Coursera Update: Striking a Balance with Start Dates and Deadlines

October 9, 2015

If you’ve started exploring Coursera’s new Specializations , you’ve probably noticed that we’ve reintroduced start dates and soft deadlines for some courses on our new platform . We’ve received some great questions about this change, and you’ll find a few answers below – along with a little Coursera history lesson.

The philosophy: Why do we need start dates and deadlines?

Coursera’s earliest courses followed a standard academic schedule, with weekly deadlines and quarterly or annual sessions. As our community grew, however, our learners and partners pushed us to challenge traditional structures. In 2014, we began rebuilding our platform to cater to a wider range of teaching and learning styles.

The first courses on the new platform offered content “on demand,” with no deadlines and or fixed schedules. While this flexible format had many benefits, we lost something, too. Tools like forums and peer grading weren’t as effective when everyone completed work at a different pace. And, as it turns out, most of us need at least a little structure to learn effectively.

Most of us are like Calvin*. We need a deadline!

With sessions on the new platform, we’re working to balance structure and flexibility. Sessions run about once a month, so you’ll never wait long to join a course. And you’ll receive credit for all work submitted before your session end date, even if you miss the occasional weekly deadline. If you don’t finish the course in one session, you can transfer to the next and pick up where you left off.

In short, we’re aiming for just enough structure to sustain motivation and build community. We hope to see you in an upcoming session – and we hope the new format improves your Coursera experience!

The logistics: Sessions Q&A

Will all courses now have start dates and deadlines? No and yes. Some courses will run with sessions, and others will remain “on demand”. Both formats, however, will offer suggested deadlines. In on demand courses, you can turn off or adjust deadlines if the suggested schedule doesn’t work for you.

Check the course enrollment page to see which format a course uses:

sessions 2

What if I miss a suggested deadline or don’t finish the course in one session? No problem. There are no penalties for missing deadlines. If you fall behind in an on demand course, you can adjust the suggested deadlines, or turn them off. If you fall behind in a session-based course, you may need to transfer to the next session, but your record of completed assignments will transfer with you.

How can I find courses that are on demand or have sessions starting soon? Type a keyword in the catalog search bar at the top of the Coursera home page to find courses on a topic you’re interested in. Then, use the availability filters on the left-hand side of the page to find courses that are on demand or have active sessions open for enrollment or have sessions starting soon.

sessions 3

Can I join in a session after the start date? Session enrollment closes a few days after the start date, so if the session just started, you’ll still be able to enroll. Enrollment for the next session will open as soon as enrollment for the previous session closes, so you can sign up for the next session if you miss the window.

What can I do while I’m waiting for my session to start? As soon as you join a session, you’ll be able to preview the first week’s videos and assignments. All remaining content will become available on the start date, so you can feel free to work through the first week right away, and dive into week two when the session begins!

Deadlines for assignments in coursera print.

Modified on: Wed, 10 Nov, 2021 at 1:21 PM

Assignment deadlines

Most courses generate deadlines based on a personalized schedule that begins when you enroll in a course. If you’re taking a limited availability course, the info in this article may apply to you. Learn more about assignment deadlines for limited availability courses.

________________________________________

View deadlines

To see your deadlines and incomplete assignments:

  • Log in to Coursera.
  • Click the In Progress tab to see a list of courses you’re enrolled in.
  • Find the course you’d like to see the schedule for and click its name.
  • Click the Grades tab.
  • Check a specific week to see deadlines for that week's assignments.

Missed deadlines

Missed deadlines don’t affect your grade in most courses. You'll still be able to earn a Course Certificate once you complete all your work.

If you submit a peer-reviewed assignment after your personalized schedule ends, you might not get enough peer reviews. If you need more peer reviews, you can post in the forums asking for more peer feedback.

Note : Degree courses have hard deadlines which can include late penalties. For more information, see Degree course schedules and deadlines.

Reset your course deadlines

If you miss two assignment deadlines in a row or miss an assignment deadline by two weeks, you'll see a Reset deadlines option on the Grades and Overview pages. Click it to switch to a new schedule for the course with updated deadlines. You can use this option as many times as you need.

This won’t remove any progress you’ve already made in the course, but you may see new course content if the instructor updated the course after you started.

If you cancel a subscription and then reactivate it, your deadlines will automatically reset.

Note: Degree courses have hard deadlines which you can’t reset. You may be able to switch sessions if you fall behind. For more information, see Degree course schedules and deadlines.

In some occasions, you will have to write an essay in the extremely short amount of time on the exam in college or high school. Also, you may be a little bit of a procrastinator, and find yourself in a situation when the paper is due tomorrow morning, and you have not even chosen the topic yet. Even though a last-minute essay cannot look as great as a work prepared successively and carefully within the whole time given, you still have a chance to submit a decent paper. The working process will require your full attention and a lot of effort, even if you are assigned a simple essay. However, if you learn the next few tips, the essay writing will seem significantly easier and feasible even when you are short on time.

Firstly, clean up your working space to get started. Make sure you have everything you need on the table, take a pen, a few sticky notes, your laptop, and read through the assignment requirements. In case no prompt is given, search for good essay topics, and pick a few uncommon and interesting ones you will be able to write about. Making a final choice, think which topic is the most relevant to your current studies and will not take too much to research.

Afterwards, look for the most trustworthy sources or the ones you are certainly allowed to use. If you are not sure, access the online library or any free services where you can look for the books and articles for your essay. Use sticky notes to write down the information and put them in front of you to see how much data has been gathered and if you need to continue researching. Reread these notes from time to time and cross out the info you do not find relevant anymore.

When you have the data you need to produce a quality work, it is crucial to think about the structure of the future paper. If you are not sure how to write an essay outline properly, check what your essay type is first. Each type is organized differently, so you need to look up the structure every time you are given an essay homework. You can also search for an example of the essay on your topic, and adhere to its outline. No matter what kind of essay you are going to write, it is important to start with a thesis statement. It should declare what problem you will review in the paper, and which facts or arguments you will use to do it professionally. As these arguments will be discussed in the main part of the essay, outline the body paragraphs and put down a few sentences with the rough description of each paragraph. Think of the way you will engage the reader in the introduction, and which thought will be conclusive for the paper. When the direction of the work is clear from the outline, use it to draft the first version of the essay.

If you are not used to model essay writing, do not worry - your draft should not necessarily look like a masterpiece. It is only the depiction of your thoughts, and as you will have them written down, it will be easier to create a good essay. There is no best way to write an essay, so trust the working methods you usually use. You may like taking short breaks once in a few minutes, or write everything in one sit - just make sure to keep the focus on writing and avoid the urge to call a friend or watch something online. Thus, you will finish the paper faster, and will not feel guilty for engaging in other activities afterwards.

Do not forget to go through the essay a few times after the completion. Everyone makes typos and mistakes by accident, but it is about you to find and fix them before your teacher does. If you need help with an essay editing, try asking a friend or a family member to read and analyze your work. Also, you can order editing services in case your paper needs to be perfectly polished so that you can submit an ideal essay and get an excellent grade.

As these steps are simple to follow, you will not have any problems coping with an essay on time. Try the whole procedure at least once, and you will not have to use any other tips preparing an essay paper during your studies!

Assignments In Coursera

The assignments you’ll have to complete will vary depending on your individual course. But generally, there are three types:

  • Quizzes and Exams
  • Discussion Forums
  • Peer-Graded Assignments

Just like in college, the content of these activities will be based on what was included in the video lessons or reading material.

This “ Learning How To Learn ” course has easy-to-do assignments that aim to give students a better idea of how people struggle with critical learning issues, like procrastination, recognizing key elements of learning a subject, and preparing for tests.

In this case, they mostly grade you with different quizzes throughout the course modules .

Small quizzes are integrated into the course videos, which will help you discover if you understood the concepts correctly but won’t affect the final score.

Only the rated quizzes are taken into account ; you will find one in each module and a final test at the end of the course.

Coursera Review

They also have an active discussion forum . It’s not necessary to participate to complete the course , but you are encouraged to do it if you want to share your insight with fellow students.

There you can find relevant tips and stories from people that add valuable information to the content of the course.

It’s important to clarify that not all discussion forums can be like that .

If you choose a popular course, more people will likely be participating and sharing their experiences; but if not many are enrolled, then it’s possible to find forums with very few posts.

Finally, we have peer-graded assignments , which as its name so clearly explains, require you and your classmates to grade each other’s work.

Our chosen course has two, where we have to apply the concepts learned to objectives that are important to us.

These assignments are one of Coursera’s most important issues. And to explain why we’ll have to answer two main questions:

1) How Does The Coursera Schedule Work?

They give you suggested due dates to organize your schedule and prevent coursework from piling up. But you can submit quizzes and other assignments late, and there won’t be any problems with it.

Still, we highly recommend attending to these due dates, as a late submission could mean you won’t be graded.

To discover why we have to jump to our second question.

2) How Does Coursera Grade Assignments?

As we explained, you’ll have to review some of your peer’s assignments while they will grade yours. The course instructor sets how many activities you’ll have to review.

If you submit your assignment by the suggested due date on Coursera, you’ll likely get your grade within a week , as students usually review activities within three days of their deadline.

So, you and your classmates will be asked to provide a score for each part of the assignment. Final grades are calculated by combining the median scores you received for each section.

To finish the course, you’ll need to pass your peer-reviewed assignments. If you submit them on time, you’ll need at least one review from your classmates, even if the class asks for multiple reviews.

For example, if you upload your assignment throughout the week and only one peer reviews your work and grades it, that will be your final grade.

And here is where the problems begin.

Coursera review- seventh photo

If you submit an assignment late, you’ll need all of the peer reviews that the instructor requires to pass the class.

And this is an issue because depending on how late you upload it, there is a chance there won’t be enough active users to grade your work , meaning you won’t be graded and will have to re-upload it.

There is a secondary issue: you are not being graded by an industry expert but by someone who basically has the same level of knowledge as you!

Plus, you rely 100% on how your classmate wants to grade you. Even if your work is good and would otherwise be approved by a teacher, if your peer wants to fail you just because they want to, there is nothing stopping them!

And while Coursera users usually try to do their best and grade peer assignments fairly, there is a chance you have someone with the dishonored intention of poorly grading your work regardless of its quality.

Let’s say this is something that happens to you. What do you do next? Well, because you can re-attempt assignments and quizzes as many times as you want, you can always try again if you submitted it late and no one graded it or because you want to improve your score.

In case you do this, and there aren’t enough active users to grade you, you’ll have to keep submitting your assignment until there are.

That’s why keeping up with Coursera’s suggested deadlines is critical , so your classmates have enough time to review your work.

How Much Does Coursera Cost?

Coursera prices depend on what types of courses you are interested in, but as we previously explained, they offer many free courses.

Thanks to their Coursera audit option, you can watch all of the video lessons included in these programs , but you won’t be able to complete the assignments or receive an official certification.

You can finish the course for free first, and if you like it and find a good use for it, then pay for the certificate.

Now, if you are willing to invest in Coursera, here are their prices:

  • Guided Projects: Start at a $9.99 per month subscription
  • Professional Certificates and Specialization Courses: From $49 to $79 per month subscription

Our Verdict

So, what do we think about Coursera?

In our opinion, Coursera is one of the best online learning platforms to go to if you are looking for courses with professional certificates.

If you want to learn marketable skills and earn an official certification to include in your resume, Coursera is the platform for you.

Here, you’ll find a wide selection of top-quality courses in many areas , especially in the business industry and machine learning fields. Most of them are offered by major universities like the University of Michigan, Google, IBM, and Yale.

When completed, they will give you a certificate accreditation that proves your new skills to your current or future employers.

It’s great that anyone can access relevant courses for free with its Coursera audit option . At the same time, it’s a letdown that they don’t give any certificates this way; but having all the course video and lecture portions can be as useful as a completion diploma.

We believe that the courses’ individual prices can be a bit expensive, especially if we consider that some can take 1-6 months to complete. Suddenly, a $59 course turns into more than a $300 investment.

That’s why we mainly recommend subscribing to Coursera Plus if you have the time and inspiration. You can access thousands of top-quality courses, including professional certificates and specializations.

Pay for the monthly or annual subscription plan, and you can earn as many certificates as you can.

Coursera Free Courses

We wouldn’t recommend Coursera if you need human interaction when learning. All its courses are 100% online, and you don’t even get to communicate with the industry experts teaching the class.

The closer you’ll get to speaking with someone going through the same experience will be with the optional discussion boards or the peer-graded assignments.

And these assignments are an issue on their own. Someone with the same knowledge level reviewing your hard work won’t have the same effective result as the one an experienced professor would give.

Whether these people grade your assignment better or worse than they should, nothing guarantees you that their review is trustworthy.

In Coursera, you need to keep track of yourself. If you actually learned something or not will only depend on you; there won’t be a professor or classmates checking that you have understood.

So, if you enjoy a shared learning experience with real people involved, it would be wise to avoid online education platforms.

But if you have the motivation to keep yourself on the right track and the goal to learn something new, then we highly recommend you try Coursera.

  • Offers top-quality courses, hands-on projects, and professional certificates
  • Courses cover a wide selection of subjects
  • Has partnerships with universities and companies that are worldwide accredited
  • Has the Coursera audit option to take free courses
  • Coursera Plus is a great option if you want to take multiple courses
  • Individual courses can be expensive
  • Peer-graded assignments are not the best
  • No human interaction

Degree course schedules and deadlines, learner help center feb 13, 2023 • knowledge, article details.

Degree programs offer courses with specific start dates and deadlines for assessments. Learners in the same session move through a course together. Some courses may offer the option to switch sessions if you fall behind.

You'll need to complete your individual assessments by their deadlines to receive credit and avoid late penalties.

Refer to your program’s onboarding course for grading and session switching policy.

Late penalties

Peer review deadlines.

If you submit an assessment late, late penalties may be applied to the assessment. Your course staff may use late penalties to encourage learners to submit assessments on time and keep the entire class progressing at the same pace.

You’ll see info about the late penalty at the top of the page before submitting the assessment. If you don’t turn in an assessment before your course ends, it may count as a zero toward your final grade.

You can view deadlines for all assessments in a course on the Grades page or your Degree home page. Deadline and late penalty policies may vary by course or program. Check your course’s syllabus, normally in Week 1, for course-specific policies. For program policies, see the onboarding course .

You'll need to get all required peer reviews on assignments before the end of the course. If you don't have enough peer reviews on an assignment, you can post in the forums asking your peers to review your submission.
