Here you’ll find all our Year 5 maths worksheets, and Year 5 maths tests that are suitable for use during classroom lessons and as homework.
- What to expect from our Year 5 Maths worksheets
These KS2 maths worksheets cover every part of the Year 5 primary maths curriculum, to help your children practise and gain confidence in their understanding ahead of Year 6 and the KS2 SATs . Their focus is on retrieval practice – going over topics that children should already have covered and helping them strengthen their knowledge and understanding.
Most of our worksheets come in pdf format, and all of them are printable. But if you’re running out of printer ink, they can be viewed online too.
Every Year 5 maths test or worksheet comes with its own answer sheet, and guidance from the National Curriculum is included wherever it might be needed (for example, if there might be more than one correct answer for a question). Some worksheets also include model answers to help children break down the best way to solve a problem.
Note: The National Curriculum does not specify any place value teaching for Year 5. However this is often a good time to begin revising the topic (among others) in preparation for the KS2 SATs. Have a look at these place value worksheets as part of your revision.
Similarly, addition and subtraction work is largely an extension of what was covered in previous years. Take a look at our collection of addition and subtraction worksheets for practice materials for these topics.

Our Year 5 maths tests includes two assessments – one arithmetic paper and one reasoning paper – with SATS style questions created by our curriculum experts, answers and a mark scheme with detailed explanations of how to solve each question.
Both papers should take about one hour to complete, and cover every part of the curriculum, from place value to geometry and 3d shapes. This makes them useful for checking children’s overall understanding of the maths they’ve learned in Year 5, as well as providing them with exam practice.

The beginner's guide to primary-school homework
What’s the point of homework?
For many families, homework is a nightly battle, but primary schools set it for a variety of reasons. ‘It helps to consolidate the skills that are being taught at school, and provides children with additional revision opportunities,’ explains head teacher Steph Matthews of St Paul’s CofE School, Gloucester .
‘It also gives children an opportunity to explore learning in an unstructured setting, encouraging them to be independent and follow their own lines of enquiry.’ In addition, homework creates a partnership between school and family, giving parents an insight into what their child is learning.
How much homework should my child get in primary school?
In the past, the Department for Education advised that Key Stage 1 children should do an hour of homework each week, rising to half an hour per night in Key Stage 2. This advice was scrapped in 2012, giving schools more freedom, but many still follow the old guidelines.
In Reception , formal homework is rarely set. However, children are likely to bring home books to share with the family, first reading books, and/or keywords to learn.
In Years 1 and 2 , children are likely to have one or two tasks per week. This could be literacy or numeracy worksheets (for example an exercise where children have to compare the weights of different household items), a short piece of writing (such as a recount of a school trip) or work relating to the class topic (find out five facts about the Great Fire of London ).
In Years 3 and 4 , most schools set two homework activities each week: typically, one literacy (such as a worksheet on collective nouns, or a book review ) and one numeracy (a worksheet on bar charts).
In Years 5 and 6 , children may have two or three pieces of homework each week. ‘The amount begins to increase to prepare children for SATs and the transition to secondary school,’ says Steph. These activities might include maths worksheets, researching a topic, book reviews and grammar exercises.
Alongside formal homework tasks, most children bring home reading scheme books from Reception onwards, with weekly spellings and times tables from Year 1 or 2.
Learning logs and homework challenges
Not all schools rely on handing out worksheets. Learning logs or challenges are becoming more popular: children are given a folder of suggested activities – from writing a poem to building a model castle – and must choose a certain number to complete throughout the term.
Other schools ensure that homework ties in with the current class topic. ‘We have a themed approach, and set homework activities that give opportunities to explore the topic in a fun way, for example, designing a method of transport that Phileas Fogg could use to travel the world,’ explains Steph.
Modern homework methods
Unsurprisingly, technology is playing an increasingly important part in homework. Some schools use online reading schemes such as Bug Club , where teachers allocate e-books of the appropriate level, or subscription services like SAM Learning to set cross-curricular tasks.
A growing number also set homework electronically , with children logging into the school website to download their task.
What if the homework is too much – or too hard?
If you feel your child is overloaded with homework, speak to the teacher. ‘Forcing children to complete homework is counterproductive, because they come to perceive it as a chore,’ says Rod Grant, head teacher of Clifton Hall School, Edinburgh . ‘This makes learning appear boring, arduous or both, and that is really dangerous, in my view.’
Most schools publish their homework policy on the school website , telling parents exactly what to expect. ‘Teachers should make their expectations very clear in terms of deadlines and how long it should take, and should also differentiate tasks to suit the level of the pupil,’ adds Steph.
No homework at all?
If your child doesn’t get any homework, you may feel out of touch with his learning, or concerned that he isn’t being challenged. But there are good reasons why some schools don’t set homework, or set it only occasionally, says Rod. ‘Although homework can be beneficial, family life tends to suffer as a result of it being imposed,’ he explains. ‘ If a school isn’t providing homework, there’s plenty that parents can do at home instead : reading with their children, doing number puzzles on car journeys, using online resources, and so on.’
Parents may also worry that without doing homework, children won’t develop study habits for later life. ‘There is genuinely no need for a six-year-old to get into a routine of working at home; there’s time to learn that later,’ Rod advises. ‘Parents need to relax and encourage children to love learning – and that comes when learning is fun, relevant and engaging, not through doing homework tasks that are unchallenging, or secretarial in nature.’

Free Homeschooling Resources in UK [For 11-16 year Olds]
If you have taken the decision to homeschool your child, you might be worrying about how much it will cost. While there are loads of great paid resources out there, there are also plenty of excellent free homeschooling resources too. Below are a range of options for UK children roughly 11-16 years old which equates to school years 7-11 ( Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 which is GCSE level).
The post is split into two sections, first are resources that are completely free and second are resources where there is a mix of free and paid content. Each of those sections is then separated into Key Stage 3 and GCSE level.
If you’re looking for free resources for younger children have a look at this post on homeschooling free resources for 5-11 year olds .
A note on language: In my posts, I refer to “homeschooling”. In the UK, the correct term for educating your child at home is “home Educating”, with homeschooling referring to a child doing work at home that has been set by school. I use the the term homeschooling in my posts because many people who are new to home educating will use the term homeschooling when searching online and I want to make sure they can find the information.
Key Stage 3 (Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9) Free Homeschooling Resources
The resources in this section are available completely free with no limits on use.
BBC Bitesize at KS3
BBC Bitesize for Key Stage 3 offers a great range of free resources. Bitesize was originally designed for schooled children so the topics reflect that, covering all of the non practical subjects that would be studied at school in years 7-9.
They include:
- Science (as well as sections for the separate sciences, biology, chemistry and physics)
- Computer Science
- Religious Studies
They also include some content specific to Wales for Citizenship and Humanities.
The content is a mixture of written information to read, graphics to look at, short videos and quizzes to check understanding. A few topics also have games.
BBC Bitesize will suit learners who are happy to do a fair amount of reading as part of their learning.
BBC Teach at KS3
The difference between BBC Bitesize and BBC Teach is that while Bitesize is designed for learners to use at home, BBC teach is designed for teachers to use in the classroom. This means that the written content is less easy to read and layout is less child friendly.
Where BBC Teach does excel is video. There are a large range of video clips for lots of different subjects so while you probably wouldn’t be able to leave your child to work through BBC Teach on their own, it can be great source of resources if you as a parent have time to find them.
BBC Teach also covers some topics Bitesize doesn’t, here is a list of the subjects covered at KS3:
- English Language
- English Literature
- German Spanish
- Design and Technology
- Art and Design
Oak National Academy for KS3
Oak National Academy was set up by the Government during the pandemic to provide a way for children to learn at home. Some of the content has now been moved to a different website called Continuity Oak so if you click on a section in Oak National Academy and it is empty, try checking Continuity Oak.
For most subjects, Oak provides a video lesson of a teacher explaining the subject and setting work as they go along. Some also have worksheets and quizzes. Videos are usually short, 15-30 minutes, but many ask learners to pause to complete activities so they will likely take closer to an hour to complete.
At Key Stage 3 the following subjects are offered on Oak National Academy:
- Citizenship
On Continuity Oak you will find:
Khan Academy
Khan Academy is an American website that has a huge range of learning resources for lots of different subjects. The only difficulty is that being an American site, it doesn’t match up with the UK National Curriculum.
If you have chosen not to follow the National Curriculum (not having to being one of the benefits of homeschooling ) and are just looking for good learning resources, Khan Academy is a great option. If you are following the National Curriculum, you can still use Khan Academy, it will just take a bit more work to find the things you need.
When judging the level of work on Khan Academy, it is useful to know that in terms of age, Grade 1 equates to the England’s Year 2, Grade 2 equates to England’s Year 3 and so on. This means that for Key Stage 3, you’re looking at grades 6 – 8.
Khan Academy mostly covers Maths, English and Science with a some Humanities and Economics content.
GCSE Level (Year 10 and Year 11) Free Homeschooling Resources
If you are studying for GCSEs (Key Stage 4), here are some completely free resources you can use.
If you want to know how GCSEs work for home educators, have a look at this post on How Homeschoolers take GCSEs .
BBC Bitesize at GCSE
Bitesize for GCSEs covers a range of exam boards however, if your child is taking IGCSEs (which many homeschoolers do to avoid practical elements and coursework, one of the disadvantages of homeschooling ) they may not have the exact syllabus you need.
For many subjects there is a degree of crossover so you may still find relevant resources, you’ll just need to check your syllabus first and see if Bitesize offers anything relevant. The exam boards vary for each subject so you’ll need to visit the page, click on the subject you are interested in and then you’ll see a list of exam boards.
At GCSE level, Bitesize covers the following subjects:
- Combined Science
- Music and PE
There are also some subjects specific to Wales and Ireland.
BBC Teach for GCSE Level Work
Unlike Bitesize, BBC Teach doesn’t provide resources specific to a particular exam board so it is a case of looking to see if it has anything on the topic you want to cover. As at Key Stage 3, there are some great video clips and while it is still quite wordy, its more likely a learner at Key Stage 4 would be able to read through the information provided alone.
The following subjects are covered:
- Media Studies
Oak National Academy for GCSE Work
As noted in the Key Stage 3 section, some of the resources from Oak National Academy have been moved to Continuity Oak . There are also some resources that are no longer available, the main subject that is impacted by this at GCSE level is modern foreign languages where much of the content has been removed.
The format for KS4 work on Oak National Academy is the same as that for KS3, with video lessons along with quizzes and some worksheets.
The following subjects at GCSE can be found on Oak National Academy:
- French (parts missing)
- Spanish (parts missing
- German (parts missing)
- Religious Education
These subjects are available on Continuity Oak:
As a US website, Khan Academy doesn’t have content specifically tailored to GCSE but you may still be able to find some relevant content for Maths and Science which it covers up to High School Level. Bear in mind that in the US, High School covers up to age 18.
If you feel your child needs more support than free resources can offer, have a look at this list of online GCSE course providers .
Key Stage 3 Homeschooling Resources with Free Elements
The resources below are useful for years 7, 8 and 9 (roughly ages 11-14) and while you have to pay for full access, they all offer some access for free.
Free EdPlace Resources for 11-14 Year Olds
EdPlace is essentially a revision site so while it won’t teach your learner any new material, it can be a great way of testing current knowledge and practicing skills.
EdPlace is aligned to the National Curriculum so useful if your intention is to follow it. It covers Maths, English and Science.
With a free account your child can do up to 5 activities a month. While this isn’t a great deal it can add variety to your schedule, which is how we have used it. What is really useful is, as a parent, you can preview as many activities as you want to help you decide which 5 activities will most benefit your child.
Free IXL Resources for Years 7, 8 and 9
Like EdPlace, IXL is a revision site and aligned to the National Curriculum. For free use you are limited to 10 questions a day and then it will cut you off. You don’t need an account to do the 10 free questions, you just find the work you want to do and get on with it.
The downsides are that you can’t preview work to help you decide what your child should do and because you don’t have an account if you’re using it for free, you can keep track of what has been done. Like EdPlace, it’s useful if you want to mix things up a bit.
Free Seneca Resources for Key Stage 3
Seneca has a mix of free and premium resources available. The majority of the free resources for Key Stage 3 relate to English with a few on Maths, Sciences and Humanities. There are a lot more on those subjects if you pay for premium.
You can set up a free account for yourself as a parent and one for you child and then link them. You can then keep track of completed work. Seneca is a good option for English as it offers more at KS3 than Edplace or IXL.
Finding Free Twinkl Resources for 11-14 year Olds
While many of the resources on Twinkl require you to have a subscription, there are still a good number that you can access without paying, you just need to sign up for a free account.
The easiest way to find relevant resources is to click on the 11-16 option at the top of the homepage and then select the subject that you want at KS3. You can then use of the filter on the lefthand menu to limit it to free resources.
The other option is to put “Free Resources” into the search box and then filter the results by age. This isn’t foolproof however and will still bring up some results that need a subscription, usually because they have the word “free” in the resource name or description.
While Twinkl has lots of great resource, the main problem I have encountered as a home educator is that, because they are originally designed for teachers, answers aren’t included. While this wasn’t a problem in the younger years, it has proved to be one at secondary school age.
Twinkl also has a new section called “Beyond” dedicated to secondary school resources but they only offer a sample pack for those with the free account.
It is also worth noting that the Beyond sample pack is pretty much the only Twinkl free resource available for GCSE level.
GCSE Homeschooling Resources with Free Elements
These resources all offer some free GCSE level content.
Free EdPlace for GCSEs
EdPlace is designed to be a revision tool so is great for practicing GCSE work. At GCSE EdPlace offers English Literature, English Language, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Like Bitesize, each subject is separated by exam board so if you are doing IGCSEs you may need to dig around a bit to find the topics you need.
The free account can give you a way to track what’s being done and you could also give your child access to your parent account to allow them to explore resources before deciding what would be best for them to practice.
Free IXL GCSE Resources
IXL covers GCSE level English and Maths and has a large number of topics within each. They are not linked to specific exam boards which may actually make it easier to find the topic you are after.
You’re still limited to 10 questions a day but it could add some variety to revision.
Seneca Free Resources for GCSEs
As with the years 7, 8 and 9 work, a lot of Seneca’s content at GCSE level is focussed on English however there is more on other subjects at GCSE than KS3. There is a fair amount of Science and Maths as well as some other subjects.
Much of what is there is tailored to a specific exam board and you can filter by subject and exam board to find what you need.
If you’re wondering about the price of taking GCSEs, have a look at this post on the homeschooling GCSE cost .
Know Any Other Resources?
Hopefully that has given you some ideas for free homeschooling resources you can use. If you know of others, please do share them in the comments and I will add them to the post.

Hello. Im thinking of taking my child out of school education. She struggles so much socially and the environment isnt a happy one for her. She currently has an EHCP, which im pretty sure doesnt have an effect if out of a school environment. She is currently in year 10. She struggles with subjects as processing information is hard for her but she’s definitely improved over the high school years. I think home schooling may help her as there are no distractions of other children being mean or disruptive behaviour in class which will help her concentrate. If we go ahead with this she would need only do the basics. English language, maths and science. I feel that would be enough for her to study. She enjoys reading so thats not a problem and she can work on her own pretty independently. Im interested in the free classes but interested to know the cost of what it would be as an ongoing cost. College isnt for heidi so can she continue the subjects for years 12 and 13 too? Many thanks Helen Ecott
Hi Helen, it does sound like home education might be a better for her.
This post gives some information on the costs of home educating: https://homeedlife.co.uk/how-much-does-it-cost-to-homeschool-in-the-uk/
You can certainly carry on home education after 16 in any way that suits her, this post explains post 16 options: https://homeedlife.co.uk/post-16-options-for-home-educators/

LONDON (AP) — A man wielding a sword attacked members of the public and police officers in a northeast London suburb Tuesday, killing a 14-year-old boy and injuring four other people, British authorities said.
A 36-year-old man was subdued with a stun gun and arrested on suspicion of murder in a residential area near Hainault subway station, police said. The violence wasn’t being treated as terror-related or a “targeted attack.”
Police said that the 14-year-old died at a hospital from his injuries. Two police officers were hospitalized for stab wounds. Two other people were also injured.
Chief Supt. Stuart Bell described the incident as “truly horrific.”
AP AUDIO: Sword-wielding man attacks passersby in London, killing a 14-year-old boy and injuring 4 others.
At a news conference, Police Commander Stuart Bell says a suspect who attacked London passersby with a sword has been arrested.
“I cannot even begin to imagine how those affected must be feeling,” he said outside the homes in east London where the attack happened.
The Metropolitan Police said they were called early Tuesday to reports of a vehicle being driven into a house in a residential street and people being stabbed.
Witness videos broadcast on British media showed a man in a yellow hoodie holding a long sword or knife walking near houses in the area. One video showed police officers yelling “Drop the sword” and “Lock your doors!” as they chased the suspect, who was seen climbing over fences and into people’s gardens.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan said police don’t believe there was a threat to the wider community.
“We are not looking for more suspects,″ he said. ”This incident does not appear to be terror-related.”
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the incident was “shocking,” adding: “Such violence has no place on our streets.”
King Charles III said his thoughts and prayers were with the family of the young victim, and he saluted the courage of emergency workers, Buckingham Palace said.
Transport for London said that Hainault station was closed because of a police investigation in the area.
Five-month-old baby dies after 'neglect incident' at Legoland Windsor
A 27-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of neglecting a child to cause unnecessary injury after the tragedy on Thursday.
Tuesday 7 May 2024 17:39, UK
A five-month-old baby who went into cardiac arrest at Legoland Windsor last week has died in hospital.
The child was in a critical condition following the incident at around 1pm on Thursday 2 May.
A 27-year-old woman from Witham, Essex, was arrested on suspicion of neglecting a child to cause unnecessary injury on Friday.
The woman is on police bail until 26 July.
Police have said they are not looking for any other suspects and have asked the public to "avoid speculation about the incident and to respect the boy's family at this deeply upsetting time".
The baby boy died in hospital on Sunday, police said today.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Zoe Eele, of the Child Abuse Investigation Unit, said: "We are investigating a distressing incident involving a very young child at Legoland Windsor earlier this week.
"Firstly, our thoughts are with the family of the boy who sadly died in hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest. We are supporting them as best we can at this extremely difficult time.
"We are working closely with the team at Legoland Windsor Resort but would like to speak to anyone who may have information about this incident, specifically anyone who was queueing for the Coastguard HQ boat ride between around 11.30am and 12:45pm."

Complaints, objections swept aside as 15-year-old girl claims record for 101-pound catfish
Not everyone seems happy about Jaylynn Parker’s blue catfish record , but when has universal happiness ever been achieved in any doings involving the human race?
Suffice to say that, after displaying a few loose hairs initially judged as made for splitting, the 101.11-pound blue cat taken from the Ohio River on April 17 at New Richmond in Clermont County was attested by the organization that makes such calls as the biggest ever landed in the state.
Replaced last weekend in the all-tackle category of the record book minded by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio was the 96-pound blue cat fished from the Ohio River in 2009 by Chris Rolph of Williamsburg.
How’s this for serendipity? Parker’s fish was weighed on the same scale as Rolph’s.
Outdoors: 15-year-old's record catfish could bring change to rules
Here’s more: Rolph’s fish was identified not from personal inspection by a wildlife biologist as stipulated by rule but by photograph, same as the fish landed by the 15-year-old Parker.
That established, a blue catfish doesn’t have many look-alikes, making a photograph fairly compelling evidence.
So was swept away one potential objection, that a fishery biologist didn’t inspect the fish and declare it to be what everyone knew it was. Nor, as the rules specified, did anyone from the five-member Fish Record Committee get a look at the fish before it was released alive.
Someone had raised a doubt about added weights, although three Ohio Division of Wildlife officers sent to examine the legality of the catching probably wouldn’t have missed an attempt at shenanigans.
Two main differences in the catching and handling of the last two record blue catfish figured into the noise about recognition.
Rolph’s fish was taken with a rod and reel, Parker’s on a bank line tied to a float dangling bait. Both methods are legal as long as requirements written into Ohio’s fishing rules are followed, which in both cased they were.
The other departure was that Rolph’s fish ended up dead, while Parker’s is somewhere doing pretty much what it did before it was caught. Parker’s fish’s timeline didn’t include a trip on ice to where it could be checked out.
Good on her.
People demanding a category differentiating fish caught on a bank line from fish caught by rod and reel didn’t get their wish. Still, depending on who’s talking, a few rule tweaks could yet happen.
NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Dry promotions are on the rise – this is what you need to know

Your grandparents may have had a job for life, but UK workers are now firmly in their job hopping era, following the USA’s lead.
There, government data has found that American adults have held down an average of 12 jobs by the age of 55.
Workers aren’t just job hopping: they are also switching careers, according to a report from the World Economic Forum (WEF). It says that “Employment experts predict the rapid pace of change in employment will mean individuals will need to become lifelong learners to prepare them for multiple career changes during their working lives”.
WEF’s Future of Jobs Report 2023 found that two-fifths of the core skills workers have today will be disrupted by technological change by 2027––AI is just one example. Half of all workers’ core skills will need to be updated every five years, the report also found.
Nowadays, many Brits aren’t climbing a traditional career ladder, with a consistent and strong upward trajectory. Instead, they’re embracing “squiggly” careers, aka job paths with twists and turns, offering the ability to explore many different areas and roles.
Thanks to an employment environment where recent layoffs have come in their tens of thousands across the UK tech and finance sectors, workers are also now less likely to idealise their job or the company they work for.
And with lots of additional pressure on employees in the face of rising economic uncertainty, the cost of living crisis, inflation and fears of a looming recession, many workers want to make hay while the sun still shines.

Promotion prospects
For lots of UK employees, that looks a lot like getting a job promotion. After all, if you work hard, smash your goals and meet (or exceed) expectations, surely you should be a shoe-in for a better title, more responsibilities and of course, a 10% to 15% pay rise.
Like many things in life, it just isn’t that simple.
There can be many reasons why your company isn’t offering promotions, ranging from a lack of available opportunities, to restructuring, cost-cutting, or a strong bias towards external candidates.
And something else that is on the rise is “dry promotions”––aka your boss giving you a new title and more work, but no additional cash. According to a Korn Ferry report , 37% of firms handed out dry promotions last year.
That’s an increase from 32% in 2021, and is “a trend that is likely to continue,” says Brian Bloom, vice president of global benefits and mobility operations at Korn Ferry.
So should you accept one? Your boss may explain that this is a way to reward and recognise your abilities by giving you a professional development opportunity, but it won’t be surprising if you see things a little differently.
All isn’t lost if this is the only route to advancement you’re offered. Weigh up whether it will genuinely help your career advance, ask if there is anything your boss can offer, like more holiday days, a better pension contribution or monthly expenses.
That might be enough for you to take a dry promotion, with a clear eye on the future, but if you think you need to make a move to a new company in order to progress, then you’ll discover thousands of opportunities with employers all across the UK on the Metro Job Board . Discover three of those below.
