Ancient Greece Free Activities and Projects for Kids and Teachers

These are free to use original activity and project ideas for kids and teachers for your unit study of ancient greece for 6th grade. they can be adjusted for any grade..

Greek Olympics: Ancient Greek Olympics for the Classroom 3-4 days mini-unit with student role handouts and games .  This is a great group activity, and really helps the kids understand the concept of city-states and the fierce competition that existed in ancient Greece between them. I usually use this early in the unit because it's so much fun, and so very Greek.

Greek Geography Activity: Working in small groups, be real estate agents. Sell your site. Use real location names. If its a sea, name it. Give reasons why anyone should settle down in such a mountainous area. Remind students that the Greeks were independent. Their culture developed from villages that grew into unique and independent city-states . Have groups create a "For Sale" brochure or sign.

The Greek Dark Ages: Minoans, Mycenaeans, Dorians, & the Greek Dark Ages - group activity

The Greek Gods:

A Slightly Different Approach to the Greek Gods Family Tree - I used felt. Felt sticks to felt and it's colorful. I created the tree, a green tree with two tiers of branches and a brown tree trunk and secured that to a wall in my classroom. To one side, I had rectangles with Greek gods names , but they were not on the tree or in any particular order. You can post them up any old way, or stash them a box. This was ready to use before the kids came to class. Then I used the myths . From the myths, as a class, we could figure out from clues in the myth who was who in the ancient Greek world, including Hera and Zeus. Down at the bottom of the tree, on the trunk, I placed the demi-gods - half mortals, and the monsters. It worked very well. The kids filled the tree quite rapidly. They also ran into deities that I had not prepared. They prepared them and added them to our very cluttered tree. Somewhere in there, I remind the kids now that: "The Greeks had over 2,000 gods. I don't think we're going to get them all up on our wall. But we can certainly get up a few." If you have multiple classes as I did, leave your tree up with gods posted, and have the kids check if the other classes were correct. Mix up the myths - different myths for different classes. That way, every class has a chance to add to the family tree. I left the tree up during our entire ancient Greek unit.

Working in Small Groups, write your own myth:  Years ago, someone told me, when I was a new teacher, fictional writing needs to be a small group activity. And she was so right. One of my students did the least amount of work with the most amount of disinterest until one day, in his small group, he was chosen to be the narrator of the myth they created. It was his only participation and he was incredible. He was all the characters. His voice changed for each. His body adjusted for each. At the end of his presentation of the group's very short original myth, instead of clapping, there was dead silence. Thank goodness for one little girl who said - that was incredible! Then everybody clapped. From then on, he came alive. Word spread. People were talking about him for days much to his embarrassment and delight.

NEW: Case Files of the Hercules Detective Agency (short stories about ancient Greece)   Join Herc and his buddies as they solve the many problems facing the ancient Greek people, just by reading a short story! Meet some monsters! Visit the Olympics! Find out how kids got an education. How did men get their hair cut? How did people meet each other to get married? Who were the Oracles? What were the gods really like and how did they get along? What was the stone zoo?  What happened to the missing olive trees? How did Hercules and the Minotaur become best friends? These questions and many more are answered by Hercules and his many friends though the Case Files of the Hercules Detective Agency.  Ways we use these stories : Homework: Assign a story as homework, and next class day, start class with a quick brainstorming session - what did this story tell you about ancient Greece? Small group activity: Each group with a different story to recap, illustrate, and present.  Or, working in small groups, have them write a case file of their own that shares something about daily life, inventions, religion, or geography in ancient Greece. We selected Hercules, spelled the Roman way, as the central character.

Business Cards: Tell the kids the gods are really getting upset. People are coming to the temples asking them to do everything. They don't do everything. They have jobs. People need a reminder of what jobs each god can do. In frustration, the gods have come to you to fix this. You need to create for them some business cards that they can use to advertise what they do best. (Example: Apollo, Want a sun tan? See Apollo. Or Hera: Wedding Consultant. Aphrodite: Love Advice for the Lonely. Work in groups. If you have multiple classes, work in large groups. Give each class different gods. That way, when they are all posted on the wall, the kids in each class can enjoy them. Assign groups the gods they will be helping. Give them some time. Have each class them share their business cards ideas with the class. Collect the card so can make a montage of all the cards from all classes on your wall.

Greek Gods activity: Zeus is retiring - Apply for his job.

Ancient Greek Daily Life Activities:

Daily Life Activity: This is an interesting approach for a small group daily life activity: interesting lesson idea . Tell your students: Imagine you are a famous architect and you have just discovered the ruins of an ancient Greek home. Go through each room, carefully piecing together the clues. Each group in your class is assigned a room. The group creates clues (pieces of the past) for that room and its purpose in ancient Greece. Then, each group's room becomes an exploration station. Set up your stations around your classroom and allow students to explore each station and create a list of "discoveries" that tell us about daily life in ancient Greece. Then open class discussion. Although this is fictional writing, it is also technical writing as the assignment requires the discovery of artifacts and clues. We teach multiple classes. Some of our groups during this two-day activity chose to add to existing rooms. Some created nearby businesses. Some created neighbors. I had two groups, actually, who challenged the findings of two different discovery stations. One group was clearly, based on their presentation, seeking a grant to correct misinformation. Very fun. Our two-day activity became a four day one and I left the discovery stations up for about 10 days.

Daily Life Activity : Trading Market Simulation , barter in ancient Greece. Optional use: Students can create products that would be needed in ancient Greek daily life to barter. This can be as simple as a word on a piece of paper or a quick drawing.

New teachers : Easy desk arrangements for the classroom - I move my desks around all the time, depending upon the activities I'm doing that day. It took me forever to realize I can have the kids move their desks, after I mark the spots with masking tape. You don't want to have the kids moving into formations all the time, but occasionally it's a smart thing to do. Tell them you need their help prior to movement. It's a team building activity. It's not your classroom that way, it's "our" classroom. They will want to help you.

Free Lesson Plans, Classroom Activities, Projects:  Since we look at many ancient cultures during the same school year, kids can actually forget what culture they are studying while they are studying it. Peloponnesian War

Q: How do Ancient Greeks want to be remembered?

In Ancient Greece, Athens and Sparta were the most powerful and influential Greek city-states. At this time, the leader of the Athenians was Pericles. As Xerxes and his Persian army retreated,  Athens grew more powerful and tensions rose, escalating into nearly three decades of war. Sparta emerged victorious, while the constant fighting left Athens bankrupt, exhausted and demoralized. Neither city-state regained the military strength they once had.

A: Ancient Greeks want to be remembered as brave warriors and heroes. Most notably, the Spartans.

Spartans and Athenians

The Spartan and Athenian civilisations were both very different in their cultures. Spartans were fundamentally professional soldiers, which differs immensely from Athenians, who boast the birthplace of the educational classroom. The list of key figures each left behind as a legacy: Spartans are remembered for Leonidas and the 300, Athenians boast key figures of a varying nature, from Socrates (philosopher and teacher) to Alexander the Great (created one of the largest empire in ancient history).

Athens was the most developed city in Greece, having introduced laws, formal education, sport, democracy and politics. However it has to be noted that in contrast to Spartans, these areas mattered most to Athenians.

Spartans were illiterate (for the most part), they were educated in the art of war, and seeing as how slaves outnumbered the Spartans 10:1 this is hardly surprising. Due to “in-house” wars constantly unfolding in Sparta, the idea of expansion to new lands was not a dream of Spartans.

It could be argued that Athens was a city before its time in many respects due to its multi-dimensional cultural and political achievements. Other than the marginally increased prestige of women in comparison to other Greek cities, Sparta arguably is famous on a more one dimensional level, Fighting.

In any case, both cities achieved in abundance, and although very different, both landmark their place in history.

Athens and Athenians

Athens was the largest city in Greece, and controlled a region called Attica. Between the many mountains were fertile valleys, with many farms. Athens became rich because Attica also had valuable sources of silver, lead and marble. Athens also had the biggest navy in Greece.

Athens was a beautiful and busy city. People came to the city from all over Greece, and from other countries, to study and to trade. The city’s most famous building was the temple called the Parthenon. It stood on a rocky hill called the Acropolis. Inside the Parthenon stood a statue of the city’s protector-goddess Athena.

This PowerPoint explores the nature of the Athenians (the people who lived in Athens). It mentions a few key Athenians, how the city was named, myths, key buildings which gives an insight to the city and culture at that time.

The Ancient Olympics

This PowerPoint explores the origins of the games, Zeus, competitors, judges and more.

The first Olympics had only the footrace. Over time longer races and new events were added. The games were held at Olympia, in the Peloponnesus, on the site of a major temple. The aim of the games was to honour Zeus.

Quick Facts:

  • Greeks came from all over the Mediterranean to compete in the games.
  • A truce was declared a month before the games to allow people to travel. This meant wars and battles were postponed.

A: They want to be remembered as being athletic, powerful, strong and most importantly, as winners.

Olympic Games

The Olympic Games originated over 2,700 years ago in Olympia, a location in southwest Greece. The Games were part of a religious festival and people from all over the Greek world came to watch and take part. The Greek Olympics, thought to have begun in 776 BC, inspired the modern Olympic Games, which was introduced by Pierre de Coubertin in 1896. The Games were held in honour of Zeus, king of the gods, and were staged every four years at Olympia, a valley near a city called Elis.

Milo of Kroton

One of the most legendary athletes in the ancient world, Milo of Kroton, wore the victor’s crown at Olympia no less than six times. Born in southern Italy, where Greece had many colonies, Milo won the boys’ wrestling contest in 540 BCE.

He returned eight years later to win the first of five consecutive wrestling titles, a feat that seems incredible by modern standards. Rarely do modern-day Olympians compete in more than two or three Olympiads over the course of a career. Much like the boxer George Foreman, Milo resisted retirement: By the time of the 67th Olympiad in 512 BCE, Milo was probably forty or more years old but he competed anyhow. The challenger won not by overpowering Milo, but by avoiding the older wrestler and wearing him out.

According to our ancient sources, Milo enjoyed showing off his unrivaled strength. For instance, he would clasp a pomegranate in his hand and have others try to take it away from him. Even though he was holding it so tightly that no one could remove it, he never damaged the fruit. Sometimes, he would stand on a greased iron disk and challenge others to push him off of it. Another of his favorite exhibitions was tying a cord around his forehead, holding his breath, and breaking the cord with his bulging forehead veins. Other times, the wrestler would stand with his right arm at his side, his elbow against him, and hold out his hand with thumb pointed upwards and fingers spread. No one could successfully bend even his little finger.

Greeks and Gods

The Ancient Greeks believed that gods and goddesses watched over them. There were many popular gods and goddesses during this time.  The gods were believed to be immortal and powerful beyond measure. So powerful that they could control the weather.

Just like the Christian God’s heaven, a family of gods and goddesses lived in a cloud-palace above Mount Olympus. Mountain Olympus was the highest mountain in Greece. The gods looked down to watch what people were doing, and from time to time, interfered with what went on.

A list of Gods:

Zeus was king of the gods. He threw thunderbolts to punish anyone who disobeyed him. His brother Poseidon was god of the sea. Another brother, Pluto (also called Hades), ruled the underworld.

Apollo (Zeus’s son) was the sun god, and the god of the arts, medicine, music and poetry.

Artemis (Apollo’s twin sister) was goddess of the moon, and goddess of childbirth, and of all natural things. She is often shown as a hunter with a bow and arrow.

Athena was goddess of wisdom, and of crafts such as spinning, weaving and pottery.

Ares was the bad-tempered god of war.

Alexander the Great

Alexander, known as the Great Greek, was not Greek. He was a Macedonian prince. Macedonia was an empire located to the north of Greece.

Alexander had many teachers, one of which was Aristotle. Aristotle was also born in Macedonia. However, Aristotle lived in Greece for a really long time. He loved the Greeks. He believed in the Greek gods. He knew Greek history and the Greek language and Greek theatre. Aristotle thought the Greeks were clever and interesting and talented, and he spoke of his admiration for the Greeks many times to his student, the young prince, Alexander.

Project History Teacher

I began this blog when I started teaching social studies over ten years ago. I enjoy writing articles about the subjects I teach. I hope they are helpful to you! Thanks for stopping by!

  • 5 Themes of Geography
  • Mesopotamia
  • Indus Valley
  • Spanish Conquest

37 Project Ideas - Geography of Ancient Greece

Verbal-linguistic project ideas (focused on words and language).

  • Write an acrostic poem using Ancient Greece, Geography of Greece, or some similar starter.  Each line should say something about the geography of Greece and/or how it affected the ancient Greeks.
  • Imagine you are a traveler in Ancient Greece.  Write a letter to a fellow traveler about the challenges that you must face because of Greece's geography.  Make recommendations to your fellow traveler on things he or she could do to make the journey easier.
  • Imagine you are trying to persuade the leaders of Greek city-states to come together and pay for public projects that would help make life in Ancient Greece better for all people.  Brainstorm a list of these projects.  Write and / or deliver a speech to convince your fellow Greek citizens that they should support these projects.  Consider how your project would alter and / or help the environment and include that information in your speech.
  • Pick a physical geographical feature of Ancient Greece.  (Examples: Sea of Salamis, Aegean Sea, Crete, Isthmus of Corinth, the Peloponnesus, the pass at Thermopylae, etc...) Write a report or speech about that feature.  One option would be to use the 5 Themes of Geography as a framework .
  • Read an Ancient Greek myth.  Describe how the geography of the places in the story affected the story.  Do the think the storyteller or author of the myth considered geography when they told or wrote the myth?  Should the story be different based on the geography that's in it or should be in it?
  • Pick an event in Ancient Greek history.  Read about the event.  How did geography affect the event?  Consider changing the geography and rewriting the event.  How would it change?  Example: The Persian Wars ...They'd have turned out a lot different if the geography was different!
  • Write a play. Make the characters in your play different geographical features of Greece and see what happens.  For example, how would the Aegean Sea interact in a play with a particular island?  What would they say to each other?  What would they do together?  How could they work together to solve a problem?
  •  Write a Top Ten List (or top seven, five, three, whatever...) Focus your list on geography.  Examples:  "Top Ten Most Epic Natural Disasters for Ancient Greece" or "Top Ten Most Important Places in Ancient Greece."  Make your list, in order of your choosing.  For each item on the list, write a short description of it and why it made the top ten.
  •  Ancient Greek Tweets...Write a series of tweets about the geography of Ancient Greece.  Remember, only 140 characters, including spaces and skipped lines!  Tweets can be from real ancient Greek people or made up. (Example:  @KingLeonidasOfSparta Pass at #Thermopylae AWESOME for defending Persian attack. They must squeeze a few through at a time. #neversurrender)  For extra fun, tweet using the Greek alphabet! (Make sure to give your teacher an English copy also...)
  • Label a blank map of Greece and the Aegean but write the names using the Greek alphabet.  I'd probably write them in English too...

Visual-Spatial Project Ideas

  •  Draw a cartoon map of Ancient Greece and the surrounding region.  Illustrate it with cartoon-like characters showing people, events, etc.
  • Create a comic book or comic strip about the geography of Greece. Make up a hero - or I suppose you could use Hercules...The story line of your comic should have the hero interacting in some way with the geography.  For example, perhaps the hero visits various city-states and helps them overcome the obstacles put up by Greece's geography.
  •  Make a 3D Map of Greece. Make it in Word!  Make it in Minecraft!  Make it out of pasta or some other material!
  •  Create a poster, drawing, painting, etc. that shows examples of the 5 Themes of Geography of Ancient Greece. Use pictures only.  No words!

Mother's Day in Ancient Greece: প্রাচীন গ্রিসেও নাকি পালিত হত মাতৃদিবস, সেই ঘটনা জানলে চমকে যাবেন

Mother's day in ancient greece: আধুনিক ইতিহাস নয়, মাতৃদিবস সম্পর্কে জানতে নাকি ফিরে যেতে হবে প্রাচীন গ্রিসে জেনে নিন সেই কাহিনি।  1/6 মে মাসের দ্বিতীয় রবিবার সারা বিশ্ব জুড়ে পালিত হয় আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃ দিবস। অনেকেই মনে করেন, এই দিনটি পালনের শুরু গ্রিক ও রোমানদের হাত ধরেই। কবে থেকে এই দিনটি পালন করা শুরু হয় কেমন ছিল ইতিহাসের সেই দিনগুলি জেনে নিন এখানে। 2/6 মাতৃ দিবসে মায়েদের ভালোবাসা ও শ্রদ্ধা জানানোর দিন। তবে এই দিনটি পালনের ইতিহাস বেশ পুরনো। শোনা যায়, প্রাচীনকালে গ্রিক ও রোমানরাই প্রথম এই দিনটি পালন করা শুরু করেন। কী ছিল সেই ইতিহাস 3/6 গ্রিক পুরাণে রিয়া হলেন প্রধান দেবী বা মাদার গডেস। অনেকেই মনে করেন, তাঁর উপলক্ষেই এই বিশেষ দিনটি পালন শুরু হয় প্রাচীন গ্রিসে। আর সেই থেকেই চলে আসছে মাতৃদিবস।  4/6 অন্যদিকে সাইবেল ছিলেন আরেক প্রধান দেবী। ফ্রিজিয়া রাজত্বে তাঁর আরাধনা হলেও রোম ও গ্রিস সাম্রাজ্যেও তাঁকে দেবী হিসেবে মানা হত। সাইবেল ও রিয়া দুজনেই ছিলেন মাতৃত্বের দেবী। 5/6 মাতৃত্ব ছাড়াও গর্ভধারণ ও ভালো কৃষি ফলনের জন্য এই দুই দেবীর আরাধনা করা হত নিয়মিত। এই দুই দেবীর আরাধনা থেকেই সংসারে সুখ ও সমৃদ্ধি আসবে বলে মনে করতেন প্রাচীন গ্রিক ও রোমানরা। সেই মতো দুজনকেই দেবীদের মধ্যে প্রধানা বলে গণ্য করা হত। 6/6 এই দুই দেবীর আরাধনাই করা হত বসন্তের সময়। অর্থাৎ ইউরোপীয় সময় মতে, এপ্রিল মাসের আশপাশে। রোমান ও গ্রিকদের সেই আরাধনা থেকেই ধীরে ধীরে তৈরি হয় বিশ্ব মাতৃ দিবসের ধারণা। যা পরে আধুনিক মাতৃ দিবসের বীজ বুনে দেয়।  পুরো গ্যালারিটির জন্য এই বিজ্ঞাপনটি দেখতে হবে ipl সব সর্বশেষ খবর এক ক্লিকে আপডেট পরবর্তী ফটো গ্যালারি /lifestyle/viral-optical-illusion-of-a-picture-of-birds-creating-a-woman-s-face-identify-it-within-seconds-31715499544917.html /lifestyle/how-is-the-name-anna-jarvis-associated-with-mothers-day-know-that-great-history-31715430307983.html /lifestyle/what-is-todays-mothers-day-from-mothering-day-novel-story-written-on-the-pages-of-history-31715412983625.html /lifestyle/relationship-tips-you-are-dating-the-right-person-this-is-how-you-will-understand-how-genuine-your-relationship-is-31714996206506.html /lifestyle/thinking-of-what-gift-to-give-mother-on-mothers-day-here-are-some-unique-ideas-31715343635673.html var pagename = "gallery";
