Company analysis is the important type of case method in Research Methodology and is commonly used by the beginners of scholarly research. A case study based management research and teaching pedagogy are adopted by many business schools with the belief that it is a most powerful way to study and learn new lessons required to identify, understand, and solve the problems in the process of managing and leading the organizations. Developing a business case on various managing aspects of a company and analysing case forces students to grapple with exactly the kinds of situations, decisions, and dilemmas managers confront every day. Company analysis is a powerful tool in developing both research case study and teaching case study in business management subject. Compared to industry analysis, company analysis gives focused and deeper insight into a company and its business in terms of challenges and opportunities. In this paper, we have discussed the procedure of writing company focussed case study based on a newly developed company analysis framework. We also recommend the Company analysis as a class of case study methodology in management research for the beginners and budding researchers as a beginning step in scholarly research.

Many business schools have adopted case method in management research and in teaching pedagogy with the belief that it is a most powerful way to study and learn new lessons required to identify, understand, and solve the problems in the process of managing and leading the organizations. Analysing business cases of companies force students to grapple with exactly the kinds of situations, decisions, and dilemmas managers confront every day. A good business case will include the problem, identify all the possible options to solve the problem, and provides adequate information along with uncertainties to the decision-makers to choose which course of action will be best for the organisation. Case analysis is a participatory method in which the students play a lead role in their own and each other's learning. The instructors moderate the discussions ask questions, monitors the dialogue, supports debate, and records the frameworks used for analysing situations, concepts, models, strategies used in the problem of the system/organization to engage students in a decision-making process of a challenging, interactive learning environment. Both types of cases can be analysed in a classroom setup provided the instructor finds them as appropriate for the topic and subject under discussion. Company analysis is a powerful tool in developing both research case study and teaching case study in business management subject. In this paper, we have discussed the case studies based on company analysis, case studies published by top publishers on company analysis, difference between research case study and teaching case study, company analysis as a methodology in management research, an effective method of developing research case studies based on company analysis using a framework for research case study based on company analysis, and the possible recommendations based on analysis.

In 1999 the global non-profit sector had a turnover of over $1 trillion with 19 million fully paid employees. It was the equivalent of the eighth largest economy (Sustainability 2003). Despite this, it was poorly understood. In 2008 Lambell, Ramia, Nyland and Michelotti concluded that non-governmental organisations (NGO) are still relatively absent from the mainstream scholarly management and broader business studies literature. On the other hand, business models and business model canvas is a subject that has been discussed and much researched since the publication of Osterwalder’s dissertation in 2004. The importance of the NGO sector and a desire to better understand their business models was the inspiration for this research - the creation of a tool useful for NGOs, academics and practitioners. Hence, the main objective is the development of a specialized business model canvas for NGOs. The central research question of this study is defined as ‘how is a NGO business model canvas structured?’ A business model canvas for NGOs was conceptualised utilising Osterwalder and Pigneur’s (2010) third party funded model as the foundation. The building blocks and definitions were initially based on literature review sources (business, social business and NGO management literature). Following interview responses and analysis of annual reports of NGOs both the building blocks and definitions were adapted to align better to NGO terminology. These are presented below. This conceptual business model canvas for NGOs was tested through interviews with four NGO experts and leaders of two Foundations and five International NGOs (INGO) using the case study method. This testing led to the development of two separate business model canvases. The canvas for Foundations is a slight adaption from Osterwalder and Pigneur’s third party funding business model (2010). The other canvas is applicable for INGOs with multiple streams of income. This is made up of two sections, one for programmatic and the other for fundraising/ marketing and financing activities. This division is the result of a desire to maintain clarity and hence the usability of the business model canvas as a tool for communications, visualization of business models and analysis. The interviewees confirmed the practical relevance and utility of the business model canvas. In addition, it has academic relevance due to the business model canvas’s specific usage for NGOs. This provides a basis for further research, such as, comparative analysis and historical analysis of NGO business models and so forth.
