Additional notes
(a) Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology/Biotechnology/ Chemistry/ Physics/ Mathematics/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Sciences/ Agriculture as applicable to individual discipline, under the 10+2+3/4 system, are eligible to apply to this program.
(b) The minimum requirement for admission to the Integrated Ph D programme is a FIRST CLASS or equivalent Grade in the Bachelor’s degree (as declared by the University) as indicated against each department.
(c) The minimum requirement of FIRST CLASS in the qualifying examination is relaxed to PASS CLASS for SC/ST candidates.
(d) Some departments have specific requirements of subjects at the Bachelor’s or 10+2 levels. Candidates have to ensure that they meet these requirements.
(e) Those in the final year of their qualifying examination and awaiting results are also eligible to apply. However, they should have completed all the requirements for the award of the qualifying degree, including all examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc., by the time of joining.
(f) While the regular PhD program allows an exemption from GATE scores for students with a 4-year degree from a CFTI and with a >= 8.0 CGPA out of 10.0, this is not applicable to Integrated PhD programme.
The short-listing of candidates for in-person(offline) interview is done based on the performance in JAM 2024. Short listing for Physical Sciences is also done based on JEST 2024. The selection of candidates for admission to research programmes is through an interview to be held at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. To see Important Dates
Selection – For Biological, Physical and Mathematical Sciences selection will be based on the combined performance in the Test and in Interview. For Chemical Sciences, selection will be based only on the performance in the Interview.
Candidates written the following papers in JAM are eligible for the discipline(s) to which they seek admission.
(a) The interview letters for the short-listed candidates will be sent by email and the same is available on the Applicant’s interface after login to the Admission Portal. Such candidates shall make necessary arrangements for attending the interview. No separate communication will be sent by post. TA (second class sleeper class train fare) will be paid to all the SC/ST candidates who attend the in-person interview.
(b) Candidates called for an interview have to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation etc.
(c) Candidates called for an interview should bring with them attested copies of all the transcripts (marks cards from SSLC or equivalent onwards, degree certificates of the qualifying examination, etc.) and produce them before the interview committee, failing which, they will not be interviewed.
(d) Candidates belonging to the SC/ST category should bring the original caste/tribe certificates, issued by competent authorities for purposes of verification.
(e) If you belong to Economically Weaker Section (EWS) – you must produce the original Income and Asset Certificate issued on or after 01 April 2024 by the competent authority at the time of interview.
(f) If you belong to OBC-NCL catregory – you must produce the valid OBC-NCL issued on or after 01 April 2024 by the competent authority at the time of interview.
(g) Candidate belonging to PwD (person-with-disability), KM (Kashmiri-Migrant) categories should produce the originals of the appropriate certificates, issued as per Government of India rules, and Kashmiri Pandit/Kashmiri Hindu Family living in Kashmiri valley should produce Kashmiri valley domicle certificate.
(h) The offer letter for the selected candidates will be posted on Applicant’s interface on IISc Admission portal under Application Status. You can download the offer letter and make necessary arrangements including payment of fees etc. No separate communication will be sent by post.
(i) The candidates admitted to the Integrated Ph D programmes should report to the Institute for completing admission formalities.
(j) At the time of joining, candidates should have completed all the requirements for the award of the qualifying degree including all examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc.
(k) Only candidates who produce all the mark sheets and degree certificates (original or provisional) issued by the University Authority will be given regular admission.
(l) Candidates who are awaiting results but have completed all formalities for the award of a degree should produce at the time of joining, a Course-Completion Certificate, issued by the Head of the institution (The Principal/Registrar). Such candidates will be given only provisional admission, which will be regularized on their producing all the marks sheets and degree certificates (original, or provisional) etc., issued by the University Authority on or before 31 October 2024, failing which, the provisional admission stands cancelled.
(m) Candidates who are given provisional admission are eligible for a scholarship only on regularisation of admission (on production of the required documents). They will be paid a scholarship with retrospective effect, i.e., from the date of joining.
NOTE: The results for some of the recent National Entrance Tests, such as GATE/ JAM etc, may not be available at the time of submitting the IISc admissions application. You must enter the available details of these exams, such as your enrolment/ roll number, paper, etc., in the application, but you may leave the score/rank/results blank. You will have the option to update your national entrance results in the application from the main “Application Status” page. You must make this update within 3 days of the results being declared.

The department offers B.Tech, M.Tech. and PhD programs (full time and part time). The emergence of the department is the consequence of the heavy demand from the industry on artificial intelligence and data analytics, and the need to tackle the many fundamental and foundational research problems arising in a rapidly evolving field. Eligibility Criteria for Application to the PhD program:
The Eligibility criteria for regular PhD program is MTech/Equivalent Degree in CS/ECE/EE or related areas in Artificial Intelligence. The applicant must have already earned the Master's degree, or should at least be in the final year of the respective pro-gram. In the latter case, it would be assumed that the candidate will be able to complete the degree by the time of admission into the PhD program. Candidates with MSc/MCA/equivalent PG degree with an EMDS at IIT-H may apply for Regular PhD program.
The Department of AI considers Direct-PhD admission , where the eligibility criteria is BTech/BE/MCA/MSc/Equivalent Degree in any engineering discipline or Maths, and have a valid GATE score in CS/EC/EE/MA/ST. Candidate with BTech/BE/MCA/MSc/Equivalent Degree in any engineering discipline or Maths from any Centrally Funded Technological Institutes (CFTI), with CGPA 9 or above can apply without a valid GATE score (For candidates from IITs/NITs/IIITs this is relaxed to CGPA 8 or above).
The Department of AI also considers Direct-Phd admission , where the eligibility criteria is BTech/BE/MCA/MSc/Equivalent Degree in any engineering discipline or Maths, and have a valid GATE score in CS/EC/EE/MA/ST. Candidate with B.Tech/M.Sc in any engineering discipline or Maths from any Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), with CGPA 8 or above can apply without a valid GATE score
Department also admit students to the part time PhD program . Part time PhD program have the same eligibility criteria listed above and in addition the candidate must be employed with a relevant employer at the time of application and admission.
For admission to the program, there will be a preliminary shortlisting depending upon the academic background. Candidates who satisfy the shortlisting criteria need to appear for a written test and/or an interview. The shortlisting criteria could be higher than the eligibility criteria. In addition, the department also reserves the right to set any cut off criteria for shortlisting the candidates and not to select anybody if no appropriate candidates are found.

The goal of the Ph.D. program at IIIT-Delhi is to empower students to become part of the global research ecosystem, and contribute to research organizations and top class universities across the world. The program is based on the best practices models at top universities across the world. IIIT-Delhi offers Ph.D. programs in Computational Biology (CB), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE), Human-Centered Design (HCD), Mathematics (Maths), and Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH).
"Candidates qualified for UGC/CSIR JRF, DST INSPIRE, DBT Fellowship and fresh B.Tech. graduates with research aptitude are strongly encouraged to apply. GATE score is not mandatory for some departments."
The PhD graduates of IIIT-Delhi hold faculty positions at multiple top-tier universities in India and abroad, such as BITS-Pilani, IISc, IIT-Gandhinagar, IIIT-Allahabad etc. . The concerned Department may use higher cut off levels for shortlisting besides giving due consideration to the way questions are answered in the application form. Candidates belonging to SC/ST/Differently abled categories would be eligible for relaxations, as per norms, in the selection criteria. (Details mentioned in the FAQ point no. 2)
Admission Categories
Regular Ph.D. - Candidates who are not holding regular work/employment and are primarily engaged in their academic program only. Those who are already employed will have to resign and submit the relieving before joining the Programme.
Sponsored Ph.D. - IIIT-Delhi allows highly motivated working professionals to pursue a Ph.D. degree while still employed at the sponsoring organization. Click here for more details.
Financial Support
Students joining the Ph.D. program as regular students will be considered for Institute Fellowship. Presently institute is offering fellowship at the rate of Rs. 37,000/- + HRA as per the DST rates per month until successfully completing the comprehensive exam and Rs. 42000 + HRA as per the DST rates per month since completing comprehensive exam until completion of the fifth year.
Additional Financial Support
- Support upto Rs 50k is provided towards purchase of laptop/ desktop.
- Contingency grant of 20000 per year.
Institute Travel Grant
Full time Ph.D. students are encouraged to present their research work at International Conferences. Financial support of up to Rs. 2.5L for the entire duration of the program is available.
Overseas Research Fellowship (ORF)
Support upto US $12000 may be considered in deserving cases to conduct research collaborations with reputed Universities/Labs abroad for a period of 3 to 6 months.
Admission Procedure
Rolling Admissions - It is meant for candidates who have a clear idea of the area they want to work. The interested candidates are expected to interact with the concerned faculty member(s) in IIIT-Delhi and get their consent for working with him/her. However, such candidates will undergo a full selection process before being admitted to the Ph.D. program. Click here for more details.
Regular Admissions - The regular admission happens in two cylces; once during February - April every year (for Monsoon Session) & other during September-November every year (for Winter Session).
Applications are invited from eligible candidates through an open advertisement. Admission is generally offered on the basis of an interview and/or written test, if necessary. The Institute will invite a limited number of candidates for a written test and interview based on the academic records, statement of purpose, etc. The final selection will be mainly based on academic credentials, written test and/or interview. The candidates who do not qualify in the written test need not appear for interview. The reserved category candidates will be given due relaxation in cutoff marks as per the norms.
The outstation candidates (non-NCR) who are shortlisted to appear for the written test/ interview, will be reimbursed their travel fare by second sleeper or public bus fare by the shortest route, whichever is cheapest. They will have to furnish the proof of travel. If a candidate decides to choose a different mode (e.g. 3AC, air, etc.), they will be only reimbursed the second sleeper or public transport bus fare by the shortest route.
Application Procedure
- Candidates can apply only through the online application portal. There is no provision for offline submission of application forms.
- If you are applying for more than one discipline, please submit a separate application for each discipline.
- After successful submission of the application form, you will receive an application number and a link to download the application form. Please save the application form. You need to furnish hardcopy of the application form and self-attested copies of all the relevant documents at the time of interview.
- Incomplete applications will be rejected.
- The application fee for Ph.D. program is as follow: Rs.150/- : For SC/ST/DA candidates Rs.300/- : For other candidates
