IMB Global Challenges Scholarship

The Global Challenges PhD Scholarship offers a per annum top up to the UQ Graduate School Scholarship plus $5,000 support for a placement on top of the $2,000 Student Development fund (over the period of the candidature) to outstanding domestic and eligible international onshore applicants .

The PhD projects on offer will give each student the opportunity to take a deep dive into a specialised topic and research discipline in one laboratory and within our broad-ranging approach. Each project will provide the rich foundational research training gained by completing a PhD and an opportunity to make a unique contribution to the field of knowledge. By conducting these projects within a cohort of other students, also aiming to broadly address the identified themes, the collective will form an intellectual hub, together, solving these global challenges.

Importantly, the scholarship includes specialised training in each theme and cutting-edge research techniques, tailored transferable skills training and support to conduct a placement nationally or internationally with a related partner. Collectively, these will form four pillars of support for the research project and create job-ready graduates with links to the national and international research, entrepreneurial and industry community. This year's theme is 'Drugs inspired by nature' .

To qualify for a Global Challenges Scholarship, you must

  • Apply for a participating  PhD Projec t   (marked with an asterisk).
  • Submit your PhD application before the deadline (check back for 2024 deadline)

In your application, ensure you:

  • Select ‘My higher degree is not collaborative’
  • Select 'I am applying for, or have been awarded a scholarship or sponsorship'.
  • Select ‘Other’, then add ‘ IMB Global Challenges + identified theme’

Please note, there are conditions for undertaking this scholarship. Refer to details below.

Funding accelerates R&D and supports workforce development in essential STEM fields

WASHINGTON, D.C. —  The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced more than $19.1 million to support nuclear energy research and development, university nuclear infrastructure, and undergraduate and graduate education. Projects will help expand access to nuclear energy, moving the nation closer to meeting the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

"U.S. universities and colleges are critical incubators of groundbreaking ideas that can move us toward a clean energy future,” said Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Dr. Kathryn Huff . "These awards invest in the next generation of nuclear scientists and engineers who will continue to advance nuclear energy as a solution to tackling the climate crisis."

Since 2009, DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy has awarded almost $1 billion to advance nuclear energy research and support the education and training of future nuclear energy visionaries and leaders. Awards being announced today include:

Distinguished Early Career Program ($2.5 million) - Invests in the innovative research and education programs of four outstanding early career university faculty poised to pave new lines of inquiry and advance mission critical research directions in nuclear energy.

University Nuclear Leadership Program ($6.6 million) - Provides scholarships and graduate fellowships to students pursuing nuclear engineering and other degree programs relevant to nuclear energy. The awards include 93 scholarships and 34 fellowships for students at 42 U.S. trade schools, colleges and universities.

The Innovations in Nuclear Energy Research Development Student Competition ($34,500) - Recognizes 11 graduate and undergraduate students for their innovative nuclear energy research publications.

Consolidated Innovative Nuclear Research (CINR) Phase II Research and Development ($4.7 Million) - Six awards enable established teams to extend and build upon previously funded nuclear energy research and development projects.

Scientific Infrastructure Support for CINR ($5.2 Million) - 18 awards will assist universities with acquiring the best resources and equipment available to educate the next generation of nuclear energy leaders.

To learn more about these awards, visit the Nuclear Energy University Program website. CINR R&D awards will be announced later this spring.

What you'll receive.

A stipend annually to support living costs for up to 3.5 years. From 1 January 2024, the annual stipend rate is $32,192 (AUD). This is the full-time, tax-exempt rate which will index annually.

Domestic students receive a Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset funded by the Australian Government.

If you're an international student, you will also receive a tuition fee sponsorship for your research degree.

As the scholarship recipient, you will have the opportunity to work with a team of leading researchers, to undertake your own innovative research in and across the field.

Eligibility

You need to meet the entry requirements for a QUT Doctor of Philosophy , including any English language requirements.

In addition, you must have:

  • power system dynamic simulation and analysis
  • grid integration of renewable energy sources
  • power converter/inverter for renewable energy sources
  • AI applications in engineering areas.
  • additional background or experience in machine learning, data analytics, and other computer science areas would be an advantage
  • experience in power system simulation software, such as PSS/E, PSCAD, DIgSILENT, and PowerWorld, would be viewed as advantageous
  • proficiency in programming languages such as MATLAB and Python
  • a demonstrated publication record (or potential) in peer-reviewed conferences or journals would be viewed as advantageous
  • ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and priorities effectively, and strong attention to detail
  • well-developed written and oral communication skills for presenting research findings and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.

How to apply

Apply for this scholarship at the same time you apply for admission to a QUT Doctor of Philosophy .

The first step is to email Dr Yuchen Zhang detailing your academic and research background, your motivation to research in this field and interest in this scholarship, and include your CV.

If supported to apply, you will then submit an expression of interest (EOI) following the advice at how to apply for a research degree .

In your EOI, nominate Dr Yuchen Zhang as your proposed principal supervisor, and copy the link to this scholarship website into question 2 of the financial details section.

About the scholarship

The PhD project aims to investigate and evolve the power system stability and strength assessment framework to suit weak electricity grids with substantial renewable sources. It expects to develop a digitalized approach where comprehensive metric indices are estimated by an innovative data-driven system to realize real-time wide-area power system stability and strength assessment under weak grid conditions. Advanced methods will also be developed to bridge the gap between data science and energy system applications. The new suite of next-gen metrics and data-driven techniques will offer the world’s most innovative renewable energy products with desired grid support capability and low system strength operability, that would smooth the transition towards low-carbon electricity future.

The candidate will be supervised by Dr Yuchen Zhang who is an ARC DECRA Fellow with internationally recognized research in interdisciplinary areas across power engineering and AI.
