But recently a change has been made and now the game consists of 60 minutes that divides into three-quarters of 20 minutes each.

History of hockey in India: Taught by the British, India conquered the world

Introduced in the Indian army during British rule, hockey attracted the masses so much so that India won a hat-trick of gold medals not once but twice.

Among the world’s premier sports with an Olympic legacy and featuring blue riband events like the World Cup, Champions Trophy and FIH Pro League, field hockey traces its roots back to the 16th century.

One of the most ancient games in the world -- a crude form of the sport was played in Egypt some 4,000 years ago -- the history of hockey can be traced back to 1527 in Scotland. Back then, it was called ‘hokie’ – where players hit around a small ball with sticks.

However, the first version of modern-day field hockey was developed by the British sometime between the late 18th and early 19th century. It was introduced as a popular school game then and made its way to the Indian army during British rule in the 1850s.

The availability of large plots of land as playing fields and the uncomplicated nature of equipment meant that hockey gradually became the popular sport of choice among children and young adults in India, with the country’s first hockey club being formed in then Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1855.

In the next few decades, national competitions like the Beighton Cup in Calcutta and Aga Khan tournament in Bombay (now Mumbai) popularised the sport further, especially in erstwhile provinces of Bombay and Punjab.

There were talks of forming a hockey association in India in 1907 and 1908, but it didn’t materialise. The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) was only formed in 1925, one year after the formation of the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

The IHF organised its first international tour in 1926 to New Zealand, where the Indian hockey men’s team played 21 matches and won 18. The tournament saw the emergence of a young Dhyan Chand , who would go on to become arguably the best hockey player the world has ever seen.

After a rocky relationship with the Olympic Games until 1924 -- hockey was only played in 1908 and 1920 and dropped for the other editions -- the presence of a global sports body (FIH) ensured that hockey gained permanent Olympic status starting Amsterdam 1928.

The Indian Hockey Federation applied and earned an FIH membership in 1927, thus ensuring that the Indian hockey team would play its first Olympics in 1928.

It was the beginning of a legacy - decorated with eight gold medals - a record till today.

Dominating the Olympics

The Indian hockey team clinched the Olympic gold medal in its first attempt in 1928. India played five matches, scoring 29 goals and conceding none, with Dhyan Chand scoring 14 of them.

The hockey wizard became the cornerstone of the Indian hockey team as it won two more gold medals in 1932 and 1936, completing a hat-trick of Olympic hockey golds. Dhyan Chand was made captain in 1936 in what would prove to be his final Olympic Games.

When the Olympics returned after World War II in 1948, India found a new genius in the legendary Balbir Singh Sr as he steered them to a second hat-trick of Olympic gold medals in 1948, 1952, and 1956, this time as an independent nation. The period was one of the most significant in the history of hockey in India.

While Pakistan halted the gold run in the final at the 1960 Rome Olympics, India would ascend to the top step at Tokyo 1964. However, it was apparent that India’s domination of the sport was weakening.

The Indian hockey team had won silver at the 1958 and 1962 Asian Games, before finally winning gold in the 1966 edition. However, India only managed a bronze at Mexico 1968, in what was then their lowest finish in the Olympics.

The 1970s: Women’s team goes international

Hockey expanded its reach beyond the Olympics with the first Hockey World Cup held in 1971 in Spain. Though Pakistan beat Spain to win the title and India finished third, the sport was steadily gaining popularity in Europe, and innovations were underway.

India did manage another bronze at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, before making the World Cup final in 1973, where they lost to the Netherlands.

While India’s representation in global hockey was largely restricted to the men, the women’s team made its first appearance in international competition at the inaugural women’s Hockey World Cup in 1974, finishing a creditable fourth.

There seemed to be an upturn when the men’s team won its only World Cup title in 1975.

But the 1976 Montreal Olympics was the first to be played on astroturf – artificial grass fields specially curated for the sport - and the men’s Indian hockey team finished seventh.

It ended India’s Olympic podium run for the first time while the women’s team mustered a similar finish at the 1978 World Cup.

In this decade, the men’s team also ended up with three consecutive Asian Games silver medals in 1970, 1974, and 1978.

1980s-2008: A period of stagnation

The 1980s actually began well for the Indian hockey teams.

The men’s team took advantage of a depleted field to win their eighth Olympic gold at Moscow 1980 while the women’s team finished fourth in what was the first edition of women’s hockey at the Olympics.

At the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, where women’s hockey was played for the first time, the women’s Indian hockey team clinched a historic gold at home while the men’s team won silver.

However, there were no more accolades forthcoming after this period.

India were slow to take to the astroturfs, with local players still mostly playing on natural grass fields, which meant that the Indian hockey teams fell short at global events.

Neither the men nor the women were able to make the semi-finals at the World Cups or the (only men’s) Champions Trophy, with their medals restricted to a bronze each at the 1986 Asian Games.

Dhanraj Pillay's debut for the Indian hockey team in 1989 breathed new life into the sport as India boasted of a global superstar once more.

However, without adequate support, Pillay was unable to inspire a wave of success for the Indian hockey team, though he almost single-handedly ended India’s Asian Games gold drought with a stellar individual campaign in 1998.

The women also continued to struggle globally through this period, though they won silver at the 1998 Asian Games.

The introduction of hockey at the Commonwealth Games in 1998 provided another platform for global hockey. The Indian men’s and women’s teams finished fourth in the inaugural edition.

The women’s Indian hockey team then went on to win gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, an edition where the men were unable to qualify. The women then won silver in the 2006 edition, as the men could only manage sixth place, and bronze at the 2006 Asian Games.

The decline of Indian hockey hit rock bottom in 2008 when the men’s team, for the first time since 1928, failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

Revival of Indian hockey

After the disappointment of 2008, the men’s Indian hockey team responded by returning to the podium at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, winning silver and the 2010 Asian Games, where they won bronze.

The men’s Indian hockey team qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. Though India ended last, it represented a small bit of progress.

The men also qualified for Rio 2016 but this time, it was the women who stole the spotlight as they qualified for their first Olympic Games in 36 years.

The women’s Indian hockey team won silver at the 2018 Asian Games.

In the years since, Indian hockey seems to have found its feet again.

The women’s team, led by Rani Rampal, won silver at the 2018 Asian Games, achieving their best ranking of ninth in the world the same year.

The men’s Indian hockey team has imbibed an attacking philosophy under new head coach Graham Reid and young captain Manpreet Singh.

The men’s team played its first FIH Pro League campaign in 2020, winning games against the best in the world like Belgium, Australia and the Netherlands.

At Tokyo 2020, the men’s hockey team ended a 41-year Olympic medal drought with a bronze medal after a thrilling win against Germany in the playoff.

The women’s team, in only its third Olympic appearance, showed tremendous grit to finish fourth, narrowly losing out on the bronze medal to Great Britain.

India women also achieved one of their most famous victories when they knocked out favourites Australia in the quarter-finals

Cut to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, India won the silver and bronze in the men's and women's tournaments, respectively. At the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the Indian men's hockey team won the gold medal while the women finished with a bronze.

Both the men’s and women’s teams are formidable contenders on the global stage and Indian hockey is now in a position to reclaim the glory of old.

Field Hockey is the National Sport of our Country. The designation of ‘National Sport’ is either designated on the basis of the popularity of a Game, or on the basis of the Game’s historical background. Hockey has a long-standing rich legacy, and this fact also gives this Sport the credibility of being the ‘National Game’ of our Country, India. Added to this, another obvious reason for designating this Sport as the National Sport of the Country, for the pride that is always evoked by the Countrymen.

In order to play this Game, this Game is required to be conducted either on plain grass or on a mat-like material called the turf. Playing field Hockey is a popularly played Sport in our Country, which is played by forming teams. This Game is played on grass, on artificial or watered turf, or on synthetic fields. The team has ten players in total and a Goalkeeper.

Hockey is played with a curved stick in the form of the letter ‘J’. The aim here is to move the ball forward to the Goal post with the curved end of the stick and thereby scoring a Goal. The strikers who play this Game are exceptionally skilled at hitting the targets, this will help them to shoot their shots successfully and make them enter the Goal post. While the Goalkeeper gets the responsibility of hurdling and stopping the Goals so that they can stop the opposite team from scoring.

Hockey is a Sport that requires a lot of practice and dedication. The Game is played usually on a rectangular field, and this is considered to be an outdoor Sport. The Goalkeeper stands near the Goal post wearing a heavily padded jersey and helmets also with a curved Hockey stick. The Goalkeeper is required to wear protective suits because the ball, striking with the Hockey stick, rushes towards the Goal post at a highly accelerated speed, if the Goalkeeper does not wear a padded suit this may cause severe injuries to the Goalkeeper.

The Game starts with a toss between the captains of the two distinct teams. The captain who wins the toss will either select his side of the field where his team will play or he chooses to pass. The Game is played for 75 minutes in a single session. There are two rounds of each thirty-five minutes and one break in between the two sessions. The interval time is used for medications, strategic planning, also for treatment.

My Favorite Game Hockey Essay in English

Hockey is ranked as my favourite Game. The Game is the most interesting outdoor Game in my view, as there is too much life and energy going on in the Game. Hockey keeps all the players busy, both physically as well as mentally. This is a very popular Game all over the world and considered as the National Sport of my Country, India.

In this Sport, there are two teams who play against each other and they both try to score by posting the Goal in the Goalpost. At present, there are different forms of Hockey i.e.- Field Hockey, Ice Hockey, Roller Hockey, Sledge Hockey, and even Street Hockey.

India made an impressive record with many Olympic gold medals, in the year 1928-1956, this is known as the Golden Era of Hockey in India. India won 6 consecutive gold medals in this Olympic Games.

Anze Kopitar’s overtime goal lifts Kings past Oilers in Game 2 thriller

Kings center Anze Kopitar scores the game-winning goal in overtime of Game 2 against the Edmonton Oilers

The NHL regular season is like an anthology of 82 stories, each with their own beginning, middle and end. The playoffs, however, are like a novel, each game a new chapter that builds on the last one.

And Kings coach Jim Hiller says he likes it that way, especially after his team took the book in a new direction Wednesday with Anze Kopitar scoring 2:07 into overtime to give his team a 5-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers, evening their first-round playoff series with the Oilers at a victory apiece heading into Game 3 on Friday at Crypto.com Arena.

“We all love the playoffs because we play the game, you review the game, adjustments are made and you just keep moving along,” he said. “From a coach’s perspective, we all enjoy that part of the game, being able just to focus on a single team.”

Hiller got many those adjustments right in Game 2, juggling his line combinations, flooding the neutral zone with bodies and keeping Edmonton’s lightning-quick forwards from making the dangerous rushes up the ice they used to dominate Game 1. It then fell to Kopitar to make that pay off, scoring on a strange play that started with a poor pass from Mikey Anderson skipping along the boards in the Kings’ end. Quinton Byfield was able to get a stick on it near center ice, redirecting the puck to a streaking Kopitar, who beat Oiler goalie Stuart Skinner cleanly.

“It was kind of a wacky play,” said Kopitar, who assisted on his team’s first two goals. “You just try to read the play and sometimes you’re in the right spots, sometimes you’re severely in the wrong spots. Tonight I was in the right spot a couple of times. I guess and it worked out.”

EDMONTON, CANADA - MARCH 28: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins #93 of the Edmonton Oilers battles.

Why Kings vs. Oilers is one of the NHL’s truly great rivalries

The Kings and Oilers aren’t “Original Six” teams, but they’ve established a rivalry decades in the making forged by NHL stars and playoff showdowns.

April 22, 2024

Worked out well enough to guarantee the best-of-seven series will return to Canada after Sunday’s Game 4 in Los Angeles.

“One game for us, one game for them,” Hiller said. “And now we go to L.A.”

But it wasn’t easy. Although the Oilers never led, they erased a two-goal Kings lead in the second period and a one-goal deficit early in the third in a game that was wide open for large parts of the final period.

“That’s just playoff play hockey for you,” said Byfield, whose assist on the game-winner was his second of the game. “There’s a lot of momentum swings in a game like that and it’s just how well you can handle the ups and downs and how well you can stay sustain it.”

This is the third time in as many seasons the Kings and Oilers have split the first two games of a first-round playoff series in Edmonton. The teams went on to split the next two games in L.A. as well, although the Oilers wound up eliminating the Kings from the playoffs both times.

That’s the part of the story Hiller wants to rewrite.

The Kings took control early in Game 2 with Adrian Kempe’s second goal of the series, off an assist from Kopitar, giving them a 1-0 lead 3:19 into the game. Less than than six minutes later the Kings killed off the first of two penalties they would survive on the night, which was equally significant since Edmonton was three for four on the power play in Game 1.

Kempe then doubled the lead at 14:57, again off an assist from Kopitar, before defensemen Brett Kulak and Drew Doughty traded goals in the final three minutes of the first period. Kulak got Edmonton on the board with a wicked slap shot from the top of the left circle; Doughty restored the Kings’ two-goal lead 29 seconds later, slipping the puck through Skinner’s legs from the edge of the crease.

The momentum swung heavily toward Edmonton after the intermission with Dylan Holloway taking advantage of a Kings’ turnover in the neutral zone to cut the deficit to a goal by banging home a left-handed shot from the top of slot at 7:51 of the second period. Less than three minutes later Zach Hyman, who had a hat trick in Game 1, scored his fourth goal of the series on a power play and the game was even.

Kings’ penalty kill, a strength all year, becomes weakness in deflating loss to Oilers

In Game 1 on Monday, the Kings’ penalty kill produced only self-inflicted wounds, allowing the Oilers to score three times in a 7-4 Edmonton win.

April 23, 2024

Kings goaltender Cam Talbot managed to keep it that way with a sprawling save on Leon Draisaitl during an Edmonton power play in the final minute of the second period.

“That’s as good a save as you’re going to see,” Hiller said. “It probably made the difference in the hockey game in the end.”

Added Kopitar: “He kept us in it.”

That allowed Kevin Fiala to put the Kings ahead 1:46 into the final period with a rocket of a one-timer from the right boards. But again the lead was short-lived, with Holloway’s second goal of the night tying the score at 3:23 of the final period, sending the game to overtime and setting the stage for the game-winner from the Kings’ captain, a two-time Stanley Cup champion who, at 36, is the second-oldest player on the roster.

“Somebody’s got to score a big goal,” Hiller said. “We needed this game, clearly. To see Kopi get that one at the end, it was great.

“But I can tell you for me personally, for a guy who’s done as much as he has, to get another overtime game-winning goal was special.”

It figures to make a compelling chapter to a playoff story that’s far from complete.

Josh Morrissey remembers the city coming to life before his eyes.

A nine-year-old Flames fan in the spring of 2004, he was captivated by every Jarome Iginla chance and Miikka Kiprusoff save during Calgary’s run to the Stanley Cup Final.

“It was just an awesome experience,” said Morrissey, now a star defenseman for the Winnipeg Jets. “Living and dying on every win and loss.”

Hockey fans across Canada are once again preparing for the annual thrill and torment that arrives with the playoffs. The Jets, Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs are in the 16-team field that will open play on Saturday.

Morrisey remembers the energy in his hometown as the Flames advanced through three grueling rounds to the final.

“That’s the best part about Canadian teams doing well in the playoffs … it means so much,” he told The Canadian Press. “A special time of the year. The longer you go, the more that excitement ramps up. It can really mean a lot to the cities. I know as a kid, it meant a ton to me.”

Canada’s Cup drought dates to Montreal’s triumph in 1993, an agonizingly long time for fans in the nation that loves hockey more than any other. The Canucks (twice), Flames, Oilers, Canadiens and Ottawa Senators have all made it to the final since only to fall short. The four Canadian clubs in this year’s bracket are the most to make the cut in a normal campaign since 2017.

Vancouver defenseman Carson Soucy, who grew up near Edmonton, remembers the Oilers’ march to the 2006 final.

“That was when they came out with the car window flags,” he said. “They were everywhere … those were popular that year.”

Jets defenseman Brenden Dillon grew up a Canucks fan and was in the city when the team lost to Boston in Game 7 of the 2011 final.

“There really is nothing like playoff hockey (in Canada),” he said. “Everyone bonds together.”

Maple Leafs defenseman Simon Benoit, who grew up in suburban Montreal, recalls watching the Canadiens go on a couple playoff runs when he was a kid.

“Having a chance here to play for that Cup, it’s pretty special,” he said of this opportunity with Toronto. “I’m pretty excited about it. When the time comes, I’ll be ready.”

Canucks rcoach Rick Tocchet won the Cup as a player with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992. He said the team that brings hockey’s grail home will have bragging rights for a long time.

“It’s going to be a hell of a party,” he said. “You might be Canada’s team after that Stanley Cup. There’s a lot at stake for the Canadian teams that are in. As a Canadian, it could be huge. That would be the ultimate, right?”

Like so many Canadian fans over the last 30 years, Morrissey was bitterly disappointed when the Flames lost Game 7 to the Tampa Bay Lightning two decades ago.

“I remember being just absolutely devastated,” he said.

But there were plenty of good times along the way.

“My friends and I from that era still talk about some of the games,” Morrissey continued. “It lives on for a long time.”

The glow of a Cup victory would last even longer.

250 Words Essay on Fifa World Cup

Origins and evolution of the fifa world cup.

The FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament, was first proposed by FIFA president Jules Rimet in 1928. The inaugural event took place in Uruguay in 1930, with 13 teams participating. Over the years, the tournament has grown exponentially, with the number of participating teams increasing to 32 in 1998.

Significance of the World Cup

The World Cup’s significance extends beyond the realm of sports. It serves as a platform for nations to unite and showcase their cultural, social, and political identities. The tournament’s global reach also provides an opportunity for countries to enhance their international reputation and stimulate economic growth.

Controversies and Challenges

Despite its popularity, the World Cup has not been devoid of controversies. Issues such as corruption within FIFA, concerns over the treatment of workers in host countries, and the environmental impact of such a large-scale event have sparked debates. These challenges highlight the need for FIFA to prioritize ethical practices and sustainability in its operations.

The Future of the World Cup

Looking ahead, the World Cup is set to evolve further. The 2026 tournament will see an expansion to 48 teams, reflecting the growing global interest in football. Furthermore, FIFA is exploring ways to enhance the tournament’s inclusivity and sustainability, thus ensuring that the World Cup continues to inspire and unite people worldwide.

In conclusion, the FIFA World Cup is much more than a football tournament. It’s a global event that brings nations together, promotes cultural exchange, and creates significant socio-economic impacts. However, it’s essential for FIFA to address the challenges and controversies associated with the tournament to ensure its long-term success and positive influence.

500 Words Essay on Fifa World Cup

Introduction.

The FIFA World Cup, an international football tournament, is arguably the most prestigious sporting event in the world. Organized by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the World Cup has been held every four years since its inaugural tournament in 1930, excluding 1942 and 1946 due to World War II.

Historical Overview

The first World Cup was hosted by Uruguay in 1930, with the host nation emerging as champions. The tournament was initially dominated by South American teams, with Uruguay and Brazil achieving early success. However, the post-war era saw a shift in power, with European nations such as England, Germany, and Italy establishing themselves as major forces. The tournament has grown in scope and scale over the decades, expanding from an initial 13 teams to the current 32, with a further expansion to 48 teams planned for 2026.

Significance and Impact

The World Cup is more than just a football tournament. It has socio-economic implications and can influence national identities. Hosting the World Cup can boost a country’s economy by attracting tourism, creating jobs, and prompting infrastructural development. However, it can also highlight social issues, as seen with Brazil in 2014, where public discontent over government spending on the tournament led to widespread protests.

On a cultural level, the World Cup can foster a sense of national unity. The tournament’s global reach allows countries to showcase their culture on the world stage, and success in the tournament can evoke strong feelings of national pride.

Controversies

Despite its popularity, the World Cup has not been without controversy. Allegations of corruption within FIFA have often overshadowed the tournament. The decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar raised questions about FIFA’s bidding process, worker’s rights, and the feasibility of hosting a summer tournament in extreme heat.

Notable Moments

The World Cup has provided many memorable moments. Diego Maradona’s infamous “Hand of God” goal in 1986, Brazil’s dominance in the early 2000s, and Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Brazil in 2014 are just a few examples. These moments have contributed to the World Cup’s status as a global spectacle.

The FIFA World Cup, with its blend of sport, culture, and politics, is a unique event. Despite its controversies, the tournament’s ability to unite people from diverse backgrounds around a shared love of football is unparalleled. As the World Cup continues to evolve, it will undoubtedly remain a significant fixture in the global sporting calendar.
