Why kids, families, and adults love Expressable.

"Robin is amazing! She has made my daughter feel comfortable throughout the entire process! She was always open to try new techniques and adjust the process to find what clicked with my daughter."

speech therapy on the go

Robin helped this client improve their sound production and overall conversational speech.
"We had the most perfect therapist, Fabine. She was joyful, patient, encouraging and always enthusiastic. Our daughter quickly mastered the work and was discharged months earlier than we expected! We liked the twice a week format. It was clearly more beneficial than once a week, in person. Additionally, the homework helped us support her new sounds at home."

Fabine helped this client reach age-appropriate sound production to effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas.
"Inga gave me hope in a world of false diagnoses. She was beyond sweet and caring with my son. The screen did not make the session feel distant or dry, it felt very familiar and every week we looked forward to it."

Any questions?

Communication is one of our most vital, life-long skills. Speech therapy can help children reach communication milestones appropriate for their age; clearly articulate their thoughts, feelings, and ideas; comprehend the language of others; and develop socially. It also contributes to their academic success and emotional well-being. Plus so much more!

The first step is to schedule an evaluation with a speech therapist. They’ll assess your child’s communication development and make a professional recommendation as to whether your child could benefit from speech therapy.

There is no minimum age. Communication skills begin developing in infancy. Building strong language skills in very young children can set the foundation for strong communication and literacy skills later on. Speech therapy is particularly important for children who aren’t reaching age-appropriate communication milestones, or who are experiencing difficulties such as stuttering or a lisp. Because speech and language patterns become more ingrained over time, the earlier speech errors can be corrected, the better the outcomes are likely to be.

The duration of speech therapy is different for everyone, and it depends on several factors. This includes the type of speech disorder or communication challenge, the frequency of speech therapy sessions, how often you and your child practice the skills taught in speech therapy at home, your child’s age, any underlying medical conditions, and more.

Most children love online speech therapy! Many become more attentive with online learning, and they prefer the interactivity of online exercises and communication. Plus, there are many effective strategies that speech therapists use to engage children online. Expressable’s model of care also focuses on the most important component of improving children’s speech and language skills: the involvement of their parent or caregiver. When parents are actively involved in their child’s care, that leads to faster progress. Our therapists work directly with caregivers to teach them techniques and strategies they can use in their child’s everyday life.

Speech therapy sessions are focused on each client’s care plan, and the activities done during sessions always relate to those goals. So, if a person is in speech therapy to better pronounce the /s/ sound, they’ll begin by learning how to make the sound by itself and work up to practicing it in conversation. Or if someone wants to improve the quality of their voice, their speech therapist will teach them appropriate breathing and vocal exercises. The therapist will aim to do as many trials of each exercise as possible, in order to make the most of each session.

Your speech therapist will constantly be measuring and assessing your response to these exercises. When needed, they’ll make changes to your treatment plan to help you make progress as quickly as possible. Regardless of your goals, your speech therapist will always provide practice activities to complete at home between sessions.

Expressable currently accepts many of the largest insurance companies, and we’re actively working on contracting with new plans across the country. We also offer affordable private pay options and accept HSAs/FSAs for those who do not have insurance coverage or prefer to pay out-of-pocket.

5 Communication and Speech Therapy Strategies on the Go

Sometimes it can feel like life is so busy that we have to schedule time just to sit and breathe. So how can we fit in the extra practice and support our kids need for building speech skills? We have to make the most of communication and speech therapy strategies on the go – even in small bits and pieces. Talk with your child’s SLP about ideas, and see if some of the following can help you and your child make the most of your time on the move.

5 Speech Therapy Strategies on the Go for Busy Families

1. i spy a rhyming word.

Take the classic game of I Spy and play it with a twist . As you’re driving, “spy” an object with your child and take turns coming up with as many rhyming words as you can. The last person who is able to come up with a rhyming word gets to spy the next object out the window for another round.

2. Life in the Other Lane

This game not only passes the time, but it helps to build storytelling skills , descriptive vocabulary, and stretches the imagination. As you and your child are commuting to the next activity, have her find a vehicle of other commuters or a family walking their dog – any other fellow people on the go. Then work together with your child to build a story about those people. Maybe the man driving the truck is wearing a baseball hat so you begin by saying “That is Frank and he is on his way to see his first Red Sox game.” See how creative you both can get, imagining the lives of the people around you.

3. Alphabet Sign Game

This is great for pre-reading and phonics skills. As you drive with your child, look for road signs, billboards, or even license plates. The goal is to move through the alphabet in order. For example, to start the game you’ll need to find a sign with the letter A – but don’t just have your child call out “A!” – have him say the phonetic pronunciations of the letter, too. Then it is time to search for a B, C, and so on.

4. Books on CD

Literacy is an integral part of communication skills. Build those reading skills on the go with an effective collection of books on CD or tape (many libraries offer them for loan). Besides being able to help build those reading skills while you’re driving between soccer practices and grocery shopping, audiobooks have several benefits for kids who struggle with speech and communication.

  • Makes books accessible that might otherwise be too challenging because of unfamiliar vocabulary, unique character name pronunciations, or cultural dialects
  • Reinforces listening skills that are extremely valuable for communication
  • Exposes kids to different reading styles, as often the authors will read their own literature aloud

5. Soak Up Some Words

Kids who are kinesthetic learners or who have sensory issues can find it very difficult to be strapped into a seatbelt and still able to concentrate effectively. Give them some tactile learning options by taking several large, soft sponges and cutting them into 1″x3″ rectangles. On each one write a word of an object your child is likely to see along the way: truck, bird, cloud, barn, train, etc. and place the sponge tiles in a zippered bag or container. As your child sees these things, have her find the sponge tile with the matching word and read the spelling of it. Kids with sensory needs are given that tactile activity of holding the word, squeezing it, and working on that important muscle memory.

Finding the time to give our kids everything they need can feel like an overwhelming responsibility some days. However, if we stretch our imaginations, adjusting traditional travel games to fit our needs, we can make the most of those minutes driving between the seemingly endless activities and appointments or waiting for the next one to begin.

Ideas for on-the-go Speech Therapy activities

Do you take your students outside the speech room for therapy activities? Or do you ever just travel room to room and not stay in one speech room? Although most of my speech time is spend in my therapy room, I love changing things up on occasion. This is especially helpful when you have kids who need to be active, students who need high engaging activities to motivate them, or you are just stuck in a rut of the same old thing. Here are some ideas to get you out of the speech room…don’t forget the link below to get your free download!

Speech Therapy Caddy

I get caddies at Michael’s, Lakeshore Learning , Hobby Lobby, and Target – they come in so many fun colors. In the past, I’ve used them for center activities and desk organization. Now I primarily use them for on-the-go speech therapy activities.

One of the benefits I have found is this helps to limit the kids asking for other activities they find on my shelves or in my closet. So I let them know we are only doing the caddy activities . Reducing distractions is always a plus.

I love that they stack up for easy storage in my closet!

Download this FREE caddy label for your speech therapy materials and supplies organization!

Items you can include in your Speech On-The-Go caddy:

TpT printable resources:

1/2 sheet like Battle Style Dice and Dot for Speech & Language or Articulation Trials . Task card sized resources like Articulation Cards , Phonology Cards , or Building Bricks Speech & Language fit perfectly in them also!

crayons, markers, dot markers, jumbo dice, scissors, glue sticks (use pencil pouches for more organization)

Materials/Toys:

small race cars, blocks, LEGOs, mini objects, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, etc.

Have you used these storage caddies for your speech therapy sessions? What materials do you include? Download a fun caddy label below!

I’ve included several color options so I hope you find one you can use! I’d love to see how you use the caddy in speech – tag me in your social media posts so I can share them on my account! —> @ashleyrossislp on Instagram!

Tips and Tools for Speech Therapy: Therapy on the Go

speech therapy on the go

Are you a traveling SLP? Do you feel like you spend more time walking the halls to get students than in your office providing services? By any chance, are you at one school but do not have an actual office?   Do you find that by the time you pick up your students on one end of campus to take them out to your portable that is on the opposite end of campus that you have just enough time to touch the door and head back? Been there!  Done that! Yes, I have been in ALL of these situations and I KNOW that I am NOT alone in finding a way to just make it work in an effort to provide the best services possible to our favorite little clients (our students!).

  • INVEST IN A ROLLING CART- I love mine! It has really come in handy and saved my back when I found myself without a permanent office.
  • Door-to-Door RTI or Serving Speedy Speech (or Daily Apraxia) Kiddos: I could just put all my materials in the cart and roll around the school site without losing time from picking students up and walking to office and back.  It made schedules with heavy caseloads easier too!
  • Hauling Early Childhood Props : When I provide services to our Early Childhood Class, I like to bring a lot of goodies!  I typically go along with my Early Childhood Teacher’s thematic plan and choose a book with the theme and build my whole group lesson around the theme or dramatic play but targeting specific skills that the kiddos are working on. This often requires a lot of props.  The cart is also helpful in hauling the materials to target individual goals when working with some of my Pre-K kiddos individually.
  • Goodies Galore for Self-Contained : I like to have more than just one or two Type A Level Reinforcers in my goodie bag while working with my self-contained students with Autism or Multiple Disabilities.  When possible, I use the materials in the class especially when teaching them to communicate using their device or a picture exchange system.  It is best practices since those are the materials in their immediate environment and what they will have access to when making requests or commenting. However, sometimes those items are no longer reinforcing and I need to pull out some of my own goodies to get a response.
  • TABLET- Oh, how technology has made my life easier!! It is almost like it is my own little communication device. I do not always use it, but it is great to have on hand!  Between the many different application programs I have on there to address a wide range of skills, quick articulation screener, or to use as a reinforcer, my tablet is an easy go to and now I do not have to carry a million books or copies of papers from books.  Plus, it saves the trees by not having to make so many hard copies.
  • Dropbox – I have easy access to some of my favorite TpT products on here, as well as important school information to make jumping from school site to school site easier on me.
  • Moka – Do you have this app?  If not, you may want to consider the small investment to get it.  I am able to put some of my old files or books in these apps.  For example, I have put a folder of search and find games into them and I am able to easily pull them up.
  • Searching by Sound: I have the students find pictures that have their sounds in it and highlight the picture or circle it.
  • Language Ideas: Same as the ideas as above but I describe an item and they have to find it or I provide the student with 1-3 step directions and they complete the task using the highlighter and colored pencils.
  • No Print Tpt- I put a lot of my No Print TpT products in here.  Then it really is No Print and I can move around in the product as it is intended.

What about the students that time seems to be wasted when you have a long walk but there is simply just no place to see them outside their class and they have a lot of service minutes (traditional services)? I have some ideas for that too! I won’t discuss them all, as I have put six of them into a little freebie for you and you can just go download them and have them on a ring as a go to.  But I will mention a few fun games I play while we make that long walk.

Grab this Freebie!  Therapy on the Go!

SOUND SEARCH- While walking from point A to point B, I ask the kiddos to look around their environment and see if they see anything that contains the sound they are working on.  If there is, I have them say the word while practicing good placement, say it a set amount of times, and then tell me if the sound was at the beginning, middle, or end of the word.  If they are past the word level, then I have them use it in at least two different phrases or two different sentences.  If it is a word that has more than one meaning, I ask if they can think of two different meanings for the word and use it in a sentence in at least two different ways.  The point is, I want them thinking, engaging, and not wasting time while we walk towards our destination.

The Benefits of Speech Therapy

What to expect, frequently asked questions.

A speech-language pathologist (SLP) can help you with speech, language, and swallowing. They provide speech therapy to children and adults who may have speech or language disorders.

People with certain medical conditions may also benefit from speech therapy. Medical conditions that may cause speech or swallowing impairment include traumatic brain injury , stroke (brain damage due to a blood vessel blockage or bleed), and dementia (decline in memory and thinking functions).

This article looks at the various uses for speech therapy, what to expect during a session, and the techniques involved in this type of therapy.

Verywell / Theresa Chiechi

Speech therapy can help with a variety of conditions.

Speech Disorders

Speech therapy may help with speech disorders like:

  • Stuttering : Stuttering may involve repeating parts of words, prolonging words, or struggling to get out certain words. You may be more likely to have a stutter if you have a family history of stuttering.
  • Apraxia : This motor speech disorder makes it difficult to move the tongue and lips to make sounds required for speech. In some cases, people with apraxia cannot speak at all. Causes for this disorder include brain tumors, dementia, stroke, and any other condition that causes brain injury.
  • Voice : Voice disorders can be temporary or permanent and make it hard to speak. Chronic voice disorders include chronic cough, vocal fold paralysis, vocal polyps (growths on the vocal cords), and spasmodic dysphonia (vocal cord spasms).
  • Dysarthria : People with this speech disorder have muscle weakness that makes it difficult to talk. They may slur or mumble their words. Dysarthria can happen due to brain injury or chronic degenerative conditions like Parkinson’s disease or Huntington’s disease .

Language Disorders

A language disorder ( aphasia ) is a condition that makes it difficult for a person to read, write, speak, or understand speech or other modes of communication.

Someone with this type of disorder may struggle to:

  • Use incorrect words for things
  • Say complete sentences
  • Understand what other people say
  • Understand jokes
  • Read or spell

Brain tumors, traumatic brain injuries, and degenerative disorders that affect cognitive function can all cause aphasia.

Feeding and Swallowing Disorders

Feeding and swallowing disorders can occur in both children and adults. A feeding disorder involves trouble with eating, sucking, drinking from a cup, or chewing. The specific term for swallowing disorders is dysphagia . Children or adults with dysphagia have trouble swallowing food or drink.

Problems swallowing or feeding may or may not be related to a medical condition. Conditions that may cause a swallowing or feeding disorder include:

  • Cleft palate or cleft lip
  • Asthma and other breathing issues
  • Heart disease
  • Premature birth
  • Nervous system disorders
  • Reflux
  • Muscle weakness
  • Sensory issues
  • Autism
  • Behavior problems
  • Certain medications

Speech therapy begins with an evaluation to assess your difficulties and whether any structural issues contribute to your speech, language, feeding, or swallowing problems. An evaluation may involve a standardized test to help determine what you most need help with. Informal conversations may also help figure out your needs.

A speech-language pathologist will then work with you to help improve your ability to speak, converse, or swallow. This may involve:

  • Educating you on how to do certain things like articulating or pronouncing sounds
  • Teaching you language skills
  • Providing you with educational materials
  • Giving you exercises to help strengthen your muscles
  • Giving you exercises that help you breathe better
  • Participation in group therapy sessions

You should also expect to practice the skills and exercises you learn in speech therapy sessions at home. Your speech-language pathologist may provide you with workbooks, worksheets, or virtual apps for at-home practice.

Speech Therapy for Adults

Depending on the reason you’re seeking out speech therapy, a speech-language pathologist may:

  • Help you learn to move your muscles correctly to make sounds if you have apraxia or dysarthria
  • Teach you how to use your breath to speak louder if you have dysarthria
  • Help you learn to manage stuttering by teaching you to lower stress levels in certain situations
  • Help you strengthen your mouth muscles to make it easier to swallow and eat if you have a feeding or swallowing disorder due to a brain injury or disease

Speech Therapy for Children

A speech-language pathologist’s approach will depend on the child. When working with a child who has a feeding or swallowing disorder, they might focus on:

  • Strengthening the muscles of the mouth
  • Helping the child with chewing
  • Encouraging the child to try new food and drink
  • Changing food texture to make it easier to swallow food
  • Helping with sensory issues related to food

Other skills a speech-language pathologist may work on with a child include:

  • Language complexity : For example, they might teach words like "and" and "or" to connect ideas within sentences.
  • Conversation skills : This may include role-playing to help the child with socialization and improve their read of social cues.
  • Vocabulary : They may use games or storytelling to help build the child’s vocabulary.
  • Phonological awareness : This recognition of the sounds that make up words is an important skill for reading. The SLP may work on helping the child identify sounds and rhymes in words to build this skill.

Healthcare professionals will also test your child’s hearing to see if hearing loss may be contributing to language and speech issues.

If you or your child is getting speech therapy from a qualified speech-language pathologist, you might wonder how likely it is that you’ll see improvement in speech, language, or feeding.

Results will depend on the individual. It’s also essential to follow the exercises, tips, and strategies provided by the speech-language professional. Regular visits and keeping up with practice activities and exercises make it more likely to see an improvement in yourself or your child.

A speech-language pathologist works with children or adults who have speech, language, or feeding and swallowing disorders. Typically the first session will involve an evaluation to determine the areas that are causing you the most problems.

From there, they may teach you exercises and strategies to improve your speech, language, or ability to swallow and eat.

A Word From Verywell

Think you or your child would benefit from speech therapy? Get in touch with your primary healthcare provider and ask for a recommendation. You can also use the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA)  Find a Certified SLP Tool .

Not all children develop at the same rate, but if your child has issues understanding language, doesn’t use gestures, or doesn’t seem to be learning new words, you might consider having them evaluated by a speech therapist.

While this may depend on the individual and the cause of speech-related problems, research suggests that speech and language therapy can significantly improve speech and language issues.

One example of a typical speech therapy technique is articulation therapy. This technique teaches the person to make specific sounds, sometimes by showing them how to move their mouth or tongue.

A language delay is when a child has difficulty in speaking and understanding speech that is unusual for their age.

AAC Core Word of the Week: GO Speech Therapy Activities

FREE access to AAC "Core Word of the Week (CWW): GO!" Find fun and engaging speech therapy activities utilizing the CWW approach. Complete CWW lesson plan also available!

What are core words?

Core words, also known as core vocabulary , are the words that make up most of what we use to communicate. These approximately 200 words are about 60-80% of the words we use every day. Core words can be used in many different contexts, which is why they’re important to understand! They can include verbs, pronouns, prepositions, and more. The rest of the language we use is made up of fringe words .

How to Teach Core Words

Individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) often benefit from intervention that specifically targets the use of core words.

The core word of the week approach is a common way to target core words in speech therapy sessions, in the classroom, and in other instructional environments Using this approach, one core word is targeted multiple times over the course of the week to increase exposure to it and highlight how it can be used in different contexts.

Speech, Language and Swallowing Therapy in the comfort of your own home

Speech Language Pathology services

Speech Therapy Options for Pediatric and Adult Clients

Speech & Articulation

Pediatrics:

We are skilled in treating articulation delay or differences in children that are impacting speech intelligibility. Speech sound production is an important part of speech and language development! Articulation changes can develop over time, or may be secondary to surgery or dental changes.

Adults:

Adults can also experience changes to speech that impact intelligibility. This may be due to neurologic changes (stroke, TBI, progressive disease) or dentition changes. Aggressive speech therapy is crucial to re-training and/or compensating for speech changes.

Speech-Therapist

Language Skills Therapy

Pediatrics:

You may notice your child is falling behind in school, or they may be receiving speech services at school that can be supplemented with additional therapy at home to maximize potential in meeting their language goals. Private speech therapy services may be beneficial to ensure that your child is able to learn and grow academically.

As with speech changes, many adults experience changes in both receptive and expressive language as a results of neurologic changes (stroke, TBI, progressive disease). Our language therapy approach is structured around functional and patient-specific language goals.

Swallowing Therapy

Swallowing difficulty, or dysphagia, occurs in many adults across diagnoses. We see too often patients being discharged from the hospital or rehab center with a diagnosis of dysphagia, or recommendations for a modified diet, without clear follow up information or a plan to return to functional and safe eating and drinking.

Stuttering Therapy

Stuttering, or dysfluency, is an extremely complex change to one's speech pattern. Stuttering is most often present throughout one's life, and some therapy techniques focus on hiding the stutter. This frequently results in feelings of shame, and development of maladaptive secondary behaviors (such as saying um, avoiding words, or avoid eye contact) to avoid stuttering. Christa Wojcik MA, CCC-SLP is trained in Avoidance Reduction Therapy for children, adolescents, and adults who stutter. This therapy approach strips down the speech pattern to reduce the secondary behaviors, adjust the speech pattern to be more comfortable, and forward-moving.

Head and Neck Cancer Services

Speech and swallowing needs should be considered in every patient pre, during and post any treatment for head and neck cancers. Whether treatment involves surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of these, changes to the head and neck tissue and speech and swallowing mechanisms are known to be significantly impacted. With early implementation of speech and swallowing therapy techniques, head and neck cancer survivors can help to ward off negative effects of head and neck cancer treatment.

The best street in Rostov-on-Don

The nicest street, excellent botanical work - all season flowering trees, except deep winter. Nice pedestrial zone. The rich and businesslike rostovites lives here next door to regional establishment.

Bolshaya Sadovaya Street

Good and well maintained park with greenery all over to chill out in summer as well in all season.it's in heart of the city and all facilities nearby.

speech therapy on the go

Nice peaceful walk on this street, would love to see in summer Lots of restaurants, coffee shops. Defiantly go back.

Very pretty boulevarde especially at this time of the year when all the flowers and bushes are blooming. We strolled up and down taking in the views and admiring some of the grand architecture of yesteryear which still remains today.

Definitely one of the best places to have a walk in the city of Rostov-on-Don. The street is very green and you can have a special sensation there on a hot summer day. There are lots of old buildings conveying the atmosphere of real Rostov. You can walk along the whole length but the boulevard becomes especially beautiful when you go eastwards after having reached Voroshilovsky street. In many places you can enjoy free wi-fi. Pay attention to the Don Public Library building and the house of Sabina Spielrein, famous psychoanalyst who worked with Carl Gustav Jung and Sigmund Freud. The rostovian scientist was featured in David Cronenberg's Dangerous Method movie in 2011.

Tree lined walkways with beautiful people and artwork make this a very special walk. Very interesting statues and artwork many depicting parts of Pushkin's life. Worth the time.
