THESIS – ARKITEKTURA
The project required students to choose a societal issue that they wanted to tackle, be it a large-scale national issue or a smaller-scale local issue. They were then challenged to come up with an aspirational architectural solution while still being satisfactorily grounded in reality. The project may not necessarily be currently buildable but based on new studies, discoveries, or technologies found through meaningful research, can potentially be constructed a few decades from now.
The final projects aim to address the students’ chosen societal issues using discovered innovations while reasonably responding to the projected prevailing relevant forces of its time.

Theses and dissertations submitted to the college of architecture, sub-collections under this collection, items in this collection, traditional rural houses in tanay, rizal, a design for the revitalization of the roxas boulevard waterfront: linking land and water.
Being an archipelago made up of over 7,000 islands, the Philippines is home to various land and water forms. Be it in the rural or the urban landscape, these bodies hold value in numerous aspects; thus, their protection is vital. Unfortunately, due to overuse and rapid modernization, the urban fabric has not been kind to these land and water bodies. Land has been replaced by concrete, and the water has become home to wastes and refuse. With this in mind, it is essential to take care of these lands and water bodies which can be achieved through the concept of revitalization, and this has been the goal of the thesis, from the findings and analysis until the results. Through the concept of waterfront revitalization, in tandem with Landscape Architecture, the thesis and its proposed development aims to bring to the spotlight the importance of protecting both the landscape, waterscape, and everything in between, particularly those in the urban setting. The proposed development revives the neglected Roxas Boulevard waterfront giving it a new life and renewed character. The enhancement of the area benefits the space and its users for both short-term and long-term phases. The land has been opened up to connect with the water, more open and green spaces have been allocated to serve as much as needed "lungs of the city", and the landscape has been redesigned to provide room for more activities serving economic, recreational, commercial, and leisure purposes. The thesis brings to the spotlight the importance of Landscape Architecture in today's green movement of protecting both the landscape and waterscape. The proposed development revitalizes the Roxas Boulevard waterfront which holds cultural and economic significance in the Philippine setting, particularly Manila.

D-link: redefining progress through an eco-transit hub in davao city.
During these times of rapid urban and technological growth, cities struggle to find the balance between modernization and environmental stewardship. Davao City, a first class highly urbanized city, and the third largest city in the Philippines, which serves as the center of trade and commerce in Mindanao, currently experiences this problem. To address the need for an efficient public transportation system, the city plans to upgrade its mass transport system through the High Priority Bus System (HPBS) under the Davao Public Transport Modernization Project. This comprehensive design project presents a design proposal for HPBS’ bus terminal in Davao City that seeks to redefine the meaning of progress that reflects the symbiotic relationship between modernization through an efficient transport system and responsible stewardship of nature and the environment. The proposed project - Davao Link or D-LINK, an eco-transit hub located in Calinan, Davao City, shall serve as a centralized transport link for various modes of transportation. The project makes use of strategic methods and design solutions to build a space to link the natural environment and surrounding agricultural areas with a state-of-the-art interchange transportation terminal.
Ang Simbahan ng Sta. Monica: an integrated risk assessment and condition survey of the Sarrat Church in Ilocos Norte
When describing how a natural phenomenon culminates in a catastrophe, the term "natural disasters" is commonly employed. However, this term is problematic because it incorrectly assumes that calamities are part of nature. Contrary to popular belief, it's important to recognize that there are only natural hazards, not natural disasters. This insight is consistent with the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR ) continuing advocacy efforts and mission. Humanity makes decisions on where to live, how to build, and what kinds of research to conduct. Cultural heritage faces various threats—from sudden events like earthquakes to gradual processes like degradation. Predicted decline in historical asset value illustrates the impact of risks on global heritage objectives. This paper was successful in proving how high vulnerability leads to increase risk in historic structures. It was guided by the principles of Disaster Risk Reduction & Management and the integration of science in heritage conservation. This paper offers mitigating recommendations to the key stakeholders with the goal of enhancing the resilience of the Sta. Monica Church by examining the interaction between the vulnerability of the church and the natural hazards threatening this cultural heritage. The methods outlined in this study may be a helpful first step for the preservation of historical buildings in developing cultures.

Architecture Design 2 Unit Chair: Dr. Mirjana Lozanovska Co-Chair: Anthony Worm Design Teachers: Marc Dixon, Fiona Gray, Eugenia Tan design orientation This semester will focus on the ‘making ofarchitecture’ in the more specific sense of the physical building and order of the environment. There will be two major themes explored: how materiality generates both the physical and aesthetic conditions of architecture; and how materiality organizes and frames social relations. These are elaborated below. Architecture is a product of imagination, ideas, traditions, cultural forces and it is also a product of technologies, construction, and structures. Experimentation, invention, manufacture and innovative ways of using existing materials define the field of the ‘making of architecture’. To be familiar with the tools, materials, techniques, technologies and structural possibilities of architecture is to build on the capacity of the imagination. Architecture is expanded and limited by how it is made and what it is made of. To resist and prevent a dormant imagination or an imagination that tends towards repetition, you will be encouraged to nourish it with the properties, processes and possibilities of architecture’s material conditions. Concepts such as tectonics, technics and technology will be explored through ‘hands on’ projects rather than theoretically. In a sense these all derive from the concept téchne which is conventionally understood as the science or art of making, the crafting of an object or tool. However, its deeper sense derives from the ancient Greek to refer to the process of making something appear, the letting out of the intrinsic properties within materials to inform their expression, form and usage. Technologies of the social emphasises architecture’s role in facilitating social relations, the ways that the materiality, spatial order, and various components (doors, walls, windows) set limits and open possibilities for the various relations between people, whether this be eating a meal, working, playing, or having a meeting or conversation. Architecture organises relations between people: person to person, person to group, person to crowd, group to group, etc. However, architecture also organises relations between people and objects: person to toaster, person to iPod, person to tool, person to monument. The important thing is that there are various different status objects: technological, aesthetic, consumable, kitsch, precious, profound, functional etc. At this point you can begin to understand how the two major themes meet and are overlaid onto one another. The materiality of architecture mediates the relations between people. In addition, a building is itself an object and is construed, used and perceived through its relation to people. This semester is about exploring how materiality generates architecture and organizes the relations between people and objects of a utilitarian, kitsch and aesthetic kind. It will ask you to examine the everyday garage or shed as a building type that is made in an ad hoc way. The garage is invariably not only the intended shelter for cars, but a place for a diverse array of other uses. This will ultimately form the platform for a design of a factory, warehouse or display centre.

Across culture and time, architects have interrogated the built environment and their role in shaping it. Questions of artistic agency, political power, social control, and cultural preservation all contribute to the fundamental debate of what architecture is—and is for. This syllabus aims to introduce students to the expansive theory, practice, and study of architecture. At once an examination of disciplinary history and theory, this course will investigate the diverse ways architects have understood their world (and situated their profession within it) by actively negotiating between written ideas, drawings, and built projects. To do so, this syllabus adopts an explicitly transnational perspective, challenging the Euro-American canon of architectural theory by presenting it as just one tradition amongst a range of cultural, geographic, and historical perspectives. Through exposure to a range of thinkers, students will be able to consider their own work within a diverse spectrum of theories concerning architecture, urbanism, and space.

The framework of the research undertaken by AUID doctoral students in the first semester (2021) traces a very varied landscape and often with interdisciplinary characteristics. Concerning the centrality of the architectural project, the backbone of the program, almost all the proposals introduce external elements involving other-dimensional scales, social and technical problems, and references to ecological, urban, and landscape issues.
