Feature image of Short Essay on Importance of Library

Short Essay on Importance of Library in 100 Words

A collection of books is called a library. It is a place that plays many primary and functional roles in the lives of both readers and learners. Many people like to visit libraries weekly, and book aficionados pay their visit religiously every day. A bookworm’s favourite location is the library.

Extroverts explore the unexplored territory in the numerous novels the library offers, while introverts take sanctuary in its quiet nooks. A person with resources goes to the library to improve their talents, while a person with limited resources goes to the library because books are the most cost-effective way to learn new skills. It is the only place that provides something to all who seek comfort under its roof.

Short Essay on Importance of Library in 200 Words

A library is a place that maintains a collection of all forms of literature and important journals. The importance of a library in the lives of both readers and learners cannot be overstated. Many people go there once a week, while book enthusiasts go there every day. For a bookworm, the library is the best place to be.

Extroverts explore the unexplored territory in the numerous novels it has to offer, while introverts take solace in its snug corners. A person of means goes to the library to improve their talents, but a person of limited means goes to the library because books are the most cost-effective way to learn new skills. A student visits the library searching for reference books to boost his confidence for impending tests. A teacher, on the other hand, goes to the library to find latent information that isn’t readily apparent in the set curriculum.

Libraries are gaining more importance in the lives of one and all with digitalisation. As more and more things become digitised, several libraries have created their digital versions. It is user-friendly and simply accessible. It is even less expensive than a traditional library’s annual subscription. The value of libraries cannot be adequately expressed in words. It also has something to do with aesthetic enjoyment. Readers enjoy reading, learners enjoy learning, and educators enjoy exploring, yet neither can get enough of the library as a whole.

Short Essay on Importance of Library in 400 Words

A library is a place that maintains a collection of all forms of literature, reference books, periodicals and important journals. It plays a vital role in the lives of readers and learners alike. It is the most favourite place for a bookworm. While introverts seek refuge in its cosy corners, extroverts explore the uncharted territories in the many books it has to offer.

A student looks for reference books in the library to earn more confidence for the upcoming exams. In contrast, a teacher picks up reference books from the library to discover the latent knowledge that is not easily found in the prescribed curriculum. A keen learner wants to leave no book untouched, whereas a writer wants to read and write all the books at once. A person with obsessive-compulsive disorder visits the library to adore its different sections and, in the process, picks up new ways to or organised reorganise their bookshelves

Library memberships make reading economical and help one in taking up reading as a hobby. It makes one more informative, wise and knowledgeable. It also makes us more disciplined and gives our minds a place to think. The silence maintained in the library helps one focus and concentrate on the right things.

It channelises and re-channelises our thoughts by bringing us new ideas. It is an escape from reality. Under its roof, the old and the young come together to read the celebrated classics. It maintains a record and helps us understand the importance of keeping a journal. A library, most importantly, makes one fall in love with the pages of books time and again.

Libraries charge membership fees and take late charges if the book is not returned on time. This makes the borrower time-bound, and they try to complete the entire book within the given time interval. It makes one time-efficient and improves time management skills. It also nurtures self-discipline and teaches us to value all the resources such as time, money and knowledge alike.

Many libraries, such as the British Council, conduct important seminars and sessions that expose keen academicians. It acts as a venue for exchanging creative ideas and helps one with their respective career goals. Some libraries also conduct English speaking sessions to improve speaking skills and vocabulary. These days, as everything is getting digital, many libraries have come up with their digital version too.

It is user friendly and accessible easily. It is even cheaper than the annual membership of the physical library. One cannot estimate all the importance of libraries in words. It has got to do with aesthetic pleasure as well. Readers like to read, learners like to learn, educationists like to explore, and neither can have enough of the library as a whole.

Hopefully, after going through this lesson, you have a holistic idea about the importance of libraries in our lives. I have tried to cover every aspect of a library’s need and significance within and outside the lives of learners within limited words. Essay on My School Library

Where can a student find a dimension of knowledge to scout apart from the classrooms? It is the school library that offers so many universes of books that a student can traverse and find enlightenment along with the ultimate reward of knowledge. Libraries are the prime element of a school’s infrastructure. It contains the respective books that students might need to enhance their knowledge in a particular subject.

They also find entertainment and an unfound treasure of emotions from different types of books. This is what a school library means to us. We have discovered so many types of emotions when a school library introduced us to the world of unlimited knowledge trapped in white pages.

It is not an easy task to manage a library. It is fascinating that there are certain bachelor’s courses that aspirants have to study to understand how a library works and how it is managed. Library sciences are one of the most popular subjects taught by the leading universities in the world. It is an important aspect of learning that we have in our schools. An educational institution without a library is thus incomplete.

In a library, we find a plethora of books from different genres.  We find nonfiction and fiction books. We find biographies and autobiographies. We discover books related to literature and poetry. There are reference books that link the literature of one book to the others. Books related to all kinds of subjects are available in a school. The more advanced an institution is, the more advanced its library becomes. A full-fledged library contains books for all genres that school students generally like to read. From literature to art, subject-based books to entertainment, you will find different choices.

Why is a library important? A school is a place where knowledge is delivered. There is no limit in gathering knowledge. The classroom sessions are there to encourage us to learn something new about a particular concept. The enthusiastic students then find their way out to the library to gather more knowledge regarding the same concept and enhance their understanding. This is considered to be the first step in professional development via effective learning. Hence, apart from classrooms, a library is another platform for knowledge delivery and skill development.

Libraries are generally invaded by enthusiastic scholars to find more knowledge regarding a new concept. Their enthusiasm to seek knowledge and learn new concepts via scouting new books is the first step to professional development via effective learning. This is what a school also promotes among the students. The authority keeps special periods for the library where the students will find books of their choices and read them. These young minds are also allowed to take the books home and read them with the utmost enthusiasm.

In our school, we have a huge library. It is probably the most peaceful place in our entire school. We find so many students reading new books of their choices with an undiluted concentration. It has a very encouraging environment for those who love to read new books and gather information. Our school has an excellent collection of different genres of books apart from the subjects taught.

We like to borrow the books from the authorities and take them home to enjoy the genres we admire. It helps us to develop personally and mentally. We get a beautiful way to scout different thoughts and concepts of many authors and poets. We also learn about the fascinating facts of our planet and the universe. It is the library that provides us with the best books related to our level to make our knowledge grow and help us understand different concepts accordingly.

A library is a shed of knowledge. It is the proper place where everyone can find some books that are full of knowledge. This is an age of progress in education. Great importance is attached to the libraries as they play a vital role in promoting literacy and education.

“The true university these days is a collection of books” (Thomas Carlyle)

Books are said to be man’s best companion. Books are the core of knowledge. They are the torches that lead us to the path of knowledge. Books are the medicine for the soul. A truly alive mind seeks books because books are key for confronting our problems, searching for solutions and making pathways to the future.

“A good book is the best of friends” “Books are the lighthouses created in the great sea of time” (Edwin P. Whipple)

A library has a large collection of books and is a place where any individual can walk in and make us of those books. Libraries are the places where one learns manners, discipline, methods of working and concentration. Since all types of people flock to libraries one gets to indulge and communicate with different people. One learns culture, etiquette and ways of dignified and elegant behaviour from other people. People learn remarkable habits and marvellous qualities in such a civilized environment.

“A library is thought in Cold Storage” (Herbert Samuel)

Libraries provide an atmosphere of deep concentration and study in perfect calm. They help us in building up concentration. They give us glorious flashes of knowledge. A reader feels indulged in the books. For students, libraries provide a suitable environment in which they can study properly without any kind of disturbance and interference. Libraries are stocked with academic books and textbooks for students. LIbraries also assist the needy scholars and students who cannot afford to buy expensive books. Libraries become a tremendous advantage for these students who can easily borrow books from here and study them at home.

“Books are the over burning lamps of accumulated wisdom” “books are the window through which the soul looks out”

Reading is regarded as one of the most enriching habits. It’s not just a hobby or a pass time that entertains us but it’s also an educational activity. Reading brings us a vast reservoir of knowledge. Reading inspires people to gain more information. Thus, a library is a treasure of valuable books for people who want to use and gain from it.

“The reading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest man of past centuries” (Descartes)

Staff Pick: Information Desk: An Epic

After graduating college, poet Robyn Schiff took a job at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where she worked at the famous octagonal information desk in the entrance hall. This dazzling, book-length poem takes us through the galleries and back offices of the Met and gives a new perspective on the museum’s inhabitants—both the art and the people who work there.

Information Desk: An Epic

As a graduate student, I spent a lot of time at the Watson Library, the Met’s main research library, and Information Desk does a brilliant job of recreating the sensation of winding one’s way through the museum and the crowds. As someone who now spends a lot of time working a reference desk, I appreciated Schiff’s evocation of the humor as well as the frustration that can sometimes come with the job. For visitors, it is often too easy to overlook the staff who keep these huge institutions running smoothly; here, Schiff shines a light on the assistants, guards, couriers, and art handlers who can so often be invisible to outsiders.

The parts of the book that I found most powerful may be the close connections Schiff makes between art and nature. The poem is divided into three main sections, each preceded by an “invocation” to a different species of parasitic wasp. The same beauty, brutality, and creativity in the description of the insects are also present in humanity and our creation and consumption of art. There is also a meditation on the sources of various pigments used in paints and dyes that is stunning in its detail and language.

Finally, I must note that I was positively delighted that Schiff included a works cited list at the end of the poem, noting all the art that she references!

What I’ve Learned From My Students’ College Essays

The genre is often maligned for being formulaic and melodramatic, but it’s more important than you think.

An illustration of a high school student with blue hair, dreaming of what to write in their college essay.

By Nell Freudenberger

Most high school seniors approach the college essay with dread. Either their upbringing hasn’t supplied them with several hundred words of adversity, or worse, they’re afraid that packaging the genuine trauma they’ve experienced is the only way to secure their future. The college counselor at the Brooklyn high school where I’m a writing tutor advises against trauma porn. “Keep it brief , ” she says, “and show how you rose above it.”

I started volunteering in New York City schools in my 20s, before I had kids of my own. At the time, I liked hanging out with teenagers, whom I sometimes had more interesting conversations with than I did my peers. Often I worked with students who spoke English as a second language or who used slang in their writing, and at first I was hung up on grammar. Should I correct any deviation from “standard English” to appeal to some Wizard of Oz behind the curtains of a college admissions office? Or should I encourage students to write the way they speak, in pursuit of an authentic voice, that most elusive of literary qualities?

In fact, I was missing the point. One of many lessons the students have taught me is to let the story dictate the voice of the essay. A few years ago, I worked with a boy who claimed to have nothing to write about. His life had been ordinary, he said; nothing had happened to him. I asked if he wanted to try writing about a family member, his favorite school subject, a summer job? He glanced at his phone, his posture and expression suggesting that he’d rather be anywhere but in front of a computer with me. “Hobbies?” I suggested, without much hope. He gave me a shy glance. “I like to box,” he said.

I’ve had this experience with reluctant writers again and again — when a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously. Of course the primary goal of a college essay is to help its author get an education that leads to a career. Changes in testing policies and financial aid have made applying to college more confusing than ever, but essays have remained basically the same. I would argue that they’re much more than an onerous task or rote exercise, and that unlike standardized tests they are infinitely variable and sometimes beautiful. College essays also provide an opportunity to learn precision, clarity and the process of working toward the truth through multiple revisions.

When a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously.

Even if writing doesn’t end up being fundamental to their future professions, students learn to choose language carefully and to be suspicious of the first words that come to mind. Especially now, as college students shoulder so much of the country’s ethical responsibility for war with their protest movement, essay writing teaches prospective students an increasingly urgent lesson: that choosing their own words over ready-made phrases is the only reliable way to ensure they’re thinking for themselves.

Teenagers are ideal writers for several reasons. They’re usually free of preconceptions about writing, and they tend not to use self-consciously ‘‘literary’’ language. They’re allergic to hypocrisy and are generally unfiltered: They overshare, ask personal questions and call you out for microaggressions as well as less egregious (but still mortifying) verbal errors, such as referring to weed as ‘‘pot.’’ Most important, they have yet to put down their best stories in a finished form.

I can imagine an essay taking a risk and distinguishing itself formally — a poem or a one-act play — but most kids use a more straightforward model: a hook followed by a narrative built around “small moments” that lead to a concluding lesson or aspiration for the future. I never get tired of working with students on these essays because each one is different, and the short, rigid form sometimes makes an emotional story even more powerful. Before I read Javier Zamora’s wrenching “Solito,” I worked with a student who had been transported by a coyote into the U.S. and was reunited with his mother in the parking lot of a big-box store. I don’t remember whether this essay focused on specific skills or coping mechanisms that he gained from his ordeal. I remember only the bliss of the parent-and-child reunion in that uninspiring setting. If I were making a case to an admissions officer, I would suggest that simply being able to convey that experience demonstrates the kind of resilience that any college should admire.

The essays that have stayed with me over the years don’t follow a pattern. There are some narratives on very predictable topics — living up to the expectations of immigrant parents, or suffering from depression in 2020 — that are moving because of the attention with which the student describes the experience. One girl determined to become an engineer while watching her father build furniture from scraps after work; a boy, grieving for his mother during lockdown, began taking pictures of the sky.

If, as Lorrie Moore said, “a short story is a love affair; a novel is a marriage,” what is a college essay? Every once in a while I sit down next to a student and start reading, and I have to suppress my excitement, because there on the Google Doc in front of me is a real writer’s voice. One of the first students I ever worked with wrote about falling in love with another girl in dance class, the absolute magic of watching her move and the terror in the conflict between her feelings and the instruction of her religious middle school. She made me think that college essays are less like love than limerence: one-sided, obsessive, idiosyncratic but profound, the first draft of the most personal story their writers will ever tell.

Nell Freudenberger’s novel “The Limits” was published by Knopf last month. She volunteers through the PEN America Writers in the Schools program.

ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom to benefit from new book of essays

Book cover: Why Books Matter: Honoring Joyce Meskis: Essays on the Past, Present, and Future of Books, Bookselling, and Publishing

CHICAGO — A new book of essays, “Why Books Still Matter,” inspired by the late First Amendment champion Joyce Meskis, has been released this month, with proceeds going to the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF).

Meskis, who owned the celebrated independent bookstore Tattered Cover in Denver, was a fierce opponent of book banning, and 16 luminaries in book-related fields and the U.S. Senate have contributed to the book, which is edited by Karl Weber and published by Rivertowns Books .

“The topics of the essays in ‘Why Books Still Matter’ are some of the most important in our country right now, from freedom of speech and censorship to representation so people can see themselves reflected in books and to build empathy,” said ALA President Emily Drabinski. “We are deeply thankful that the proceeds of the book will be donated to ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom to champion libraries in this current landscape of increasing book challenges throughout the country.”

The ALA saw a record 4,240 unique book titles targeted for censorship in 2023, a 65 percent increase from 2022, when 2,571 titles were challenged. OIF tracked 1,247 demands to censor library books, materials and resources in 2023. For additional information about book challenges and how to fight them, visit the Unite Against Book Bans website.

Here are a few of the contributing essayists to the book:

  • U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper of Colorado lauds the mission that Meskis embraced: “The more books we can put in people’s hands, the better the world will be.”
  • Nick Higgins and Amy Mikel of the Brooklyn Public Library discuss an award-winning program to make banned books available to young people in communities across the country.
  • Civil liberties attorney Steve Zansberg describes a new way to think about the right to free expression and its role in a democratic society.
