Electric Vehicles

How it works

Electric vehicles have been recognized as being a key technology in helping reduce future emissions and the amount of energy or power used. The term electric vehicle (EV) is commonly used to refer to three main types of electric automobiles, those being the Battery Electric vehicle (BEV), Hybrid-Electric vehicle (HEV) and the Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicle (pHEV).

The Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) has a 2-part drive system, a normal, conventional fuel engine and an electric drive. HEVs are a combination of both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles.

They include an ICE engine, fuel tank, transmission as well as a battery pack and electric motor. Some HEVs only have a small electric motor and battery system to propel the vehicle at low speeds. Depending on the level of hybridization of these two engines, these vehicles are referred to as micro-hybrids, mild hybrids, full hybrids. In all hybrid electric vehicles, the only source of energy comes from fuel, electrical energy is generated secondarily via alternator or regenerative braking. Regenerative braking is a process where the electric motor helps to slow the vehicle and uses some of the energy normally converted to heat by the brakes. HEVs start off using the electric motor, then the petrol engine cuts in as load or speed rises. The two motors are controlled by an internal computer which ensures the best economy for the driving conditions. The hybrid vehicle has been around for almost 20 years now

The Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) is a ‘true’ electric vehicle in that the only source of propulsion is from electrical energy and do not have a petrol engine, fuel tank or exhaust pipe. Its greatest asset is that it produces zero emissions. BEVs are also known as ‘plug-in’ EVs as they use an external electrical charging outlet to charge the battery. BEVs can also recharge their batteries through regenerative braking. Battery Electric Vehicles store their electricity with high capacity battery packs. This battery power is used to run the entire car, all electronics as well as the main-drive motor(s). Battery electric cars are powered by externally sourced electricity such as an electrical outlet or BEV charging stations.

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (pHEV) are very similar to hybrid electric vehicles, except for that the proportion energy used to move the vehicle is electricity, not fuel. The pHEV has larger electrical drives and battery storage capacity than HEVs and are equip with a smaller internal combustion engine only as the battery starts to run low or to replace the electric drivetrain when more power is required. Since the pHEVs can be recharged from an electrical outlet it is possible to drive them completely on electrical power. Compared with the standard hybrid, the rechargeable hybrid increases your comfort, above all. In terms of emissions, it does a little better, if you drive it properly and use the electric engine as much as possible.

While I’ve already stated many advantages to owning an electric vehicle here are some more to consider, and some of the disadvantages as well. The cost of gasoline heavily depends on the current political situation and our dwindling supplies of oil, which some expect to last us around 50 years. On the other hand, the cost of electricity is stable across the country, and improved sources of renewable power are in active development by some of the largest tech companies in the world. Performing basic calculations, the average electric vehicle can save a driver who drives 15,000 miles in a year about $850 annually on fuel. Keep in mind that these estimates have been made without taking any special charging systems into consideration. For EV owners and fleets participating in a smart charging program, the savings can be much higher. This, together with various tax breaks and government subsidies, means that virtually all electric vehicles start to pay for themselves a long time before they reach the end of their expected lifespans, leading to significant savings over time.

One overlooked advantage of electric vehicles is the ability to charge them at home or at a parking lot. People who live in family houses can simply plug in their vehicles after they return home from work and leave the next morning with batteries fully charged. Fleet vehicles can be charged using smart EV charging systems that offer maximum cost savings, thanks to advanced energy management tools. Currently, the fastest method of charging electric vehicles is known as DC Fast Charging. With it, most electric vehicles reach about 80% of charge in 30 minutes. EV owners can also pair home charging stations with solar panels, achieving true zero-carbon driving. But even without a home charging station, it’s becoming easier than ever to charge an EV at a public station.

The Obama Administration unlocked up to $4.5 billion in loan guarantees to support the commercial-scale deployment of innovative electric vehicle charging facilities, and Tesla wants to expand their network of Superchargers to cover all well-traveled highways and major city centers.

Noise pollution is detrimental to human health, and the engines of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles are among its most significant sources. According to a study published by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), “”Tens of millions of Americans suffer from a range of adverse health outcomes due to noise exposure, including heart disease and hearing loss.”” The same study claims that “”nearly 100 million people in the United States (about 50% of the population) had annual exposures to traffic noise that were high enough to be harmful to health.””At 65 mph, the average interior noise of a car with an internal combustion engine is around 70 dB. Electric vehicles, on the other hand, are almost whisper-quiet.

One of the biggest perceived disadvantages of battery electric cars is their limited range, which leads to what is known as range anxiety. To give an example, the 2016 Nissan Leaf can travel up to 107 miles on a single charge. The thought of only being able to drive 100 miles on a charge worries a lot of potential customers, who think that the somewhat limited range of electric vehicles isn’t enough to meet their needs. The truth is that electric cars can handle 87% of trips made by gasoline vehicles, according to a study released by MIT. That’s a much higher number than most people would have guessed, and it will only increase as the technology improves and the network of fast charging stations becomes denser.

Electric vehicles usually cost more upfront than their gasoline- or diesel-powered counterparts, but they are expected to be cheaper than conventional vehicles by 2022, even if the conventional cars improve their fuel efficiency by 3.5% a year. Even though we still have a few years until we get there, most electric vehicles start to pay for themselves a long time before they reach the end of their lifespans, thanks to fuel savings, lower maintenance costs, and government subsidies.

The current state of charging infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired, but the situation is rapidly improving. A new EV Charging Infrastructure report by IHS predicts EV charging stations across the world to grow from more than 1 million units in 2014 to more than 12.7 million units in 2020. And it’s not just the sheer number of charging stations that’s improving, either. Fast charging stations capable of providing 80 miles of electric range per 30-minute charge are now more affordable than ever.

Electric vs. Gasoline-Powered Cars Term Paper

As electric cars become less costly and able to cover greater distances per single charge, consumers more and more tend to view them as a potentially preferable alternative to the traditional gasoline-powered automobiles. Electric vehicles seem to perform better on several crucial indicators, such as maintenance costs, environmental impact, and their effect on public health. However, it is also necessary to take other aspects into account to draw meaningful comparisons between the electric and gasoline-powered automobiles. While electric cars have several positive societal impacts, some of these will likely be tempered by the planned obsolescence, and the limited distance per one charge is likely to limit their use in rural areas.

Electric vehicles are expected to have a positive impact on society in several aspects simultaneously. To begin with, they do not need to burn fossil fuels to operate, and, as a result, leave a smaller carbon footprint than their gasoline-powered counterparts (Malmgren 989). Apart from the environmental impact, one may also expect electric cars to be more beneficial to public health. Fine particle pollution inherent in the exhaust of internal combustion engines has numerous adverse health effects, such as cardiovascular and respiratory harm, cancer, and even early death (Malmgren 989-990). Additionally, electric cars should also have a positive effect on national security in terms of gasoline consumption. According to Malmgren, choosing an electric car over a gasoline-powered one saves up to 344 gallons of fuel per year, leaving it available for other uses (990). By doing so, electric cars reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels. Finally, maintenance costs for electric cars are lower than those for the gasoline-powered ones, suggesting that society will also benefit economically from using them (Malmgren 988). Considering these estimations, electric cars seem to have many positive societal impacts.

However, the positive impact of the electric automobiles on the economy in terms of the maintenance costs is likely overstated. The logic of the assumption is fairly straightforward: the less money people spend on maintenance, the more they have for other productive uses, thus benefitting society as a whole. However, Malmgren’s account of this societal impact is solely based on the cars’ technical features and does not take into account the business component of the situation. As noted by Hanke et al., the management of the firms producing cars is under pressure to create “payable sustainable mobility,” and “payable” is at least as important as “sustainable” in this scheme (17). Even though electric cars do not need oil changes or spark plugs and wires, producing goods that have a long life cycle and next to no maintenance requirements is unprofitable. With this in mind, one may expect that the producers will compensate for reduced maintenance via planned obsolescence, such as contrived durability and repair prevention. Thus, the positive impact of electric cars on the consumer’s spending is likely overstated.

There is one more downside to Malmgren’s economic analysis comparing the costs of operating and maintaining an electric or gasoline-powered car. The author accounts for fuel consumption and maintenance alike, successfully demonstrating that electric cars are advantageous in both aspects and yield thousands of dollars’ worth of savings during their life cycle (Malmgren 988-989). However, while assessing these costs, he omits another important one. Newnan et al. point out that, when selecting a machine, the consumer should consider not only the annual energy worth and other operating costs but also the initial costs (230). This is precisely the aspect that Malmgren largely fails to address: the author compares Nissan Leaf and Honda Civic as popular vehicles “comparable in size and function” rather than the options with equivalent initial costs (987). As a result, the article investigates the maintenance and operating costs of the vehicles under scrutiny with sufficient thoroughness but pays little attention to the initial costs of procuring them. The lack of attention to this factor is an evident downside of Malmgren’s economic analysis.

Another aspect of operating an electric vehicle as opposed to the gasoline-powered one is their limited range per one charge. It is also the single most important treason why electric cars remain largely confined to urban and suburban communities and are less represented in rural areas. Contemporary electric cars have a relatively small range per one charge as compared to the gasoline-powered cars per one fill, which imposes corresponding requirements upon the public charging infrastructure (Gunn 2). As the areas with much higher population density, urban and suburban communities naturally surpass the rural areas in the development of said infrastructure, thus making electric vehicles less applicable beyond cities and towns. The logical way to overcome this limitation is to improve battery technology, extending the range of the electric cars, putting downward pressure on prices, and decreasing the required density of the charging infrastructure (Gunn 2). With the range of the electric vehicles increased to several hundred miles per charge, the barrier currently preventing their wider usage in rural areas will lose its importance, although it is unlikely to disappear entirely.

As one can see, for all the advantages of the electric vehicles over their gasoline-powered counterparts, they do not fare equally well in all aspects. They have numerous positive societal impacts, but the producers will likely compensate for lower maintenance costs via planned obsolescence. This fact, as well as the initial costs and range per charge, underscore the otherwise impressive advantages of the electric cars.

The Evolution of Vehicles

The evolution of vehicles can be traced back to the invention of the wheel in ancient times. From horse-drawn carriages to steam-powered locomotives, and finally to the contemporary era of fuel-powered and electric vehicles, the journey has been remarkable. The evolution has been driven by the human desire for speed, efficiency, and comfort.

Impact on Society

Vehicles have significantly impacted society, shaping our cities and influencing our lifestyles. They have made remote areas accessible, fueled economic growth, and even changed the dynamics of warfare. However, they have also contributed to environmental challenges like air pollution and global warming.

The Future of Vehicles

With advancements in technology, the future of vehicles looks promising. Autonomous vehicles, powered by artificial intelligence, are expected to redefine transportation. Electric vehicles, with their environmental benefits, are set to replace traditional fuel-powered vehicles.

Vehicles, from their inception to their future prospects, have always been at the forefront of technological progress. They encapsulate the human spirit of innovation and our relentless pursuit of better, faster, and more sustainable ways of transportation. As we move forward, it is imperative to balance our need for speed and convenience with our responsibility towards the environment.

500 Words Essay on Vehicles

Vehicles, as we know them today, are the result of centuries of innovation and technological advancement. They have revolutionized the way humans travel, shaping societies, economies, and cultures. This essay delves into the evolution, significance, and future prospects of vehicles, providing a comprehensive understanding of their role in our world.

The journey of vehicles began with simple, human or animal-powered modes of transportation like carts and carriages. The industrial revolution in the 18th century marked a pivotal point in vehicle evolution with the advent of steam-powered engines. However, it was the invention of the internal combustion engine in the late 19th century that truly transformed the vehicle landscape, leading to the development of modern cars.

In the 20th century, vehicles became more than just a means of transportation; they became symbols of status, freedom, and personal identity. The mass production of vehicles, initiated by Henry Ford, made them affordable and accessible to the average person, further embedding them into our societal fabric.

Significance of Vehicles

Vehicles play a critical role in our lives and societies. They facilitate movement of people and goods, contributing to economic growth and development. They’re integral to various sectors, from agriculture and construction to healthcare and public safety.

Vehicles also have a profound social impact. They enable personal mobility, bridging geographical distances and bringing people closer. They’ve shaped urban development, influencing the layout of cities and suburbs. Moreover, the vehicle industry has been a significant source of employment and technological innovation.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

While vehicles offer numerous benefits, they also pose environmental challenges. They’re major contributors to air pollution and climate change due to the emission of greenhouse gases. The vehicle industry also consumes vast amounts of natural resources, from fossil fuels for operation to metals for production.

In response, there’s a growing shift towards sustainable transportation. Electric vehicles (EVs), powered by renewable energy sources, are gaining popularity. They offer a promising solution to reduce pollution and dependence on fossil fuels. Furthermore, advancements in technology are leading to more efficient and eco-friendly production methods.

The future of vehicles is poised to be as transformative as their past. Autonomous vehicles, powered by artificial intelligence, are on the horizon, promising to redefine transportation. They have the potential to improve road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and provide mobility to those unable to drive.

In addition, the concept of shared mobility is gaining traction, driven by the rise of ride-sharing platforms. This could lead to a decrease in vehicle ownership, reducing the number of vehicles on the road and their environmental impact.

Vehicles have come a long way from their humble beginnings. They’ve transformed our lives, societies, and the world at large. As we move towards a more sustainable and connected future, vehicles will continue to evolve, adapting to our changing needs and challenges. They stand as a testament to human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of progress.
