A research analyst is a professional who prepares investigative reports on securities or assets for in-house or client use. Other names for this function include securities analyst, investment analyst, equity analyst, rating analyst, or simply " analyst ."

The work conducted by the research analyst is in an effort to inquire, examine, find or revise facts, principles, and theories for internal use by a financial institution or an external financial client. The report an analyst prepares entails the examination of public records of securities of companies or industries, and often concludes with a "buy," "sell" or "hold" recommendation.

If the research analyst is involved with an investment bank or a securities firm controlled by a member organization of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), they may be required to register with a self-regulatory organization (SRO) and/or take certain exams.

The Basics of Being a Research Analyst

Research analysts are usually divided into two groups: "buy-side" and "sell-side" analysts. Buy-side analysts will determine how promising an investment seems and how well it coincides with the fund's investment strategy. Sell-side analysts are those who issue recommendations of "strong buy," "outperform," "neutral," or "sell."

Research analysts can work at a variety of companies, such as at asset management companies, investment banks, insurance companies, hedge funds, pension funds, brokerages or any business that needs to crunch data to spot trends or decide on a valuation, make an investment decision, or forecast the outlook of a company or asset. According to Glassdoor, the average base pay salary for a research analyst is $56,893, ranging anywhere between $40,000 and $84,000.  

Research Analyst Qualifications

Companies that employ research analysts sometimes require a master's degree in finance or a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation on top of several regulatory hurdles. Research analysts might be required to take the Series 86/87 exams if they are involved with a member organization.  

Other securities licenses are often required to include the  Series 7  general securities representative license and the Series 63  uniform securities agent license.   FINRA licenses are typically associated with the selling of specific securities as a firm’s registered representative. Investment analysts may also seek to obtain the chartered financial analyst (CFA) certification.  

Financial Analyst vs. Research Analyst

Financial firms in the United States do not really present a unified definition of either job. Some financial analysts are really just researchers who collect and organize market data, while others put together specific proposals for securities investments with large institutional clients. Similarly, some research analysts are glorified marketing specialists, while others apply socioeconomic or political insights and are probably better classified as management consultants.

It's possible to narrow the differences between research analysts and financial analysts. Generally speaking, financial analysts focus on analyzing investments and market performance. They rely on a  fundamental understanding of business valuation  and economic principles to create reports and make recommendations; they are the behind-the-scenes experts. Research analysts occupy a less prescriptive role than financial analysts.   • Experience with serving as a functional manager at Headquarters Air Force, Air Education and Training Command (AETC), or Major Command (MAJCOM) headquarters
  • BA or BS degree and 3+ years of experience with intelligence collections, analysis, and reporting
  • Previous deployment experience with US military, Department of State, or law enforcement
  • Ability to complete required personal weapons qualification prior to deployment
  • Graduate of the DIAC Advanced Counter Threat Finance Course

  • Experience with Task Force 2010, the Combined Joint Interagency Task Force-Afghanistan (CJIATF-A), Shafafiyat, or CJIATF-Nexus Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) or other counter corruption organization
  • Ability to show a minimum military rank acquired of E–6 or above
  • You will perform daily review of intelligence and other incoming reporting for lead development and follow-up and assists in the generation of Defense (MoD) corruption node requirements (HCRs, IIR evaluations, SDRs ) for collection or exploitation in support of counter-corruption mission
  • You will respond to requests for information from Target Coordination Forward personnel who will be embedded within major subordinate command locations in Afghanistan
  • You will maintain liaison with the Embassy, Resolute Support, Inter-governmental agencies, non-governmental agencies, and interagency elements
  • You will participate in coordination meetings to include targeting VTCs within theater and via CONUS, as required
  • You will develop and map all criminal patronage networks for coordination purposes
  • Ten years of analytical experience and a Master's degree or equivalent experience
  • BA/BS in Science or Engineering and 5 year of relevant experience or a Master’s degree and 3 years of experience
  • Experience with MS Office Applications, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • The ability to pass a background check to get a DoD Security Clearance
  • Update and create reference records as directed and to deliver to metrics as provided by the line manager
  • Provide a quality assurance service to the weapons Team by cross checking and correcting documents, reports and other products and to have these returned to the originator within 2 working days of receipt
  • Respond to CAT team changes to records within 5 working days
  • Ability to show proficiency with qualitative and quantitative analysis tools and processes is preferred
  • Experience with working as a minimum of E7 or CW2, 35F, 350F, or 18F, or other DoD service equivalent, including intelligence analyst for the USAF, USN, or USMC a plus
  • Experience with bomber operations, functional combat support, and Air Force preferred
  • Graduate of USAF Weapon School preferred
  • BS degree in Engineering, Business, or Science
  • Former rank of E7/CW2 and prior service as a 35F, 350F, 18F, or other DoD service equivalent duties and responsibilities, including intelligence analysts from the USAF, USN, or USMC
  • Requires in-depth knowledge of selected markets and industries analytical tools
  • 5+ years of experience with ACCM coordination or DRRS and Joint Training Information Management System (JTIMS) management as an industry or government professional or 3+ years of experience with specialized military work
  • Knowledge of USR, SORTS, and DRRS readiness processes
  • Experience as a field-grade or chief warrant officer
  • MA or MS degree in International Relations, Political Science, or related field
  • CFA charterholder, or progress toward such certification
  • Provide input to consultancy projects as directed by the line manager and support this with research as required
  • Provide technical support to Aerospace Defense & Security weapons team
  • Provide webinar and briefing input as required including research, creation and delivery
  • Write or have input to news stories on weapons related issues as required
  • Build relationships with manufacturers and users for research and information gathering
  • Attend defense shows, conferences and events, gather pertinent information, build relationships and contacts and as required write relevant news articles
