SoftMaker FreeOffice 2021 Now Available to Download

Softmaker FreeOffice 2021 is now available to download.

As with previous versions of this free (but not open source) alternative to Microsoft Office, the full suite of apps is available across Windows, macOS, and Linux with no feature limitations or patchy coverage.

While SoftMaker says this is a “completely revised version” that is “seamlessly compatible with Microsoft Office” file formats, both new and old, it’s hard to know what’s new in FreeOffice 2021 specifically as there’s no official change-log detailing the changes between this and the previous FreeOffice release.

That said, SoftMaker do mention a couple of highlights — just don’t expect most of the features from last year’s commercial SoftMaker Office 2021 release.

FreeOffice 2021 Features

TextMaker 2021 (the Microsoft Word analog) now supports ‘simultaneous use of footnotes and endnotes in the same document.’

PlanMaker 2021  offers ‘extended pivot tables’ and ‘conditional formatting’ as well as full compatibility with Microsoft Excel 2019, 2021 and 365.

Finally,  Presentations 2021  is described as “even more compatible with PowerPoint” than before, with new animation and slide transitions based on OpenGL.

And that’s pretty much it.

But is it any good?

Now, I don’t use office software much at all, so I can’t tell you how it compares to OnlyOffice or LibreOffice or even OpenOffice. On paper it competes favourably, but the real test comes from usage.

Despite the emphasis on Microsoft Office SoftMaker’s FreeOffice 2021 is a capable productivity suite in its own right. While it continues to lack a little in its compatibility for OpenDocument Formats (something Microsoft Office is now doing) it’s an attractive alternative for Linux users looking for a robust, modern office suite.

A swathe of UI options (including Ribbon and classic text-based menus) are available, as is a pseudo-dark mode. This visual flexibility combined with its feature set make it a compelling choice.

In summary, if you’re looking for a competent, capable, and cheap (it’s free) Microsoft Office alternative for any desktop OS then FreeOffice is well-worth checking out.

SoftMaker FreeOffice is a free Microsoft Office-compatible productivity suite.

The package includes a word processor (TextMaker), spreadsheet (PlanMaker) and presentation tool (SoftMaker), and each of these can open both the old-style and Office 2021/365 files for their equivalent Microsoft application (DOC and DOCX/ DOCM/ DOTX/ DOTM, XLS and XLSX, PPT and PPTX, and so on). And reasonably accurately, too, although there are occasional problems with more complex documents.

If you're not a fan of the Microsoft Office ribbon then the SoftMaker FreeOffice interface may appeal, as it also offers a classic style (a ribbon is available an option) to the more conventional menus and toolbars.

And the suite has plenty of useful extra features, including a handy "Export to PDF" option on every File menu, and the ability to be installed on a USB flash drive.

If you need more, though, SoftMaker is hoping you'll upgrade to the commercial version, SoftMaker Office 2021, which can be yours from $99.95. The commercial version has a more flexible user-interface, including a dark mode, includes a 64-bit version, advanced document creation, advanced presentations and much more.

SoftMaker FreeOffice offers effortless editing of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. It can also export files in EPUB and PDF export.

FreeOffice contains three apps: TextMaker for documents, PlanMaker for spreadsheets and Presentations for slideshows. You don’t get every feature in the free version – tabbed browsing and the thesaurus are saved for the paid-for product, for example – but all the basics of everyday office work are covered very well indeed.

User experience

Before you can download SoftMaker FreeOffice, you'll be prompted to enter your name, country and email address. You'll then be sent a free registration code, though it isn't actually necessary to enter this in order to start using the software.

Once you start using it, you'll find SoftMaker FreeOffice fast and user-friendly. It looks very similar to older editions of Microsoft Office) and provides almost seamless compatibility with Microsoft Office files from 1997 onwards. It supports the same OpenDocument format used by LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice too.

SoftMaker FreeOffice can create PDFs too – something that can be a bit of a pain on Windows normally – and the spreadsheet app is happy doing database tasks as well as crunching numbers.

It's a shame that the thesaurus is only available in the premium version, but there have to be some concessions. SoftMaker FreeOffice doesn't offer quite the same breadth of tools as LibreOffice either (there's no tool for mathematical formulae or diagrams, for example), but it's otherwise a superb free suite that will serve you extremely well.

German developer SoftMaker Software GmbH has unveiled the latest version of its free office suite for Windows, Mac and Linux. SoftMaker FreeOffice 2021 is the first major release in over three years, and provides free alternatives to the key components of Microsoft Office, namely Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

New features are thin on the ground, and form just a subset of those that accompanied the commercial release of SoftMaker Office 2021 last year.

Word processor TextMaker 2021 gains support for 'simultaneous use of footnotes and endnotes within the same document', while Powerpoint alternative Presentations 2021 adds new OpenGL-based animations and slide transitions, which -- SoftMaker promises -- improves compatibility with PowerPoint documents.

The suite’s spreadsheet -- PlanMaker 2021 -- gains extended pivot tables and support for conditional formatting, while being updated to ensure compatibility with the latest versions of Excel, including 2019, 2021 and 365.

Other changes include initial support for the SVG graphics format and the ability to use a single license across all three operating systems at once.

The build is based on the latest version of SoftMaker’s commercial release, SoftMaker Office 2021 , but lacks many of the features added to that release, which include fold marks in documents, portable slideshows and page break previews in PlanMaker.

SoftMaker FreeOffice 2021 is available now as a free download for Windows, Mac and Linux. Users can install the program on up to three computers. The full commercial version comes in two editions – Home and Universal -- which can be bought via annual or monthly subscription, or a one-time purchase, with annual subscriptions costing $29.90 (Home) and $49.90 (Universal) respectively.

Creating a new presentation

Each presentation that you create is saved as a separate file. You can open multiple presentations at the same time and work on them in parallel. For example, you can quickly copy information from one presentation to another. For more information, see Working with multiple documents .

To enable you to start a new presentation immediately, an empty document with the default slide design is always created after the program starts.

(Note: If you click on the icon's arrow instead, you'll see the slide designs you previously used. For more information, see Starting a new presentation .)

Tip: Use the key combination Ctrl+N to quickly open a new presentation with the current default slide design, while skipping the dialog box shown below.

The dialog box shows you an overview of all slide designs that Presentations provides. Select the desired design and confirm with OK . Presentations will then create your new presentation.
