Not only was the primary domain USTVGO.tv affected, but multiple alternative access points, such as watchnewslive.tv and ustv247.tv, also displayed the same message, indicating that the service had been closed.

The Soap2Day team shut down the official domains, including soap2day.to, soap2day.sh, soap2day.ac, soap2day.mx, and s2dfree.to (to name a few) on June 19, 2023. While some of its mirrors may be active right now, there is no certainty that they will be taken down or remain active.

They’re also a great way to help learn other languages, or even just to help you figure out what a movie character is saying when he mumbles a crucial line.

If you’re watching a movie, your file may not have any subtitles at all, or it may have a limited number of language options. The good news is that it’s possible to download subtitles for movies and TV shows that don’t come with them already.

There are a number of useful websites that can help you track down the subtitles you need. Here are some of the best sites to download subtitles for movies and TV.

1. OpenSubtitles

OpenSubtitles has an enormous database that’s currently sitting at more than six million subtitles files. You can find subs in one hundred different languages—there are even subtitles in Breton, a language spoken in one small region of France that only has around 200,000 native speakers. If you’re looking for subtitles in more obscure languages, then OpenSubtitles is definitely the place you should look first. There’s an option to have your subtitles translated by AI if you can’t find them in the right language. You’ll need to register for this feature.

Searching for subtitles is simple; type the name of the TV show or movie you’re searching for, choose a language, and hit the search button. You’ll see a list of all available subtitles, as well as some information about the show or movie that they’re for. Some of the subtitles will include ratings from other site users, although with such a huge database, many subtitles are still unrated.

Subscene has a decent selection of subtitles, including many subtitles in HI format. These are subtitles that are specifically designed for the hearing impaired and include additional information other than simply the dialog, such as speaker identification and sound effect descriptions. It’s possible to filter your search results to include just HI subtitles, just non-HI subtitles, or both types.

A nice feature is that you can view subtitles before you download them and edit them if you spot any errors. You need to be a member of the site for ‘a few days’ before you’re able to do so, however. This is presumably to stop people maliciously editing subtitles incorrectly.

Addic7ed also has a forum where you can make requests for subtitles that you’re struggling to find anywhere else. If your subtitle search returns no results, there’s even a useful button to click to instantly make a request on the forum. You’ll need to register to take advantage of all of these features.

5. Subtitle Seeker

Subtitle Seeker has a good selection of subtitles for popular movies and TV shows. Downloading them is a much more challenging experience than it should be, however.

Finding the subtitles is simple enough; there are dedicated pages for TV/Web Series and Movies. There’s also a simple search bar to search for subtitles by name. The vast majority of the subtitles are in English, although you can find some in other languages, and the only format option is the most common format for subtitles: SRT downloads.

Once you’ve found your subtitles, the ‘fun’ really begins. Clicking on the download link takes you to a new website where the subs are hosted. If you try to click any of the download links on this page, however, there’s a high chance that you will instead open an ad in a new tab. You can try installing an adblocker to stop this from happening.  If you don’t use one, the best way we have found to get around this is to right-click and copy the link rather than clicking on it. Pasting this link into a new tab will start the download for your subtitles without any annoying pop-ups.

It’s a frustrating experience, but Subtitle Seeker does host a lot of good subtitles, so it may be something you’re willing to put up with.

This is another site where the name gives you a big clue as to what you’re going to get. It should come as no surprise that TVsubs is a site full of, well, TV subs.

There are subtitles for more than 3,000 different shows and the site is very popular as the on-site stats prove. There have been almost 50 million downloads of English subs and that’s not including all the subs downloaded in different languages. Finding the subs you want isn’t the easiest task; your choices are either to scroll your way through the full list of shows or to use the less-than-stellar search bar. A search for ‘Young Sheldon’ for example, returns a list of all the shows with the word ‘young’ in them. You can get around this by putting your query in quotes, but it’s certainly not intuitive.

Once you’ve found your subs, however, the experience is great. It’s quick and easy to download the subs without any frustrating pop-ups or redirections.

7. YIFY Subtitles

This is one of the rare examples on our list where the name is a little misleading. YIFY was a popular movie torrenting site until it was shut down by the Motion Picture Association of America. Whilst YIFY Subtitles may have originally been intended to host subtitles for popular YIFY torrents, it’s now a general subtitles site that focused solely on movies and has useful subs no matter where you download movies from.

The site has subtitles in more than 70 different languages, and there are links for each language so that you can just see the results for the language that you’re looking for. There are also links for a variety of movie genres, too. The easiest way to find subs for specific shows, however, is to use the search bar. The list of results includes a rating for each item; users can upvote or downvote subs depending on their quality. The rating shows the number of votes received, either positive or negative. It’s a simple way to find the best subtitles more quickly.

Downloading subtitles is quick and easy, with no pop-ups. In fact, there is no advertising anywhere on the site.

8. Moviesubtitles

Moviesubtitles is a no-frills subtitles website that focuses solely on subtitles for movies.

It may not have as many subtitles as some of the other sites on this list but still boasts well over 100,000 different subtitles for more than 20,000 movies.

The interface is clean and simple, and it’s easy to find the movie you want using the search bar. The results also show the number of both upvotes and downvotes that a subtitle has received, making it easy to find the better subtitles without having to hunt too hard. There’s no obvious way to search for a specific language, however. The results are grouped by language, but if you just want to search for French subtitles, for example, there doesn’t seem to be a way to do so.

Downloading your subtitles is a pleasant experience, with no ads or pop-ups to navigate through.

9. TVsubtitles

This is the sister site to Moviesubtitles , but focused, unsurprisingly, on TV shows. Both sites look almost identical and even include links to one another directly on the homepage.

There are subtitles for almost 70,000 different TV episodes in more than 20 different languages. Bizarrely, despite both sites being virtually identical in every other respect, TVsubtitles includes a drop-down box to narrow your search by language, something that is totally missing from Moviesubtitles.  The home page has some useful sections for quickly finding the subs you need, including sections for the latest uploads and the most downloaded subtitles. These lists include national flag icons, so you don’t have to waste time clicking the links to find out what language the subtitles are in. There’s also a list of the most popular TV shows, based on the number of subtitle downloads on the site.

As with Moviesubtitles, downloading your subtitles once you’ve found them is quick and pain-free.

10. Podnapisi

Whilst the name of the site makes it sound unrelated to subs, podnapisi turns out to be the Slovenian word for subtitles. It’s not a site that focuses on Slovenian language subtitles, however. The site itself is all in English, and there are subs in more than 100 different languages, with over 60,000 movies, and almost 8,000 TV shows.

Podnapisis uses global language filters to provide subs in your required language. You can turn off these filters to see all available languages, or you can add multiple languages to the filter to search for several specific languages at once. You can also override the global language filters by selecting a different language in the advanced search options. These include options to search by year, season, episode, and media type (movie or TV show). The home page shows the latest uploads to the site across all types of media, but there are also links to see just the latest movies or TV series.

Once you find your subs, you get a page packed with useful information. There are some details about the show and a list of user reports, such as whether the subtitle is the wrong episode or the wrong language. There’s even a preview of the first 15 subtitles in the file. It means you can quickly see whether the file is going to be of any use. Site users can also upvote and downvote each file so you can get a quick indication of whether other users have found the subs useful.

The site is ad-free with no frustrating pop-ups. There’s also an active forum to get help with subtitles or try to track down more elusive subs.

MySubs is a site where you can not only find subtitles for a multitude of movies and TV shows in a wide range of languages; you can also easily add to them by providing your own translations.

When you search for subtitles for a particular movie or show, there’s a link on each subtitle result to create a new translation. With one click you can start creating a new subtitles file in any language.  If a current translation is showing as in progress rather than completed, you can even click the Join Translation button to jump in and help out.

Frustratingly for a site dedicated to creating subs in multiple languages, there’s no way to filter your search by language. The only search option is the simple search bar at the top of the page. However, navigating through the results is simple; the first results page will be a list of results split into TV shows and Movies. If you select a movie, you’re taken straight to the subtitles page for that movie. If you select a TV show, you’ll then be given a list of seasons to choose from. Clicking on a season then provides a list of episodes, and clicking the appropriate episode gets you to your subtitles files.

There are no ads on the site so, on the whole, MySubs offers a satisfying user experience.

Subdl has the cleanest homepage of any of the sites in this list. It consists of just four menu links and a large search bar that is front and center.

That search bar includes a language filter option that you can set to one of more than 60 languages. You can select up to four languages at once if you’re looking for results in multiple languages. If you don’t set your language before you search, you can filter the results page by language. It makes it quick and easy to find subs in the language that you’re looking for. Once you’ve found some, clicking on the link will start the download straight away. It’s one of the fastest sites on this list for going from loading the site to your subtitles starting to download.

There are some ads on the site, however, and the occasional pop-up when you click on a link. It’s a shame, as otherwise, the whole process with Subdl feels smooth and intuitive. There’s also no community on the site so if you can’t find the subs you need on the site, you won’t be able to request them.

13. English Subtitles for DivX Movies

Many of the websites on this list have names that make it clear what they’re offering. English Subtitles for DivX Movies wins the prize for the most descriptive, if most cumbersome, title.

Unsurprisingly, this site offers English subtitles for DivX movies. In fact, you can find plenty of TV show subtitles in their vaults too, so the descriptive site name turns out to be not that accurate after all. There are links to search for subtitles by the first letter, and each letter has a healthy selection of TV shows and movies to choose from. Bizarrely, the search bar doesn’t work properly at all; all it does is take your search term and paste it into a new web search that’s limited to showing results from just this website. Your browser will probably give you a warning that this form is not secure, so it’s best to avoid using this search method.

If you’re happy to search the long-winded way, then there are a lot of subs available. All of the subtitles are in SUB format, so if you’re looking for SRT subtitles, you’ll need to look elsewhere or convert them to SRT. A site such as Subtitle Tools will allow you to do this online.

14. Subtitles Hub

Subtitles Hub has a good collection of subs, with a wide range of files to choose from for both movies and TV shows.

Searching for subs is easy; there’s a simple search bar, but once you’ve made your search, you’ll see additional options to narrow down your results by language, year, and subtitle file format. You can even search for movies from before or after a specific year. Once you’ve found your subs, you’ll spot some useful information including the ratings from other users. There’s also an option to report the file if you think the subs are corrupted, not synchronous, in the wrong language, or simply for the wrong movie.

There’s a dedicated section of the website where you can submit a request for subs if you can’t find them on the site. You don’t need to register, simply fill in the online form and add your email, and you’ll be notified when the subs become available.

All of which would make Subtitles Hub a near-perfect subtitles site but for one major problem: it’s riddled with pop-up ads, and almost every link you click redirects you somewhere else. It’s incredibly frustrating as otherwise, the site is very useful.

15. Downsub

Downsub is a lot different from any of the sites we’ve looked at so far. That’s because rather than hosting subtitle files that have already been created, it allows you to download subtitles directly from videos hosted on popular video-sharing platforms such as YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, and more.

The process is remarkably quick. Find the video that you want to generate the subtitles for, and copy its URL. Paste this URL into the Downsub website, and click  Download.  You’ll then get the option to choose between SRT or TXT subtitles. There are also additional settings that let you remove any formatting tags from the subs; this option is on by default.

Beneath the obligatory block of ads, there are also links to download the subtitles auto-translated into other languages, with a huge number of language options to choose from. Whilst auto-translated subs will never be perfect, this can be a quick and easy way to get hold of subs in less popular languages that you simply can’t find anywhere else online. Expect to deal with annoying pop-ups, however.

One major drawback of this site is that you can only download subtitles for movies and shows that you can find on video-sharing sites. There are plenty of free ad-supported movies on YouTube , however.

Not technically a website, but given that VLC is the most widely-used video player on PCs and isn’t filled with oft-annoying ads like many websites tend to be, it’s worth mentioning.

How do I use subtitles?

After you download subtitles, which should be .SRT files, open the app you’ll be using to watch the show or movie. Within the menu, there is an option for subtitles. Navigate to your SRT file to upload it to sync it automatically.

Please note that some media players don’t support subtitles unless they’re already inserted into the video. For instance, DVDs that have subtitles would be fine. Always check that your media player supports SRT files.

Why are my subtitles out of sync?

Subtitle files aren’t always perfect. If they’re off by even a few milliseconds, it’s incredibly annoying to deal with. However, you can manually adjust the timing to get your files back in sync. Some media players have this option built in. For example, VLC and Elmedia both offer subtitle editing to adjust the timing to where you need it.

In VLC, open your video and SRT file, then go to Tools -> Track Synchronization to make changes. In Elmedia, open the menu, and go to Settings -> Subtitles -> Subtitles Delay .

You can also use the free online tool SubShifter . You may need to play around with the file to get the timing just right, but it is a useful free option.

What are the different subtitle formats?

In most cases, if you download subtitles, you’ll mainly encounter SRT, SUB, and IDX files. For single languages, SRT files are best. If you want multiple languages in a single file, you’ll need SUB and IDX files. However, it’s important to note that SRT is the more widely accepted format.

Naturally, this excludes subtitle formats that are already hard encoded into a file.

A few other formats you may find include SSA, TXT, VTT, SBV, TTML, and DFXP. Some of these are specific to certain sites and apps. For instance, SBV is what YouTube supports if you’re uploading subtitles. A plain text file, or TXT, will serve you well when an SRT isn’t available.

How can I get my subtitles to load automatically?

Many media players that support external subtitles load them automatically. You only have to do one thing: name the subtitle file the same as your video. For example, if I was loading subtitles for XYZ Movie, my video might be called “xyz_movie.” I’d need to also name the subtitle file “xyz_movie.” There’s no need to change any file extensions. Keep everything in the same folder to make it easier to stay organized.

The site is a truly international affair, with over 50 different language options to choose from, allowing you to search the site in languages from Aragonese to Vietnamese.

Each upload comes with a movie name, upload date, comments, and an overall rating for the quality of the subtitles provided. Using the prominent search bar at the top, you can look for subtitles that have been uploaded by other users. An advanced search bar lets you search by age, rating, format, and more.

Like Crackle, Popcornflix presents full movies with limited ads. Here, you'll find a range of movies in a rotating selection, and there's no account required to start watching. The service even offers some original content, to boot.

Flicks are segmented into genres that are more unique than the standard ones, such as Out for Revenge and Medieval Action . With a beefy lineup and easy navigation, Popcornflix is an awesome choice for free, legal movie streaming.

Providing free movies and shows, Tubi is another fantastic service for legal movie streams. Here, you'll be able to view newer movies from as recent as 2022, as well as older favorites.

Helpfully, Tubi offers a Leaving Soon category. This lets you prioritize your streaming queue so you can catch movies and shows before they disappear. Be sure to check out the First Time on Tubi collection, too.

7. Pluto TV

Pluto TV has a lot to offer. You'll find a Live TV section where you can switch between channels, much like traditional cable. Switch to the Live TV section on the left side to jump to channels that only play films, though they may be in the middle of something depending on when you start watching.

If you can't find something that you like on the live stations, switch to the On Demand section at the top. Here you'll find tons of free movies you can start streaming right away.

8. Classic Cinema Online

As the name suggests, Classic Cinema Online focuses on older content. Even its website aesthetic captures a decidedly retro vibe, using a backdrop of red theater curtains. You can walk through the decades here with films from the 1930s to the 1960s. There are even some silent films on offer, if you're interested in those.

Some of the inclusions may have you calling the definition of "classic cinema" into question. Nevertheless, Classic Cinema Online is pure gold for old-school movies and one of the best sites for public domain films .

Hoopla has one barrier to entry, but is still an easy way to legally watch movies online for free. To use Hoopla, you'll need to create an account and link your supported public library card.

Once you do, you can use Hoopla to borrow movies and TV shows, plus audiobooks and ebooks, from your library's collection. The service is available on the web as well as apps for all your devices and TV streaming boxes.

If you don't have a library card or your library doesn't support Hoopla, you won't be able to use it. But if you can, it's a service worth checking out.

Although Yidio isn't a video host, it does act as an excellent aggregator of free streaming movies and TV shows. The way Yidio works is by redirecting you to third-party services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, and others. As such, certain films and shows here do require a subscription.

Using the Free filter on the left side will help you find movies and TV that come at no cost. Unfortunately, not everything in the free categories is actually free. Clicking on some titles prompts you to sign up for a free trial.

Still, Yidio makes finding free movie streams far easier than checking individual sites manually. You can filter by rating, genre, and more to find something to watch.

11. The Roku Channel

Don't be fooled by The Roku Channel's name. While it's available for Roku streaming devices via an app, you can watch on the web too. With a few clicks, you can stream Roku Originals, popular TV shows, and new-arrival movies.

The selection rotates, and there are categories on the main page to help you find something you'll enjoy. As expected, you'll have to sit through ads, but ad-supported means free, right?

Libraries are most often associated with books, but that's not all they provide. Kanopy, like Hoopla mentioned above, lets you stream tons of "thoughtful entertainment" movies for free, making it another great way to get free content with a participating library card (or university login).

With either of those, you can watch hundreds of free movies. These include a lot of documentaries and international films, so this is a great fit for those who want something a little different.

13. Amazon Freevee

Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) lets you enjoy free movies on Amazon Video. The service launched in 2019 and while its name has changed, the experience has remained the same. It allows anyone with a free account to watch a selection of free movies and TV shows. In addition to watching online, you can enjoy this content on your Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, and other streaming devices.

Alongside the movies, you'll also find some TV series (including live channels) and originals to enjoy.

14. Free Movies Cinema

As the name suggests, Free Movies Cinema features legal free movie streaming. Unlike many sites, the selection touts not only general categories like action and comedy, but also short films and features.

There's also a collection of fan-made movies, such as Portal and Watch Dogs, based on video games of the same names.

You won't need to sign up for anything in order to watch free movies online. You don't need to have a subscription or an account with these sites in order to watch these movies. But the sites don't know who you are. They may require that you enter your birth date to verify that you're old enough to watch movies intended for mature audiences. All the movies should be able to stream without download, and you often can watch in HD movie quality. Use Yidio to sort by IMDB Score or Rotten Tomatoes.

Peacock, a new service from NBCUniversal, offers hundreds of movies and thousands of TV episodes from the media giant's catalog. And it's all free to stream on the platform's website. Crackle offers an impressive catalog of theatrical movies. And it also offers a library of original series and movies you can only watch on the Crackle platform. The Roku Channel offers hundreds of movie, live news and TV series. Some have complete seasons. All this is free to viewers who use Roku streaming devices.

Free Movies on Streaming Websites

The no-charge content on these platforms is a little different from the free trials offered by many subscription streaming services. The content on Crackle or Peacock, for example, is available without the need to set up an account on the platform. You also don't have to provide any payment information. Free-trial services work a little differently. Many premium streaming platforms, such as Disney+ and Apple TV+, offer free trial periods during which you can watch their content without paying. The same is true of many network streaming platforms such as STARZ or Showtime. The difference is that you'll need to sign up for an account on the platform and provide payment information. You won't be charged a subscription fee during the free-trial period. But if you don't cancel by the time the trial period ends, your account will automatically convert to a paid subscription. You'll be charged the subscription fee.

Keeping Free Movies Online

Of course, there's often a trade-off involved when it comes to watching movies for free. Sites often subsidize their free streaming movies offerings by including advertising along with the films. I was shocked the first time I found out YouTube has free movies. And no, these aren't poorly filmed videos without subtitles uploaded by some random user. I mean proper, full-length, totally legal movies managed directly by YouTube.

Recently, I was able to watch Project Gemini and Empire State ; both included captions and were available in 1080p. Here are some other examples of free films I saw listed on YouTube this past month: Employee of the Month, LOL, Open 24 Hours , and In Time.

Something you can't get with YouTube but that is supported by most of these movie sites is the ability to search through just the free titles. However, here's a trick that has saved me loads of time: Open the full list of movies and use your browser's Find function to search by year, genre, or title.

YouTube's curated list (the link below) is the best way to find all their new and popular free films. Some companies, like Cineverse , list movies in their own profile.

Fandango at Home

There are thousands of movies on Fandango at Home that you can watch right now. All you have to do is put up with a few commercials.

It's a great movie site whether you do or don't know what you want to watch. Films can be filtered by genre, and you can browse by most-watched or release date. All the basic genres are available: action, comedy, crime, romance, and a few others.

While it's true that the genres aren't interesting, Fandango at Home makes up for it with their curated lists. Check these out: Big Time Movie Stars , Critically Acclaimed , Hidden Gems , and Most Watched Movies . There are a few hundred videos in each section.

Something unique about this site is that it not only lets you look through the newest releases, but you can do so on a single page for every genre. Another great thing about Fandango at Home's movies is that some of them are in 1080p, so you don't have to sacrifice quality just to watch some free movies.

Once you settle on something to watch, you might be given the option to buy or rent it, but so long as you find it through one of the free pages, there will be a button you can use to stream the movie without paying. You can even watch movies still in theaters .

Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) is Amazon's collection of free movies. I use this a lot from my TV, but it's just as easily accessible from their website or mobile app. Everything I watch here is easy to find and seems to be high-quality.

Something I like about this site is how the genres and movie collections are organized. For example, if I'm looking through the most popular movies or recently added lists, I can filter by genre and/or subtitle language to make sure I find a movie that's a good fit for me.

The video player lets you turn on subtitles, adjust the way the captions show up on the screen, change the video quality, and go into full-screen mode.

There's a lot to explore here, including original films, but I'll get you started with these titles that are some of the more popular choices: Split, The Turning, Hotel Transylvania 3, and My Mom's New Boyfriend.

Pluto TV is the closest thing I've found to free cable TV. It's owned by Paramount and fully supported by ads, so there's no worry that you might accidentally buy something.

My biggest joy about using this service is that I can just turn it on and let it play. There are hundreds of live channels, so some of them feature news, reality TV, or game shows, but others have full-length movies.

Not everything is live, though, which is good. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I can look through thousands of movies and TV shows that are available on demand.

The unique categories for their on-demand films are a huge plus because most movie sites just stick to the traditional few genres. Hollywood Icons, The King of Horror, Whoa. Keanu is on Pluto TV , 00s Replay, and Cult Films are a few examples.

These are some of the most-watched movies on Pluto TV this last month: Good Burger, Road Trip, School of Rock, Red Eye , and Equilibrium .

In my experience, running Pluto TV through a TV makes it easier to use because the always-on video player gets in the way on smaller screens. But, there is a mobile app and a desktop player if you'd rather go that route.

I'm so happy I stumbled on Yidio years ago! It's like a search engine for all these other movie sites. It's incredibly handy because it shows where on the internet a movie is available for free.

A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

This isn't a perfect service, but it works great nearly every time I use it.

Plex is an interesting service because it's actually a much bigger package than it might seem at first. In addition to its massive collection of free full-length movies and TV shows, Plex also has live TV and software that serves as a really cool at-home media server .

Currently, there are tens of thousands of free movies and shows here. They're sectioned off in traditional genres like action and crime, but you can also browse by actor or channel. Plex has its own unique collections, too; I've seen Feel Good Films , Til Death Do Us Part, Oh-My-Godzilla, Cheap Thrills, and Midnight Movies .

On a movie's watch page are similar titles and additional details that help build a total picture of the film, like the full cast list, reviews, and trailers. I love this because it makes it easy to find other movies on Plex with the same stars.

See which movies on Plex are leaving soon to catch them before they go! Plex's Most Popular page lists The Girl Next Door, Cruel Intentions, Scary Movie 4, Movie 43, and others.

If you can't find what you want on Plex, the title you're interested in might still show up in the results, and you'll be given links to places you can buy/rent it (sort of like Yidio, listed above).

Filmzie is built for streaming movies from independent filmmakers and both small and large studios. The site and app are well-designed, and there are plenty of great titles to stream.

Here are some collections I've seen that are rare to find on a movie site: Directed by Women, European Production, Asia's Top Cinema, LGBTQI+, Cuddle-Up Comedies , and Independent Cinema . Of course, over 20 traditional genres, like drama and thriller, are also available. Trending, new, and most-watched movies each have their own section as well.

Filmzie does a great job organizing its movies. This is the main reason I use it. That, and there are so many videos here that I have never even heard of, so it's the perfect place to find something brand new.

Some movies that were trending recently include Lady Chatterley's Lover , Dark Souls, Raven, Delicious, and The Frame.

I've used the website and the mobile app, and both work more or less the same as these other movie sites.

Crackle is a no-brainer for this list. I always come back to it to watch free movies online because of its list of hundreds of full-length films and original programming. These are big-name movies with stars I'm sure you know.

Although you have to sit through commercials, I find them to be relatively short, with only a few breaks during a movie.

Another reason I choose Crackle is because of its unique categories like Summer Binge-a-Thon , Foreign Language, Stand-Up, British, Variety/Talk/Games, and Unidentified/Unexplained . It's fun to look through interesting genres like this.

A closed captioning toggle is available directly from the video player for all users but, if you sign up for an account (it's free), you can also enable parental controls (options are kids mode, teen mode, and grown-up mode).

You might already know about Roku's free movies if you have a Roku TV or streaming device. But even if you don't, you can still watch all the same free movies, TV shows, and live TV from a computer, phone, or tablet.

There are some ads in these movies, but the trade-off is high-quality videos and well-known movies.

On the home page are handy categories I have yet to find on another website with free movies. They often change, but some that I've seen recently include End of Summer Laughs, Dinosaurs & Dragons, Leading Men, Retro Action Movies , and Music on the Small Screen.

While there are also typical genre lists you can browse through, none of them let you sort by popularity or filter by rating or year. This is by far my biggest issue with the service. That, and both TV shows and movies are mixed into the same lists and said lists must be browsed horizontally in a carousel-like menu. It's just not super user-friendly.

However, I do like that you can search for actors and directors to find movies they're associated with. I also appreciate the Continue watching section.

The Kanopy movie streaming site is different from these other choices because you need a valid library card or university login before you can watch anything. However, there are zero commercials in the movies, and new films are added every month.

Use Kanopy's signup page to search for your library , whether it's a public library or one attached to a school. You can start watching movies after you've been approved.

Kanopy does a great job of providing useful categories to look through. There's Short Film, History - Ancient, LGBTQ Cinema, War & Action, Sociology, Performing Arts, Human Rights, Everyday Health, and K-12 Lessons .

A few of the more popular movies here include God's Own Country, Lady Bird, The Bookshop, and Anomalisa.

There's also an entirely separate section for kid movies at Kanopy . My son's old enough now to watch more mature movies, but if he weren't, I'd be thrilled with this. There are subsections like Story Time and Read-Along Storybooks . You can also set up parental controls to force only age-appropriate content.

The Vietnamese government and film studio group the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment say they've taken down the largest pirate streaming operation in the world.

The organization, comprising the notorious Fmovies piracy site, along with others including bflixz, flixtorz, movies7, myflixer and aniwave, was founded in 2016. It drew more than 6.7 billion visits between January 2023 and June 2024 and has been pulling in nearly 374 million monthly visits, making it the largest piracy ring in the world.

Earlier this year, Charles Rivkin, chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association and chairman of ACE said that around one third of the site’s traffic came from the U.S.

Meanwhile, Vidsrc.to, a notorious video hosting provider operated by the same suspects was also taken down, impacting hundreds of additional dedicated piracy sites.

"The takedown of Fmovies is a stunning victory for casts, crews, writers, directors, studios, and the creative community across the globe," said Rivkin.

"With the leadership of ACE and the partnership of the Ministry of Public Security and the Hanoi Municipal Police, we are countering criminal activity, defending the safety of audiences, reducing risks posed to tens of millions of consumers, and protecting the rights and livelihoods of creators."

At its peak in 2023, data analytics company SimilarWeb rated Fmoviesz.to as the 11th most popular website in the TV, Movies & Streaming category - and 280th most popular website across all categories of websites globally. It was listed on the USTR "notorious markets" list between 2017 and 2023, and last year was found by the U.S. Trade Representative to have more than 60 associated domains used by "significant piracy operations".

Vietnam has been a thorn in the side of the movie industry for quite some time, hosting sites such as 123Movies, taken down in 2018.

"Strengthening intellectual property rights is an important element of the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership," said U.S. Ambassador Marc E. Knapper.

"These prosecutions demonstrate Vietnam’s commitment to intellectual property rights enforcement, contributing to an economic ecosystem where creators and inventors can thrive."

The Vietnam Film Development Association says that the takedown should be good news for the Vietnamese film industry.

"The Vietnamese movie industry is at a pivotal stage of development, transitioning from a state-subsidized production model to a rapidly growing phase driven by private sector involvement," said chairwoman Ngo Phuong Lan.

"To achieve fast and sustainable growth and integrate into the global film industry, it is essential that we follow the right path. Intellectual property rights protection is a crucial element for our industry’s success."

Efforts to stamp out piracy have faltered in recent years, with bills cracking down on the practice, proposed in 2011, failing thanks to opposition from tech firms and free speech campaigners. However, earlier this year, Rivkin said that the film companies were hoping to work with members of Congress to reintroduce similar bills, allowing copyright holders to request the takedown of infringing sites.

According to a recent report from piracy tracking firm MUSO and consulting firm Kearney, there were more than 141 billion visits to pirate video sites worldwide last year, with the U.S and India the main sources of traffic. Video piracy is claimed to be costing the U.S. economy between $29.2 and $71 billion each year.

If we’re being honest, the streaming app that your correspondent uses most — more than Netflix or Amazon Prime or Hulu , and more than any of the less- recognizable subscription streamers we’ve previously spotlighted here — is Plex , though for reasons owing less to its current iteration than to its humble beginnings.

Plex launched in the late 2000s as free media-server software, allowing its users to set up a client-server on either their home computer or on a network-attached storage device for their personal libraries of movies, television episodes and music. Setup and integration are fairly simple, and once the app has been directed to the user’s files, it matches titles to its database of films and shows, which can be streamed to a variety of devices (including Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire and smart TVs). Best of all, you can share your libraries with friends, and vice versa, for either individual or “watch together” viewing. It’s a nifty way to watch whatever you want, wherever you want — for free, at least in its basic form. (The paid “ Plex Pass ” offers additional bells and whistles.)

Of course, it’s difficult for a service to make money functioning solely as a free app for personal streaming, so Plex began expanding its offerings and utility in recent years. In 2019, the app added live TV streaming and DVR functionality, allowing its users the option of full-on cord cutting for an additional monthly fee. The following year, Plex introduced its ad-supported video on demand (AVOD) streaming service and free-to-stream live TV channels . As with Tubi , Pluto TV and other AVOD services, the automated commercial breaks aren’t always executed with finesse; the breaks sometimes fall mid-scene, or even midsentence. But it’s hard to complain when it comes with a $0 price tag.

This February, Plex launched another feature: a VOD rental service , allowing viewers to shell out a few bucks to stream new releases in the app, rather than in Amazon, Apple or Vudu. Sure, it’s a revenue-generator, but it also helps make Plex, in its own words, something of a concierge service. With the “ Universal Watchlist ” function, you tell the app which streaming services you use, and thereafter, whenever you add a movie or show to your watchlist, it will show you where to find it: via one of your other services, in a media library (yours or a friend’s) or through Plex’s own AVOD or VOD portals. It essentially makes the app the center of your streaming universe, and in an increasingly convoluted digital media landscape, that’s a useful function indeed.

‘ Master of the Flying Guillotine ’: This 1976 wuxia epic from the writer, director and star Jimmy Wang Yu is one of the era’s most beloved martial arts extravaganzas. Technically a sequel to Wang Yu’s smash “One-Armed Boxer” from the previous year, this tale of a blind warrior seeking revenge against Wang Yu’s antihero is full of clever innovations and complications in its plentiful action sequences. Most impressively, the filmmaker shoots his action scenes the way a fighter fights, up close and personal, with the graceful camera right in the middle of the bone-cracking action.
