Where can I study psychology abroad?

As the study of the human mind, the field of psychology must give special consideration to culture and how different societies affect behavior. Students concentrating in this discipline should consider a study abroad experience that complements their psych major, in order to enhance their understanding of the field as a whole and round out their undergraduate curriculum.

Studying psychology abroad can really set you apart from the pack. Not only will you meet fellow students who nerdy laugh about your psychology jokes (“What did the hippocampus say when it retired? "Thanks for the memories." ZING), students will get a chance to evaluate topics from international and culture-specific perspectives, and understand how others engage with the material.

You may also be able to find specialty courses abroad that are unavailable to you at your home university, or even combine a psychology internship with your international studies to receive hands on professional experience on top of academic credit.

Lastly, many psychology study abroad programs have optional language training included, which can be extremely beneficial for psych students as they try to communicate with locals and gain a deeper level of cultural immersion.

Choosing a psychology study abroad program

Historically, Europe has been a leader in the development of psychology, therefore, many top psychology degree programs and universities are located in this region. However, there are also several opportunities to study psychology abroad, whether in the summer , for a semester , or for an entire year , in places like Australia , South America , and Asia too.

Just as having a psychology degree prepares you for versatile career paths, so too do your options for study abroad vary. Lucky for you, many study abroad programs, regardless of their location, offer lower level psychology classes as a course option, on top of specialty programs.

But, to make your trip really work, you should choose to study psychology in a location that is integral to your preferred niche within the field. Doing so might expose you to key thinkers, give you access to unique academic collections, or challenge you to warp your worldview from the inside out.

To help you decide where to expand your psychology education abroad, we've outlined nine of the best locations to study psychology abroad in the world below.

Online Ph.D. and PsyD in International Psychology Degree Programs

What will i learn in an online international psychology doctorate program, what to look for in an online international psychology doctorate program, admission requirements for a doctorate in international psychology, list of international psychology doctorate degree programs.

Online International Psychology Ph.D. and PsyD Degrees

International psychology is an emerging field. Division 52 of the American Psychological Association (APA) describes it as seeking "to develop a psychological science and practice that is contextually informed, culturally inclusive, serves the public interest, and promotes global perspectives within and outside of APA." The American Psychological Association is the primary accreditor of programs in psychology in the U.S., including the best doctorate degree programs in international psychology.

The best online doctorate programs in international psychology for students who are interested in earning a Ph.D. or a Psy.D. in International Psychology are limited, but this is likely to change in the future. Students who earn a doctorate degree in international psychology from a top program gain specialized expertise that allows them to work in a variety of settings in the U.S. and abroad.

Students who enroll in an online international psychology doctorate program are likely to have completed an international psychology master's degree program, such as the Master of Arts in International Disaster Psychology: Trauma and Global Mental Health program at the University of Denver , and a general psychology undergraduate program, such as the Online Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degree at San Francisco State University College of Professional and Global Education.

Doctorate degree students who enroll in a top international psychology program can earn their degree in a traditional setting or in an online format. The setting may depend upon the concentration or the specialization that the student chooses as their primary interest or goal.

The Chicago School of Professional Psychology offers an Online Ph.D. in International Psychology . Students choose either the Organizations and Systems concentration or the Trauma Services concentration.

The program prepares students to gain an understanding of the "interconnectivity of global systems." The students prepare to assume leadership roles in multinational organizations in a variety of settings. Some examples of where program graduates may work include:

  • Government agencies
  • International businesses
  • Non-profit agencies
  • American Red Cross
  • World Health Organization

Students complete coursework and complete two field experiences. The Organizations and Systems concentration requires three to four years of study. Students learn to design, to evaluate and to lead international programs. They engage in real-world training opportunities.

The Trauma Services concentration also requires three to four years of full-time study. Students learn to lead organizations and agencies in developing disaster preparedness and prevention training. They establish programs to help address mental health issues related to traumatic experiences.

Some sample courses include:

  • Mental Health Interventions
  • Self-Care Strategies in Humanitarian Efforts
  • Assessment of Psychosocial and Mental Health Reactions to Traumatic Stress
  • Field Experiences at an International Destination Chosen by Program

When searching for an online Ph.D. or PsyD program in International Psychology, there are several crucial factors to consider. Accreditation is paramount, ensuring that the program meets rigorous academic standards and is recognized by reputable accrediting bodies. Look for programs accredited by recognized organizations in the field of psychology, such as the American Psychological Association (APA) or other relevant regional accrediting bodies.

The curriculum of the program should be comprehensive and cover a broad range of topics relevant to international psychology. This should include in-depth study of theories, research methodologies, cultural diversity, cross-cultural counseling, intercultural communication, and global mental health. A well-rounded curriculum will equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to work effectively in diverse cultural contexts.

Evaluate the qualifications and expertise of the faculty members in the program. They should possess strong academic backgrounds in psychology, particularly in the field of international psychology, and ideally have practical experience working in diverse cultural settings. Faculty members who have published research or have expertise in specific areas of international psychology can greatly enhance the learning experience and provide valuable guidance for doctoral research.

Access to resources is crucial for an online doctoral program. Ensure that the program provides students with access to online databases, scholarly journals, and other relevant resources in the field of international psychology. Additionally, look for programs that offer interactive online platforms that facilitate collaboration and discussion among students. This can create a dynamic learning environment and foster meaningful interactions with peers and faculty members.

Practical experiences are invaluable in an international psychology program. Look for programs that provide opportunities for practical application of knowledge, such as internships, field placements, or research projects in international settings. These experiences can help students develop essential skills and gain real-world experience in working with diverse populations, conducting cross-cultural research, or engaging in international advocacy and policy work.

Consider the support services offered by the program, as they can greatly contribute to your overall educational experience. Look for programs that provide mentorship opportunities, career guidance, and networking resources to help students connect with professionals in the field of international psychology. These support services can be instrumental in shaping your academic and professional journey, particularly as you work towards conducting and completing doctoral research.

Enrolling in the best online doctorate program in international psychology requires that students comply with admissions requirements. The requirements are likely to vary somewhat between different colleges and universities, or between concentrations within the same degree.

The Ph.D. in International Psychology at the Washington, D.C. location of the Chicago School of Professional Psychology has one concentration. The admissions requirements for the Ph.D. in International Psychology, Organizations, and Systems concentration include:

  • Submitting the application with the required application fee
  • Submitting a resume or curriculum vitae
  • Providing a personal statement
  • Submitting evidence of three or more years of work experience
  • Providing official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities
  • Submitting evidence of completion of a master's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Showing documentation of three undergraduate or graduate courses in psychology completed with a grade of "C" or better

Why you should participate in a Global Education program

A major in Psychology provides a strong foundation for many different career fields. Global Education programs are a great way to differentiate your experience from other students when applying for graduate school or a job after graduation.

Global Education programs provide an opportunity for you to develop a valuable skill set that can set you apart from other applicants by:

  • Exposing you to unique differences in the human condition worldwide
  • Expanding your knowledge of other cultures
  • Challenging you to adapt and persevere under sometimes difficult and harsh social and cultural circumstances
  • Improving your language and cross cultural skills for effective communication across populations
  • Enhancing your portfolio of experience through the kinds of hands-on research and community-based opportunities you will need to compete and succeed in today’s workforce

Planning your program

When to participate in a global education program.

Psychology majors are fortunate as they have a lot of flexibility in course scheduling. This allows our majors the opportunity (in most circumstances) to participate in a Global Education program any semester after their first year. The Psychology Advising Office’s recommendation as to the process of planning and then participating in a Global Education program is as follows:

General advice

Advice from the department of psychology.

As a Psychology major, most students have the flexibility to take many elective courses during their degree program. It is recommended that students save some of these elective courses for their time participating in a Global Education program. If major coursework is needed, it is recommend that students choose from one of the recommended Global Education programs below that offer Psychology coursework. Students are always encouraged to consult with a Psychology Advisor prior to choosing where and when to participate in a Global Education program to determine the best time to participate in a Global Education program and which coursework is most appropriate to complete while abroad.

Advice from the Global Education Office

Research your funding options

Pursuing a global experience is an investment in your future. Like any other type of investment, it requires careful planning and management. However, the personal, academic, and professional rewards that you will gain from this experience will last a lifetime. You should carefully consider costs, budgets, and financing when selecting and preparing for your global experience.

Review Cost Sheet

You can find a Cost Sheet for your program on the Cost Info tab of the Global Education Office webpage for your program. The Cost Sheet will highlight the costs that are billed to your student account as well as additional estimated costs that are not billed to your student account but that you might expect to spend while participating. Be sure to note what expenses are included in the fees charged by the Global Education Office, and remember to budget additional money for airfare, passport and visa fees and personal expenses as needed since these are not included in any Program Fee.

Research Funding

Once you have reviewed the Cost Sheet for your program and are aware of the costs you might expect to spend on your program, you can begin to make a plan for financing your global education program. You can receive funding for your program through financial aid, scholarships and grants, and community-based fundraising efforts. We encourage you to:

  • Speak to  Financial Aid and Scholarship Services  (FASS) about financial aid;
  • Use our  Scholarships and Grants page  to search for general global education scholarships and scholarships that are unique to your program;
  • Read the  Community-Based Funding Guide  for creative ways that past ASU students have funded their programs.

Financial Aid

We encourage you to speak to a Financial Aid Counselor, who can help you figure out how your financial aid might be applied to your global education program. Be sure to seek answers to the following questions from a Financial Aid Counselor:

  • How do loans work for my global education program? What kinds of aid/loans do I currently receive, and are there any restrictions on this aid if I participate on a GEO program?
  • Have I reached the maximum of (insert name of) loan allowed per academic year?
  • When will funds be released for my semester of participation?
  • How will additional scholarships impact my ASU financial aid?

Major-Specific Scholarships

The  College of Liberal Arts & Sciences  offers Global Education scholarships for which you may apply.

MA International Disaster Psychology: Trauma and Global Mental Health

Explore this Section

Program Overview

The Master of Arts in International Disaster Psychology: Trauma and Global Mental Health program trains graduate students who become highly competent and committed mental health professionals. In addition to providing master's-level training in general clinical psychology, the program meets a clear need for specialized knowledge and experience to work in the trauma, disaster and global mental health fields. Our students provide mental health services, train and consult with agencies, develop emergency preparedness and response plans, and monitor and evaluate psychosocial interventions domestically and abroad. Students also develop a background in global mental health, a field that focuses on methods for increasing the mental health workforce in low-resource communities, addressing stigma regarding mental illness and mental health care and expanding beyond treatment models that are based on a Western understanding of disease and recovery.

Our students and alumni go on to provide quality, culturally-informed care, domestically and worldwide. They work with individuals and communities who are affected by traumatic events, acute and chronic civil conflict, natural disasters, health-related pandemics, and longstanding socioeconomic disparities.

Our program is recognized for Innovative Graduate Training by both the American Psychological Association and the National Council of Schools in Professional Psychology and is the first master’s degree program of its kind in the nation.

Study Abroad

Study abroad will open your mind and change your life. It will also prepare you for the global professional environment of the 21st century.

You can fit education abroad into your undergraduate experience in many ways-by taking electives for general education requirements, or by taking a mix of major courses and electives. It is important to start early to develop a strategy to integrate study abroad into your academic program.  Even if you do not start early enough, it does not mean you cannot take the opportunity to study abroad.  You will just need to be prepared for courses to be above and beyond your degree requirements.

Table of Contents

How can you strategize most effectively.

Start early in your Penn State career, and use the following resources:

  • The Education Abroad website describes the wide variety of programs, options, and financial aid available. Explore the grade requirements and application process, and note the deadlines of December 1 for fall programs, and April 1 for spring and full-year plans. The site also has information on the different types of programs Penn State offers: some are for independent-minded students ready to enroll directly in overseas universities; others provide curricula tailored to American students; and some have language or other course prerequisites. Programs vary in cost, and Penn State administers some offerings itself and runs others through partner institutions.
  • Peer advisers , students who participated in an international education experience, are available for consultation on a drop-in basis 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. , Monday-Friday, in 412 Boucke Building. They can tell you about the study abroad experience as well as the program selection and application process. You should visit a peer adviser before making an appointment with an Educational Abroad Adviser.
  • Education Abroad Advisers. It is important to work in partnership with an Education Abroad Adviser who works with the programs in the country you are interested in going to. After discussing where you want to go with a peer adviser, make an appointment with an Education Abroad Adviser (a professional adviser in the international office), to ask questions concerning your choice of program, the application process, and coordination requirements with academic advisers. Appointments may be made through Starfish or you can stop by the reception desk on 4 th floor Boucke (814-865-7681).  For general inquiries please email [email protected] .
  • Liberal Arts Liaison to Education Abroad.  Students who have narrowed down their choice of programs, but are unsure of which is best for them can meet with Chelsea Keen, [email protected] .  As the liaison, she can help discuss student choices and what they hope to get out of the abroad experience to help in coming to a decision.  She is adept in understanding the education abroad programs and is enthusiastic about helping students prepare to go abroad.
  • Academic advisers. It is also necessary to work in close partnership with your departmental and college advisers to review courses you plan to take while abroad to see what may fulfill course requirements you have to complete.  Please note that some courses may remain in your electives. The advisers can respond to your questions about the academic accreditation of courses you plan to take overseas. We recommend you stay in close touch with: 1) the Department of Psychology website: https://psych.la.psu.edu/ as well as 2) the College of the Liberal Arts academic advising website .

These are the key steps in making education abroad work for you. You will be surprised at how many options you have, how you can use your financial aid to study abroad, and how you can integrate education abroad into your curriculum and still graduate on time- if you start early to develop your strategy . Most students in education abroad are juniors and seniors; however, it is encouraged to not count on fulfilling major requirements while abroad. Your goal in studying abroad is to open your mind to the world while sharpening your professional qualifications.  Studying abroad is an opportunity that not all students receive the opportunity to participate in.  It is an experience that will stand out on your resume when applying for graduate schools and jobs as it will lend hand in you developing more self-reliance, self-confidence, and independence.

Where to Study Abroad

Below is a sampling of options suitable for students in Psychology . This list, which does not include all the programs open to you, gives you an idea of the kinds of programs available to you through the Penn State Education Abroad office.  You will find that a large majority of the programs will work for you especially if you are looking to fulfill electives, general education requirements, supporting coursework, and Bachelor of Arts requirements.  Please note that not every program is offered throughout the year as summer has a limited selection of programs to attend.

How to Make Education Abroad count toward your major: a sampler of course accreditations

A key to a successful study abroad strategy is to integrate your international courses as seamlessly as possible into your Penn State curriculum and on to your transcript. Below you’ll find a sampling of international courses in psychology which students have substituted for Penn State credit and grades.

Keep in mind that many education abroad courses will not be accredited as specific Penn State courses, but as PSYCH 299 or PSYCH 499, generic course numbers for “foreign studies in psychology.” Departmental advisers in psychology can help determine how these courses can be counted for the major. Another thing to keep in mind is that students who want to accredit an international course, which has not previously been accredited, are responsible for submitting a syllabus or course outline to the Education Abroad office with the cover sheet they provide. The Abroad office will review and send to the appropriate department for review.
