A paper is bad enough, but presentations are even more nerve-wracking. You've got the writing down, but how do you turn it into a dynamic, informative, enjoyable presentation? Why, here's how!

Guidelines and Audience

Know how long the speech must be.
Know how many points you're required to cover.
Know if you must include sources or visuals.

If you're presenting to people you know, it'll be easy to know what to break down and what to gloss over. But if you're presenting to unknown stockholders or faculty, for instance, you need to know about them and their knowledge levels, too. You may have to break your paper down into its most basic concepts. Find out what you can about their backgrounds.

Does the facility have a computer and projector screen?
Is there a working WiFi connection?
Is there a microphone? A podium?
Is there someone who can assist you in working the equipment before your presentation?

Script and Visuals

Step 1 Create a script for your presentation.

Only have one point per notecard -- that way you won't end up searching the notecard for your information. And don't forget to number the cards in case you get mixed up! And the points on your cards shouldn't match your paper; instead of regurgitating information, discuss why the key points of your paper are important or the different points of view on this topic within the field.

Step 2 Decide on a limited number of ideas you want your audience to comprehend and remember.

As you go through this outline, remove any jargon if it may not be understood.

Step 3 Design visual aids to make your presentation even better.

If you won't have access to the proper technology, print visual aids on poster board or foam-core board.
If using presentation software, use words sparingly, but enough to get your point across. Think in phrases (and pictures!), not sentences. Acronyms and abbreviations are okay on the screen, but when you talk, address them fully. And remember to use large fonts -- not everyone's vision is fantastic. [7] X Research source

It's okay to be a bit repetitive. Emphasizing important ideas will enhance comprehension and recall. When you've gone full circle, cycle back to a previous point to lead your audience to the right conclusion.
Minimize the unnecessary details (the procedure you had to go through, etc.) when highlighting the main ideas you want to relay. You don't want to overload your audience with fluff, forcing them to miss the important stuff.
Show enthusiasm! A very boring topic can be made interesting if there is passion behind it.

Practice, Practice, and More Practice

Step 1 Practice your presentation in front of friends and family members.

If you can grab a friend who you think has a similar knowledge level to your audience, all the better. They'll help you see what points are foggier to minds with less expertise on the topic.

It'll also help you with volume. Some people get rather timid when in the spotlight. You may not be aware that you're not loud enough!

Do the same with your conclusion. Thank everyone for their time and open the floor for any questions, if allowed.
Make eye contact with people in the audience to help build your connection with them.

Research your topic thoroughly.

Use reliable sources of information, such as books, articles, websites, or videos, to gather facts, statistics, examples, and quotes that support your main points.

Common Mistakes in English Speeches

Mixing up “lend” and “borrow.” These verbs have opposite meanings: “lend” means to give something temporarily to someone else; “borrow” means to take something temporarily from someone else.

Example-1:

Can you lend me your pen? (correct)
Can you borrow me your pen? (incorrect)

Confusing “me too” and “me either.” These expressions are used to agree with someone else’s statement: “me too” is used for positive statements; “me either” is used for negative statements.

Example-2:

I like pizza. Me too! (correct)
I don’t like pizza. Me either! (correct)
I like pizza. Me either! (incorrect)
I don’t like pizza. Me too! (incorrect)

Saying, “I have 20 years old” instead of “I am 20 years old”. In English, we use the verb “be” to talk about age; we don’t use the verb “have.”

Example-3:

How old are you? I am 20 years old. (correct)
How old are you? I have 20 years old. (incorrect)

Using Double Negatives

A double negative is when you use two negative words in the same sentence; this can make the sentence unclear or change its meaning.

For Example:

I don’t have nothing to say. (incorrect)
I don’t have anything to say. (correct)
I have nothing to say. (correct)

Misplacing Modifiers

A modifier is a word or phrase that adds information or description to another word or phrase; it should be placed as close as possible to the word or phrase it modifies; otherwise, it can cause confusion or ambiguity.

He saw a dog walking down the street with a red collar. (incorrect; it sounds like the person was walking with a red collar.)
He saw a dog with a red collar walking down the street. (correct)

Attempting the question paper properly in 10th board examinations can help you score high marks. Paper presentation is an important aspect and you must attempt the paper in a way that not only make an impact on the checker but also makes him read your paper easily.

Following are some points you must take care when attempting 10th board paper:

1. First read the question paper well The first thing to do read your paper well, understand it well. When writing the answers, you first need to understand what is being asked and how much marks it contains. The answer should be written accordingly- logically and comprehensively.

2. Use the first 15 minutes effectively You get a good 15 minutes in the beginning to read the question paper -- use this time to do just that, READ. Read all the 30 questions in 15 minutes. While reading, mark the questions into categories wise easy, manageable and tough. This is done to have an overall idea about the questions and make a rough plan.

3. Don't worry about the tough ones The moment you find that there are a few tough questions; it is natural that you start worrying about them. This is not required and will only harm your performance. The fact is that they may look a bit tough on the surface, but when you actually work on them you will find most of them to be much easier than they seemed. So be happy about the easy ones and don't get unduly worried about the tougher lot.

4. Prioritise your attempt Always attempt the easy questions first and then move on to the manageable ones and ensure that you complete them before taking on the difficult ones. This will ensure that you are not leaving any question that you know. Once you successfully attempt all the easy and manageable questions, your confidence will grow and you will be mentally ready to take on the more challenging questions.

5. Ensure speed and accuracy Use quicker methods in calculations to ensure that you are not wasting time and your answers are correct. For example, if you make an error in the sign of a term (+/-), you may not be able to solve questions involving quadratic equations or linear equations. Therefore avoiding silly mistakes is very important to save time. Always follow the tricks we discussed in speed strategies.

6. Keep an eye on your watch Keeping an eye on your watch is of course not to increase your stress. This is just to see that you are broadly adhering to the time allocation we discussed in the beginning. A minor variation is not at all a reason to worry.

7. Avoid thinking too much about a question Thinking about the questions before you attempt them is essential; but not to such an extent that you waste a lot of time on one question. Also you need not write a very lengthy answer to a question just because the question is easy and you know it very well. Remember, you need to just answer the question and nothing more. Any over-attempt will be a mere waste of time.

8. Revise your answers Usually the question papers are set in such a way that even after attempting all the questions, students should be left with 5-10 minutes in the end to revise their answers. Do not waste your time and revise all your answers.

9. Select your options wisely In certain questions you will be provided multiple choices. Do not hurry and make your choice smartly. Read questions carefully: Before you begin writing answer, read question carefully. See what is being asked in the question.

10. Use easy language While writing your answer, make sure that you use easy to understand language. An examiner will rather be impressed by a conceptual answer written in simple language than with one without any conceptual language but written in flowery language.

11. Follow word count For questions, especially in language and literature papers, where word count for the answer is provided, stick to word count. Do not over exceed the word limit. Also do not be a miser and wrap up your answer in very less word count.

12. Be neat and clean Write your answer in a clean and legible handwriting. Not everyone has a beautiful handwriting but anyone can write answers with proper space and punctuation and in a legible handwriting. Remember that if your answer sheet is not clean and handwriting illegible, it will be unfavorable to you. Use margin wherever necessary.

13. Avoid using slangs Remember that written English is different from spoken English. Using slang words or SMS language will be counted as spelling mistake and you will be penalized for the same.

Always draw diagrams with pencil with a proper labelling in block letters.
Recheck for all logics and calculations.
Underline keywords of the answers.

Read chapters comprehensively without skipping any content (boxes glossary included).
Make a flow chart of (only names) imp dates, events, people.
Write a very short summary of each imp episode/ policy etc (50 to 60 words only).
Map work need to be taken seriously and practised.
After going through the course, prepare the previous year’s papers.
During the exam time try to follow the sequence of question paper.
Tick mark the questions that you have attempted.
For 1 mark question only 1 point or 1 word and for 3 mark question 3 points with explanation and for 5 marks 5 points with explanation and write the sub points with black pen.
Do the map work in the map only and do not do it in the answer sheet and use the pointed pencils for that.
Follow the instructions properly.

Overview- English Paper Class 10

English Paper Class 10 is of 80 marks stretching for 3 hours. 20 marks are awarded for internal assessment. The entire paper is divided into three sections:

Section A which tests your reading skills. (20 marks)

Section B that tests your writing skills with grammar. (30 marks)

Section C wherein questions are raised from literature textbooks and include the supplementary reading test. (30 marks)

Before we discuss a few tips to score better in English Paper for Class 10, let us first see what subjects or topics are covered in the English Board Examination:

Subjects, Topics and Pattern in Detail

Section A (Reading skills)

Section A includes multiple-choice questions from a philosophical passage in general which is 10 marks.

It also includes another passage-based on facts and figures and is of 10 marks in total.

The reading skills also cover extracts from prose or drama based on your prescribed textbook. Another extract is based on poetry. Both are questions that carry five marks each.

The portion is not devoid of grammar; questions carrying 10 marks in total are put up covering tenses, modals, subject-verb concord, statements, commands and requests, questions, determiners and reported speech.

A few topics have been reduced from the syllabus for board examination 2021. Initially, the paper also touched on questions covering passive voice, nouns, adverbs, relatives (clauses) as well as prepositions.

Sections B (Writing skills)

Section B consists of two questions carrying 5 marks each. One question includes a formal letter not exceeding 100-120 words.

The other question includes penning down an analytical paragraph based on the given data, chart, clue, or outline. The word limit should not exceed 100-120 words.

Section C (Literature)

The literature portion includes short and long answer questions. There are six short answer questions wherein one has to answer 4 questions in total. Each answer should not exceed 30-40 words. Questions are asked from the prescribed textbooks from CBSE.

There are another set of six short answer questions that must be answered within a word limit of 40-50 words. These questions again are put up from the prescribed textbooks. Students need to answer just 4 questions out of 6.

Long answer type questions carry five marks each and are to be answered within 100-120 words. These questions are put up from the prescribed textbooks.

Start prepping up at least a month before for English instead of studying at the 11th hour to avoid confusion.
Focus on reading skills, read at least two paragraphs daily to improve comprehension skills.
Set a time limit for reading, start with 15 minutes and reduce to 10 the next week.
Write answers on your own, instead of mere copying. Also, pen down a few lines on topics that you find relevant.
The regular habit of writing will enhance your speed and will develop a flow.
Learn 5 new words daily including their synonyms to improve your vocabulary and quality of answers.
Prepare a chart of letters, compositions and all the important topics so that you don’t forget the correct format.
Read your textbooks thoroughly. Remember the names of chapters and their authors/poets with correct spellings.

CBSE Class 10 English Exam Pattern 2024

The CBSE Class 10 English (Language & Literature) question paper had 11 questions for 80 marks. The time allowed to write the paper was 3 hours. All questions were compulsory with some questions having internal choices.
