The program’s primary focus is on applied research in the aviation and aerospace industries, resulting in meaningful contributions to practice.

Qualifying Examinations

Students are required to take and pass written qualifying examinations to demonstrate their ability to pursue the doctoral degree. Qualifying examinations are designed to evaluate students’ mastery of the fundamentals of aviation business administration that support their research endeavors. Participation in the qualifying examination requires a GPA of 3.0 or above in the course work. It is recommended that students take the qualifying exam within two semesters after completing their course work. Passing the qualifying examination will require that the student achieves a satisfactory score on each section. A student must pass the qualifying examination in not more than two attempts. A student who fails to achieve acceptable scores in all trials will be dismissed from the program at the end of that semester.

The qualifying examinations are developed and administered by the Daytona Beach David B. O’Maley College of Business faculty with subject matter expertise drawn from appropriate sources. A doctoral student who passes the qualifying examination is eligible to register for dissertation research credit and is classified as a doctoral candidate. The doctoral candidates are required to work with the Doctoral Program Coordinator to select a qualified dissertation advisor(s) and form their committee before taking any dissertation research credit.

Dissertation Advisor and Committee

Upon entry into the Doctor of Aviation Business Administration Program, the Doctoral Program Coordinator advises students on course selection and developing a plan of study.  Upon completion of the qualifying examination and elevation to candidacy status, candidates must select a qualified dissertation advisor(s) from the faculty of the David B. O’Maley College of Business in Daytona Beach.

Any appropriately qualified tenured or tenure-track faculty of the David B. O’Maley College of Business with a relevant terminal (doctoral) degree and expertise in a research area closely related to the candidate’s area of interest may serve as the dissertation advisor(s) for a doctoral candidate. The Doctoral Program Coordinator provides administration of the Advisor Process and grants final approval for those selected to be doctoral dissertation advisors. A student must work with their dissertation advisor(s) to form a proposed calendar of program events, milestones, and a dissertation committee, all of which receive final approval from the Doctoral Program Coordinator. The dissertation committee is composed of three appropriately qualified faculty members from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

If a student is involved in collaborative research with an outside institution or company, one qualified member from these entities may serve on the dissertation committee, in addition to the faculty members from the university. The student’s dissertation advisor(s) typically serves as the chair of the dissertation committee.

The doctoral candidates are expected to meet with their dissertation advisor(s) and committees once a semester at a time convenient to all parties.

Proposal Examinations

The purpose of the proposal examinations is to evaluate students’ readiness for conducting their proposed research. The proposal examinations assess the students’ ability to use their knowledge to perform high-quality, independent and creative research and assure their potentials for successful completion of their dissertation. The examining committee is composed of the student’s dissertation committee and the Doctoral Program Coordinator or a representative from the Dean of the David B. O’Maley College of Business at Daytona Beach. Doctoral candidates must take the proposal examination within one year after starting their dissertation.

The proposal examination consists of a written research proposal and an oral presentation made to the examining committee.  At least two weeks before the preliminary examination, the student must provide written copies of the research proposal to each of the members of the examining committee. The purpose of this proposal is for the student, with the guidance of the dissertation advisor(s), to define the focus of the research and to enable the examining committee to offer maximum assistance and advice to the student. The proposal should contain a clear statement of the proposed topic of aviation business research; a review of the literature relating to the problem; and an outline of the proposed methodology for a solution to the problem. The proposal also should include an estimated cost of needed resources; and a schedule that identifies key milestones and events for measuring the progress of the intended effort. The proposal examination evaluates the student’s readiness for completing the dissertation research. Students who fail to meet the expectation of the committee will be informed of the areas of weakness and given one additional opportunity to amend and correct their proposal. Candidates who fail to show improvements in the research proposal in their second trial will be dismissed from the program at the end of that semester.

Dissertation Defense

The purpose of the defense examination is to evaluate the student’s overall research effort and written dissertation to determine whether or not the candidate is qualified to receive a doctoral degree in Aviation Business Administration. At least one month before the defense, the student must provide written copies of the final draft of the dissertation to each member of the examining committee. The dissertation defense is the candidate’s oral presentation of the final work of the dissertation. There may be an additional representative from the Daytona Beach Campus Chief Academic Officer’s (CAO) office or an external subject matter expert present in the defense. During the defense presentation, the results presented in the dissertation may be formally challenged by the examining committee. The defense is administered by the student’s examining committee in accordance with the guidelines of the Daytona Beach David B. O’Maley College of Business and the University. The major areas of emphasis of this examination are the quality and originality of the candidate’s research and his/her knowledge and understanding of the general areas of study related to the field. The candidate’s dissertation advisor(s) or the Doctoral Program Coordinator may invite other members from inside or outside ERAU to attend the defense. It is expected that the students, at the minimum, cite one peer-reviewed journal and one conference presentation as the lead author in their defense disseminated from their research work.

Students who fail to pass their defense can be asked to re-work part of their dissertation and to re-defend the results or may be dismissed from the program. The candidate’s dissertation advisor(s) will coordinate any needed remediation resulting from a failed defense.

Annual Progress Review

The students should maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all classwork and adhere to all the university’s academic policies. After passing the qualification exam, the candidates must provide an annual progress report to the Doctoral Program Coordinator. The progress report summarizes the main accomplishments and progress in the previous year and identifies the work plan for the future. The progress should be signed by the candidate and his/her dissertation advisor(s). The progress report should be submitted before the end of the second week in December each year. The Doctoral Program Coordinator will review the progress of the doctoral candidate once a year. The purpose of the review is to ensure that candidates continue to make satisfactory progress toward their degree objectives. All major recommendations from this annual review will be forwarded to the candidate with an assessment of achievements and of areas where improvements are expected.

Dismissal Policy

Based on the recommendation from the Doctoral Program Committee, a student will be dismissed from the program if the overall GPA is less than 3.0 for two successive semesters. Also, a student will be dismissed from the program if they twice fail the qualifying exam, fail the preliminary examinations, fails to pass the final dissertation defense (after remediation attempts), or if the seven-year program time limit is exceeded.

The application for the Doctor in Aviation Business Administration program is competitive. Students are admitted only during the fall term each year, with their first residency occurring in August. Domestic and international students with a prior Master’s degree are eligible for acceptance. For full consideration, please apply by May 1 .  Only completed applications are reviewed, so please make sure to study the requirements thoroughly.

What our students say…

The staff members that I encountered were warm, welcoming and supportive of my studies. The relatively small size of the University’s postgraduate school created a close family/communal environment for both staff and students. This provided a good support system as I could quickly grow acquainted with the postgraduate team and other Doctoral research candidates.

Aeroplane at terminal during dusk

Category: Aviation management

Researcher: Peter Ayerakwa

Supervisor: Professor Gabriel Lodewijks

Level: PhD

Status: Current

The fundamental units for the measurement of the level of service (LOS) at airport terminals are per passenger space and waiting time. The IATA framework measures passenger density and waiting time separately, which could lead to conflicting measurements when passenger density and waiting time indicates different LOS levels.

This thesis is therefore aimed to develop a combined spatial and temporal LOS (ST-LOS) framework to guide terminal planning.

The first stage

In the first stage of this thesis, a passenger survey was conducted, which involved the Repertory Grid Technique (RGT), a questionnaire, an experiment and a semi-structured interview. Results showed that two-thirds of the participants perceived a decreased service quality associated with crowdedness at airports, and 85 per cent of the RGT constructs indicated dissatisfaction regarding space.

47 per cent of the senior Australian participants previously complained about inter-person-spacing (IPS) at airports, while none of the senior Korean participants did so. The young Australian participants were tolerant of smaller personal space, 15cm smaller IPS on average, compared to the senior Australian participants.

These findings revealed a moderating role of age and cultural background in the personal space demand of passengers and suggested the necessity of an alternative LOS standard that incorporates the concept of perceived personal space as a spatial LOS attribute.

The second stage

In the second stage, computer simulation was used to test the proposed ST-LOS framework under different terminal and passenger settings. The ST-LOS was built by combining the temporal and spatial measurements and aimed to allow at least 50 per cent of passengers to experience the optimum LOS.

In the base simulation, 65 per cent of passengers experienced the optimum LOS according to the ST-LOS. However, only 22 per cent of passengers experienced the optimum LOS defined by the current IATA standard. To meet the IATA standard, the check-in queue width had to be reduced from 1.5m to 1.2m that differed from the recommended queue width (1.4m-1.6m) by IATA.

A case study based on Sydney International Airport illustrated the application of the ST-LOS framework for LOS measurement. The case study revealed that our ST-LOS framework better represents the LOS that passengers will experience, and that incorporating personal space demand of passengers will improve the LOS standard.

An increased use of automation within the air traffic management environment is seen to be one possible enabler for a significant capacity increase of the air traffic management system.

However, often automated tools and systems are rejected by the air traffic controller's unwillingness to cooperate with it. This research defines the threshold along the automation dimensions ‘decision selection’ and ‘action implementation’, where the support of the operators tips into skepticism and refusal to collaborate with it.

Researcher: Marek Bekier

Supervisor: Dr Brett Molesworth

This research seeks to investigate the relationship of airline service quality with price, service value, airline image, passenger satisfaction and passengers' behavioural intentions.

By acquiring data from both Korean and Australian passengers, the purpose of this research is to study and to understand choice behaviour of airline passengers. To test the conceptual framework, path analysis technique via structural equation modeling is applied to data collected from airline passengers.

Researcher: Jin Wu Park

Since 1990, aviation mishaps have cost the Australian Defence Force (ADF) the loss of over 44 highly trained personnel and 23 aircraft, and a financial loss of several hundred million dollars. In contrast, Australian Regular Passenger Transport (RPT) operations have incurred no fatalities or aircraft losses.

Whilst at first glance one may suspect the hazards of combat have influenced the significant losses within ADF aviation, Boyd's research shows that none of the losses have occurred whilst operating in military campaigns. Equally significant is the finding that only one ADF aviation mishap occurred outside Australian territories.

Boyd's research provides a new analysis of data collected from approximately 1,000 ADF aviation professionals by an ADF survey based on the Flight Management Attitude Questionnaire developed by the University of Texas Crew Research Project.

A key innovation of Boyd's research is that, unlike previous research that merely compares culture and aviation safety between countries, his thesis examines the differences within the ADF organisation via a methodology based on military-specific categories of personnel groups or sub-cultures.

Boyd's research highlights the significant impact of military rank upon attitudes towards flight management: a finding with safety benefits through human performance in both military and commercial aviation in Australia.

Airline scheduling is a complex process. The conventional way of scheduling is to use outputs from one stage as inputs of a following stage from fleet assignment, aircraft routing, crew pairing, then crew rostering.

A major challenge in this conventional scheduling practice is the measurement of the operational performance of a schedule plan. Without detailed costing and simulation, current practices in the industry are commonly to benchmark the performance (eg. on-time performance) against an arbitrarily chosen target. Thus, this project is to improve upon this industry practice and improve how airlines benchmark schedules and actual performance.

Airport retail is the single largest source (32.9 per cent) of airports’ non-aeronautical revenue. Its average compound annual growth rate (CAGR) rate of 7.2 per cent over the last five years has continuously reminded people about its sheer importance to airports’ financial sustainability and stability.

It’s even more significant given that an airport’s aeronautical revenue stream is under surging pressure due to airlines’ intense competition to reduce operating costs such as landing fees. Despite the importance of airport retailing to the sustainability of the airport industry, there is a lack of focused academic research on how airport terminals could be optimised to maximise retail revenue.

This study will explore how future airport terminals can be better designed to maximise airport retail opportunities using an agent-based simulation approach. The result of this project will lead to a much-needed discussion on the efficiency of the existing airport terminal design practise. It will also bring a better understanding of the airport terminal design, thus, contributing to the future improvement of airport terminal design guidelines from an airport retail perspective.

To provide a reduction in aviation emissions whilst still allowing for growth, it is likely that a variety of economic, operational and technological mitigation will be required.

This research will utilise aircraft lifecycle cost models and the Driving, Pressures, State, Impact, Responses (DPSIR) framework to provide an analysis of commercial aircraft configurations. Correlations between airframe, engine and emissions will be identified and compared with operational costs, providing aircraft manufacturers, airlines and aircraft financiers with an enhanced understanding of the operational and climate implications of their aircraft configuration decisions.

Airports as modes of air transport are influenced by other modes of transport and this research intends to identify these correlations by responding to issues such as:

  • what other modes of transport in the vicinity of an airport affect the demand of an airport
  • how other airports in the network influence the demand for an airport in that network
  • how a network model (hub and spoke, point to point or hybrid) affects the overall performance of the network
  • how people respond to different network models.

This research examines the feasibility of LTAA for freight operations within Australia. LTAA as a new mode of freight transportation is viewed as having significant potential to assist the freight industry in meeting the growing freight task in Australia, which is predicted to double by around 2030.

LTAA has the potential to increase the efficiency of the freight network, with its increased speed and carrying capacity, and its ability to provide innovative solutions to existing freight tasks. This research aims to assess how LTAA would be viewed by the industry and if it will be a viable form of freight transportation in general and for specific freight types, eg. Out of Gauge.

The ♦ course is considered critical. In alignment with the Degree Map Guidance for Indiana’s Public Colleges and Universities, published by the Commission for Higher Education (pursuant to HEA 1348-2013), a Critical Course is identified as “one that a student must be able to pass to persist and succeed in a particular major.  Students who want to be nurses, for example, should know that they are expected to be proficient in courses like biology in order to be successful.  These would be identified by the institutions for each degree program”.
The student is ultimately responsible for knowing and completing all degree requirements. Consultation with an advisor may result in an altered plan customized for an individual student. The myPurduePlan powered by DegreeWorks is the knowledge source for specific requirements and completion.

Group project

In April students are divided into groups of seven to ten, and asked to solve a current airport planning and management challenge. The group project draws upon the learning from the taught modules and applies it to real-life simulation. Each member is required to take responsibility for a key area, for example, market analysis, capital expenditure forecast or terminal design. The group submits a report of their findings and recommendations and delivers a presentation to staff, students and industry experts.

Projects are usually supported by industry and potential future employers value this experience. Industry involvement is an integral component to the group project, to give you first-hand experience of working within real life challenging situations.

Previous Group Projects have included:

  • Evaluating the business case for extending the runway at Birmingham Airport
  • The preparation of development plans for two new airports in South-West England

Heavy Rain and Floods Kill 19 in Oman and Disrupt Dubai Airport

A year’s worth of rain fell in one day in some areas across Oman and the United Arab Emirates, bringing cities to a standstill.

Follow our coverage of the flooding in Oman and Dubai.

Record levels of rainfall have brought cities in the United Arab Emirates and Oman to a standstill, with at least 19 people killed in Oman and flights being diverted from Dubai’s airport.

In the U.A.E., authorities urged all residents to stay at home, as videos showed cars submerged on gridlocked highways and planes leaving waves in their wake as they taxied down flooded runways in Dubai. In Muscat, Oman’s capital, flash flooding turned streets into raging rivers.

Experts said the extreme deluge was likely the result of a regular, rainy weather system being supercharged by climate change.

The storm first hit Oman on Sunday, causing widespread flash flooding and leading officials to close schools and government offices. On Wednesday, the heavy rains had eased, although the authorities warned residents to remain cautious.

Several areas of Oman received over 230 millimeters, or about 9 inches, of rain between Sunday and Wednesday, according to the country’s National Committee for Emergency Management. The average annual rainfall in Muscat, the nation’s capital, is about 100 millimeters, although other parts of the country can receive more rain.

By Wednesday morning, 19 deaths had been confirmed by the emergency management committee, including an infant. Ten of the dead were schoolchildren who were swept away in a vehicle with an adult, according to The Associated Press. Some schools remained closed in Oman on Wednesday, and some government employees were told to work from home.

Cars sit backed up behind a large flooded section of highway.

The U.A.E. had its largest rainfall event in 75 years on Tuesday, the government said on social media. One area received 255 millimeters, about 10 inches, of rain in less than a day, the country’s National Center of Meteorology said.

On Wednesday, officials at Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest, urged travelers not to go to the airport, with flights continuing to be delayed and diverted. Operations were briefly suspended because of the storm. Emirates, the national airline, said it was suspending check-in services for passengers departing from the airport until midnight.

“Recovery will take some time,” the airport said on social media . “We thank you for your patience and understanding while we work through these challenges.”

At Muscat International Airport, some flights were delayed and canceled, while others were operating on time, said Yousef al-Habsi, an information adviser for the airport.

Although some have speculated that recent cloud seeding efforts by the U.A.E. — using chemicals to increase the chances of clouds producing rain — could have contributed to the extreme weather, scientists said this was very unlikely.

“Rainfall enhancement could not cause that kind of increase in rainfall,” said Steven Siems, an expert in cloud seeding at Monash University in Australia, adding that any effects from cloud seeding would have been “marginal” at most.

The extreme weather appeared to be the result of a relatively normal weather system bringing rain that had been turbocharged by ocean and atmospheric warming, said Janette Lindesay, a climate scientist at the Australian National University. “It’s highly likely that global heating has played a role in the intensity of the event,” she said.

A low pressure system moving over the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf of Oman had interacted with parts of the jet stream, a river of wind that moves from west to east over temperate latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere, producing rainfall, Professor Lindesay said.

That in itself was not unusual. But with rising air and sea temperatures escalating ocean evaporation, there was more moisture in the atmosphere, she said, which had likely contributed to a bigger and more intense deluge of rain.

“In many parts of the world we’re seeing fewer rainfall events that produce moderate to light rainfall,” she said. “More dry days, but on the days with higher rainfall, it rains more heavily.”

Jenny Gross contributed reporting.

Dubai airport chaos: Emirates boss writes open letter after hundreds of thousands passengers stranded

A fter days of chaos at Dubai International Airport, which has seen hundreds of thousands passengers stranded, the boss of Emirates Airline has offered “most sincere apologies to every customer who has had their travel plans disrupted”.

Unprecedented flooding has caused havoc at the world’s busiest international aviation hub since Tuesday. The biggest airline is Emirates, which has cancelled the flights of 200,000 passengers and delayed many more.

The airline’s president, Sir Tim Clark, has written an open letter to passengers, saying: “We know our response has been far from perfect.

“We acknowledge and understand the frustration of our customers due to the congestion, lack of information, and confusion in the terminals.

“We acknowledge that the long queues and wait times have been unacceptable.”

In a bid to limit the crowding at Dubai airport and clear some of the stranded passengers, Emirates temporarily suspended check in at its hub and for passengers booked to fly in from points around the world.

Many travellers are still stuck thousands of miles from home. A dozen Saturday morning arrivals from key locations were cancelled, with passengers heading for the UK left with few rights .

Cancelled flights inbound to Dubai included:

  • Australasia: Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
  • Africa: Cape Town (two), Johannesburg, Dakar and Nairobi.
  • Indian sub-continent: Hyderabad, Mauritius and Mumbai.

From this afternoon, Saturday 20 April, Emirates appears to be flying a full schedule, with some flights delayed.

Sir Tim, who is the most influential figure in global aviation, writes; “Passengers previously stranded in the airport transit area have been rebooked and are en route to their destinations.

“We have put together a taskforce to sort, reconcile, and deliver some 30,000 pieces of left-behind baggage to their owners.

“It will take us some more days to clear the backlog of rebooked passengers and bags, and we ask for our customers’ patience and understanding.”

The Independent has been hearing from disgruntled passengers about delays and confusion. John Baker, who travelled from Bangkok to Birmingham via Dubai, described chaotic scenes at the hub with inaccurate and delayed information.

“I know the weather is beyond anyone’s control, but timely information reduces irritation even if it is bad news.

“There was no information. A company like Emirates must plan for response in such situations.”

Mr Baker eventually arrived in Birmingham around eight hours late, but his baggage is apparently still in Dubai.

Other airlines have been affected: British Airways has not flown its full schedule to and from Dubai since Tuesday, with the airport imposing capacity restrictions. BA appears to be running normally from Sunday.

The Independent is the world’s most free-thinking news brand, providing global news, commentary and analysis for the independently-minded. We have grown a huge, global readership of independently minded individuals, who value our trusted voice and commitment to positive change.
