Show choir can seem — to any outsiders to the extracurricular — like a weird and cult-like activity.

Choir kids race down the hallways of school singing, the yellow jackets blind the school on days before competitions, and it’s not unusual for someone in show choir to break out in dance sporadically.

It can also be confusing, as despite its competitive form, as the scoring done at competitions is entirely objective, making each performance a bit more stress-inducing.

“I think that other people think show choir is easy, or that it isn’t as hard as other sports,” Kira Manuel, fr., a member of Chanteurs, said. “What people don’t realize is how much work show choir really is. It takes a lot of time and effort to get a show together, and being able to sing and dance takes a lot of stamina.”

How long exactly does it take to put a show together?

Kennedy’s show choirs each start with a choreography camp, where members learn the choreography to their shows. A show typically consists of four dance intensive songs, split by a vocally-challenging ballad. These four dance songs are fully choreographed by professional choreographers who are often hired and flown in from out-of-state to work with students.

While Chanteurs and Protégé (Kennedy’s prep division show choir) have their choreography camps split up throughout the school year (with the first camp typically taking place in the summer or late august), the varsity show choir members learns half of their show in a mere week, an endeavor known as ‘Damon Camp’ (named after the choreographer).

“Camp can be really stressful because not only are you doing crazy dancing and competing for the best spots, but you have to remember all of the choreography that you just learned, which can be a lot harder than it sounds,” Ferin Bergin, jr., said.

Beyond choreography camp, performers put in work on diction in vocals, cleaning choreography, and general practice of the show to commit it to nearly muscle memory.

“We spend around five to six hours a week, including practicing outside of practice. Around 150-200 hours a season (end of August to beginning of March), not including class during the day,” Alexis Weissenberger, sr., said.

The show involves more than just singing and dancing, though.

“There is a lot more that goes into a show then just the singing and dancing. Even though that is important you still have to think about the tech and combo. Without the tech you wouldn’t have any props, mics, stage extensions, and a lot more. Without the combo you wouldn’t have any live music,” Corey Caldbeck, sr., a member of the Happiness tech crew, said.

All of this work leads up to the large competitions that really signify the start of the season.

“At show choir competitions we are divided into different classes based on our age, and then judges judge us by score sheets that check our vocals, choreography, visuals, band, and everything else that makes our show. Then they add up those scores and place us,” Carson Uthe, so., member of Protege, said.

“The rush of the competitions and performances is my favorite part of show choir. Everything you worked for finally pays off and you get to play a completely different character,” Katie Beer, sr., member of Happiness, said.

“My favorite part of show choir is getting to meet new people, and getting to entertain the audience and spread happiness through our show,” Bergin said of the Happiness experiences. “I have met all of my best friends, and to be quite honest, pretty much all of my friends at show choir.”

“I love that show choir creates almost more of a team environment then other activities,” Uthe said. “No one is against each other, and no one ‘sits out on the bench’ at competitions. We all have to be doing our best to be successful.”

The Importance of Presentation In Choir

The Importance of Presentation In Choir

Presentation in a choral concert is an essential aspect of every performance – and there are several different kinds of presentation that inform a performance:

#1. Visual presentation:

The goal of choir is to present a multitude of varied sounds as one voice. Our objective then, could be hampered by an incongruous visual presentation. This is why we wear uniforms at concerts – when we look uniform, our visual presentation becomes unified, and helps us to present a unified sound. We also strive to stand still, or if we are using movement, we seek to have unified movement as well, helping us to present the best choral sound possible!

#2. Auditory presentation:

Our presentation of sound is obviously one of the most important aspects of a choral concert. We spend a great deal of time working on creating blended sound; focusing on our vowels, listening, and our harmonizing skills. More than that though, we work on the dynamics, tempo, and word-painting to present our best sound during a concert. The mood that we can create with our sound helps us to convey the essential aspects of music that audiences love!

#3. Storytelling:

Another essential aspect to a choral performance is storytelling. Music is about communicating, and since singers have the added layer of text to inform our performance, how we present our pieces to the audience is essential. Our choristers spend time in rehearsal discussing the meaning of pieces, as well as the history of the music, and the composer who wrote the music. All of this information, as well as our own interpretations of the music help us to convey the meaning of our music to the audience!

Vocal training.

Vocal training forms the foundation of any youth choir program. Through vocal exercises and techniques, young singers learn to harness the power of their voices and develop proper breath control, pitch accuracy, and vocal projection. With each training session, they become more confident and proficient in their singing abilities, allowing them to deliver captivating performances that touch the hearts of listeners.

Ensemble Singing

Ensemble singing is an integral part of the youth choir program, enabling young church members to experience the joy and harmony of singing together as a unified group. Through the collaboration and coordination required in ensemble singing, choir members learn important musical skills such as blending their voices, following musical cues, and creating dynamic and expressive performances that resonate with both the congregation and the individuals they serve.

Performances during Church Services and Events

Participating in church services and events is an essential aspect of a youth choir program. By performing in front of the congregation, young singers gain confidence in expressing their faith through music while offering a source of inspiration and encouragement to others. Whether it be leading worship during regular services, special holiday performances, or community outreach events, these performances provide a platform for young church members to share their talents and connect with their faith on a deeper level.

Community Outreach Projects

Engaging in community outreach projects is a way for youth choirs to extend their talents beyond the walls of the church and make a positive impact on the lives of others. From visiting nursing homes to performing at local charity events, these projects enable young church members to use their musical gifts to bring joy, comfort, and hope to those in need. Through these experiences, choir members develop empathy, compassion, and a sense of service, creating a lasting connection between music, faith, and social responsibility.

Participation in Choir Festivals and Competitions

Participating in choir festivals and competitions provides young church members with opportunities to showcase their skills, receive feedback from experts in the field, and develop a greater appreciation for the art of choral music. These events foster a spirit of healthy competition, motivating choir members to strive for excellence while nurturing their sense of teamwork, discipline, and commitment. Additionally, they offer a platform for youth choirs to network and learn from other talented young musicians, creating lasting friendships and inspiring collaborations.

Overall, a well-designed youth choir program combines vocal training, ensemble singing, performances, community outreach, and participation in festivals and competitions to create a comprehensive musical and spiritual journey for young church members. By immersing themselves in these activities, they not only develop their musical talents but also form deep connections with their faith, fellow choir members, and the larger church community.

Youth Choir Program Elements

The Role of the Youth Choir Director

In the vibrant world of church youth music ministry , the role of the youth choir director is paramount. A skilled and passionate director serves as a guiding light, inspiring young church members on their musical and spiritual journey. They are not only responsible for selecting repertoire, teaching vocal techniques, and conducting rehearsals, but they also serve as mentors and role models.

The youth choir director plays a pivotal role in creating a positive and supportive environment for growth and development. They understand the unique needs and challenges of young singers and strive to empower them to unlock their full potential. Through their leadership, directors foster a sense of unity and camaraderie among choir members, shaping them into a tight-knit musical family.

To ensure a successful youth choir, directors carefully curate a repertoire that resonates with the spiritual and musical aspirations of the choir members. They select songs that exude passion, evoke emotion, and celebrate faith. Through thoughtful song selection, directors create meaningful moments of worship and connection, allowing young singers to experience the transformative power of music in their spiritual journey.

The youth choir director’s role extends beyond the rehearsal room. They coordinate performances, both within the church and in the wider community, showcasing the talent and dedication of the choir. These performances serve as opportunities for youth singers to share their faith through music, uplifting and inspiring audiences with their heartfelt performances.

“The role of the youth choir director is not just about conducting rehearsals and performances, but about instilling a lifelong love for music and worship in the hearts of young singers.”

In the hands of a talented director, a youth choir becomes more than just a group of singers. It becomes a community within the larger church community—a place where young individuals can find solace, friendship, and spiritual growth. The youth choir director plays an instrumental role in cultivating a safe and nurturing space for young church members to explore their musical talents, express their faith, and forge lifelong connections.

The Impact of the Youth Choir Director

The youth choir director’s expertise extends beyond music. They provide guidance, mentorship, and support to young singers, influencing not only their musical abilities but also their personal growth. Through their presence and leadership, directors instill confidence and self-belief in the choir members, empowering them to become strong vocalists and individuals.

A skilled director knows the importance of tailoring their teaching to the specific needs and abilities of each youth choir member. They employ effective vocal techniques, musical instruction, and rehearsal strategies to encourage growth and improvement. By fostering a nurturing environment, directors create a safe space where young singers can take risks, explore their vocal range, and discover the power of their own voices.

The youth choir director acts as an unwavering source of inspiration, fueling the passion and dedication of their singers. Their infectious enthusiasm and love for music ignite a spark in the hearts of young church members, fostering a deep appreciation for the transformative power of music in worship and spiritual expression.

Ultimately, the role of the youth choir director goes far beyond the music. They shape the lives of young singers, imprinting upon them lifelong values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Through their tireless dedication and genuine care, directors create an environment where young individuals can thrive, not only as musicians but also as confident, compassionate, and faithful individuals.

The role of the youth choir director is both an honor and a responsibility. With their passion, expertise, and unwavering dedication, they shape the lives of young church members, leaving an indelible mark on their musical and spiritual journey.

Auditions for Church Youth Choirs

In order to ensure the admission of talented singers with diverse musical backgrounds, church youth choirs often require auditions.

Auditions serve as an opportunity for youth choir directors to assess the individual strengths and areas for improvement of potential members. By evaluating their vocal abilities and musical aptitude, directors can make informed decisions about the placement of choir members.

During auditions, participants are usually asked to perform a prepared piece, showcasing their vocal range, technique, and musicality. The director may also assess sight-reading skills and the ability to blend with other voices. This comprehensive evaluation process helps to build a balanced and harmonious choir that can deliver exceptional performances.

Establishing a regular rehearsal schedule is equally essential for the success of the youth choir. Rehearsals provide members with the opportunity to learn and refine their repertoire, develop vocal technique, and work on blending as a group. A structured rehearsal schedule allows for consistent progress, ensuring that the choir is well-prepared for performances and able to showcase their musical abilities with confidence.

“Auditions play a crucial role in creating a talented and cohesive youth choir. By carefully selecting members based on their abilities and potential, we can create a choir that is capable of creating incredible music together.” – Choir Director, Emily Johnson

Consistent rehearsal schedules also help build a sense of discipline and commitment among choir members. By regularly coming together to practice and refine their skills, youth choir members develop a strong work ethic, teamwork, and dedication to their craft.

By combining auditions to select the most skilled singers and establishing a regular rehearsal schedule, church youth choirs can create an environment where young musicians can thrive and develop their talents in service to their faith and community.

The Impact of Music Ministry on Youth

Music transcends words, allowing messages of hope, joy, and love to resonate deeply within their hearts. It becomes a conduit for divine communication, bringing them closer to God and reinforcing their faith.

Forming a Deeper Connection

The choir becomes a place of belonging, where young people can find solace, encouragement, and a sense of family.

These connections often extend into adulthood, as many individuals who were part of a church youth choir continue to participate in music ministry throughout their lives. Henry Leck : Creating Artistry Through Movement in the Choral Setting

Dalcroze Eurhythmics is a unique approach to the study of music. Based on rhythm as the primary factor that bridges what we hear with what we do, Eurhythmics can be used in the choral setting to develop rhythmic independence in the singers, inner hearing, and the nuances in music. Through Dalcroze Eurhrythmics, singers can enjoy the benefits of purposeful expressive movement to enhance choral rehearsals and performances. This 1-hour DVD provides detailed approaches to the use of Eurhythmics within the classroom or rehearsal setting and offers a guide to building choral artistry through movement.

Henry Leck and Randy Stetson : Creating Artistry Through Movement in the Choral Setting for Male Voices

Featuring the acclaimed St. Mary's International School Varsity Ensemble, conducted by Randy Stenson, the DVD includes warm-ups and exercises to improve tone, intonation, phrasing, articulation, special vocal effects, head voice and vocal agility. Through these exercises, the singer develops his own individualized shaping gesture, which leads to improved musicality during rehearsal, versatility and expressiveness. James Jordan's The Ensemble Movement Warm-Up explores how to organize and sequence movement activities in a choral setting to increase artistry and help raise the performance level of any ensemble, regardless of age. Building on the ideas of Rudolf von Laban and Edwin E. Gordon's Music Learning Theory, James Jordan creates an exciting new rhythm/movement pedagogy. Introduces simple movements-stepping and clapping-to help the ensemble explore kinesthetic feeling connected to harmonic rhythm, not meter. Teaches fundamental principles of artistic phrasing. Revolutionizes ensemble teaching to focus on how sound moves forward, and not on rhythm notation. Teaches the important distinction between rhythm and tempo, and harmonic rhythm. Builds legato and sense of line. Introduces the new concept of "projection" to teach and conceptualize phrase shape. The Ensemble Movement Warm-Up is the culmination of 40 years of experimentation, thought, and study using the wealth of ideas provided by Laban and is a major contribution to the choral art.

Rodney Eichenberger : Enhancing Musicality through Movement

Rodney Eichenberger skillfully demonstrates the effectiveness of employing singer movement to sensitize the ensemble to more subtle musicality. Working with 14 choirs representing church, school, community, and college, in unrehearsed, spontaneous demonstrations, singers are given some ownership in the rehearsal process as they internalize musical concepts kinetically, aurally, and visually. The video demonstrates how these techniques can be incorporated into more effective conducting gesture in rehearsal and in concert. How to Mic a Choir

In this issue of Shure Notes, we'll focus on microphone placement and teach you how to get the best possible sound for your choral ensemble.

One of the most challenging tasks for a house of worship audio technician is miking the choir. The right solution requires achieving:

  • a good balance of all the voices,
  • high gain before feedback, and of course,
  • a natural sound

There are two basic decisions to be made that will help you get the best sound for your choir:

  • microphone selection, and
  • microphone placement

In this issue of Shure Notes, we'll focus on choir placement and teach you how to get the best possible sound for your choral ensemble.

How many choir microphones, and where should they go?

Once you've made the decision on which choir mics to use, you need to consider how many you need and where to place them. Here are some tips:

The simple answer is: as few as possible. Fewer microphones mean less feedback and an easier job of adjusting for the best sound. A decent cardioid choir mic, correctly placed, will cover 15-20 singers, arranged in a rectangular or wedge-shaped section about 10 ft. wide and 3 rows deep. A choir of 30-45 voices should require no more than two or three mics.

Choir microphone positions for choir

No hard and fast rule here. Some professionals recommend a vertical height as tall as the tallest singer in the back row. Others suggest that height, plus another 2-3 feet. Raising the mics makes all the singers equidistant and prevents the front row singers from overwhelming the back row

2-3 feet in front of the first row should give you a balanced sound. For larger or unusually shaped choirs that require multiple microphones, try to observe the 3:1 Rule:

choir microphone-3:1 Rule Diagram

For multiple choir microphones, the distance between microphones should be approximately three times the distance between individual mics and the sound source.

For instance:

If a choir microphone is one foot in front of the front row of your choir, the next nearest microphone should be placed about three feet apart.

Here's why:

You want to avoid the hollow sound that results from phase cancellation or the comb filter effect. This can happen when too-close mics pick up two vocal signals in the mix - one direct and one delayed. Certain frequencies cancel out, creating a frequency response that looks like an inverted comb - hence the name. And unless you're looking for that kind of a filtered sound, it's something you'll want to avoid.

choir microphone-frequency and relative level chart

Seven simple rules:

  • Place the choir microphones properly.
  • Use the minimum number of microphones.
  • Turn down unused mics.
  • Let the choir naturally mix itself.
  • Don't over-amplify the choir
  • Try not to sing at the mic.
  • Sing in a natural voice.

Dr Sarah Benn leaving the medical tribunal service in Manchester.

Retired UK GP suspended for five months after climate protests

Sarah Benn is first of three GPs facing disciplinary tribunals this year over climate activism

A doctor who went to jail after a series of climate protests has been taken off the medical register for five months – and still faces being permanently struck off.

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) – the disciplinary arm of the General Medical Council (GMC) – suspended Dr Sarah Benn on Tuesday, having found last week that her fitness to practise as a doctor had been impaired by reason of misconduct.

Benn was the first of three GPs who could face being struck off for climate activism at disciplinary tribunals this year. She was referred to the MPTS after being found guilty of contempt of court for breaching a civil injunction at Kingsbury oil terminal as part of a Just Stop Oil campaign. This action led to her spending 32 days in prison.

In its decision, the tribunal noted that Benn’s actions did not give rise to concerns about patient safety, and there was evidence that she was an experienced doctor.

But it said there had been “no acknowledgement from Dr Benn that what she has done by breaking the law was wrong and no evidence that she has taken steps to remediate her actions”. And it found there was a “strong likelihood of repetition”, after Benn explicitly said she would continue with her actions.

Her case will be reviewed shortly before the suspension lapses. “They’ve given me essentially five months to offer apologies and regret and an undertaking to not do it again,” Benn told the Guardian. “But I’ve made my position very clear and really nothing is going to be any different in five months’ time.”

“They’ve just kicked the can down the road,” she said.

In its presentation to the tribunal last week, the GMC argued that Benn’s actions risked undermining the public’s trust in and respect for the medical profession. The lawyer Faye Rolfe, representing the organisation, said doctors submitted themselves to the rule of law and should uphold an even higher standard than ordinary citizens.

Benn contested this, telling the tribunal there was no evidence that she had caused patients to lose trust in her as a doctor or the wider public to lose trust in the profession. “It’s complex but we could credit the public with some common sense and integrity, and a desire to find the truth,” she said.

As part of her evidence, Benn submitted a statement by the UN special rapporteur on environmental defenders, Michel Forst, who earlier this year condemned the UK’s crackdown on environmental protest.

Forst said in his statement that developments over the past few months, including the professional tribunals of medical doctors, suggested the situation was deteriorating. “It is important for me to stress that professional sanctions can definitely be considered as a form of penalisation, persecution or harassment,” he said.

Benn, who is now retired, told the tribunal that as a doctor she had a “moral duty to take action”.

“The climate emergency is a health emergency; not a potential future one, but here and now. If I know all this and I choose to stay quiet, I am failing in my obligations. I am breaching the guidance in good medical practice to make my patients’ health my first concern.”

The tribunal acknowledged Benn’s sincere beliefs and said it respected her right to express them. It also said there was a broad spectrum of views among the general public about climate change, and the pace of action needed, and that there would likely be “considerable sympathy” for her concerns.

But it concluded that the “overwhelming majority of the public would not condone breaking the law in the repeated way in which Dr Benn did, especially given the impact, on the final occasion, to the wider public resources involved”.

Benn has received support from medical practitioners and doctors’ organisations. Dr Emma Runswick, the deputy chair of the British Medical Association council, said there was “no possible public or patient interest” in these kinds of proceedings, while the Doctors’ Association UK said it strongly believed that peaceful protest should not be viewed as condemnable professional misconduct “but as commendable public health advocacy”.

During the tribunal, Benn noted that the GMC had recently apologised to gay doctors struck off the medical register because of their sexuality. “In years to come, when events unfold and tipping points tip, and systems unravel, my prediction is that the reputation of those who tried their best to protect patients, the public, and future generations will be enhanced, not reduced,” she said.
