UAB medical cannabis researcher resigns from AMCC
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - A leading medical cannabis researcher at UAB is resigning his seat on the commission charged with making sure medical cannabis gets into the hands of patients.
Dr. Jerzy Szaflarski’s resignation from the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) will take effect Monday, April 15.
Szaflarski is the Director of UAB’s Epilepsy Center and has been on the AMCC since 2021, and has spoken extensively about the benefits of medical cannabis for some patients.
AMCC Spokesperson Brittany Peters says, “He stated that he is resigning from the Commission due to multiple time constraints imposed by his current position.”
His resignation comes as the Commission is now almost a year behind schedule in issuing the first set of licenses to get products to patients - a process they’ve tried and failed to do three times since last summer and are now tied up in court in multiple lawsuits alleging the commission didn’t follow the law.
A new bill that would increase the number of licenses the commission can give out and effectively end the legal battle could get a vote in committee this week.
