Demonstrating your competence and dedication is key, and you’re a natural at it. But how can you achieve this in a concise letter? Just research the job description and ensure that every paragraph closely aligns with it.

This tailored approach reflects your genuine enthusiasm for the role and helps you stand out from the crowd.

Start things the right way with your intro

To kick off your cover letter with a bang, begin by addressing the hiring manager directly. You can explore the company’s online presence, like LinkedIn or its website, to find the right name. In case you absolutely can’t find one, a “Dear Hiring Manager’ or “Dear [Pharmacy Name] Team” will do the trick.

Following the greeting, captivate the reader’s attention with an engaging opening paragraph. Showcase your passion for patient care or your proficiency in handling prescriptions, tailoring it to the specific role.

Express why you’re excited about this pharmacy technician position and highlight how your experience aligns seamlessly with the team’s needs.

Make sure to steer clear of the common mistakes in this example. It focuses too much on inexperience rather than the candidate’s strengths.

I came across your pharmacy technician opening and thought I’d give it a shot. I don’t have much experience, but I hope someone at your pharmacy can train me.

This next opening was clearly written by a professional. It’s tailored to the company in question and shows proper research and interest in the role.

They’re hooked!

My pursuit of a gratifying career in the pharmacy sector has led me to CVS Specialty Pharmacy, a place that resonates deeply with my proficiencies and commitment to exceptional healthcare. I am equally passionate about leveraging my skills to positively influence healthcare accessibility and believe that a pharmacy’s role extends beyond just dispensing medication—it involves empathy, counseling, and a broader understanding of the healthcare continuum. As your pharmacy technician, I aim to utilize my expertise and zeal to enhance your client’s healthcare experiences.

Show that you’re an expert in the body paragraphs

Now, let’s move to the heart of your cover letter. These paragraphs, typically two or three, expand on the strong introduction you’ve crafted. Here, you’ll spotlight your professional journey and your proudest accomplishments as a pharmacy technician.

The exact content will depend on your background. You could talk about your adept management of medication inventory, ensuring seamless dispensing, or you could highlight your precision in compounding prescriptions and verifying dosages for patient safety.

Don’t forget the numbers – always quantify your successes. Share how you handled a certain number of prescriptions daily or improved prescription fulfillment time.

Why the tailored approach? It’s simple—by weaving in elements from the job description , you showcase your tailored fit for the role. Your credentials, success stories, and quantifiable metrics provide concrete evidence that you’re the one for the job.

You’re hired!

My expertise in managing prescription labeling for nearly 837 weekly prescriptions resulted in 99.4% accuracy at Thorek Memorial Hospital. Also, a peer-review system that I implemented reduced medication errors by 17%, upholding established guidelines on Medication Safety Practices.

Make sure they’ll remember you

The closing paragraph wraps up your cover letter by emphasizing the alignment between your values, qualifications, and the company’s mission. Research the company’s background to find a connection you can connect to.

As an example, if you’re applying to a pharmacy that emphasizes community outreach, you might mention your enthusiasm for contributing to local health initiatives.

Reiterate your strengths in a way that echoes the job description . For instance, highlight your commitment to optimizing prescription fulfillment efficiency to support the pharmacy’s growth goals.

Always wrap things up with gratitude for the opportunity to be considered and conclude with a professional signoff like “Sincerely” or “Best regards.”

Now, let’s talk about an example that misses the mark. This candidate would’ve been better off saving that information for the interview.

Better not!

I can’t wait to join your team. Just a heads up, I’m not available until next month due to vacation plans.

Below is an example of how to sign off in a great manner. It paints the candidate as an expert and draws a connection to the company.

That’s the way to do it!

My track record of improving prescription processing, enhancing medication safety measures, and my dedication to patient-centered care make me a promising candidate for this position. I look forward to discussing how I can foster your mission. Thank you for your consideration.

Tailor your tone to match the pharmacy’s culture and the job description . If the job listing is highly formal, keep your tone the same. If, however, there’s an emphasis on collaboration and a friendly atmosphere, you can ease things up a little.

Your cover letter should be clean, professional, and concise, so it’s best to keep it focused. Talk about your knowledge of medication and pharmaceutical software, but skip discussing company culture in previous roles or your hobbies.

Highlight your relevant education and certifications, like if you’re a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). In your opening, showcase your commitment to the profession. Emphasize transferable skills from previous jobs, such as attention to detail and organization.

As a licensed Pharmacy Technician with the state of California, I am writing to express my strong desire to obtain employment at your office. I am a new resident to the city of Los Angeles who is actively seeking employment with a company that celebrates diversity.

My work experience includes ten years as a retail pharmacy technician and five years operating as a tech in a hospital setting. Highlights of my expertise include:

  • Fifteen years as a pharmacy technician

  • Departmental awards for teamwork and precision

I earned my pharmacy technician certificate from the University of Washington in Seattle in 2001 and immediately began working in my field at Target. My hard diligence paid off as I received positive reviews throughout my tenure at the retail chain. Promotion to department lead came relatively quickly in 2005, and progression to the sector’s supervisor came in 2007.

My attention to detail was like none other at Target. I alerted pharmacists of red flags in prescription orders on two separate occasions that shielded the corporation from negative publicity and legal trouble. Show how you work well with others

Pharmacy technicians must be able to work well in a team environment. To show that you’re the right fit for the job, talk about your experience working on pharmacy teams/teams of other types, highlighting why it’s important to have team members who are willing to help each other out. You can also talk about your past experiences working as part of a “team” in general, especially if they align with things like empathy or communication skills.

Show How You Will Make A Difference

Note how your past experiences and skills will make you a valuable asset to the organization. Use previous work-related examples that highlight your ability to excel in this position. If you don’t have any experience, then use non-work related examples that still showcase your skill set and drive for success.

Use Keywords

When applying for a job as a pharmacy technician, use the keywords listed in the job description to your advantage. If possible, try to relate each of these keywords to an experience you have had at work or school that proves you are qualified for the position. By doing this, it shows that not only do you have what it takes to do well in this role but also that you’ve done your research about the company and understand what they’re looking for in an ideal candidate.

Proofread your cover letter

Pharmacy technicians should have strong attention to detail and a keen understanding of pharmacy practices. Errors in your cover letter will suggest you lack the ability to accurately calculate medication dosages, ensure that patient needs are met, and keep a professional demeanor with patients. As such, proofreading your cover letter is crucial for success as a pharmacy technician.

1. Craft your pharmacy technician cover letter header & headline

The first step to writing an excellent cover letter as a pharmacy technician is to craft your header and headline. First up is your cover letter header , which contains crucial information such as:

  • Your name and professional title
  • Your professional contact information
  • The name of the pharmacy you are applying to
  • The address of the pharmacy

As you create this header, use larger and bolded fonts to make your name stand out . This is the first information an employer will see, so you want your personal information to be memorable.

Here is an example of a well-formatted pharmacy technician header

Jack King , Pharmacy Technician

Once you have created your header, the next step is to write a compelling cover letter headline . While headlines are optional, these title statements can help hook an employer’s attention and make your letter more captivating overall.

A strong cover letter headline will include a keyword related to the position, an eye-catching number or trigger word , a powerful adjective or verb, and a promise statement that informs the employer the letter is tailored specifically for their company.

As you research a company to begin this tailoring process, look for information such as:

  • What language and keywords the company uses in their job descriptions, company mission, and marketing materials. This information can be used to adjust your writing style to be more in line with the employer’s.
  • Key skills and responsibilities the company lists in their job descriptions. These skills are the ones you should focus on describing in your own cover letter.
  • The person at the company who will review your cover letter. Use this detail to create a personalized greeting that addresses a specific person by name.

3. Write an effective & eye-catching pharmacy technician introduction

After you have completed your header and headline – and have researched the company you are applying to – it’s time to begin writing the content of your letter.

The first paragraph is your introduction, where you will provide:

  • A brief overview of your professional history (years of experience, specializations, etc.)
  • A statement on why you are enthusiastic about applying to this company
  • A mutual acquaintance (when possible) – including a mutual acquaintance can be incredibly useful, as it gives the employer an immediate and trustworthy professional reference.

Pro Tip: To expand your professional network – and gain a mutual acquaintance you can name in a cover letter – use a professional platform like LinkedIn to connect with other people in the pharmacy industry.

Here is an example of an effective introduction from a pharmacy technician's cover letter

I am a pharmacy technician with 5+ years of experience working in inventory management and pharmacy data input. Recently, I connected with one of your current pharmacy techs, Ms. Jane Doe, on LinkedIn to ask about your current openings. After learning of your pharmacy’s high level of commitment to both patient education and satisfaction, I decided your pharmacy’s values align perfectly with my own.

4. Describe your best skills & accomplishments as a pharmacy technician

Next on your writing to-do list are the body paragraphs . A good pharmacy technician cover letter will contain between 2 to 4 body paragraphs that describe your relevant skills and accomplishments.

As you describe these qualifications, make sure to include key details such as:

  • Context: Always provide context around your skills and qualifications, such as including the responsibilities of a previous role you held.
  • Quantifiable Information: When possible, offer the employer quantifiable and verifiable facts concerning your accomplishments, like public data or statistics.
  • Specificity: For your skills, be as specific as possible when describing each one. For example, don’t just say you have communication skills, explain your communication style and how you apply it in the workplace.

Here are 6 pharmacy technician skills to describe in a cover letter

  • Prescription order screening
  • Pharmacy inventory management
  • Proper medication storage procedures
  • Electronic file and record management
  • Investigational drug studies
  • Preparing prescriptions for pick-up

Here is an example of how to describe an accomplishment in a pharmacy technician cover letter

As a pharmacy technician at [Former Employer], I oversaw the pharmacy’s inventory management and storage procedures. By implementing a new daily inventory process, I reduced wasted and expired medications by more than 20%.

5. Finish your pharmacy technician cover letter with a strong conclusion

Our final tip for writing a pharmacy technician cover letter is to end with a strong conclusion .

Your closing statement serves a key purpose besides wishing the employer well – it should encourage the employer to contact you promptly. To do so, this closing statement should include:

  • When and how you can be contacted
  • When you intend to follow up
  • A formal sign-off

Here is an example of a strong conclusion from a pharmacy technician’s cover letter

As the newest member of your pharmacy team, I will be committed to efficiency and customer satisfaction. I am eager to learn more about this opportunity and hope to hear from you by next Friday. If I have not, I will reach back out at that time to follow up. The best way to reach me is at (123) 456-7890 between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Have you ever considered just how powerful a personalized salutation can be?

We sure have news for you! Your pharmacy technician cover letter should start with the right salutation to recruiters, nurturing a sense of respect and individuality.

Greet recruiters by using their first name (e.g. "Dear Tom" or "Dear Patricia") if you've previously established contact with them.

Otherwise, opt out for the less familiar, "Dear Ms. Peaches" or "Dear Ms Kelsey", if you've found the recruiter's name on LinkedIn or a corporate website.

"To whom it may concern" is never a good option, as it creates a sense that you've been sending out your pharmacy technician cover letter to anyone. Instead, use "Dear HR team" or "Dear (company name) recruiter" for a feeling of exclusivity.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Name of the Pharmacy Manager or Supervisor],
  • Dear Dr. [Last Name],
  • Dear [Pharmacy Department Name] Team,
  • Dear Human Resources Director,
  • Dear [Name of the Recruiter],

  • how you see yourself growing into the role;
  • the unique skills you'd bring to the organization.

Whatever you choose, always be specific (and remember to uphold your promise, once you land the role).

  • motivation - describe how you envision your professional growth in the next up to five years, thanks to this opportunity.

  • Has single-spaced paragraphs, is wrapped in a one-inch margin, and uses the same font as the pharmacy technician resume;
  • Is personalized to the recruiter (using their name in the greeting) and the role (focusing on your one key achievement that answers job requirements);
  • Includes an introduction that helps you stand out and show what value you'd bring to the company;
  • Substitutes your lack of experience with an outside-of-work success, that has taught you valuable skills;
