 ranking last year. The previously top-ranked University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business now shares the No. 3 position with Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, with the MIT Sloan School of Management at No. 5.

Wharton last ranked No. 1 in the 2022-2023 version of the rankings, before falling to No. 3 the next year. In the most recent list, Wharton specifically placed No. 1 in executive MBA, finance, and real estate programs and No. 2 in marketing and accounting.

U.S. News listed 124 business schools across the country. It determined the list based on survey data that schools directly reported for fall 2023 and early 2024. Unlike last year, the list did not include any MBA programs that failed to submit the most recent survey data.

Penn students left 'panicked and puzzled' by competitive Wharton club application process

'The kids really need this': Wharton student group allegedly withholds $90,000 promised to charity

The methodology evaluated factors including employment rates, post-graduate earnings, and salary by profession to determine placement success at each business school. The quality assessment score was derived from ratings provided by business school peers and recruiters as well as academic statistics for admitted students, such as median undergraduate GPA.

In February, Wharton placed No. 1 on Financial Times' list of 100 business schools globally. The ranking followed Wharton's exclusion from the FT's top business schools ranking in 2023 — its first absence in 25 years — due to the school failing to reach the alumni survey respondent threshold.

Wharton also recently ranked No. 3 by Fortune, No. 5 by Forbes, and No. 8 by Bloomberg. Last year, University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and the Perelman School of Medicine withdrew their participation in the U.S. News rankings. Both schools announced that they would no longer report data, citing concerns with the methodology of the rankings. Wharton has continued to submit data to U.S. News.

Wharton Stories

Finding lifelong community in wharton’s mba program for executives.

“As a Wharton grad, I feel prepared for any challenge because I have this community of people standing by me for life.” – Neha Rastogi, WG’24

Behind every successful Wharton MBA Program for Executives student is a supportive personal network. Partners, friends, and family become invaluable champions for students as they navigate the highs and lows of their two years with Wharton. Neha Rastogi, WG’24, knows the importance of a fully supportive community while pursuing an executive MBA. She shares her experience applying and getting accepted to the program twice, at two vastly different junctures in her life.

Balancing Personal Life and Academic Dreams

A seasoned technology product leader with 20+ years of experience, Neha initially applied to Wharton’s EMBA program in 2014. Her life may have looked perfect from the outside; as a Product and Engineering Manager at Apple, she developed iconic technologies such as Siri, FaceTime, and iMessage, and had just been accepted to one of the world’s top business schools.

“I was over the moon to be admitted,” recalls Neha. “I grew up in a small town in India and never thought I would pursue an education at a school like Wharton. But at the time I was admitted to the program, I was in a very unsupportive personal relationship. Unfortunately, that situation resulted in me declining the offer of admission which I had worked so hard for. It broke me in a way because I felt I had to give up not only that dream but also the part of me who is a dreamer.”

After a few years of self-discovery and healing, Neha was back on her feet and living a more peaceful life. Moving on both professionally and personally, she landed a new position as Mobile Tech Lead at Walmart Global Tech and decided to end her previous relationship. While grateful for her ability to get out of a difficult situation, she notes that her experience of persistence, survival, and resilience is not unique.

“This is my story, but I can appreciate that many of us in the WEMBA program have experiences of overcoming adversity t hrough resilience and determination and coming out stronger.”

The Journey to an MBA

In a surprising shift of destiny, Neha went on to meet and marry Wharton MBA Program for Executives graduate Pranav Sharma, WG’16.

“It is a wild coincidence,” admits Neha, who met Pranav through a mutual friend after her divorce. “He graduated from the same WEMBA class I would have graduated from had I accepted the admission offer back in 2014.”

Heeding encouragement from her husband and his Wharton alumni friends, Neha began looking into Wharton’s EMBA program again when she moved into a Director of Product role at Mozilla.

“Up until that point, I had developed my abilities organically on the job,” she says. “But as the scale of my position grew and the reach of my products increased, I realized I needed a formal business education to help me round out my skills.”

wharton management phd students

With the Wharton community already rallying around her, Neha applied and was accepted again for the Executive MBA class of 2024.

“I was shocked when I got the congratulations call from Director of Admissions, Barbara Craft,” recalls Neha. “It was an emotional moment for me. Part of me didn’t want to apply again because of the fear of rejection. But my husband and his WEMBA buddies reassured me, championed me, and convinced me that I could do it. There were voices in my head telling me I couldn’t do it, but more voices told me I could.”

Finding a Supportive Community at Wharton

Once at Wharton, Neha found strong support in a community of her own. In her first year of the program, she enrolled in the McNulty Leadership Program’s Women’s Leadership Roundtables. In this six-week program, small groups of full-time and Executive Wharton MBA students participate in conversations around bias, gender equity, and frameworks for self-reflection.

“The Women’s Leadership Roundtable was my very first close-knit, safe network experience in the program,” recalls Neha. “This was a group of six women, three in the first year and three in the second year of the MBA program. We shared our most hidden vulnerabilities, fears, and passions and celebrated them. The support we got from each other and the commonalities in our experiences were eye-opening.”

Neha also sought out mentorship opportunities throughout the program to ensure she made the most of her experience.

“In one of P rofessor Michael Useem’s courses, we were introduced to Maggie Wilderotter, former CEO of Frontier Communications. She gave a talk about her experience on the Board of Directors at DocuSign, and I connected with her after the session to learn more about her role. She’s become a mentor to me, and recently hosted a Boot Camp for Wharton women and allies which coached us on board service. I would never have gotten connected with Maggie on my own. Wharton opens those doors and connects students to incredible people.”

In addition, Neha embarked on a Global Modular Course (GMC) this spring, studying emerging economies in Bogota, Medellin, and Barranquilla, Colombia. These international study opportunities provide students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in another culture while networking with students from other cohorts and the full-time MBA program. Neha looks forward to traveling to Rwanda for another GMC later this term, focused on conflict, leadership, and change.

NIRBY Wins $50,000 Perlman Grand Prize in Startup Challenge presented by Venture Lab at the University of Pennsylvania

Printer Friendly Version

PHILADELPHIA, APRIL 18, 2024 – The University of Pennsylvania’s Venture Lab is pleased to announce the winner of its annual Startup Challenge: Nirby , founded by Piotr Lazarek SEAS’25 W’25. Nirby is a real-time soil analytics and farmland management tool for large agricultural enterprises, leveraging satellite data and proprietary drone systems to deliver actionable insights within minutes. The tool enables up to 40% savings on fertilizer expenses and up to 15% increase in crop yields.

Lazarek created Nirby after realizing he could adjust a Mars rover he was building to another frontier: farming.

“Sixty five percent of all fertilizers are never used by crops but instead wash away into our ecosystems, contributing to over 2 billion tons of CO2 emissions. From another perspective, this is 75 billion dollars essentially disappearing into thin air every single year,” says Lazarek. “Our system reduces unnecessary fertilizer use, cuts down on CO2 emissions, and improves crop yields.”

For the third year in a row, the Startup Challenge was held in Tangen Hall, the University’s hub for student entrepreneurship and innovation on April 12, 2024. Nirby was selected from a field of eight finalist teams—including LilyLoop and Probook—who advanced from nearly 30 semifinalists . For the finals, teams pitched a panel of alumni judges and a live audience of nearly 150 attendees as they competed for over $250,000 in cash prizes, in-kind support, and other invaluable resources to launch their startups.

“This year’s Venture Lab Startup Challenge was the most competitive and the most inspiring ever!” says Lori Rosenkopf, Simon and Midge Palley Professor of Management and Vice Dean of Entrepreneurship at the Wharton School. “It is so impressive to see our student ventures making such strong progress across a range of industries, and we are so grateful for the efforts of our judges and our team in support of them.”

The Startup Challenge marks the end of another exciting year of entrepreneurship across the Penn community. Students engaged in entrepreneurial programming are founding, developing, and scaling companies utilizing the multitude of resources available within the Penn and Philadelphia ecosystems. Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.

Wharton Management

wharton management phd students

To be successful in a changing global economy, managers must view the total enterprise and understand the forces shaping the firm’s direction, policies, and goals and at the same time exercise personal leadership in managing employees.

Wharton’s Management Department applies basic social science disciplines and research methods to these management and leadership problems in the public and private sectors.

The Management Department encompasses five major areas of expertise:

  • Strategic Management emphasizes forecasting, planning and control, allocating resources, the appraisal of competition, and implementation strategies.
  • Multinational Management focuses on operating in worldwide and heterogeneous national environments under conditions of economic and political risk.
  • Human Social Capital focuses on work and employment, the policies and practices associated with the management of employees, why and how they evolve over time, and what they mean for organizational performance, individual outcomes, and social impact.
  • Organizational Behavior examines employees’ individual and group behavior and how these dynamics influence their attitudes and performance, as well organizational performance and structure.
  • Entrepreneurial Management provides individuals with skills, analytical tools, and concepts to prepare them for a career as an autonomous entrepreneur, a family-business owner, or an innovator in new corporate ventures.
