How to Write a 700-Word Essay

Basic composition is necessary to a complete education. Entering college composition courses requires proficiency in the basic essay format. Even careers down the road long after college may require a report in the basic essay format. Writing a 700-word essay is best learned step-by-step, as it will help you formulate the rule set of basic composition into your head.

Formulate a succinct thesis to base your essay on. The thesis is the core ideas which you will discuss throughout your essay and use to form a rational conclusion.

Create a basic outline dividing the essay into five paragraphs, each paragraph marked by a roman numeral. Title the paragraph according to the broad subject matter discussed, and mark individual points to discuss within the paragraph by letters in alphabetical order.

Write the introductory paragraph and incorporate your essay’s thesis. Ensure that this paragraph is around 125 words.

Write the body paragraphs according to your outline. Make sure to discuss each point as necessary to your thesis. Each paragraph should be about 150 words.

Finish your essay with a conclusion paragraph that restates the thesis. The conclusion should be around 125 words.

Your Ultimate Guide To Writing A 700-Word Essay In 2023

700 word essay

Table of Contents

In schools and colleges, writing is at the heart of learning. After delivering a lecture and teaching a new thing to students, teachers expect students to be able to reproduce that in any form in writing. That’s why they assign tasks related to the topic and students need to produce unique solutions to the question.

Essay writing, on the other hand, is a deliberate act where students attempt to answer a question. Even when there is no direct question in the title, an essay is always about answering a question or resolving an issue, with what they believe to be true.

In this blog post, we will take a look at the art of essay writing , the types of essays that are popular in schools and colleges, and how to write a 700-word essay.

Art of Essay Writing

Many students make the mistake of thinking that essay writing is about sitting down at a table and churning out a piece of writing with distinct sections and focus. That’s not true! Essay writing is a process where a writer produces a discourse on a specific topic to help readers understand the underlying mechanics and dynamics of the topic. An essay has three major sections – opening, main body, and closing. Each one serves a specific purpose, with its division of paragraphs and words.

It is at the heart of all the grander versions of writing because it is at the foundation of both fiction and non-fiction works. Writers who turn out to be the best in business start by practicing and mastering the art of essay writing. That’s why students should spend time and other resources to learn the craft and apply the science behind it to other writing endeavors.

Types of Essays For Schools & Colleges

There is no single type of essay that fit all the needs of the writers and the readers. Based on the subject and focus on the contents, countless types of essays are written by both school and college students. But certain essays are popular in academic institutions for their apparent benefits to aspiring writers.

In this section, we will take a look at four of those and ensure that students understand them well and attempt to write great ones.

Narrative Essays

A narrative essay is a subjective discourse surrounding a personal incident, experience, or event. That subject or stimulus of the change is influential enough to alter the further course of events for the writer. It is emotional and charged with flowery prose so that readers can be moved or inspired by it. The structure of a narrative essay is the same as that of any other standard essay.

Descriptive Essays

A descriptive essay describes a subject under consideration in either objective or subjective terms. The subject of a descriptive essay can be a person, an object, a place, or an event. Writers employ both figurative language and sensory details to bridge the distances of space and time to draw a picture of the subject for readers. This type of essay, combined with narrative essays, is the easiest one.

Personal Response Essays

A personal response essay covers a writer’s opinions or views regarding a subject. That subject can be a book, a movie, an event, or something significant, for both the writers and the readers. Personal response essays are also required in college admission tests where committees ask for aspirants’ views on certain things. It is shorter in format and structure compared to other standard essays.

Reflection Essays

Reflection essays, as the name suggests, are personal views and opinions of writers regarding a subject. In this case, the subject can be as trivial as a college course, a seminar, or a laboratory session. Whatever that is, it can be molded into something more practical and relatable. Reflection essays are usually covered in colleges and higher education levels because of their complexity.

Writing A 700-Word Essay

Now that we have identified some of the most common types of essays in schools and colleges, it is time to cover the premise of the blog. A 700-word essay is no different from a 500-word essay or a 1500-word essay. However, the obvious difference comes from the word count and length of the text.

This section is dedicated to helping you with a process that you can reproduce every time you need to write a 700-word essay.

Collecting Information

This is the most important part of the process that many students miss out on. Even when you have a solid command of a subject, there are chances that you do not have the latest information on recent development. Also, we tend to forget numbers and statistics quickly which can enrich our texts. Also, you can determine the level and scope of your essay by going through the research phase.

Creating An Outline

Outlining is considered to be the death of creativity by many writers. In truth, it is far from it. Outlining provides discipline and direction to the text before the real writing begins. This prevents bottlenecks and delays where writers could have to scramble to progress. The best way to create an outline of the essay is by doing it with research so that you can cover two pre-writing tasks in one go.

Writing The First Draft

This is the real milestone that writers need to cover before they can even think about having a 700-word essay on their hands. After researching and outlining, it is best to get to the task without needlessly delaying it. This will save them from writer’s block and ensure that they have a finished manuscript as soon as possible. Compared to the editing and proofreading phase, this should be dealt with quickly.

Editing & Proofreading

Again, many novice writers and students in schools and colleges take this step lightly. They believe that if they write the first draft carefully, they would not have to go through this phase. This is a false notion as no matter how meticulous they are with the first draft, they will not be able to produce a flawless piece of text. Editing and proofreading are at the center of exceptional writing and there is no way around it.

Practical Tips For Completing A 700-Word Essay

We hope that students will be able to produce a unique and original piece of work based on our simple guide. Still, many ask for tips and hacks to quickly get started and finish the task. In this light, we have dedicated this section to cover some tips. This should be employed in conjunction with the best practices of writing and editing essays.

Connecting The Dots

When it comes to the process of finding relevant information to prove a point, writers need to provide a complete picture to the readers. They can either provide all the clues to the issue or they can cover the basics and let the readers do the connecting themselves. So, whatever way a writer wants to progress, it has to be consistent.

Writing Clearly & Precisely

There is no beating around the bush when you have to write a 700-word essay on a focused topic. Instead of using mouthful words with little to no practical value to the text, writers should gun for clear and precise vocabulary and vernacular. In that, students should write in small and clear sentences with variations across the text.

Getting Peer Reviews

The work of a writer is not done when he finishes writing a text. It is when the text is flawless. Even some argue that a piece of writing should be the best version of itself. In that light, writers should get peer reviews to ensure that there are no obvious and implied errors and inconsistencies in the essay.

Which essays can be covered in a 700-word slot?

The essays that can be covered in a 700-word slot are as follows:

  • Narrative essays
  • Personal response essays
  • Reflection essays
  • Descriptive essays

Is it necessary to research before writing a 700-word essay?

Of course! Research is always at the heart of writing a solid essay. We cannot store empirical evidence for academic topics in our heads. That’s why we need to go through both primary and secondary sources of information before outlining and writing the essay.

What is the ideal word count range for a 700-word essay?

There is no way you can exactly finalize a 700-word essay on this word count mark. There is always an acceptable range in academia because then it would not be too long or short. We can say from experience that 650 to 750 words are the acceptable range for a 700-word essay.

How much time does it take to write a 700-word essay?

If you are a good typist with reasonable command over your keyboard, you can type 700 words in under an hour. If we assume that you need around an hour to research and outline the essay, we can say that a 700-word essay takes around two hours to finish.

Can I write a 700-word essay in a day or an hour?

A day is enough to collect relevant information and write a 700-word essay. On the other hand, if you have only one hour to finish the essay, you need to cover a lot of ground in that slot. These include researching, writing, and editing a 700-word essay.

How can I secure the best marks in my 700-word essay?

Following are some of the best practices that can help you cover all the ground:

  • Research before writing
  • Outlining from start to finish
  • Writing the first draft quickly
  • Proofreading and editing
  • Getting peer reviews before submission

Summing Up The Discussion

A 700-word essay comes in the middle when we talk about both short and long essays. In this blog, we have covered both basic grounds and highlighted the best practices to ensure that everything is right on the mark. From the definition of essay writing to dividing the process into simple steps, students can find gems of the practice of writing a 700-word essay in this resource.

Those who are not willing to cover the task themselves can get a submission-ready essay from Write My Essay. All you need to do is place the order with all the necessary details.

College Essays

computer-1185626_640.jpg

Figuring out your college essay can be one of the most difficult parts of applying to college. Even once you've read the prompt and picked a topic, you might wonder: if you write too much or too little, will you blow your chance of admission? How long should a college essay be?

Whether you're a terse writer or a loquacious one, we can advise you on college essay length. In this guide, we'll cover what the standard college essay length is, how much word limits matter, and what to do if you aren't sure how long a specific essay should be.

How Long Is a College Essay? First, Check the Word Limit

You might be used to turning in your writing assignments on a page-limit basis (for example, a 10-page paper). While some colleges provide page limits for their college essays, most use a word limit instead. This makes sure there's a standard length for all the essays that a college receives, regardless of formatting or font.

In the simplest terms, your college essay should be pretty close to, but not exceeding, the word limit in length. Think within 50 words as the lower bound, with the word limit as the upper bound. So for a 500-word limit essay, try to get somewhere between 450-500 words. If they give you a range, stay within that range.

College essay prompts usually provide the word limit right in the prompt or in the instructions.

For example, the University of Illinois says :

"You'll answer two to three prompts as part of your application. The questions you'll answer will depend on whether you're applying to a major or to our undeclared program , and if you've selected a second choice . Each response should be approximately 150 words."

As exemplified by the University of Illinois, the shortest word limits for college essays are usually around 150 words (less than half a single-spaced page). Rarely will you see a word limit higher than around 650 words (over one single-spaced page). College essays are usually pretty short: between 150 and 650 words. Admissions officers have to read a lot of them, after all!

body-scale-cc0

Weigh your words carefully, because they are limited!

How Flexible Is the Word Limit?

But how flexible is the word limit? What if your poignant anecdote is just 10 words too long—or 100 too short?

Can I Go Over the Word Limit?

If you are attaching a document and you need one or two extra words, you can probably get away with exceeding the word limit by such a small amount. Some colleges will actually tell you that exceeding the word limit by 1-2 words is fine. However, I advise against exceeding the word limit unless it's explicitly allowed for a few reasons:

First, you might not be able to. If you have to copy-paste it into a text box, your essay might get cut off and you'll have to trim it down anyway.

If you exceed the word limit in a noticeable way, the admissions counselor may just stop reading your essay past that point. This is not good for you.

Following directions is actually a very important part of the college application process. You need to follow directions to get your letters of recommendation, upload your essays, send supplemental materials, get your test scores sent, and so on and so forth. So it's just a good general rule to follow whatever instructions you've been given by the institution. Better safe than sorry!

Can I Go Under the Word Limit?

If you can truly get your point across well beneath the word limit, it's probably fine. Brevity is not necessarily a bad thing in writing just so long as you are clear, cogent, and communicate what you want to.

However, most college essays have pretty tight word limits anyways. So if you're writing 300 words for an essay with a 500-word limit, ask yourself: is there anything more you could say to elaborate on or support your points? Consult with a parent, friend, or teacher on where you could elaborate with more detail or expand your points.

Also, if the college gives you a word range, you absolutely need to at least hit the bottom end of the range. So if you get a range from the institution, like 400-500 words, you need to write at least 400 words. If you write less, it will come across like you have nothing to say, which is not an impression you want to give.

body-writing-computer-orange-write

What If There Is No Word Limit?

Some colleges don't give you a word limit for one or more of your essay prompts. This can be a little stressful, but the prompts generally fall into a few categories:

Writing Sample

Some colleges don't provide a hard-and-fast word limit because they want a writing sample from one of your classes. In this case, a word limit would be very limiting to you in terms of which assignments you could select from.

For an example of this kind of prompt, check out essay Option B at Amherst :

"Submit a graded paper from your junior or senior year that best represents your writing skills and analytical abilities. We are particularly interested in your ability to construct a tightly reasoned, persuasive argument that calls upon literary, sociological or historical evidence. You should NOT submit a laboratory report, journal entry, creative writing sample or in-class essay."

While there is usually no word limit per se, colleges sometimes provide a general page guideline for writing samples. In the FAQ for Option B , Amherst clarifies, "There is no hard-and-fast rule for official page limit. Typically, we anticipate a paper of 4-5 pages will provide adequate length to demonstrate your analytical abilities. Somewhat longer papers can also be submitted, but in most cases should not exceed 8-10 pages."

So even though there's no word limit, they'd like somewhere in the 4-10 pages range. High school students are not usually writing papers that are longer than 10 pages anyways, so that isn't very limiting.

Implicit Length Guideline

Sometimes, while there's no word (or even page) limit, there's still an implicit length guideline. What do I mean by this?

See, for example, this Western Washington University prompt :

“Describe one or more activities you have been involved in that have been particularly meaningful. What does your involvement say about the communities, identities or causes that are important to you?”

While there’s no page or word limit listed here, further down on page the ‘essay tips’ section explains that “ most essay responses are about 500 words, ” though “this is only a recommendation, not a firm limit.” This gives you an idea of what’s reasonable. A little longer or shorter than 500 words would be appropriate here. That’s what I mean by an “implicit” word limit—there is a reasonable length you could go to within the boundaries of the prompt.

body-coffee-cc0

But what's the proper coffee-to-paragraph ratio?

Treasure Hunt

There is also the classic "treasure hunt" prompt. No, it's not a prompt about a treasure hunt. It's a prompt where there are no length guidelines given, but if you hunt around on the rest of the website you can find length guidelines.

For example, the University of Chicago provides seven "Extended Essay" prompts . You must write an essay in response to one prompt of your choosing, but nowhere on the page is there any guidance about word count or page limit.

However, many colleges provide additional details about their expectations for application materials, including essays, on FAQ pages, which is true of the University of Chicago. On the school’s admissions Frequently Asked Questions page , they provide the following length guidelines for the supplemental essays:

“We suggest that you note any word limits for Coalition or Common Application essays; however, there are no strict word limits on the UChicago Supplement essays. For the extended essay (where you choose one of several prompts), we suggest that you aim for around 650 words. While we won't, as a rule, stop reading after 650 words, we're only human and cannot promise that an overly wordy essay will hold our attention indefinitely. For the “Why UChicago?” essay, we suggest about 250-500 words. The ideas in your writing matter more than the exact number of words you use!”

So there you go! You want to be (loosely) in the realm of 650 for the extended essay, and 250-500 words for the “Why UChicago?” essay.

Help! There Really Is No Guidance on Length

If you really can't find any length guidelines anywhere on the admissions website and you're at a loss, I advise calling the admissions office. They may not be able to give you an exact number (in fact, they probably won't), but they will probably at least be able to tell you how long most of the essays they see are. (And keep you from writing a panicked, 20-page dissertation about your relationship with your dog).

In general, 500 words or so is pretty safe for a college essay. It's a fairly standard word limit length, in fact. (And if you're wondering, that's about a page and a half double-spaced.) 500 words is long enough to develop a basic idea while still getting a point across quickly—important when admissions counselors have thousands of essays to read!

guy-with-magnifying-glass

"See? It says 500 words right there in tiny font!"

The Final Word: How Long Should a College Essay Be?

The best college essay length is usually pretty straightforward: you want to be right under or at the provided word limit. If you go substantially past the word limit, you risk having your essay cut off by an online application form or having the admissions officer just not finish it. And if you're too far under the word limit, you may not be elaborating enough.

What if there is no word limit? Then how long should a college essay be? In general, around 500 words is a pretty safe approximate word amount for a college essay—it's one of the most common word limits, after all!

Here's guidance for special cases and hunting down word limits:

If it's a writing sample of your graded academic work, the length either doesn't matter or there should be some loose page guidelines.

There also may be implicit length guidelines. For example, if a prompt says to write three paragraphs, you'll know that writing six sentences is definitely too short, and two single-spaced pages is definitely too long.

You might not be able to find length guidelines in the prompt, but you could still hunt them up elsewhere on the website. Try checking FAQs or googling your chosen school name with "admissions essay word limit."

If there really is no word limit, you can call the school to try to get some guidance.

With this advice, you can be sure you've got the right college essay length on lockdown!

Word Counter Blog

How Many Paragraphs in an Essay?

How many paragraphs in an essay?

As a rule, you’ll write your essay in three main parts. First, you’ll introduce your topic to your reader. Next, you will have body text in which you discuss the topic in more detail, and finally, you’ll have a conclusion that tells your reader what you were able to see after looking into the facts or thinking through the topic.

In its simplest form, an essay can consist of three paragraphs with one paragraph being devoted to each section. Proponents of the five paragraph essay say that the body text should consist of three paragraphs, but in reality, it’s fine to write more or fewer paragraphs in this section.

Guessing How Many Paragraphs Before You Begin

This is a rule of thumb, which means it won’t always work quite that way, but it’s handy all the same. In academic work, your paragraphs are likely to be a bit longer than most of the ones you see in this blog post. On average, there are usually 100 to 200 words in a paragraph . So if you’d like a guesstimate, you can assume that a 1,000-word essay will have between five and ten paragraphs.

What Points Do You Have to Cover?

Another, less limiting and more accurate way to work out how many paragraphs you need to cover your topic is to look at the main points you have to cover in the body text. A paragraph contains all the ideas that support or explain a single concept.

When you are planning your essay, you will think of or research the main elements that are needed in the body text. It would be safe to assume you need at least one paragraph for each of these. Of course, if there is a lot of information to cover in order to explore each area, you may need more.

For example, if you are writing an essay on childhood development and exposure to technology, you will want to look into the physical, psychological and cognitive developmental effects of tech on kids. When you research this topic, you will find that there are contrasting points of view and researchers have identified several physical, developmental, and psychological effects of technology use in children.

Assuming five psychological effects have been identified, you can assume you’ll need to write five paragraphs if you are going to write a relatively in-depth essay. But if both those who say technology is bad for kids and those who say it can be good have done a great deal of work on the sub-topic, you might want to make that ten paragraphs so that you can cover both sides of the argument and look into how earlier authors reached their conclusions.

Of course, if you have been set a relatively short word limit , you may not be able to go in-depth at all, in which case a paragraph for each of the main sub-topics (psychology, physical development, and cognitive development) will likely be adequate.

Essay Content Is More Important Than the Number of Paragraphs

Ultimately, your essay will be evaluated on the information you present, not on the number of paragraphs in the essay. Early in your academic life, teachers and lecturers may give you both a structure for your essay and a guideline on how long each part of the essay should be. I have seen essay instructions say how many marks are allocated for each section, and my trick is to take the total word count and allocate a percentage of words to each section based on the percentage of marks you can get for it. After all, if the teacher is allocating 80 marks for content in total and you can see 50% of the mark relates to a certain part of the essay, then 50% of your essay’s words should be devoted to that section.

Sometimes, you’ll just be given a topic and told to air your opinion. This gives you more freedom, but it’s a tad more difficult. The research will show you how many angles you should look at, and it’ll help you to find information that both supports and contradicts your point of view. To make a strong argument, you need to look at both supporting and contradictory information.

To avoid getting tangled up in one aspect of the discussion, you’ll have to decide how long it should be. If it’s the most important aspect informing your conclusion, you can spend a little more time (and words) on that particular point. It could run into several paragraphs rather than just one or two.

Always Remember the Purpose of Paragraphs

Paragraphs structure information into sub-topics, and they make your work easier to read and understand thanks to the structure they provide. With careful advance planning, you’ll be able to work out more or less how many paragraphs you need to complete your essay.

How many paragraphs is…

For those looking for a general rule-of-thumb, below are some estimates on the number of paragraphs there would be in an essay of different lengths based on an average length of 150 words per paragraph. Of course, the number of paragraphs for your essay will depend on many different factors. You can use the following information for a general reference, but don’t take these numbers as literal. .

Basic Essay Word to Paragraphs Conversions

  • A 100 word essay is 3 paragraph. (minimum for an essay)
  • A 200 word essay is 3 paragraphs. (minimum for an essay)
  • A 250 word essay is 3 paragraphs. (minimum for an essay)
  • A 300 word essay is 3 paragraphs. (minimum for an essay)
  • A 400 word essay is 3 paragraphs. (minimum for an essay)
  • A 500 word essay is 3 to 4 paragraphs.
  • A 600 word essay is 4 paragraphs.
  • A 700 word essay is 4 to 5 paragraphs.
  • A 750 word essay is 5 paragraphs.
  • A 800 word essay is 5 to 6 paragraphs.
  • A 900 word essay is 6 paragraphs.
  • A 1,000 word essay is 6 to 7 paragraphs.
  • A 1,250 word essay is 8 to 9 paragraphs.
  • A 1,500 word essay is 10 paragraphs.
  • A 1,750 word essay is 11 to 12 paragraphs.
  • A 2,000 word essay is 13 to 14 paragraphs.
  • A 2,500 word essay is 16 to 17 paragraphs.
  • A 3,000 word essay is 20 paragraphs.
  • A 4,000 word essay is 26 to 27 paragraphs.
  • A 5,000 word essay is 33 to 34 paragraphs.
  • A 6,000 word essay is 40 paragraphs.
  • A 7,000 word essay is 46 to 37 paragraphs.
  • A 7,500 word essay is 50 paragraphs.
  • A 8,000 word essay is 53 to 54 paragraphs.
  • A 9,000 word essay is 60 paragraphs.
  • A 10,000 word essay is 66 to 67 paragraphs.

I don’t understand, How can a 100, 200, 300 and 400 word essay all have 3 paragraphs if a paragraph is 100 to 200 words long? A 100 word essay should be 1 paragraph or 1/2 a paragraph, not 3 paragraphs. Can someone explain this too me?

A sentence is an idea. A paragraph is a group of ideas that relate to one another. That’s the most important point. The second most important one is remembering that your text consists of introduction, body, conclusion with at LEAST one paragraph for each. While teachers like 100 to 200 word paragraphs, you can’t always apply that. Call it a guideline rather than a rule!

the general rule is that 3 paragraphs are minimum for an essay. So, no matter how short your essay is, you should still need 3 paragraphs. If you are really for some reason writing a 100 word essay, then you should have one short sentence for both your introduction and conclusion.

I was always taught an essay has five paragraphs by my teachers. Did they lie to me? If an essay only needs three paragraphs, why would my teachers tell me that they should have five?

I think the five paragraphs for an essay is more of a rule-of-thumb number that is easy to teach students when they are first learning to write. Your teacher was just trying to make sure you understood how to write, not give you a rule you had to always obey.

I think five paragraphs is a good number to shoot for when writing, but it isn’t a hard-fast rule you need to hit every time. Each essay is different and require more or less paragraphs depending on the information you need to provide in the writing.

yes and no.. i would say a good on as 4 paragraph. Intro, 2 body P, and a conclusion.

My teachers always taught by eight paragraph essays, but five-paragraph essays normally lie precedent to the more advanced or larger essays.

I was taught essays should be 7 paragraphs long, not 5. My teacher said 3 central paragraphs never gives enough detail to the topic, so we should write 5. It makes sense to me and that is how I’ve always done it.

What you’re taught is often a general rule to shoot for, not a rule set in concrete. That’s the case with this. Your teacher felt that 7 paragraphs was a good number for the essays you wrote for her, but it doesn’t always have to be that way. it’s a general rule, not a concrete one.

How many sentences if we don’t know how many sentences we need to write?

The average paragraph contains 5-6 sentences. If you’re feeling a little extra, paragraphs can be 7-10 sentences.

It also depends on whether or not you are bringing outside information into the paragraph as well. Using quotes makes a paragraph longer than not doing so.

I think the length of a paper depends mainly on the instructions given by the instructor. Secondly, I would decide a paper length on the basis of the grading rubric.

I already knew an essay has three paragraphs

Inilividual project: follow all steps and develop a paragraph of your choice and write all expository essay with not less than 500 words of the povoloped paragraph?

On average for a five-paragraph essay, I write around 1,000-1300 words. For an eight paragraph essay, I write around 2,000-2,600 words on the document. Keep in mind your quotes too, you should have one quote per paragraph (expected) or two (recommended). It really is up to the person though, I have a buddy who writes considerably less than I do, but is able to get his point across. It is really up to the person.

Student A: Sir, do we have to write a long essay?

How will I determine my word count for 1300 to 1500 maximum words in the academic writing?

essay of 700 words

To be truly brilliant, an essay needs to utilise the right language. You could make a great point, but if it’s not intelligently articulated, you almost needn’t have bothered.

Developing the language skills to build an argument and to write persuasively is crucial if you’re to write outstanding essays every time. In this article, we’re going to equip you with the words and phrases you need to write a top-notch essay, along with examples of how to utilise them.

It’s by no means an exhaustive list, and there will often be other ways of using the words and phrases we describe that we won’t have room to include, but there should be more than enough below to help you make an instant improvement to your essay-writing skills.

If you’re interested in developing your language and persuasive skills, Oxford Royale offers summer courses at its Oxford Summer School , Cambridge Summer School , London Summer School , San Francisco Summer School and Yale Summer School . General explaining

Let’s start by looking at language for general explanations of complex points.

1. In order to

Usage: “In order to” can be used to introduce an explanation for the purpose of an argument. Example: “In order to understand X, we need first to understand Y.”

2. In other words

Usage: Use “in other words” when you want to express something in a different way (more simply), to make it easier to understand, or to emphasise or expand on a point. Example: “Frogs are amphibians. In other words, they live on the land and in the water.”

3. To put it another way

Usage: This phrase is another way of saying “in other words”, and can be used in particularly complex points, when you feel that an alternative way of wording a problem may help the reader achieve a better understanding of its significance. Example: “Plants rely on photosynthesis. To put it another way, they will die without the sun.”

4. That is to say

Usage: “That is” and “that is to say” can be used to add further detail to your explanation, or to be more precise. Example: “Whales are mammals. That is to say, they must breathe air.”

5. To that end

Usage: Use “to that end” or “to this end” in a similar way to “in order to” or “so”. Example: “Zoologists have long sought to understand how animals communicate with each other. To that end, a new study has been launched that looks at elephant sounds and their possible meanings.”

Adding additional information to support a point

Students often make the mistake of using synonyms of “and” each time they want to add further information in support of a point they’re making, or to build an argument . Here are some cleverer ways of doing this.

6. Moreover

Usage: Employ “moreover” at the start of a sentence to add extra information in support of a point you’re making. Example: “Moreover, the results of a recent piece of research provide compelling evidence in support of…”

7. Furthermore

Usage:This is also generally used at the start of a sentence, to add extra information. Example: “Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that…”

8. What’s more

Usage: This is used in the same way as “moreover” and “furthermore”. Example: “What’s more, this isn’t the only evidence that supports this hypothesis.”

9. Likewise

Usage: Use “likewise” when you want to talk about something that agrees with what you’ve just mentioned. Example: “Scholar A believes X. Likewise, Scholar B argues compellingly in favour of this point of view.”

10. Similarly

Usage: Use “similarly” in the same way as “likewise”. Example: “Audiences at the time reacted with shock to Beethoven’s new work, because it was very different to what they were used to. Similarly, we have a tendency to react with surprise to the unfamiliar.”

11. Another key thing to remember

Usage: Use the phrase “another key point to remember” or “another key fact to remember” to introduce additional facts without using the word “also”. Example: “As a Romantic, Blake was a proponent of a closer relationship between humans and nature. Another key point to remember is that Blake was writing during the Industrial Revolution, which had a major impact on the world around him.”

12. As well as

Usage: Use “as well as” instead of “also” or “and”. Example: “Scholar A argued that this was due to X, as well as Y.”

13. Not only… but also

Usage: This wording is used to add an extra piece of information, often something that’s in some way more surprising or unexpected than the first piece of information. Example: “Not only did Edmund Hillary have the honour of being the first to reach the summit of Everest, but he was also appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.”

14. Coupled with

Usage: Used when considering two or more arguments at a time. Example: “Coupled with the literary evidence, the statistics paint a compelling view of…”

15. Firstly, secondly, thirdly…

Usage: This can be used to structure an argument, presenting facts clearly one after the other. Example: “There are many points in support of this view. Firstly, X. Secondly, Y. And thirdly, Z.

16. Not to mention/to say nothing of

Usage: “Not to mention” and “to say nothing of” can be used to add extra information with a bit of emphasis. Example: “The war caused unprecedented suffering to millions of people, not to mention its impact on the country’s economy.”

Words and phrases for demonstrating contrast

When you’re developing an argument, you will often need to present contrasting or opposing opinions or evidence – “it could show this, but it could also show this”, or “X says this, but Y disagrees”. This section covers words you can use instead of the “but” in these examples, to make your writing sound more intelligent and interesting.

17. However

Usage: Use “however” to introduce a point that disagrees with what you’ve just said. Example: “Scholar A thinks this. However, Scholar B reached a different conclusion.”

18. On the other hand

Usage: Usage of this phrase includes introducing a contrasting interpretation of the same piece of evidence, a different piece of evidence that suggests something else, or an opposing opinion. Example: “The historical evidence appears to suggest a clear-cut situation. On the other hand, the archaeological evidence presents a somewhat less straightforward picture of what happened that day.”

19. Having said that

Usage: Used in a similar manner to “on the other hand” or “but”. Example: “The historians are unanimous in telling us X, an agreement that suggests that this version of events must be an accurate account. Having said that, the archaeology tells a different story.”

20. By contrast/in comparison

Usage: Use “by contrast” or “in comparison” when you’re comparing and contrasting pieces of evidence. Example: “Scholar A’s opinion, then, is based on insufficient evidence. By contrast, Scholar B’s opinion seems more plausible.”

21. Then again

Usage: Use this to cast doubt on an assertion. Example: “Writer A asserts that this was the reason for what happened. Then again, it’s possible that he was being paid to say this.”

22. That said

Usage: This is used in the same way as “then again”. Example: “The evidence ostensibly appears to point to this conclusion. That said, much of the evidence is unreliable at best.”

Usage: Use this when you want to introduce a contrasting idea. Example: “Much of scholarship has focused on this evidence. Yet not everyone agrees that this is the most important aspect of the situation.”

Adding a proviso or acknowledging reservations

Sometimes, you may need to acknowledge a shortfalling in a piece of evidence, or add a proviso. Here are some ways of doing so.

24. Despite this

Usage: Use “despite this” or “in spite of this” when you want to outline a point that stands regardless of a shortfalling in the evidence. Example: “The sample size was small, but the results were important despite this.”

25. With this in mind

Usage: Use this when you want your reader to consider a point in the knowledge of something else. Example: “We’ve seen that the methods used in the 19th century study did not always live up to the rigorous standards expected in scientific research today, which makes it difficult to draw definite conclusions. With this in mind, let’s look at a more recent study to see how the results compare.”

26. Provided that

Usage: This means “on condition that”. You can also say “providing that” or just “providing” to mean the same thing. Example: “We may use this as evidence to support our argument, provided that we bear in mind the limitations of the methods used to obtain it.”

27. In view of/in light of

Usage: These phrases are used when something has shed light on something else. Example: “In light of the evidence from the 2013 study, we have a better understanding of…”

28. Nonetheless

Usage: This is similar to “despite this”. Example: “The study had its limitations, but it was nonetheless groundbreaking for its day.”

29. Nevertheless

Usage: This is the same as “nonetheless”. Example: “The study was flawed, but it was important nevertheless.”

30. Notwithstanding

Usage: This is another way of saying “nonetheless”. Example: “Notwithstanding the limitations of the methodology used, it was an important study in the development of how we view the workings of the human mind.”

Giving examples

Good essays always back up points with examples, but it’s going to get boring if you use the expression “for example” every time. Here are a couple of other ways of saying the same thing.

31. For instance

Example: “Some birds migrate to avoid harsher winter climates. Swallows, for instance, leave the UK in early winter and fly south…”

32. To give an illustration

Example: “To give an illustration of what I mean, let’s look at the case of…”

Signifying importance

When you want to demonstrate that a point is particularly important, there are several ways of highlighting it as such.

33. Significantly

Usage: Used to introduce a point that is loaded with meaning that might not be immediately apparent. Example: “Significantly, Tacitus omits to tell us the kind of gossip prevalent in Suetonius’ accounts of the same period.”

34. Notably

Usage: This can be used to mean “significantly” (as above), and it can also be used interchangeably with “in particular” (the example below demonstrates the first of these ways of using it). Example: “Actual figures are notably absent from Scholar A’s analysis.”

35. Importantly

Usage: Use “importantly” interchangeably with “significantly”. Example: “Importantly, Scholar A was being employed by X when he wrote this work, and was presumably therefore under pressure to portray the situation more favourably than he perhaps might otherwise have done.”

Summarising

You’ve almost made it to the end of the essay, but your work isn’t over yet. You need to end by wrapping up everything you’ve talked about, showing that you’ve considered the arguments on both sides and reached the most likely conclusion. Here are some words and phrases to help you.

36. In conclusion

Usage: Typically used to introduce the concluding paragraph or sentence of an essay, summarising what you’ve discussed in a broad overview. Example: “In conclusion, the evidence points almost exclusively to Argument A.”

37. Above all

Usage: Used to signify what you believe to be the most significant point, and the main takeaway from the essay. Example: “Above all, it seems pertinent to remember that…”

38. Persuasive

Usage: This is a useful word to use when summarising which argument you find most convincing. Example: “Scholar A’s point – that Constanze Mozart was motivated by financial gain – seems to me to be the most persuasive argument for her actions following Mozart’s death.”

39. Compelling

Usage: Use in the same way as “persuasive” above. Example: “The most compelling argument is presented by Scholar A.”

40. All things considered

Usage: This means “taking everything into account”. Example: “All things considered, it seems reasonable to assume that…”

Poverty has been universally affirmed as a main obstacle to the enjoyment of human rights. Basic education provides a child with an understanding of basic health, nutrition, and family planning. Education plays a particularly important role as a foundation for childs’ development towards adults’ life. Education makes students disciplined and well-behaved. It plays a key role in access to job opportunities.

Education Performance in India-

India has also achieved considerable progress in the field of education. It ranks second in the world from the point of view of number of students enrolled in higher education. Our universities and educational institutions have earned international acclaim within a short span of their inception. We are in a position to challenge the world power through brainpower nurtured in our schools, universities, IITs, and IIMs.

Constitutional Provisions Regarding Education-

There are many provisions for education on national and international levels. Indian Constitution provides, free and compulsory education for all children until they complete the age of 14 years; under Article 45 of the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP).  Sustainable development goal 4 (SDG 4)  aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

  • Lack of Funds-

Lack of sufficient funds is the main problem in the development of education. India’s public education spending as a percentage of GDP is the lowest among its peers in the world. Due to the lack of funds, there is a number of challenges in basic educational necessities.

  • Lack of Infrastructure-

Due to insufficient funds, most educational institutions lack infrastructure, science equipment, labs, and libraries, etc. Large number of primary schools have no proper buildings, insufficient sitting arrangement, etc. In rural areas most are single teacher schools and many schools are even without teachers. This results in overcrowded classrooms and no access to educational services.

  • Expensive Higher Education-

Many students drop their higher studies due to expensive higher education. University, professional, and technical education has become costly in India. The privatization of higher education has led to the growth of profit hungry entrepreneurs.

  • Problem of Quality Education-

The problem of quality education arises mainly due to inadequate training of teaching staff and irregular attendance of students. Low quality education is equivalent to illiteracy. It creates a hurdle in desired job opportunities. Quality education decides the capability of a student for a particular job. Thus, quality education is the need of the hour.

  • Lack of Innovation and Creation-

Missing innovation and creation are the biggest challenges in our education system. The current education system is based on riot learning or memorizing things. We should encourage creativity, problem solving, and research, and innovation.

  • Alarming Dropout Rates of Students-

There are many reasons for hikes in dropout rates of students, among them; poverty, families’ responsibility, restrictions on girls’ education, financial issues, etc. are the reasons which pull away a child from their dreams of learning.

Way Forward-

  • We should try to check the lacunae in the educational system and try to ensure quality education for our students.
  • There is a need for proper training of teaching staff.
  • Try to encourage innovative and creative activities among the students and prevent them from riot learning.
  • There is a need to build a robust infrastructure.
  • Try to increase awareness among the parents of the child. It will ensure the regular attendance of the students.

Conclusion-

Education provides skills and competencies for economic well-being. The achievement of childs’ Right to Education can address some of society’s deeply rooted inequalities. Improving educational opportunities helps people to develop skills. These skills allowed them to make decisions and influence community change in important areas. What is 500 word Essay?

A 500-word essay is a type of academic writing typically assigned in schools and colleges. This type of essay format requires the writer to express their thoughts, ideas, or arguments within a concise word limit.

A 500-word essay usually includes 4 to 6 paragraphs, with each paragraph containing approximately 75 to 200 words. The specific number and length of paragraphs can vary based on the type and structure of the essay.

A 500-word essay can be the easiest and the most difficult one to write, at the same time. It all depends on two things; the Topic and the Writer’s Abilities . Teachers often assign 500-word essay assignments as it can help them quickly assess the student’s critical, analytical, and writing skills.

500 Words Essay Format

Here is the format and structure of a well-crafted 500-word essay.

  • Introduction (Approximately 50-75 words)
  • Body Paragraphs (2-3 paragraphs, Approximately 150-200 words)
  • Counterargument (Optional, Approximately 50-75 words)
  • Conclusion (Approximately 50-75 words)

Let's take a closer look at how a 500-word essay is set up and what each part does to make the writing strong and clear.

Tough Essay Due? Hire Tough Writers!

How Long is a 500 Word Essay?

A 500-word essay is typically one to two pages long, depending on formatting and spacing. For APA style , use a 12-point font for serif (e.g., Times New Roman) and 11-point for sans-serif (e.g., Arial). With double spacing, it will extend to approximately 2 pages, while with single spacing, it usually fits onto 1 page.

How Long Should a 500 Word Essay Take?

Typically, for an average writer, composing a 500-word essay might take around 1 to 2 hours. However, this estimate can vary significantly based on individual factors such as familiarity with the topic, writing experience, and the need for extensive research or revision.

How Many Paragraphs is a 500 Word Essay?

A typical 500-word essay generally comprises 4 to 6 paragraphs. Each paragraph contains roughly 75 to 200 words. However, the exact number and length of paragraphs may vary depending on the essay's type and structure.

Word count is important in short essays. So, it’s best to aim for an introduction under 100 words, body paragraphs around 300 words each, and conclude within 100 words.

500-Word Essay vs. 250-Word Essay

A 500-word essay offers more depth than a 250-word one, allowing for additional detail and evidence. This extra content strengthens arguments or supports viewpoints, making the essay more effective.

500-Word Essay vs. 1000+ Word Essay

A 500-word essay is shorter than a 1000+ word essay. The 500-word one usually fits on one to two pages, while the longer essay can span several pages. With more words, the longer essay allows for a deeper exploration of topics and more detailed arguments. However, both essays require clear organization and effective communication of ideas.

How to Write a 500-word Essay?

Writing a 500-word essay is the same as classic essay writing. Here are some steps to keep in mind while writing a 500-word essay.

  • Create an Outline
  • Write a Strong Introduction
  • Composing The Body Paragraphs
  • Write an Impressive Conclusion

Below is a detailed description of each step.

Step 1: Create An Outline

First, make a clear and detailed essay outline , and do not miss anything at this point. It will serve as a backbone for your entire paper.

The purpose of this outline is to break down the ideas in a logical and structured manner.

Step 2: Write A Strong Introduction

The opening paragraph of an essay serves as the reader's initial window into the topic. Grab your reader from the start of this paragraph with an attention-grabbing hook . Make it as interesting and creative as you can so that they don't put down the essay before reading it all!

For writing an essay introduction , you need to introduce your main topic. And give an idea of what the reader may encounter in the rest of the essay. At the end of this paragraph pin your thesis statement .

For Example:

Step 3: Composing The Body Paragraphs

The body section of the essay is mostly divided into 3 paragraphs as discussed above in the format section. It is the point where you need to explain the different types of arguments you make in the essay. Support these arguments with relevant examples, facts, or personal interpretations.

In a 500-word essay, it's best to stick to one main argument with supporting evidence. Longer essays, such as 1000-word essays , can explore multiple arguments as long as they're connected and contribute to a unified thesis.

Step 4: Write an Impressive Conclusion

Conclusion is the last part of the essay where you need to summarise the main argument of the essay. When writing the conclusion of your essay, begin by restating the thesis statement and explaining it with some strong points analyzed in the body section.

Make sure it does not completely iterate the introduction. Focus on providing critical insight into the main subject of discussion.

For Example:

Always proofread your essay for mistakes and inconsistencies. Also, make sure the writing convention checklist is followed, as it will give you a clearer idea of what needs to be improved before submitting!

Describe your favourite place in the world Essay (700 Words)

Humans are complex creatures. We create memories with not only the scenic beauty but with the company associated to it. A child may often cry to visit a park every afternoon. Ask her the reason and she will tell she loves the park. But one afternoon her playmate is unable to visit the park, she will feel restless and start asking to do something else. A few years later, when she revisits the park afterstaying away, she will be seen asking about her long lost friend. You may see her explaining you how she used to love to ride the see-saw and laugh away with the friend. But you might also find her being shy when her mother would laughingly share the anecdotes with her if she doesn’t actually remember those memories.  Such instances do explain how we, the smartest biological creation on this planet associate places to memories and instances with other people.

700 Words Essay on Describe your favourite place in the world

If you ask me, I would always say it is my hometown. But you may ask how. ‘Home is where the Heart is’: a famous tagline I connect to the most. A person stays at various places throughout his lifetime. For instance, he may be born in Varanasi, a beautiful place on its own; but might have travelled to Lucknow with his parents because of their transferrable jobs and did his schooling there. He might have gotten selected in the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi and got shifted there for his university. After that he might have shifted to Oslo for research purpose. Here in this example, we can see four very beautiful places which could all easily be his favourite places. But if we ask him, he might just tell that his favourite place amongst these all is Lucknow, because he had his most beautiful memories in there with his family and friends for lifetime. This easily explains that the place, however beautiful in sight may be, only becomes a favourite to be revisited again and again if only it has those memorable instances that will make your heart feel different with longing.

I live in the outskirts of Kolkata, one of the most visited metropolitans in the world. It has historic significance, some pretty architectural marvel from the colonial times, and has one of the best sunsets I have ever seen along the banks of river Hooghly. It houses the Indian Museum, a marvel outside and inside having stories of collections by the erstwhile Archaeological Survey of India under the British. It also has the Zoological and Botanical Gardens which fancies all ages alike. Kolkata is also the soul of varied culture and secular feelings. The majestic Durga Puja brings a different life to this city where all people from all sections of the society and parts of the world come together. The Park Street lighting up during the Christmas attracts all religions to share time together.

A Boat in the river in present at sunset

In spite of all the attractions that may pull people towards this city, I feel this has become my favourite place in the whole world because it houses my favourite people with fond memories. I’ve been lucky enough to have visited different locations for travel and study, but with those days away from this place, I have experienced a different longing. This city has my home, my school, my college. These minuscule dots on the globe have shaped me into what I am today. Kolkata has the people who I care the most about. This is the place where I have both my ups and downs.

It is true that everything is subjective. This is also the case with my hometown being my favourite place. With time, I’ve lost contact with people I had memories with: with whom I have laughed, played and spent a considerable amount of time. But then, when I go to the places, even if alone, I feel peace and have smile on my face. I can roam around, take a sip from the earthy cup of tea, take my parents to watch the sunset together and make delicious dishes with fresh fish at home. My favourite place is this: where I smile and find peace even after a long lost day.
