Fix Google Drive Issues in Schoology

If you're unable to connect to Google Drive from within Schoology (or some other application) here is the fix. Common error messages include "Access denied" and "Request access" when using Google Drive assignments.

Use Google Chrome

This is the simplest sure-fire way for students and faculty to be able to access Google Drive Resources in Schoology. When the Google resource page loads, users will be prompted to authenticate to their RCS Google account.

Removing Access

If you prefer to make this work in a browser other than Chrome, here are steps to fix authentication issues in browsers like Safari:

  • In your Google account, click the grid in the upper-right.
  • Select Account
  • Select Security
  • Under the heading Third-party apps with account access , select Manage third-party access
  • Under Apps connected to your account, open Manage Apps .
  • Under Third-party apps with account access select the app that is giving you trouble (e.g. Schoology) and click Remove Access .

Granting Access and Reconnecting

If the issue was with Schoology, go back to Schoology, and connect again:

  • In your course, click Add Materials
  • Select Add Assignment
  • Launch the Google Drive Assignment app
  • Connect to your Google account.
  • In your course, open the assignment
  • Select Submit Assignment

How-To Geek

What is a 400 bad request error (and how can i fix it).

A 400 Bad Request Error occurs when a request sent to the website server is incorrect or corrupt, and the server receiving the request can't understand it.

Quick Links

What is a 400 bad request error, refresh the page, double check the address, perform a search, clear your browser's cookies and cache, flush your dns, check for file size, try other websites, restart your computer and other equipment, contact the website.

A 400 Bad Request Error occurs when a request sent to the website server is incorrect or corrupt, and the server receiving the request can't understand it. Occasionally, the problem is on the website itself, and there's not much you can do about that. But most of the time, the problem is one you might be able to solve---maybe you typed the address wrong, or maybe your browser cache is causing problems. Here are some solutions you can try.

A 400 Bad Request error happens when a server cannot understand a request that's been made of it. It's called a 400 error because that's the HTTP status code that the web server uses to describe that kind of error.

A 400 Bad Request error can happen because there's a simple error in the request. Perhaps you've mistyped a URL and the server can't return a 404 Error , for some reason. Or maybe your web browser is trying to use an expired or invalid cookie . Some servers that are not configured properly can also throw 400 errors instead of more helpful errors in some situations. For example, when you try to upload a file that's too big to some sites, you might get a 400 error instead of an error letting you know about the maximum file size.

Just like with  404 errors  and  502 errors , website designers can customize how a 400 error looks. So, you might see different looking 400 pages on different websites. Websites might also use slightly different names for this error. For example, you might see things like:

  • 400 Bad Request
  • 400 - Bad request. The request could not be understood by the server due to malformed syntax. The client should not repeat the request without modifications
  • Bad Request - Invalid URL
  • Bad Request. Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand
  • HTTP Error 400. The request hostname is invalid
  • Bad Request: Error 400
  • HTTP Error 400 - Bad Request

Often, you can do something to fix getting a 400 error, but figuring out exactly what can be challenging because of the vague nature of the error. Here are some things you can try.

Refreshing the page is always worth a shot. Many times the 400 error is temporary, and a simple refresh might do the trick. Most browsers use the F5 key to refresh, and also provide a Refresh button somewhere on the address bar. It doesn't fix the problem very often, but it takes just a second to try.

The most common reason for a 400 error is a mistyped URL. If you typed a URL into your address box yourself, it's possible you mistyped. If you clicked a link on another web page and were shown a 404 error, it's also possible that the link was mistyped on the linking page. Check the address and see if you spot any obvious errors. Also, check for special symbols in the URL, especially ones that you don't see in URLs often.

If the URL you are trying to reach is descriptive (or if you know roughly the name of the article or page you were expecting), you can use the keywords in the address to search the website. In the example below, you can't really tell from the URL itself if anything is mistyped, but you can see some words from the name of the article.

Armed with that knowledge, you can perform a search on the website with the relevant keywords.

That should lead you to the correct page.

The same solution also works if the website you are trying to reach changed the URL for some reason and did not redirect the old address to the new one.

And if the website you're on doesn't have it's own search box, you can always use Google (or whatever search engine you prefer). Just use the "site:" operator to search only the website in question for the keywords.

In the image below, we're using Google and the search phrase "site:howtogeek.com focal length" to search just the howtogeek.com site for the keywords.

Many websites (including Google and YouTube) report a 400 error because the cookies they are reading are either corrupt or too old. Some browser extensions can also change your cookies and cause 400 errors. It's also possible that your browser has cached a corrupt version of the page you're trying to open.

To test out this possibility, you'll have to clear your browser cache and cookies. Clearing the cache won't affect your browsing experience much, but some websites may a take a couple of extra seconds to load as they re-download all the previously cached data. Clearing cookies means you'll have to sign in again to most websites.

To clear the cache in your browser, you can follow this extensive guide which will teach you how to clear your cache on all the popular desktop and mobile browsers.

Related: How to Clear Your History in Any Browser

Your computer might be storing outdated DNS records that are causing the errors. A simple flushing of your DNS records might help solve the problem. It's easy to do, and won't cause any problems to try. We've got full guides on how to reset your DNS cache on both Windows and macOS .

Related: What Is DNS, and Should I Use Another DNS Server?

If you're uploading a file to a website and that is when you are getting a 400 error, then the chances are that the file is too big. Try to upload a smaller file to confirm if this is causing the issue.

If you've been trying to open a single website and getting 400 errors, you should try to open other websites to see if the problem persists. If it does, it might be a problem with your computer or networking equipment rather than the website you're trying to open.

This solution is a hit and miss, but restarting your computer and especially your networking equipment (routers, modems) is a common way to get rid of a lot of server errors.

If you've tried all the solutions and the error doesn't seem to go away, then the website itself might be having a problem. Try to contact the website through a contact us page (if that works) or through social media. Chances are, they are already aware of the problem and working on fixing it.

What’s the problem with schoology where do we start.

New district grading platform is confusing mess for students to navigate

Gaby Jimenez , Opinions Editor | September 3, 2021

Schoology+knocked+Schoolloop+out+of+Cal+High+and+the+rest+of+the+San+Ramon+Valley+Unified+School+District+to+become+the+champion+of+grading+platforms.+Unfortunately%2C+many+students+find+it+confusing+and+difficult+to+navigate.

Schoology knocked Schoolloop out of Cal High and the rest of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District to become the champion of grading platforms. Unfortunately, many students find it confusing and difficult to navigate.

At first glance, Schoology looks like an average school communication tool. Students have access to grades, assignments, and additional class information like any other website a high school student logs into daily to fulfill their educational needs at home.

But look closer and a variety of flaws and inconveniences are frequent when simply trying to navigate the site.

Before initially drawing your attention to the many reasonable complaints against Schoology, it must be acknowledged that the sole reason we have to cope with this newfound website is because of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s poor prioritization of what is important in a website. Previously used online programs were apparently not good enough to use again this school year, despite the fact that there were absolutely no complaints from students regarding technological difficulties.

Students are the ones who are stuck with adapting to the new normal in education. Why can’t we have a say in what primary website we use?

If students were able to share their opinions about which platform they preferred, most would support SchoolLoop and Google Classroom. These are sites that we have been using since the beginning of online learning last year, and for some of us, even since middle school.

SchoolLoop and Google Classroom have many advantages that Schoology lacks. It’s easier to find contact information. To submit an assignment all we have to do is click a button or check a box. Our grades are shown without even having to mindlessly click from tab to tab. The list goes on and on.

In addition to Schoology’s absence of useful tools and simple access to resources, its overall design is beyond bland as if it were last updated when we were in elementary school. Students, especially those who now are reliant on technology to succeed, need more sleek and well-designed web pages in order to efficiently achieve basic school tasks online.

Why unintentionally waste time navigating probably one of the most dated-looking websites anyone has ever seen when we could intentionally waste time by ignoring visible homework assignments?

From looking for a teacher’s email to finding information on a homework assignment, it should not be annoying to merely read texts and tap options without knowing which button is which when we could methodically and easily navigate what we need to find with sites that we already know.

When SchoolLoop was the prime website Cal High and the rest of the district used for grades and communication, teachers would often say, “Loopmail me!”, or “Ask questions under the assignment!”. That was how easy it was to communicate with teachers and peers while using SchoolLoop.

Now, in the case that students have to contact a teacher or supervisor, we have to use our school emails or be advised to come during Student Support because Schoology’s communication abilities lack familiarity. In other words, there is too much effort put into working around these flaws.

When we wanted to view homework or class assignments on Google Classroom, all we had to do was click on our class’s profile and everything would be there. On Schoology, a bundle of assignments are squished together on a sidebar and without elite memorization, it’s more difficult to differentiate which assignments belong to which class.

Additionally, Google Classroom included direct access to documents on Google Drive, its neighboring storage service. Not only are its widgets and capabilities more advanced and simple, but announcements and notes left by teachers were much easier to view. On Google Classroom, we were able to see comments just by clicking on the class link. I have no idea if my teachers have sent my classes reminders on Schoology and at this point, I’m too afraid to ask.

Which leads to the next concern: Do teachers even know how to operate Schoology themselves? Within every class, I’m seeing less mention of Schoology from teachers, other than the understandable complaints about it.

We have grown familiar with sites such as SchoolLoop and Google Classroom, so it makes little sense for us to suddenly change our educational technological ways. And as much as it bores us to admit it, school is so important that it is an absolute necessity for us to have the correct tools. Schoology is not that tool.

Looking at your article, it is evident that you are not familiar with Schoology. How much research into the actual product have you done? Schoology and Google Drive link up, and everything works the same as in Google Classroom. The biggest update is access to a grade book that syncs with your SIS, which Google Classroom lacks without a ton of set up.

If someone has every student in one class (which is the norm of Google Classroom), then Schoology was not set up properly. Each student should be contained in a class with just those classmates, no bumbling between what belongs to whom.

Well written article Gabby. They really should put students on user committees to test applications before committing to implementing them as well as teachers. There really is no more value user feedback.

How to Unsubmit Assignments on Schoology

Schoology, the popular learning management system (LMS), offers a streamlined way for students to submit their assignments online. But what happens if you accidentally submit the wrong file, an incomplete version, or realize you need to make substantial changes? Don’t worry – Schoology provides the option to unsubmit assignments in most cases.

This guide will walk you through the steps of unsubmitting assignments on Schoology, as well as provide essential tips and considerations before you take this action.

Table of Contents

Understanding When You Can Unsubmit Assignments

Before we dive into the “how,” let’s clarify when it’s possible to unsubmit assignments:

  • Before the due date: Generally, you can unsubmit assignments as many times as needed before the specified due date.
  • Before the teacher grades: In most cases, you won’t be able to unsubmit an assignment once your teacher has started grading it.
  • Teacher permissions: Some teachers may disable the unsubmit option in their course settings.

Step-by-Step Guide to Unsubmitting Assignments

Here’s how to unsubmit an assignment on Schoology:

  • Navigate to the Course: Go to the specific course where you submitted the assignment.
  • Access Submissions: Find the assignment and click on the “Submissions” tab or a similar button.
  • Locate Your Submission: Your submission should be listed with its status (e.g., “Submitted”).
  • Click ‘Unsubmit’: Click the “Unsubmit” button or a similar option next to your submission.
  • Confirmation: A pop-up window will usually appear, asking you to confirm the unsubmission. Click “Yes” or “Unsubmit.”

Your assignment status should change to “In Progress,” allowing you to make edits and resubmit.

Important Considerations Before Unsubmitting

  • Late Assignments: If you unsubmit an assignment after the due date, it may be marked as late, depending on your teacher’s policies.
  • Losing Work: Ensure you save a copy of your work before unsubmitting, just in case there are any technical issues.
  • Communication is Key: If you’re unsubmitting close to the due date or if you need substantial additional time, consider contacting your teacher to explain the situation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can i unsubmit multiple assignments at once.

Unfortunately, no. You’ll need to unsubmit assignments individually.

What if I don’t see the “Unsubmit” button?

Your teacher may have disabled this feature for the course. Contact your teacher to inquire about alternative options.

Will my teacher see that I unsubmitted an assignment?

In some cases, your teacher might receive a notification. However, the primary focus is to ensure you are submitting your best work.

Unsubmitting assignments on Schoology is a straightforward process that can relieve stress and allow you to improve your work. By understanding the guidelines and following these steps, you can confidently manage your submissions and achieve the best possible grades.

Schoology API Assignment Attachment

Attaching External Material to Schoology Assignments using API

Abstract: Learn how to use the Schoology API to attach external materials to assignments.

In today's digital classrooms, teachers are always looking for ways to make their lessons more engaging and interactive. One way to achieve this is by attaching external materials to Schoology assignments using the Schoology API. This article will provide a detailed guide on how to use the Schoology API to create assignments and attach external materials to them.

What is Schoology API?

Schoology API is a RESTful API that allows developers to interact with the Schoology platform programmatically. With the Schoology API, developers can create, read, update, and delete various resources such as courses, users, assignments, and grades. The Schoology API uses standard HTTP methods such as GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE to perform these operations.

Creating Assignments using Schoology API

To create an assignment using the Schoology API, you need to make a POST request to the /v1/assignment endpoint. The request body should contain the assignment details such as the title, description, due date, and associated course and section. Here's an example of a JSON payload that can be used to create an assignment:

Once you make the POST request to the /v1/assignment endpoint with the above JSON payload, Schoology will create a new assignment with the specified details. You can then use the assignment ID returned in the response to attach external materials to the assignment.

Attaching External Materials to Assignments

To attach external materials to an assignment, you need to make a POST request to the /v1/assignment/{assignment\_id}/material endpoint. The request body should contain the URL of the external material and the display name. Here's an example of a JSON payload that can be used to attach an external material to an assignment:

Once you make the POST request to the /v1/assignment/{assignment\_id}/material endpoint with the above JSON payload, Schoology will attach the external material to the assignment. You can repeat this process to attach multiple external materials to the same assignment.

Using the Schoology API to create assignments and attach external materials to them can save teachers a lot of time and make their lessons more engaging. By following the steps outlined in this article, teachers can easily integrate external materials into their Schoology assignments and provide a more interactive learning experience for their students.
