புதிதாக என்ன தொழில் தொடங்கலாம்?Business Ideas in Tamil..!

The key points of the business plan for a fish market

What's the business model of a fish market, business model of a fish market.

A fish market model revolves around selling a variety of fresh seafood products to customers. Revenue is generated through product sales, potentially offering additional services such as filleting or seafood platters.

The business model focuses on sourcing fresh and sustainable seafood, providing exceptional customer service, ensuring product quality and hygiene, effective marketing to target seafood enthusiasts, and building strong customer relationships based on trust and seafood expertise.

Success depends on maintaining relationships with fishermen or suppliers, delivering freshness and variety, fostering positive customer experiences and recommendations, and continuously adapting to customer preferences and industry trends in the seafood market.

Business model ≠ Business plan

Remember, "business plan" and "business model" are not the same thing.

A business model shows how a company operates and turns a profit.

In a business plan, you adopt the Business Model Canvas as a straightforward tool to showcase the fundamental elements of your business model.

Rest assured, we provide a Business Model Canvas in our business plan for a fish market .

How do you identify the market segments of a fish market?

Market segmentation for your fish market involves dividing your potential customers into different groups based on their seafood preferences, demographics, and culinary interests.

These categories may include factors such as seafood enthusiasts, fine dining establishments, home cooks, or customers seeking sustainable seafood options.

By segmenting your market, you can offer a variety of seafood products and services that cater to each segment's specific requirements. For example, you might provide a wide selection of fresh and exotic fish for seafood enthusiasts, offer premium and high-quality seafood options for fine dining establishments, provide convenient seafood meal kits and recipes for home cooks, or specialize in sourcing and selling sustainable seafood options for eco-conscious customers.

Market segmentation allows you to effectively target your marketing efforts, source the best seafood products, and build a loyal customer base within each customer segment by providing the seafood products and experiences that align with their preferences and values.

How to conduct a competitor analysis for a fish market?

Without surprise, you won't be the only fish market in your market. There will be other establishments offering a variety of fresh seafood to customers.

To create a successful business plan, it's crucial to thoroughly analyze your competitors. This involves carefully identifying and studying their offer, while also evaluating their strengths and weaknesses.

Explore their weaknesses (such as inconsistent seafood quality, poor freshness control, or inadequate customer service).

Why is it crucial to notice these aspects? Because these weaknesses can impact customer satisfaction when shopping at fish markets. By addressing these points, you can offer a wide selection of fresh and high-quality seafood, provide knowledgeable staff assistance and guidance, and maintain excellent hygiene and product handling, positioning your fish market as a trusted and preferred source for seafood enthusiasts and seafood lovers.

It's what we call competitive advantages—prioritize building them to gain a competitive edge.

Here are some examples of competitive advantages for a fish store: fresh and diverse fish selection, knowledgeable staff, exceptional customer service.

How to draft a SWOT analysis for a fish store?

A SWOT analysis can help identify potential opportunities and challenges when starting a fish market.

As you can guess, there is indeed a completed and editable SWOT matrix in our business plan for a fish market

The strengths for a fish market

When we mention the "S" in SWOT, we mean Strengths, which are the project's positive attributes or capabilities.

For a fish market, potential strengths include a wide selection of fresh seafood, knowledgeable staff, competitive pricing, and a convenient location.

The weaknesses for a fish market

When we mention the "W," we're referring to Weaknesses, which are the weak areas or aspects of the project that need to be improved.

For a fish market, potential weaknesses include a lack of suitable storage space, limited access to fresh fish, high operational costs, and a reliance on a seasonal customer base.

The opportunities for a fish market

The letter "O" in SWOT signifies Opportunities, highlighting the favorable circumstances or chances for the project's growth.

In the case of a fish market, potential opportunities could include expanding into online sales, offering delivery services, introducing a loyalty program, and creating a restaurant.

The threats for a fish market

T stands for Threats in SWOT, representing the external factors or situations that may hinder the project's progress.

How to outline a marketing strategy for a fish store?

You need a marketing strategy in your business plan to attract customers and make sales.

A fish store can appeal to aquarium enthusiasts and pet owners by implementing a targeted marketing approach that showcases the store's diverse selection of fish species, quality aquarium supplies, and expert advice on fish care and maintenance.

Seafood lovers won't shop at your fish market without effective promotion; showcasing the freshness of the seafood, variety of options, and knowledgeable staff is crucial.

Are you implementing effective marketing strategies for your fish store? Consider offering educational content about different fish species or aquarium care on your website or social media, collaborating with local pet stores or aquarium clubs for cross-promotion, and running targeted advertising campaigns to reach fish enthusiasts and hobbyists.

It's okay to feel overwhelmed by the vast world of marketing and communication.

How to build financial projections for a fish store?

A successful business plan requires comprehensive financial data in order to accurately forecast future performance.

As part of your business planning process, you'll be required to predict the revenue for your fish market.

Fishing for Success: The Fish Kiosk Entrepreneurs of Tamil Nadu

Image

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Marthandam fish kiosk is one of the 12 fish kiosks supported by the Tamil Nadu Department of Fisheries across coastal Tamil Nadu as part of the World Bank-supported Coastal Disaster Risk Reduction Project.
  • The initiative is directed at widows from fishing families who have lost their husbands at sea in isolated incidents or during disasters.
  • The kiosks earn up to 6,000 INR per day in revenues, with a profit margin of 20 percent to 30 percent – a vast improvement in income and quality of life for most of these women.

It's a hot day in Marthandam, a town in Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari district near the Kerala border, just a few kilometres from the coast. As evening sets in and the sun embarks on its final descent towards the western horizon, a dusty street near Marthandam junction comes alive. Men, women and children swarm out to kirana stores (grocery shops), vegetable vendors, fruit sellers and various other commercial establishments.

Amidst all the shops on the street, one particular establishment stands out, even to the casual eye. With its storefront painted in bright blue and green and a big cut-out of a merry fish hanging over the entrance, Marthandam's fish kiosk is unmissable.

A gaggle of people stand at the kiosk's counter. Inside, three women – Celine Mary, Mary Shanti and Chandra – move about busily. It's 6 pm and peak hour for the kiosk. Business is brisk.

“Tastes like home food,” smiles a customer, when Celine Mary hands him a packet of fish curry and rice.

As the man pays up and leaves, another customer steps forward. He points to a bottle of fish pickle at the counter and asks if he can get 100 of those before the end of the week.

“I am going to Dubai next week. This pickle is very popular with the Indian community over there,” he explains.

Another customer waits as Mary Shanti packs 500 grams of seer fish, while another asks if the 'fish fry', a preparation popular with customers in the area, is ready yet.

The women would stay busy for the next three hours.

A new beginning for those who have lost everything

The Marthandam fish kiosk is one of the 12 fish kiosks supported by the Tamil Nadu Department of Fisheries (TNDoF) across coastal Tamil Nadu as part of the World Bank-supported Coastal Disaster Risk Reduction Project (CDRRP) . The initiative is directed at widows from fishing families who have lost their husbands at sea in isolated incidents or during disasters such as the 2004 Tsunami that claimed the lives of more than 8,000 people in Tamil Nadu and severely affected the livelihoods of thousands of coastal households.

Under the initiative, four or five women come together to run a kiosk. The Project provides them with a furnished space, shelves, and equipment such as freezers. Trainings are organized for the women in various technical areas like preserving fish and other perishables, maintaining hygiene, and preparing value-added products such as pickles and masalas (spices) . The women have also been linked to an entrepreneurship training program conducted by the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI).

Image

Seaweed farming at Mandapam

The first few kiosks opened in August last year, with the core offering being fresh and dry fish. Soon, the women realized that they could branch out into other offerings such as freshly prepared fish-based meals and snacks, and earn bigger margins. Irudaya Mary, who runs one of the two kiosks in Rameshwaram with three other women, decided to stock shelf-stable products such as fish pickles and masalas produced by a local Self-Help Group, and discovered that they were an instant hit with the customers. Other kiosks quickly followed suit.

The women ensured that whatever they sold was hygienic and of good quality.  Word about the kiosks spread, and before they knew it, they had a loyal clientele.

“Only half a kilometre away, there is a fish market, with several vendors selling fish,” says Mary Shanti. “Despite this, we attract regular customers. This is because people know that we maintain hygiene and preserve the fish well. They know that they will find more varieties of fish here than in the market. That is how we are different from the fish market.”

“That is our USP,” chips in Chandra with a smile, flaunting a business term she picked up at the EDI training program.

The kiosks earn up to Rs. 6,000 per day in revenues, with a profit margin of 20 percent to 30 percent – a vast improvement in income and quality of life for most of these women.

For Celine Mary, the kiosk represents a turning point in a life marked by crushing poverty and back-breaking struggle that was thrust upon her when she lost her husband 14 years ago to a disease he contracted due to spending weeks on end at sea. Suddenly, she was left with three young children and absolutely no idea of how to provide for them.

“I began by working in others’ homes as a help,” says Celine Mary. “After a while, I decided to start selling fish. Every day, I would haul a huge basket of fish on my head and go door-to-door for hours together in this merciless heat. I did this for 10 years. Today, thanks to the livelihood program of the Department of Fisheries (DoF), I no longer have to go knocking on people’s doors. Customers come to our kiosk instead. I earn a lot more than earlier too!”

The big picture - making fishing households resilient

However, depleting fish stocks on account of overfishing is forcing fishermen to venture further and further into the sea in search of a decent catch. These trips frequently span 500 nautical miles or more, which means fishermen spend as many as 20 days at sea. This significantly ups the risks, especially for the small and marginal fishermen.

In September 2016, 19 Indian fishermen were arrested by the British navy near Diego Garcia. Diego Garcia is an island on the other side of the equator almost 1000 nautical miles away from the Indian coast. Earlier this year, Pakistani authorities released several Indian fishermen they had arrested in Pakistani waters. Some among them were from Kerala.

One of CDRRP's objectives is to build resilience in fishing families by reducing their income dependence on fishing. The fish kiosk initiative is one among several women-focused initiatives aimed at diversification of livelihoods for fishing households.

An initiative in Kanyakumari district has trained 25 women in developing innovative crafts products using coconut shells, and selling them in national and international markets through local entrepreneurs. Another initiative that is being implemented in multiple locations across the coast has trained more than 100 women in seaweed cultivation, provided them with necessary equipment and know-how, and linked them to the market by facilitating purchase agreements with private sector buyers. An innovative pilot by TNDoF has developed an intensive 90-day program in partnership with Alagappa University's Study Circle to coach youth from fishing households to clear the Coast Guard entrance exam. Of the 36 boys who participated in the first batch, four have already attempted the entrance exam, and two have cleared it. Several students are being sounded out by hotels, adventure sports bodies and other private organizations to work with them as lifeguards or trainers.

Image

“Women are the worst affected by the risks and uncertainties of fishing. CDRRP's livelihood initiatives have shown significant promise in helping them diversify their income streams,” says Anup Karanth, Task Team Leader, CDRRP, World Bank.

What’s next for the fish kiosk entrepreneurs?

What's next? Ask them this question and the women reel off a bunch of ideas – catering, more shelf-stable products, multipurpose packaging equipment, home delivery and so on.

“To graduate to the next level, the women now need the tools to turn their operation into an enterprise. This means learning how to write a business plan, how to project costs and revenues, how to assess risk, how to use available government schemes to raise capital,” says Vinayak Ghatate, Senior Rural Development Specialist, World Bank.

This was one of the several ideas that were discussed at a brainstorming meeting between the project team and livelihood experts from the World Bank early this year.

“There is great demand for such fish-based products in other parts of the country. There is no reason why we cannot emulate the Amul model and create an umbrella brand to take these products to the entire country,” says Rajendra Ratnoo, Project Director for the FIMSUL-2 (Fisheries Management for Sustainable Livelihoods) initiatives under CDRRP.

The project team has identified Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Cooperation as a possible front-end agency that can brand and market these products. A detailed market study is being planned. A scale-up plan is being developed.

“Bigger things lie in store for the entrepreneurial women of coastal Tamil Nadu and the Project is a testimony to the collaborative efforts of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the World Bank that started way back in 2005 after the devastating Tsunami,” added Deepak Singh, Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist of World Bank.

Harvesting and marketing tips for fish farming

Marketing is the easiest part of the fish farming business. There are many markets available where you can sell your fish products and there is a huge demand for all types of fish in the market.

Establishment of Fish Processing Parks in Tamil Nadu – The government has announced to set up fish processing parks in 13 coastal cities of Tamil Nadu to develop adequate infrastructure facilities to promote exports.

Modernization of fish markets – Fish markets are being set up at 19 locations with the help of NFDB and the state government and modern hygiene facilities are being provided to the consumers to provide healthy and good quality fish to the fishermen. This will help them to get a fair price for their fish.

Coastal aquaculture has been recognized as an important source of employment and food security to meet the food security and nutritional needs of our growing population. In the context of increasing food security in the modern world, fish and fish products are considered among the safest foods produced by animals. The second-longest coastal region in the country is Tamil Nadu with abundant natural resources for coastal aquaculture.

Tamil Nadu has a coastal length of 1,076 km (13% of the country’s coastline), 1.9 million sq km of EEZ (9.4% of India’s EEZ), and a continental shelf of approximately 41,412 sq km and is one of the leading states in India. The marine fish production of the state is 4.97 lakh tonnes. In coastal waters, 38,779 traditional crafts and 5893 machine boats take advantage of the fishing potential.

Tamil Nadu has an area of 3.83 lakh hectares. Efficient inland water resources include reservoirs, large irrigation tanks, small irrigation tanks, short seasonal tanks, ponds, streams, backwaters, and derelict water bodies. With the increase in demand for fish, there is a need to substantially increase the total fish production of the state from all available fishing resources.

However, aquaculture is emerging as a significant activity in rural areas to increase fish production and income. Integration of fish culture with agriculture has proved to be an option to increase the productivity of the unit through the aquaculture system. The government is determined to triple domestic fish production in the coming years.

The Government of Tamil Nadu is providing a 100% subsidy for the construction of farm ponds. The scheme was launched three years ago and was well-received by farmers in the drought-hit Shiva Ganga district. The ponds helped increase groundwater in the area and divert available rainwater for irrigation.

The government provides between Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 1 lakh depending on certain principles. This gives three benefits to the farmers. In addition to obtaining water for cultivation, it also helps in raising fish and raising good livestock grass on the banks of ponds. An official of the Agriculture Engineering Department said that 1680 ponds have already been constructed in Shiv Ganga.

Fresh SeaPack Fish

The Fresh SeaPack Fish Company is located in Chicago, Illinois. The company is owned by Jerome Packson, a former restaurateur who now oversees the supply of fish and seafood into the finest Chicago restaurants. The company sources locally-raised fish, vacuum-packs and seals each filet, and ships the fish to regional and city-wide restaurants. With one-day service, the fish is as fresh as when it was shipped, which offers excellent flavors for consumers.

Jerome Packson established Fresh SeaPack Fish in 2000, when it became apparent the fish supplies coming in from Alaska were being depleted by wild-caught fishermen. This created in him a drive to change the process, so his company could guarantee a “fresh fish” result in restaurants, while processing and packing up to 24 hours in advance of shipment.

Sea & Land Distributors

Sea & Land Distributors are co-owned by brothers, Dean and Dave Lancaster, who have located their distribution company in Suamico, Wisconsin. From this location, vacuum packed fish can be flown to customers within a multi-state area, typically within 4 hours. The distribution company was formed in 2004 by Dean Lancaster, a former sales manager for a fish industry networking company, and Dave Lancaster, a former seafood salesman for the large, well-known fish and fish product provider.

In addition to fish and fish products, Sea & Land Distributors began distributing fresh beef to restaurants and grocery stores. Using the same processes and techniques, the beef filets, steaks, ribs and other choice cuts are sent to regional clients within 4-hours of processing. This addition to the company has resulted in a significant increase in revenue and the addition of staff to cover the beef portion of the business.

Harris Seafood Company

The Harris Seafood Company is a certified “organic and sustainable” seafood distributor, focusing on the Madison region of Wisconsin. Trent Harris is the owner and president of the company, while six employees process and pack seafood for delivery to Madison restaurants. The company was formed in 2021 and has an estimated 100 customers or clients, who are served weekly or monthly with vacuum-packed seafood.

The Harris Seafood Company has plans to open another processing center in Chicago within three years in order to grow the highly successful seafood sales industry into high-end Chicago restaurants. With demand rising, the Harris Seafood Company plans to meet that demand and exceed current company expectations.

  • Fish farming is one of the fastest-growing food production sectors in the world
  • Fish and fish product has huge and increasing demand throughout the globe.
  •  Market demand and price are always high for fish and fish-related products.

  • Different several types of fast-growing fish species are available. Farming those fast-growing fish species ensures rapid returns on your investment.
  • People with other occupations or jobs can also start this business.
  • Bank loans and funding assistance are also available for the fish farming project.

Here are the 7 Steps to Start Fish Farming Business

1. choose the type of fish for farming.

The first thing you must consider while starting fish farming is the type of fish you are going to produce. Below find the most popular types of fish farming business ideas that are presently fetching good returns.

a) Tilapia Fish Farming

Tilapia has become the third most important and popular fish after carp and salmon. High protein content, large size, rapid growth (6 to 7 months to grow to harvest size), and palatability; are the major reasons that make tilapia fish farming highly profitable and popular.

b) Shrimp Farming

Commercial shrimp farming has been developed for more than a century in Southeast Asia. Extensive shrimp farming operation is considered the simplest cultural approach. Market demand is very high and can be initiated on a small-scale basis.

c) Ornamental Fish Farming

Ornamental fishes are colorful, fancy, and generally known as aquarium fish. According to industry experts, the ornamental fish trading industry with a turnover of US $ 6 Billion and an annual growth rate of 8 per cent offers a lot of scope for development.

d) Cat Fish Farming

Commercial catfish farming is very profitable.  Aquaculture farmers can initiate catfish farming alone or combined with other species. Catfish farming can be initiated at a comparatively low cost and on a small-scale basis.

e) Crab Farming

Intensive commercial crab farming can be performed in smaller areas and at greater densities, minimizing land and labor, but the environmental impacts of these techniques can be significant. The mud crab ( Scylla Serrata ) is a promising aquaculture species due to its fast growth and good market acceptability and price.

f) Prawn Farming

The worldwide demand for prawns is increasing highly. A freshwater prawn farm is very similar to a freshwater fish farm. With the help of modern improved technology, one can start prawn farming to meet local and export demand both.

g) Fish Hatchery

A fish hatchery is an artificial place for breeding, hatching, and rearing through the early life stages of animals, finfish, and shellfish. The selection of the right species is important in starting a fish hatchery business.  Some species that are commonly raised in hatcheries include Pacific oysters, shrimp, Indian prawns, Carp fishes, salmon, tilapia, and scallops.

h) Carp Fish Farming

Carp fishes are omnivorous, with a high tendency towards the consumption of animal food, such as water insects, larvae of insects, worms, mollusks, and zooplankton. These food habits play a major role in the profitability of carp farming.

i) Salmon Fish Farming

Salmon farming is the commercial production of salmon from egg to market in a net-cage, pond, or container system. This type of fish is a carnivore. On average it takes two to five kilograms of wild fish (used in feed) to produce one kilogram of farmed salmon.

j) Indoor Fish Farming

An entrepreneur can initiate indoor fish-related farming from the home location with moderate capital investment. You can also integrate an aquaponic system to grow plants with your indoor fish containers and raise fish, vegetables, and herbs at the same time.

In starting a profitable fish farming business you will need to have reasonable financial resources with land and good quality water bodies. You will need to have enough knowledge about the farming process. You will need to procure the necessary equipment and machinery for the business also.

Choosing the right species of fish plays a major role in getting success in the fish farming business. The decision should be based on market demand, maintenance point of view, availability of resources, etc.

2. Understand the Market

Feasibility analysis and business planning are a must before starting a fish farming business. Do intensive market research before getting into fish farming. Understand the local market demand. If you are going to start fish farming for export, then talk to fish processing units prior. Prepare an alternative marketing strategy to rely on.

3. Learn the Skills of Fish Farming

Having skills is important in starting a fish farming business. You can get training from government-run farms that conduct training.

Working at a successful fish farm will also teach you how to perform water quality management, disease control, feeding, marketing, and processing skills.

  • Ensure that you have a continuous source of quality water.
  • Check whether your water temperature is optimal for the fish species reared or not.
  • Ensure easy access to the pond for feeding and harvesting.
  • Test the water in which you are starting fish farming both chemical and bacteriological.
  • Learn about the modern technical method of risk assessment and as well as risk management.
  • Finding reliable suppliers for fish eggs, fingerlings, and fish feed is very crucial in the fish farming business.
  • Figure out the legal compliance and permission needed to start a fish farming business in your locality.

4. Create a Fish Farming Business Plan

If you are looking forward to establishing a profitable fish, creating a business plan document is important. A business plan essentially is a business document that works as a roadmap for future operational activities of the company.

Additionally, it is the single most important tool to arrange funds from investors. Some of the basic issues that your fish farming business plan must address are the following:

  • Startup and recurring costs to run a fish farm.
  • Your target customers.
  • Pricing plan.
  • Profit margins.
  • How and where do you plan to sell fish.

5. Calculate the Cost of Starting a Fish Farming Business

Two types of capital investment are broadly included in this farming business. One is the fixed capital cost and the other one is the operating cost. Capital cost includes land & building, crafting ponds, vehicles for transport, plumbing arrangements, several tanks, oxygen meters, etc.

Operating costs include purchasing eggs or fingerlings, fish feed, electricity, fuel, labor, chemical, medicine, tax, insurance, telephone, transportation, and other maintenance cost involved.

Before getting into the business, carefully prepare a detailed cost calculation of your proposed fish-related farming project. Calculations will be different as per the types of fish you are choosing for fish farming. And also according to your desired output and total land area.

6. Choose the Right Location

The most critical factor in fash farming is having a continuous flow of water. If you are planning to start in a village area, locating a pond with a good water source is a must. On the other hand, you must have access to the municipality water source, if the location is in the city or town area.

7. What equipment is Needed for Fish Farming?

Another important aspect is the procurement of certain types of equipment. Some of the basic tools and equipment needed in fish farming are the following:

  • Aeration devices
  • Nets/ Seine Reels
  • Handling and Grading Equipment
  • Fish counters

Fish is one of the main components of animal protein in a diet.  There is increasing popularity of having fish as food worldwide boosting has boosted the fish farming business globally.

Today, no longer is business management software only for the large corporation, but increasingly, vendors are focused on developing powerful small business management software solutions specifically tailored to meet the expanding needs of smaller-sized organizations.

Small business management software includes software for Accounting, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Customer Relationship Management (CRM) , and Email Marketing. This article will examine some real life examples of organizations that have taken their business operations to the next level after having successfully implemented some unique small business management software solutions.

A. Accounting Software Case Study: Bascome Trim and Upholstery and Intuit QuickBooks Enterprise

Bryce Forney is the founder of Forney Accountancy Corporation in Pleasant Hill, CA. In 2000, Bryce Forney, CPA, left a big accounting firm to realize his vision of providing value-added accounting for small business owners. He currently consults with over 50 companies in the San Francisco Bay Area and recommends QuickBooks software for most of his small business clients. For example, he has recommended as a small business management software solution to his clients QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions, which supports higher transaction volumes, faster performance, expanded inventory control, and job-costing to help his clients see the exact price of doing business. The story of one of Forney’s clients who has benefited from QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions is listed as follows:

In 2002, Bascom Trim and Upholstery, a busy car repair shop with 30 employees in Santa Clara, CA implemented QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions under Forney’s advisement. The company’s data file had outgrown QuickBooks Pro, so that only six months’ worth of transactions could be online at a time. This slowed down dealing with repeat customers, who had to be re-entered in the system from scratch. The new system accelerated many parts of an operation already know for its efficiency. General Manager John Wardell says the company was particularly interested in linking its repair orders directly with the accounting system. Before Enterprise, these orders were all recorded in FileMaker Pro, then transferred manually everyday into QuickBooks Pro. Now everything is handled with Enterprise Solutions, which saves hours in reconciling and helps the company clear up any payment issues faster and more professionally.

Bascom also has a more streamlined inventory process thanks to QuickBooks Enterprise. Before, it used to count up items and then match them to the yearend sales figures, a process Bryce says was “painful and inaccurate.” Now whenever any item is purchased, that transaction is entered automatically into the system, so that inventory records are always accurate and up-to-date.

And John can now track inventory from four companies under the same roof—for upholstery, stereos, glass, and detailing — and consolidate them all in the same report, or break out each one separately. “It’s fabulous to get 10 different reports, because I can see 10 different sides of the business,” says John. “We’re really pleased with all the reports we can pull off this system.” John can also do a time-cost analysis for each of his employees. This has led the company to start tying part of an employee’s pay check to their productivity.

Overall, Bascom Trim and Upholstery has been happy with QuickBooks Enterprise. “Everything is all right there in front of you. You can put it all together with QuickBooks payroll, inventory, and time-tracking,” says John. “You don’t need more employees to run the system, and you don’t need to outsource your bookkeeping because you can do it right here.” As a small business management software solution for accounting, QuickBooks delivers a lot of value to small companies who are trying to streamline their operations.

B. ERP Software Case Study: SixApart and the NetSuite Solution

As the developers of TypePad and Movable Type, the world’s leading solutions for bloggers and Web publishers, Six Apart has a complex, growing business that spans the globe. As a fast-growing international company, one of its many challenges was that it needed financial visibility across geographies and currencies for its ongoing operations. Another issue was that its customer subscription model was causing headaches in revenue recognition and compliance. With nothing but QuickBooks and spreadsheets to work with, Six Apart’s revenue recognition was a tedious, error-prone process. Lastly, as the company continued to grow in size and scale, it became clear that high-level managers would need a quick way to quickly capture and synthesize the performance of multiple departments, with complete support for multi-language data.

Six Apart addressed these needs with the implementation of the NetSuite OneWorld platform, a small business management software solution that enabled the company to operate one consolidated Software-as-a-Service ERP system, including financials and revenue recognition, in a unified and fully compliant manner without having to use a large accounting staff or deploying an expensive on-premise software. Moreover, with the OneWorld solution, Six Apart was able to quickly combine its three separate instances of NetSuite into a single, unified operational and reporting platform. This small business management software solution has helped Six Apart avoid spending upwards of $100K per year in IT administration costs and has also shaved days off its monthly closing cycle – making the company much more efficient and GAAP compliant, as well as giving executives insight into any detail they need, by channel customer, product or region.

C. CRM Software Case Study: The Honey Baked Ham Company and the Salesforce Solution

Following the addition of 120 people to its sales force, The HoneyBaked Ham Company of Georgia, a purveyor of high-quality ham, needed a robust yet simple CRM solution to effectively manage its business gifting and catering sales channels. Neither the company’s ACT! database nor the Microsoft Excel database was equipped to scale to support its rapid growth. The company had no visibility into sales activities or a gauge on the effectiveness of its myriad marketing efforts. Because HoneyBaked’s IT team was busy with other development projects, the small business management software solution they needed had to be one that required minimal infrastructure and maintenance. The company also wanted a system that would not intimidate its non-technical users.

After considering developing a small business management software system in-house, HoneyBaked selected Salesforce CRM because it was easy to implement, easy to use, and provided best-in-class functionality out of the box. The company initially tested Salesforce CRM Professional Edition, then quickly rolled out the solution to 130 users company-wide; a dedicated Salesforce.com customer service manager, along with a trained in-house administrator, helps maintain the system.

Salesforce’s small business management software provided the HoneyBaked Ham Company with personalized dashboards, which allowed reps to track sales activities, which were then rolled up to the district manager level, enabling them to see a company-wide view, as well as pipeline and forecast activities. Next, web-to-lead functionality fed incoming inquiries into assignments, providing a way to track lead sources. HoneyBaked also downloaded features such as Opportunity Pop-Up Calculator, Adoption Dashboards, and Account Weather Information applications from AppExchange, which extended the value of Salesforce CRM with solutions that continue to enhance the original investment. Lastly, integration with an order POS and management system on the front end enabled users to update opportunities and accounts within Salesforce CRM.

Overall, the implementation of this small business management software resulted in a dramatic increase in pipeline visibility, giving management the ability to monitor performance, to accurately forecast, and to plan for success. The company now has visibility into its 100 different lead sources, allowing managers to shift marketing and lead generation efforts in the most profitable direction. Instant user adoption improved productivity quickly. Additionally, because users no longer had to fish for information, conversations with customers became more meaningful and productive. Overall, Salesforce’s small business management software for customer relationship management was an effective tool in improving the HoneyBaked Ham Company’s sales and marketing activities.

D. Email Marketing Software Case Study: Finale Desserterie & Bakery and Constant Contact

Established in July 1998, by Paul Conforti and Kim Moore, Finale set out to make super-premium desserts available to everyone. By Valentine’s Day of the following year, Finale had attracted a lot of buzz from local and national media as well as a curious customer base. Having celebrated 10 years in business in 2008, Finale added three more locations and, consequently, more sensational dessert experiences for thousands.

Since Finale is focused exclusively on desserts, the restaurant didn’t suffer from a great deal of competition, but they did face the perception that decadent dessert is an extravagant indulgence that may be out of the price range of many diners. In addition, while weekends, holidays, and special occasions generated consistent business, attracting customers to the restaurant mid-week was a challenge.

As the media continued to highlight Finale’s ultra-premium desserts, it became more imperative to communicate the message that Finale’s desserts were not limited to special occasions, but ideal for everyone, anytime. In addition, Finale had cultivated a loyal, growing customer base to which it needed to communicate. Finale began using small business management software that included an email marketing solution from Constant Contact to communicate events, new desserts, special offers, or other news to its customers. Finale quickly realized that it was experiencing a significant boost in reservations and inquiries following each email campaign it sent. “We always sell out events when we use Constant Contact to tell our customers about them,” said Conforti. “For example, we recently used it to tell our guests about a tasting at our Coolidge Corner location. We sold out 40 seats from an email we sent the week before. At $30 per seating for 40 seats, that’s $1200 in revenue with one e-mail message.”

The restaurant has also used Constant Contact to request feedback from its customer base. For example, in July, Finale sent out an email asking customers what they’d like to see on the holiday menu. Finale received more than 100 responses to its mailing in 24 hours and more than 300 in 72 hours. “People are writing back just saying thanks for asking,” says Kim Moore, Finale’s co-founder. “It’s a very real way to be connected to our customer base.”

Finale now has more than 14,000 customers who receive its emails. The results have been absolutely sensational since implementing a small business management software system. From sold out events to customer feedback, Finale recognizes the tremendous value Constant Contact has provided to the business.

In addition, based on the success of the holiday menu email they sent that requested feedback, Finale will also soon roll-out Constant Contact’s ListenUp! online survey tool in order to obtain even more valuable feedback from customers. “No matter how successful a restaurant is, having the time and budget for a successful marketing campaign is difficult. Advertising costs too much money and it doesn’t guarantee that guests will come to your wine dinner. And your publicist can’t guarantee that the local paper will write about your event either,” said Moore. “For us, we have been successful at filling the room on a Monday night with clear and simple email marketing through Constant Contact. And it only costs us a small monthly fee.”

Overall, Constant Contact’s small business management software has been instrumental in helping Finale execute successful marketing campaigns, while nurturing a loyal and engaged customer base.

This article has highlighted many examples of how small business management software in a variety of industries has helped companies around the world compete more effectively in the marketplace. As small businesses grow into larger companies, and their needs require greater levels of support, many small business management software vendors have begun to provide solutions to address those specific needs and have greatly added value to enhance small-business operations across the globe.
