If you’ve made a New Year’s resolution, your plot for self-improvement probably kicks into gear sometime on Jan. 1, when the hangover wears off and the quest for the “new you” begins in earnest.

But if research on habit change is any indication, only about half of New Year’s resolutions are likely to make it out of January, much less last a lifetime.

As experts in positive psychology and literature , we recommend an unconventional but more promising approach.

We call it the “old year’s resolution.”

It combines insights from psychologists and America’s first self-improvement guru, Benjamin Franklin, who pioneered a habit-change model that was way ahead of its time.

With the “old year” approach, perhaps you can sidestep the inevitable challenges that come with traditional New Year’s resolutions and achieve lasting, positive changes.

A period to practice – and fail

Research has highlighted two potential pitfalls with New Year’s resolutions.

First, if you lack the confidence to invest in a full-fledged effort, failure to achieve the goal may become a self-fulfilling prophesy. Furthermore, if you maintain the change but perceive progress as unacceptably slow or inadequate, you may abandon the effort.

The old year’s resolution is different. Instead of waiting until January to start trying to change your life, you do a dry run before the New Year begins.

How does that work?

First, identify a change you want to make in your life. Do you want to eat better? Move more? Sock away more savings? Now, with Jan. 1 days away, start living according to your commitment. Track your progress. You might stumble now and then, but here’s the thing: You’re just practicing.

If you’ve ever rehearsed for a play or played scrimmages, you’ve used this kind of low-stakes practice to prepare for the real thing. Such experiences give us permission to fail.

Psychologist Carol Dweck and her colleagues have shown that when people see failure as the natural result of striving to achieve something challenging, they are more likely to persist to the goal.

However, if people perceive failure as a definitive sign that they are not capable – or even deserving – of success, failure can lead to surrender.

If you become convinced that you cannot achieve a goal, something called “ learned helplessness ” can result, which means you’re likely to abandon the endeavor altogether.

Many of us unintentionally set ourselves up for failure with our New Year’s resolutions. On Jan. 1, we jump right into a new lifestyle and, unsurprisingly, slip, fall, slip again – and eventually never get up.

The old year’s resolution takes the pressure off. It gives you permission to fail and even learn from failure. You can slowly build confidence, while failures become less of a big deal, since they’re all happening before the official “start date” of the resolution.

A gardener weeding one bed at a time

Long before he became one of America’s greatest success stories, Franklin devised a method that helped him overcome life’s inevitable failures – and could help you master your old year’s resolutions.

When he was still a young man, Franklin came up with what he called his “bold and arduous project of arriving at moral perfection.” With charming confidence, he set out to master 13 virtues, including temperance, frugality, chastity, industry, order and humility.

In a typically Franklinian move, he applied a little strategy to his efforts, concentrating on one virtue at a time. He likened this approach to that of a gardener who “does not attempt to eradicate all the bad herbs at once, which would exceed his reach and his strength, but works on one of the beds at a time.”

In his autobiography , where he described this project in detail, Franklin did not say that he tied his project to a new year. He also did not give up when he slipped once – or more than once.

“I was surpris’d to find myself so much fuller of faults than I had imagined; but I had the satisfaction of seeing them diminish,” Franklin wrote.

He made his progress visible in a book, where he recorded his slip-ups. One page – perhaps only a hypothetical example – shows 16 of them tied to “temperance” in a single week. (Instead of marking faults, we recommend recording successes in line with the work of habit expert B.J. Fogg , whose research suggests that celebrating victories helps to drive habit change.)

Repeated failures might discourage someone enough to abandon the endeavor altogether. But Franklin kept at it – for years. To Franklin, it was all about perspective: This effort to make himself better was a “project,” and projects take time.

‘A better and a happier man’

Many years later, Franklin admitted that he never was perfect , despite his best efforts. His final assessment, however, is worth remembering:

“But, on the whole, tho’ I never arrived at the perfection I had been so ambitious of obtaining, but fell far short of it, yet I was, by the endeavour, a better and a happier man than I otherwise should have been if I had not attempted it.”

Treating self-improvement as a project with no rigid time frame worked for Franklin. In fact, his scheme probably helped him succeed wildly in business, science and politics . Importantly, he also found immense personal satisfaction in the endeavor: “This little artifice, with the blessing of God,” he wrote , was the key to “the constant felicity of his life, down to his 79th year, in which this is written.”

You can enjoy the same success Franklin did if you start on your own schedule – now, during the old year – and treat self-improvement not as a goal with a starting date but as an ongoing “project.”

It might also help to remember Franklin’s note to himself on a virtue he called, coincidentally, “Resolution”: “Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve.”

My New Year Resolution Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

People celebrate the beginning of a new year to give a fresh start to their lives. They take new year resolutions because everyone made mistakes in the previous year that they want to avoid in the future or to do something new in the next year. Resolutions assist us in staying focused on our choices.

When this year began, I resolved to focus on areas where I am weak or lack confidence. This covered my weak subject areas, my extreme engagement in watching web series, my inability to manage time for other activities etc. I made a timetable which I reviewed and modified every week, such that I accommodated all my activities and devoted adequate time to them. At the end of the year, I could feel positive results and felt proud of myself for sticking to my new year resolutions.

The New year reminds us that time is not permanent. It moves silently and stops for no one. A single goal or a list of goals one wants to accomplish or get rid of might form a new year's resolution. They give us a new chance to achieve something in our life, whether it is related to our personal life, professional life or academic life. For a resolution to work in our lives, we must be a person with strong determination.

Importance of Resolutions | New year resolutions are important for various reasons, some of them being:-

All activities that waste time and result in nothing are eliminated and replaced with new ones that never waste time and result in positive changes.

Someone who does not make any resolutions for the new year is similar to someone walking somewhere without knowing the way.

No matter how big or little a resolution is, it is important to consider its purpose and the results it will produce when put into practice in our daily lives.

My Resolutions | I have also made resolutions previously, but like everyone else, I break them. But this time, I will keep my resolutions and put more effort into changing myself. I made a list of resolutions that I plan to begin following next year. They consist of sticking to a set schedule for time management, avoiding junk food and putting a priority on healthy food for better health, and, most importantly, completing courses before exams.

A New year is not only about parties and celebrations or spending money lavishly, but it is also an excellent opportunity to start over and make changes in our life. Having a new year's resolution is a thing to be proud of and to share with others. It is what we promised to do at the end of the year. Making a new year's resolution is crucial because I need a goal or purpose to live.

Different People, Different Resolutions

Before moving forward, it is important to keep in mind that the changes must be fair and respectable. A resolution for the coming year is an idea that better defines and represents you. A new year's resolution is different for every person. Some may believe that resolutions work, while others may feel that they do nothing. A mature man will have the resolution to avoid bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. For students, it may include exercising daily, going to bed early, eating healthy food etc. Having a new year resolution sounds as easy as ABC but applying it throughout the year is a big task as the world is full of distractions.

My New Year's Resolutions - 2021 by John - December 2020 Scholarship Essay

Academic success starts with taking care of my body and mind within the framework of God. My high school focused on a well-balanced life including mind, body, and spirit. And I believe all of these are necessary in order to have a successful life. My New Year’s resolutions are to refresh my relationship with God and make decisions to keep myself healthy. If I can do these things, I will be successful at my third New Year’s resolution of success in the classroom.

First, I want to improve my relationship with God, I want to continue and enhance my daily prayers. I accepted Christ as my savior in 2019. After suffering from a prolonged illness of mononucleosis during my junior year of high school; I recovered and achieved success during my last year of high school and was accepted into an awesome university. My resolution is to live in a manner that demonstrates my love of the Lord, family, and friends.

Secondly, I want to take care of my body and stay healthy. I don’t want to get Covid-19 again or pass it to others, I plan to continue to always wear my mask and properly keep my distance from others. During my freshman fall semester I put on extra weight. I am no longer competing in my swimming and my body is not as fit. I stayed in the dorms most of the time for virtual classes and exercised inconsistently. My resolution is to exercise more consistently eat healthier foods, so I may have the needed energy for late-night studies, focused reading, memorization and learning of facts for my college courses.

Third, I resolve to be successful in the classroom. I plan to know from day 1 of spring semester when assignments are due, when tests will be given, the process of taking tests for particular classes and whether the test is online and if so, when it opens and when it closes. I learned a valuable lesson during fall semester that the window of beginning test taking is limited. I plan to manage my time in a way that I’m on top of the assignments and not catching up. By knowing when assignments are due, I plan to never be late or miss any assignment.

After 2020 , many people might want to ditch New Year’s resolutions altogether. For some, getting through the day feels like more than enough. Trying to reach some audacious goal feels laughable. Experts say that after this difficult year, resolutions might undergo a makeover — and this is a good thing.

“I do think it is a healthy practice to look at your life and identify ways to grow. We know that people don’t often succeed at New Year’s resolutions because they tend to be lofty and require really big, sweeping changes,” Sophie Lazarus, a clinical psychologist at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, told TODAY. “(After) people have been asked to adapt to so many things, setting these big goals is setting ourselves up to be discouraged.”

That doesn’t mean that Lazarus believes people should skip thinking about things they’d like to change next year. She just thinks they should take a more reasonable approach.

“We should be paying attention to our lives and making more small, incremental changes that benefit our well-being,” she said.

Dr. Deborah Gilboa, a resiliency expert based in Pittsburgh, agrees that this year, in particular, people might want to reconsider resolutions.

“It’s a great time to reflect on lessons learned,” she told TODAY. “We have the opportunity to look back and see ‘Oh I would have never done that if it wasn’t for everything that happened and I want to keep it.’”

While 2020 did disrupt so much, many people adapted and those new habits might be good ones. Families might realize that game night is a tradition that should stay even after coronavirus restrictions lessen. “Everybody I talked to has said to me some things that they learned that they don't want to forget,” Gilboa said.

While people often joke about resolutions being broken only a few days into January, Gilboa believes there could be some benefit at looking at what one resolved last year and adapting that. Instead of setting hard-to-attain, lofty goals, people can focus on simply what they want to do differently.

“A lot of New Year’s resolutions don’t age well, but New Year’s reflections can age really well,” she said. “You have the option (this year) to come up with true resolutions, things that you are resolute about. Like ‘My family will continue to be my priority’ or ‘I’ve seen the importance of health and I’m going to carry that forward with me.’”

Lazarus hopes that if people set resolutions or goals , that they don’t involve self-criticism.

Health & Wellness To reach a big health or fitness goal, start small, say experts

“We could really benefit from having our goals come from a place of kindness and having a greater sense of well-being about what is going to be healthy and positive,” she said. “There is so much stress and lots of things that are out of our control … Being really harsh and critical, that only increases your stress.”

If people struggle with being kinder to themselves, she suggests they think of what they might say to a friend or family member who was being hard on themselves.

“Give yourself the same grace you would give to a friend,” she said. “It is wise to adjust our expectations to the current circumstances.”

Lazarus said practicing mindfulness can help and that doesn’t have to look like meditation. People could simply try being in the moment when they do something, such as take a shower. This increased mindfulness can help people both when thinking of self-evaluation but also when grappling with pandemic stressors. For those still looking for concrete ways to better evaluate their efforts, Lazarus has some advice.

“There are two things that would be helpful if you are trying to set some type of resolution: Look honestly at your capacity. How much energy and time and space do you have? Really adapt your goal to that,” she said “Really look at your life. What is most important to you? What matters most or do you value? If you set a goal or make a small change that should be related to that.”

The start of a new year can be an ideal time to set self-improvement goals. According to one 2021 survey , half of participants who made New Year's resolutions aimed to improve their fitness, while 44% aimed to save money and 39% hoped to improve their diet.

Good New Year's resolutions offer realistic strategies to help people kickstart constructive habits. The following New Year's resolution ideas can help college students improve their health, mental wellness, and work-life-school balance .

1. Participate More During Class

It can be tempting to succumb to the anonymity of online learning and large lecture courses. However, studies show that students who participate more in class perform better academically . Asking questions and contributing to discussions may help students feel engaged, retain information, and establish rapport with professors and classmates.

2. Get More Involved on Campus

Organizations like sports teams, community service groups, and cultural clubs can provide students with diverse, enriching opportunities. This may be especially important for commuters or students who don't have as much time to socialize on campus.

Getting involved on campus can mean discovering creative outlets, exploring cultural identities, engaging in political advocacy, serving the community, or building social networks with learners who share your academic or personal interests.

3. Create a Better Work-Life-School Balance

Many students struggle to balance academic stressors and work obligations with social relationships and personal development. While finding a good balance can be a lifelong process, college students shouldn't neglect rest and recreation. College campuses can be exceptionally social places. Forming relationships is often easier for individuals who live on campus, but commuters also have opportunities to socialize in classes, labs, discussion sections, and common spaces.

Many colleges offer affordable counseling services for students seeking professional guidance. Other students may prefer to promote their mental wellness through healing activities like yoga and meditation , or through creative outlets like painting and knitting.

12. Get a Part-Time Job

Climbing tuition costs mean that students are under more financial duress than ever. The Education Data Initiative reports that, as of 2021, 43.2 million American students and graduates had taken out student loans to pay for school, borrowing an average of almost $40,000 each.

Many students find part-time jobs to try and keep up with tuition costs, loans, and other expenses, often working in retail, food service, or childcare. Students may also be able to find on-campus jobs or paid internships related to their academic discipline.

13. Apply for New Scholarships

Students can find grants and scholarships offered by various organizations and foundations. These are often designated for students who have specific ethnic backgrounds, areas of study, or geographic locations, as well as military status or financial need. Students can research their eligibility based on these qualifications.

Often, scholarship programs require applicants to write essays, which can be a time-consuming process. However, scholarships may award thousands of dollars, so applying can be worthwhile for persistent applicants.

2020 was a rough one. Here’s how to make goals for 2021 that feel both satisfying and doable.

After the unpredictable, torrid year we’ve had, the idea of making New Year’s resolutions for 2021 might seem a tad overwhelming.

“I am keeping the bar so low,” the comedian Robyn Schall joked during an interview with The New York Times this month.

“No goals,” she said, laughing. “Just one day at a time.”

Schall, 36, became internet-famous in November after she posted a video on TikTok about her unfulfilled resolutions from last December, a list she read aloud while “half-crying, half-laughing” with a glass of wine in hand.

“Travel more,” she wrote. (She has been sequestered in “the tiniest of tiny” studio apartments in Manhattan.) “Make more money.” (Schall has been unemployed since March.) “Be more social.” (Nope.) “Spend more time with my grandma.” (Both of her grandmothers died this year.)

Even if you’re the type of person who is put off by New Year’s resolutions, experts say that in 2021 — or any year, really — writing out one or two specific, small and attainable goals can help develop confidence and a sense of pride, improving your well-being.

And right now we could all use a little more positivity in our lives.

Here’s how to get started.

Think about your motivations.

Just because it’s the first of January doesn’t mean you will automatically feel motivated to start a new habit.

“You’re not going to sustain a behavior change unless you have internal motivation,” said Sara L. Dolan, an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

So when making New Year’s resolutions, consider what changes you’d like to make, but also why you want to make them, Dr. Dolan advised. What makes you feel committed to reaching your goal?

For example, if you know you’d like to lose weight, is it because you’re trying to conform to society’s standards about body size? Is it because your doctor told you to do it? Those are external motivators, which are less likely to help you reach your goal. On the other hand, if losing weight appeals to you because eating healthy foods and exercising make you feel physically and mentally better, those are internal motivations that will make you more likely to build new, long-term habits.

Pick bite-sized goals that are actually achievable.

For New Year’s resolutions to work, avoid pie-in-the-sky wishes and focus instead on goals that are doable and easily measurable. Resolving to get healthier, for example, might be too vague.

“If you set this giant, nonspecific, unattainable goal, what motivation are you going to have to ever try again if you fail?” Dr. Dolan said.

If you want to get stronger but haven’t exercised in years, don’t aim to start working out at the gym three days a week for an hour at a time.

Instead, whittle your expectations and start by going to the gym once a week for just half an hour or less, Dr. Dolan advised. If you can do this consistently for a couple of months, try going twice a week. Each small success can help propel you toward bigger ones.

Michelle Gielan, author of the book “Broadcasting Happiness: The Science of Igniting and Sustaining Positive Change,” said that she bought an elliptical exercise machine on Craigslist this year and made a goal to use it for just 15 minutes a day. The short time limit felt manageable to her, and once she actually started her workout, she would often keep going for an additional 10 minutes.

“Start small; pick some small goal that you almost know you’re going to accomplish,” Gielan said. “Your brain gets a win and that win releases all these positive neurochemicals. And then we want to do it again.”

Make a plan, not a resolution.

Having a goal is great, but how will you achieve it?

For example, if you want to make more money, what are the steps you need to take in order to do that and how much extra income would you need to hit your goal? If you’re employed, is overtime a possibility or are you aiming for a promotion? Do you need to go back to school to learn a different set of skills? The more you dissect your goal, the easier it is to break it into actionable steps.

And you’ll be more likely to follow through with your goal if those steps are detailed, said Charles Duhigg, the author of “The Power of Habit,” a book that explores the science of habit formation.

A 2011 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, for instance, found that employees of a large company who were prompted to write down the date and time they planned to get a company flu shot were statistically more likely to get it than those who received reminders for the shot but who weren’t prompted to write down their plan.

“Oftentimes also, when you come up with a plan, you anticipate what the obstacles are going to be,” Duhigg said. “When people change sustainably, it’s because they anticipated where they’ll fail and they’ve come up with some kind of recovery plan in advance.”

Shorten your list and write it down.

If you have several types of goals, choose one that resonates with you the most, the experts said. (Maybe choose two if you’re feeling ambitious.)

Having just one goal and a plan for achieving it is more important than having lots of vague goals, they said.

Next, write everything down.

This will not only help you think through your goals, but also help make them more memorable, said Katy Milkman, a behavioral scientist and professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and the author of “How to Change,” a forthcoming book on the science of achieving goals.

Telling your goals to other people will also help keep you accountable, she added.

“The more deeply you engage with them, the more likely you are to follow through,” Dr. Milkman said.

When writing out your goal, the way you phrase it might also make a difference, according to a Swedish study published this month. Researchers found that it may be more effective to frame your plans in terms of what you are going to do versus what you shouldn’t do. For instance, say that you want to “go to bed a half an hour earlier” instead of saying you want to “stop going to bed so late.”

Cut yourself some slack.

In the end, 2020 has been a rough year, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself when trying to meet your goal.

Research shows that people are more likely to pursue their goals during times that feel like new beginnings in their lives, Dr. Milkman said. Examples might include Mondays, birthdays, the first of the month or other milestones like starting a new job or moving to a different state.

So don’t give up if you don’t fulfill your New Year’s resolutions.

Encourage yourself with gentle reminders — using your phone alarm can sometimes be helpful in nudging you to hit the gym or get ready for bed — and if money is tight, set yourself up for success by choosing goals that are inexpensive to achieve, said Dr. Joel L. Young, medical director of the Rochester Center for Behavioral Medicine in Rochester Hills, Mich.

Even if you don’t accomplish your goal as quickly as you want to or in the exact way you had planned, it’s still important to celebrate that you’re working toward making a positive change.

“In a year like this we need to give ourselves more grace and forgiveness and have more self-compassion,” Dr. Dolan said.

The start of a new year is the perfect time to turn a new page, which is probably why so many people make New Year's resolutions. The new year often feels like a fresh start and a great opportunity to change bad habits and establish new routines that will help you grow psychologically, emotionally, socially, physically, or intellectually.

Of course, resolutions are much easier to make than to keep, and by the end of March, many of us have abandoned our resolve and settled back into our old patterns. Part of the problem may be that we do not know how to keep New Year's resolutions, despite our good intentions.

Why We Make Resolutions

Why do millions of people resolve to change at the beginning of every year? A series of studies into what researchers have dubbed the "fresh start effect" has looked at how temporal landmarks can motivate aspirational behaviors.

The new year feels like a new beginning, which is why so many people often set lofty resolutions during these times. While this practice can sometimes lead people to bite off more than they can chew, going after resolutions can also present great opportunities to overcome struggles with willpower , determination, and ingenuity.

Perceptions of the success of these resolutions vary. In one study, only around 12% of people who make New Year's resolutions felt that they were successful in achieving their goals. Some of the most common resolutions include:

  • Losing weight
  • Sticking to a healthier diet
  • Exercising regularly
  • Making better financial choices
  • Quitting smoking
  • Spending more time with family

While many people feel that they don't achieve their resolution goals , one study showed that those who set New Year's resolutions are 10 times more likely to actually change their behavior than people who don't make these yearly goals.

So how long do resolutions last? While most surveys suggest that the majority of people don't stick with their New Year's resolutions for long, one 2020 study found that 55% of participants considered themselves successful at sustaining resolutions after a year.

In that study, researchers found that people were more successful at keeping approach-oriented goals (such as changing eating or sleeping habits) rather than avoidance-oriented ones (which are motivated by a desire to avoid something). 

Even if resolutions don't always stick, that doesn't mean that resolutions aren't worth making. One survey conducted by YouGov found that people who planned to make New Year's resolutions were more optimistic about the future.

So, what can you do to make it more likely that you will keep your next resolution? The following tips may help you beat the odds.

Choose a Specific Goal

Every year, millions of adults resolve to "lose weight," "be more productive," or "get in shape" during the next year. Instead of selecting such an ambiguous goal, focus on something more concrete that you can realistically set your sights on. In other words, choose a very specific, achievable goal.

For example, you might commit to losing 10 pounds, making daily to-do lists, or running a half-marathon. Be sure to make your goal realistic rather than drastic. Choosing a concrete, achievable goal also gives you the opportunity to plan exactly how you are going to accomplish (and stick to) your goal over the course of the year.

Limit Your Resolutions

While you might have a long list of potential New Year's resolutions, Richard Wiseman, a professor of psychology at Hertfordshire University, suggests that you pick just one and focus your energies on it rather than spreading yourself too thin among a number of different objectives.  

Focus on One Goal at a Time

Achieving even one small goal can boost your belief in yourself. For larger goals, consider breaking them apart into manageable chunks to work on one at a time. The American Psychological Association (APA) also suggests focusing on just one behavior at a time is more likely to lead to long-term success.

Taking on too much all at once can be daunting. It can be particularly difficult because establishing new behavioral patterns takes time and sustained effort. Focusing on one specific goal makes keeping a resolution much more achievable. 

Put Time Into Planning

Don't wait until the last minute to choose your goal. Picking wisely and putting in extensive planning are essential parts of achieving any goal. Experts suggest that you brainstorm how you will tackle a major behavior change, including the steps you will take, why you want to do it, and ways you can keep yourself on track.

Make a Detailed Plan

Creating a detailed written plan can help you stick to your goal. Why is this stage so critical for success? For one thing, it allows you to consider what tactics you will use when you're faced with challenges. When things get difficult, what strategies will you use to stay on the path toward making your resolution a reality?

If you start working toward a goal without any type of plan in place, you may quickly find yourself giving up when faced with any sort of obstacle, setback, or resistance. For example, if your goal is to run three times per week, what will you do if you've missed four days in a row, and how will you proceed if you need to take time off for an illness or injury?

You can start by writing down your goal, making a list of things you might do to achieve that goal, and noting any obstacles that might stand in your way. By knowing exactly what you want to accomplish and the difficulties you might face, you'll be better prepared to stick to your resolution and overcome anything that might sidetrack you.

Start With Small Steps

Taking on too much too quickly is a common reason why so many New Year's resolutions fail. Starting an unsustainably restrictive diet, overdoing it at the gym, or radically altering your normal behavior are surefire ways to derail your plans. Instead, focus on taking tiny steps that will ultimately help you reach your larger goal.

Small Steps Lead to Success

  • If you have resolved to run a marathon, start out by going for a jog two or three times a week. Slowly, work up to longer runs and exercising more days per week.
  • If you are trying to eat healthier, start by replacing a few less healthy foods with more nutritious options. Then, tackle another element of your diet, such as adding in a greater variety of vegetables, reducing portion size, and/or cutting back on fried food or eating out.

While it may seem like a slow start, these small incremental changes make it easier to stick to your new healthy habits and increase the likelihood of long-term success.  

Avoid Repeating Past Failures

Another strategy for keeping your New Year's resolution is to not make the exact same resolution year after year. "If people think they can do it, they probably can, but if they've already tried and failed, their self-belief will be low," Wiseman explained in an interview with The Guardian .

If you do choose to reach for the same goals you've tried for in the past, spend some time evaluating your previous results. Which strategies were the most effective? Which were the least effective? What has prevented you from keeping your resolution in past years?

Consider altering your resolution slightly to make it more feasible. By changing your approach, you will be more likely to see real results this year.

Remember That Change Is a Process

Those unhealthy or undesired habits that you are trying to change probably took years to develop, so how can you expect to change them in just a matter of days, weeks, or months? Be patient with yourself. Understand that working toward your resolution is a process. Even if you make a misstep or two, you can restart and continue on your journey towards your goal.

It may take longer than you would like to achieve your goals, but remember that this is not a race to the finish. Once you have made the commitment to changing a behavior, it may be something that you continue to work on for the rest of your life.

Get Support

Yes, you've probably heard this advice a million times, but that is because the buddy system actually works. Having a solid support system can help you stay motivated and accountable.   Camaraderie makes sticking to your resolution more fun, too. So, ideally, find a like-minded pal or loved one to join you in your goal.

Explain what your goals are to your close friends or family and ask them to help you achieve your objectives. Better yet, enlist the help of others by joining a group that shares your goal.

Renew Your Motivation

During the first days of a New Year's resolution, you will probably feel confident and highly motivated to reach your goal. Because you haven't really faced any discomfort or temptation associated with changing your behavior, making this change might seem all too easy.

After dealing with the reality of dragging yourself to the gym at 6 a.m. or gritting your teeth through headaches brought on by nicotine withdrawal , your motivation to keep your New Year's resolution may start to dwindle.

When you face such moments, remind yourself exactly why you are doing this. Think about (or write a list to keep handy) what do you have to gain by achieving your goal. Finding sources of inspiration can keep you going when times get tough.

Keep Working on Your Goals

By March, many people have lost that initial spark of motivation that they had in January. Keep that inspiration alive by continuing to work on your goals, even after facing setbacks. If your current approach is not working, reevaluate your strategies, and develop a new plan. Being flexible with your plan—and even your end goal—will help you be successful.

Keep a Resolution Journal

Consider keeping a resolution journal , where you can write about your successes and struggles. Write down the reasons why you are working toward your goal so that you can refer to them during times when you feel uninspired and unmotivated. Think about what is causing you to falter (such as stress from work or home life) and how to cope effectively .

By sticking with it and working on your goal all year long, you can be one of the few able to say that you really did keep your New Year's resolution—and if you're writing down your progress and strategies, you'll have ready proof of your efforts if you're ever feeling like giving up.

Learn and Adapt

Encountering a setback is one of the most common reasons why people give up on their New Year's resolutions. If you suddenly relapse into a bad habit , don't view it as a failure. The path toward your goal is not always a straight one, and there will often be challenges along the way.   Instead, view relapses as learning opportunities.

If you are keeping a resolution journal, write down important information about when the relapse occurred, what might have triggered it, and what you might do differently next time. By understanding the challenges you face, you will be better prepared to deal with them in the future.

Last year my cousin told me about the new year resolution. It fascinated me so much that I had decided in my mind that I would also make a resolution on the 1st of January 2022. So, here comes my new year resolution in front of you. Resolution is a promise that we make to ourselves to change, improve, or quit any bad habit or learn something new within a preset time frame.

My New Year 2022 resolution is about improving the English language. In my previous class, I got only 50% marks in English. This year I will try my best to take it to at least 75%. I am not saying 95% or 100% because that will make it unachievable. My cousin told me that one should always make practical resolutions.

To fulfil my resolution I searched for certain websites and YouTube channels that teach the English language for class 10th. I found Homework Help by RG to be the best suitable channel for me and I subscribed to it. I did so because here the teacher is teaching English in the Hindi language which I can understand easily. Moreover, she explains even the minute details of common errors that students make in English writing.

My second resolution is to make myself healthy. Last year my annual health checkup report showed that I was low in haemoglobin (HB). It made my parents angry with me. The doctor warned me that skipping fruits and vegetables from our daily diet can have disastrous consequences.

I have got a customised diet plan from the doctor in which he has advised me to eat 2 servings of fruits every day which I would try to follow. For the first one month, I would start with one serving. Gradually when I get into the habit of eating fruits, I would shift to two servings in a day.

I am hopeful of fulfilling my resolutions positively. I feel like everyone should resolve them. A new year is a perfect time to resolve. I wind up here and aspire to achieve my resolution in the year 2022.

On the other hand, you could slip, lose your footing and plummet into the foaming waters, an animated portrait of defeat.

At least that’s the way I picture my New Year’s resolutions from past years: noble beginnings, groaning disasters.

It’s all because I inevitably make the same resolution every year: Organize my photos.

And I am not alone in writing down this simple goal on the last day of December.

I’ve clipped out enough articles titled “What to Do With Family Photos” and “Finally Organize Those Photos” to know that there are others who tremble at the thought of tackling their photo hoards.

As one of those articles reminds me: “The idea of sorting through them feels daunting, so instead you do nothing. The shots pile up; the cycle continues.”

What if one’s hesitancy to embark on sorting through old family photos is part of a cycle? Aren’t family photos evidence of the cycles of our lives: birth, growth, age, death? Do we avoid sorting through the boxes of photos in order to avoid cycling through the stages of our lives?

Throughout the first dozen years of my life, my mother, a Brooklyn girl who came out west with the love of her life, my father, another New Yorker who went to France in 1917 as a U.S. Marine, held a Kodak Brownie box camera at waist level and took “snapshots” of her only child. A teacher, housewife and then a working mother, she didn’t let the printed photos pile up in a Thom McAn shoe box.

Instead, she dislodged small rolls of exposed film from the camera, left them at the corner drug store and returned five days later to pick up the glossy black-and-white images of her 11-year-old daughter, squinting in the unyielding California sun.

Those images, at least 200 of them, went into a black album embossed on the cover with “Photographs.” Inside, on soft black pages, my mother lovingly penned with white ink the location of the snapshot and a date. She was so enamored of the wonder of those images that she even kept a double exposure of a 5-year-old’s first elephant ride, noting: “I was so excited!”

Maybe the focus of preserving these small black-and-white images was tinged with the rapture of a new technology. The Brownie camera had been invented by Kodak only 30 years earlier, and its magic was tangible and attractive.

So if there’s a New Year’s resolution on my list, it’s to sort, toss and organize my photos while remembering that life is a cycle of moments when we reached for a camera saying, “I’m so excited!”

It’s time to clean out some bad 2021 habits

The year 2021 was one for personal growth, rapid change and ridding myself of acquaintances or connections that were no longer healthy for me. With boundaries placed on relationships and focusing on my career, 2021 was the year dedicated to my own growth. While I felt I’ve made changes where necessary for the above this past year, I’ve let myself go in other areas of my life by continuing to act on bad habits with food and money.

Even though I graduated from university in 2020 and walked in-person in 2021, it appears my college habits have remained this past year, specifically by overspending on takeout meals and overconsuming alcohol.

This uneasy habit of wanting to go out to eat almost five days a week because I don’t want to cook took a toll on both my weight and my wallet. Transitioning myself out of this habit is very difficult and only made me angry with myself for listening to my cravings instead of budgeting on meals. Do I really need to go to Poki One N Half, Raising Canes, AYCE Korean BBQ and Starbucks in the same week? No, I definitely don’t. In 2022, I’m hoping to forgo my desire to eat out daily by pushing myself to learn more cooking recipes instead of relying on delivery services or cravings as my reasoning to eat out.

Aside from meals, I’ve also let my drinking habits get out of hand. Whenever I go out with friends or co-workers, I always have this urge to buy a drink or two on any occasion: birthdays, holiday parties, simple moments of celebration, or just because it’s Friday. While no one has ever pressured me into drinking as an adult or encouraged excessive drinking, I tend to overdo it myself. It’s caused deterioration in my health and has caused me to gain 20 pounds. While it won’t be easy to cut out alcohol consumption all at once, I’m ready to cut out drinking from my life in 2022 as it has not benefited me in any way and has only impacted my mental health negatively.

I’m looking forward to holding myself accountable for two habits that are no longer healthy for my life. But of course there’s one question for choosing to focus on these habits for my New Year’s resolution: Why? I’m at a point in my life where I’ve realized these habits are detrimental to my mental and physical health, and I no longer wish to continue to dig myself deep into this hole. It’s definitely not a habit one should have at this age. Allowing my college past to overtake my mid-20s adulthood will not serve me well.

Just as we physically clean out our homes for spring cleaning, I’m ready to clean out these habits from my lifestyle, leaving them behind in 2021 to make way for 2022.

Why make a promise that will be broken?

Life changes as we age.

Sixty-five years ago I had self-discipline. I could concentrate, focus and stay on task. I finished everything I started.

I wasn’t very wise, and my writing skills were inadequate. I got a master’s degree and teaching credentials with only three units of English.

Now, at 85, I am a lot wiser. My writing skills have improved. Thanks to The San Diego Union-Tribune editorial staff, I have learned to be brief. Say what you want to say and get out of there.

Unfortunately I have lost my self-discipline and ability to concentrate. I zap from one thing to another and never finish anything. I just don’t have the toughness to knuckle down and do what ought to be done.

I should exercise more, stop smoking and consume less caffeine and alcohol. I should make New Year’s resolutions, but I know it would be useless.

The thought of having that last smoke terrifies me. I’ve lost my self-discipline.

A vow to be ready when pandemic lifts

I have always resolved not to resolve anything based on a date. Most of my resolutions have to do with either something that I should have done or had screwed up. But here it is, another new year and the realization that I didn’t resolve to do anything in 2021. I came through with flying colors.

My two-year COVID-19 anniversary is not long from now. My garage is still a mess, a few business nuisances still awaiting closure, that not-quite-started history paper I’ve been dawdling on (and on), and my dicey sock drawer that resembles an archaeological dig before the digging.

I’m a meeting planner with no meetings to plan. Until we can all convene again, my colleagues and I scrape by with dashes of optimism, the virus retreating, and dread, the virus winning. At my company alone, we have 65 coordinators idle, save the kindle of hope we had with work right after Thanksgiving with a smaller Comic-Con and a smaller Amazon Web Services meeting. Then the flame died out with Omicron.

I don’t like being helpless, and I’m sad to admit that feeling sometimes gets to me. I have to do something, so here’s what I resolve for 2022: I will do those things that I can control, so that I’m ready when the virus abates enough for groups to gather. I will not allow discouragement to affect me in a way that will leave me ill-prepared to be at my best when the meetings business returns.

Resolving to be more resolute this year

When I was a child my parents helped my brother and me to make New Year’s resolutions. They asked us what we wanted to do better in the coming year, but suggested what, in their opinion, we should do better. Of course, as youngsters we didn’t realize that we were being “prompted.” Then at school our teacher would ask the class what our resolutions were. They also tried to influence us, with a nudge toward studying harder, reading more, etc. I remember one teacher in particular, Mrs. Shaw, my fourth grade English teacher, who would occasionally help us to remember our New Year’s resolution by having us write it down using proper grammar.

By February, the resolution was forgotten.

History repeats itself.

Last Jan. 1, I resolved to eat more (I’m too thin), exercise more (hmm), and play one of my musical instruments daily if even for a few minutes. That one went flat! I’m not sure if the resolutions lasted until February, but “things” seemed to get in the way. I did buy an under-desk peddle machine, which is sitting in my home office, but ....

Here it is — another New Year’s Day and another chance to make resolutions. I’ll try to keep them this year. Like last year I’ll try to eat more (Rubio’s and Starbucks here I come!); exercise more (put that under-desk peddler under your desk now, Iris!); and play a musical instrument. I’ve already taken out my soprano recorder and dusted off my piano keys.

So now it’s New Year’s Day and I’ve already made a start for the New Year. So what is really my New Year’s resolution for 2022? To keep my New Year’s resolution!

Pledge to do more and less in 2022

May our 2022 be the year of more and less.

More walks. More books. More nature, more art. Less doom-scrolling social media.

More cooking. Less takeout.

More water, less coffee. (Maybe.)

More time with family. Less time worrying about the choices of people beyond my four walls.

More effort to take on fulfilling projects. Less inclination to take on tasks that drain me.

More fun! Remember fun? It’s harder to find during a pandemic, when social distancing is preferred, when plans must be canceled again and again. But fun is out there somewhere, and we can find it again if we acknowledge that this is just the way things are for a while.

More or less.

I wrote my New Year’s Resolutions down last year in my journal: exercise more, play tennis as much as possible, help more around the house, take Stella for more walks, enjoy nature more, read as much as possible, be a better coach, drink less alcohol and more water, write more and love more (be a kinder person). I exercised more or at least the same in ‘21 with the help of my workout buddies Mark and Paul. I also played a lot of tennis throughout the year. I need to keep working on helping more around the house, although I improved on that one from previous years, thanks to a long story I will not go into detail here. I failed to take Stella for as many walks as I had hoped. I always try to appreciate nature; only wish I could write like the UT’s “Outdoors” writer. I love to read, but it hurt to lose my bifocals, like I did about a month or so ago (I knew I had lost them when a fellow teacher said he had seen students playing with a lens outside his classroom), wah, wah. I lost my coaching job after one weird COVID year, though it was just a freshman football coaching job helping young quarterbacks (turned out to be a blessing in disguise trust me). I am working on drinking less; it is tough because I do not have the will power it takes to cut it out completely and living in the craft beer capitol of the world does not help. Water was an easy one to reach because I exercise and have partners reminding me to hydrate. I am writing more; it is one of those activities the more I write the more I want to write. And believe it or not, I am a kinder person, at least, depending on who you talk to about this subject.

In 2022 I am going to stick to the same resolutions: exercising, playing tennis, helping in various ways, enjoying nature, reading, drinking less of the bad liquid and more of the good one, writing more and continuing to improve on loving and caring. Taking the place of coaching will be working on my relationships, all of them. The relationship I have with my wife, remember, happy wife, happy life. The relationship I have with my son, daughter and my grandchildren. The one I have with my brother and two sisters, now in their 70’s and 80’s respectively. The relationships I grow each year with my students. The relationships I continue to cultivate with my teaching colleagues and tennis buddies. Relationships with all different types of people, the main ones with family, are the most important items human beings take the responsibility to nurture, because if a person has not done a decent job with these, in the end, what has he or she to show for? Nothing, they have wasted the most precious of all gifts, life. I would love to say I arrived at this most important of all resolutions on my own, but I had help. My son gave me the book Season of Life many years ago and the crux of the book is on how important relationships are in a person’s life. The plot has to do with a father and son, but dwells on multiple relationships before hitting the big one. I’ll let you know how successful I am with my resolutions in ‘22; in the meantime, Happy New Year, and good luck with yours!

As I look back at 2021, I am dismayed that a year that began with such hope and promise — a new President, vaccines that were going to put Covid in the rear view mirror, sweeping improvements in infrastructure, social programs, and general health and well being of the planet and its inhabitants. Well the glass got half full.

But I have no control over that. What I tried to do was finish projects that I began 8 years ago when I retired. I have finished two books, one dealing with spiritual growth during the pandemic - Spiritual Growth During Lockdown, and an historical personal memoir about rock and roll and the Vietnam War - The 60s and Beyond. They will be available on Amazon.

What I did not do is maintain my weight. I got the COVID 10. As in pounds. Stress makes cake and cookies and ice cream and chocolates look that much more appealing. But I have turned the corner and dropped seven.

So all in all, 2021 was not the cat’s pajamas, but it wasn’t a lump of coal either.

So, my new year resolution for this year is to have no resolution at all.

There is no sense in celebrating the first day of the new year with the resolution task. There are 365 days in one year, and you can choose any of the days to start your desired task or resolution. There is no compulsion on selecting the first day of the year to select the task or decide what goals to achieve in a single year. Yes! It’s a fantastic day to keep track of your progress if you start it from the first day of the year. Also, taking a big decision on the first day is a stupid thing to do. You should not make any decision that you cannot fulfill in the year itself. When you take such decisions that are impossible in the selected time frame, there is a high chance of you neglecting and leaving the task incomplete. People are shameless, and they call it “New Year Resolutions are to be broken.”

There are a few things you should take care before announcing the decisions on the first day of the year. Make sure you do not fall prey to the social pressure as there is no compulsion. Also, make sure you do no promise yourselves to achieve big goals that are virtually impossible to fulfill in short time duration. Keep it small and possible within the shorter time frame.”

I don’t really have a plan. But I will try my best to improve myself. I will try to study hard in English and other languages and I will dedicate myself to them. I will try to change myself not to be lazy. I will make my family, friends, and surroundings happy. I guess that’s my resolution for 2021!

What makes a perfect New Year Resolution? An idea that shapes and reflects you in a better way can be considered a New Year Resolution. As students, we should refine our thoughts, cultivate good habits and enhance our personality every year.

As it is widely believed that New year is a chance for many men to get rid of some old habits and bring positive and productive changes in their day to day lives. People from all walks of life set target and make resolutions in order to lead happy, content, peaceful and prosperous life.

Resolutions are often made to do away with bad and useless activities. All activities that let go time unproductive and yield into nothing are erased and replaced into new activities that never go in vain and bring productive changes. It’s very hard to avoid rampant activities that destroy our lives.

I am a student, to me time is the most precious thing. If I will kill time now, it will kill me tomorrow. My new year resolutions are enlisted below.

1) Earlier to bed and will rise early. 2) Get organized. 3) Learn something new. 4) Exercise regularly 5) Stop procrastinating 6) Try to be more assertive 7) Eat healthy foods 8) Enjoy every moment of life 9) Help others specially needy people 10) Reducing unproductive use of time.

In order to attain my above mentioned resolutions and goals I will bring many changes in my day to day. One of the biggest cause of procrastination is excessive use of social media specially Facebook, Whats App, Twitter etc. Apart from it I will limit the time I spend in front of the television.

Instead of watching television excessively I will try to find a sport that I like and play that game in order to keep myself fit and smart. A good student is known by his behavior and character. I will be respectful to my parents, teachers and elders because respecting and obeying elders is counted in good manners.

Good manners makes our personality. These changes will enhance my personality. My New Year resolutions will not only help me to eliminate my bad habits and adopt good habits but it will also make my future bright and make me successful at every junction of life.

Every student often set resolutions on New Year. Basically a New Year resolution is made when one wants to correct the mistakes they have done the past year or do something in a more organized manner.

Students specially set their objectives regarding their studies and to brighten their future. A good student always learns lessons from the mistakes committed in the present or past year and on the eve of New year pledges to oneself to rectify all mistakes once did in the face of ocean of other activities.

A student often procrastinate studies and uses time carelessly and indulges in the wanton activities which adversely affect their studies. It is very necessary for a student to set the target every year and try every waking moment to get the desired and set target.

Every student must dream to do something productive because dreaming and materializing dreams is akin to success. I am also a student and being a student I have also made resolutions before, but just like anybody else, I too break it up. But this time I am going to stick to my resolutions and make sure that I change myself.

I have noted down a few resolutions that I would like to take this year and stick onto them. The most important of all is to be organized. I never have the habit of organizing my work and therefore end up in incomplete homework and projects.

So this year I plan to be more systematic and organized, so that I finish my work on time and do not keep pending, the works assigned to me.Secondly I would like to be a good reader.

I have heard that reading is a good habit, but I hardly take the time to read, even if I have time. So this time I have decided that I would spend some time in reading books that would improve my knowledge and interest in reading. Another area that I would like to improve myself is with the excess time spent on the internet.

Hours together I sit in front of the system, though I know it is just wasting my time unnecessarily. I have decided to cut down the time I use for surfing and make it more productive, rather than just visiting social networking sites and chatting.

Along with the internet, the other electronic item that has addicted me is the cell phone. I spent hours talking over the phone, not realizing the harmful effects it causes and waste my time and money. I have decided to cut it down and make good use of time.

This time, I am determined to stick to my resolutions and get myself corrected to be a more better student , both for myself, and my family and to the society.

Setting new year resolutions will revive and renew you into a better student. I have remained student and have came across through your phase of life. Time is the greatest weapon in your hands, if you will make good use of your time it will transmute you into gold.

It’s the very time that matters more than anything else in life, realization of the importance of time won’t strike your minds now because you are surrounded and indulged in many activities that sounds beneficial to you, actually these wanton activities of yours will not avail you in future.

Time is a healer and teacher, now or then it will teach you a lesson which neither any teacher nor any book would had taught you so far. So my dear students do not murder your time mercilessly, stop running behind all unnecessary things and get rid of all useless activities and equip yourself with the productive use of time.

Persistence and regularity at work is key to success. If you desire to be successful, value your time and be complete your tasks within stipulated time.

It’s very necessary for a student to set new year resolution because new year resolution is nothing but a way to improve and enhance oneself. Without a solid and sound resolution you won’t be able to accomplish your goals, shun all negative moves of your past and start a new journey with firm faith and determination, whatever you desire and aspire to attain will fall into your lapse.

In the end I will suggest you that this year instead of setting yourself for disappointment with vague goals, try setting structured and traceable smart goals. Your goals must be realistic, attainable, specific and achievable.
