Liberty University Requirements for Admission

Choose your test.

What are Liberty University's admission requirements? While there are a lot of pieces that go into a college application, you should focus on only a few critical things:

  • GPA requirements
  • Testing requirements, including SAT and ACT requirements
  • Application requirements

In this guide we'll cover what you need to get into Liberty University and build a strong application.

School location: Lynchburg, VA

This school is also known as: LU

Admissions Rate: 55.5%

If you want to get in, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious their requirements are.

The acceptance rate at Liberty University is 55.5% . For every 100 applicants, 56 are admitted.

image description

This means the school is moderately selective . The school expects you to meet their requirements for GPA and SAT/ACT scores, but they're more flexible than other schools. If you exceed their requirements, you have an excellent chance of getting in. But if you don't, you might be one of the unlucky minority that gets a rejection letter.

Liberty University GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school's average GPA for its current students.

Average GPA: 3.59

The average GPA at Liberty University is 3.59 .

image description

(Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA.

With a GPA of 3.59, Liberty University requires you to be around average in your high school class. You'll need a mix of A's and B's, and very few C's. If you have a lower GPA, you can compensate with harder courses like AP or IB classes. This will help boost your weighted GPA and show your ability to take college classes.

If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.59, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate . This will help you compete effectively against other applicants who have higher GPAs than you.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Only a few schools require the SAT or ACT, but many consider your scores if you choose to submit them.

Liberty University hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Otherwise, don't."

Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Liberty University will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students. We therefore recommend that you consider taking the SAT or ACT, and doing well.

Liberty University SAT Requirements

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school's average score.

Average SAT: 1166

The average SAT score composite at Liberty University is a 1166 on the 1600 SAT scale.

This score makes Liberty University Competitive for SAT test scores.

Liberty University SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1050, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1270. In other words, a 1050 on the SAT places you below average, while a 1270 will move you up to above average .

Here's the breakdown of SAT scores by section:

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

Liberty University has the Score Choice policy of "Highest Section."

This is also known as "superscoring." This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. Of all the scores they receive, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all SAT test dates you submit .

Click below to learn more about how superscoring critically affects your test strategy.

For example, say you submit the following 3 test scores:

Even though the highest total you scored on any one test date was 1000, Liberty University will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 1000 to 1400 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and Liberty University forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1166, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it . You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on. This will give you the highest Superscore possible.

Liberty University ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, Liberty University likely doesn't have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 25

The average ACT score at Liberty University is 25. This score makes Liberty University Moderately Competitive for ACT scores.

image description

The 25th percentile ACT score is 21, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 29.

Even though Liberty University likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 21 or below, you'll have a harder time getting in, unless you have something else impressive in your application.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 25 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

We weren't able to find the school's exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send in to Liberty University, so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 25.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

Liberty University considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is moderately selective, strong academic performance will almost guarantee you admission . Scoring a 1270 SAT or a 29 ACT or above will nearly guarantee you admission. Because the school admits 55.5% of all applicants, being far above average raises the admission rate for you to nearly 100%.

If you can achieve a high SAT/ACT score, the rest of your application essentially doesn't matter. You still need to meet the rest of the application requirements, and your GPA shouldn't be too far off from the school average of 3.59. But you won't need dazzling extracurriculars and breathtaking letters of recommendation to get in. You can get in based on the merits of your score alone.

But if your score is a 1050 SAT or a 21 ACT and below, you have a good chance of being one of the unlucky few to be rejected.

Admissions Calculator

Here's our custom admissions calculator. Plug in your numbers to see what your chances of getting in are. Pick your test: SAT ACT

General Rules

Liberty University has determined that graduate students will use APA 7’s formatting guidelines for professional papers. To assist you, Liberty University's Writing Center provides a template paper and a  sample paper .

For professional papers, the following four sections are required:

  • Title Page with Running Head
  • Abstract with Keywords
  • Reference List

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you format your paper:

  • Fonts  - LU recommends that papers be typed in 12-point Times New Roman or 11-point Calibri fonts.
  • Use only one space at the end of each sentence in the body of your paper.
  • In general, APA papers should be double spaced throughout. A list of exceptions can be found here.
  • To make sure that your paper is double spaced throughout,  select the text ,  right click , select ' Paragraph ,' and look under the section ' Line Spacing ' as shown below:

undefined

  • Margins/Alignment  - Your paper should use 1-inch margins on standard-sized paper (8.5' X 11'). Make sure that you use  Align Left  (CTRL + L) on the paper, except for the title page.
  •   Indentation – The first sentence in each new paragraph in the body of the paper should be indented a half inch. The abstract, however, should not be indented. References use hanging indentation .
  • Headings:   Please note that all headings are in title case. Level 1 headings should be centered (and in bold), and Level 2 and 3 headings should be left-aligned (and in bold or bold italic, respectively). Level 4 and 5 headings are indented like regular paragraphs. An example of formatting headings in a paper is available here

Title Page: When setting up the professional title page, please note the following elements should be present on the page:

  • There is no limit to the number of words in the title.
  • Add an extra blank double-spaced line between the title and author’s name.
  • Name of each author (centered)
  • Name of department and institution/affiliation (centered)
  • Place the author note in the bottom half of the title page. Center and bold the label “Author Note.” Align the paragraphs of the author note to the left. For an example, see the LU Writing Center template for graduate students here .
  • Page number in top right corner of the header, starting with page 1 on the title page
  • The running head is an abbreviated version of the title of your paper (or the full title if the title is already short).
  • Type the running head in all-capital letters.
  • Ensure the running head is no more than 50 characters, including spaces and punctuation.
  • The running head appears in the same format on every page, including the first page.
  • Do not use the label “Running head:” before the running head.
  • Align the running head to the left margin of the page header, across from the right-aligned page number.

Abstract Page: The abstract page includes the abstract and related keywords.

The abstract is a brief but comprehensive summary of your paper. Here are guidelines for formatting the abstract:

  • It should be the second page of a professional (graduate level) paper.
  • The first line should say “Abstract” centered and in bold.
  • The abstract should start one line below the section label.
  • It should be a single paragraph and should not be indented.
  • It should not exceed 250 words.

Keywords are used for indexing in databases and as search terms. Your keywords should capture the most important aspects of your paper in three to five words, phrases, or acronyms. Here are formatting guidelines:

  • Label “ Keywords ” one line below the abstract, indented and in italics (not bolded).
  • The keywords should be written on the same line as and one space after the label “ Keywords ”.
  • The keywords should be lowercase (but capitalize proper nouns) and not italic or bold.
  • Each keyword should be separated by a comma and a space and followed by a colon.
  • There should be no ending punctuation.

Tips When Writing Your College Essay for Liberty

Oct 15, 2020 • Rachel F.

Connect with us:

liberty university essay requirements

Applying to college is fun but can be stressful and overwhelming. There’s a lot of pressure on college applications because they will ultimately influence admissions decisions. I was once there too and completely understand how you feel. Writing college essays was always the trickiest part of the application process for me. When you apply to Liberty University, you are required to answer two different essay prompts:

  • Describe how your personal faith and beliefs contribute to your college search process. (Examples include reasons for choosing Liberty, background information about your personal faith and beliefs, or other information you deem relevant.)
  • Liberty’s mission is to develop Christ-centered leaders. Describe how you will contribute to this mission as a Liberty student. (Examples include interests in church or community service, personal achievements of goals, or other examples of what you hope to achieve as a student.)

With a word count of 100-150 for each prompt, you need to convey not only why you chose to apply to Liberty but also why you would be an asset as a student. Don’t freak out – I know it’s a lot to unpack in so few words, but I’ve been there and it’s not as intimidating as it may seem. From someone who was once in your shoes, here are a few tips for working on your essay.

  • Don’t just start writing

If you’re like me, there’s probably so much that you want to say, but it’s important to think about what you want to write before writing. My suggestion would be to make a list of your ideas and evaluate which are most important. From there, you can create an outline and maintain a consistent flow. How to start a college essay can be the hardest part, but brainstorming before you start writing can help you make sure the most important points are included. When creating your outline and brainstorming, make sure to stay on topic and focused on Liberty’s mission to develop Christ-centered leaders.

  • Keep it straight and to the point

Your essay is similar to an interview. When you’re in an interview, you never want to ramble because eventually the interviewer will tune out or not hear what’s important. The same goes for your college admissions essay. If you have run-on sentences or a lot of rambling, what you want the admissions department to know could get skipped over. Once you start writing, you’ll realize how much you want to include.

  • Be personal and honest

Your essay is not a school paper, so try not to write it like one. Have fun with it! Include a personal story or something that says more about who you are. While important, the admissions team is not grading your paper based off of grammar or writing style but they are looking to see how your personal faith and beliefs will contribute to the mission of Liberty. At the end of the day, your college essay is the biggest representation of who you are when it comes to your college application. Your essay is the chance to relay who you are beyond your test scores and transcripts. It is essentially the selling point as to why Liberty should accept you. That being said, don’t false advertise. You should be completely honest in your college essay – don’t try to stretch the truth or exaggerate. When writing, be honest and be yourself!

  • Get outside perspectives and seek advice

Your friends, family, and teachers all want you to succeed! Don’t be afraid to ask those around you for help because they will see things you don’t see. When I wrote my essay, I asked one of my teachers and a few college students to look over it for me. As a current college student looking back, I cannot recommend enough to reach out to someone already in college. They can help you tremendously with college applications, especially when it comes to writing your essay.
