Assistant Professor Mohammadkazem Taram

Assistant Professor Mohammadkazem Taram

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Mohammadkazem Taram at Purdue University, Department of Computer Science for winning the 2023 ACM SIGMICRO Dissertation Award.

Assistant Professor Kazem Taram accepted the award at the 56th IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Microarchitecture. The title of Taram's dissertation is "Defusing the tension between security and performance with secure microarchitectures."  The SIGMICRO Outstanding Dissertation Award recognizes excellent thesis research by doctoral candidates in the field of computer microarchitecture. Dissertations are reviewed for technical depth and significance of the research contribution, potential impact, and quality of presentation. Taram is the inaugural winner of the dissertation award.

Dissertation

Defusing the tension between security and performance with secure microarchitectures

Abstract The pursuit of secure computation has always featured a tension between performance  and security. Security mitigations often come with a high performance cost  that can be manifested in serious environmental and economic impacts if they are  employed, and in disastrous security and privacy breaches, if not. In the context of  processor architectures, the security-performance tension is only growing as new attacks  appear, each exploiting a crucial performance optimization, threatening to unwind  decades of architectural gains. These hosts of attacks on microarchitectural optimizations  painfully coincide with an era in which those performance optimizations are needed most – an era when Moore’s law is fading and Denard’s scaling is gone.In this dissertation we strive to defuse this security-performance tension by deepening our understanding of vulnerabilities in modern processors, providing efficient hardware support to enable security, and designing new high-performance securearchitectures. We first show how performance optimizations can have devastating security implications by introducing a novel microarchitectural side-channel attack that targets Data Direct IO, a network packet processing optimization implemented by Intel (Chapter1). Then, we propose Context-Sensitive Decoding (CSD), a framework that takes advantage of the instruction-to-micro-op translation that exists in most modern processors to provide security features (Chapter2). Finally, we propose novel secure and fast architectures to mitigate vulnerabilities in two of the most crucial performance optimizations in modern processors: Speculative Execution (Chapter3)and Simultaneous Multithreading (Chapter4).

American country music duo Sugarland is returning to the CMT Music Awards show stage for the first time in more than a decade.

Sugarland, founded in Atlanta in 2002 by singer-songwriters Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush, will perform at the CMT Music Awards at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, this Sunday, April 7. The duo’s upcoming act will mark its first performance at country music’s most popular awards show since 2011. It will also mark Nettles’ and Bush’s first public performance together since reuniting in 2018 for Sugarland’s “Bigger” album and Still The Same tour, according to CMT .

Sugarland, which has previously won four CMT Music Awards, will perform alongside Little Big Town at Saturday’s awards show. The dual act between Sugarland and Little Big Town will mark the first time the two bands have performed together since the CMT Music Awards in 2009, when they shared the stage with Jake Owen for a rendition of “Life in a Northern Town.”

“Sharing the stage with some of our longtime friends next weekend at the #CMTAwards,” Sugarland said in a tweet Friday. “It’s going to be a special night. Tune in April 7 on CBS.”

The 2024 CMT Music Awards are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Eastern Sunday on CBS.

Top artists rave about Beyoncé's 'Cowboy Carter' at iHeartRadio Awards

acm thesis award

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter doesn't just have the internet buzzing about her new album "Act II: Cowboy Carter," celebrities on the yellow carpet of the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards also raved about her new country music.

"Just when you think she can't go to the next level, she goes there," said Doechii, who was nominated for three awards. "I think it's amazing, and I want to see more Black cowgirls and cowboys out there."

She was "blown away" by "Cowboy Carter" and appreciates how Beyoncé has crossed over into different genres throughout her career.

The superstar herself attended the awards show at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles to receive one of the night's top honors , the Innovator Award, just days after her the album came out on Friday .

Country artist Lainey Wilson, who was nominated twice, said she was "jamming" to "II Most Wanted" featuring Miley Cyrus.

"I'm excited to see the fans that didn't know they liked country music find out that maybe they like it a little bit," Wilson said. "I'm all about seeing country music grow right now."

Blanco Brown, a Black country music artist, said he hadn't had a chance to listen to "Cowboy Carter" yet but he liked the single "Texas Hold 'Em." He hopes more Black artists will find success in the genre going forward.

"I just want to get to a point where it don't feel like we have room for one or two, and it's just music, it speaks for itself," Brown said. "I'm going to keep creating. That's my purpose.

The Black Music Action Coalition released a report in 2022 called "Three Chords & the Actual Truth" about the history of systemic racism in the country music industry. The group's co-founder Willie "Prophet" Stiggers said this was the first Beyoncé album he had listened to from beginning to end and it was "phenomenal."

"What Beyoncé has done I think is remarkable, not only what she has done for herself but the fact that there are six new Black artists streaming on Spotify," Stiggers said. "It's an indication of the audience and the appetite that black people have for country music."

The groundbreaking country music project took over social media and became Spotify's most-streamed album in single day in 2024.

The Innovator Award is given to one artist who continuously contributes to pop culture and the music industry, according to iHeartRadio.

"Few artists in the course of history have taken creative risks, successfully transformed their music and influenced pop culture on the level that Beyoncé has," an iHeartRadio news release stated. "Throughout the years, the global cultural icon has created music that has topped the charts across multiple formats , while also architecting groundbreaking tours, including last year’s RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR — the highest-grossing tour in history for both an R&B artist and a Black female artist."

The award show was hosted by Ludacris and aired on Fox as well as iHeartMedia radio stations worldwide and the iHeartRadio app.

Beyoncé wins innovation award, thanks Black musicians ‘who defied any label'

The singer thanked black artists “who defied any label placed upon them” during iheartradio music awards speech., by liz calvario | today • published april 2, 2024 • updated on april 2, 2024 at 8:11 am.

Beyoncé was a showstopper at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards.

The singer, fresh off the release of her latest new album,  “Cowboy Carter,”  made an appearance at the awards show at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 1.

The “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer was honored with the Innovator Award during the ceremony. She was also up for R&B song of the year for “Cuff It” and R&B artist of the year, among others.

Before she took the stage, Stevie Wonder spoke wonders of “the  most awarded person in Grammy history ,” before touching on her past accolades, chart-topping albums, goodwill and history-making moments.

“Now, Beyoncé is once again changing music and culture,” Wonder said about her latest record, in part. “And when she’s not changing music, she’s changing the world, fighting the good fight.”

In an outfit fit for a country queen, Beyoncé donned an all-black, Western-inspired ensemble. The “Ya Ya” singer wore black leather jumpsuit with gold detailing. She accessorized with a matching black hat with gold hardware.

Beyoncé thanked Wonder for “making a way for all of us” and said she was honored to receive this recognition from him. She also mentioned that he played the harmonica on  her recent version of Dolly Parton’s iconic song, “Jolene.”

In the wake of bitcoin's new highs, South Korea's ‘kimchi premium' is in the spotlight again

“Tonight, you called me an innovator and for that, I’m very grateful,” Beyoncé began. “Innovation starts with a dream. But then you have to execute that dream and that role can be very bumpy. Being an innovator is saying what everyone believes is impossible. Being an innovator often means being criticized, which often will test your mental strength. Being an innovator is leaning on faith, trusting that God will catch you and guide you.”

She went on to say she hopes that labels, radio stations and award shows would be “more open to the joy and liberation that comes from enjoying art with no preconceived notions.” Beyoncé then dedicated the award to all the innovators who have dedicated their lives “and their art to creating shifts.”

She concluded by naming a few Black artists like Rosetta Tharpe,  Linda Martell , Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Wonder and many more “who defied any label placed upon them.”

“Thank you for executing your dream so we could all follow,” she continued, thanking her team,  husband Jay-Z  and her  “three beautiful children” who inspire her.

Beyoncé has had the internet talking after dropping her “ Cowboy Carter ” album following the release of her highly successful album “ Renaissance ” in 2022.

“This ain’t a Country album,” the artists previously expressed. “This is a “Beyoncé” album. This is act ii COWBOY CARTER, and I am proud to share it with y’all!”

When released, “Cowboy Carter” included  guest appearances  by Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton,  Martell , Miley Cyrus and more. Beyoncé pays tribute to many past Black artists who influenced country music, as well  as the Chitlin’ Circuit .

An innovator indeed, when she released “Texas Hold ‘Em,” she became the first Black female artist to top the Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. And on “Cowboy Carter” release day, March 28, the record became Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day in 2024 so far.

Beyonce Slams ‘Award Shows, Record Labels and Radio’ After ‘Preconceived’ Cowboy Carter Backlash

Beyoncé has called out “all the record labels, every radio station, every awards show” after facing backlash for her new country album, Cowboy Carter .

The 42-year-old’s foray into country music had been met with resistance from some country music fans and country music radio stations who ignored fan requests to play the songs on air.

Dukes of Hazzard actor John Schneider was also accused of racism when he compared the “Crazy in Love” singer’s ambitions to step into the new genre to a dog marking its territory, during an interview with conservative network One America News.

Black artists joining the country music scene has long been a controversial issue despite rhythm & blues, created by Black musicians, having inspired the genre.

But on Monday, April 1, Beyoncé hit back at the criticism by telling the audience at the iHeartRadio Music Awards that the music industry needs to become “more open to the joy and liberation that comes from enjoying art with no preconceived notions.”

The singer-songwriter, who last month became the first Black woman to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country chart with her catchy track “Texas Hold ‘Em,” appeared on-stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the show hosted by Ludacris , where she received the Innovator Award from soul legend Stevie Wonder .

Wearing a black leather suit with a matching cowboy hat, she thanked the 25-time Grammy winner for playing the harmonica on her version of Dolly Parton ’s 1973 hit “Jolene,” which features on Cowboy Carter .

“Whenever anyone asks me if there’s anyone that I could listen to for the rest of my life, it’s always you,” she told him, before dedicating her award to those who have “dedicated their lives and their art to creating shifts.”

She mentioned Sister Rosetta Tharpe , Tracy Chapman , Linda Martell , Prince , André 3000 , Tina Turner and Michael Jackson .

“[They] defied any label placed upon them, thank you for executing your dream so we could all follow,” she said.

Beyonce also thanked her husband, Jay-Z , describing him as “my rock, my best friend, I love you” and her “three beautiful children who continue to be my inspiration, my biggest blessing.”

The mother of three has also given Black women in the music industry — like Mickey Guyton, K. Michelle  and Tyla — their flowers.

“With opportunity comes possibility. The possibilities are endless with you @Beyonce,” Guyton, 40, wrote via X on Friday, March 29, alongside photos of a bouquet of white flowers and a note from Bey herself.

“Thank you for opening doors for me, queen. Keep shining,” the note read, signed with “love and respect” from Beyoncé.

In 2020, Guyton became the first Black female artist to be nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards for her song “Black Like Me.” That same year, she was the first Black female artist to perform at the Academy of Country Music Awards.

The gifts didn’t stop there, as musician K. Michelle also shared photos of her white flower bouquet via Instagram on Friday as well, with a similar note of support from the “16 Carriages” singer. “I love what you’ve been doing and I know it’s not easy to enter a new space,” Beyoncé wrote to Michelle, 42. “Sending you positivity and respect. I hope to meet you one day.”

Beyoncé released Cowboy Carter on Friday. Her album features 27 tracks with features from Miley Cyrus, Post Malone, Dolly Parton, Linda Martell and Willie Nelson . Along with original tracks, she covered Parton’s “Jolene” and the Beatles’ “Blackbird.”

She kicked off her cowgirl era by dropping “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages” following her Verizon commercial during Super Bowl LVIII. In the ad, Tony Hale challenged her to break the internet. After failing multiple times, Beyoncé said, “OK, they ready, drop the new music.”

Though Cowboy Carter is her first country album, it is the second installment of a three-part project following the release of Renaissance in 2022.
