What is an ITIN, and how does it work?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a 9-digit number the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issues to people filing a tax return who are not U.S. citizens and who do not have or are not eligible for a Social Security number. You can only use your ITIN for tax reporting purposes.

How to file your federal tax return using an ITIN

When you file your federal tax return, you will enter your ITIN in the same space where the form asks for a Social Security number.

As an ITIN holder, you may be eligible to claim a child or dependent care tax credit when you file. Learn about the:

What to do if your ITIN is lost or expired

Getting an itin.

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit number issued by the IRS to be used on a tax return.

You need this number if you’re required to file a tax return and you don’t have and aren’t eligible to get a Social Security number (SSN). For example: If you’re a foreign national, regardless of your immigration status, you must apply to the IRS for an ITIN if you have a U.S. tax filing or reporting requirement. Even if you don’t have a tax return filing requirement, you may need an ITIN to file a return to receive a refund for any 2021 child tax credit for which you are eligible.

What do I need to know?

You will usually file an ITIN application, Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number , with your first tax return, which  you must file as a paper return , not electronically. There are some exceptions to apply for an ITIN without also submitting a tax return – generally, when you’re claiming the benefits of a tax treaty, or when third parties (like a bank or other financial institution) need your ITIN for their reporting. All the exceptions are listed in the ITIN application instructions .

Documentation needed to apply for an ITIN

  • Support your claim of foreign status.

What should I do?

Apply for an ITIN

The application — Form W-7 ,  Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number   — asks details about why you need an ITIN and requires you to send in certain documents to prove your foreign status and identity.

Documentation needed

The documents must:

At least one document must contain your photograph. A current passport would meet all these requirements and is the only document you can submit on its own. Otherwise, you must send two documents.

The IRS has a long list of documents or combinations of documents that can show your status and identity. All are listed in the Form W-7 instructions .

All documents must be originals or certified copies. A certified copy is one that the original issuing agency provides, and certifies as an exact copy of the original, and contains an official stamped seal from the agency. Certifying Acceptance Agents and many Taxpayer Assistance Centers, discussed below, may also certify certain documents.

Many applicants have reported the IRS lost their passports or other valuable and hard-to-replace identification documents. Consider getting certified copies or using one of the application methods listed below, rather than mailing original identification documents to the IRS.

Exceptions to the rule requiring original documents or certified copies include:

  • Military dependents and spouses;
  • Nonresident aliens claiming tax treaty benefits and not filing a tax return; and
  • Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) participants.

Submitting the application

Applying in person

You can apply for an ITIN by bringing your completed forms and documentation to any  IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center office . The staff can help you complete an application and will submit it for processing.

Certain offices can verify passports and national identification cards and return them immediately. A list of these in-person Document Review Taxpayer Assistance Centers  is available on IRS.gov. This allows you to avoid mailing your original documents, or certified copies, to the IRS.

Applying through an Acceptance Agent

Acceptance Agents  (AAs) and Certifying Acceptance Agents (CAAs) can help you complete applications.

The advantage to using Certifying Acceptance Agents (CAAs) is that for primary and secondary applicants (like a spouse), the CAA can certify that your documents are original and make copies to send to the IRS. That way, you won’t have to mail your originals or copies certified by the issuing agency.

NOTE:  CAAs must send original or certified copies of the documents to the IRS for all dependents; however, CAAs can authenticate the passport and birth certificate of a dependent.

Applying by mail

If none of the in-person options work for you, you can still submit your application by mail. We strongly suggest that you get certified copies of all your documents instead of sending originals. We also suggest you send the application and documents by certified mail so you’ll have evidence of when you filed the application and where you sent it.

NOTE: Make sure you send your IRS Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and your tax return to the address under Where to Apply in the Form W-7 instructions .

If you must send original documents, you can send the IRS a prepaid express envelope with your application to have them returned faster.

Thoroughly read the Form W-7 instructions . Certain identification documents have very specific requirements about what they must include (For example: School records and medical records). If your documents don’t meet these requirements, even if they’re official records or your only records, the IRS will reject your ITIN application.

Applicants outside the United States

Applicants outside the United States should call 267-941-1000 (not a toll-free call) or apply through a  Certified Acceptance Agent.   Additional information  is available to tell you how to get an ITIN while abroad.

How will this affect me?

If you’re required to file a tax return and aren’t eligible for a Social Security number, you need to apply for an ITIN (See the What should I do? section, above).

What is an ITIN?

How long does the ITIN application take to process?

After submitting your application, it usually takes 7-14 weeks to receive your ITIN. During the tax season (January – April), processing times may be longer. If you haven’t received your ITIN Assignment letter after 14 weeks, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to check your application status.

Do I need to renew my ITIN each year?

An ITIN is valid for 5 years. Once you receive your ITIN Assignment letter, it is important to keep your information updated. You must notify the IRS of any changes to personal details and be aware of your ITIN’s expiration date.

You may need a copy of EIN letter from IRS on various occasions to confirm your tax ID to your bankers, financers, and vendors. The IRS issues this letter in Form CP 575 within eight to 10 weeks of assigning you an Employer Identification Number (EIN). If you lose or misplace the original confirmation letter, you can request the IRS for a verification letter, which would for all purposes, substitute the original letter or certificate.

Why Do You Need an EIN?

An EIN, or an Employer Identification Number, is a unique nine-digit number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to a business entity. An EIN is for a business what a Social Security number (SSN) is for an individual. Businesses use this ID while filing tax returns, obtaining business licenses and industrial permits, opening bank accounts, and for various other purposes like submitting Form 1099 for contracting work.

Sole proprietors may want to obtain an EIN in order to avoid using their Social Security number for business purposes. Banks usually insist on providing EIN details for opening a bank account in the name of your business. Sometimes, your investors and vendors may also ask for your EIN.

EIN Confirmation Letter

On approval of your EIN application, the IRS mails you a confirmation letter within eight to 10 weeks of assigning you an EIN. This confirmation letter is known as Form CP 575 and is mailed to the address mentioned in your Form SS-4 application.

If you happen to lose or misplace your original EIN confirmation letter , which is typically a tax ID certificate, you can get an EIN verification letter only from the IRS. This verification letter serves the purpose of the original confirmation letter you received from the IRS. Thus, if you lose your EIN confirmation letter, you may need to obtain a verification letter to open a bank account or to confirm your EIN to your vendors.

How to Get an EIN Verification Letter From the IRS

Although it would be enough to know your EIN for conducting your daily business, you may need a copy of your EIN confirmation letter on several occasions. Before you start searching for the letter, know that this letter would be in Form CP 575. So, if you have Form CP 575 with you, you already have the confirmation letter. The IRS typically mails this form within 10 weeks of approving your EIN application .

If you can't trace your confirmation letter, you should put together some relevant information so that the retrieval process becomes easier. First off, if you only need the number, you need not locate the confirmation letter. You can find the number from your bank records, previous tax filings, or your business communication with the IRS.

You may need to know some details to confirm your identity to the IRS — for example, your business address as it appears in the IRS records and the type of form that your business uses for filing tax returns .

The easiest way to get a copy of an EIN verification letter is to call the IRS. Follow the below process to obtain a tax ID verification letter from the IRS:

  • Call the IRS support at 800-829-4933.
  • Provide the name of your business and other verification details like address and phone number to the support executive.
  • Request the support executive for a 147c letter; placing such a request is free.
  • If your contact information is the same as what you provided when applying for the EIN, the IRS can send you the verification letter through mail or fax.
  • If your contact information has changed, you can receive the verification letter only after you file Form 8822.

Getting a Copy of an EIN Letter From the Bank

Receiving a verification letter from the IRS can take about a month. If you've submitted a copy of your original EIN certificate to your bank, getting a copy from there would be much quicker. Although a photocopy received from the bank can't substitute the IRS verification letter, it can serve the purpose in some urgent situations. For example, your vendors may accept it as a proof of your EIN.

If you applied for the EIN through an external accountant or agency, you may be able to get a copy of your confirmation letter from them. If you applied for the EIN through the IRS website, try looking for the IRS confirmation email.

How do I get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or ITIN is for taxpayers who don't qualify for a Social Security number. It's 9 digits long and looks like a Social Security number, except it always begins with the number 9.

ITINs are used exclusively for filing tax returns. They don't entitle the taxpayer to Social Security benefits, stimulus payments, or other benefits.

To apply for an ITIN, complete IRS  Form W-7, IRS Application for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number . Form W-7 requires documentation substantiating foreign/alien status and true identity for each individual.

You can mail the W-7 and documentation to the address in the Form W-7 Instructions. In short, The ITIN is a 9-digit number issued by the IRS. It is used to process the tax returns of individuals who are not eligible to work in the US and have no social security number.
