What's the difference between a Masters by Coursework and a Masters by Research?

A  Masters by Coursework  is a professional qualification involving the study of a specified set of core units and a selection of eligible elective units. Undertaking a coursework program will mean that you will attend classes, complete assignments and sit exams where applicable. Some Masters by Coursework also require the completion of a minor thesis as part of the course. Dependent on the course, part-time and online study options are available. For more information, please see our  Postgraduate Study at ECU  web page. A  Masters by Research  involves the submission of a completed thesis based on an independent research project. Students studying a Masters by Research work independently with the support of a supervisor and the School. Students may be required to attend units to help expand skills in the area of research. • They are a less expensive way to access the same classes, faculty, and degree as on-campus programs.

Coursera is probably best known for its free course options, from a Yale psychology class on how to be happy to an immensely popular Stanford machine learning course . It also offers short-term certificate programs from companies like Google and IBM .

But it also has master's degree programs — remote, accessible, and comparatively more affordable routes to what are often the same classes, faculty, and degrees offered to on-campus students.  

Below, you'll find 10 popular Coursera master's programs, which range from electrical engineering to public health. Keep in mind that application deadlines span from May 30 to August 31, 2021.

Master of computer and information technology from university of pennsylvania.

One of the top schools in the world, University of Pennsylvania offers a completely online Master of Computer and Information Technology degree. The MCIT Online program is tailored for non-computer science majors and prepares students for roles in finance, healthcare, education, and government, as well as the core software development industry.

Students come from diverse disciplines (history, chemistry, medicine) and graduates have earned jobs at tech companies such as Amazon, Facebook, Google, Bloomberg, and more.

Master of Business Administration from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

The iMBA program gives online students the same MBA degree as on-campus students. Students web conference into live classrooms, conduct team projects, and interact with professors during virtual office hours to complete 18 courses and three capstone projects. 

Students hail from more than 90 countries and 48 US states, leading to diverse perspectives and a global network. 

Master of Applied Data Science from University of Michigan

The University of Michigan's Applied Data Science master's degree program comes from one of the top 10 information studies programs and blends classroom learning with hands-on projects. S

Master of Science in Management from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from University of Colorado Boulder

The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder is completely online and flexible. Students can take an individual course in the program to build a professional skill or a fraction of the courses to earn a graduate certificate.

To earn the full master's degree, students get to complete their choice of 30-credit hours. They can choose from over 30 elective courses in key areas: power electronics, embedded systems, photonics and optics, controls and communications, electromagnetics, and computer engineering. 

Admission to the program is based on performance, so no formal application is required to begin. You just need to successfully complete one "Pathway Specialization" in order to be officially admitted into the program. Then, you combine those credits with more courses to reach your 30 credits. 

Master of Public Health from University of Michigan

The University of Michigan , another one of the best global universities , offers its own totally online master's degree in Public Health. Master by Research atau Coursework: Ketahui Perbedaan Lengkapnya

Terkadang banyak lulusan program strata satu di Indonesia yang asal ingin lanjut sekolah, “Pokoknya gw mau kuliah master ke luar!”. Setelah mendaftar dan diterima, tidak jarang dari mereka yang panik karena tidak mengetahui bedanya  master by research dan coursework.

Apa Perbedaan  Master by Research  dan  Coursework?

Pada dasarnya kalau di luar negeri, program master (S2) itu terbagi menjadi dua tipe:  research  dan  coursework . Bedanya adalah, kalau “by research”, masa perkuliahan yang ditempuh oleh para mahasiswa selama 2 tahun akan difokuskan pada riset.

Oleh karena itu jika ditanya, “Kapan mulai tesis?” Jawabannya adalah: Ya pada hari pertama menginjakan kaki di kampus. Di hari itulah para mahasiswa sudah memulai kegiatan riset untuk keperluan tesis!

Para mahasiswa dalam tipe program master ini hanya diminta kuliah seperlunya saja untuk menunjang keperluan riset, tidak sampai 20-an sks per semester. Seperti ketika saya melanjutkan studi di Jepang,  master by research , per semester hanya diminta untuk mengambil 3 mata kuliah.

Bagaimana dengan  coursework ? Jenis program master ini dapat dikatakan sama persis dengan tata cara ketika kita kuliah S1. Dalam tipe ini, para mahasiswa tetap diminta untuk datang ke kelas, mengerjakan tugas, ujian, dan seterusnya.

Biasanya, para mahasiswa baru memulai tesis mereka di semester terakhir. Di beberapa negara, master by  coursework  ini bisa diselesaikan dalam waktu hanya 1 tahun, seperti di Australia, UK, atau Belanda.

Biaya Master by Research dan Coursework

Biaya untuk master by research umumnya lebih murah dibandingkan biaya untuk master by coursework terutama untuk master by research di bidang sosial humanities. Sementara biaya untuk master by research di bidang science engineering pada kondisi tertentu dapat setara dengan master by coursework karena membutuhkan aktivitas laboratorium yang intens. Berikut adalah perbandingan biaya untuk master by research dan coursework di Inggris:

Bagaimana Menentukan Pilihan yang Tepat?

Saya selalu  wanti-wanti  ke peserta seminar beasiswa, memilih negara itu sangatlah penting. Bukan hanya agar dapat selfie di Menara Eifel, pacaran dengan orang Jepang, atau naik puncak Alpen, tetapi lebih karena berbeda negara, berbeda pula kebijakan mengenai dua tipe program strate dua ini:  master by research dan coursework .

Misalnya di Jepang, Korea Selatan, atau Taiwan. Pada umumnya di negara Asia Timur ini, program master yang dilaksanakan adalah program  master by research . Contohnya adalah ketika saya ketika saya melanjutkan studi di Jepang, kegiatan akademik yang saya lakukan seperti layaknya orang yang kerja kantoran.

Masuk “ruang kerja” jam 8.00 dan berakhir jam 17.00. Keseluruhannya saya lakukan di laboratorium. Pengecualian hanya terjadi pada saat ada perkuliahan dan para mahasiswa diizinkan untuk tidak berada di lab.

Hampir tidak ada opsi untuk by  coursework , kecuali beberapa program yang memang di- setting berbeda. Misalnya pada program master public policy di GRIPS.

Beberapa negara memberikan opsi untuk para mahasiswanya terkait dengan program master yang akan diambil-nya, apakah dilakukan dengan tipe  research  apa  coursework ?

Sebagai contoh di Aussie atau UK. Yuk kita ambil contoh, University of Sidney. Di universitas ini, terdapat pilihan untuk mengambil master by coursework ataupun master by research. 

Untuk program master by research, biasanya gelar yang akan didapat adalah M.phil, sementara untuk master by coursework gelar yang biasanya didapat oleh para lulusannya adalah M.Sc.

Meskipun demikian, tentu seperti sudah saya tekankan sebelumnya bahwa berbeda negara, berbeda pula kebijakan yang diterapkan. Di Singapura contohnya, untuk program  coursework , gelar yang diberikan adalah M.Sc.

Sedang program  research , gelar yang diberikan adalah M.Eng. Sebaliknya di USA, program  coursework  gelarnya adalah M.Eng, sedang program  research  gelarnya adalah M.Sc.

Kelebihan dan Kekurangan Master by Reasearch atau Coursework

Terakhir, apa saja pertimbangan yang harus dilakukan mahasiswa untuk pada akhirnya memilih tipe program master, apakah master by research atau coursework ? Untuk itu, saya uraikan kelebihan dan kekurangan kedua program ini:

A. Master by Research

• Output  yang diminta adalah minimal membuat 1-2 paper atau  conference , karena memang mahasiswa diminta untuk fokus melakukan riset.
• Pengalaman riset yang dilakukan pada program master ini akan sangat berguna jika mahasiswa tersebut berminat untuk untuk melanjutkan studi doktoral (Ph.D program).

Kekurangan:

Lemah dalam  basic concept ! Hal ini akan terjadi terutama jika si mahasiswa tidak memiliki kedalaman tingkat kelimuan ketika menjalani studi di program strata satu, atau topik riset dalam program master yang dilakukannya adalah studi lintas bidang kelimuan.

Hal ini terjadi pada diri saya sendiri. Bidang keilmuan S1 saya adalah material dan pada jenjang S2, saya mengambil bidang keilmuan biomaterial. Dalam hal ini, saya merasa sangat kurang di  basic ilmu biologinya, terutama ketika saya menjalankan riset.

B. Master by Coursework

Ilmu yang akan didapatkan akan sangat mendalam. Beberapa produk master by coursework seperti ini adalah  Ferry Anggoro Ardy Nugroho   yang sekarang jadi pakar nanoteknologi di Swedia.

Ferry mengambil program master Erasmus Mundus dalam bidang nanoteknologi. Saya tahu betul bagaimana Ferry waktu S1 sangat buta terhadap nanoteknologi, tetapi sekarang sudah sangat jauh berbeda.

Exposure  riset yang kurang. Agak sulit mengharapkan mahasiswa dalam program  master by coursework  dapat menghasilkan  output  sebuah paper international, jelas karena apa yang ia lakukan kebanyakan berada di kelas dan menjalani perkuliahan.

Tiger Woods finishes Masters with his highest score as a pro and sets sights on upcoming majors

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Tiger Woods finished the Masters on Sunday with a record he could do without, walking off the course with a 16-over 304, his highest 72-hole score in a career that spans three decades.

Woods’ previous high was 302 at the Memorial in 2015. He has only failed to break 300 one other time at the Masters two years ago when he shot 78-78 on the weekend and finished at 301.

Despite the score, Woods called it a “good week” and said he’s going to begin preparing for the other three majors including the PGA Championship in May, the U.S. Open in June and the British Open in July.

“This is a golf course I knew going into it, so I’m going to do my homework going forward at Pinehurst, Valhalla and Troon,” Woods said. “But that’s kind of the game plan.”

Overall, he wasn’t unhappy with how he played.

“Coming in here, not having played a full tournament in a very long time, it was a good fight on Thursday and Friday,” Woods said. “Unfortunately (Saturday) didn’t quite turn out the way I wanted it to.”

It hardly mattered to the crowd.

The 48-year-old Woods, who is still dealing with the effects of numerous surgeries that have impacted his body and limited his playing time on the PGA Tour, received a huge roar from the crowd as he pitched close to the hole on No. 18 and made par.

Wearing his traditional Sunday red, Woods tipped his hat the crowd.

Woods has played only 24 holes in one tournament going into the Masters

“I’m just going to keep lifting, keep the motor going, keep the body moving, keep getting stronger, keep progressing,” Woods said. “Hopefully the practice sessions will keep getting longer.”

Woods was in last place among the 60 players who made the cut when he finished. The previous time he finished in last place was in the 2020 Genesis Invitational at Riviera.

Still, the patrons flocked to see the man who took golf’s popularity to new heights, even if he isn’t been the dominant player he once was at Augusta National.

Woods hasn’t really been competitive here since 2020 when he finished tied for 38th one year after his stunning fifth victory at age 43.

He finished 13 over two years ago, then was forced to withdraw in 2023 in the third round due to injuries that weren’t helped by the cold, rainy weather that had taken an obvious physical toll on his body.

For a short time this week Woods showed glimpses of past greatness, relying mostly on his knowledge of the course.

He played the first two rounds in 1 over to make the cut for a record 24th time. But the final two rounds were a struggle for Woods, who posted his worst round of his career at a major with an 82 on Saturday.

“It’s always nice coming back here because I know the golf course, I know how to play it,” Woods said. “I can kind of simulate shots. Granted, it’s never quite the same as getting out here and doing it.”

He played the final 36 holes in 15 over, shooting 77 on Sunday in his 100th career round at the Masters.

Before the round Woods appeared to receive some swing tips from his 15-year-old son Charlie on the practice range.

Things started off well enough, but that didn’t last long.

After playing the first two holes in 1 under, Woods made a bogey on No. 3 before things started to unravel on the par-4 fifth hole when he took an unplayable lie and had to be driven back to the tee box in a golf cart to hit again. He wound up with a triple-bogey 7.

He added another bogey on the 6th.

He nearly chipped in from the sand on No. 16, giving fans a thrill and bringing back fond memories of his iconic chip in in 2005 en route to the fourth of his five championships at Augusta.

Woods said the toughest part of the week for him was battling the wind, which reached 45 mph at times with gusts.

“What it was doing out here to the golf shots and the balls and putting, how difficult the course was playing,” Woods said. “It doesn’t take much to get out of position here. Unfortunately, I got out of position a lot (Saturday) and a couple times today.”

The once-dominant Woods played with Neal Shipley, the only amateur to make the cut at the Masters.

It was a stark reminder of just how long Woods has been around.

Woods’ streak of cuts made at the Masters began in 1997, before the 23-year-old Shipley was born.

Even with Woods being out of contention he still attracting the usual huge throng of fans eager just to get a glimpse of the player that became the face of the sport. Fans applaud after every Woods’ shot — good or bad — and continue to shout encouragement his way.

What is Augusta's slope rating?

A slope rating is a score given to a course to determine its difficulty. The higher the rating, the more difficult the course. Augusta National does not have an official slope rating, but panelists have labeled it anywhere between 135 and 144. For context, the hardest courses have a slope rating of 155.

How many yards is Augusta National?

Augusta National is a grand total of 7,545 yards . The longest individual hole though is the second, measuring out at 575 yards. The shortest hole is the 12th, measuring at a measly 155 yards.

What is the course's most difficult hole?

The 11th hole is widely-considered the most difficult at Augusta. A 505-yard, Par 4, the 11th hole saw players average 4.31 strokes between 1942 and 2016.

How many hole-in-ones have been hit in Masters history?

There have been 34 hole-in-ones in Masters history. The first came in 1934 from Ross Somerville, who smoked an ace from 145 yards out on the 16th hole. Shockingly, Somerville was an amateur at the time he made that hole-in-one. The most recent hole-in-one came in 2022 from Stewart Cink on the same hole, using an 8-iron to hit the cup 166 yards away.

Who has the most Masters wins in history?

Jack Nicklaus holds the record for most green jackets won with six. Woods is sitting at five currently, and the only other golfer with at least four is Arnold Palmer.

A growing number of students are opting to earn their master’s degree online. Learn more about online master's degrees and their particular benefits.

Master's degrees continue to grow in popularity. The National Center for Education Statistics found that the number of master's degrees awarded between 2010 and 2021 increased by 19 percent [ 1 ]. What's more, jobs requiring a master's degree are expected to grow significantly over the next decade, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics [ 2 ].

Whether you opt to begin a master’s program immediately after earning your bachelor’s degree or first enter the workforce and gain some professional experience, an online master’s program can often be more flexible than one completed in person. In this article, we'll discuss more about online master’s degrees, including the types available, what it takes to apply, and how you can determine the best program for you.  

What's an online master's degree?

An online master's degree is a graduate degree you earn online. You can do this either from a traditionally in-person university that offers specific online programs, or from a fully online college that does not offer any in-person experience. Rather than relocate to attend an in-person program, you'll work through your coursework from home, either by attending virtual classes at a set time or by completing asynchronous classes on your own time.

Increasingly, students are opting to earn their master’s degree online. A 2018 study from the Urban Institute found that 31 percent of students enrolled in master’s programs in 2016 earned their degree online [ 3 ]. That's because master's degree students tend to be older, working full-time, and require greater flexibility.  

What types of master’s degrees are available online?

During the 2020-2021 school year, the majority of students earned a master’s degree in business, education, and the health professions [ 4 ]. Engineering and public administration/social services were also popular master’s degrees.

At the master’s level, many students opt to enroll in programs that deepen their interest in a particular industry or career, much like those noted above. Thanks to coursework that spans foundational subjects and more specialized areas of focus, they can gain advanced knowledge and skills to help them pursue certain roles after graduation.

The major difference between an online master's degree and an in-person master's degree is the way you earn it. Your online master's program should provide the same curriculum and skills development as a master's degree earned by attending a person in program.

With an online master's degree, you can pursue more advanced roles, such as the ones below.

Master's degree holders also tend to make higher salaries. According to BLS, those with a master's degree earned a median annual salary of $86,372, compared to $74,464 for bachelor's degree holders [ 5 ].

Online master’s degree costs + time to graduation

An in-person master’s degree costs between $30,000 and $120,000, depending on whether you attend a public or private institution [ 6 ]. However, many online master’s degrees tend to cost less. For example, the University of Illinois' Master of Computer Science , available on Coursera, costs a total of $21,440.  

The length of your program will depend on what you choose to study and where you choose to study it, but a master’s degree takes between 18 months and two years to complete when you attend full-time. 

The Master of Applied Data Science from the University of Michigan , available on Coursera, involves taking 10 courses total, which can be done in as little as 12 months. 

Benefits of earning your master’s degree online 

Besides the lower costs and the opportunity to learn at your own pace, there are a number of other benefits you may experience from earning your master’s degree online. 

Work while going to school: Online master’s programs often provide flexible scheduling, which may make it easier to work full-time while earning your degree. Not only can that help offset some of your degree costs, but it also means you won’t pause your professional development as you focus on your education. 

More school choice: You will have to apply to each online master’s program that you’re considering, but when you choose a fully online program, you won’t have to relocate in order to attend. That means you’ll have more access to some of the top-rated schools in the country—and around the world. 

Network with your peers: Earning a master’s degree online no longer means having to forego the benefits of socializing and networking with your peers. A growing number of online master’s programs foster those kinds of connections using an array of virtual tools.

Although you have the option of attending such master’s programs online—many of which are designed and equipped to help you succeed virtually—you may want to investigate how you will learn important procedures or experiments.

How to select the best online master’s program for you 

Determining which online master’s program will be best for you means first figuring out why you want to earn your master’s degree. What do you want to achieve with your master's? Once you know why you want to pursue a graduate degree, spend time researching programs—both online and in-person—to figure out which makes the most sense for you and your resources.

Let’s go over a few factors you can incorporate into your research. 

Accreditation

Attending an accredited college or university that offers online degrees can provide you with some assurance that you’re earning a quality education. It can also help you qualify for federal student aid via the annual FAFSA form. Each school should note its accreditation type (regional or national).  

Program focus

Many master’s programs list a number of concentrations that can deepen your area of expertise. For example, MPH students can concentrate in environmental health, global health, or epidemiology, or MBA students can concentrate in marketing, operations, or management. If you’re interested in learning about a niche area, look for programs that allow you to focus or concentrate in it. 

Flexibility

An online master’s degree should offer some amount of flexibility, but it can differ by school or program. Find out whether your courses will be asynchronous or synchronous, and how much you’ll be able to work at your own pace in order to determine the best approach for your schedule.  

Some online master’s degrees are entirely online, while others are hybrid (a mix of in-person and online courses). Depending on the structure you prefer, you should find master’s programs that will suit your needs.

Learning technology

Each college or university employs different technology to administer online learning. It helps to know what type of learning management system (LMS) and other virtual tools you might expect to encounter.

Faculty credentials

Who ultimately teaches your courses is important. Spend time looking into each program’s online faculty—many of which may also teach in-person depending on the school. Think about how their expertise or academic qualifications will help contribute to your overall learning. 

Not all online master’s programs foster networking among peers, but if that’s something you’re interested in, then it’s best to find programs that provide that kind of opportunity. 

How to apply to an online master’s program 

Applying to an online master’s program is relatively similar to applying to an in-person master’s program. As you narrow the programs that most interest you, pay attention to their deadlines so that you have all of your materials gathered in time.

Each college or university may have different requirements, but in addition to the application you’ll complete for each program, you can expect to supply the following materials:

Taylor Swift college course seeks to inspire students to emulate her business acumen

Berkeley, California — You might not expect a business school course to begin with students belting out Taylor Swift's "Cruel Summer," but at the University of California, Berkeley, Swift is not just a " tortured poet ," she's a case study in how to build an empire.

"Taylor Swift is a phenomenon," UC Berkeley senior Sejal Krishnan, a chemical engineering major, told CBS News. " Her tour has essentially revitalized so much of the economy and boosted the local economy everywhere she goes."

Undergrads Sofia Lendahl and Miaad Bushala teach Artistry and Entrepreneurship: Taylor's Version to 44 fellow students.

"Taylor is so strategic in all the things that she does," Bushala said. "When you think of a brand, that's all they ever want. They want loyal customers. And that's what Taylor has."

"There's a reason top institutions are studying that," Krishnan added. "They know it's a trend."

Along with UC Berkeley, several universities nationwide — including Harvard and Stanford — are offering classes on the so-called "Swift Effect" in departments ranging from English to political science and gender studies.

Swift's successes and failures, including the battle to  regain control  of her master recordings, are part of the syllabus at UC Berkeley.

"We've also learned about some of the implications she's had on legal issues, such as artist rights and ticketing legislation, which has been really impactful as well, because that's not something you see every day," said student Will Grischo, who is majoring in media studies and art history.

When asked how their families reacted to them taking a course on Taylor Swift?

"My parents were super thrilled," Krishnan said. "My mom took me to the 1989 concert."    

"They (my parents) were like, 'You have to take this class, if it's not now, never,'" said student Jessica Revolorio, a sociology major who is the first in her family to attend college in the U.S.

And Swift now has some students thinking even bigger.

"She's incredibly fearless in the ways in which she doesn't mind taking creative risks," said student Angelique Zoile, who is studying business. "To me it's like, climb the corporate ladder...I'll end up as a manager in five years or so." 

Zoile said she is more ready to take career risks because of this Swift-inspired class.

The most wonderful time of the golf season reaches its conclusion Sunday as the beauty of April surrounds Augusta National Golf Club. The 2024 Masters started as a star-studded affair with a loaded field featuring the best golfers in the world and Scottie Scheffler entering as the favorite. Scheffler held that same position entering Round 4 and has only increased his advantage as the Masters rolls ot a finish.

Scheffler is looking to become the 10th golfer in Masters history to win two green jackets in a three-year span, and given his level of play over the last two years, no one is doubting he can accomplish his goal. Should he do so, he would pick up a $3.6 million winner's check out of a record  2024 Masters prize money allotment -- a $20 million purse .

While five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods set a new record at Augusta National by making the weekend in his 24th consecutive playing of the tournament, he completely ejected on Saturday with his worst score in a major championship round. Tiger rebounded Sunday while playing his 100th round at Augusta National  but nevertheless signed for a 16 over, his worst score to par at a major and the second-worst round overall across his professional career. (At least he wasn't among the major stars who missed the cut .)

Featured Groups : Shane Bacon, Colt Knost and Billy Kratzert will lead  Featured Groups  morning coverage. In addition, Brian Crowell and Smylie Kaufman will serve as announcers for the afternoon  Featured Groups  coverage.

Amen Corner : Grant Boone and Mark Immelman serve as announcers for live streaming coverage of the 11th, 12th and 13th holes.

15 & 16:  Iona Stephen, Ned Michaels and Smylie Kaufman provide commentary and analysis for live streaming coverage on the 15th and 16th holes.

Masters On the Range:  Presented Monday through Sunday on Masters Live, CBS Sports Network, Paramount+ and CBS Sports Digital,  Masters on the Range  will feature interviews with players, analysis of those in the field and breakdowns from the Tournament Practice Area at Augusta National leading up to and throughout the 2024 Masters. Kelly Tilghman, Michael Breed, Brian Crowell, Amanda Balionis and Iona Stephen will provide commentary throughout the week.

In addition to live golf action, Masters Live will present video highlights and Augusta National aerials, as well as historical footage and Interview Room commentary. Masters Live will be available on Paramount+ as well as CBSSports.com and the CBS Sports app for mobile devices.

CBS Sports HQ , the free 24/7 streaming sports news network, will have nearly 50 hours of comprehensive live coverage beginning Monday, April 8. CBS Sports HQ will feature on-site previews and recaps after each round, live look-ins, leaderboard updates as well as interviews with Trevor Immelman following the third and final rounds.  The First Cut  and co-hosts Kyle Porter and Rick Gehman also will be on-site to break down all the action on CBS Sports HQ, with daily podcasts and additional episodes airing on CBS Sports Network.
