We’ll once again likely learn more details about Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth there, as we’re now closer to the release of both titles. The summit will air on Sega’s Twitch and YouTube channels at 8 p.m. PT on September 19.

As part of Tokyo Game Show 2023, Microsoft will hold an Xbox Digital Broadcast at 2 a.m. PT on September 21. An Xbox Wire post about the show says the people tuning in will see “progress updates from Xbox and Bethesda Softworks and see a creatively diverse collection of games from creators predominantly located in Japan and across Asia,” in addition to some new Xbox Game Pass titles.

To end the summer season of game showcases, we’re getting another showcase from Capcom to line up with Tokyo Game Show 2023. This livestream will take place at 7 a.m. PT on September 21 and feature games like Street Fighter 6, Exoprimal, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy , and Monster Hunter Now , plus the VR mode for Resident Evil 4’s remake.

Crash Team Rumble initially feels like a unexpected diversion for the long-running Crash Bandicoot series, but it’s a lot more fun than you might expect. I went hands-on with Crash Team Rumble at Summer Game Fest Play Days, and once I got the hang of its Wumpa-collecting match objectives, I had a blast discovering winning strategies with my teammates. Still, it feels like a pretty significant shift for developer Toys for Bob, which spent the 2010s working on Skylanders, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time.

Crash Team Rumble™ - Gameplay Launch Trailer

You'd think that after spending four days at Summer Game Fest playing dozens of games (including heavy-hitters like Mortal Kombat 1 and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown) that we'd be a little demoed-out. But nothing rejuvenates my excitement about video games more than playing innovative indies that are unlike anything I've ever seen before. That's exactly what this year's Tribeca Fest delivered this year, with seven eye-catching games that were playable at the festival.

This year's selections are a diverse bunch of games hailing from studios all around the world; the list included titles from Australia, Ecuador, and even Qatar. It isn't just their countries of origin that makes them stand out though. Each title on display this year is entirely unique, offering a wide range of play experiences that prove how much more ground there is to break within the medium.

Digital Trends attended Summer Game Fest Play Days once again this year, as well as events held by Xbox and Ubisoft, and we were able to play demos of a variety of upcoming games from all corners of the industry. We played or saw a hands-off demo of over 30 games slated to release throughout the next year or so. From new entries in long-running series like Mortal Kombat or Armored Core to more quirky and experimental indies that are pushing the video game medium forward, there was a lot for us to like at this Summer Game Fest Play Days and its surrounding events. Still, we talked and narrowed things down to our ten favorites so you could have a succinct list of some of the best-looking video games that are on the horizon. In no particular order- with the exception of our Game of the Show - here are our 10 favorite games we played last week as part of Summer Game Fest. Game of the Show: Cocoon

It’s incredibly difficult to describe what makes Cocoon so special; it’s truly one of those games you need to actually play to understand. The atmospheric, insect-themed adventure game transported me to another world entirely during my demo session, letting me get fully lost in its sci-fi ambiance. Part of that is due to the astonishingly tight game design that had me traversing its visually striking environments and naturally solving puzzles with no explanation necessary. It’s an experience that stuck with me long after I put the controller down, and I wasn’t the only one. It was the one game on my peers’ tongues all weekend, as both press and content creators couldn’t stop praising it despite not being able to describe why. That makes it an easy pick for our game of the show, beating out some impressive Titans on this list. ~ Giovanni Colantonio Armored Core VI: Flames of Rubicon

I'm excited to see what the Summer Game Fest will show us this year. — Zachary Boddy, Windows Central Staff Writer

Hello all, I'm Brendan Lowry. Team Windows Central is excited to welcome you to our live coverage of Summer Game Fest 2023! There's not much that can pull me away from Diablo 4 right now, but a flashy showcase full of world premieres, surprise announcements, and new trailers definitely did the trick. Sorry, Blessed Mother — you'll have to wait until tonight for my attention.

As my colleague Zachary said, we'll bring you predictions, live news updates, and analyses before, during, and after the showcase. On top of that, we'll share our full thoughts on what we're hoping to see, as well as what we actually do see. We're hope you're as excited for the show as we are! — Brendan Lowry, Windows Central Contributor

What to expect from Summer Game Fest 2023

While there will no doubt be plenty of surprises during the showcase, there are also several games we know will appear thanks to announcements from publishers, developers, and Geoff Keighley himself. We've listed all of these titles below to give you an idea of what to expect from Summer Game Fest ahead of the show.

  • Alan Wake 2
  • Baldur's Gate 3
  • Fortnite Wilds
  • Immortals of Aveum
  • Mortal Kombat 1
  • Thorne and Liberty

In addition to the games listed above, we also know that the stylized puzzle-platformer COCOON from LIMBO and INSIDE designer Jeppe Carlsen will feature during DoubleFine and iam8bit's Day of the Devs show, which is slated to take place right after SGF. Right after, there's also the Devolver Direct, in which Devolver Digital will show off some of the new games it's publishing.

It'll be awesome to finally see gameplay of Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake 2, as the original was one of my favorite action-adventure games of the 2010s. We're hoping to see details on Cyberpunk 2077's "spy-thriller" Phantom Liberty expansion (featuring Idris Elba), too, and who can say no to some ultraviolent Mortal Kombat 1 footage?

Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 is also making an appearance, with the next entry in the legendary series scheduled to release later this year on August 31, 2023 on Windows PC and PS5. As someone who adored Divinity: Original Sin II and is always down for a new isometric RPG, I'm definitely hyped to see more of this one. Sadly, it's been delayed on Xbox due to technical problems , so the developers haven't announced a release date for that version of the game yet. — Brendan Lowry

Here's what Team Windows Central wants to see at SGF 2023

Summer Game Fest 2023 is only an hour away now! Ahead of the presentation, I asked some of my colleagues what they're hoping to see during the show and why. Here's what they said:

"I just want a shadow drop. At this point, I don't even care what it is a shadow drop of, I just like the hype of them."  — Cole Martin, Contributor

"I just want to see interesting, creative games from a wide variety of teams and developers. I want exciting trailers that feature gameplay, and I want to see games I can play in the next year or two. It'd be nice for Summer Game Fest to highlight great indie games, too, not just AAA blockbusters. I'm certainly not interested in watching 30 ads that aren't properly disclosed as ads." — Zachary Boddy, Staff Writer

"I'm interested in seeing more of new Mortal Kombat. I'm intrigued as to how the classic MK characters are going to be reimagined in this new rebooted universe and what the story will be like this time since Liu Kang (the series' protagonist) is now a god. I'm also interested in seeing the new Kameo Fighter mechanic to see if it will turn Mortal Kombat into a tag assist-based fighting game like Marvel vs. Capcom/Dragonball FighterZ or if it's gonna be like Assist Trophies in Super Smash Brothers." — Alexander Cope, Contributor

"Geoff Keighley always does an excellent job hyping up his games showcases. In recent years we've seen the team invest more time and energy into making Summer Game Fest a must-watch show. With Xbox and PlayStation listed as official partners, I'd be stoked to see these major players bring noteworthy first-party reveals to the event." — Miles Dompier, Contributor

"I want to see a major reveal that  isn't  CGI. Don't get me wrong, I've been excited at stuff like the Mass Effect reveal before, but it would be really cool to see a major game get announced with actual in-engine footage." — Samuel Tolbert, Contributor

"I'm really looking forward to seeing more of Alan Wake 2 gameplay. This sequel looks like it could be a whole lot darker than the original and I'm intrigued by what we've seen thus far." — Rebecca Spear, Gaming Editor

And me? While I'm definitely with Rebecca on the Alan Wake 2 hype train, some gameplay for Armored Core 6 and/or a new trailer for Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is what my heart truly desires. I've had some of my favorite and most memorable gaming experiences in FromSoftware titles (Elden Ring in particular might be my new favorite game of all time), so I'm always ecstatic to see more of what the studio is cooking up next. There's a solid chance we'll see the developer appear at the show, too; after all, Elden Ring's official gameplay reveal trailer was shown during SGF 2021. — Brendan Lowry

We've got about 15 minutes until SGF 2023 starts, so grab some snacks and get comfy! I'd make some popcorn, but I'm in charge of this live blog, and I need to keep my keyboard clear of melted butter. You, fortunately, don't have to worry about that problem. — Brendan Lowry

Here we go! Summer Game Fest 2023 has begun, and its various reveals, announcements, and trailers are imminent. We'll bring you details on all the goods as soon as they're shown, so stay tuned! Hopefully Geoff Keighley has a great show for us. — Brendan Lowry

Summer Game Fest 2023 forgot to bring the heat

Summer Game Fest 2023 is over, and we have to admit, we at Team WC are feeling a bit underwhelmed by the show. While there was certainly some great stuff on display — we loved getting to see more of Alan Wake 2, Mortal Kombat 1, and Lies of P — the pacing of the show definitely felt awkward and off, and ultimately, we were left wanting more.

In particular, we were surprised that the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC didn't make an appearance. With the price of the expansion and GOG.com preorders leaking recently, it was widely predicted that it would appear at SGF 2023. Maybe we'll see it during the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday. — Brendan Lowry

Do you remember Devolver Digital's mascot, Volvy? We don't, either, but the Devolver Direct began with a full 10 minute sequence of the publisher trying to gaslight the internet into believing he's real. It was basically one giant meme, and we loved every second of it. — Brendan Lowry

With one of the weirdest announcements I've ever seen, Devolver has announced Baby Steps. In it, you'll play as Nate, a middle-aged man who does nothing but lay around in his parents' basement, eat, and watch TV. As a result, he's terrible at walking, but after he gets teleported to a strange place, that's exactly what he'll need to do. We expect intentionally terrible controls and other shenanigans when it releases on Windows PC and PS5 in 2024.  — Brendan Lowry

Devolver announces Human Fall Flat 2 for PC and consoles

The final game shown during the Devolver Direct was Human Fall Flat 2, a sequel to the critically acclaimed and hilarious physics-based puzzle game Human Fall Flat. The game doesn't have a release date yet, but it's been confirmed to come to both consoles and Windows PCs. The first game is available on Xbox, so we expect the second game will be as well. — Brendan Lowry

And that's a wrap on Summer Game Fest 2023 and its Day of the Dev and Devolver Digital follow-up shows! Overall, I thought it was an okay day of news, though I was hoping for some more exciting reveals from the SGF showcase in particular. There's no doubt in my mind that Microsoft will blow everyone away with its Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, though, so I'm looking forward to that (and don't worry, we'll be live blogging that, too).

Over the course of the next 24 hours, Team Windows Central will continue to update this blog with our SGF 2023 reactions, analyses, opinions, and more. We'll also bring you any breaking news that didn't make its way into the presentation itself, so keep an eye out for it!  — Brendan Lowry

Joker from Persona

Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Tactica leaked, coming to Xbox Game Pass

Immediately after SGF 2023's conclusion, two new games in the Persona series named Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Tactica have leaked on an Instagram account run by franchise publisher Atlus. Screenshots and a gameplay trailer show that Persona 5 Tactica is a strategy spinoff of Persona 5, while Persona 3 Reload is expected to be a remake or remaster of the original Persona 3.

Notably, the leak suggests that both games will launch on Xbox and Windows PC, with Persona 3 Reload coming in 2024 and Persona 5 Tactica arriving on Nov. 17, 2023. Additionally, it reveals that both games are coming to Xbox Game Pass.

Since the aforementioned trailer had Xbox branding, it's clear these games weren't supposed to be announced until the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday. Oops! — Brendan Lowry

The cover art for The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood.

I want these four games shown today on Xbox

There were some great games show throughout today, with many of my favorites being some creative indie titles from a variety of developers and publishers, including Devolver Digital. Hauntii, COCOON, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, and Wizard with a Gun were all highlights, and they're all coming to Xbox.

There were four indie games shown today that I'd love to play on my console of choice, though, that aren't coming to Xbox at launch (and aren't confirmed to be coming to the platform at all). This is my public declaration that I want these games , sooner rather than later. I have access to other platforms, but Xbox is where the majority of my games are (and I like collecting Gamerscore from achievements).

1. Eternights from Studio Sai is a unique dating action game that looks stupidly adorable, and it's coming to Windows PC and PlayStation at launch. It may eventually come to Xbox and Switch, too, though, so there's at least hope for this quirky title. Maybe I won't have to wait an eternity.

2. The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood from Deconstructeam and Devolver Digital looks unbelievably stunning, and is a narrative adventure game surrounded by tarot cards and a mysterious society of powerful witches. Unfortunately, it's only confirmed for Windows PC and Nintendo Switch. Consider me a sad witch.

3. Saltsea Chronicles from Die Gute Fabrik combines dashing good looks and unique art design with a campaign centered around a deep conspiracy, and I can't get enough of its vibrant, pastel art and diverse cast of interesting characters. This, too, is only confirmed for Windows PC and Nintendo Switch at the moment. Yes, I am a little salty.

4. Finally, Bleak Sword DX from more8bit and Devolver Digital is a brutal dark action game that manages to squeeze surprising levels of personality and depth out of some of the most simplistic pixel art character design I've seen in a game. Ferocious, difficult combat is the core of this game and the reason I want to play, but it launched only on Windows PC and Nintendo Switch today. Yeah, thinks are looking bleak.

I hope all of these games eventually find a home (and a new community) on Xbox, because I'd love to play them all on my personal first choice gaming platform. If any of these publishers (or any and all indie games publishers, honestly), want to put their games on my radar, you know how to reach me. — Zachary Boddy

Lies of P in-game screenshot of Krat's streets

I'm excited for these 5 games shown at Summer Game Fest 2023

It's been several hours since the SGF 2023, Day of the Devs, and Devolver Direct showcases concluded, and I've been thinking a lot about all of the games that we got to see today. I liked the look of most of the games shown during all three shows, but there were five in particular that I can confidently say were my favorites.

1. Lies of P — FromSoftware didn't make an appearance with Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC or Armored Core 6 like I was hoping it would, but at least Neowiz and Round 8 gave us a closer look at the style of its upcoming Pinocchio-themed Soulslike Lies of P. The game's dark and horror-filled steampunk world instantly captivated me and reminded me of Bloodborne (with more of a mechanized look, of course), and everything I've seen of its gameplay so far looks very polished and stylish. I'm looking forward to trying the game's playable demo on Xbox and PC as soon as the not-E3 craze is over, and am eagerly anticipating the September 19 release. Don't miss our hands-on Lies of P preview by my fellow WC Contributor Alexander Cope!

2. Palworld — Next to Devolver Digital's Baby Steps, this is probably the wackiest game that was shown today, and I think it looks absolutely hilarious. I can't say I've ever wondered what Pokemon would look like if it was a third-person shooter, but I'm glad developer Pocketpair decided that someone needed to find out. When its January 2024 Early Access rolls around, I'm totally giving it a try.

3. Path of Exile 2 — Truth be told, I never played much of the first Path of Exile, but my love of the recently released Diablo 4 has rekindled my appreciation for ARPGs. The trailer for Path of Exile 2 showed off gorgeous environments and some deadly magic abilities that have me reaching for my Sorcerer in Diablo 4, so I'm excited to see more come July 28.

4. Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 — New co-op games always pique my interest, as these days, there just aren't enough good non-PvP games to play with friends. Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 including co-op support rules, and what we saw of the game today looked incredibly fun. Winter 2023 can't come fast enough.

5. Human Fall Flat 2 — There wasn't much for Human Fall Flat 2 today beyond the announcement that it exists, but that was enough to get me hyped. The original game is uniquely special to me since it was one of the games I regularly played with my girlfriend while we were long distance a few years back, and now that we're living together, I can't wait to play the sequel with her at my side. Hopefully we get a concrete release window soon.

Also, an honorable mention for Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3. While its appearance at the show didn't wow me — it was basically just a short introduction of the character Gortash, voiced by Jason Isaacs — it's still undoubtedly one of my most anticipated games of 2023. Divinity: Original Sin 2 has convinced me that if anyone is capable of bringing Baldur's Gate back in a big way, it's the folks at Larian.  — Brendan Lowry

Every announcement from the Xbox Games Showcase 2023

Every last trailer and new game reveal

Arguably the main event of this year's NotE3 and Summer Game Fest season, tonight's Xbox Games Showcase had more fresh game announcements than you can shake a Series X at. If you missed it or just want a handy recap of every new trailer that went down, we've got you covered. Here's everything that was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase 2023 .

A big old look at lovely Fable, with Richard Ayoade playing Dave the giant grocer

Cover image for YouTube video

Kicking things off with a bang, we got our first proper look at Playground Games' Fable . It will be a Day One Game Pass game, too, and will feature a giant veggie enthusiast called Dave played by British comedian Richard Ayoade. It sure looks like Fable all right, with daft jokes, fart jokes and other flavours of jokes. Us Brits like our jokes, all right? We also got to see tiny glimpses of its magic combat and the legendary beasts we'll be fighting. Still no release date, though.

New game South Of Midnight is a stop-motion stunner

Cover image for YouTube video

A crusty stop motion musician called Shakin' Bones took centre stage here to introduce a brand-new game called South Of Midnight. In it, a modern-looking female warrior rocks up in a swamp asking where she could find a big old nasty monster. Mr Bones isn't very talkative, it seems, but in classic fashion, said monster then rises up from the swamp behind her. The trailer doesn't give much else away, but it will be a third-person action adventure set in a magic realist American South. No release date for this one yet, either.

Ubisoft's Star Wars game is called Outlaws

Cover image for YouTube video

The only thing we knew about Ubisoft's open world Star Wars game before today was that Ubisoft was making an open world Star Wars game. Now, we've got our first look at it, albeit in cinematic form rather than any actual gameplay. In this flashy reveal trailer for Star Wars Outlaws, we see scoundrel heroine Kay Vess escape from some bad dudes and head to her ship. A proper look will be coming tomorrow during Ubisoft's Forward showcase, and it will be launching in full in 2024.

33 Immortals is a new co-op roguelike from Thunder Lotus

Cover image for YouTube video

Also coming in 2024 is a new game from Thunder Lotus called 33 Immortals. This co-op action roguelike will see 33 (yes, 33) players come together to fight monster hordes and biff bad bosses. If you enjoyed Thunder Lotus' previous games Jotun and Sundered, you'll probably dig this too.

Pay Day 3 is stealing onto PC on September 21st

Cover image for YouTube video

After the intensely disappointing Crime Boss Rockay City this year, Pay Day 3 is back to show other bank heist games how it's done. Probably. Personally, I'm amazed any of these bank robbers can see where they're shooting with so many flashy effects going on, but I guess that's just the way of things these days. Can't claim you're 'next gen' unless you've got sparks blasting from every crevice now, can you? It's coming September 21st.

Atlus formally unveils Persona 3 Reload Remake

After accidentally leaking it during Geoff Fest on Thursday, Atlus gave us the first proper trailer for their Persona 3 remake, Persona 3 Reload. It's coming in early 2024 and will be on Game Pass just like the other Personas. Huzzah.

Avowed is finally coming in 2024

Cover image for YouTube video

It's been a hot minute since we last saw Avowed , but that changes today with a very flashy-looking gameplay trailer. Obsidian Entertainment's first person magic RPG looks like it's shaping up very nicely indeed based on this footage, and I know Bethesda are in the family and all that now as well, but seriously, Elder Scrolls 6 eat your heart out. If all goes well, Avowed will be coming out next year in 2024, on PC and Game Pass.

Sea Of Thieves is visiting Monkey Island on July 20th

Cover image for YouTube video

What a very pleasant surprise. In the next free chapter for Sea Of Thieves , you'll be visiting Monkey Island and hanging out with Guybrush Threepwood. Your adventure will begin on Mêlée Island, and Rare say this will be a "love-letter" to the classic adventure game series. You'll be able to play it solo or with pals, and there will be three Tall Tales coming to the game over the next three months. The first one arrives on July 20th.

Flight Sim gets a bunch of new jobs next year

Cover image for YouTube video

Loads of new jobs are coming to Microsoft Flight Simulator in 2024, and lots in particular for helicopter enthusiasts, including search and rescue, cargo transport, and air ambulances to name just a couple. There will also be mountain rescue missions, agricultural aviation flybys, skydive aviation, aerial construction jobs, industrial cargo transport and loads more. Seriously, the list is very long. You can even pretend you're in an episode of Succession with its VIP charter service flights. Just make sure Logan Roy doesn't get on your plane. Nobody wants that. And if that wasn't enough, there will also be a Dune tie-in when the new film comes out later this year.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade II is coming in 2024

Cover image for YouTube video

In a new trailer for Hellblade II , returning heroine Senua crawls into a creepy looking cave that may or may not also be the stomach of a giant nasty monster. Like the first game, Senua's journey deep into the belly of whatever this mysterious thing is will be accompanied by the voices of the Furies, articulating Senua's inner thoughts as the landscape shifts and morphs around her. They seem a bit nicer this time round, at least, so that's something. The trailer as a whole is a lot more enigmatic than ones we've seen before for Hellblade II, but hey, at least we got a vague release window this time. It will be out in 2024.

Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth has a very cheeky Ichiban

Cover image for YouTube video

Nope, it's not Like A Dragon 8 . It's another Yakuza game called Infinite Wealth. Goodness knows what it's about, or what kind of game it is. But it will star Like A Dragon's hero Ichiban, and from the looks of things a very naked Ichiban at that. He wakes up dazed and confused on a beach, seemingly in America this time, but until Sega tell us more, your guess is as good as mine on this one.

Fallout 76 is now on Game Pass

Cover image for YouTube video

It's Fallout 76 . On Game Pass. That's it. That's the headline.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess is a gorgeous new hack and slash from Capcom

Cover image for YouTube video

Holy heck Capcom, sign me the hell up for whatever this is. Steeped in Japanese mythology, this stunning-looking action game is one of the most colourful things I think I've ever seen in my entire life. It's called Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess, and from the looks of things you'll be hacking and slashing all manner of eye-popping demon lads in the mountains of Japan, like a realistic Okami. Consider me psyched. It will be a Day One Game Pass game too.

Forza Motorsport sure looks like more Forza Motorsport

Cover image for YouTube video

The official trailer for Forza Motorsport, everyone. Nope, I got nothing for this. I guess the cars look nice? It's coming out on October 10th.

Elder Scrolls Online's Necrom expansion got another trailer

Cover image for YouTube video

ESO Online's Necrom expansion came out earlier this week , but just in case you forgot or needed more persuading to give Bethesda's Elder Scrolls MMO a try, here's another trailer for it showing off its new locations, monsters and other mushroom-y based things you'll be facing.

Overwatch 2 really wants you to think it's cool

Cover image for YouTube video

A new trailer for seemingly the basic concept of Overwatch 2 was up next, although looking further into it, the trailer was actually about Overwatch 2: Invasion, a big new update coming on October 10th. It will also come to Game Pass on that day as well, bringing with it new Story missions, a new PvP mode and a new support hero.

Persona 5 Tactica is a new Persona strategy game

Cover image for YouTube video

What a time to be alive for Persona fans. Arriving on November 17th, Persona 5 Tactica is a new strategy RPG featuring the Phantom Thieves of Persona 5 along with some new faces. If you ever wanted to know what Persona might look like as XCOM-like, well, I think this might have the answer. It will also be on Game Pass.

Don't Nod are making a chill climbing game called Jusant

Cover image for YouTube video

Man alive, Don't Nod sure are busy bees these days, aren't they? Justant is a new climbing game with lovely cartoonish visuals that almost certainly won't be one for anyone who's afraid of heights. Then again, Xbox say it will be a "brand-new action-puzzle climbing game with meditative vibes", so maybe it won't be quite so vom-inducing as it first appears. In any case, we'll find out for sure whether we'll be losing our lunch over it later this Autumn.

The Chinese Room are back with oil rig horror Still Wakes The Deep

Cover image for YouTube video

Well I don't think I'd have pegged an oil rig to be a good location for a horror game, but yep, The Chinese Room have sold me on it. Coming in early 2024, Still Wakes The Deep looks like The Chinese Room will be returning to their Amnesia: Machine For Pigs vibes with this creepy first-person spook 'em up. According to the press release, you'll be playing an offshore oil rig worker who's fighting for their life in a vicious storm out in the North Sea. There's no exit, no one on your radio, and only a terrible something or other for company. Consider my interest piqued.

Cel-shaded adventure Dungeons Of Hinterberg revealed

Cover image for YouTube video

Coming in 2024, action adventure Dungeons Of Hinterburg looks like it has everything you could possibly want from a video game: there's monster fighting, puzzle solving, magical powers and a lovely Alpine setting that's seemingly tinged with an alternate fantasy reality. I'm intrigued by its visuals too, which look part cel-shaded and part rotoscoped. It certainty looks like a feast for the eyes, but whether it will be a feast for the thumbs remains to be seen. I guess we'll find out next year.

Keanu Reeves talks up Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Cover image for YouTube video

We already know Cyberpunk 2077 has an expansion called Phantom Liberty coming, but tonight we had a little live chat with Keanu Reeves about it, who was teed up to introduce the official trailer for it. But why are you wasting time reading this when you could be reading Ed's proper hands on thoughts of it ? He's been to play it in LA, so go on, off you pop. Then come back to read the rest of this. Phantom Liberty is coming out on September 26th.

Cities: Skylines 2 looks real neato and is coming October 24th

Cover image for YouTube video

City planners rejoice. Paradox didn't just reveal a snazzy new trailer for Cities: Skylines 2 this evening, but we've also got a release date: October 24th. And if all that wasn't enough, it will also be on Game Pass Day One. How very pleasant. I could tell you about its bridges, nuclear plants, road planning and housing layouts, but honestly, the trailer does a much better job of showing those off. Go and have another watch of it.

The makers of Persona have an incredible new RPG on the way

Cover image for YouTube video

I could not tell you what the heck was going on in the trailer for Metaphor: Re Fantazio, at least not without watching it several more times in a row, but the only things you really need to know is that it's a new RPG from the makers of Persona 3, Persona 4 and Persona 5, and it has the most incredible looking menu screens in existence. Seriously, just look at the things. That is some seriously gorgeous UI design right there. The battles don't look half bad, either. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to watch that trailer another dozen odd times to soak in those lovely menus.

Towerborne is a new co-op game from The Banner Saga devs

Cover image for YouTube video

Oh! A new game from the makers of The Banner Saga , Stoic, what a nice surprise. Towerborne is a co-op adventure game set in an ever-changing world according to the trailer, and it looks positively lovely. Very colourful. With some good looking frog lads, to boot. It certainly looks a lot more lighthearted than The Banner Saga, too, that's for sure, and quite the departure in genre too, as an interview with Xbox Wire reveals this will have seasonal updates that constantly add new things to do in the world over time. It's coming next year in 2024.

ClockWork Revolution is a new FPS from InXile

Cover image for YouTube video

Capping off the Xbox Games Showcase was a brand-new first-person action RPG from InXile Entertainment called Clockwork Revolution. It's being led by the creators of Arcanum, but is it me, or does its steampunk world of Avalon look suspiciously like an alternate reality cousin of Bioshock Infinite 's Columbia? Time travel is doing to be a major theme in Clockwork Revolution, as the evil Lady Ironwood appears to have been rewriting history behind the scenes thanks to a mysterious device she's got hold of. It's still quite early in development, InXile say, as it will be out "in due time", according to the trailer.

PlayStation Showcase May 2023: The Biggest Games And Announcements

These games and announcements had us on the edge of our seat during the show.

By Gabe Gurwin on May 24, 2023 at 3:11PM PDT

Sony's PlayStation Showcase aired on May 24, and it certainly brought the goods from both first-party and third-party studios. Alongside expected games like Spider-Man 2, the presentation gave us the surprise return of Marathon, a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3, and several live-service multiplayer games coming to PS5 and PC. We also saw a sneak peek at Sony's new hardware--not a console, but a special handheld system--and were very pleasantly surprised by a high-octane Chinese action game with Devil-May-Cry-like flair, Phantom Blade Zero. Here are the biggest games and announcements from the PlayStation Showcase.

The Metal Gear Solid series was heavily featured during the PlayStation Showcase, and the biggest announcement was Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater . A remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 for the PS5, the new game did not get a release date, but the pre-rendered trailer featured Naked Snake in all his glory, along with a look at the wildlife chowing down on each other. Alongside the remake announcement for PS5, the show also revealed the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection containing the original Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Metal Gear Solid 3. It's out this fall. What a thrill!

Spider-Man 2 gets extended gameplay

The biggest chunk of time was, as expected, allotted to Marvel's Spider-Man 2 . The slice we saw focuses on both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, with the former seemingly being influenced by a symbiote, complete with more violent abilities and a raspy voice. At the beginning of the trailer, the villain Kraven, in Predator fashion, selects New York City as his target for a worthy opponent, discovering Peter and Miles from his harrier while they're both trying to stop Lizard's rampage through the city. The gameplay footage gave us a good look at the two Spider-Men's abilities, ranging from an electric attack as Miles to Peter's devastating Venom-like moves. Spider-Man 2 releases for PS5 this fall.

Assassin's Creed Mirage makes us nostalgic

Confirming what we've heard over the last several months, Ubisoft showed off Assassin's Creed Mirage during the PlayStation Showcase. The gameplay trailer looked far more like the original Assassin's Creed in style than its successors, with protagonist Basim moving smoothly across rooftops, stealing from pockets, and delivering one-hit killing blows. The events look to set up what comes later with the character in the recent Assassin's Creed games, but expect to play a social stealth action-adventure game rather than an RPG when Assassin's Creed Mirage arrives on October 12.

Fairgames announced from Haven Studios

The first game from Jade Raymond's Haven Studios, which is a first-party PlayStation developer, Fairgames is a competitive "heist experience" game that is headed to both PS5 and PC. It kicked off the PlayStation Showcase with a pre-rendered trailer that showed off a group of ragtag "modern-day Robin Hood" types as they work to shift the balance of power by stealing from the extremely rich. It bears a slight resemblance to the Watch Dogs series, though it didn't appear that any of the heroes were using actual firearms, and the game's competitive multiplayer will feature "emergent sandbox" gameplay. No release date or window was offered, but it's coming to PS5 and PC.

Helldivers 2 is real, and it's spectacular

At long last, Helldivers 2 is finally a real thing. The sequel to the acclaimed original shoot-'em-up game looks to be taking things in a slightly different direction, as the gameplay trailer shown during the PlayStation Showcase made use of a traditional third-person perspective. What has not changed, however, is the enemy: big, nasty bugs. In glorious Starship Troopers fashion, the presentation is satirical and over the top, with the trailer coming via the Super Earth Ministry of Truth. It's possible that this has all been a giant misunderstanding and the bugs just want to be our friends. But probably not. The game arrives on PS5 and PC in 2023.

Ghostrunner 2 lets you drive a motorcycle down a skyscraper

The original Ghostrunner managed to combine speedrunning gameplay with Dishonored-like combat to brilliant effect, and its sequel Ghostrunner 2 looks to be kicking things up a notch in an unexpected way. As seen in the PlayStation Showcase trailer, you'll still be parkouring your way across cyberpunk environments and slashing enemies with your swords without stopping, but you'll also be riding motorcycles down skyscrapers. Not through the floors of a skyscraper, but down the literal side of one. It remains to be seen if developer One More Level can pull it off, but we're giving it the benefit of the doubt based on the original. It'll be out in 2023.

Phantom Blade Zero is a stylish-as-heck action game

One of the most impressive games to come out of the PlayStation Showcase is actually a "spiritual rebirth" of a mobile game never previously released outside of China. Phantom Blade Zero , developed by S-Game, stars an assassin named Soul, who must uncover the cure for a mysterious ailment in 66 days or perish forever. The game makes use of a semi-open world, and though the aesthetic may remind you of Team Ninja's work at first glance, the combat looks to draw more heavily on fast-moving action series like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. The trailer goes from 0 to 100 in no time, and we can't wait to see more.

Alan Wake 2 stars someone aside from Alan Wake, too

Alan Wake 2 finally has a release date, and it's not that far away. The game arrives on October 17, and in a new trailer, we see just how far Remedy Entertainment is going into horror territory with the game. First playing as an FBI agent moving through a small building, we see some sort of aggressive monster burst forward and attack, and we also see series writer Sam Lake playing a character who looks exactly like him. As the trailer concludes, the agent asks a bearded man for his name, to which he does not reply before the trailer concludes, but it's pretty clearly the title character.

Marathon is coming back, for real

Is this real life? Yes, Bungie has revived the Marathon franchise. For those who don't know, it served as the spiritual predecessor to Halo, but the studio is doing something a little different--and undoubtedly contentious--with the revival. The new game is a competitive extraction shooter for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and will support cross-play and cross-save. Battles take place on a moon installation just next to earth, and the cyberpunk art style feels like some of Bungie's more recent work has been an influence. Marathon will not feature a single-player campaign, and it appears to still be fairly early going on the project.

Project Q is a PS5 companion handheld

BREAKING: PlayStation unveils a new handheld cloud gaming device, bluetooth earbuds, and more! Get your first look here #PlayStationShowcase #ProjectQ pic.twitter.com/ObCJOPGfAv — GameSpot (@GameSpot) May 24, 2023

Sony is indeed creating a handheld device, but it's not a competitor to the Switch or even to the Steam Deck. Instead, the device currently known as Project Q is a streaming handheld that you can connect to your PS5 to play games on the go. It comes outfitted with a sizable screen and all the same controls as the DualSense controller--just split on each side. At the same time, Sony also announced new PlayStation earbuds, which bear a striking resemblance to Apple's Airpods and should be a good companion for the handheld. We'll hear more about it this year.

What exactly are they live streaming? Is this like when Nintendo would do a Treehouse and they’re showing you gameplay for like 20 minutes of each game? I wonder if Stalker 2 gets a release date this week. Looking forward to seeing more of Towerborne.

Here I thought it was gonna be either a stage show or a stream like we had in June.

I wonder what they are going to show from Stalker 2 and if a release date will be announced at all. And I see Alan Wake 2, interesting. Really thought Sony had the marketing on that.

And the Hellblade 2 stuff, sorry, but I sleep. Behind the scenes is something we’ve been a few times now. It’s time for more.

That’s what they write on Xbox Wire (it’s also in the OP)

No matter where you are in the world, we will bring gamescom 2023 to you, with three days of approx. 3 hour live streams direct from the Xbox booth. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, join Team Xbox and friends for a series of streams taking a deeper dive into some of the highly-anticipated games at gamescom 2023, with gameplay, developer chats and community segments to give you a flavour of the show.

So if I have to guess it’s probably, like you said, something like Nintendo Treehouse or Xbox E3 Showcase Extended.

E3 2023 schedule: Xbox, PlayStation, Ubisoft, Starfield, and more announcements for Summer Game Fest

Even with E3 2023 canceled, there are still plenty of presentations and showcases worth watching out for at Summer Game Fest

E3 2023 schedule

At a glance

Other potentials, not at e3 2023.

The E3 2023 schedule is full steam ahead, despite the fact that the physical E3 2023 event has been canceled . This would have been the first physical event in three years, however, the show was plagued with uncertainty as publishers failed to publicly commit to the show and then the show was eventually cancelled on March 30.

However, publishers and developers alike are keeping the E3 2023 season alive by still putting on showcases during the same period. That's what you'll find below, where we'll go over how the E3 2023 schedule is shaping up, from the big presentations from publishers like Xbox, Bethesda, and Ubisoft to other digital showcases such as the Future Games Show and Summer Game Fest.

E3 2023 news

E3 2023 has officially been canceled. While the industry was anticipating the return of the annual showcase, the ESA issued a statement on March 30 recognizing that "interested companies wouldn’t have playable demos ready and that resourcing challenges made being at E3 this summer an obstacle they couldn't overcome."

This would have been the first year where E3 was run by Reedpop – the people behind PAX, Comic Con, and other events – after the ESA announced that  E3 2023 would be both in-person and digital  after years of Covid-related disruption. Sadly, we learned on March 30, 2023, that Reedpop and the ESA canceled " both the digital and physical events for E3 2023 ".

However, that doesn't mean the E3 2023 schedule is dead - quite the opposite. We're going digital again, with names like Xbox, PlayStation, Ubisoft, and more doing showcases this year.

  • Xbox Summer Showcase will feature new games and updates on major titles
  • Xbox promises "much, much more" about Starfield at its summer showcase
  • Ubisoft is skipping E3 2023 after all and holding its own show instead
  • Nintendo confirms it's skipping E3 2023
  • Cyberpunk 2077 devs are showing off the Phantom Liberty DLC at Summer Game Fest
  • Ubisoft confirms Assassin's Creed Mirage and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora for June showcase

E3 2023 dates

When is e3 2023.

E3 2023 would have run from June 11 - 16 2023, with those dates including several different segments of activities.

Originally, Tuesday, June 13 to Thursday, June 15 was set to be E3 Business Days, reserved for industry professionals and the media. And Thursday, June 15 and Friday, June 16 would have been E3 Gamer Days, where the event would have be open to the public. Sadly, with the E3 2023 cancellation, this set of events will no longer continue.

However, we are still seeing developers and publishers holding events during this specific time window, with the E3 2023 schedule starting on June 8 and currently running through until June 13. You can see what's been confirmed so far below.

E3 2023 showcases

While E3 2023 has been canceled, that isn't to say that there aren't still events in the E3 2023 schedule that you shouldn't pay attention to. Between the Xbox and Bethesda conference, Ubisoft Forward, and Summer Game Fest , there are still plenty of game reveal opportunities to look forward to this June.

And you can catch up with all the announcements by heading to our E3 2023 coverage page, or hitting the links below for individual major showcase rounds-ups as they wrap:

Sony, Nintendo, and the others

PS5 controller

As for Sony and its PlayStation Studios, it hasn't done anything with E3 for a number of years now, instead choosing to set its own agenda with its State of Play live streams for its upcoming PS5 games . Instead, this year we got the May 24 PlayStation Showcase, which presented a number of game reveals and updates for PS5 titles.

It's looking unlikely there will be other showcases confirmed at such a late stage, but we'll of course keep you posted if that changes.

EA Play Live

The EA Play logo for EA's subscription service

EA Play Live didn't happen in 2022, with EA instead opting instead to update us on games as and when they're ready to be shown off – a little like what Sony does with its State of Play spotlights.

However, we're not yet sure what EA will do for E3 2023. EA Play has traditionally bucked the E3 trend, with the first few years seeing the event run in the days leading up to E3 week, and then 2021's version debuting in July - a full month after the traditional E3 window.

With Reedpop mentioning that the E3 2023 schedule will be running from June 11 with "partnered digital events", it might be that we see EA Play return to its usual slot.

Mario wearing a white top hat in Super Mario Odyssey

Nintendo has officially confirmed it will be skipping E3 2023 . As Nintendo tells  VentureBeat in a statement: "We approach our involvement in any event on a case-by-case basis and are always considering various ways to engage with our fans. Since this year’s E3 show didn’t fit into our plans, we have made the decision to not participate. However, we have been and continue to be a strong supporter of the ESA and E3." Rumor has it that Nintendo's skipping this year's event because it simply doesn't have enough games to show , but Nintendo itself hasn't confirmed this.

Peter Parker Spider-Man in Venom symbiote suit and Miles Morales spider-man in Spider-Man 2 gameplay trailer at PlayStation Showcase

Sony announced an hours-worth of news focused on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR 2 release schedule in a PlayStation Showcase on Wednesday . The show included new games from PlayStation Studios as well as third-party and indie game developers.

Plenty was announced during the event, including a bunch of PlayStation VR 2 titles, the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake , Bungie’s new game Marathon , and a bevy of indie games. Of course, Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2 headlined the event, giving us a closer look at the anticipated follow-up to its earlier Spidey titles.

Looking to catch up? We’ve got you.

Haven Studios, led by Jade Raymond, announced its first game, Fairgame$ , was the first game showcased at the PlayStation Showcase on Wednesday. PlayStation acquired the studio in March of last year. The teaser trailer didn’t show much gameplay, but focused on the game’s steal-from-the-rich vibes.

Helldivers 2

Next up in the showcase was Helldivers 2 from Arrowhead, a follow-up to the 2015 top-down shooter game. It’s coming to PlayStation 5 and Windows PC in 2023, and appears to keep the series’ original style of humor.

Immortals of Aveum

From Electronic Arts and Ascendant Studios, Immortals of Aveum is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC on July 20. The new trailer shown Wednesday gave us a look into both story and gameplay elements in the lead-up to its summer release date.

Ghostrunner 2

Ghostrunner 2 , published by 505 Games and One More Level, was announced early on in the PlayStation Showcase. It’s expected out this year on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, bringing action-forward first-person platforming to the new generation of consoles.

Phantom Blade 0

Phantom Blade 0 , from S-GAME, looks to be full of fast-paced, swords-based combat. No release date was given, but blood was shed.

Sword of the Sea

Sword of the Sea is from the developer of Abzu and The Pathless , and looks like a chill journey — literally, like Journey , but with skateboarding.

The Talos Principle 2

The Talos Principle 2 is expected out this year, a follow-up to the critically-acclaimed The Talos Principle , which was released in 2014. The series is known for its use of philosophy and puzzles to create something truly unique.

Nomada, the developer behind Gris , is working on a beautiful game starring a swordfighter and a white wolf with antlers — and looks to be a serious heartbreaker, judging from the trailer. It’s heading to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X in 2024.

Square Enix’s colorful shooter Foamstars promises like a huge foam party, with play clearly inspired by Splatoon .

The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire , published by Devolver Digital, is a super cute storybook game.

Teardown , like its name suggests, is all about breaking stuff. The voxel chaos, already out on PC, is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X this year.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Konami announced its Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake , known as Metal Gear Solid Δ , with a watery trailer. It’s coming to PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Towers of Aghasba

Towers of Aghasba is about restoring a beautiful, lush world — and, bonus, there are space whales.

Final Fantasy 16

Final Fantasy 16 ’s latest story trailer debuted at the PlayStation Showcase on Wednesday ahead of its June 22 release date.

Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2 , from Remedy Entertainment, is coming to PlayStation 5 and Windows PC on Oct. 17. It’s the highly-anticipated follow-up to Alan Wake , which was released way back in 2010.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is out on Oct. 12, Ubisoft announced during the PlayStation Showcase. The game stars Basim, and takes place before the events of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla , a game that he plays a significant role in.

Revenant Hill

Worker-owned cooperative The Glory Society announced Revenant Hill . The trailer was just a teaser, but the developer shared more information about the game — which has a similar aesthetic to Night in the Woods, which was created by the studios’ co-founders — in a blog on PlayStation website . Revenant Hill stars a cat named Twigs and the community that surrounds him.

Capcom showed off Dragon’s Dogma 2 during the PlayStation Showcase. There were lots of dragons and a lil’ dogma.

Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 is coming to PlayStation VR 2. No release date was given.

One of the more exciting prospects from the PlayStation Showcase is Marathon , Destiny 2 creator Bungie’s new, colorful shooter. Name sound familiar? That’s because Bungie published Marathon originally in 1994 on Mac.

Something called Concord is coming to PlayStation 5 in 2024, but the trailer didn’t give us much to work with. Looks colorful.

Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo is a movie now, coming in August. But... it’s about kids who play Gran Turismo . Twist. Expect lots of shiny cars.

Sony will release its own remote play-based handheld device, currently dubbed Project Q at the company. Basically, it’s a DualSense controller with an 8-inch screen in the middle. The device is expected out later this year.

PlayStation earbuds

What better to go with your new Sony handheld than some PlayStation earbuds?

Spider-Man 2

Kraven the Hunter kicked off Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2 trailer , showing the big bad guy. But one of the coolest thing is a Grand Theft Auto 5 -style character switch, letting the player change from Peter Parker to Miles Morales.

Correction: The original version of this story misidentified the developer behind the game Neva, and has been updated to correct that.

Modernizing Multiplayer Services for 'God of War: Ascension' (PS3)

  • Eric Gottesman, Senior Staff Devops Engineer

In 2013, Santa Monica Studio released "God of War: Ascension" on the PlayStation 3, a game unique to the franchise with its inclusion of multiplayer modes. When AWS announced the shutdown of EC2-Classic in 2022, the multiplayer environment for the game was set to be impacted, and the team had to lead, architect, and deploy a new solution in a time frame of about two weeks.

This presentation covers the transition from a set of static, unmanaged Amazon EC2 hosts to a fully containerized, Terraform-managed Amazon ECS on AWS Fargate cluster and the unexpected challenges that were faced. Learn about the value of maintaining servers for older games, best practices, and the challenges we're all likely to encounter in the future as more games depend on third-party services.

‘God of War Ragnarök’ Visual Scripting Solution

  • Sam Sternklar, Senior Programmer

As games become larger and larger, designers are tasked with scripting more complex systems and sequences. Programming departments across the industry are responsible for ensuring that the environments and APIs available to designers are simultaneously flexible, safe, and efficient.

For the development of God of War Ragnarök, Santa Monica Studio found its existing scripting solution lacking, and set out to alter both the tools available for scripting and how their designers approach scripting as a whole—and in the process give more freedom to designers and programmers alike.

This presentation discusses using event-based scripting, command deferral, and strong collaboration with designers in the context of creating a flexible, safe, and efficient scripting environment.

How to watch Ubisoft Forward 2023

Expect assassin’s creed, prince of persia, star wars, and more..

As Summer Game Geoff, aka Keigh3, aka The Keighleys, aka Summer Game Fest 2023 , winds down, there are a few more big developer presentations left, including today’s Ubisoft Forward 2023.

You can watch the livestream on Twitch or YouTube at 1PM ET / 10 AM PT / 6PM BST. Since we’re global here at The Verge , if we haven’t included your timezone, Ubisoft has got you covered, tweeting a bunch more global start times.

Ubisoft has already had a couple of reveals sprinkled throughout Summer Game Fest. Last week, we were treated to the world premiere of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown — a brand new side-scrolling platformer that harkens to the original 1989 Apple II Prince of Persia. Speaking of Prince of Persia , it’s unlikely that we see anything of Ubisoft’s Sands of Time remake since the developer recently announced that its development has been rebooted. But if we do, it’ll be a very nice surprise.

During the Xbox presentation, Ubisoft also revealed a first look at Star Wars: Outlaws , an open-world Star Wars game that takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Since the Xbox presentation only revealed Outlaws’ trailer, hopefully Ubisoft saved some blue-milkier details for its own showcase later today.

Skull and Bones , the game that refuses to die but also refuses to be launched , will probably also get an update today — probably another delay, but who knows.

And, of course, no Ubisoft presentation would be complete without a copious amount of Assassin’s Creed news. Mirage has a release date , we know a mobile game is in the works, and there are also the two other mainline Assassin’s Creed games, codenamed “Red” and “Hexe,” that might be revealed today.

The Ubisoft Forward livestream event begins at 1PM ET.

More from this stream Summer gaming events 2023: with E3 canceled, here’s what’s next

After winning every major Game of the Year award in 2023, Baldur's Gate 3 is now cleaning up in 2024 too

Larian's hit RPG claimed five wins at the 2024 BAFTA awards, including Best Game.

Swen Vincke accepts the Best Game award for Baldur's Gate 3 at the 2024 BAFTA Game Awards

We said in January that Baldur's Gate 3 had completed its Game of the Year sweep by claiming the top honor in the 2023 Steam Awards. What we did not anticipate is that it would continue kicking ass through 2024. Maybe we should have been a little more forward-thinking on that one, because Larian's D&D RPG just claimed the Best Game title, and four others, at the 2024 BAFTA Awards .

Baldur's Gate 3 beat out a slate of very impressive contenders for the win including Alan Wake 2, Dave the Diver, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The trophy will sit nicely alongside earlier Game of the Year hardware taken home from The Game Awards, the Golden Joysticks, and the Steam Awards. It's a genuinely remarkable stretch of domination for a game I honestly thought might have a shot at doing business with oldster RPG players and fans of Larian's past work when it was announced in 2019. A gross underestimation, as it turns out.

Baldur’s Gate 3 takes home 5 awards across Narrative, Music, Performer in a Supporting Role, Best Game, and the Player’s Choice award at the #BAFTAGamesAwards! We are so proud of our entire team - none of this would have been possible without their hard work and dedication!

Along with the Best Game title, Baldur's Gate 3 also took home wins for best music, narrative, performer in a supporting role—specifically, that went to Andrew Wincott for his portrayal of the charming devil Raphael —and the EE Players' Choice Award, the only BAFTA award voted on by players.

Larian boss Swen Vincke was somewhat more restrained in his acceptance speech than he was at GDC, when he pointedly blamed "greed" among game industry executives for " fucking this thing up for so long ." Instead, he took the more traditional awards show route of thanking family, friends, and everyone who worked on the game.

"There's really a truckload of partners who helped us make this game," he said. "We didn't do this on our own. I once counted, I came to over 2,000 people that worked on Baldur's Gate 3, which is incredible, over six years." He also made a point of calling out the Baldur's Gate 3 actors, "who spent so much time in those suits."

Baldur's Gate 3 wins Best Game | BAFTA Games Awards 2024 - YouTube

Despite being a story-based RPG that came out more than eight months ago, Baldur's Gate 3 remains one of the most popular games on Steam: There are at this moment more than 77,000 people playing it, good enough for the 12th spot on Steam's Most Played chart .

And despite that monstrous, runaway success, Larian has officially and emphatically said its time with the famed RPG series is over: It will continue to support Baldur's Gate 3 (and a new hotfix actually just dropped yesterday) but Vincke said in March that the studio will not be making any DLC or sequels .

Larian is finished with Baldur's Gate 3, but it may not be finished collecting awards: The game is nominated in multiple categories, including (of course) Game of the Year, in the 2024 Gayming Awards , which will take place in June. Will the midpoint of 2024 finally signal the end of Baldur's Gate 3's genuinely awesome demolition of its rivals? At this point I have to imagine that every other game studio on the planet is hoping so.
