If variety is the spice of life, then my over three decade illustration career has been a bowl of shrimp creole with an added dose of cayenne pepper! Working in diverse areas of science and medicine, from basic concepts to state-of-the-art molecular methods of action, has given me an appreciation for how quickly advances are made and how far our understanding has come in the last quarter century. All science is interrelated. The invention of a new surgical apparatus has implications not only for surgeons, but also for physiologists, pathologists and physical therapists, just to name a few medical specialties, as well as medical-legal specialists and government regulators. Drugs developed for one disease often end up treating another in an entirely different body system. The examples of cross-fertilization in science are endless, which is why I feel quite fortunate to have worked this long as a medical and scientific illustrator, and why I hope my projects continue to be as diverse and interesting as science itself.

We are interested in the fundamental mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease. Over the past century-plus, research has revealed specific proteins that misfold and are deposited in neurodegeneration, and recent discoveries have identified other molecular and cellular actors that seem to play a role in the development and progression of disease. However, despite these advances, disease-modifying therapies are limited.

To address this gap, we are examining neurodegeneration from new perspectives and making use of new technologies in our research. We study the genomic changes, or somatic mutations, that occur in brain cells during aging and disease. We examine how somatic mutations occur and what they can teach us about disease at the level of individual cells. Our research utilizes interdisciplinary approaches, including neurodegenerative disease biology, genomics, neuropathology, molecular biology, neuroscience, and computational biology. Our methods include the isolation of single cells, amplification of the genomes, single-cell genome sequencing, and analysis of the patterns found in each cell’s genome. We hope to use this knowledge to contribute to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for neurodegeneration.

Department of Neurology | Neuromuscular Medicine

Miller Laboratory

The Miller Laboratory is dedicated to understanding neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and dementias in order to develop new, effective, and safe treatments. We focus on translational neuroscience, new therapeutic approaches for neurodegenerative diseases, and precision medicine.

ALS Research

ALS Research

The Miller Lab seeks to understand the pathogenesis of ALS with basic studies focused on SOD1, C9ORF72, TBK-1,  miRNA, protein misfolding, protein kinetics, and genetic modifiers of disease. We employ RNA-targeted therapeutic strategies, mainly using antisense oligonucleotides.

Dementia Research

Dementia Research

The Miller Lab studies how the various isoforms of the protein tau affect neurodegeneration. We employ RNA-targeted therapeutic strategies using antisense oligonucleotides to develop therapies for dementias involving the tau protein as well as for TREM-2.

Making a Difference

This FDA decision means that people with SOD1 ALS now have access to a treatment that appears to slow down the neurodegenerative disease process and helps preserve motor function. This gives me hope that this could have a positive impact on the quality of life for people living with this rare form of ALS.” Timothy M. Miller, MD, PhD

Mary Beth Miller, PhD

Mary Beth Miller, PhD

Dr. Miller is a licensed clinical psychologist (LP) who specializes in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders. She is part of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and is also board certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine (diplomate of behavioral sleep medicine or DBSM). She received her doctorate from Oklahoma State University in 2015, after completing her clinical residency in the Brown University training consortium. She completed an NIAAA-funded postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University from 2015-2017 and began a faculty position at the University of Missouri in July 2017. Her research aims to enhance understanding of the etiology of substance use disorders in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of treatment. She is particularly interested in the interplay of substance use and sleep disorders and the process by which personalized feedback on one’s health and behaviors may facilitate behavior change.
