What’s it about?

Subramanyam (Rao Ramesh), who has always yearned to be a government officer, is still unemployed because of his inability to secure a government job. His son Arjun (Ankith Koyya), who recently finished studies, has not yet found employment, while his wife Kala Rani (Indraja) manages the household through her job. Subramanyam relies on his wife’s income.

Following her mother’s passing, Kala Rani makes a month-long pilgrimage to immerse the ashes. Subramanyam unexpectedly receives a message indicating a deposit of Rs. 10 lakh into his account.

At first, both Subramanyam and his son Arjun anticipate a call from the bank or someone requesting them to return the money they accidentally deposited. However, they do not receive any such call or request. Consequently, Subramanyam and his son spend half of the money on various items.

Then, his spouse calls to inform him that his account will receive the insurance payout for her mother’s death. She tells him that he should hold onto the money so they can use it for their upcoming house construction. Before his wife comes back, how will Subramanyam be able to recover the money he has spent? Who deposited Rs. 10 lakh into his account?

The Telugu film industry rarely produces films with a character actor as the main protagonist. “Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam” is one such example. Rao Ramesh is the main protagonist of this story, which is based on a relatable and intriguing concept. What happens when you see your bank account grow in size after receiving a deposit from an unexpected source? This is the film’s fundamental premise.

We have observed numerous instances of people transferring money to the wrong individual. The protagonist of “Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam” faces the same predicament. Director Lakshman Karya has expanded on this one-line story, transforming it into a full-fledged feature film with twists and fun moments. Lakshman Karya has skillfully narrated it, with many hilarious moments.

The film not only revolves around Rao Ramesh, but it also devotes equal time to Ankith Koyya, who plays Rao Ramesh’s son, and combines the young man’s love story with Rao Ramesh’s main problem.

The scenes in which Rao Ramesh and Ankith Koyya attempt to identify the sender of the money, only to lavishly spend it after realizing no one has come forward to claim it, have elicited a good deal of laughter. The first half of the film contains considerable fun sequences.

Naturally, the second half must focus on resolving the issue, but this is where the screenplay and narrative stumble. Many sequences in the second half go overboard for the sake of comedy while also defying logic entirely. Comedian Praveen’s thread, in particular, not only dragged out the story but also diminished its overall impact. The climax is fun, but much of the second half is less effective.

In terms of performances, Rao Ramesh steals the show. His dialogue delivery and antics entice the viewer to follow along. As the protagonist, he carries the film on his shoulders. His comedy primarily works. Ankith Koyya as Ramesh’s son is fine. Indraja performs the role of Rao Ramesh’s wife quite well. Ramya Pasupuleti’s character is a complete misfit for this story.

The film’s production and technical values are acceptable. The music should have been better. Lakshman Karya, as a writer and director, shows promise in the first half. 

Bottom line: “Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam” is a simple film with a humorous concept. Rao Ramesh’s performance is highly entertaining, and numerous episodes provide a good dose of laughs. But it also becomes repetitive after a certain point. Despite a few minor issues, it makes for a decent and fun watch.

Ammu movie review: Aishwarya Lekshmi-starrer is a chilling thriller about a woman's fight against domestic violence

Ammu movie review: aishwarya lekshmi shines as a domestic abuse survivor in this refreshing take on the poignant and relevant issue from debutant director charukesh sekar..

Aishwarya Lekshmi, unlike many of her contemporaries, has a constant urge to pick scripts that matter. Courtesy that, she is truly becoming a force to reckon with. After bankrolling Sai Pallavi-starrer Gargi, unarguably one of the best films of the year, she chose to headline debutant Charukesh Sekar’s Ammu – a chilling thriller about a domestic abuse survivor standing up for herself. Cut from the same cloth as films such Thappad and 47 Naatkal, Aishwarya’s Ammu is a very familiar tale of domestic abuse of a helpless wife but thankfully it takes a very interesting detour to present a refreshing end. Aishwarya Lekshmi plays Ammu. The film opens with a conversation between a young girl and Ammu, who is about to marry her neighbor Ravi (Naveen Chandra), who works as a police inspector. The little girl asks Ammu if she really likes Ravi, and if she’s ready for marriage. Ammu says she thinks she knows him and goes on to ask the girl why she would ask such a question.

In what’s one of the best scenes of the movie, Ravi’s character is beautifully introduced and it doesn't take much time for the viewers to learn about his true colors. Ammu’s world starts to crumble when she learns about Ravi’s abusive and authoritative behavior. The rest of the story is about how Ammu deals with domestic violence and whether she succeeds in teaching her husband a lesson.

Ammu will definitely be one of the most important films of this year. It takes a very relevant issue that has been a topic of discussion for a long time and gives it a very interesting spin with the way it chooses to end the film. One could think of such a story and list down all the possible outcomes but this film’s ending would still leave you surprised. Instead of playing out like an awareness film on domestic abuse, Ammu touches upon crucial aspects that need to be taken into consideration when it comes to a woman’s involvement in a marriage. In one of the film’s most crucial scenes, Ammu cries her heart out to her mother and argues about being married so early. The mother jokingly replies, ‘you’re already 25’. In the subsequent scene, when Ammu opens up to her mother about Ravi turning abusive, she quotes the examples of her father and defends it by saying men have no other means to take out their anger and stress.

The film beautifully talks about how women are conditioned to domestic abuse across generations and most have even accepted it as a way of life. There’s also a beautiful scene about a woman’s right to abortion, and it couldn’t have come at a more fitting time than now when the Supreme Court affirmed women's right to abortion in India.

It is quite brave of Aishwarya to headline such a project at a time when she can easily get away by playing the quintessential heroine. It’s as though she wants to make a statement with her films. Therefore, Aishwarya is carefully picking projects that rise above the usual definition of entertainment. As the helpless wife trying to muster courage to find a way out of her abusive marriage, Aishwarya plays her part so well. This is one of her best performances. It is equally gutsy of Naveen Chandra to take up this character and he plays the menacing husband so convincingly. Bobby Simhaa shines in a crucial cameo. Ammu began streaming on Prime Video from October 19.

Some stories urge us to suspend our disbelief and give in to their charm. Destiny and the power of love drive debut writer-director Shouryuv’s Telugu film Hi Nanna . This tale that introduces us to beautiful people in picture- perfect settings has a few nostalgic tropes such as a pet dog being a catalyst at crucial times. It is cinematic but comfortingly familiar. The leading man, actor Nani, portrays a single father, wearing his heart on his sleeve and making us well up in tears, and Mrunal Thakur revels in the portrayal of her layered characterisation. Hesham Abdul Wahab’s background score is a foil to this tale that sometimes sounds improbable and demands that we set our cynicism aside. Does it work? How much one enjoys this film depends on whether we accept some of the reveals as the narrative progresses and embrace it with its rough edges.

Viraj (Nani) is a celebrity photographer in Mumbai, living with his six-year-old daughter Mahi (child actor Kiara Khanna) in a house that belongs to architecture magazines (production designer Avinash Kolla and cinematographer Sanu John Varghese whip up an aesthetic visual palette). Viraj’s calendar is choc-a-bloc but he tailors it around his daughter’s requirements. The first few minutes give us an idea of him being a hands-on father. Mahi’s small world with her father, grandfather (Jayaram), pet dog Pluto and Viraj’s friend and colleague Justin (Priyadarshi) looks nearly perfect. However, she is curious about her mother.

Hi Nanna (Telugu)

Shouryuv begins unpacking Viraj’s past in a fairytale manner, in a format that the father uses to tell his daughter bedtime stories, and slowly broaches the bittersweet portions. The writer-director hopes that his audience, too, will patiently listen in and not let the social media-driven short-term attention span get the better of them. He puts Viraj in a spot by making him narrate his past in the presence of Yashna (Mrunal Thakur, voice by Chinmayi), who has befriended Mahi minutes earlier. Slowly, the writer pulls a few tricks from his hat. Events leading up to intermission warrant us to embrace a few old world tropes, particularly about medical conditions and the play of fate.

One can either be dismissive about these trajectories or appreciate how the writer-director uses them to show the contrasting personalities in a relationship. If Viraj is all about hope, his wife has anxiety issues that stem from growing up in a broken home. There are promises made, only to be mocked by destiny. The woman wallows in grief and guilt while the man, also in grief, desperately holds on to a silver lining. 

A sizable portion of the narrative rests on the single father’s resilience. There’s a lovely scene early on between Viraj and his prospective mother-in-law playing out like a been-there-seen-that situation of highlighting economic differences. Viraj counters her in the most emphatic way possible, making us root for him. Nani makes the writing seem even better in the manner in which he portrays the determination and innocence of Viraj who believes in love at first sight and later as the father who will move heaven and earth for his daughter. This is easily Nani’s best in the emotional space since Jersey and he can make you well up long after leaving the hall.

Music composer Hesham Abdul Wahab is a big asset to the film. The songs are hummable and pleasant, but the background score takes the cake. When the strains of ‘Idhe idhe tholisaarila…’ play at different points, it is impossible not to be moved. He also uses the calming notes of the waves and silences where essential.

Mahi’s mother’s story unravels by and by. There’s predictability in these portions that show how a strong romance, despite the chinks in its armour, can overshadow everything else. The banter on the beach and the party song (featuring Shruti Haasan) feel overdrawn. More characters are brought into the fray, like the ones played by Angad Bedi and Viraj Ashwin. A cheeky Kuch Kuch Hota Hai reference is thrown in through a line uttered at the mandap.

We know how the tale will end. But in the process, it’s not just Viraj and his wife who get to introspect on their relationship, parenting and destiny. Jayaram’s understated character gently reinforces the beauty of love and responsible parenting for the older generation as well. 

Mrunal, who is gorgeously turned out by design, comes into her own in the final act. After Sita Ramam , this film gives her a more complex character and she steps up, giving it her best shot. For Priyadarshi , the friend-colleague part is like a walk in the park. He blends in with ease and in many places, where he rolls his eyes at the turn of events or nudges things in a certain direction, he is us, the rational audience wondering where all of this is headed. Child actor Kiara Khanna holds the drama together with her innocence and vulnerability. 

A few minor details make the narrative more authentic. The story that begins in Mumbai, travels back in time to Coonoor and then to Goa, reflects the multilingual, multicultural people of these regions with a smattering of English, Hindi and Tamil.

I wish an episode in the final stretch didn’t rely on convenient coincidences. One can argue that elite Mumbaikars keep jetsetting to Goa and it isn’t a surprise to find well-qualified professionals among them. Shouryuv drops hints when he introduces certain supporting characters and their profession. Yet, it came across as filmi. Nevertheless, the narrative has its heart in the right place and hopes that we embrace it despite its leaps of faith.

Hi Nanna is a heartwarming story of a father, daughter and the mother fighting her demons and believing in love. Such stories don’t go out of fashion, and Shouryuv’s drama is a breather amid larger-than-life action entertainers.

Lakshmi devi, lakshmi manchu, priyadarshi, ram pothineni, uttar pradesh.

Lakshmi Manchu, as the lady in distress losing her family and singly fighting to find the criminals have excelled, and her other shade revealed toward the end with a twist, makes the character even more appealing with the interesting dimension. Priyadarshi makes a good presence as the second fiddle, as a good cop. Adarsh Balakrishna and Samrat are adequate, while the rest of the cast has nothing much to do.

Raghu Dixit's background score is impressive and haunting, while the cinematography by Samala Baskar is top notch, capturing the interesting visuals in a splendid manner, engaging the audience. Bikkina Thammiraju's editing is taut and makes the movie gripping with sharp cuts.

Director Vijay Yelakanti has come up with an engaging tale of a wife on a mission to unravel the murder mystery of her husband, and though the plot and the concept of constable helping her out remind heavily of Kahaani, the pacy first half, the visuals by Samala baskar, and the twists in the second half make Wife of Ram an engaging flick.

Besides, the subtle performance of Lakshmi Manchu and the crisp run time of 118 minutes also help the cause. However, the director fails at establishing several characters well, and ultimately, Wife of Ram ends as a decent thriller that is a can watch.

Satyam Rajesh, who scored a hit with his last flick, Polimera 2, has now come up with an emotional thriller titled Tenant. Y Yungandhar is its director, and the film has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Goutham (Satyam Rajesh) and Sandhya (Megha Chowdhury) are a happy couple, but things change drastically. All is not well between the couple and one day, Sandhya dies in a mysterious manner. Goutham becomes the prime suspect in his wife’s death case. At the same time, Goutham’s neighbor Rishi (Bharath Kanth) also attempts suicide. Why is the couple not happy? Is there any connection between Sandhya’s death and Rishi’s suicide attempt? Is it Goutham who killed Sandhya? This is what Tenant is about.

Plus Points:

Keeping aside the good intent of the film, the makers tried to tell the story in 1:30 hours, which is a welcome move. Instead of making it a two-hour movie, the team kept the runtime in check. This particular story doesn’t require a lengthy duration and the makers understood the assignment well. This is something that filmmakers should take note of. The last 20 minutes offer a shock value, and the twists that come here are very disturbing.

The director has delivered a good social message, and the penultimate portions will move us to tears. Lately, Satyam Rajesh is playing different roles, and he did a pretty good job in Tenant. His role required him to remain subtle, and the actor delivers that exactly. Megha Chowdhury’s portrayal of an innocent housewife is satisfactory.

Bharath Kanth and Chandana Payavvula shine in their respective roles. They get significant screen time in the film and make the most out of it. Esther is decent as an investigative officer. Among others, anchor Chandu does an impressive job.

Minus Points:

The major issue with Tenant is that it fails to create the much-required tension in the proceedings. The treatment is a bit different from the regular films, but the impact is clearly missing. Touted to be an emotional thriller, Tenant lacks the basic thrills. The narrative isn’t completely gripping, and the movie only catches our attention during a few moments.

The film is slow-paced for the most part, and it is clearly a deliberate decision. The slow narration isn’t something that will sit well with everyone. We understand that something is bothering Satyam Rajesh and Megha Chowdhury. The director tried to showcase the tension between these characters only through visuals without the usage of dialogues. This is unique but could have worked well with a better background score. As that didn’t happen, boredom creeps in.

Even the second half begins on an ordinary note, and the movie becomes engaging as it reaches the climax. Hence, the overall experience is underwhelming despite the socially relevant subject.

Technical Aspects:

Sahitya Sagar’s work is good in parts. The songs are neat, but the same cannot be said about the background score. Jemin Jom Ayyaneth’s cinematography perfectly suits the film’s tone. The editing could have been better, while the production values are good.

Director Yungandhar also penned the screenplay for Tenant. Though the narration is unusual, it doesn’t pack a punch. The whole first half is devoted to showcasing the mental trauma of the lead pair, but these portions are boring.

On the whole, Tenant deals with a relevant social issue but the presentation doesn’t do complete justice to the chosen point. The performances of Satyam Rajesh, Megha Chowdhury, Chandana, and others are good, and the last few minutes are engaging. The movie’s treatment is different, but there isn’t enough tension in the proceedings to provide a satisfactory experience. Had more care been taken in the screenplay, the impact would have been much better.
