Finalists And Winners of ‘Change’

Celebrating 10 Years of Literary Success

Ten years ago, it was but a dream.

To start an international writing retreat in what is probably the most picturesque region in Ireland.

Now it’s a success beyond our wildest imagination, expanding beyond the ‘Forgotten Land’ of Donegal along the famous ' Wild Atlantic Way ' across the Irish Sea to the French Mediterranean.

And then being voted number one creative retreat in the world by the Independent Publishing Group, Ireland " 12 creative escapes – from painting holidays in France to cooking in Galway ."

Not to mention, five years ago, being voted " ...one of the 10 best creative retreats in the UK and Europe, " by such a leading international publication as The Guardian newspaper, London.

During the past ten memorable years, we have welcomed writers from every walk of life, from nurses to lawyers, IT specialists to social workers, judges to teachers. And from so many countries including Iceland and New Zealand, Australia, the US and the UK to Germany. All lovers of words. And all ages, from young adults to septuagenarians.

We consider ourselves unique insofar as we combine creative writing with cultural excursions and culinary experiences. Holidays with a difference that offer bus tours to historic places, scenic walks, food and drinks tastings, fascinating author talks, exclusive music performances and daily workshops.

Before spending your hard-earned money to join us for one of these exciting weeks, take a few minutes to read about our philosophy and listen to testimonials from previous participants.

Joining ‘Ireland Writing Retreat’ means you will leave enriched in the following ways:

Confi dence - You will be part of a trusting environment, with others supporting you to strengthen your confidence, vital for better writing.

Creative process - You will receive close guidance in various stages of your creative process, from generating ideas, drafting a plan, first drafts, revision and editing, with constant feedback throughout the week.

Cra ft - You will learn about strategie s that will help you widen your imagination and senses, develop your observational skills and apply these techniques  to perfect your writing skills.

Cultural experience - Aside from daily writing workshops and author talks, in Ireland you will enjoy visits to an island, a hundred-year old thatched cottage, a castle, a national park, as well as exclusive traditional Irish music performances and special food and drinks tastings.

In France, excursions and activities include bus tours to charming medieval towns, open-air markets, an ex clusive Catalan dance performance in traditional costume, complimentary lunches, a sing-a-long evening and a guided walk through a spectacular moonscape rock formation.

“I came to the retreat with few expectations, preferring a ‘wait and see’ approach. I could not have imagined anything more perfect. This experience has been warm, adventurous, engaging. I have gained a focus and a new writing community. I will use the tools learned and the immersion experiences as long as I am able.”

Linda Muller, Iowa City, USA.

Crime, mystery, women's fiction, magic realism, fantasy, travel, memoir, poetry and creative non-fiction, 'Ireland Writing Retreat' has attracted successful authors in these genres to teach those wishing to learn the challenging craft of good writing .

These  award-winning authors  accomplish their task not through general lectures on theories of writing and editing that can be easily read in one of the many garden variety ‘Guide-to-Writing’ books, but through practical, hands-on teaching techniques including individual critiques of participant's own work completed before and during our week-long writing retreats.

Not only, these authors also share specific details about their own professional experiences (including failures) in the tough world of publishing and book marketing. In so doing, they provide invaluable lessons on how participants can overcome many of the common difficulties they will probably face before succeeding in having their short stories, novels, poetry and memoirs see the light of day in print.

“Thanks to Ireland Writing Retreat and to Sean Hillen for his invaluable editing skills and unwavering encouragement throughout the process. His support inspired me to push boundaries and explore new creative horizons. Retreat Co-ordinator Columbia provided unwavering support.

My recently self-published book, 'Wild Atlantic Way Anthology: Characters Along Ireland’s Majestic Coast Volume 1' has been receiving strong positive responses in local and regional newspapers.

I would like to express my appreciation and encouragement for others who want to embark on their writing journey with the support of Ireland Writing Retreat and Sean's expertise. I also enjoyed feedback from a diverse range of participants I met from all over the world; many remain good friends and supporters.

It is my hope that my book can inspire and resonate with readers.”

Mary Heeran  White, participant to Ireland Writing Retreat in Don egal and author of ' Wild Atlantic Way Anthology: Characters Along Ireland’s Majestic Coast Volume 1. '

“ This week was rich with local stories, informative and inspiring workshops with authors, interesting visits to traditional local sites, gorgeous landscapes, sunsets, songs and music. The people of Donegal are wonderful hosts including Sean and Columbia who welcomed us and co-ordinated and tutored a fabulous programme of events.  We were challenged to write every day and to discuss our writing with the other attendees. By the end of the week, we were sad to farewell the friends with whom we’d spent time and from whom we’d learned so much. Thank you, Sean and Columbia. It was all amazing. ”

Bridget Davidson, teacher, Dunedin, New Zealand.

“I came to the 'Ireland Writing Retreat' for inspiration and to become immersed in Irish culture. The experience was more than I hoped for. I'm leaving with the start of three new stories set in Donegal and new friends from three continents. It has enriched my writing and my life.”

Laurie Wagner, Director of Development, Lighthouse Writers Workshop, Denver , Colorado

If you want evidence of a place informing literature, in Ireland you don’t have to look far.

WB Yeats drew inspiration from the beauty of County Sligo (pictured above), James Joyce said he wanted to "give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed out of my book", and Seamus Heaney was influenced by his childhood years growing up in Bellaghy, County Londonderry.

You might wonder if Ireland has any inspirational places left for the rest of us. Is there a corner of the island that we can call our own, where a blank page comes alive with that prose and that poem we’ve been agonising over for months?

We needn’t worry. People such as Irene Graham have us covered.

The Burren, County Clare

The Burren, County Clare

Ireland’s literary heritage combined with its idyllic landscapes makes it an ideal location for a creative writing course, according to Irene Graham, founder of The Creative Writer’s Workshop . For Irene, “Raw beauty, comfortable surroundings and good food combined with creative writing workshops allow the writer to draw upon their unconscious, create and write.”

Irene believes “the writing environment, like time, is precious”. And the right backdrop is essential too. Surely, then, the west of Ireland is a must for any writer. Imagine being surrounded by Connemara’s smattering of lakes or the lunar landscape of the Burren, County Clare, while you write that next chapter – pure bliss. But according to Irene, that’s only touching the surface:

“The Creative Writer’s Workshop weaves ancient Ireland and the art of writing into memorable writing vacations. Writers can explore the mythical legends of Inis Mór Island or the Sligo countryside that inspired WB Yeats, and can amble around the rugged landscape of Clare Island – as a part of their writing journey.”

Connemara, County Galway

Connemara, County Galway

As one writer, Vivienne Nichols, from the USA found out, Inis Mór, retains the power to bewitch. “Creative writing on the magical, mystical island of Inis Mór was an extraordinary experience,” she notes. “Lyrics, lore and landscape offered refreshment, while Irene Graham’s mastery and generosity helped and inspired beyond expression”

With another two Aran Islands  to Inis Mór ’s east, there’s plenty of inspiration for everyone.

And if dreaded writers’ block does strike, just take a moment and drink in your surroundings. Imagine maybe how JM Synge felt spending his summers on the Aran Islands immersing himself in the local culture, or how Narnia came to life for CS Lewis as he traversed through the Mourne Mountains.

creative-mourne

The Mourne Mountains, County Down

Modern-day authors continue to soak up their Irish settings too. The late Maeve Binchy always gave her favourite Dublin locations pseudonyms in her novels; Roddy Doyle’s best work is set in north Dublin while Colm Tóibín included his native County Wexford in countless tales. In her award-winning novel, Solace, Belinda McKeon delicately reminded us not to overlook the centre of the island, with its pastoral romance and connection to the rural elegance that still beats at Ireland’s core.

With genealogy such a popular pastime these days, Irene wonders if “maybe our collective ancestral history is buried in the stones? And if it is, could there be a better place than the west of Ireland to explore it as you dig deep into your creative genes and write engaging stories?”

While many of Ireland’s sights may leave you speechless for some moments, we’re certain you’ll have plenty to write about them for many years to come.

Irene Graham is the founder of The Creative Writer’s Workshop  and The Memoir Writing Club .  She is also the author of The Memoir Writing Workbook.

“I’ve just got back from an extraordinary three days of deep learning at one of Niall Williams’ workshops for writers. Not every inspiring author is an inspiring teacher – but Niall Williams teaches with the same combination of sensitivity and precision with which he writes.  Over the carefully planned sessions, his insight into the craft of writing penetrated sharply, giving us the tools with which to sculpt our own work. Niall gave tirelessly of himself in every session, creating an atmosphere of profound acceptance and respect into which we wrote and critiqued with clear and transformative goals. He and his wife, Christine, provided a backdrop of warm hospitality, peppered with delicious convivial meals in their home.  You will come away changed as a writer.” –

With participants coming from the diasporic community, themes such as migration, home and belonging will be explored in a creative, collaborative and engaging way – with a large smattering of fun in the mix too!

Bealtaine writers’ group.

Bealtaine originated in a series of workshops offered by the Irish Writers Centre and Age and Opportunity as part of the Bealtaine Festival celebrating creativity in older people in May 1999.  Members of the group were so enthusiastic that they continued meeting monthly, losing and gaining members on the way. Now, twenty years later, they still meet monthly to write, read, and workshop poems.  Bealtaine is a democratic group where all share in facilitating new work and leading workshops. Bealtaine is currently not open to new members. Contact Peter Clarke at email below.

New Irish Communities Writing Sessions

The New Irish Communities group was established in 2015 by the Irish Writers Centre and is funded by Dublin City Council. The mission of the group is to create access for non-native English speakers to write creatively in English. These sessions bridge the gap between writing classes and writing groups as writers meet with experienced facilitators on Saturdays from 11.00am – 1.00pm. The workshops are facilitated by writers Mark Granier and Jean O’Brien and run for a number of weeks during spring, summer and autumn (dates vary). Whether you’re interested in fiction, prose or memoir, the group will help you to tell your story and express yourself well in English. Students should have a good level of English, be comfortable reading magazines and newspapers, and conversing in English. Cost: €5 per session. Buy online or pay on the day.

New Irish Community Extension (nIce)

When the New Irish Communities (see above) are not in session, the nIce Writing Group generally meets on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month from 11:00am -1:00pm in the Irish Writers Centre, or currently online. This extension of New Irish Communities is a group of like-minded non-native English writers, there for mutual support, to have discussions on writing and give feedback on each other’s progress in English. All authors of any genre are welcome to embrace the challenge of writing in a second language together!

Email them for more information at [email protected] or even better, drop in to one of their online meetings. They are looking forward to meeting you.

There may be some vacancies coming up soon.

Genre: YA Fiction

Contact Simone at email below.

WEB Women Writers’ Group

In 1987, Arlen House, the feminist publishing house, invited a group of twelve women writers to participate in a series of workshops. The initiative was designed to encourage and help Irish women to become serious writers, at a time when it was perceived that women were under-represented in the Irish literary canon. When the Arlen House project finished, eleven of the participants decided to continue meeting to peer review their own work. So the WEB Women Writers’ Group was born. Since 1992, the group has been happy to use the facilities of the Irish Writers’ Centre for its meetings, which are held once a month, on Saturday afternoons. Over the years, many of the WEB writers have established successful literary careers. Several have published books, had plays and film scripts produced, and many have won prestigious literary prizes. Membership of the WEB women writers’ group is by invitation only. At the moment, with eighteen members, the group is full.

The group operates on the assumption that members will try to attend at least three out of four meetings. Contributions of up to 1500 words, from works in progress, are circulated by email several days in advance. Spotlight: Faculty Board Member Rachel Cohen

Connecting human rights and creative writing..

Headshot of Rachel Cohen

  • Cohen’s writing traces connections between artistic life and politics.
  • She started working with the Pozen Center in 2016, helping UChicago community members share “migration stories.” Today she shares tips on the writing process with Pozen students preparing for fieldwork.
  • Her first book, published in 1994, was just reissued by the venerable New York Review Books press, and is the subject of an Author’s Guild online seminar series running through December.

Pozen Faculty Board member Rachel Cohen has long been interested in the interplay between artistic life and politics. Her first book, A Chance Meeting , first published in 1994 and reissued this year by the venerable New York Review Books press, examines American thought from the Civil War to Vietnam through the lens of transformative encounters between writers, artists, and thinkers grappling with the central questions and struggles of their eras, from race to war. As the book’s narrative unspools, it shows how the unpredictable collisions of daily life – professional interactions, artistic striving, political arguments – affect the development of ideas and become the stuff of history.

Cover of Rachel Cohen's book A Chance Meeting

It is fitting, then, that Cohen’s involvement with the Pozen Center came about when her own practice as a writer intersected with developments in American political life. “After the presidential election of 2016, it seemed that contemporary migrants were in a particularly vulnerable situation,” she recalls. “I wanted to do something that helped remind people that we all have our migration stories, whether in our immediate histories or in our family histories. Migration is an almost universal part of the human experience, but we easily forget that.”

Along with colleagues in the creative writing department, where she is Professor of Practice, Cohen created “Migration Stories,” a project designed to help people in the UChicago and South Side communities tell and circulate stories of how their families had come to the city from somewhere else, whether recently or in the distant past. Soon there were Migration Story readings happening around Hyde Park; eventually, multiple chapbooks and an anthology were published. Cohen and her colleagues also designed new courses around the writing of migration and developed an undergraduate research cluster on the topic.

Helping to organize these projects brought Cohen into contact with members of the Pozen Center community who apply the human rights lens to immigration issues. In 2019 she read excerpts from the Migration Stories anthology at a Pozen Center event celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights . In 2021 she joined the Faculty Board, hoping to strengthen connections between UChicago’s creative writing and human rights communities.

STRESSING THE VALUE OF PROCESS

Cohen’s essays and books – including a biography of the art connoisseur Bernard Berenson , and a memoir of her experiences reading Jane Austen – have been published by the most prestigious magazines, journals, and publishing houses around. But she sees these publications as just one part of her work as a writer.

Recent selection from Rachel Cohen's Instagram

“I’m just as interested in the process as the formal final product,” Cohen says. The proof is available to anyone with an Internet connection. In “notebooks” that Cohen posts on Instagram and other online channels, she documents her writerly engagement with her preoccupations, working through thoughts in a space that’s different – ”a little less hard-edged, a little more homemade,” she says – than, say, the pages of The New Yorker .

This year Cohen will visit the Pozen Center’s new Human Rights Fieldwork course and share with students how keeping a journal during fieldwork can help organize and clarify their thinking; a well-kept journal, she explains, creates an invaluable resource for students when they return from the field and sit down to write more formally about what they learned.

LOOKING AHEAD

During the early months of the Covid pandemic, with many museums closed, Cohen started focusing her critical eye on public art in Chicago, eventually writing a piece for Travel and Leisure about murals and other public artworks on the South Side . Doing this research brought her into contact with the Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project (PNAP), a program that connects artists and scholars with incarcerated students at Stateville Maximum Security Prison; in recent years, incarcerated PNAP students designed murals that outside collaborators – including Cohen – helped paint on walls across the South Side.

Cohen hopes experiences like these will inform her next steps as a Pozen Faculty Board member looking to help students make connections, like those she herself makes in A Chance Meeting , between questions of politics and history and the creative arts. “Creative works are part of how ideas, including ideas about human rights, make their way in the world,” she says. “They also help us look back and make sense of those journeys over time. That’s why I’m so excited to be working with the Pozen Center. It’s a place on campus where those journeys get taken seriously.”

From May to December of 2024 The Author’s Guild is hosting a monthly series of online talks  inspired by the reissue of A Chance Meeting . The first and the last will be by Cohen, speaking on the general themes in her book book; the six in between will be by prominent writers and critics, each focusing on one of its featured literary figures, and accompanied by a written reflection by Cohen, delivered to attendees by email.

EMCC STUDENTS PLACE IN STATEWIDE CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST

April 30, 2024

Two East Mississippi Community College students placed in the 2023-24 Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association’s (MCCWA) annual workshop and contest.

Students from community colleges across Mississippi competed in categories that included Creative Nonfiction, Dramatic Writing, Literary Essay, Poetry and Short Fiction.

EMCC student Elizabythe McBeth took second place in the Short Fiction category for her piece titled “Faded Footprints.”

“It’s like me walking back through my grandparents’ house,” McBeth said. “I would stay with them, along with my two cousins. It was kind of reminiscing about that.”

Arin Franks poem, “Creating for You” earned second place in the Poetry category.

East Mississippi Community College student Arin Franks, at right earned second place in the 2023-24 Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association’s (MCCWA) annual workshop and contest in the Poetry category. Here, she is recognized by EMCC Creative Writing instructor Marilyn Ford, at left, during the annual Awards Day for students on the college’s Golden Triangle campus.

McBeth is a Columbus native who is taking general studies on EMCC’s Golden Triangle campus. She plans to enroll in the Mississippi University for Women’s Department of Baccalaureate Nursing once she graduates from EMCC.

Franks is a Springville, Alabama native who resides in Columbus. She graduated from EMCC last year with majors in political science and English. She is enrolled at Mississippi State University where she is studying pre-law, with an eye towards enrolling at a law school. The MCCWA contest includes entries written in 2023 and early 2024.

Submissions by McBeth and Franks were written while taking EMCC humanities instructor Marilyn Ford’s Creative Writing class.

“Arin is an absolute wonderful poet,” Ford said. “She is a very introspective young lady and her poems are oftentimes about the evolution of self and that transitory time when we begin to try to figure out who we are in our teens.

East Mississippi Community College student Elizabythe McBeth earned second place in the 2023-24 Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association’s (MCCWA) annual workshop and contest in the Short Fiction category.

Works by Franks and McBeth were also featured in EMCC’s magazine of creativity titled “Syzygy.”

The magazine highlights the works of EMCC students in categories that include Ceramics, Creative Nonfiction, Design, Short Fiction, Drawing and Poetry. Faculty advisors and judges choose the winning entries to be included in the magazine.

Franks earned first place in Poetry in the 2023-24 edition of “Syzygy,” while McBeth took top honors in the Short Fiction category. McBeth was also named the recipient of the Betty Killebrew Literary Award, which recognizes the top submission amongst all entries.

Other winners include Haidi Salihaj, who earned first place in the Design category, and Breelyn Smith, who took top honors in the Drawing Category. The winners were honored April 23 during Awards Day on the Golden Triangle campus when instructors recognized their “outstanding students” for the past year. McBeth was also recognized as the “Outstanding Creative Writing Student.”

“I am always pleasantly surprised by the quality of the submissions to our ‘Syzygy’ magazine each year,” Ford said. “This year was no different. We have some very talented students and I am proud of what they have accomplished.”

"East Mississippi Community College has the nicest instructors that have helped me to grow and become a better student. Going to EMCC has brought me many opportunities to excel within the college.  I have made an incredible number of close friends here and an infinite amount of memoires that at East that I will bring with me when I transfer to a four year college."

Anna Borst

"East Mississippi Community College has been an incredible launching pad for my future! The professors here have truly cared about me and have gone above and beyond to make sure I succeeded. From the Ambassadors program to PTK to student government, EMCC offered a supportive environment for me to get involved and hone skills I will use in the future.  My favorite aspects of EMCC have been my teachers' easily accessible office hours and the writing center.  These made a huge difference in my confidence and prepared me for the challenges of a four-year university. I'm so grateful for the knowledge and experiences I've gained here!"

Cooper Sanders

“I chose EMCC because it gave me the best opportunities coming out of high school. I got plenty of scholarships because the school offered so many. I would not have been able to do half of the things that I have done if i didn’t come here. First generation students are already at a disadvantage. If you are able to you should get an education to break the generational curse and create generational wealth for your family. Education is the most powerful tool.”

Nadyn Samara

"EMCC isn't just a place to learn, it's home. From the vibrant festivals to the passionate instructors, every corner offered an opportunity to grow. Public speaking not only honed my interview skills but also instilled the confidence to think on my feet. Most importantly, the time at EMCC flew by because it was filled with friendships, challenges overcome, and memories made. To anyone stepping onto campus for the first time, embrace every moment, make connections, and remember - there's a whole community invested in your success."

Madison McCarter

“EMCC has truly become my home!  From the scholarships offered, to the faculty & staff, and friends I have made, I am so thankful I chose to continue my education here!”

Reflecting on Our Journey Together

In Thought Leadership

Gratitude and Farewell: Reflecting on Our Journey Together

Chris’ departure from DL&I marks the end of an era that saw BU through the advent of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and the Online Master’s in Business Administration (OMBA), surviving the COVID pandemic, and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). As Chris embarks on this new chapter in his journey, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for his work for the past eight years as Associate Provost for Digital Learning & Innovation.

With enthusiasm to spare, curiosity to match, and big-picture thinking to connect technology and learning in imaginative and practical ways, Chris has been tireless in his efforts to spearhead groundbreaking initiatives that have elevated BU's standing as an innovator in higher education.

In our restless work environment, ‘tomorrow’ (or sooner!) is often a deadline and reflection is frequently a luxury. Nonetheless, under Chris’ direction, much has been achieved against what sometimes seemed impossible odds. Through his vision, the Digital Learning Initiative (DL&I’s precursor) launched and helped develop online at-scale courses (formerly known as MOOCs), which established BU as a leader within the edX consortium and acquired a solid reputation as a partner who produced high-quality MOOCs . The success of this initiative became a springboard for the development and success of the next two: MicroMasters programs and the OMBA program, masterfully executed under Chris’ leadership and guidance, which led to an explosion in online at-scale courses at BU and the creation of BU Virtual.

The success of the turn to remote instruction in March 2020 also owes a great deal to Chris’ relentless drive and attention to detail: under Chris’ guidance, the Remote Teaching Coordinators group met for months, including every day for many weeks, creating a committed community to support colleagues during the traumatic and demanding circumstances of change in the pandemic. The faculty Lightning Talks, organized by the Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) in partnership with DL&I, began during this time and were inspired largely by Chris’ unswerving aim of providing a meaningful educational experience to BU’s students during quarantine and social distancing. More recently, Chris’ enthusiasm and dedication to helping faculty navigate teaching in the age of AI has been seen through several initiatives in collaboration with CTL, like the Generative AI Info Series, Chat GPT Symposium, and AI Teaching Co-labs.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Chris’ personal touch has left a lasting impression on us all. As he transitions back to faculty at the Questrom School of Business, we do not doubt that Chris’ expertise and passion will continue to enrich the academic experience of BU students.

On behalf of the DL&I community, we express our deepest appreciation for Chris’ work and eagerly anticipate exciting opportunities as we continue to build on the strong foundation we established together.
