Love, Revenge: Vintage wine in new bottle:
The last time Shankar embraced romance would have been “Kadhalan”, is that right? Well, strike that! As none of his movies were short of romance, as the “Love” rather played an important aspect in almost all of his movies. With “I”, we see Shankar experimenting by rather stepping away from his usual message oriented flicks to an action cum romantic drama spearheaded by Chiyaan Vikram and Amy Jackson. Spread over a period of two years, a strict weight regime from the lead actor, trots around the globe and finally an audio launch from Arnold, so has I lived up to the expectation? Let’s find out
The Hunchback, the beast, a bodybuilder, a suave model? The transition by Vikram as Lingesan is what “I” all about. As a diehard bodybuilder whose only goal in life is become Mr. India, deviates from his PATH by falling heads over heels on Diya (Amy). Right, as you sit gaping at Vikram’ s Greek Godish physique through his body building exhibit, out comes the Amy the diva making us sit back and wonder if anyone else could have done this role better.
Shankar takes time to establish his characters, a buildup that rather consumes a lot of time and gets more predictable on who’s who. Love being the Holy Grail of this movie, the avid chemistry between the lead pair rather blossoms in a convincing way and as one might have guessed amongst some of the scenic landscapes on earth.
The movie itself switches between timelines of now and then, a part where the sinister hunchback appears out of nowhere and tortures his victims, the other part where the Bodybuilder turned model runs smitten over an upcoming diva. With a little over 180 minutes of screenplay the plotline would have rather turned dull if not for the occasional humor infused, thanks to the wisecracks from Santhanam.
The stage is set for a grand finale, a heartwarming romance between one of the hottest couple around, a couple of villains licking their wounds to get back their lost pride, so what happens next? Who is the hunchback? Enough spoilers, watch the movie to find out.
What’s good?
Most often in a Shankar movie, the critic’s first impression would be the “Larger than Life” impression that Shankar leaves behind. But in “I”, Vikram’s flies in and dunks the ball, and just keeps doing it.
Two words “Simply Awesome”! To start, “I” is not the movie that brings a character just for the sake of it, however integrates into the plot. All the hardwork Vikram has put into has a fitting justification, something that doesn’t serve just the actor’s hunger but what the fan’s stomach wants as well.
Some of the highlights include the short yet sweet exchange of Madras Baashai between Amy and Vikram, the stunning acting sequences from Chiyaan after Interval, Amy sets the screen on fire as a model, finally though I hate to repeat this in every Shankar movie; the Songs and its jaw dropping picturization. As again Rahman somehow keeps waving his magic wand for Shankar movies at ease, springs life to the movie. PC Sreeram’s work behind the lens, especially for the shots in China are simply magnificent, also puts justice to the extensive makeup work from the Weta workshop.
Amy Jackson’s screen presence is just wow. While leaving the cinema hall, one cannot think of someone else in her place, and she had worked really hard to get the lip synch, which is laudable. Suresh Gopi has underplayed for most part of the movie and erupted hard when it's required. Upen Patel looks classy and fits the bill perfectly as an international model. Ramkumar Ganesan will remind you the famous Liquor baron and Shankar has extracted what is needed from him.
Although the movie is a visual treat, the editing department could have spent some more time to make the screenplay a bit faster than what it had been served. At the end of 3 hours, 10 mins, the viewers are exhausted to some extent. The movie features four extraordinary stunt sequences and probably for the very first time, the viewers are sticking to their seats when the stunts arrive, on-screen. WETA has done more than a magic to the script and this will open new avenues for Tamil cinema.
Why, What and How?
As much we enjoy Shankar’s manifestation of opulence there are staggering moments in the movie that could have changed its outlook.
- Of all the Shankar movies, I is the most predictable one; be it the plot or the next to come sequence.
- It’s surprising to see mediocre dubbing in a perfectionist’s movie, all the lip synch between the non-Tamil speakers look haywire.
- At a stretch of 189 minutes, the screenplay clearly tugs along giving out time for ample dull moments, could have been trimmed.
- An age old tested storyline heavily weighs on Vikram’s performance and makes the viewers constantly in search of thrills and perks.
Ergo, I capitalizes too much on Vikram’s energetic performances yet crosses the boundary line in style.
Verdict : 3/5

Shankar has taken this basic premise and envisioned a script in his characteristic grandeur style throwing in a lot of digital trickery, exotic locations and a lot of fist-pounding action scenes involving multiple villains.

Shankar's beauty and the beast.
There is no secret that Ai is loosely based on the story of "Beauty and the Beast". The story itself is nothing new and has been told many time over ages and multiple cultures. Vikram's I is definitely a Pongal treat
The narrative lacks the pace; we usually associate with a Shankar's film. But he does tell a beautiful tale of love sullied by jealousies, greed and anger. The intriguing screenplay as the director alternates between the light-hearted past and the thrilling present keeps you engrossed. (more)

I is definitely not the best of Shankar, but still it is a one-time watch.
We are all used to Shankar movies with witty, hard-hitting dialogues but this one is not up to the mark. It won't be an exaggeration to say that late Sujatha is badly missed. The only laughs in this film few and far between are provided by Santhanam. (more)

A terrific performance let down by an uninspired, exhausting movie
There's a hint of subtext in the beauty-and-the-beast premise. I is set largely in the world of advertising, where looks matter, and the biggest suffering one can endure, according to the film, is the loss of these looks. But it's understandable that these themes aren't elaborated (more)

‘I’ Tamil movie review: Vikram’s magnificent performance let down by contrived plot
Vikram carries the film like a powerful mule saddled with the burden of carrying a dead cart. seamlessly transforming into three different looks with an overhaul in terms of a physical transformation, it is the veteran’s show all the way..

By India.com Entertainment Desk
Apart from bodybuilding, Lingesan has a crush on a famous model, Diya (Amy Jackson), and collects her photos from newspapers and magazines. Meanwhile, John ( Upen Patel ) lusts after Diya but the latter rejects his advances. After having enough, Diya recommends Lingesan, fresh from winning the Mr Tamil Nadu competition he longed for, for being her pair for her projects.
The love track is juvenile and lacks depth. Shankar’s eye for grandeur is evident in the spectacular locales of China.
Malayalam star Suresh Gopi, a doctor, plays a common friend of the leading pair. Ojas M Rajani (Osma) plays a transgender make up artist who longs for Lingesan’s love are other members of the cast. All of them have important roles in the second half. There is comedian Santhanam, who is given an extended supporting role. Watch out for his avatar as a reporter towards the end – at its rib-tickling best.
The love scenes are a tedious watch and despite the brilliantly orchestrated songs with music by A R Rahman , the songs fail to allure the viewer in the way Shankar’s previous movies have. Moving away from tackling corruption, the director has ventured into an unchartered territory. The packaging and grip that has been his forte too is found wanting here and that is I ‘s biggest stumbling block.
With I having a much bigger release in the Hindi-speaking market than any other movie from the south, the cast is full of actors who have a pan-India appeal. The lip-synching is rather poor throughout and makes you squirm after a point. A couple of stunt sequences are brilliantly choreographed and executed. The much talked about episode with professional cyclists in China though, goes slightly overboard.
Amy Jackson passes muster and looks stunning throughout, captured by P C Sreeram’s outstanding camerawork
Vikram carries the film like a powerful mule saddled with the burden of carrying a dead cart. Seamlessly transforming into three different looks with a modulations that ranges from hollow to suave with a physical transformation that borders inhuman levels, it is the veteran’s show all the way. Professional make up artists, WETA, who worked on the make up should be lauded for their outstanding work. Vikram’s efforts will go on to be benchmark for his fellow actors in the years to come, I though, is far from it.

"I" is a 2015 Indian Tamil-language romantic thriller film directed by Shankar and produced by V. Ravichandran. The movie features Vikram, Amy Jackson, and Suresh Gopi in leading roles, with Upen Patel, Santhanam, and Ramkumar Ganesan appearing in supporting roles. The movie revolves around a talented bodybuilder named Lingesan (Vikram) who dreams of becoming a successful model. He adores a popular supermodel Diya (Amy Jackson) and ends up falling in love with her. Lingesan's life changes when he wins a local bodybuilding competition and is offered a modeling contract by Diya's friend, John (Upen Patel).
Lingesan changes his name to Lee and moves to the city where he starts a modeling career. He becomes popular and soon becomes the face of a leading brand. However, his dreams and aspirations come to a halt when a mysterious virus attacks him and disfigures his face.
With the disfigurement, Lingesan's life takes an unexpected turn, and he decides to take revenge on those who caused him pain. He transforms himself into a hunchback, using prosthetics and makeup to achieve his new look.
In his quest for revenge, Lingesan uses his modeling skills to get close to the people who wronged him. He becomes involved with Jo (Amy Jackson in a dual role), who suddenly gains immense popularity in the modeling world. Jo bears a striking resemblance to Diya and is sought after by John, who gets her involved in his plans to sabotage Lingesan's modeling career.
As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Lingesan's pursuit of revenge is not only against those who hurt him but also against the entire modeling industry, which he regards as corrupt and superficial. His mission becomes a war against the exploitation of models, which he believes has caused harm and destruction to many aspiring models.
The screenplay of "I" is outstanding, and the performances of the cast are exceptional, especially that of Vikram, who gives his best performance to date. His portrayal of the hunchbacked Lingesan is chilling and heartwarming at the same time, making the audience root for him throughout the movie.
Amy Jackson also delivers an excellent performance, depicting the two different personalities of Diya and Jo, which are so contrasting that the audience never gets confused. The direction by Shankar is top-notch, and his vision to create a cinematic spectacle is visible in every frame.
The music of the movie, composed by A. R. Rahman, is powerful, and the songs are catchy, making the audience sing along. The visual effects used in the movie, especially for the transformation of Lingesan and the bodybuilding competitions, are spectacular and give a realistic touch to the movie.
Overall, "I" is an exciting and engaging movie that blends revenge, romance, and social issues beautifully. It showcases the power of determination and hard work and emphasizes the importance of body positivity and self-love. The movie's message is loud and clear, and the audience will find themselves cheering for the underdog until the very end.
I is a 2015 action movie with a runtime of 2 hours and 59 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.4.

Vikram is one among the top cinema celebrities, who dedicate themselves for their career, completely. The hunchback Vikram might seem to be ugly, but he is so beautiful by his performance. What a terrific performance!!!
The song locations which were taken in China are extraordinary with beautiful bright colors. The other locations include Chennai, Bangkok, Jodhpur, Kodaikanal, Pollachi, Bangalore and Mysore.
Shankar… The director should definitely be praised for his stunning story and the direction. Right from his first movie, he created more expectations. Whether it is Gentleman or Shivaji or Mudhalvan, he made the heroes to get deep into their roles and made them to punch a message. Anniyan is really a benchmark in Vikram’s career. This is possible only by Shankar.
This high budgeted romantic thriller has Santhanam, to make the audience giggle. Though the film has Vikram, doing his best part, he stands in the heart only through the hunchback part. In short, this is the movie, which can be watched in theatres once, for the stunning sets and for Vikram’s hunchback. Cinematographer P.C.Sreeram has done a great job as he did in his films before films.

Review: Proudly bizarre 'I Saw the TV Glow" will boggle your mind – and that's the point
The proudly bizarre horror movie “I Saw the TV Glow” will likely spark many a “What the heck did I just watch?” reaction – which in this case, is a good thing because there’s no right answer.
A story of two lonely youngsters and their shared favorite TV show, transgender writer/director Jane Schoenbrun’s eerily immersive and discomforting dive into 1990s suburbia is a well-acted coming-of-age queer allegory and also an intriguing pop-culture deconstruction.
Like “Donnie Darko” or David Lynch’s entire oeuvre, “Glow” (★★★ out of four; rated R; in select theaters now, nationwide Friday) blends the real and the surreal in a neon-drenched nightmare that leaves a trail of thematic breadcrumbs for its audience. And sure, it could be way more straightforward and less artistically cryptic, but that commitment to entrancing weirdness is part of the movie's special sauce and pretty much Schoenbrun’s whole deal.
Their confident debut, the 2022 film festival find “ We’re All Going to the World’s Fair ,” was a hauntingly trippy, COVID-19-era cautionary tale centered on the virtual worlds where isolated kids wander. “I Saw the TV Glow” offers a larger, more challenging narrative with a throwback vibe.
Twelve-year-old Owen (Ian Foreman) comes along when his mom (Danielle Deadwyler) works an election night at school. In the empty cafeteria, he meets teenager Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine), who’s reading a book about the TV series “The Pink Opaque.” She asks him if he’s seen it; he hasn’t but is enamored of commercials for this show, about two girls with a psychic connection who take on weekly supernatural threats. (Think “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” or “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” back in the day.)
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
“Pink Opaque” comes on after Owen’s bedtime, so he sneaks out at night to watch it with Maddy. As years go by – with Justice Smith playing anxious, asthmatic Owen from 14 to adulthood – they form a close bond, using the show as a transfixing escape from their troubled households. One day Maddy disappears, leaving only her flaming TV behind, and "Pink Opaque" is abruptly canceled. Almost a decade later, Maddy shows back up as a clearly changed person, and her reappearance as well as Owen's continued obsession over this show take a toll on his mental well-being.
A nonbinary filmmaker, Schoenbrun infuses "Glow" with personal metaphor, aiming to capture the feelings of a trans person seeking and finding who they truly are: In one scene, Maddy asks Owen if he likes girls or boys and he responds, “I think I like TV shows.” At the same time, they successfully create a landscape relatable to anyone who’s felt like an outsider in their own skin or home. And it all will feel uncannily familiar for those who grew up in the film’s mid-1990s setting, from what’s on that glowing TV screen to Fruitopia drink machines in school.
There are many layers that build out the atmosphere. Schoenbrun intersperses scenes from “Pink Opaque” that feel like a fuzzy escape from the psychologically wrought main plot, with the walls weirdly breaking down between them. There are incidental musical moments – including a cameoing Phoebe Bridgers – straight out of the “Twin Peaks” Roadhouse, and inspired by the likes of "Buffy" and "The X-Files," Schoenbrun unleashes villainous creatures of the “monster of the week” TV variety, like big bad man-in-the-moon Mr. Melancholy, that toe the line between cheesy and freaky.
Alongside themes of sexuality, identity and human connection, the cultural aspect of “I Saw the TV Glow” will hit home, especially for modern audiences. Our collective fandom for TV shows and movies can bring us together but can corrupt as well when what we watch becomes our everything. The movie offers a strong take on the dangers of nostalgia, and what happens when it ventures from needed sanctuary to a repressive prison.
So you might have no idea what the heck you just watched, especially with the rather abrupt ending, but there’s plenty to chew on and think about afterward.

For some years now, Nicolas Cage has been a genre unto himself: desperate, deranged, deliciously cheesy, with that special mastery of dialogue that moves seamlessly from a panting whisper to a bellow and back again. Put Cage’s name above the title and your film has an immediate brand that not only rides over script glitches but does a full Fast and Furious speed-jump over the top of any yawning gaps in probability.

Spider-Man ‘Noir’ Starring Nicolas Cage Gets Amazon Series Order
The point here is that Nic Cage is a sweating, dirty, increasingly crazed dude having successive breathless pitched battles with local delinquents, a he-man cult based on the beach and the whole spectrum of Australia’s scary fauna, from the kookaburras that laugh at him to the snake that slithers around him when he’s hiding in the bushes at night. Despite his dearth of the kinds of certain skills Liam Neeson might bring to the table, he eventually will triumph against the bullies. And do we believe that? Totally! That’s the Cage brand!
RELATED: Cannes Film Festival Photos
The young ones here are mean. Their elders – Nic’s own generation, supposedly, though that’s another stretch – are meaner. Spying from the carpark where he ends up making a kind of encampment after his ejection from the beach, he sees his old schoolmate Scott Callinan (Julian McMahon) conducting rituals that seem to define a kind of cult. The men and boys kneel, chant and growl like dogs. Maybe they’re a little excessive, says a local mother who comes to get a coffee from a stand at the beach, but it keeps out the riff raff. Nic can’t get a coffee. He offers his watch as collateral. It’s stolen. So is his surfboard, so is his phone, so are his shoes. He can’t even get water from the toilet block; the sink is guarded by an Australian version of Cerberus, a furiously barking chained monster. And yet, somehow, it never occurs to him to drive away. That’s how exploitation films work. Everyone seems to consent to the horror.s Cage Battle
The fact our hero simply refuses to go anywhere, even to get a bottle of water, while he still can really is several steps over the barrier of believability. Maybe that hurdle could have been cleared with some brisker editing; if the risks were more frequent and the obstacles insuperable, if the whole thing snapped along faster so that there was no time to feel the suspension of disbelief sagging, the sense of peril would steamroller its absurdity into the sand. As it is, The Surfer is an object lesson in how to make a film economically by using a single location, a bunch of surfing extras and some stock footage of lizards. Which is the grindhouse ethic at work, for sure.

‘IF’ Review: Invisible Friends, but Real Celebrity Cameos
The film is a slim story about a girl named Bea (Cailey Fleming) who helps a crank named Cal (Ryan Reynolds) play matchmaker. Oh, and Bradley Cooper is a glass of ice water.
- Share full article
By Amy Nicholson
The big “IF” — as in “imaginary friend” — in John Krasinski’s treacly kids dramedy is a grizzly-sized purple goon who goes by the name Blue. The boy who conjured him was colorblind, he explains. Blue (voiced by Steve Carell) is one of dozens of dreamed-up creatures in Brooklyn who long for their now-grown BFFs to remember they exist.
At the Memory Lane Retirement Community underneath Coney Island, there’s also a pink alligator (Maya Rudolph), a superhero dog (Sam Rockwell), a worn teddy (Louis Gossett Jr.), a retro cartoon butterfly (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), a robot (Jon Stewart), an astronaut (George Clooney), a glass of ice water (Bradley Cooper), a gummy bear (Amy Schumer), a unicorn (Emily Blunt), a flower (Matt Damon), a cat in an octopus costume (Blake Lively), a ghost (Matthew Rhys), a soap bubble (Awkwafina), some green slime (Keegan-Michael Key), and an invisible blob who the credits claim is none other than Brad Pitt.
What’s more impressive: Krasinski’s imagination or the very real friends in his Rolodex?
Most of these characters merely stroll through the frame to say hello, or whine to each other in group therapy. Yet these celebrity cameos take up about as much space as the plot, a gentle, slim story about an unflappable 12-year-old girl named Bea (Cailey Fleming) who helps a crank named Cal (Ryan Reynolds) play matchmaker for the lonely IFs.
If — and this is a rhetorical if — you’re still traumatized by the last shot of Bing Bong, the forgotten imaginary friend in Pixar’s “Inside Out,” breathe easy. There’s no existential threat (or narrative tension) about what might happen if the goofy gang remains consigned to oblivion. Palling about with kids again just sounds nice.
Bea, a solemn preteen with stick-straight hair, is the only child able to see all of the IFs, which is hard to reconcile with the fact that she also seems like the oldest little girl in the world; Reynolds, her foil, is regularly cast as the world’s most immature man, although here he’s been dialed down to a benevolent grouch. With her mother dead, her father (Krasinski) in the hospital, and her grandmother (Fiona Shaw) distracted watching Jimmy Stewart’s “Harvey” on TV, Bea is free to roam the streets of New York — which, to the fellow kids in the audience, might be as extraordinary as all of the shots of her strolling slowly through bedazzled fantasies. (The standout, odd as it sounds, is a musical number set to Tina Turner’s “Better Be Good to Me,” that’s wholly divorced from its erotic context.)
Any child over 5 will predict the Keyser Söze twist in Bea and Cal’s relationship. But this is a film that spells out its intentions for an audience still learning its ABCs, a film where Michael Giacchino’s misty violins never stop insisting how to feel, where Krasinski’s goofy dad literally wears a heart on his chest.
Krasinski has the worthy goal of making a children’s movie with an air of prestige — like his characters, he’s striving to be remembered long past opening weekend — and so the cinematographer Janusz Kaminski obligingly fills the screen with handsome images of spiral staircases and leather-bound books. Still, only two scenes accomplish the transcendence Krasinski is after, and both involve the simplest of all special effects: a shot of an adult human being that asks us to use our own imaginations to see the child inside.
IF Rated PG. Running time: 1 hour 44 minutes. In theaters.
