'Kabzaa' movie review: An ambitious and violent crime drama

Kabzaa. (File Photo)

During the promotions, director R Chandru admitted that the KGF franchise inspired him to create the world of Kabzaa. But Kabzaa has its own personality, impressive grandeur, solid star cast, massive sets, whistle-worthy dialogues, over-the-top violence, and of course... Upendra.

The film is about the rise of the underworld and traces the life of Arakeshwara (Upendra). Narrated by encounter specialist Bhargav Bhakshi (Sudeep), the narrative has a never-ending barrage of characters, especially various dons, making fleeting appearances in and out of the film.

Set between the 40s and the 80s, we are introduced to Arakeshwara, who is born into a family of freedom fighters. Along with his parents and an elder brother, Sankeshwara (Sunil Puranik), the family is into weaving flags. Arakeshwara aspires to become a pilot and gets all the support from his elder brother.

However, his dreams are cut short when his brother is murdered.  The otherwise mild Arakeshwara turns violent, and marks his accidental entry into the underworld. Will he succeed in ruling the roost for a long time or meet a worthy challenger in Bhargav Bakshi makes up for the first part, and Shivarajkumar’s cameo in this instalment only sets up a potential showdown between these three superstars in Kabzaa 2.  The actual story of Kabzaa is established in the second half and is peppered with high-octane action sequences featuring swords, guns, and a lot of bloodshed. Points to stunt directors Ravi Varma, Vijay, Chethan D’ Souze, Vinod, Vikram Mor, and Thriller Manju for delivering the adrenaline rush.

Apart from the violence, Arakeshwara also has a romantic angle, involving Madhumathi (Shriya Saran), the Queen of the Bahaddhur family, who gets married against the wishes of her father. What price she pays for marrying a gangster is brought through various events, giving room for many more characters to be introduced in the sequel.  There is a lot of drama, romance, and action, and can a film ever be complete without doses of mother sentiment?

Kabzaa is purely Chandru’s vision and he mounts it through the superstardom of the three stars. But undoubtedly, the film belongs to its technical crew who deliver a solid spectacle. Art director Shivakumar masterfully crafts the massive sets to bring alive Chandru’s vision for Kabzaa. Ravi Basrur continues to carry his signature style and balances the mass appeal of the film’s star cast, and the music required for commercial potboilers. While the background music might seem too loud, it justifies the film’s rather dark narrative. AJ Shetty, who has previously assisted Bhuvan Gowda in KGF, has utilised his learnings from that film in Kabzaa. Another KGF alumni, editor Mahesh Reddy employs a similar pattern but manages to dish out a distinct style too. However, the VFX leaves a lot to be desired.

‘If you want to win. I will play the game. If you want to kill, I will end the game,’ says Upendra in one of the high points of the film. Kabzaa allows the actor to showcase his super-heroic side, and he stands tall. He fits well into the role of Arakeshwara, and nails his transformation from a normal person to a dreaded don. Shriya is regal as the Queen, and is a perfect fit for the role.  Sudeep’s narration adds value to the film and helps us traverse through the various timelines and characters. His appearance as a strict police officer will cheer his fans. Shivarajkumar’s entry makes you look forward to the sequel.

With countless characters seen in various face-offs with Upendra, Danish Akhtar Sait in the role of Baali,  Nawab Shah as Bangera, Kamarajan as Khalid, and John Kokken as Malik, make their presence felt. There is Anup Revanna as Target Fayas and Murali Sharma who give a decent performance. The film also features Ashwath Ninasam and Suresh in blink-and-miss roles. In fact, innumerable characters in the film only end up being forgettable.

Kabzaa’s story does not follow KGF but it does have similar themes like the underdog becoming an underworld don. It is definitely a film for all those who enjoy action drama, superior technical quality, and of course, the high of watching three of Sandalwood’s biggest superstars coming together on the big screen.

Kabzaa Movie Review: Upendra, Sudeep star in KGF-lite film which questions your sensibility

R chandru’s kabzaa is a film that loves bullets, guns and beheaded men. starring upendra, kichcha sudeep and shriya saran, the film is an unimpressive gangster drama that is a danger to your eardrums, says our review..

Listen to Story

Upendra and Kichcha Sudeep's Kabzaa hit theatres on March 17.

  • Kabzaa features Upendra, Shriya Saran and Kichcha Sudeep.
  • The film is directed by R Chandru.
  • The film graced the screens on March 17.

Release Date: 17 Mar, 2023

Post Yash’s KGF’s resounding success, gangster dramas have become a repeated genre for filmmakers. And R Chandru’s Kabzaa doesn’t shy away from adapting KGF’s aesthetics. To an extent, it also adapts KGF’s story. And throughout, you get a Deja Vu feeling while watching Upendra beheading men, killing one villain after another.

Arkeshwaran is an Indian Air Force pilot and saint-like. He doesn’t even have the guts to confess his love for king Veer Bahadur’s daughter Madhumathi (Shriya Saran) to his mother. One day, his brother Sankeswaran dies a tragic death and gets beheaded. It’s an end to Arkeswaran AKA Arka's good days. His life takes a turn and he grows into a deadly mafia head.

Chandru’s film takes itself very seriously. It masquerades as a film that is high on content, but, in retrospect, it has a wafer-thin storyline. Instead, the voice-over tells you what we already know. The film is an example of how a voice-over shouldn’t be used if it cannot elevate an already drowning story. Kabzaa is a film that talks about the rise of a common man in the most violent way possible.

All Arkeshwara gets is targets to kill every 20 minutes. We are introduced to many villains at frequent intervals and Arka kills them in a jiffy. Either he walks around with the heads of the beheaded men or with pistols in his hand. Every single conflict gets resolved in a few minutes and, because of this, we are hardly invested in the story. We also see Arka trying to make our hearts melt with his romance with Madhumathi. But, you end up staring at the screen with zero expression on your face. Be it action or romance, nothing actually excites you.

Kabzaa suffers from predictability. It takes a formulaic route and the characterisation of the caricaturish villains does not add up to the story. On top of that, one of the villains played by Nawab Shah has a tattoo that reads ‘cruel.’ Wondering what it means? It’s a cue for you to be afraid of him.

The less said about the performances by Upendra, Sudeep and Shriya Saran, the better. There is no redeemable quality about Kabzaa except the ‘surprise’ in the climax, which gives a lead to the sequel. The sequence is tastefully done despite being quite predictable.

Ravi Basrur, who made heads turn with his captivating music in KGF, will make you go deaf with Kabzaa. In a scene, Upendra’s Arka says, ‘I am allergic to noise. I prefer silence.’ Upendra, we feel you!

Kabzaa could have been another KGF for the Kannada film industry. But, it ends up being a laughing stock.

Kabzaa Movie Review: A KGF Rehash Where Men Roam Around With Beheaded Heads As Accessory, Possibly No Brains & Speak In Google Translated Dialogues

Kabzaa is a crash course on how not to make a gangster drama.

kabza movie review and ratings

Star Cast: Upendra, Kichcha Sudeep, Shriya Saran, Murli Sharma, and ensemble.

Director: R. Chandru, Shivu Hiremath, and Soori

Kabzaa Movie Review

What’s Good: The production design and lighting departments are the only two who took their assignments a bit seriously.

What’s Bad: Rest everyone decided to copy from other’s sheet, and one has to see the sheer audacity of a team of people hell-bent on wasting a lot of money. There’s even a part two.

Loo Break: Whenever someone decides to smear someone’s head, we should all take mental breaks. Loo will serve as a meditation centre in this case.

Watch or Not?: If you have nothing else left to see, you might still want to watch that beautiful tree from your window. Also, I honestly want your eardrums to be safe.

Language: Kannada.

Available on: Theatres Near You.

Runtime: 136 Minutes.

I will try. Decades after independence, two sons of a dead king who eloped with their mother are in hiding in the South of India. When they grow up, one of the two is murdered, and the other roams around seeking revenge, only to kill people and splash the watermelon juice out of them.

Kabzaa Movie Review

Kabzaa Movie Review: Script Analysis

You know, there are some films that test your patience to an extent where you just want all of it to end or at least the theatre to burn down, so the misery ends once and for all—precisely that. Kannada cinema, indeed has found itself in a very new light as we speak. KGF , Kantara, and 777 Charlie are shining examples. While not a fan of the Yash starrer, I agree it brings panache to the screen, which is why Rocky Bhai stands out and entertains. But it is a path carved for an entire industry, and the rest should march with a versatile product and not just end up rehashing what worked last.

Written by M Chandramouli and R. Chandru, Underworld Ka Kabzaa is literally a bunch of men gate-crashing a wonderful set every day and shooting narratives that will massage the ego of the evil inside them. Because nothing else explains the chaos and lack of story or structure to this movie that is, so hell-bent on celebrating toxicity all the time. It is just trying to multiply everything done in the last similar franchise with no nuance to it.

The attempt is to tell a story of a righteous and naive man going all evil and turning into a monster that the world dreads. To shape this we need to explore his world, his mind, and what he stood for. But instead, the film, with its zillion cuts and hammy editing focuses on how he fires bullets without even moving his fingers.

This world claims to be a very intense horrifying setup where you will be afraid of some character. But the writing never really allows that to happen because every single character is a spoof of every gangster you have ever seen in the Indian cinema. They are caricatures, one note, and if that is not helping you to drop your plan to watch this one, one of the villains played by Nawab Shah has ‘cruel’ tattooed on his face under his eye. Like it isn’t enough that he is dressed like a drag queen on a big ship under the burning sun, and he is just one of the villains; the rest are even more hilarious.

The movie doesn’t take anything seriously other than the never-ending weird moustaches of its multiple characters. That is not how you built gangsters, guys. The film tries to be clever when it builds an entire fictional town visually, and the production and VFX team even deliver. But nothing is era-appropriate. Everything is either too modern or too dated. Plus, if you build a jail with metal gates for security and show the police force securing it without knowing that their everyday enemy has a helicopter to fly in, you are making a joke out of yourself.

Also, whoever wrote the dialogues for the Hindi dub must be heavily fined for using Google translator. They are so verbose and so bad that half of them will make you laugh your guts out in the most serious situation. They use ‘Mahatvapurna’ and ‘Copy’ in the same line. What is this? Why are we watching it?

Kabzaa Movie Review: Star Performance

Every actor is told to mimic somebody, and you can see it. There is no attempt to build a unique gangster whose story we would want to trace. The common brief for men is that they will have to walk around slitting throats and cutting heads. And women, of which only two inconsequential exist in this universe are supposed to serve the fragile egos of the men around them.

Kichcha Sudeep, who has been used as the face for promotions, is literally a cameo. Upendra looks like he is forced to be here. All the villains are supposedly performing for their auditions in the Drag Race. Nothing else explains Nawab Shah’s obsession with his own cleavage.

Kabzaa Movie Review

Kabzaa Movie Review: Direction, Music

The direction, or the lack of it in Kabzaa is just unbearable. The visuals are unnecessarily gory and loud to an extent that you just want all of this to stop because it is too poorly done. Creating an edgy gangster drama is not just killing people as pass time and showing gallons of blood coming out of a slit throat. It is much more than that, and the directors need to know it.

Music is just too loud for anyone who has ears. The art, costume, and production department need to have a word with a therapist, though. Why is my glass of Rasna thicker than your blood? Who decided the characters’ looks, and did they think this was a circus-themed movie? Who supplied an extensive eye makeup to Shriya Saran in the desert where there is literally not even a sapling around her palace and no connect with the outer world at all? Why did you say yes to this job?

Also, whoever decided to black out the screen after every five minutes throughout the movie and multiple times during an action sequence on the edit table, please don’t ever even think of repeating that.

Kabzaa Movie Review: The Last Word

Kabzaa is a crash course on how not to make a gangster drama because everything about it is wrong.

Kabza has a powerful storyline that is backed by the crisp screenplay and ultimate background music. The tension and uneasiness in the air during the certain moments of the film is a next level experience. Background music compliments the great action sequences and the thrill of the tale. The movie never tends to get tedious with its storytelling and always has something to surprise the viewers.

Kabza Movie Review: An Intense Action Thriller that will Soak You In

Upendra is fantastic as a mafia leader. He is rightly the main character as his persona and skills are completely mind-blowing in the role of a gangster. Kiccha Sudeep is as usual at his finest. He shines in the role of a police inspector. Shriya Saran is a delight to watch. Her screen presence is second to none in this fast-paced mafia thriller.

R. Chandru has done a fantastic job in bringing out the best of every involved actor in this film. Even the emotional scenes are done with complete perfection. There is not a single department in which Kabza really lacks. Hardcore action thriller fans are going to fall in love with this movie.

Kabzaa Movie Review – Another KGF from Kannada Film Industry

Are you waiting for Kabzaa Movie Review before watching this much-awaited Kannada movie? Wait is over, now you can read the full review of the Kabzaa movie here.

After witnessing masterpieces such as KGF and Kantara, we already have higher expectations from the Kannada Film Industry, and they have once again delivered an outstanding cinema. Action, Thriller, Crime, and Drama – this movie has all aspects to become a potential blockbuster but failed to connect with the audience, and logic is missing in the whole movie. More than simply the style, flavor, and genre, Upendra’s gangster drama resembles “KGF”; it is a rip-off filled with vacuous replicas of everything that made Prashanth Neel’s movies entertaining.

Honest Review of Kabzaa Movie

Read the Kabzaa Movie Review (2023) before Going to Theaters:

Overall Rating – 8/10

Highlights – Cinematography, BGM

For whom – People who love action and gangster drama

What’s Unique – It’s the perfect blend of “Once Upon a Time in Mumbai” and “KGF” so if you love to watch gangster stories then this is the perfect treat for you. Definitely, you will love the picture-perfect frames and power-packed actions.

What’s the story – The pre-independence era drama Kabzaa centers on the life of Arkeshwara (Upendra), the wild son of a freedom warrior who later became a mafia don. He then proceeds to create a vast empire. The key themes of the film are what makes him such a powerful figure and why the patriotic father’s son ended up as an underworld don.

Full Review:

A Visual treat for KGF and Kichcha Sudeep fans. Kabzaa movie is the ultimate combination of gang-war, one-to-one actions, emotions, and thriller. A brilliant gangster story with a new-era concept and emotions that are enough to engage the audience till the last moment. One of the key factors that make it unique from other movies is its background music.

The storytelling and the narration were weak. Powerful action scenes and locations were perfect according to the movie’s theme. If you are a cinema lover who loves a huge cinematic set then Kabzaa movie is just made for you. Other people who do not like to see illogical fights and actions then please do not waste your money.

We should highly appreciate two factors in our Kabzaa movie review that are the BGM and cinematography of the Kabzaa movie 2023. Brilliant work by Upendra Rao, Kichcha Sudeep, Shreya Saran, and Shiva Rajkumar. The Hindi dubbed version of the “Kabzaa movie” is also a good option to watch for Hindi audiences. You can enjoy this true piece of entertainment in the nearby cinema from 17 march 2023.

A massive PAN Indian film named Kabzaa starring Upendra and Shriya Saran in the lead roles hit the screens today. Kiccha Sudeepa and Shiva Rajkumar played crucial cameos. The film, originally shot in Kannada, was dubbed into other Indian languages. P Chandru directed this period action film. Let’s see how it is.

Arkeshwara (Upendra), an Indian Air Force Officer, hails from a freedom fighter family. He is head over heels for Madhumathi (Shriya Saran), an affluent girl, and both plan to tie the knot. On the other hand, we get to see a bunch of dreadful gangsters and politicians who are craving power in Amarapura. In a complete turn around of events, Arkeshwara enters the crime world and eventually becomes a king. How did that change Arkeshwara’s life is the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

The cinematography is too good in Kabzaa, and the bygone era has been very well showcased. Upendra, who is known for his unique films, gave a very good performance. His screen presence is stunning, and he aced it in stunning action avatar.

The cameos by Kiccha Sudeepa and Shiva Rajkumar give major relief. The actors though seen for a very short time, make their presence felt. The action sequences are nicely composed, and the interval bang is alright.

Minus Points:

Once in a while, a film becomes a trendsetter through its unique presentation or concept. KGF is one such film that redefined heroism in Indian cinema. There is nothing wrong with getting inspired by such trendsetting movies, but the problem with Kabzaa is it almost looks like a replica of KGF. There must be some authentic factor to make the film appealing, but Kabzaa doesn’t have one. Right from story, narrative, and dialogues, Kabzaa looks exactly like KGF.

Even the voiceover that drives the story forward looks exactly similar to KGF. There is this car chase sequence in KGF 2 where the makers used a blackout effect to enhance the impact. In Kabzaa, this particular effect is used not once but throughout the movie, annoying the viewers extremely. It’s high time the filmmakers come out from KGF hangover and understand that the elements which worked for a movie won’t work all the time for other films.

That’s not the whole problem with Kabzaa. It has ages old story where the protagonist enters the crime world under inevitable circumstances. The film lacks any emotions, and hence we don’t feel the pain of the characters. The emphasis was entirely on making a larger-than-life film on a huge canvas, but unfortunately, the storytelling took a back seat in all this.

The second half is very difficult to sit through. The love track between the lead pair is pretty boring, and the romantic scenes keep coming intermittently, adding to the unending woes. The editing needed some serious changes. The fast cuts and clumsy presentation of scenes don’t help the film at all. The movie is dragged needlessly, and an even more aweful thing is announcing a sequel to this movie.

Technical Aspects:

Ravi Basrur’s music is loud, and the impact is heavily missing. Also, the story doesn’t give him enough scope to show his skills. The cinematography and production values are excellent. If not for AJ Shetty’s wonderful camera work, the movie would have been unbearable. The editing is bad, and the Telugu dubbing is poor.

Coming to the director Chandru, he did a poor job with the film. He also handled the story and screenplay but failed to leave a mark in any aspect. Even for a full blown action entertainer to succeed, there must be some emotion. But this aspect is completely missing in Kabzaa. The protagonist taking upon a crime world is a beaten-to-death concept, and hence there should have been some novelty.

On the whole, Kabzaa is a loud and boring period action drama that fails to live up to its expectations. Upendra and the cinematography are the only solaces in this tiresome flick. The routine story, uninteresting narrative, and lack of emotions make it a disappointing fare. You can comfortably skip this film.

Kabzaa (2023) Movie: What's Behind

One of the high budget Sandalwood film Kabzaa is attracting the attention of all with the mass elements and impactful teasers and trailers. The star cast of Upendra, Shriya Saran, Prakash Raj, Shiva Rajkumar and Kiccha Sudeep is generating immense interest. The film directed by R. Chandru is releasing on 17 March 2023. The film's OTT rights have been acquired by Amazon prime and streaming will be after the completion of the theatrical run. Let us find out what Kabzaa offered to movie lovers.

Kabzaa Movie: Story Review

Kabzaa story is all about how the honest life of a freedom fighter's son who is also an IAF pilot undergoes shocking changes due to various circumstances and happenings in his life. Arkeswara (Upendra), the son of a freedom fighter, who as an IAF pilot posted in Visakhapatnam, gets posted to Dehradun.

Before heading to Dehradun, he goes to meet his mother and brother in Amarapura. He meets his lover Madhumati (Shriya Saran), daughter of Raj Bahadur (Murli Sharma), who loses his kingdom and powers after Independence and who tries to get back his powers by any means.

Where this leads to how the power tangle between various forces affects the happy life of Arkeswara and how it is connected to Bhargava Bakshi (Kichcha Sudeepa) should be found on the screen.

Kabzaa Movie: Artists Review

Upendra looked macho in his role. He just enacted high-octane action sequences and there is nothing much for him to do in the film. Shriya Saran is ok in her role. It seems she lost her charm in the close angles in the looks. She however exhibited her dancing talent in a song. Fans of Shriya will be extremely disappointed seeing her in such an unattractive manner. Murli Sharma's role is ok as the king who loses his powers after India's independence.

Kichcha Sudeep played the cameo and he looked intense. Shiva Rajkumar appeared in a cameo in the climax and his presence is a treat to his fans. There are many other actors in the film and all just sport menacing looks and did not have much to do.

Kabzaa Movie: Technicians Review

Kabzaa's story readied by R. Chandru seems to have been inspired by the tremendous success of KGF. The film has all the dark elements and R. Chandru stuck to the point and right from the start to finish, he showed people going berserk with all guns blazing. R.Chandru's story is nothing new and it is beaten to death and seen in many films earlier. He roped in top stars for his film from Sandalwood but with no real story and KGF shades, the cast had nothing much to do but just pass through the motions.

With a weak story and lack of emotions, R. Chandru's screenplay and direction went awry. He only glorified violence and tried to justify the murders committed by the protagonist because he was wrong and it is a bloodbath on the screen.

AJ. Shetty's cinematography is good. It elevated the scenes to another level. However, the slow motion shots are overdone and they ended up irritating viewers. Ravi Basrur's music did not make any impression. Even the background music is loud. The editing of Mahesh Reddy left many repetitive scenes. It slowed the pace of the film though the duration is just over two hours. Dialogues are just ordinary and according to commercial entertainers. Production values are good.

Kabzaa Movie: Advantages

  • Cinematography

Kabzaa Movie:  Disadvantages

  • Forced Violence

Kabzaa (2023) Telugu Movie: Rating Analysis

Altogether, Kabzaa is a poor replica of KGF. R. Chandru planned to drive the masses crazy with a high-octane mass action entertainer. However, R. Chandru's story turned out to be outdated, and beaten to death. As the story offered nothing new and extremely weak, R. Chandru loaded it with violence and tried to highlight the scenes with massive explosions, glorification, and justification of violence without any reason. His screenplay and direction failed completely and became pathetic. R. Chandru should have concentrated on the story and script before loading the film with intense action elements propagating violence. Kabzaa shows how not to make a gangster movie. Considering all these elements, Cinejosh goes with a 1 Rating for Kabzaa.

A parent's guide to 'Challengers': Is Zendaya's new movie appropriate for tweens or teens?

kabza movie review and ratings

As a former Disney Channel kid, Zendaya has a fanbase that's grown up with her as an actress and she appeals to a younger generation. The 27-year-old is also beginning to take on more mature roles, like in HBO's "Euphoria," that may not be appropriate for everyone.

Which brings us to " Challengers " (in theaters now), her new R-rated tennis drama co-starring Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor. The trailer shows Zendaya's character when she's 18, so tweens and teens might think, "Hey, this is for me!" It also shows her in her 30s, as the movie tracks three people in a sporty love triangle that unfolds over more than a decade, so it's a little complicated.

Here's what parents of Zendaya-loving youngsters need to know about "Challengers":

What is the new Zendaya movie 'Challengers' about?

Zendaya has her most adult role yet in director Luca Guadagnino's sports movie: The film opens with her character Tashi as the 31-year-old coach, manager and wife of pro tennis player Art (Faist). After recent losses, he needs a confidence boost and she enters him in a lower-level tournament, where he faces rival Patrick (O'Connor), a financially struggling athlete from their past.

The movie then flashes back to the trio as teens, when the prodigal Tashi and doubles partners/friends Art and Patrick have a three-way makeout session in a hotel room that sparks evolving relationships between them.

Why is 'Challengers' rated R?

The movie is officially rated R for "language throughout, some sexual content and graphic nudity." Let's break that down: Yes, there are plenty of four-letter curse words and also sexual situations, though the latter aren't too steamy. O'Connor and Zendaya are in their underwear for one intimate scene, but that stuff on the whole veers more PG-13.

What parents might be more concerned by is the male nudity. After the aforementioned hotel hookup, Art has an erection in his boxer shorts that Patrick playfully smacks, while in a locker room scene, there are a couple of moments of full-frontal male genitalia, though not in a sexual context.

Is Zendaya's tennis film appropriate for children?

Not really, especially in regard to younger teens and under. Aside from the language, sexual content and nudity, "Challengers" explores a lot of headier themes that older teens might understand and appreciate more – among them, identity, sexuality, power dynamics and how people use strong feelings to manipulate one another. If your son or daughter is dying to see it, the official R-rated restriction applies nicely: Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian. Even if they've already snuck in a "Euphoria" binge watch.

What are some kid-friendly movies featuring the 'Challengers' cast?

The littlest Zendaya fans can stream her earlier Disney Channel comedy series "Shake It Up" and "K.C. Undercover" on Disney+. As for her film output, the musical "The Greatest Showman" (also starring Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron) has a wide appeal; the Marvel Spider-Man movies with her boyfriend Tom Holland ("Homecoming," "Far From Home" and "No Way Home") are all top-notch; and a "Dune" double feature would be good for tween and teen sci-fi fans.

Faist played Jets leader Riff in Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated "West Side Story" redo – and was in the best supporting actor conversation – plus stars in the Amazon streaming series "Panic." While it might not be for your whole household, at least your royals-loving teens might want to check out his co-star O'Connor as a young Prince Charles in the third and fourth seasons of Netflix's " The Crown ."

Zendaya's 'challengers' smash at box office, audience reviews more mixed, zendaya's 'challengers' game, set, match at box office ... audiences seem conflicted.

Zendaya 's got a major win to celebrate ... her new tennis movie "Challengers" is on pace to smash the competition at the box office -- though audience reaction seems more mixed.

Deadline reports the movie's headed for a $15.2 million opening ... nearly doubling the next highest opening -- that movie's called "Unsung Hero," and the trade publication says is headed for an $8 million weekend.

The outlet's telling "Challengers" producers to hold their horses though ... 'cause $15 million's pretty far from the reported $50+M budget this flick carries.

And, in case you're wondering ... Deadline says PostTrak -- a data company that talks to movie audiences as they leave the theater -- confirmed people are coming out to see Zendaya. They say 55% of respondents came because of her.

But, whether those audiences enjoyed the flick ... kinda unclear at this point. According to Rotten Tomatoes , 88% of critics enjoyed the movie -- much higher than the 77% of audience members who said the same.

77% is still pretty high ... but -- with a movie this anticipated -- 1 in every 4 reviewers bombing the flick doesn't exactly bode well for attracting future audiences.

Of course, many know the movie from the sexual tension in the trailer ... including a scene where two men kiss Zendaya's neck. It's been on people's calendars for a while now because of it -- and, perhaps early audiences built the flick up too much in their heads.

Bottom line ... this weekend's box office match is done -- but, some viewers are already labeling the movie a fault!!!

Teamwork is demonstrated, but the movie also asks viewers to root for criminals to succeed in a big robbery; there are no consequences, and, in fact, the robbers are hailed for their skill.

Positive Role Models

The team is loyal to Mason and looks up to him, so he's a role model in a certain regard, but, other than his skills at stealing and finding ways out of trouble, he's not very admirable.

Diverse Representations

The team of criminals consists of two White men, one White woman (a computer whiz played by Natali Yura), a Latino man (Mexican Italian actor Noel Gugliemi), and a Black man (Quavo). The latter two don't have quite as much to do as the other three; they're mostly on "crowd control" (i.e. watching hostages). Another White woman has a key role as an FBI agent. Several other characters of color appear in smaller/background roles.

What's the Story?

In CASH OUT, experienced thief Mason Goddard ( John Travolta ) plans to steal a priceless car from a wealthy collector. He and his crew -- including romantic partner Amelia ( Kristin Davis ) and brother Shawn ( Lukas Haas ), as well as Anton (Quavo), Link (Natali Yura), and Hector (Noel Gugliemi) -- pull off the job but discover that they've been betrayed. Months later, Mason is wallowing in his despair and wants to be left alone, but Shawn comes to him with a new plan: robbing a special safe deposit box. Mason refuses, but when Shawn goes ahead with the plan without him, Mason rushes to the scene to try to prevent things from going south. Of course, that's exactly what happens: The safe deposit box turns out to be a dummy, and the police and the FBI arrive on the scene earlier than expected. It's going to take all of Mason's expertise to get them out of this mess.

Is It Any Good?

This low-key bank heist movie has a few appealing qualities, but they're unfortunately outweighed by many more unappealing qualities, such as confusion, bewilderment, and boredom. Travolta proves that he's still a charismatic performer in Cash Out , adding several small touches to Mason that make the character feel rounded out, even if he's underwritten. There's some clever, swoopy camerawork that provides punch to a few scenes. And, during the bank heist, most of the characters seem aware of all the various cliches of the genre and do their best to work around them. (The bank manager explains that he's been through three or four other robberies.)

Unfortunately, there are also the old chestnuts, like the convenient "hacker" character, Link, who can solve almost any problem by clacking on her keyboard and speaking into a com link. Another character manages to break through several brick walls with a tiny hammer and a bullet wound in his shoulder. And Shawn is a little too on-the-noise as the "screw up" character, at one point setting his gun down and letting his attention drift from the hostage he's guarding. But the biggest problem is the romantic relationship between Mason and Davis' Amelia; it's difficult to describe without giving away one of the movie's major plot twists, but their dynamic never makes any sense, and they don't have much chemistry. Cash Out certainly had good intentions, and it's not a total failure, but it also doesn't quite fit the bill.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about Cash Out 's violence . How did it make you feel? Was it exciting? Shocking? What did the movie show or not show to achieve this effect? Why is that important?

Are viewers supposed to root for the robbers to succeed? Is that OK? Do they count as anti-heroes? Why, or why not?

How is drinking portrayed? Is it glamorized? Are there consequences?

What is the relationship like between brothers Mason and Shawn? How is it similar to or different from your own relationships?

‘We Grown Now’: Nothing shy in this Chi-Town

Minhal baig’s sentimental drama about two boys in chicago’s cabrini-green housing project hammers home its themes.

“We Grown Now” is a handsome, heavy-footed nostalgia piece that takes place in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green public housing project in October 1992, when the neighborhood became infamous as the setting of two horrors. The first was the killing of 7-year-old Dantrell Davis, who was shot as he walked to school. Then, just three days later, Cabrini-Green was featured as the backdrop of “Candyman,” a cult flick about a vengeful spirit who stalks the complex.

Written and directed by Minhal Baig, “We Grown Now” touches on the former and skips the latter, a hint that she isn’t capturing a moment as much as pruning it to her interests. The filmmaker only wants to view this world through the sentimental lens of two boys, Malik (Blake Cameron James) and Eric (Gian Knight Ramirez), who don’t yet realize that Dantrell’s death will lead to the dissolution of their friendship and the demolition of their 16-story tower. It’s a simple, gentle tale that’s told beautifully but feels hollow — like a eulogy for an acquaintance.

Malik and Eric’s story starts with a strong opening sequence where the kids drag an abandoned mattress down 12 flights of stairs to the playground. Straightaway, we’re taken in by the noise and energy of their block: the sounds of squeaky shoes and honking horns, the vicarious joy of watching children tumble gymnastically over the camera to land on a heap of tires and springs. But Baig, who was born in Chicago, is trying to shoehorn a semi-authentic drama into her reverie. Too soon, her young leads settle down into forced conversations about life, art, death and their own futures. Malik, the slightly sweeter of the pair, waxes that he dreams of a two-bedroom house where his mom (Jurnee Smollett) can grow her own tomatoes, a hobby she never claims to want herself. I didn’t buy it at first — what 10-year old prioritizes a garden over any other fantasy? — and I believed it even less after the script repeated it two more times.

This is a snapshot type of film that’s more about mood than momentum. The dialogue is all thesis statements. When three generations of characters all talk pretty much the same — “One of these days, he’s going to get killed,” “This neighborhood’s just not the same anymore,” “They treat us like roaches in our own home” — that’s just the voice of the writer. Don’t get me started on the two times the boys bellow into the sky: “We exist!”

Still, cinematographer Pat Scola has a great eye. At least half a dozen shots are flat-out fantastic, and we visually pick up on everything we need to know about Malik’s roots in the building by the fact that his grandmother (S. Epatha Merkerson) managed to drill dozens of framed family portraits into their apartment’s cinder block walls. The lens casts such a warm glow over everything that a close-up of a heap of pencil shavings could practically start a fire. All the while, the score’s violins command attention, at first frolicking like gulls that just swooped in from Lake Michigan, then doing their utmost to add emotional oomph to a slender plot.

In the most memorable sequence, Malik and Eric play hooky and head downtown to visit the Art Institute of Chicago, just as Ferris Bueller and Cameron Frye did before them. It’s a sharp and playful provocation. Don’t these lower-income boys deserve a day off, too? Absolutely — but did they have to pose in front of the same Georges Seurat?

The contrast between the two directors’ styles is telling. In “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” John Hughes cuts between Cameron’s blank expression and an impressionist oil portrait of a child, using visual language to say that Cameron feels blurry, too. Baig is more declarative. Her kids instead turn to the artist Walter Ellison’s painting of a train station and spend a full minute commenting on its socioeconomic power dynamics.

Baig is being sincere when she insists that a place is made by its people. If only her version of Cabrini-Green felt inhabited by actual people. As the end credits roll, we enjoy vintage photographs of its former residents now scattered to the wind. These old faces have a candor we could use more of in the film.

PG. At area theaters. Thematic material and language. 93 minutes.

John Travolta doesn’t act much anymore. Call it semi-retirement. On the rare occasion when someone talks him into taking up his old position before the camera, it’s always either a favor for a pal who needs a job or an exercise in poor judgment that raises some financing for a bomb that otherwise would never be made. This is the only reason I can think of for a trash wallow called Cash Out.

In this time waster, the star plays Mason Goddard, a thug with a penchant for masterminding major heists like bank robberies, and an idiot brother with a talent for screwing them up. For suspense, Mason spends his life planning and negotiating chief larcenies and figuring out ingenious ways to make them work. For laughs, he’s got a part-time girlfriend named Amelia ( Kristin Davis ) who works for the FBI without his knowing it. (Pretty stupid for a criminal on the most-wanted list.) Amelia works hard to catch him with a pleasant side effect of champagne, caviar and sex. First, we see Mason trying to steal a valuable, once-in-a-lifetime sports car. He gets caught, and the experience so unnerves him that he retires and moves to an island to drink beer by the case and let himself go to pot, in more ways than one.

Next, his idiot brother Shawn ( Lukas Haas ) tries in vain to talk Mason into making a comeback with one last “sure-fire”  caper—stealing from a bank in downtown Seattle a safety deposit box containing the combination for a fortune in cryptocurrency. When Shawn’s plan goes south, it’s up to Mason to rescue his kid brother while the cops and the FBI surround the bank, all under the command of Mason’s old lover, Amy. As the dumb plot thickens, so does this preposterous couple’s romance. While waiting for reinforcements, she orders a pile of boxes and serves the crooks and their nine hostages pizzas. You can sum it up with a few smiles, a weak premise that never pays off, and a narrative that is nothing more or less than a big piece of zero.

The moronic, one-dimensional screenplay by Dipo Oseni and Doug Richardson (two credits to forget immediately) is awkward and clumsy, and the jerky direction is by someone with the pseudonym IVES. I don’t blame him for wanting to keep his real identity a secret. It would be a shame if it got out. It’s nice to see Kristin Davis in a larger role than just a supporting sidekick on Sex and the City. As for Travolta, he shuffles through the whole thing scruffy and bald, without bothering to reveal anything about the character he plays. Cash Out provides a paycheck for John Travolta, but it’s nothing to write home about for the weary audience that suffers through it. If nobody cares enough to stage a career intervention, then it’s now up to John Travolta to rescue himself.

Movies & tv | movie review: ‘challengers’ sizzles with bubbling ferocity.

A woman holds a man's face as she looks in his eyes intently

By the time Luca Guadagnino’s erotically charged tennis film “Challengers” reaches its breathless, sweaty, pulse-pounding and deeply satisfying climax, you’ll be reaching for a cigarette, so to speak. Rarely is a film so sensorially captivating, every element of cinema, including script, cinematography, editing, score and performance blending together to create such a fizzy, frenzied brew, a chemical reaction of rage and lust sizzling with bubbling ferocity.

“Challengers” is a movie about bodies: sexy, strong, scarred bodies; bodies in glorious motion, crumpling under force, and drawn together over space and time, again and again. During a hard-fought match at a New Rochelle tournament, our players — which include the two men on the court and one woman, spectating on the sidelines — engage in body talk, communicating with gestures, glances, grunts and gasps, expressing what’s been left unsaid between them.

It’s the ultimate example of the concept that tennis isn’t just hitting a ball, it’s a relationship. This bit of wisdom was espoused by teen tennis phenom Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) 13 years prior to this match; now she watches this relationship unfold as two men smash the ball back and forth in front of her. They are her husband, Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), and her ex, Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor). Art is a honed, sculpted god, taped, gelled and optimized under Tashi’s watchful eye; Patrick is a grungy tennis bum, sleeping in his car, scamming sandwiches off sympathetic officials, and places to crash on Tinder. Over the course of each set, we’ll come to understand the complex relationship between this trio.

Two men talk animatedly

The script is the debut of playwright and novelist Justin Kuritzkes, who happens to be married to Celine Song, Oscar nominated this year for her debut feature, “Past Lives,” which also features a woman caught between two men, weighing passionate connection against pragmatic concerns. Where Song’s film was about the power and beauty of silence and patience, Kuritzkes’ script is hyperactive, the characters smart, cutting and acerbic, simultaneously deeply romantic and cynical. On a structural level, the screenplay can’t stop moving either. The central tennis match serves as a framing device for a series of flashbacks starting with the characters’ summer before college and covering every angst-ridden tangle in between.

But it’s Guadagnino’s filmmaking that elevates the material to truly transcendent heights. The film is shot with crisp, epic clarity by cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, whose camera continually draws triangles between our players, and collaborates brilliantly with editor Marco Costa, who cuts in time with the throbbing techno score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

The match starts with extreme wide shots, mannered and removed, before the camera swoops in on Tashi as the beat drops, zeroing in on the woman for whom these men have always been competing. But as we come back to the match, again and again, the camera gets closer to Art and Patrick, becoming erratic and experimental. By the end, we’re seeing shots from the point of view of the players, the court and even the ball, wildly flying back and forth across the net, batted around like every person in this triangle has been by the others at some point.

It’s through this tennis metaphor that Kuritzkes and Guadagnino explore the way power, desire and ambition are woven throughout intimate relationships in a fetishistic way. The ruthlessly professional Tashi seems to get off on psychologically and sexually controlling Art and Patrick, which the chaotic Patrick resists and to which Art happily submits. Their marriage is one of his surrender to her wishes as an act of pure love and devotion, even though she is helplessly drawn to Patrick’s dancing, destructive flame. The sexually omnivorous and opportunistic Patrick, for all his indecision, sees the situation clearly, but then again, they all seem to. They just want what they want.

Guadagnino is one of our greatest auteurs of desire, especially the forbidden kind, and “Challengers” is a deeply erotic and sexy movie even though it doesn’t have all that much sex. Like everything else — conversation, arguments, catharsis — the sex is subsumed into tennis. Still, it is an incredibly lusty film, and it’s rare to enjoy this kind of explosive screen chemistry among all three performers.

Faist, who comes from theater and dance, moves with beautiful intention, and Mukdeeprom’s camera regards his every angle with fascination. In contrast, O’Connor embodies the kind of louche, grimy and utterly dangerous sexuality that most women find infuriating and irresistible. Zendaya is as enthrallingly intelligent, mysterious and unpredictable as she has ever been, and it’s easily her best performance.

“Challengers” is the kind of sexy, engrossing somewhat twisted romance we don’t see enough of these days, a thrilling film, thrillingly rendered in its layered storytelling expressed in the purest cinematic form. Take advantage while you can.
