Ubc theses and dissertations, women and political influence : evidence from local elections in the philippines tolentino, charis mae a. --> -->.
In terms of female political leadership, the Philippines is one of the most progressive countries in Asia. At the same time, these rankings and statistics focus largely on holding national office, which masks broader problems with women’s participation at the local level. For example, Labonne, Parsa, and Querubin (2016) find that the increasing number of women in Philippine national politics is largely driven by political dynasties, rather than an expansion of opportunities for women to participate in politics. As a result, while there are certainly many women in the legislature, these women tend to reflect the policy preferences and political platforms of their relatives and do not represent new voices in the decision-making process. In order to increase not only the number of women in politics but also the opportunity for new women to enter politics, it is important to understand the underlying dynamics driving gender and political influence at the local level, because it is the primary entry point for new, non-dynastic candidates in the political system. Using household-level data collected through a survey of 284 villages in 12 municipalities after the 2013 local elections in the Philippines, this analysis shows that women are less likely to be politically influential than men even at the local village level, an effect that is driven by gender differences in recognizing influence and in socioeconomic factors that affect the ability to participate in politics. This is important because there are gender differences in policy preferences and political views. From a policy standpoint, this thesis has three main contributions: 1) providing a methodology for identifying politically influential women at the local level; 2) analyzing the differences in policies and profiles between influential men and women; and 3) linking the determinants of political influence to policy recommendations for promoting and supporting these women to enable them to better participate in the political sphere. In order for women to have a voice in Philippine politics, it is not enough to have more women holding office on paper, but to ensure that women are given the same opportunities and avenues for participation in politics.

Rodrigo Duterte’s electoral victory in the 2016 presidential elections in the Philippines allowed him to implement a violent war on drugs, undermine liberal democratic institutions, and shift the country’s foreign policy direction away from active engagement with the United Nations (UN) and towards rapprochement with China in relation to the South China Sea dispute. The rise of Duterte constitutes both a continuation and a subversion of political elite rule in the Philippines. By weakening the political opposition and the business elite through utilising the law and social media; co-opting many members of Congress and the judiciary; and politicising the bureaucracy and the military, Duterte was able to consolidate his power. His draconian policies drew international condemnation. He responded by formally ending the Philippines’ membership of the International Criminal Court and threatening to withdraw from the UN and those of its agencies that were critical of his government’s human rights violations. In doing so, Duterte unilaterally reversed the Philippines’ long-standing commitments to human rights and the rule of law. By not invoking the ruling of an international tribunal on the South China Sea, Duterte lost important political leverage in promoting an international legal framework for strengthening the protection of the Philippines’ claim to its exclusive economic zone from the assertive campaign by China to establish full control of the South China Sea. Despite Duterte’s appeasement policy, Beijing has been intensifying its intrusions into the Philippines’ and other ASEAN countries’ territorial waters, a trend that threatens the security of the Asia–Pacific region.

PHILIPPINE POLITICAL CULTURE

My intention with this textbook is to present the three ‘legs’ on which the context of investigation is based when political culture is discussed and different political cultures are compared. My ‘triangular framework’ will show the major notions and points of reference to help students comprehend the complexity of political culture. The book comprises two parts: both have four chapters. In Part I, we first set the scene for our ‘interpolar world’ and the major interconnecting processes and interconnected entities without which, in my view, no comparison of political cultures can be imagined. The emphasis will be laid on the local attributes and on how globalization can be seen and managed at the local levels. Chapters 3 and 4 will give an overview of the basic notions and their historic development, but even more of their present-day potential usage. Many tangible examples are used to support the flow of explanation with a firm intention to include excerpts of useful texts and interpretations of leading scholars. These are provided for deeper analysis both as texts and as points of departure, because we believe that students want to find out more about the given issues. Chapter 5 presents some of the characteristics of Hungarian political culture, especially those which offer some room for more debate in the classroom and beyond. Part II is compiled as a Reader with four selected texts, each of them telling students more about various issues of political culture across the globe. First, we read about African political cultures and how much anthropological thinking can add to our deeper understanding of how these cultures may be constructed. Second, we look at a survey data analysis about Southeast Asian political cultures. This piece has also been chosen with the aim to provide students with an important methodological example not only for further research, but also for going beyond the macro perspective of related notions. Third, a useful summary of six major factors is offered so that we can understand more Latin American political cultures. Fourth, we again return to Central Europe and read about the central question of social justice with regard to political cultures in this post-Soviet region. This final text is also a fine example for showing how an introductory chapter of a book, or even a dissertation can be written. Therefore, from an academic writing point of view, it can be useful for students in their final year with who are just about to prepare their final thesis. The textbook uses several info boxes, which provide either definitions or certain excerpts of academic works in direct connection with the topics of discussion. At the end of each chapter there is a list of review questions and suggested further readings, which are designed to help students develop a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the interconnected concepts of the book. All the texts (or parts of texts) and the papers in the Reader serve the purpose of fostering critical reading and thinking as well as sound argumentative discussion and interpretation.
There are political norms that guide how societies and individuals think and behave in political affairs. Each society's political systems have its own norms, values and different purposes on how to process them. It is necessary to understand the political tendencies in society for analyzing the political culture which is an important determinant of the political system. But at the same time, it is necessary to know the thoughts, expectations and perceptions of individuals about the political system. All these factors are very important for analyzing the role of social opinion in the political system. The concept of culture must be understood firstly for the better understanding of the political culture.Culture describes the way society communicates through learning through generations. Political culture constitutes the general environment for the decision-making process within the political system. The main dimensions of political cultures are ethnicity, religion and value orientations. The first significant work of political culture was made by Gabriel Almond and Sidney Verba's work of The Civic Culture in 1963. In their book, Almond and Verba argued that the states who have legacies of different political heritages that shape attitudes towards governments and participations to public relations and spreading the political establishments. Culture Concept And Political Culture Although culture is one of the strongest concepts of social sciences, politics has started late to study the concept of culture and to study its relation to other social concepts. The concept of culture that we started to see in political science studies in the 1950s has begun to attract great interest immediately and has pioneered many studies examining the term of political culture. In the 1960s the literature studies dominated the term of political socialization. First of all, political culture should be opened to the basic elements of culture. The diversity of political cultures arises in ethnicity, religion and value orientation. The concept of political culture gains new scope and conformity in societies that are becoming increasingly multicultural.A number of cultural theories on politics predict political outcomes from cultural events, the concept of culture will be discussed with the...

In this assignment I will present how do political and social researchers define political culture giving the essence and substance of it? Moreover I will study what do political and social scientists focus on and how could political culture be measured. Furthermore I will try to answer the question why is culture important when studying politics explaining the importance of culture as political factor and dimension. Lastly I will present the different theoretical and methodological approaches about political culture. To sum up, I think that political culture never addresses individuals or societies singly. It holds that individuals are the fundamental units of societies and does so in a way that embraces the attributes of both personality and social systems. The political and social sciences emphasize different factors, such as how individuals or groups are socialized, how different individuals organize their thinking about rules and norms, how discourse affects the legitimacy of political institutions, how and what are the political consequences of all of them. Latsly, it is impossible to speak of a single political culture approach as each of both sciences utilizes different approaches to solve different problems and to suit different methodologies.
This article critically discusses the field of political culture research. It reviews the historical development of the concept of political culture since the 1950s. It examines some of the key authors and approaches in political science and political sociology. Special attention is paid to the conceptual and methodological innovations of the last few decades, including neo-Tocquevillian, multi-causal and neo-Durkheimian approaches to the study of the concept.

Political culture is a complex concept, containing many different understandings and research methods from many different perspectives. Studies of political culture have emerged since World War II, and scholars continue to discuss this concept in the context of many inconsistent views in the academic world because of the interdisciplinary nature of this concept. Based on research results on the definitions, functions, and relations of political culture with organizational culture and management culture; by secondary qualitative data analysis method; this article concludes that the most similar point between the definitions of "political culture" is the recognition of the relationship between political culture and the state, with society with nation-state and class, the recognition that the inner meaning of political culture always includes dynamic elements as well as static elements, and acknowledges that the subject of political culture can be studied at all three levels of the individual, institution (organization), and community (state, nation).

That is why, in the interest of research, we conduct various scientific studies, which examine the definitions of each type, taking into account comparative analysis, limited within the political science, only in To study political culture, it is important to have a clear definition of it. At the same time, it is important to define the role of political culture in society. We need to measure to be challenged role of political culture in society and then measure it in detail. We have studied the concept and perception of political culture in order to justify the real political situation in our country, using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods of research. The main purpose of this article is to clarify the real situation of political culture and the picture of how they represent and express their voices. One of the main assumptions of the study of political culture is considered to be the need for it and the impact of its adequacy.
