Dear Ms. Anderson,

As a sommelier, my goal is to enrich culinary journeys with the perfect wine, a value The Surf Club Restaurant embodies relentlessly. Reading reviews from food critics extolling your exceptional dining experience appealed to my conviction that your restaurant upholds the values of excellence, in-depth wine knowledge, and hospitality.

The Forge entrusted me with the opportunity to showcase my food and wine pairing prowess. I managed a dynamic menu, advising on pairings that reflected seasonal trends and guests’ preferences. Consequently, we noticed a 27% increase in wine sales.

As head sommelier at Vinya Wine, my role involved creating a diverse wine list featuring handpicked choices from 476 vineyards worldwide. Guests were enthralled by the exquisite union of rare and distinctive vintages, accompanied by enlightening educational sessions that fueled a 41% surge in wine sales.

As a Vinos at the Venetian wine auction’s overseer, I meticulously ensured that all featured wines complied with federal and state regulations. My watchful approach fostered integrity across seven successive events without a single violation.

Salesperson pops out of computer screen to depict outselling the competition with sales cover letter

Preparing a restaurant cover letter is like tailoring your service and cooking style to the needs of each customer. However, when applying to jobs, it’s not quite as simple as asking how someone wants their steak done or which sides they’d like.

Instead, review what they outline in the job description to understand each company’s needs and customize your cover letter accordingly. For instance, if you were applying to be a cook at a barbecue restaurant, your ability to operate grills, fryers, and broilers would be essential to emphasize in your cover letter.

Write a tailored greeting and intro for your restaurant cover letter

The first thing to do in your restaurant cover letter is greet the hiring manager by name. You can often find a contact person listed in the restaurant’s job description or on their website. However, if you can’t, simply leading with “Dear [name of restaurant] hiring staff” will work well too.

The next step is to relate to the restaurant’s mission and the essential skills they’re seeking in the first paragraph. For example, someone applying to be a waiter or waitress could explain how they want to use their customer service skills to help the restaurant achieve great tableside service that creates lasting memories for their guests.

The example below doesn’t do a great job since the applicant doesn’t greet anyone by name or relate to the restaurant’s specific mission or goals.

Lacking some details here!

I was pleased to see your job opening for a kitchen supervisor. This looks like a great restaurant to work for, and I would be eager to use my five years of experience to help out in this role.

Instead, aim for an opener like the one below that shows the applicant’s passion for helping The Surf Club Restaurant achieve a great customer experience with in-depth wine knowledge.

A great opener relating to company values!

As a sommelier, I aim to enrich culinary journeys with the perfect wine, a value The Surf Club Restaurant embodies relentlessly. Reading reviews from food critics extolling your exceptional dining experience appealed to my conviction that your restaurant upholds the values of excellence, in-depth wine knowledge, and hospitality.

How to make the body of your restaurant cover letter more impactful

When you get into the body of your restaurant cover letter, it’s time to show how your work experiences and skills will make you successful in the role.

One of the best ways to do so would be to detail metrics-based achievements that will be important to restaurants. For example, you could write about how you helped boost customer satisfaction ratings or used new cooking techniques to get orders prepared 15% faster.

You could also focus on transferable skills if you don’t have much restaurant-related experience. For instance, many jobs in other industries will help you build customer service skills or accurate performance while multitasking.

A great results-based body paragraph!

Come to a memorable closing of your restaurant cover letter

As you close your restaurant cover letter, making a lasting impression on hiring managers will be important.

A great way to do so is by relating to the restaurant’s mission and the top skills like kitchen sanitization or tableside service that you emphasized earlier.

Then, it’s a good idea to thank the hiring manager for their time and end with a light call to action, such as “I look forward to discussing this restaurant host position with you further.”

The closer below doesn’t do a great job since it doesn’t relate to any key details about the restaurant’s mission or the skills they seek.

Not a strong closer!

Thank you for reviewing my qualifications. I believe my skills will make me a great fit for your restaurant, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Jack Thompson

A better option is the closer below that relates to the meaningful connections and collaborative work experience that Red Lobster wants to achieve.

A closer that’s relevant to the restaurant’s needs!

These experiences have refined my abilities to adapt quickly, work collaboratively, deliver high-quality results on time, and make meaningful connections. Red Lobster stands out as the next chapter in my journey, where I can continue serving fantastic seafood dining experiences for every guest. I am looking forward to detailing how I can contribute to your team. Thank you for considering my application.

You should always submit a cover letter with your resume and application, even if the restaurant lists it as optional. It’ll help you stand out by relating to their mission and the specific customer and food service skills they seek.

Restaurants are fast-paced, which means hiring managers review applications quickly. Therefore, you should keep your cover letter to a single page. It’ll help emphasize key skills, like food handling and kitchen safety, stand out.

The best way to optimize the tone of your restaurant cover letter is to try to match the job description’s tone. For instance, if you’re applying to a family-friendly restaurant with an energetic tone, matching that would show how you fit in with their culture. You could even mention how you’ll bring friendly and positive service with a smile while answering all customer questions.

How to write an effective restaurant manager cover letter

Restaurant managers have many essential responsibilities within the service industry including managing staff, resolving customer conflicts, and ensuring a restaurant operates smoothly. To become a restaurant manager, you must write a cover letter that captivates the attention of employers.

In this guide, we will teach you how to write an effective cover letter as a restaurant manager in 5 easy steps. Keep reading to learn all about:

  • How to craft your restaurant manager header & headline
  • Why you should tailor your cover letter for each specific employer
  • What details you need to include in your cover letter introduction
  • Ways to describe your skills & accomplishments as a restaurant manager
  • How to give your restaurant manager cover letter a persuasive conclusion

1. How to craft your restaurant manager header & headline

The first step any restaurant manager must take when writing a cover letter is to create a header and headline. These are important elements that help create a strong first impression on employers .

Your cover letter header is the first bit of information an employer will see and is located at the very top of the document. This header should include:

  • Your name and professional title
  • Your professional contact information
  • The name of the restaurant or establishment you are applying to
  • The address of the restaurant or establishment

Here is an example of a well-formatted restaurant manager header

Jack Jills , Restaurant Manager

(123) 456-7890 | [email protected] | linkedin.com/in/jack-jills

To: Mountain Top Restaurant & Resort Management Department 1234 Street Address Denver, CO, 80014

With your header in place, you will now create your cover letter headline – a short title statement that should include:

  • A keyword related to the position
  • An eye-catching number or trigger word
  • A powerful adjective or verb
  • A promise to the employer that the letter is written specifically to them

Here is an example of an effective restaurant manager headline, followed by a brief breakdown of its main parts

2. Why you should tailor your cover letter for each specific employer

After you have finished up your header and headline, you will now begin the tailoring process for your cover letter . To tailor a cover letter means to edit the information and details to be as relevant to a specific employer as possible, requiring you to research the restaurant thoroughly .

As you research the restaurant, look for key details such as:

  • What the company’s values and current goals are
  • What the company looks for in its staff members
  • Who at the company is responsible for reviewing job applications

This last detail will be used to create a personalized greeting – a type of greeting that addresses a specific person by name – that indicates to the employer the level of research you have completed.

Here are 3 examples of personalized cover letter greetings

  • Dear Mrs. Jane Doe,

Dear Restaurant Supervisor Jane Doe,

  • To Mrs. Jane Doe & the Management Team,

3. What details you need to include in your cover letter introduction

Now that you have all the information you need to tailor and personalize your cover letter, it’s time to write your introductory paragraph.

To make a restaurant manager introduction compelling, you must include:

  • An overview of your professional history (years of experience, specializations, etc.)
  • An opening statement on why you are a great fit for this company
  • A mutual acquaintance (when possible) – including a mutual acquaintance can be a major power move, as it provides the employer with a trusted professional reference immediately.

Pro Tip: To grow your professional network and gain more potential mutual acquaintances, build a professional profile on LinkedIn and connect with colleagues in your industry.

Here is an example of an excellent restaurant manager cover letter introduction

I am a talented restaurant manager with 7+ years of experience working in fast-paced, fine dining environments. In my previous position, I worked with Ms. Kate Miller – an incredibly skilled bartender who now works as a bar manager at your establishment. Ms. Miller informed me of this management opening at your restaurant and strongly recommended I apply.

4. Ways to describe your skills & accomplishments as a restaurant manager

With your introduction out of the way, it’s time to jump into your body paragraphs where you will provide greater detail and insight into your best skills and accomplishments as a restaurant manager.

As you describe your skills and accomplishments , make sure to include details that are highly relevant, contextual, and quantifiable. Remember that this information shows the employer the value you can bring to their restaurant, so make it as specific as possible.

Here are 6 great restaurant management skills to consider describing in a cover letter

  • Staff supervision
  • Hiring and onboarding processes
  • Knowledge of restaurant safety standards
  • Exceptional verbal communication
  • Bookkeeping and basic accounting
  • Schedule management

Here is an example of how to describe an accomplishment in a restaurant manager’s cover letter

As a restaurant manager at [Former Employer], one of my core objectives set forth by my former employer was to find ways to cut back on staffing expenses. By re-organizing the seating arrangements and developing a new schedule with more efficient shift blocks, I was able to reduce staffing expenses by 45%.

5. How to give your restaurant manager cover letter a persuasive conclusion

To conclude your restaurant manager cover letter, you need a persuasive closing statement that includes:

  • An enthusiastic sentence saying you are looking forward to hearing from them
  • How and when they can contact you
  • When you intend to follow up
  • A formal sign-off

Here is an example of an effective closing statement from a restaurant manager's cover letter

If selected as your new restaurant manager, I am confident I can provide your team with the support and leadership needed to succeed. I greatly look forward to hearing from you and am available Mondays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The best way to reach me is at (123) 456-7890. These attributes will only become evident to you when we meet to discuss this opportunity in person.

I wish to be considered for the Restaurant Manager position. I am articulate, presentable, friendly, energetic, and capable of running a large service staff. My understanding and adeptness to aid and provide efficient service to customers will serve your companies goals. Moreover, my bilingual skills, life experiences and studies have given me the practical know-how, which would be a great asset.

I am looking forward to expanding my experiences and encountering new growth and potential possibilities, which I believe your company can afford me. I welcome the opportunity to discuss with you in greater detail the position and hope to schedule an interview with you in the upcoming weeks.

I am submitting my resume to be considered for a Restaurant Management position at a great, innovative restaurant. I am currently with Buffalo Wild Wings after a year as ARM with Applebee’s. Before Applebee’s, I was the Managing Partner at Outback Steakhouse in Syracuse, going on my third year at that position.

I have worked in the industry for 17 years, 10 of them with Outback. I have worked every position in the restaurant, moving my way around the upper Midwest in various positions. I opened one restaurant as a Kitchen Manager, one as a Front of House Manager, and one as a Managing Partner. I believe these experiences have made me a strong leader, people developer, motivator, and Partner. They have also given me the experience that is vital to new restaurant openings, or retooling.

I have trained three Managers, and various Back of House and Front of House Training Coordinators. I am strongly self-motivated, energized, organized, and have strong people skills that give me an advantage working with the guests and building regulars. I have worked in the restaurant industry ever since I got my first job as a hostess at age sixteen. I quickly was promoted to a waitress position, and often was responsible for seating sections of 15 tables or more. Through this job, I became acquainted with the fast-paced nature of restaurant work and learned the customer service skills that have served me so well ever since. I was eventually promoted to head waitress and learned to manage a staff that often struggled under their workload. I learned the right way to provide guidance and help where necessary to ensure that all the waiters and waitresses on my staff were able to succeed.

As I mentioned before, I am currently the manager at O’Donnelly’s Bar and Grill. I have held this position for the last five years and under my direction, the restaurant has grown so profitable that we were able to open up a second location downtown. I have also gained experience with attracting qualified and reliable staff; as such, we have earned critical acclaim both for our service and our recipes. I am also skilled at anticipating our needs and ordering ingredients and food at accurate volumes to ensure as little waste as necessary. Over the years I have built up strong relationships with local and national food suppliers which allow me to get better deals for the restaurants I am working for.

Show your passion for the restaurant’s mission

Restaurants are more than just restaurants. They are places where people go to enjoy great food in a fun, social environment. To convey this in your cover letter, address the restaurant’s mission in your introduction and briefly discuss how you can contribute to their success.

For example, if you’re applying for a position at a new restaurant that emphasizes farm-to-table dining, you might mention that you carefully plan meals that emphasize fresh ingredients. This shows potential employers they can trust you to execute their vision.

Explain how you’ve built a successful team

A restaurant manager needs to be able to manage a team and motivate them to do their best. To show that you can do this, discuss the ways that you’ve motivated and inspired your teams to achieve success. For example, if you were able to boost employee morale by implementing new programs or initiatives at your previous job, make sure to include it in your cover letter.

Another way to demonstrate your ability to build and lead a team is by describing any projects or events where you had the opportunity to work with a large group of people and how well you handled it. For example, if you organized a large conference last year, talk about how many people attended and how well it went overall.

Demonstrate your ability to lead

Restaurant managers are expected to have strong leadership skills. You can demonstrate your ability to lead in the restaurant industry by talking about how you’ve managed people in the past.

Here are some examples of how you can show your leadership skills in your cover letter:

  • Collaborated with other managers on effective scheduling, hiring, and training strategies that improved overall performance of our staff by 23 percent
  • Created an employee incentive program that resulted in a 28% increase in customer satisfaction scores over the previous year, which contributed to a 6% increase in revenue.
  • Implemented companywide customer service training that increased average check size for our servers by 6%.

Use proper grammar and punctuation in your cover letter

When writing a cover letter, it’s important to pay attention to grammar and punctuation. Your cover letter is a document of self-representation, so it’s important to be as professional as possible.

To ensure you’re using proper grammar and punctuation, reread your work aloud and listen for errors. If you’re unsure about any of your work’s grammatical aspects, look at them in a different light; for example, you could ask yourself if the sentence is too long or if there are any spelling mistakes.
