Automation brings plagiarism risks, and software still needs human input for analysis and narrative.

Writing tools powered by artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to reduce manuscript preparation time to a few days, or hours. Deep-learning technologies that run chatbots, spellchecks and auto-generated tweets are being used in a growing number of products pitched at students and academics.

Grammarly, for example, claims to “inspect your writing carefully to improve clarity, word choice and more”, offering free and fee-based services.

But are these tools up to the task? In an experiment through education information site EduRef, a group of recent graduates, undergraduates and self-described undergraduate-level writers were given the same assignments as GPT-3, an AI language program developed by OpenAI, a research company co-founded by Elon Musk.

The assignments were evaluated by instructors who did not know who (or what) had written them. GPT-3 performed in line with the humans, according to EduRef, and received “more or less the same feedback”.

The program was praised for writing excellent openings and transitions, but was criticised for using vague, blunt and awkward language, and for failing to craft a strong narrative. It wrote shallow, less descriptive papers than the students, according to EduRef’s write-up on its website, but it took between three and 20 minutes to write a paper, compared to three days for the students.

Hilde van Zeeland is chief applied linguist at start-up company Writefull, which offers AI-based language editing, and is part of London-based Digital Science (see disclosure, below). She says AI tools are already powerful enough to improve a writer’s sentence flow and structure, and will continue to improve.

The company recently analysed more than 250,000 abstracts to identify the most commonly used phrases in each of four different parts of the abstract.

They found, for example, that the words ‘aim of this study’ occurred most frequently in part 1 of the abstract (where study aim and background are described) and the phrase ‘95% confidence interval’ occurred most often in part 4 (which deals with meaning of results, contribution, future research). Users can choose phrases and connecting sentences to use in their own papers.

“With this database of phrases, when a user struggles with the right word to use for each section, our software will be able to provide good alternatives,” says van Zeeland.

The website tells users not to worry about plagiarism, reassuring them that certain phrases won’t be flagged by a plagiarism checker because they are short and commonly used.

Writefull is running a separate experiment that involves feeding an abstract into an AI tool, which generates a paper title based on the input. This function can enhance title readability, draw readership to the abstract and make the article more visible to search engines, according to van Zeeland.

AI tools can do more than check a writer’s grammar and spelling and suggest frequently used phrases, says computer scientist, Guillaume Cabanac, from the University of Toulouse in France.

An analysis of journal-published computer-science papers by Cabanac and his colleagues, posted as a preprint on arXiv in July and yet to be peer-reviewed, found swathes of articles containing tortured phrases and nonsensical text. For example, the phrase ‘colossal information’ was used instead of ‘big data’.

The authors suspect that these papers were the result of using automated translations or software that rewrites existing text to disguise plagiarism, according to a report in Nature .

Their study prompted warnings from research integrity experts that a new type of fabricated paper was entering the scientific literature, which will be hard to spot as AI tools learn to use more sophisticated language.

Considerations for using AI writing tools in academic work

Shu Chian Tay, a science communicator at the National University of Singapore , fears that AI writing tools could exacerbate inequality between labs with different access to resources or openness to trying new technologies.

“Consider a hypothetical situation where AI science-writing is possible and two labs have made the same research breakthrough at the same time,” says Tay.

“One lab stuck to human writing, which took weeks, while the other made use of AI writing tools. The latter, who is likely to publish earlier would get most, if not all, of the scientific recognition and lucrative intellectual property rights.”

Will AI replace human writing?

Tay notes that although AI writing tools are quite powerful, they have not yet reached a point where they can write a scientific manuscript from scratch. “We still need researchers to analyse data, present them as figures, and develop a coherent story before feeding all this information to the AI machine,” she says.

Ryan Morrison, professor of English as a second language at George Brown College in Toronto, Canada, says that although the adoption of AI in academic writing is inevitable, it is unlikely to replace human writing in the near future.

“Just as super-computer calculators can process large sets of numbers fast, AI writing tools outperform humans in completing tasks like spell checks and text generation at a much faster rate,” says Morrison. “But the creativity of AI is ultimately limited by the input materials and the discretion of the human curator.”

Software such as Turnitin is also incorporating AI technology to enhance its ability to detect plagiarism. This could potentially be used to identify documents written using AI tools.

Be transparent about using AI writing tools in academic work

Michael Mindzak, assistant professor in the department of educational studies at Brock University in Ontario, Canada, cautions that the academic community has not yet agreed on how to manage potential problems related to AI writing tools, such as plagiarism and authorship credits.

Most institutions are yet to formulate policies on the use of these tools by students and staff. This can be problematic when committee members making decisions on tenure and promotion have different views about the appropriateness of using them, says Mindzak.

“My advice is to be transparent,” says Mindzak. “Declare and add a disclaimer if you have used AI-assisted writing. As more people in the community do this, it may become a norm, just like how the ‘conflict of interest’ section has been added to academic papers in response to a rise in company-funded research and start-ups from academic labs.”

AI chatbots (like ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot) can support UX researchers of all experience levels in planning their research.

Good research always starts with a plan.

A research plan is a document that outlines the research objectives and how the research will be executed.

Research plans should include:

  • The research goals or questions that the research is hoping to achieve or answer
  • The method to be used and a description of how it will be carried out
  • The tasks or questions that will be given to study participants
  • The profile of the target participants
  • The screener questionnaire used to recruit participants

Creating a research plan can be time-consuming. Even with a good template, a researcher must generate research questions, select the appropriate method(s), decide how to run sessions, and often create study collateral (like screeners and tasks) from scratch. The good news is that AI can help with many, if not all, of these tasks!

It can be tempting to just ask an AI tool to give you a research plan for a project. Don’t do that.

This kind of request results in a generic, template-like response, partly because AI lacks the context to propose a complete research plan and partly because of how the model has been trained.

To construct a useful research plan, deconstruct the plan into parts and have the AI chatbot tackle each part individually. You can assemble responses in a final research plan.

Don’t expect the AI to ask you the right questions in order to get a comprehensive outcome. View the AI tool as a UX assistant , not as a UX mentor. You need to feed into the AI all the steps and details you want it to consider.

Follow the steps below for the best results.

Step 1: Provide Context

Imagine asking an experienced colleague for recommendations on what research study to run without giving them any context on what project you’re working on and what you’re trying to achieve. They would probably say, "It depends on what you’re trying to learn.” Conversing with AI presents no exception.

Start your conversation with enough context , especially if the AI tool does not already have this information stored about you or your current project. ( ChatGPT 4 allows users to store context for each new conversation.)

The contextual information you share should include who you work for, the scope of your project, and what you’re looking to achieve. Remember that some AI tools may use your conversations to train their models, so share only information you would be comfortable with being in the open domain.

 Prompt Template: I work for [type or organization] . My company provides [what kind of product, service, or experience] . I need to run a user-research study to learn [something about users or a problem] .

Step 2: Generate Research Questions

After providing the AI tool with context, ask it to suggest specific research questions for the study. Here’s an example from a recent study on research repositories that I conducted for NN/g.

Prompt Example: I will run a research study and report on how UX practitioners across different organizations set up and use research repositories. Please generate 10 research questions that would be suitable for this sort of study.

It’s a good idea to ask generative AI tools for more options or ideas than you think you’ll need, because some will not be a good fit.

Who are the primary users of the research repository within different organizations? What motivates users to engage with the research repository? How do different teams (design, product, sales, marketing) access and benefit from the research repository? What challenges do practitioners face when contributing to or retrieving information from the repository? What types of research artifacts (reports, raw data, templates) are most commonly stored in the repository? How do organizations structure their research repositories? What tools and templates are commonly used to facilitate research repository management? How do practitioners ensure the quality and accuracy of information in the repository? What impact does the research repository have on decision-making and project outcomes? What strategies can organizations implement to encourage widespread adoption and active participation in the research repository?

To broaden your pool of research questions, ask for further research questions or provide the same prompt in a new session. Repeat this process as many times as you need to generate a list that feels exhaustive of what you’d like to learn.

Some of the research questions Copilot generated for me were appropriate, and others were not. As a result, I had AI generate more research questions to choose from.

Unfortunately, most AI chatbots don’t offer an easy way to dismiss suggestions or combine specific responses and work from only these (a behavior called apple-picking ).

Pulling in generated research questions into an offline document (like a FigJam or Google Doc) allows you to easily group items, remove duplicates, or reword suggested research questions.

Begin a new chat session with your selected and refined set of research questions, so that the unwanted research questions are removed from the chat history.

Step 3: Request Methods

After sharing the context and your chosen research questions, ask the AI tool to identify suitable research methods.

Example Prompt : What study would you suggest to answer these research questions? Please be specific; cite which research questions would be answered by which research method if you suggest multiple methods.

Generative-AI advice is not always good advice. Often, these tools will suggest various methods and suggest you triangulate data from multiple sources. This approach is not always needed. Also, not all methods will be practical or the best fit for your study. Additionally, AI may suggest interviews and focus groups even for research questions better suited to a behavioral research method .

Ask AI chatbots to tell you which research methods would be suited to which research question and why. We also recommend doing some further reading on your own about any methods that are unfamiliar to you.

In response to the prompt above (and given my chosen research questions), ChatGPT recommended a survey, interviews with select UX practitioners, and case studies. These were all my chosen methods, so AI had done well here!

Step 4: Request Inclusion Criteria

AI can create inclusion criteria — a necessary component of your research plan. Do this step only after generating research questions and methods since these will inform who should participate in the research study.

Inclusion criteria (or recruitment criteria) are specific characteristics of the target population that need to be represented in your sample.

Start with inclusion criteria before asking the AI to help you write a screening questionnaire ; AI can only craft an appropriate screener after it “knows” who you’re looking to recruit.

Example Prompt: So that I recruit the right people for my interviews, help me create some inclusion criteria. What characteristics or behaviors should I recruit for?

Step 5: Request Help with Screeners, Interview Questions, and Tasks

Finally, ask the AI to put together:

  • Interview questions or an interview guide (if conducting interviews)
  • Tasks for a usability test
  • Diary-study prompts (if relevant)
  • Recruitment confirmation emails or other communication messages.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad examples of the above on the web. Conversational AI has been trained on all this data. Therefore, don’t be surprised if it produces poor study collateral on its first attempt! This is a major risk area for new researchers.

One way to mitigate this danger is to give the AI tool advice when crafting any of these outputs . Think of AI as a new research assistant who can learn extremely quickly.

Common mistakes that AI tools make include:

  • Using words that appear in the interface in task instructions (priming)
  • Creating task instructions that ask users to imagine they are someone that they are not
  • Not including a goal or a call to action in the task instruction
  • Not including distractor options in screening questionnaires
  • Using overenthusiastic marketing language in recruitment materials

It’s not surprising that AI makes these mistakes since UX practitioners also make them!

To improve outputs, feed the AI essential tips, such as:

  • When crafting tasks: Do not use the name of words or link labels in the task instruction. Find a natural-language equivalent to explain what the participant should do . (You can ask AI to “read” a website or an image.)
  • When crafting recruitment materials: Use neutral and concise language in the recruitment email. Avoid using overly enthusiastic marketing language.
  • When crafting a screener: Include multiple-choice questions and answer options that might disguise what the study is about and who I am looking to recruit.

Additionally, when possible, feed the AI with good examples of screener questionnaires, tasks, or interview questions, so it can follow their format or style.

Even with this advice, AI can still make mistakes. If you’re doubting its answers, check primary sources or speak with an experienced researcher for old-fashioned human guidance.

Starting with a template

First things first: every business needs a good proposal template to simplify, track, and speed up the proposal creation and review process. When you think about it, only one thing constantly changes across projects - the client.

So, having a template for your services with your branding and in your style makes a lot more sense than doing it from scratch every time. With that in mind, we started by choosing a service (web design) and finding a template in the Better Proposals Marketplace.

Since all of the templates are already professionally designed and written, we’ll only need to change the project-specific details. And while this is a great time-saver, artificial intelligence can shorten your proposal research and writing time even more by turning your data into content.

Getting your data together

When it comes to AI generated content, the key thing to remember is that the output is only as good as the input. The more detail you can provide, the more chance you have of creating a usable project proposal.

At this stage, it's a matter of giving ChatGPT an outline of the information you already have and some details from the discovery call with your client. In our case, it looked like this:

Needs: Website that reflects the quality of the furniture, works on all devices, brings in more traffic and leads

While you have to give ChatGPT something to go on to help you in proposal writing, don't overdo it. In most cases, generative AI tools store the prompts you give them.

For data security reasons, don't input personal or confidential information. Alternatively, you can opt for modifying it by, for example, not using real personal or company names.

A proposal introduction or executive summary is the first thing your client will read. Since it sets the stage for the rest of your proposal, getting it wrong isn’t an option. Luckily, ChatGPT can take some of that pressure off your shoulders.

Using a fictional scenario of a web design company and the client, we gave ChatGPT the following prompt:

I want you to write a short introduction paragraph for a business proposal based on the following information:

  • — My company (BestDesigns) does web design
  • — The client (Mary) sells luxury furniture and needs a website
  • — Mary has provided my company with the logo, which will be the basis of the website design
  • — My company plans on delivering a functional and beautiful website
  • — Include a greeting and the client’s name + thanks for considering us

A few seconds later, we got the following output:

After reading the initial output, we decided it still needed a bit of work to match our writing style and support our template structure. So, we prompted ChatGPT to simplify the language and ended up with a much more suitable solution.

And since the template we chose starts with a headline, we also told ChatGPT to give a few catchy headlines for the proposal based on the information above. As a result, we got 10 headlines to choose from.

Guided by the template we chose, our next step was to write a brief, comprehensive overview of the work we’ll be doing in order to meet the client’s needs. We prompted ChatGPT to:

Take these meeting notes and turn them into a brief overview paragraph:

  • — How we'll do it: custom coding, professional copywriting, luxury design - expand these 3 by adding why it's necessary
  • — Reference the last meeting and the discussion and finish up by summarizing the results the new website will bring

The initial response was still a bit wordy for our taste, but a quick “shorten the paragraph above” straightened it out:

Once you’re past the introductory section of your proposal, you want to show your client that you’ve understood their pain points. If you would rather just start working and find it hard to put your expertise into words, it’s ChatGPT to the rescue.

Having identified the pages and resources the client needs on their website, now’s the time to convince them by listing out the benefits. Instead of starting from scratch, we put the following prompt into ChatGPT:

Use the following information to write web design project details for a business proposal:

  • — Use simple, relatable language and explain the benefits of having each of the web pages in short, informative and persuasive paragraphs
  • — Don't use bullet points and write as if you were speaking directly to the client
  • — My client needs a homepage, about us page, products page, testimonials page, and a lifestyle page on their luxury furniture website
  • — Their style is minimalistic and they don't want the website to look like a classic e-commerce store

The output we got was detailed, so the editing came down to leaving out unnecessary fluff and reordering a few things. All in all, we managed to get a decent result.

ChatGPT prompts to simplify your pricing

There’s no worse place to confuse your client than the pricing section of your proposal. Even if everything else you wrote was easy to understand, overly complicated pricing can result in distrust. What it ultimately comes down to is refraining from using industry jargon and simplifying your line item descriptions.

Once again, this is where AI comes in handy. Simply input your line items into ChatGPT and ask it to explain what they are. The prompt we used was:

“Describe [line item] in [industry] as a pricing table line item in one sentence. Use plain English”.

Like your dissertation or thesis, the proposal will usually have a title page that includes:

  • Why you believe this research is worth doing

As you get started, it’s important to demonstrate that you’re familiar with the most important research on your topic. A strong literature review  shows your reader that your project has a solid foundation in existing knowledge or theory. It also shows that you’re not simply repeating what other people have already done or said, but rather using existing research as a jumping-off point for your own.

In this section, share exactly how your project will contribute to ongoing conversations in the field by:

  • Comparing and contrasting the main theories, methods, and debates
  • Examining the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches
  • Explaining how will you build on, challenge, or synthesize prior scholarship

Following the literature review, restate your main  objectives . This brings the focus back to your own project. Next, your research design or methodology section will describe your overall approach, and the practical steps you will take to answer your research questions.

To finish your proposal on a strong note, explore the potential implications of your research for your field. Emphasize again what you aim to contribute and why it matters.

For example, your results might have implications for:

  • Improving best practices
  • Informing policymaking decisions
  • Strengthening a theory or model
  • Challenging popular or scientific beliefs
  • Creating a basis for future research

Some institutions or funders require a detailed timeline of the project, asking you to forecast what you will do at each stage and how long it may take. While not always required, be sure to check the requirements of your project.

For the last few weeks, I have seen many principal investigators (PIs) and professors announcing positions in the search for new graduate students. However, very few offer suggestions on what to include in the application, research proposal, or statement of purpose. In my Ph.D., not only did I get to work with different research teams, but I was also in charge of writing research proposals that ranged from fellowship applications to applications for industry and government grants. I would like to share a few tips and suggestions on how to improve your research proposal for those seeking to apply to graduate school, specifically those with machine learning backgrounds. The suggestions here can easily be adopted to improve proposals for fellowships, grad school, grants, scholarships, etc. I don’t claim that following my advice here will guarantee success. However, in my years of experience writing proposals and being a researcher, the following components really helped me prepare successful and strong research proposals.

Introduction

Like with anything you are writing, that first paragraph of your research proposal or statement of purpose should be clear and concise. Focus on making it about what your experience is and what topics you are specifically interested to investigate. You should seek to answer what is your topic of interest? Why you are interested in this topic (motivations should be clear and straight to the point), and a brief explanation of how you are thinking about approaching a future problem. It’s important to keep the introduction short and concise and let it serve as a high-level overview of what you are about to discuss in the proposal. Each of the sections that follow provides some guidance on how to strengthen the proposal, including what to include and what to avoid. It’s not an example of how to write the proposal but a recipe for strengthening and improving it.

Before thinking about the main points you are going to include in your proposal, think about the scope. There are so many things you can write about but you only have 1 or 2 pages to really make a strong case for why you are a strong candidate for the lab you are applying to. As you write your proposal you should think about a theme and how to keep everything concise. Defining a scope early on helps to focus on the important details you want to include in your proposal. Prepare a checklist of the most important points that should use as a guide for writing a strong proposal.

Be very specific about the topics and problems you are interested in. For instance, just saying that you are interested in robust machine learning may not be specific enough. Maybe state that you are particularly interested in understanding the linguistic knowledge learned by BERT models (this is a very rough example). The more specific you are the better. It shows that you have experience and an ability to scope the research. Along with this, mention a few of the research questions you are thinking about for the work you plan to conduct. These could be very rough research questions but they help to give the reviewer an indication that you are already thinking ahead about the work you will be conducting. That can only be a good sign for the reviewer.

You could be interested or are working on multiple topics which is not rare in machine learning research. Your job is to write a proposal in a coherent way, making sure to focus on an overarching theme. When researchers work on many different topics it could give a sign that they are not focused enough as a researcher. It could also show a lack of experience as well. Seasoned researchers are really good at providing a reasonable scope for their research projects and that’s quickly visible in the proposal. The scope and theme help to keep the proposals tidy and coherent.

Background refers to your professional experience, the background of the work you have done, and the one you intend to work on. You must be able to share your research experience, current background, and the precise topics you are highly motivated to investigate. This is typically easy to write about and you should already be an expert on this by now. In fact, as you go through this guide, you will see that I already assume you have a rough draft prepared. The hardest part is to find a theme that connects with the reviewer. You should definitely try to conduct a bit more research about the labs you are applying to and try to find themes that make sense to include. In some cases, PIs are interested in expanding the scope of the research lab and that’s where your unique expertise may be useful. Really, you should try different ways to showcase your work ethic, research goals, and resiliency as a researcher. The following important questions may pop up as you prepare your background and discuss your experience:

How important is my publication record? I see this question a lot. You are worried about the amount of publication you have affecting your chances to get accepted into your dream research lab. In my opinion, if the PI you are applying to cares too much about the number of publications it’s probably not a good idea to join this lab in the first place. I think this is just a myth. The number of publications alone doesn’t really say much about the quality of the researcher that you are and can be. With that said, I believe the number of publications is not so important if you are able to convince the reviewer that you are a keen learner and can go deep into a topic, including sharing your experience on how you overcome challenges along the way. The amount of publications is not the only indicator that reviewers are looking at. If you have other types of experiences like industry or teaching experience make sure to include and highlight those as well. Research experience can be demonstrated in many different ways not only through a high number of publications. If you break down what research consists of you will see tasks like team management, project management, experimentation, visualization, data processing, writing, reviewing, etc. These are all important to make a research project successful. Keep that in mind as you prepare your proposal and highlight the tasks that you are good at. There is always an opportunity to grow in other areas, that is expected.

What if the work of the research lab is unrelated to what you are currently studying or the theme you are focusing on? It could be the case that you are applying to a research lab that is doing work you are interested to investigate but are currently not involved in. Like I said earlier, there is still hope. Talk about your experience as a researcher and make it clear how you will be able to contribute. You may not be familiar with how to apply model X for topic Y but perhaps you have a lot of experience working with similar data Z which the lab is working with. There is usually something you can use to connect with the work the lab is conducting.

I don’t have much to say about the topic of “theme” here. The reason I include it as a separate section is to remind you of how important it is to find a theme for your proposal. You may be tempted to write about all the little details of your experience with the idea to impress the reviewer of your experience. However, in this case, typically, more means less. Determining the scope, your focus, and the specific topics you are interested in working on are more important. Less is more, but ensure you have compacted all the important stuff into a strong overarching theme. As an example, in my case, I worked on many different applied machine learning research projects in the context of social computing. I always focused on affective computing as a theme when writing proposals. This is my expertise and I always felt more comfortable writing about it. That’s the point. You should feel comfortable about what you are writing, otherwise, it will easily show in your proposal and you don’t want that.

Contributions

As researchers, we are always tempted to talk about “our” work as the work you have conducted in the different teams and projects you have collaborated on. There is nothing wrong with that. However, a research proposal is about what “you” have done specifically. Think about it. It’s really hard to convince others, through writing, about what exactly your expertise is. So try to focus on specific contributions you have made to the different research projects you have worked in. Write extensively about your contributions to the research projects not the contributions of others. We can’t all be good at everything. It’s important to focus on your strengths as a researcher and use that as a theme for the proposal. Remember, for this one time, it’s all about what you are capable of, not the team. It’s your time to shine.

Methodologies

Besides the background and the work you have done in the past, you are expected to provide more details about the topics you are interested to work on. This goes back to my earlier point about showcasing your experience. Seasoned researchers are typically good at writing about ideas and potential methodologies they plan to use. Talk briefly about the problem, the data collection strategies, the methods you propose, and the types of experiments you will be conducting. It needs not to be something definitive, it just must show rigor, readiness, and expertise. In fact, in most cases, topics evolve or change over time. It could just end up that you work on something completely different from what you proposed initially. Don’t worry about that for now. Just take the chance to emphasize your expertise and hands-on abilities.

Timeline/Project Management

Most people don’t talk about this in academia, perhaps because time is a very delicate topic. However, timing is everything. With so many deadlines, course work, and life itself, a graduate student must possess excellent project and time management skills. You should know exactly how much time a set of experiments might take and mention that in the proposal. Give rough estimates because at the end of the day things change as I mentioned earlier. Your ability to manage the project and timeline of it will make you stand out as a researcher. Timing is critical for both the student and the PI.

Besides time, you can also try to include the different components involving the work you are proposing to work on. You don’t have a lot of room to express this in a 2-pages proposal but you can do your best to provide rough estimates to give the reviewer the confidence that you are thinking ahead and are aware of all these important things. This shows maturity and experience.

If there is room, slightly mention what could cause delays or could potentially be a constraint for the project so that the PI knows what to expect and plan ahead. For instance, if your work might requires multiple GPUs to run experiments for two months then those details are very important to include in the proposal. Just keep it very short and don’t get into too many details. But this is a good chance to showcase your awareness and project management skills.

Future Goals and Objectives

You don’t need a future work section in a research proposal but I always considered including extra bits of information about myself that helped strengthen my application. In the past, I realized that being a researcher requires not only hard work but the ability to connect with the team and keep everyone motivated and encouraged. One way I kept research teams motivated is by discussing with them their future goals and objectives. Keeping that at the center of the discussion always allowed us to reflect on the importance of what we were working on. Displaying this in a proposal is not mandatory but if you have space in your proposal express what you ideally would love to get out of the experience. Are you planning for a postdoc or an industrial career? Sharing these goals shows that you are ambitious and that you are determined to succeed in the work you will conduct. Again, it’s all about showcasing the desire to grow.

Although the tools you will use don’t really matter that much at this point, it’s important to realize that besides your own work, you will be working in research teams in a lot of cases. Conduct a quick search on the projects published by the lab you are interested to join and make sure you are familiar or aware of the tools used by those researchers you might be working with. If you are not familiar with the tools, it shouldn’t matter that much but you should try to express in the proposal that you are willing to learn those frameworks and that you can do so easily given some timeframe. It’s all about making the reviewer feel confident about your expertise and ability to adapt. From what I have seen, integrity, maturity, and eagerness to learn are undoubtedly the best qualities of a seasoned researcher.

That’s all I have for you today. I believe that if you pay close attention to the points I discussed in this guide and apply them to your proposal it could give you an edge and an opportunity to join that dream research lab.
