Furniture Design Masters Theses

Highly experimental and individualized, the graduate program in Furniture Design supports each student’s artistic development and articulation of an individual design philosophy through the conception, design and construction of furniture and related objects. The work produced ranges from one-of-a-kind objects, to designs for limited or mass production, to experimental, conceptually based projects. Aesthetic considerations in conjunction with a fluent use of materials and processes to support individual design concepts are paramount.

MFA candidates produce a final body of work and accompanying written thesis as an articulation of the graduate process, simultaneously aiding self-definition and demonstrating a personal point of view. MFA candidates are also required to mount a professional solo exhibition. Their personally selected thesis committee assists in developing a timeline for the exhibition based on assessments of each student’s proposal and progress. In addition, graduating students exhibit in the RISD Graduate Thesis Exhibition , a large-scale public show held annually.

The Conceptualisation and Development of a Space-Saving Multipurpose Table for Enhanced Ergonomic Performance

Profile image of Adi Saptari

Foldable furniture is a trend of the modern furniture industry. However, apart from limitations attributed to multifunctionality and space saving characteristics, a complete design process documentation of foldable furniture is uncommon in furniture research. This study aims to develop a space-saving multipurpose table for improved ergonomic performance. Features and functions are extracted from research articles and patents for concept generation. The final concept is modelled using Autodesk Inventor Professional 2019. Mechanical simulations are done to confirm the structural integrity of the invention before prototyping and testing. The tests accounted for usage efficiency, space and usability. Using Minitab 19, the experimental data are analysed with t-tests. The survey data are analysed using Spearman’s correlation test via IBM SPSS Statistics version 21. Participants were able to complete tasks around 1.1–1.5 times faster with the proposed invention than with single-function fu...

Majority of the Indian middle class population are living in small flats and homes mostly because of their economy scale as well as the lack of space availability for living. In the present scenario, furniture occupies a majority of the space in the home interior causing spaces congested. To overcome this problem the furniture should have a multipurpose than their primary function. It is mainly of generating a new concept in furniture. This study is approached to design and develop a multipurpose space saving dining table for Indian middle class homes. A study was made to understand the lifestyle, need and comfort in the Indian homes as well as different activities associated with specific interiors. Several furniture design stores where visited in order to understand the present market scenario, demand and needs of the customers. Existing dining furniture was analyzed in detail including its components and parts and their assembly and sub-assemblies. After the study, the product is created by considering the cost reduction of the product Drawings were developed for final concept, and designed using SOLIDWORKS 2016 and analyzed using ANSYS software. A prototype was made and the ergonomic validation was done. The proposed concept is found to occupy just less than its deployed area. We thereby believe that the proposed design will largely suits the constrained space conditions of the urban segment in India.

The room that is not too wide makes the residents of the house have to be smart in the arrangement and selection of goods. That is why, the use of multifunctional furniture is needed to to have more than one use in one product. By using multifunctional furniture, it is also useful in facilitating user activities because of its flexible nature. The concept of multifunctional furniture design to save space should take into account the rules of ergonomics by prioritizing user comfort and safety. The design of the multifunctional dining table in this study uses the Ergonomic Function Deployment method which is the development of the Quality Function Deployment method by considering the ENASE aspect (Effective, Comfortable, Safe, Healthy, and Efficient). The design proposed is comfortable to use and has flexibility that can be adjusted to the user's needs with limited space. This dining table is also equipped with storage space at the bottom and is easy to move around.

REVISTA DE CIENCIA Y TECNOLOGÍA, 2024

With the great immigration to the urban area, resulting from the Industrial Revolution in the 17th century, the living spaces have been decreasing more and more over the years. Other factors contribute to such data, such as an increase in the general population and a decrease in the number of members within a household. These spaces are often not designed to serve the user as a living and working space. However, with the significant increase in home office work, mainly due to the covid-19 pandemic, many people found themselves in the need to adapt their living space to work and where they find it more difficult. At this point, multifunctional furniture has become an excellent option for users of small spaces and who need more use. The present work used the methodology of Design for Innovation Generation, where the objective was to develop a multipurpose furniture for small environments so that it could be used as a home office. For this, the main needs of users were raised, and after identifying all the requirements, a piece of furniture was proposed, consisting of a panel and a table, which together allow its use as a fully ergonomic workspace, adjustable according to the user’s needs, and also as a living room sideboard.

Purpose. This paper presents the process of developing ergonomic students`desks through an integrated product team approach. Methodology. The design process used integrated product team approach. Numerous quality tools, customization techniques and strategic tools/techniques including: QFD, Ergonomics Principles, Kano Model, SCAMPER, Brainstorming, Pareto Principle, Cause-and-Effect Diagram and House of Quality were successfully applied. Also, Anthropometric measurements were used in making detailed designs. Findings. Various health problems from students who were using unergonomic furniture were well-identified. Finally, two improved designs were developed with the help of Solid Work-2016 software. Desk (Alternative-A) considered "Design for adjustability principle" which can accommodates 90% of all students (5th Female to 95th Male) percentile while Desk (Alternative-B) considered 50th percentile ("Design for average principle"). Conclusion. The two desks`designs were prepared with the help of actual data from three colleges. Verification, validation and evaluation process for desk`s designs and data were successfully done. This makes the designs to have practical validity. Therefore, implementation of these results will assist in reduction of Musculoskeletal Disorders problems, neck problems, back pain and pressure on hips. Ultimately, it's expected that the comfortability and satisfaction level to students will increase.

The technological developments in every extent cause the office interiors to change, the furniture to be updated. This situation brings along new concepts in working spaces and furniture design. Because the changing activities require different technologies in the offices that consist of individuals coming together for the same purposes, especially the Y generation born between 1981-2000, raised in the 4th Industrial Revolution era has an important effect on workplace designs. In this era where modern information and mobile technologies come into prominence; the family and social life culture is changing rapidly and man power is slowly getting behind robotic-smart systems. The Y generation has different choices from their clothes to working hours, from their thinking to the way they work; so they demand flexibility in every aspect in their offices. This situation affects the use of technology, and working systems more and more each day causing us to rethink the working areas and how we use the office furniture.

Interaction design has become one of the most trending design approaches growing rapidly, developing every usable type of product. It represent according to David Kirsh a new world of physical, natural, and tangible interfaces. We can interact with digital elements by gesturing and body movement, by manipulating everyday objects and even by training brain activity to control interfaces. But interactive furniture design has a very special nature, due to several reasons and factors that affects the process of developing it. Usability and sustainability with their sub-branches like UX could be considered the main source for these reasons and factors, because both of them include and represent nearly all the majority of modern criteria that control designer’s way of thinking and all design process. For example, the furniture will be transformed into a kind of electronic product with increasing obsolescence, what will cause an environmental limitation. In this paper, we criticized the cu...

The attempts and requirements to increase safety and comfort of the office working environment as well as work performance are realized in many different ways. Current aspests and actual needs of a dynamic user of the office furniture exceed the available solutions, requiring interdisciplinarity of design with respect to this issue. The review of requirements upon the design of office working areas and equipment should help define a new design concept and forecast new trends in office furniture.

The objective of the research was to develop a furniture set that consists of a multifunctional bed, study table and a cabinet. A room at Adeniyi hostel of Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria was used as case study. A pre-study was performed to define the problem area and to set the requirements for the furniture. The pre-study included: studies and discussions with students, literature review within the field, user survey, market search and ergonomics study. When the specification was set and clarified, the concept generation phase was started. Design methods were used to structure and support the design activity. In addition, principles of inclusive design were followed in order to end up with a design that would fit a larger part of the targeted customer group. The generated design concepts were assessed according to fulfillment of set requirements. One final concept was chosen for further development in the following detail design phase. This activity included specifying the design in detail, e.g. related to materials, colors and accessories. The collaboration with the supervisor was essential during the whole project for getting inspiration, feedback and important inputs to the design activity. Hence, the supervisor's opinion was continuously considered along the design process. A prototype was made of the final design and tests were performed to assess the design and to get input for further development. The motive behind the research is to improve comfort of a growing population with a minimum cost and optimizing space.

The Variety 0f Art, Design, and Fashion Thesis Topics

The world of art, design, and fashion is constantly evolving, driven by technological innovations, cultural shifts, and societal demands. Whether through visual communication, product design, or fashion marketing, these fields offer boundless opportunities for creative expression and problem-solving. Writing a thesis in art, design, and fashion allows students to explore their passions while addressing current challenges, examining recent trends, and imagining future directions. This article outlines the diverse range of thesis topics available in these creative disciplines, focusing on current issues, recent trends, and future directions, providing students with valuable insight into the scope of their research.

Current Issues in Art, Design, and Fashion

Sustainability in Design and Fashion One of the most pressing issues in the fields of art, design, and fashion is sustainability. As the world grapples with climate change and environmental degradation, there is growing awareness of the need to reduce waste and create eco-friendly products. In fashion, the fast fashion industry is facing criticism for its significant environmental impact, leading to the rise of slow fashion and sustainable practices. Designers are now exploring the use of organic, recycled, and biodegradable materials to minimize their carbon footprint. Thesis topics in this area could focus on sustainable fashion production, the role of circular design in product development, or the impact of eco-friendly materials on consumer behavior.

In interior design, sustainability is also gaining momentum. From energy-efficient lighting to the use of recycled materials in construction, designers are challenged to create aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible spaces. A thesis exploring how sustainable materials influence the design of public spaces or how energy-efficient design can enhance the well-being of occupants would be timely and relevant in today’s climate-conscious society.

Cultural Representation and Inclusivity Another significant issue in art, design, and fashion is the need for greater cultural representation and inclusivity. The art world has long been criticized for its lack of diversity, and there is a growing movement toward showcasing underrepresented voices and perspectives. This movement is also evident in fashion and design, where inclusivity is becoming a key focus. Designers are increasingly considering diverse body types, gender identities, and cultural backgrounds in their work. Thesis topics in this area might examine the evolution of inclusive design in the fashion industry, the representation of marginalized communities in contemporary art, or the role of cultural heritage in shaping design trends.

The intersection of technology and cultural representation is another area ripe for exploration. Digital media and augmented reality (AR) are providing new platforms for artists and designers to showcase diverse narratives. A thesis investigating how digital tools are used to enhance cultural inclusivity in visual communication or how AR is transforming the representation of indigenous art could offer fresh perspectives on inclusivity in the creative industries.

The Impact of Technology on Art and Design Technology is reshaping the landscape of art, design, and fashion in unprecedented ways. The rise of digital art, AI-generated designs, and virtual fashion shows is challenging traditional notions of creativity and craftsmanship. Artists and designers are now using tools such as 3D printing, digital sketching, and motion graphics to push the boundaries of their work. For instance, digital fashion, where clothing exists only in a virtual environment, is gaining traction as a more sustainable alternative to physical production. A thesis topic exploring the impact of digital tools on the fashion design process or how AI is influencing product design could delve into the creative potential and limitations of technology in these fields.

Additionally, the rise of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) in the art world is transforming how art is bought, sold, and owned. Artists are using blockchain technology to authenticate and sell digital artworks, creating a new market for digital art collectors. A thesis could examine the implications of NFTs for the future of the art market or how blockchain technology is influencing the value and ownership of creative works.

Recent Trends in Art, Design, and Fashion

Digital Transformation in Creative Fields The digital transformation of art, design, and fashion is one of the most significant trends in recent years. As more creative professionals turn to digital tools and platforms, the lines between traditional art forms and new media are blurring. Digital media design, in particular, has seen rapid growth, with designers incorporating motion graphics, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) into their work. These technologies are enhancing user engagement and creating immersive experiences, which are becoming increasingly popular in advertising, gaming, and entertainment.

In the fashion world, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital fashion shows, virtual fitting rooms, and online shopping experiences. Designers are now experimenting with 3D design software to create digital garments that can be “worn” in virtual spaces. A thesis exploring the impact of digital tools on fashion marketing or how AR is being used to enhance customer experiences in retail would align with this growing trend.

Personalization and Customization In both fashion and product design, personalization is becoming a key trend. Consumers are increasingly seeking unique, customized products that reflect their individual preferences and values. This shift is driven by advances in manufacturing technologies, such as 3D printing and mass customization, which allow designers to create personalized products on demand. A thesis examining how personalization is influencing consumer behavior in fashion or exploring the use of 3D printing in custom product design could provide valuable insights into this growing trend.

In the digital media space, personalization is also gaining traction as brands use data-driven design to tailor content to individual users. From personalized websites to targeted advertising, designers are leveraging user data to create more engaging and relevant experiences. A thesis focused on the ethical considerations of data-driven design or how personalization is shaping visual communication strategies could offer a critical analysis of this trend.

Collaboration Across Disciplines Collaboration between different creative disciplines is another key trend shaping the future of art, design, and fashion. As the boundaries between these fields become more fluid, designers, artists, and technologists are increasingly working together to create innovative, cross-disciplinary projects. For example, the integration of fashion and technology has led to the development of wearable tech, where fashion designers collaborate with engineers to create clothing that incorporates digital elements, such as sensors or interactive displays.

Similarly, product designers are collaborating with environmental scientists to create sustainable products that meet both aesthetic and functional needs. A thesis exploring how interdisciplinary collaboration is driving innovation in design or examining the role of technology in facilitating cross-disciplinary projects would align with this emerging trend.

Future Directions in Art, Design, and Fashion

Sustainable Innovation As sustainability becomes a top priority for industries worldwide, the future of art, design, and fashion will likely be defined by eco-friendly innovations. Designers are increasingly focusing on creating products that minimize waste and use sustainable materials, from biodegradable textiles in fashion to recyclable packaging in product design. A thesis that explores the future of sustainable fashion materials or investigates the role of industrial design in promoting circular economies would contribute to this critical conversation.

Additionally, sustainable architecture and interior design are expected to play a significant role in the future of the design industry. Green building practices, energy-efficient designs, and eco-friendly materials will shape how spaces are designed and built in the coming years. A thesis that examines the future of sustainable interior design or explores the role of smart technologies in creating energy-efficient buildings would align with this forward-thinking direction.

The Role of AI and Automation Artificial intelligence (AI) and automation are set to revolutionize the creative process in art, design, and fashion. From AI-generated artwork to automated product design, technology will continue to play an increasingly dominant role in shaping creative industries. In fashion, AI is already being used to predict trends, optimize supply chains, and create personalized shopping experiences. A thesis exploring how AI is transforming fashion retail or investigating the role of automation in product design would provide insight into the future of creativity in a tech-driven world.

Additionally, AI-generated art is challenging traditional notions of authorship and creativity. As machines become capable of creating original artworks, the role of the artist is shifting. A thesis examining the ethical implications of AI in the art world or exploring the potential of AI in collaborative creative processes could offer valuable contributions to this emerging area of research.

Globalization and Cultural Exchange Globalization will continue to influence the future of art, design, and fashion, leading to greater cultural exchange and collaboration across borders. As creative professionals engage with diverse cultural perspectives, new design languages and artistic movements will emerge. This cultural cross-pollination will create opportunities for designers to incorporate global influences into their work while maintaining a strong sense of cultural identity.

A thesis that investigates how globalization is shaping contemporary fashion design or explores the impact of cultural exchange on visual communication design would offer a forward-looking perspective on how creativity is evolving in an increasingly interconnected world.

The fields of art, design, and fashion are vibrant, dynamic, and constantly evolving. By focusing on current issues, such as sustainability and inclusivity, exploring recent trends like digital transformation and personalization, and considering future directions such as AI innovation and globalization, students can develop meaningful and impactful thesis projects. These topics not only reflect the challenges and opportunities of today but also anticipate the trends that will shape the future of creativity. Through their research, students can contribute to the ongoing dialogue that drives progress in art, design, and fashion, making their mark on the industries they are passionate about.

How to Choose a Dissertation Topic | 8 Steps to Follow

Published on November 11, 2022 by Shona McCombes and Tegan George. Revised on November 20, 2023.

Choosing your dissertation topic is the first step in making sure your research goes as smoothly as possible. When choosing a topic, it’s important to consider:

  • Your institution and department’s requirements
  • Your areas of knowledge and interest
  • The scientific, social, or practical relevance
  • The availability of data and resources
  • The timeframe of your dissertation
  • The relevance of your topic

You can follow these steps to begin narrowing down your ideas.

Table of contents

Step 1: check the requirements, step 2: choose a broad field of research, step 3: look for books and articles, step 4: find a niche, step 5: consider the type of research, step 6: determine the relevance, step 7: make sure it’s plausible, step 8: get your topic approved, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about dissertation topics.

The very first step is to check your program’s requirements. This determines the scope of what it is possible for you to research.

  • Is there a minimum and maximum word count?
  • When is the deadline?
  • Should the research have an academic or a professional orientation?
  • Are there any methodological conditions? Do you have to conduct fieldwork, or use specific types of sources?

Some programs have stricter requirements than others. You might be given nothing more than a word count and a deadline, or you might have a restricted list of topics and approaches to choose from. If in doubt about what is expected of you, always ask your supervisor or department coordinator.

Start by thinking about your areas of interest within the subject you’re studying. Examples of broad ideas include:

  • Twentieth-century literature
  • Economic history
  • Health policy

To get a more specific sense of the current state of research on your potential topic, skim through a few recent issues of the top journals in your field. Be sure to check out their most-cited articles in particular. For inspiration, you can also search Google Scholar , subject-specific databases , and your university library’s resources.

As you read, note down any specific ideas that interest you and make a shortlist of possible topics. If you’ve written other papers, such as a 3rd-year paper or a conference paper, consider how those topics can be broadened into a dissertation.

After doing some initial reading, it’s time to start narrowing down options for your potential topic. This can be a gradual process, and should get more and more specific as you go. For example, from the ideas above, you might narrow it down like this:

  • Twentieth-century literature   Twentieth-century Irish literature   Post-war Irish poetry
  • Economic history   European economic history   German labor union history
  • Health policy   Reproductive health policy   Reproductive rights in South America

All of these topics are still broad enough that you’ll find a huge amount of books and articles about them. Try to find a specific niche where you can make your mark, such as: something not many people have researched yet, a question that’s still being debated, or a very current practical issue.

At this stage, make sure you have a few backup ideas — there’s still time to change your focus. If your topic doesn’t make it through the next few steps, you can try a different one. Later, you will narrow your focus down even more in your problem statement and research questions .

There are many different types of research , so at this stage, it’s a good idea to start thinking about what kind of approach you’ll take to your topic. Will you mainly focus on:

  • Collecting original data (e.g., experimental or field research)?
  • Analyzing existing data (e.g., national statistics, public records, or archives)?
  • Interpreting cultural objects (e.g., novels, films, or paintings)?
  • Comparing scholarly approaches (e.g., theories, methods, or interpretations)?

Many dissertations will combine more than one of these. Sometimes the type of research is obvious: if your topic is post-war Irish poetry, you will probably mainly be interpreting poems. But in other cases, there are several possible approaches. If your topic is reproductive rights in South America, you could analyze public policy documents and media coverage, or you could gather original data through interviews and surveys .

You don’t have to finalize your research design and methods yet, but the type of research will influence which aspects of the topic it’s possible to address, so it’s wise to consider this as you narrow down your ideas.

It’s important that your topic is interesting to you, but you’ll also have to make sure it’s academically, socially or practically relevant to your field.

  • Academic relevance means that the research can fill a gap in knowledge or contribute to a scholarly debate in your field.
  • Social relevance means that the research can advance our understanding of society and inform social change.
  • Practical relevance means that the research can be applied to solve concrete problems or improve real-life processes.

The easiest way to make sure your research is relevant is to choose a topic that is clearly connected to current issues or debates, either in society at large or in your academic discipline. The relevance must be clearly stated when you define your research problem .

Before you make a final decision on your topic, consider again the length of your dissertation, the timeframe in which you have to complete it, and the practicalities of conducting the research.

Will you have enough time to read all the most important academic literature on this topic? If there’s too much information to tackle, consider narrowing your focus even more.

Will you be able to find enough sources or gather enough data to fulfil the requirements of the dissertation? If you think you might struggle to find information, consider broadening or shifting your focus.

Do you have to go to a specific location to gather data on the topic? Make sure that you have enough funding and practical access.

Last but not least, will the topic hold your interest for the length of the research process? To stay motivated, it’s important to choose something you’re enthusiastic about!

Most programmes will require you to submit a brief description of your topic, called a research prospectus or proposal .

Remember, if you discover that your topic is not as strong as you thought it was, it’s usually acceptable to change your mind and switch focus early in the dissertation process. Just make sure you have enough time to start on a new topic, and always check with your supervisor or department.

Formulating a main research question can be a difficult task. Overall, your question should contribute to solving the problem that you have defined in your problem statement .

However, it should also fulfill criteria in three main areas:

  • Researchability
  • Feasibility and specificity
  • Relevance and originality

All research questions should be:

  • Focused on a single problem or issue
  • Researchable using primary and/or secondary sources
  • Feasible to answer within the timeframe and practical constraints
  • Specific enough to answer thoroughly
  • Complex enough to develop the answer over the space of a paper or thesis
  • Relevant to your field of study and/or society more broadly

Writing Strong Research Questions

You can assess information and arguments critically by asking certain questions about the source. You can use the CRAAP test , focusing on the currency , relevance , authority , accuracy , and purpose of a source of information.

Ask questions such as:

  • Who is the author? Are they an expert?
  • Why did the author publish it? What is their motivation?
  • How do they make their argument? Is it backed up by evidence?

A dissertation prospectus or proposal describes what or who you plan to research for your dissertation. It delves into why, when, where, and how you will do your research, as well as helps you choose a type of research to pursue. You should also determine whether you plan to pursue qualitative or quantitative methods and what your research design will look like.

It should outline all of the decisions you have taken about your project, from your dissertation topic to your hypotheses and research objectives , ready to be approved by your supervisor or committee.

Note that some departments require a defense component, where you present your prospectus to your committee orally.

The best way to remember the difference between a research plan and a research proposal is that they have fundamentally different audiences. A research plan helps you, the researcher, organize your thoughts. On the other hand, a dissertation proposal or research proposal aims to convince others (e.g., a supervisor, a funding body, or a dissertation committee) that your research topic is relevant and worthy of being conducted.
