I’ve thoroughly evaluated 23 leading AI copywriting tools so I can give you insights into their features, advantages, drawbacks, and pricing.

My pick of the bunch is Jasper, but which will you choose to 10x your content production?

Let’s find out.

1. Jasper : Best For Content Marketing

Jasper – Homepage

Jasper is the best AI content generator for creating marketing copy, but that’s not all it can do.

It comes with over 50 templates that make it great for creating nearly any type of content. From product descriptions to social media profiles, Jasper has you covered.

Here’s just some of what it can do:

I found Jasper really easy to use. All I had to do was select a template, type in the information about my desired content, and adjust the output settings. Then, I simply hit the generate button and my content was ready in seconds.

Some of its most useful templates include video script outlines, blog idea outlines, photo post captions, and social media ad posts. The variety of templates on offer makes it a great choice for social media marketers and bloggers.

When I was creating an ad with the Facebook Ad Primary Text template, I had to use three prompts.

The first one was for a company or product name. I went with the company name “Extreme Fitness”.

Jasper then asked me for a product description. I added these details: “$9.99 a month, no contracts, individual and group fitness classes, dedicated personal trainers”.

For the tone of voice, I chose “fitness fanatic”:

  • Search engine optimization (SEO) : Jasper has Surfer SEO integration, so you can create perfectly-optimized content with just a few clicks.
  • Grammarly integration : Automatic spelling, grammar, and clarity checks.
  • Tone settings : Adjust the tone and phrasing to suit your desired audience.
  • Speech-to-text input : Add further detail to the text using your voice.

What I like:

The Jasper AI writing tool comes with more than 50 copywriting templates. All you need to do is input a small amount of information, such as some keywords, and Jasper generates your content for you.

Generating long-form content is also straightforward. Once you’ve written a sentence or a paragraph, Jasper has enough information to produce high-quality content.

I find that Jasper’s chatbot, Jasper Chat, has the edge over ChatGPT. It has a Google Search integration that returns source links, allowing you to fact-check the output. Although this does mean it takes a bit longer to work, it’s brilliant for writers who have mastered the art of writing prompts.

I really liked using Power Mode too. It opens up a sub-menu displaying each of the Jasper Workflows. These are similar to templates but with more structured input fields. You can use them to craft an awesome LinkedIn post, brainstorm a unique value proposition, or nail a clear company bio.

What I don’t like:

The main issue I found with Jasper is that it struggles to create content about highly technical topics. When I asked it to write about page speed optimization, it tended to generate content with sections that weren’t totally relevant to the topic.

Pricing plans:

Jasper has a seven-day free trial and its most basic pricing tier, the Creator plan, starts at $49 per month, which gives you unlimited words. The Teams package is $125 per month and the Business plan has custom pricing.

2. Copy.ai : Best For Copywriting

Like Jasper, Copy.ai is an AI content generator that’s ideal if you want to create blog posts and social media posts. It requires very little user input to generate unique content.

When using the Blog Post Wizard tool, your templates just need a title, some keywords, and a tone of voice. Copy.ai will first generate an outline for the piece (which you can adjust as needed), then start writing your content once you’re happy with the outline.

Here’s how it did when I tasked it with writing a post titled “what are backlinks?”:

The rest of the templates, such as the Facebook Headlines template, are just as easy to use and Copy.ai helps you out with editing suggestions along the way.

  • Chrome extension : With Copy.ai at your fingertips, you can breeze through your workday without juggling multiple tabs. It’s the ULTIMATE convenience hack for busy professionals—it integrates seamlessly with apps like Gmail and Google Docs.
  • More Like This feature : With this, you can save your favorite ideas generated by the AI and then ask it to create more ideas, well, like these!
  • Over 90 copywriting templates : This includes templates for digital ad copy, eCommerce copy, and social media content.

Copy.ai – Templates

The fact that Copy.ai allows you to have unlimited projects is pretty neat. And, you can easily create folders to store related content and then organize your files by project. (You’ll never lose that much-needed ad copy again!).

While all content produced by AI writing tools needs to be fact-checked, I found that Copy.ai particularly struggles with dates. I asked it for the specific dates of the 2020 World Series games, and the results were pretty inaccurate.

I also found the content creation process was much slower with Copy.ai than with Jasper. Here’s why.

Jasper quickly generates long pieces of content based on the prompt, whereas Copy.ai takes a more gradual approach, providing content snippets that you build upon.

For that reason, I’d recommend Jasper for copywriters looking to produce high volumes of work in a short space of time. Copy.ai is better suited to content creators who aren’t as pressed for time.

Copy.ai’s free plan only gives you 2,000 words of content each month. If you want to use it for regular content writing, then you’ll need the Pro plan which starts at $49 per month. As with Jasper’s first pricing tier, for $49 a month, you get unlimited words.

The BIG difference is that Copy.ai’s Pro plan gives you access to five user seats but Jasper’s Creator plan only gives you access to one. So, Copy.ai is a MUCH more affordable option for teams where multiple people need access to the tool.

3. Semrush :  Best For SEO Content

Semrush AI Writing Assistant

Semrush’s AI Writing Assistant is perfect for both content creators and marketers. It generates unique, fully-optimized content, ready for you to publish (after some fact-checking, of course). Just sit back and watch as the rankings start coming in.

The AI Writing Assistant is a separate app available from the Semrush app store.

The Paragraph Generator tool is great for generating small pieces of content that you can work into the rest of your piece. To use it, you type in the title of your article and then feed it the subheading you want it to create content for.

When you’re ready, hit the Generate button and watch as the AI Writing Assistant produces an optimized paragraph for you.

Pretty cool.

The title I chose was ‘Understanding On-Page SEO: A Comprehensive Guide’. The subheading I used was ‘The Difference Between On-Page and Off-Page Seo’. Here’s a look at what I got:

  • Content writing tools : There are 75 to choose from, including a text summarizer, an Amazon product description writer, a meta description writer, and a LinkedIn post generator. All your content needs are covered here.
  • Plagiarism checker : You can easily check for plagiarism with the built-in tool, saving you money on Copyscape credits.
  • Optimization : Allows you to add keywords suggested by Semrush to increase the chances of your content ranking.
  • AI Social Content Generator : Impressive generation of both text and visual content, including text-to-video, based on competitive data

There were a lot of different things that I really liked about Semrush’s AI Writing Assistant. One of the best things is that the tool helps you to write content that’s optimized but isn’t just stuffed with keywords. The content it produces is highly readable and actually gives value to the reader.

With Semrush, you can quickly check how your content looks and make sure that it’s as readable as you want it to be. Although ChatGPT can focus on readability if you prompt it to, this is done as standard when using Semrush’s AI Writing Assistant.

This makes it the perfect choice if you’re looking to create well-optimized content that your readers will truly value.

I didn’t experience many issues when using the AI Writing Assistant. The only times I got sub-par results were when my headings and titles were too vague.

Semrush’s free plan gives you 1,500 credits. When they run out, you’ll need to upgrade to a premium subscription which costs $45 per month.

ChatGPT – Homepage

If you’re interested in content writing and SEO, then you’ve definitely already heard of ChatGPT. It’s caused a wave of both fear and excitement throughout the SEO community.

Still, I’ll give you a recap.

ChatGPT is an AI Chatbot that was released by OpenAI in November 2022. It’s trained on a huge dataset and responds to user prompts with content in a desired form.

I asked ChatGPT for some keywords to target for a blog about “The Most Expensive Houses in Phoenix, Arizona”.

I chose “Phoenix luxury homes”, “high-end properties in Phoenix”, and “most expensive homes in Phoenix” from the keywords it gave me.

Then I asked ChatGPT to write a 500-word optimized blog post for me:

As you can see, the results are pretty decent for a few moments of work!

  • Versatility : ChatGPT can be used for coding, writing lyrics, writing blogs, and much more. It’s great for work AND play!
  • Personalization : ChatGPT can replicate different voices (even mine!)—often successfully.

One of ChatGPT’s strengths is its ability to create SEO-friendly content. It’s fairly adept at analyzing content and suggesting keywords.

Another thing to keep in mind is that ChatGPT, as the name suggests, is a chatbot. This means that you can have in-depth conversations with it about any topic you please, which is perfect for overcoming writer’s block (and having a bit of fun).

Let’s say you’ve been stuck for ages trying to come up with headings for an article about the best organic dog food (we’ve all been there). You can have a back-and-forth with ChatGPT to give you some fresh ideas on the subject and get that piece moving along.

ChatGPT also allows for a high degree of customization which means it can be prompted to generate content for many different use cases. It’s certainly more customizable than Jasper which relies on its pre-built templates to produce its content. So, if you prefer coming up with prompts yourself rather than having more guidance, you’ll prefer ChatGPT over Jasper.

The main drawback with ChatGPT is that its dataset doesn’t include any information after September 2021. This means that all of its content must be thoroughly fact-checked, and it can’t provide you with the most up-to-date information on a topic.

You can still use ChatGPT for free or you can sign up for ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month. The paid option gives you much faster response times, access during peak hours, and priority access to all the latest features.

Rytr – Homepage

Rytr’s AI content generator utilizes GPT-3 technology to create content. This puts it at a disadvantage compared to AI tools that use GPT-4, such as Writesonic. GPT-4 has 100 TRILLION parameters compared to GPT-3’s 175 billion. All of those extra parameters lead to more accurate and coherent text.

This is one of the reasons I’d mostly recommend using it for short-form content writing.

To create your content, you:

  • Choose the desired tone of voice
  • Pick a use case
  • Provide a topic for your content
  • Add a few relevant keywords you want to include
  • Choose the number of variants you want (so you can choose the best)
  • Select the creativity level you want the AI to use
  • Click on “Ryte For Me”.

For my prompts, I chose “what is content marketing?” as my title and then used “content marketing tips”, “content marketing strategies”, and “content marketing best practices” as my keywords:

The text it generated for me was pretty generic, to be honest. The tone of voice was informative but to the point where the readability really suffered.

I found the content ChatGPT produced for me was MUCH more readable and had far more personality.

  • Image generation : Ryter isn’t just an AI writer—you can also use it to generate royalty-free images. It’s a GREAT tool for making that blog post look more visually appealing.
  • Language support : Rytr supports more than 30 languages.

One of my favorite features of this AI content generator is the number of available use cases. With over 40 at your disposal, including profile bios, meta descriptions, and job descriptions, you can quickly create a wide variety of content.

The biggest drawback I experienced when using Rytr is that there sometimes isn’t too much difference between the tone of voice options.

For example, I asked it to generate the same piece of content using an informative voice and then using a humorous voice. I can’t say that I found myself laughing at the “humorous” version.

Similar AI writing tools such as Copysmith, Kafkai, and Jasper perform MUCH better in that department.

Rytr’s free plan is pretty generous and includes access to over 40 use cases but limits you to 10,000 characters (not words) a month. Its Saver plan is $9 per month, allows you to generate your own custom use cases, and gets you 100,000 characters per month.

The Unlimited plan is $29 per month. For that, you get unlimited characters and access to your own dedicated account manager.

6. Writesonic

Writesonic is a good option if you’re looking to create an engaging blog post and need high-quality templates to guide you.

All the new AI Content Writer 4.0 feature needs is subject to start with. The topic I chose was “best port cellars in Porto”:

It then generated keywords for me. The three I chose were “Taylor port”, “best port wine”, and “Porto wine tasting”:

The idea generation stage is next. Here, you choose the tone of voice, point of view, quality type, language, and a call to action, if you like.

I chose an engaging tone of voice, a first-person point of view, and I set the quality type to premium:

Writesonic then gave me a few headings to choose from. I went with “Taylor Port: Uncovering the Hidden Gems of Porto’s Port Cellars”.

Once I’d chosen my heading, it then generated an outline including different sections and headings. The next stage is to choose your favorite outline:

Then finally generate the article. Here’s how it looked:

I was actually surprised at the quality of the content that Writesonic produced considering how little input was required from me. It nailed the tone of voice (which was certainly engaging), and the short piece wouldn’t look out of place on a lot of travel blogs. 

  • Sentence expander : This is really useful for helping you to build up sentences based on one or two words.
  • Paraphrasing tool : I found this helpful when I was looking for a new way to phrase a sentence.
  • Landing page generator : This allows you to quickly generate landing pages for your site.

The thing that stood out to me when using this AI writer was the templates it provides.

These are split into separate groups: There are groups of templates for articles and blogs, ads and marketing tools, general writing, eCommerce, social media, website copy, and others.

Writesonic allows you to tweak the outlines it generates until they’re just right. It’s easy to use and doesn’t take much getting used to.

In fact, this is one area where it excels compared to Jasper. Using Jasper’s templates to their full capabilities involves a steeper learning curve. If you want to get up and running as quickly as possible, then Writesonic will suit you more than Jasper.

So, Writesonic is a pretty versatile tool.

It’s also one of the few AI writing tools so far that has adopted GPT-4 technology. This gives it an advantage over the likes of Rytr when it comes to the reliability of its information.

The most frustrating thing about Writesonic is how limited the number of words is for the lower price tiers. They lure you in with a low starting price, but this only gets you 60,000 words, which is unlikely to be enough for most content writers.

Plus, the free trial doesn’t give you enough words to properly test all of your content ideas.

Writesonic’s free trial limits you to 10,000 words. Its Long-Form plan starts at $12.67 a month and is designed for freelancers and bloggers.

7. AI-Writer

AI-Writer is a useful tool for writing SEO content. Once you enter a headline or topic into AI-Writer (that’s all you need to give it), it starts generating content that’s designed to help your website’s SEO.

I used “10 Most Common Mistakes In SEO” as my title, and AI-Writer generated my article in a matter of minutes.

  • Multi-platform compatibility : AI-Writer is compatible with Mac, iOS, Android, and Windows.
  • Syncing : AI-Writer can be synced with iCloud, Dropbox, and other storage services.
  • Rewording function : This allows you to enhance content that you’ve already created or even published.

I really liked the fact that the interface for AI-Writer is nice and simple. Some other content generator tools are overly complicated, such as LongShot and Simplified (ironically), which I find off-putting. AI-Writer is easy to use and doesn’t have any unnecessary frills.

The content that AI-Writer generated for me was often quite generic. It usually lacked any distinct voice and I wouldn’t say it was overly enjoyable to read.

AI-Writer is one of the more expensive options I’ve come across. The Basic plan is $29 per month, the Standard plan is $59 per month, and the Power plan is a massive $375 per month. AI-Writer does also have a seven-day free trial.

Frase – Homepage

Frase is one of the best AI content generators I’ve used for SEO-focused content. While it can’t compete with an expert SEO writer (of course), it’s extremely useful for helping you to generate SEO content—and would be one of my go-to for this type of copywriting.

You access the AI content generator from the main Frase dashboard. You only need to input relatively basic prompts to get it going, such as “write me an optimized blog post based around the keywords sneaker proxies and sneaker bots with a maximum of 500 words”.

  • Integrated optimization : Frase structures its AI-generated content based on top-ranking results in SERPs.
  • Brief generator : Generates SEO-friendly, full-length blog templates automatically.

The thing I LOVE about the Frase AI content generator is probably the thing that everyone else likes— its focus on optimization . Frase asks you for a target search query and then creates content designed to rank for this search.

Another thing I was impressed with were Frase’s automated content briefs. The AI lets you check at a glance what your competitors’ headings are and what they’re writing about. Frase then uses this and other information, such as topic clusters, to generate a detailed brief for you.

In just a few seconds, it outputs large volumes of text pretty seamlessly. It’s PERFECT if you need to generate a lot of content in a short space of time.

Frase also has an Attention Interest Desire Action (AIDA) template which is really handy for generating ad copy and product descriptions. All you need to do is input a brief product description, some information about your audience, and select the creativity level.

So, if you’re looking for ways to enhance your digital marketing and sales strategies, I’d highly recommend taking Frase for a spin.

Another reason Frase is great for SEO content is its listicle template. With just a title, it generates engaging listicle articles that can be as creative as you want them to be.

I like to get plenty of bang for my buck and I find Frase to be overly expensive. The word limit for its writing tool stays the same even if you pay for the pricier plans. However, you can’t access many of the best features if you only have the most basic plan.

The Solo plan will set you back $14.99 per month and the Basic plan costs $44.99 per month. The Team plan is $114.99 per month.

The Pro add-on for your subscription costs another $34.99 per month. This gives you unlimited access to the AI writing tool. Without it, you can only generate 4,000 words a month. There are no free trials for Frase.

9. ContentBot

ContentBot handles both short-form and long-form copy pretty darn well. If you’re a content marketer, digital marketer, or copywriter, then this AI writing assistant will be right up your street.

When using the Instruct Bot feature, you can ask ContentBot to generate any type of content you want. If you struggle to come up with a prompt, you can select one of the “community prompts”.

  • Blog Shot : This lets you automatically create a blog post with just one click.
  • Press release tool : Allows you to auto-generate press releases.
  • Integrations : ContentBot has a plugin for WordPress and a Chrome extension, so you can use it just about anywhere.

I found ContentBot’s AI paraphrasing tool to be a really handy feature. It lets you enhance and rewrite long-form content quickly and easily.

As with Writesonic, this AI content generator doesn’t give you enough words in the free trial to test it out properly.

I’m NOT a fan of this.

I much prefer a purely subscription-based trial where you don’t have to worry about running out of words while you’re in the middle of something. Fortunately, many AI content generators use this model.

ContentBot’s free demo gives you 5,000 words. The Starter plan costs $19 per month, the Premium plan is $59 per month, and the Premium+ plan is $99 per month.

10. Anyword

Anyword is similar to Copy.ai in that it generates blog posts without much fuss.

To get going, you describe the type of blog post you want and supply it with the keywords you’d like to target.

My prompt was “The Best Hiking Trails In California” and I used related keywords like “best hiking in the Golden State” and “best coastal hiking in California”.

You then need to choose one of the titles it suggests and approve the blog post outline it generates. Once that’s done, you’re all good to go.

As you can see, the title Anyword suggested was right on the money. The introduction also has a really nice flow to it.

Anyword isn’t just limited to creating blog posts, though. It also has tools for creating landing pages, ad copy, company bios, and social media posts.

Consider it your all-in-one content creation sidekick.

  • Collaboration tools : Lets you get the whole team involved.
  • Data-driven editor : Gives your content engagement scores and helps you target it to your specific audience.

I really like the amount of control Anyword gives you during the content creation process. At every stage of your outline, you can give the AI instructions. This includes what style to use, which facts to mention, and what details the content needs to cover.

My only real beef with Anyword is that you have to pay for one of the most expensive plans to gain access to most of the features. If you’re not willing to break the bank, then you’re stuck with a really basic AI tool.

Anyword’s free trial lasts for seven days. But as I mentioned, you don’t get to try out many of its features. The Starter plan begins at $24 per month. The Data-Driven plan, which you need to get the best features, starts at $83 per month.

11. Article Forge

ArticleForge – Homepage

To generate content with Article Forge, you only need to give it three pieces of information—language, keywords, and length. As it generates content, Article Forge can also insert images, headings, and hyperlinks automatically.

  • Integration : Article Forge’s API allows for integration with an array of apps.
  • WordPress publication : You can post articles on WordPress directly from the Article Forge generator.

Article Forge has an intuitive interface, making it easy to customize elements of your article such as secondary keywords, length, and subheadings. This allows you to create high-quality content that should rank in search engines.

The main issue I had with Article Forge is that it often produced sentences unrelated to the topic. Of course, this meant I had to do quite a lot of editing.

Article Forge starts at $27 per month. It offers a five-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

12. Scalenut AI Writer

You can use Scalenut throughout the ENTIRE content creation process. From topic research and keyword planning right through to writing an optimized blog post, you can do it all in one nifty tool.

To produce articles, just type your keywords into the Topic Cluster tool and click the Create Brief button. It then lets you edit the outline before it starts writing.

  • Natural Language Processing (NLP) analysis : This AI writing assistant gives you keywords semantically related to your topic and uses them to create optimized content.
  • Cruise Mode : In just five steps, you can plan and generate an entire article.
  • Integration : Integrates with platforms including Copyscape, WordPress, and Semrush.

Scalenut gives you actionable insights on keywords and trending topics. It can then generate content your audience is interested in.

As with Article Forge, I sometimes had to edit Scalenut’s content quite heavily. This was pretty time-consuming. However, this wasn’t always the case. A lot of the work that Scalenut produced for me was high quality and just required some minor tweaking before it was good to go.

13. LongShot

LongShot is great for writing blog posts and for generating short-form copy-like meta descriptions. To start, you select a type of content and then provide LongShot with some fairly basic information about what you want it to write.

When writing a blog, you simply give the AI a topic and tell it what keywords you want to optimize the blog for.

Then, you pick some of the suggested keywords, subheadings, and questions to give LongShot more of an idea of the type of blog article you’re looking for.

LongShot uses this information to generate headlines for the article. Once you’re happy with your title, you select one of the suggested outlines and LongShot gives you your text.

For my blog, the topic prompt I used was ‘Social media SEO’ and I asked LongShot to optimize the blog for ‘How to improve your social media SEO efforts’.

  • Fact generator : LongShot automatically provides facts related to your topic. These facts are pulled from authoritative websites within your niche.
  • Fact-checker : Detects questionable facts automatically.

The fact-checker feature makes LongShot really stand out from other AI content generators. Factual inaccuracies are one of the biggest issues with AI-generated content.

So, having an in-built fact-checker is a HUGE plus. Of course, you should still fact-check all content produced by AI yourself, but this tool should make that a less laborious task.

LongShot takes some getting used to if you want to get the most out of its features. The learning curve is quite steep to start generating SEO content.

LongShot has a free plan, but you only get 50 credits (which will run out quickly). The other three pricing tiers are:

  • Pro : $19 per month
  • Team : $49 per month
  • Agency : $299 per month

The Agency plan makes LongShot a good option for SEO agencies looking to scale their content production.

14. Copysmith

Alongside Jasper, Copysmith’s AI Article Writing Assistant is the best for generating long-form content. To use it, you type in a topic that you want to cover, choose one of the generated ideas, select an outline, and Copysmith starts writing.

It’s one of the best AI tools for freelancers, marketing agencies, and eCommerce store owners looking to quickly generate a LOT of content.

To put Copysmith to the test, I asked it to write me a blog about “mobile friendly SEO”. Here’s what it came up with:

  • Team collaboration : Copysmith allows you to share your project’s folders, files, and content generator tools with your colleagues.
  • High level of integration : It can integrate with WooCommerce, Frase, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and more.
  • Bulk content generator : You can generate content for multiple entries at the same time. This is a HUGE time saver for busy marketers.

Copysmith can create up to 15 content variations, each with a unique tone of voice. This is ideal for generating content based on various use cases.

I also like the fact you can use it to audit your existing content. It allows you to easily enhance, extend, and rewrite your sentences if you’re struggling with writer’s block.

The only real downside of Copysmith is it’s not great for creating content in languages other than English. Copysmith does claim to support other languages, but I found the results to be poor.

Copysmith has a seven-day free trial and its Starter Plan is $19 per month. The Pro Plan, which is $49 per month, is best suited to individual writers like freelancers. If you want to use it for your company, you’ll need to get a custom quote for Copysmith’s Enterprise Plan.

15. HyperWrite

HyperWrite – Homepage

HyperWrite is better for research and generating ideas than it is for writing content. It works in the same way as ChatGPT: You give it a prompt and it responds.

I used its “Expert Writing Assistant” to get some help with the introduction to an article. I used the prompt “give me advice on writing an introduction for my article about the best vacation spots in the US for families”.

HyperWrite then gave me a few different introduction ideas to get the juices flowing. The jury’s out as to whether it can be considered an “expert” or not, but the results were not bad:

  • Personal Database : This feature teaches the AI to write in your voice for a more consistent output.

HyperWrite comes with fifty templates for a variety of different use cases. So, everyone from content writers to marketers and web designers can use it.

The Personal Database is another nice feature. The AI scans documents you’ve written to analyze your writing style so that it can emulate it. Now, like me, you may find it a little bit unsettling that a machine can imitate you—but it’s worth being a bit creeped out by how useful this tool is.

Although you can integrate HyperWrite with third-party apps like Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and Gmail, you can’t integrate it with plagiarism tools like Copyscape. This means it’s a little limited in functionality compared to tools like Scalenut.

Hyperwrite’s most basic plan is free forever but is VERY limited. The Premium plan is $19.99 per month and the Ultra plan is $44.99 per month.

16. Peppertype

PepperContent – Homepage

The Peppertype AI writing assistant is powered by GPT-3. It can handle most types of content and using it is effortless.

You just need to choose a style and a subject, and Peppertype serves up your content.

  • Team features: Peppertype allows you to share your account with your team members (but you have to pay more for each user).
  • Templates : Peppertype comes with 50 templates, making all your content creation tasks a breeze.

I found the Blog Heading Expander tool really useful. After giving Peppertype a heading, it gave me plenty of ideas for engaging content.

The content that Peppertype produced was often full of errors that took a long time to correct. I don’t think there’s much danger of Peppertype’s output being referred to as high-quality content just yet.

There isn’t a free trial for Peppertype as such, but you can book a demo. There are three different pricing tiers:

  • Personal : $33.33 per month
  • Team : $37.50 per user, per month
  • Enterprise : Custom pricing

17. NeuroFlash

NeuroFlash – Homepage

NeuroFlash’s AI content generator allows you to create marketing text in eight languages.

All NeuroFlash needs from you when creating a blog is your chosen topic and title. You then select a suggested outline and click the Create button.

My topic prompt was “baking bread” and I went with the title “5 Easy Steps For Baking Your Own Bread”.

Here’s how it performed:

  • ChatFlash : NeuroFlash has a chatbot built into its interface.

The AI Tester feature is pretty neat. It allows you to set a communication style and then NeuroFlash will analyze your text to see if it matches your content goals.

Neuroflash doesn’t include a plagiarism checker. The company claims the content is plagiarism-free, but Copyscape picked up plenty of matches when I tested the content it generated.

NeuroFlash’s free plan is limited to 2,000 words a month.

Its priced tiers are:

  • Power : Starts at $59 per month
  • Premium : $199 per month

18. ParagraphAI

ParagraphAI – Homepage

ParagraphAI is best suited to marketers looking to generate ad copy. It works in the same way as ChatGPT—by responding to your prompts with text.

The Chrome extension lets you effortlessly create short-form copy whenever you need it. The tool can make paragraphs, lists, messages, emails, or full articles.

All you have to do is tell it what you want the content to be about, then select a tone. You can further tweak the tone using the sliders to set how formal, assertive, and friendly the copy is.

Here’s how it did in my quick test:

As you can see, it’s pretty light-hearted (as I asked) and the information is relevant.

  • Multi-platform compatibility : ParagraphAI works on Android, iOS, and Chrome.
  • Languages : Generates content in over 30 languages.

The best thing about ParagraphAI is that you can download it as an app on your smartphone. The app’s smartphone keyboard makes ParagraphAI very convenient and easy to use.

The content that ParagraphAI produces is FULL of factual errors . Out of all the AI content generators on this list, this was the worst example of factual inaccuracies that I came across.

ParagraphAI’s free plan is free forever, but you’re limited to 5,000 words a day. Still, that’s pretty generous if you ask me.

19. Simplified

Simplified – Homepage

This AI tool is simplified by name but not by nature.

It allows you to generate many different types of content, including ad copy, blogs, eCommerce product descriptions, and company bios.

As with many of the AI content generators on my list, all Simplified needs are a few simple commands. For instance, when I asked it to generate an Amazon product listing for me, I provided a product name and some of its features:

  • Copy types : Simplified gives you access to over 40 types of content templates.
  • Graphics : The tool can automatically generate graphics and layouts for your content.

Simplified is great for scaling pieces of content, which is particularly helpful if you’re a marketer.

For example, let’s say you need to create a series of Facebook posts. You just feed Simplified some keywords and a brief company description, and it’ll automatically generate a series of posts.

The biggest drawback of Simplified is its UI. Despite its name, I found it a bit frustrating to use—it’s difficult to locate some of the tool’s key features.

Simplified has a free plan that stays free forever. However, this is only really useful if you just want to try out some of its features.

The Small Team plan is $30 per month and the Business plan is $50 per month. The Growth plan, which is designed for high-growth businesses, will set you back $125 per month.

Zyro – Homepage

Zyro is primarily a website builder, but it comes with AI tools built-in. You can use these tools to ensure the websites you create are fully optimized.

The AI slogan maker, business name generator, writing assistant, and logo maker are all incredibly helpful when designing websites.

To generate text, you first have to choose a category:

You then choose a more specific category from the list provided, and the tool will automatically create seven variations for you to choose from. Here’s a quick look:

While you’d have to tweak the text depending on your services, the output is a GREAT starting point.

And I didn’t even have to give it any prompts—all it took was a few clicks.

  • AI image upscaler : This enhances images to match the quality of your website.
  • AI photo resizer : Automatically adjusts image dimensions for different devices.
  • AI heatmap : This tool can predict visitor engagement so that you can design high-converting landing pages.

To be honest, I like most of the AI features that Zyro has to offer. All of the tools I mentioned above come in handy and make building an optimized website a breeze.

In terms of content generation, Zyro can create blog posts that are also fairly well-optimized. It isn’t as good at this as Semrush or GrowthBarSEO, but it’s still fairly impressive.

It would be nice if Zyro released a stand-alone AI writing tool. Currently, the only way to access it is to buy a subscription to Zyro’s website builder. I’d like to be able to access the AI tools without doing so.

As mentioned, you need to pay for a subscription to Zyro to access its AI content generator. This means paying $11.99 per month for a Website plan or $14.99 for a Business plan.

21. Smart Copy by Unbounce

Unbounce – Smart Copy – Homepage

Smart Copy can write most types of copy—from Google Ads to landing pages. It has over 45 templates to choose from and can even make suggestions for TikTok videos.

Once you’ve chosen a template, you provide Smart Copy with some information about your target audience and your products or services. Then, just leave it to do its thing.

Or, you can use Brainstorm Mode to create content with virtually no input from you.

To create a landing page, I simply told the AI that it was for an eCommerce store and that I wanted the page to be optimized.

I have to say, I was impressed with the results I got from such little information. See for yourself:

  • Straightforward UI : Smart Copy has kept its interface nice and minimal, which makes it really easy to use.
  • Profiles : The tool allows you to build different profiles so the content it generates closely matches your goals.
  • Extensions : You can install Smart Copy as a Chrome extension.

I found Smart Copy’s refining feature to be a really nice addition. It allows you to fine-tune the content generator so you get the EXACT length and tone you’re looking for.

I have to say, several of the blog posts I asked Smart Copy to write for me were pretty low quality. There were numerous grammatical errors and the writing just felt, well, clunky. Still, when I used it to create landing pages the results were REALLY impressive.

You can test Smart Copy for free, but you only get 40 credits a month. This is enough for just one project. You’ll need to upgrade to the Essential plan for $19 per month if you want full access to the tool.

Kafkai – Homepage

Kafkai is a good option for bloggers looking for a wide array of blog post templates.

To write a blog post, you select a template related to your niche and then type in a paragraph describing your desired content. Kafkai does the rest.

  • WordPress integration : Kafkai offers a WordPress plugin for seamless integration.
  • Template library : This includes templates for niches such as education, health and fitness, and finance.

The most basic Kafkai plan allows you to generate up to 100 articles every month with no word limit.

Kafkai is limited in its uses and is definitely only suitable for bloggers. If you’re a marketer, then this isn’t the AI content generator for you.

The BEST thing?

It only takes two clicks to do this.

The first click selects whether you want to create a new article or optimize an existing article.

Then, you type in your prompt and add a domain (if you want).

Lastly, you click the submit button and wait for your content.

  • Integration : You can generate content directly into WordPress.
  • Optimize existing content : GrowthBarSEO allows you to import your content and gives you recommendations for improvements.

My favorite thing about GrowthBarSEO is its custom AI models.

If you give it some information about your goals, it builds a custom AI model that creates content in your desired tone of voice.

As with most AI content generators, the text that GrowthBarSEO produces needs a lot of editing and fact-checking to be usable.

Will AI Content Generators Replace Content Writers?

Since AI content generators first emerged, there has been a LOT of fear and apprehension among everyone in the content writing world.

Of course, I’ve also been concerned about the impact these tools are going to have on content writers and agencies.

The good news is that I don’t think the consequences of this are going to be as negative as we all thought they might be. In fact, the results may actually be fairly positive within the industry.

Instead of replacing content writers, AI tools should help to make their jobs easier . They can assist with more mundane tasks such as researching, editing, and rewriting. This will give writers more time to focus on making their writing more engaging and effective.

Plus, agencies can use AI tools to help them scale their content and analyze it. It’ll be easier than ever to create optimized content, and these tools will remove some of the workload from very busy SEOs.

But why won’t AI content generators be used instead of humans?

Quite simply, they can’t create content with the same emotions and creativity that humans can.

When you read a piece of AI-generated text, it may seem fine on the surface—but you can tell that something is missing.

What’s missing is the human element. Until AI is able to replicate that, content writers’ jobs are safe.

What Is Google’s Stance On AI-Generated Content?

Not long ago, Google made it clear that AI content was definitely against its guidelines. However, this quickly changed.

Now, Google says that as long as AI content generators are used in the right way, the content they produce won’t go against the guidelines.

So, what does Google mean by this?

Essentially, any content generated by AI needs to meet the same standards they’d expect from a human writer. It needs to provide value to the user and be of sufficient quality to satisfy Google’s E-E-A-T guidelines .

Google uses techniques such as NLP algorithms to detect content that’s been generated by AI. Yet, as long as this content is within the E-E-A-T guidelines then the site that publishes it won’t be penalized.

The key takeaway from this is that you need to avoid posting content that’s been completely created by AI without any fact-checking or editing. You should mostly be using AI for research and to generate content ideas.

If you do want to publish a piece of AI-generated content, you need to heavily edit it first and make sure that it’s up to the standards you’d usually require.

Google is still on the hunt for spammy, over-optimized junk, whether it’s been created by a human or AI.

When it detects content like this, penalties follow. As you know, this damages your credibility and causes your rankings to take a nosedive.

Is AI-generated content plagiarized?

Content generated by AI isn’t classed as plagiarism as the AI isn’t directly copying someone else’s work. However, some AI tools have a tendency to lift content straight from published articles. So, you should always put the content through a plagiarism checker once it’s been generated.

Do AI content generators work?

AI content generators do work and, depending on which one you use, they will be able to generate different types of content based on your goals. Still, you need to be careful. Avoid publishing AI content as it is. Always edit the content and make sure that it won’t violate Google’s guidelines.

Is AI content detectable?

Yes, AI content is quite easily detectable. Google has several methods for detecting it, and so do agencies. There are now plenty of AI detectors online such as Originality.AI, Copyleaks, and Content at Scale. These use NLP algorithms and machine learning to detect AI-generated content.

What is the problem with AI writing tools?

One of the biggest problems with AI writers is that the work they produce is often factually inaccurate. Plus, AI is prone to keyword-stuffing and producing content that doesn’t provide value to the reader.

Is AI content writing worth it?

Some AI tools can produce high-quality content, but you can’t usually publish it as-is. So, in that sense, AI content writing isn’t worth it, as you’ll still need to spend a lot of time editing it to ensure it’s of a high enough standard to publish. When AI writers are used in the correct way , they can help you to enhance your own content.

Who owns the copyright on AI-generated content?

This is still a very gray area. Currently, the US government is trying to decide whether a human who prompts an AI to create something should be able to copyright the work. Until now, US copyright law has prohibited AI from being classed as an “author” . At the time of writing, this debate is still ongoing.

Of course, all AI writing software needs human supervision to deliver the best results. Left to its own devices, it tends to produce fairly generic and frequently incorrect content, even if it can pass for something a human wrote. Now that AI tools are increasingly popular, people also seem more aware of what bland AI-produced content reads like and are likely to spot it—or at least be suspicious of content that feels like it lacks something.

I've been covering this kind of generative AI technology for almost a decade. Since AI is supposedly trying to take my job, I'm somewhat professionally interested in the whole situation. Still, I think I'm pretty safe for now. These AI writing tools are getting incredibly impressive, but you have to work with them, rather than just letting them spit out whatever they want.

How do AI writing tools work?

Search Google for AI writing software, and you'll find dozens of different options, all with suspiciously similar features. There's a big reason for this: 95% of these AI writing tools use the same large language models (LLMs) as the back end.

Some of the bigger apps are also integrating their own fine-tuning or using other LLMs like Claude . But most are really just wrappers connected to OpenAI's GPT-3 and GPT-4 APIs, with a few extra features built on top—even if they try to hide it in their own marketing materials. If you wanted to, you could even create your own version of an AI writing assistant without code using Zapier's OpenAI integrations —that's how much these apps rely on GPT.

Now this isn't to say that none of these AI-powered writing apps are worth using. They all offer a much nicer workflow than ChatGPT or OpenAI's playground , both of which allow you to generate text with GPT as well. And the better apps allow you to set a "voice" or guidelines that apply to all the text you generate. But the difference between these apps isn't really in the quality of their output. With a few exceptions, you'll get very similar results from the same prompt no matter which app you use—even if they use different LLMs. Where the apps on this list stand out is in how easy they make it to integrate AI text generation into an actual workflow.

As for the underlying LLM models themselves, they work by taking a prompt from you, and then predicting what words will best follow on from your request, based on the data they were trained on. That training data includes books, articles, and other documents across all different topics, styles, and genres—and an unbelievable amount of content scraped from the open internet . Basically, LLMs were allowed to crunch through the sum total of human knowledge to form a deep learning neural network—a complex, many-layered, weighted algorithm modeled after the human brain. Yes, that's the kind of thing you have to do to create a computer program that generates bad poems .

What makes the best AI text generator?

How we evaluate and test apps.

Our best apps roundups are written by humans who've spent much of their careers using, testing, and writing about software. Unless explicitly stated, we spend dozens of hours researching and testing apps, using each app as it's intended to be used and evaluating it against the criteria we set for the category. We're never paid for placement in our articles from any app or for links to any site—we value the trust readers put in us to offer authentic evaluations of the categories and apps we review. We know that most AI text generators rely on the various versions of GPT, and even those that don't are using very similar models, so most apps aren't going to stand out because of some dramatic difference in the quality of their output. Creating effective, human-like text is now table stakes. It was required for inclusion on this list—but not sufficient on its own.

As I was testing these apps, here's what else I was looking for:

Tools powered by GPT or a similar large language model with well-documented efficacy. In practice, this means that most but not all of the AI writing tools on this list use GPT to a greater or lesser degree. Many apps are starting to hide what models they use and claim to have a lot of secret sauce built on top (because there's a marketing advantage in being different and more powerful), but the reality is that nine times out of ten, it's the GPT API that's doing the heavy lifting.

An interface that gives you a lot of control over the text output. The more options you have to influence the tone, style, language, content, and everything else, the better. I didn't want tools where you just entered a headline and let the AI do the rest; these are all tools that you collaborate with, so you can write great copy quickly. The best AI writing tools also let you set a default brand voice that's always on.

Ease of use. You shouldn't have to fight to get the AI to do what you want. With AI writing software like this, there will always be some redoing and reshaping to get the exact output you want, but working with the AI shouldn't feel like wrangling a loose horse. Similarly, great help docs and good onboarding were both a major plus. 

Affordability. ChatGPT is currently free, and all these tools are built on top of an API that costs pennies . There was no hard and fast price limit, but the more expensive tools had to justify the extra expense with better features and a nicer app. After all, almost every app will produce pretty similar outputs regardless of what it costs. 

Apps that weren't designed to make spam content. Previous text-generating tools could " spin " content by changing words to synonyms so that unscrupulous website owners could rip off copyrighted material and generally create lots of low-quality, low-value content. None of that on this list.

Even with these criteria, I had more than 40 different AI writing tools to test. Remember: it's relatively easy for a skilled developer to build a wrapper around the GPT API, so I had to dig deep into each one to find out if it was any good or just had a flashy marketing site.

I tested each app by getting it to write a number of different short- and long-form bits of copy, but as expected, there were very few meaningful quality differences. Instead, it was the overall user experience, depth of features, and affordability that determined whether an app made this list.

Jasper pros:

One of the most mature and feature-filled options on the list

Jasper (formerly Jarvis) is one of the most feature-filled and powerful AI content generators. It was among the first wave of apps built on top of GPT, and its relative longevity means that it feels like a more mature tool than most of the other apps I tested. It's continued to grow and develop in the months since I first compiled this list.

If you have a business and budget isn't your primary concern, Jasper should be one of the first apps you try. It's pivoted to mostly focus on marketing campaigns rather than just generating generic AI content. That's not a bad thing, but it means that plans now start at $49/month for individual creators and $125/month for teams.

Jasper has also moved away from just being a GPT app. It claims to combine "several large language models" including GPT-4, Claude 2, and PaLM 2, so that "you get the highest quality outputs and superior uptime." While I can't say that I noticed a massive difference between Jasper's output and any other app's, it does give you a few solid controls so that your content matches your brand. 

You can create a brand Voice and Tone by uploading some appropriate sample text. Based on a few examples of my writing, Jasper created a style that "emphasizes a casual, conversational tone with humor, personal anecdotes, listicles, informal language, expertise in various subjects, and a call to action for an engaging and approachable brand voice." I don't think that's a bad summary of the content I fed in, and its output for a few test blog posts like "The Enduring Popularity of Top Gun" felt closer to my writing than when I asked it to use a generic casual tone of voice. Similarly, there's a Knowledge Base where you can add facts about your business and products so Jasper gets important details right. 

While other apps also offer similar features, Jasper's seemed to work better and are fully integrated with the rest of the app. For example, you can create entire marketing campaigns using your custom brand voice. Put a bit of work into fine-tuning it and uploading the right assets to your knowledge base, and I suspect that Jasper really could create some solid first drafts of marketing materials like blog outlines, social media campaign ads, and the like.

Otherwise, Jasper rounds things out with some nice integrations. It has a built-in ChatGPT competitor and AI art generator (though, again, lots of other apps have both), plays nice with the SEO app Surfer , and there's a browser extension to bring Jasper everywhere.

Expensive if you don't produce a lot of content

Pretty much anything Jasper can do, Copy.ai can do too. It has brand voices, an infobase, a chatbot, and team features (though there isn't a browser extension). Consider it the Burger King to Jasper's McDonalds.

And like the Home of the Whopper, Copy.ai appeals to slightly different tastes. While I could argue that Copy.ai has a nicer layout, the reality is it's geared toward a slightly different workflow. While Jasper lets you and the AI loose, Copy.ai slows things down a touch and encourages you to work with its chatbot or use a template that asks some deliberate, probing questions. For creating website copy, social media captions , product descriptions, and similarly specific things, it makes more sense. But for content marketing blog posts and other long-form content, it might annoy you.

The other big difference is the pricing. While both offer plans for $49/month, Copy.ai includes five user seats and unlimited brand voices. For a small team working with multiple brands, it can be a lot cheaper. Also, if you're looking for a free AI writing generator, Copy.ai also offers a free plan that includes 2,000 words per month.

Overall, there are more similarities than differences between Jasper and Copy.ai , and both can create almost all the same kinds of text. Even when it came to analyzing my voice, they both came to pretty similar conclusions. Copy.ai decided that, to mimic me, it had to "focus on creating content that is both educational and entertaining, using a conversational tone that makes readers feel like they're having a chat with a knowledgeable friend" and "not to be afraid to inject some humor or personal anecdotes." If you're in doubt, try them both out and then decide.

While you can direct the AI to include certain details and mention specific facts for every app on this list, none make it as easy as Anyword. More than any of the others, the AI here feels like an eager and moderately competent underling that requires a bit of micromanaging (and can also try to mimic your writing style and brand voice), rather than a beast that you have to tame with arcane prompts. 

Take one of its main content-generating tools: the Blog Wizard. Like with Copy.ai, the setup process requires you to describe the blog post you want the AI to create and add any SEO keywords you want to target. Anyword then generates a range of titles for you to choose from, along with a predicted engagement score. 

Once you've chosen a title—or written your own—it generates a suggested outline. Approve it, and you get the option for it to create an entire ~2,000-word blog post (boo!) or a blank document where you can prompt it with additional instructions for each section of the outline, telling it things like what facts to mention, what style to take, and what details to cover. There's also a chatbot-like research sidebar that you can ask questions of and solicit input from. While certainly a slower process than most apps, it gives you a serious amount of control over the content you're creating.

Anyword is definitely aimed at marketers, and its other tools—like the Data-Driven Editor and the Website Targeted Message—all allow you to target your content toward specific audiences and give things engagement scores. While I certainly can't confirm the validity of any of these scores, they at least pass the sniff test. I generally thought the AI-generated content that Anyword scored higher was better—and even when I disagreed, I still liked one of the top options.

It's still an AI text generator, so it can produce nonsensical metaphors, clichéd plots, incoherent action, and has a short memory for details 

Very controversial in fiction writing circles

When I saw Sudowrite's marketing copy, I didn't think for a second it would make it onto this list. Then I tried it and…I kind of love it. Sudowrite is a totally different tool than all the others on this list because it's aimed at fiction writers. And with that, comes a lot of controversy. Sudowrite has been called " an insult to writers everywhere " and has been generally dismissed as a tool for hacks by a lot of Very Online writers. And while it's true that it's nowhere close to replacing a human author, it's fun, functional, and can genuinely help with writing a work of fiction. 

The Story Engine feature, which allows you to generate a full work of fiction over a few days by progressively generating each story beat, has attracted the most attention ( it works but takes lots of hand-holding and your novel will be weird ). But I prefer its assistive tools.

Let's start with Describe. Select a word or phrase, click Describe , and the AI will generate a few suggestions for the sight, smell, taste, sound, and touch of the thing, as well as a couple of metaphors. If you're the kind of writer who struggles to add sensory depth to your short stories, it can help you get into the habit of describing things in more interesting ways.

Then there's Brainstorm. It allows you to use the AI to generate possible dialogue options, character names and traits, plot points, places, and other details about your world from your descriptions and cues. If you know you want a big hairy guy with a huge sword but can't think of a good name, it can suggest a few, like Thorgrim and Bohart.

And these are just scratching the surface. Sure, if you over-rely on the AI to solve all your problems, you'll probably end up with an impressively generic story. But if you use it as a writing buddy to bounce ideas off and get you out of a rut, it's got serious potential. 

Best of all, Sudowrite is super easy to use. The onboarding, tool tips, and general helpful vibe of the app are something other developers could learn from.

Best AI text generator for a non-GPT option

Writer (web).

Writer, our pick for the best AI writing generator that doesn't use GPT

Writer pros:

Not based on GPT, so free of a lot of the controversy surrounding LLMs

Surprisingly capable as an editor, making sure your team sticks to the style guide and doesn't make any wild claims

Writer cons:

Requires a lot more setup to get the most from

GPT comes with quite a lot of baggage. OpenAI has been less than transparent about exactly what data was used to create the various versions of GPT-3 and GPT-4, and it's facing various lawsuits over the use of copyrighted material in its training dataset. No one is really denying that protected materials— potentially from pirated databases —were used to train GPT; the question is just whether or not it falls under fair use. 

For most people, this is a nebulous situation filled with edge cases and gray areas. Realistically, it's going to be years before it's all sorted out, and even then, things will have moved on so far that the results of any lawsuit are likely to be redundant. But for businesses that want to use AI writing tools without controversy attached, GPT is a no-go—and will be for the foreseeable future. 

Which is where Writer comes in.

Feature-wise, Writer is much the same as any of my top picks. (Though creating a specific brand voice that's automatically used is an Enterprise-only feature; otherwise, you have to use a lot of checkboxes in the settings to set the tone.) Some features, like the chatbot, are a little less useful than they are in the GPT-powered apps, but really, they're not why you'd choose Writer.

Where it stands out is the transparency around its Palmyra LLM . For example, you can request and inspect a copy of its training dataset that's composed of data that is "distributed free of any copyright restrictions." Similarly, Palmyra's code and model weights (which determines its outputs) can be audited, it can be hosted on your own servers, and your data is kept secure and not used for training by default. As an AI-powered tool, it's as above board as it comes.

In addition to generating text, Writer can work as a company-specific Grammarly-like editor, keeping on top of legal compliance, ensuring you don't make any unsupported claims, and checking that everything matches your style guide—even when humans are writing the text. As someone who routinely has to follow style guides, this seems like an incredibly useful feature. I wasn't able to test it fully since I don't have a personal style guide to input, but Writer correctly fixed things based on all the rules that I set.

In side-by-side comparisons, Writer's text generations sometimes felt a little weaker than the ones from Jasper or Copy.ai, but I suspect a lot of that was down to how things were configured. Writer is designed as a tool for companies to set up and train with their own data, not run right out of the box. I'd guess my random blog posts were a poor test of how it should be used in the real world.

While almost all the tools on this list use GPT, most are pretty vague about which particular version of it they use at any given time. This matters because the most basic version of the GPT-3.5 Turbo API costs $0.002/1K tokens (roughly 750 words), while GPT-4 starts at $0.06/1K tokens, and the most powerful version costs $0.12/1K tokens. All this suggests that most apps may not use GPT-4 in all circumstances, and instead probably rely on one of the more modest (though still great) GPT-3 models for most text generation. 

If having the latest and greatest AI model matters to you, Writesonic is the app for you. Writesonic doesn't hide what AI model it uses. It even allows you to choose between using GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, at least on Business plans. 

Whether the content you create will benefit from the extra power of GPT-4 or not depends. In my experience using GPT-4 through ChatGPT, the latest model is more accurate and, essentially, more sensible in how it responds. If you're churning out low-stakes copy variations for your product listings, you likely won't see much improvement. On the other hand, for long-form original blog posts, it could make a difference. Either way, the transparency in which model you're using at any given time is a huge bonus. 

Feature-wise, Writesonic is much the same as any of the other apps on this list, with a Google Docs-style editor, the option to set a brand voice, a few dozen copy templates, a chatbot, a browser extension, and Surfer integration. It's cool that you can set reference articles when you're generating a blog post, but it introduces the real possibility of inadvertent plagiarism if you aren't careful with how you use it. (Its most offbeat feature is a surprisingly solid AI-powered custom chatbot builder that's due to be spun out into its own app soon.) Overall, it's pretty nice to use and skews more toward SEO-optimized content marketing—but like with all the apps, you can use it to generate whatever you want.

Most of the apps on this list are aimed at professionals, businesses, and anyone else with a budget. The Jasper, Copy.ai, and Anyword plans I considered all started at $49/month. That isn't exactly a hobbyist-friendly sum of money, so if you want to explore AI text generators without spending as much, give Rytr a go.

There's a free plan that's good for 10,000 characters (around 2,500 words) per month, and it includes a lot of the features, like a plagiarism checker, and a few AI-generated images. The Saver plan starts at $9/month and allows you to generate 100,000 characters (around 25,000 words) per month. On that plan, you're also able to generate up to 20 images a month, which many other apps charge extra for. (There's also an unlimited plan for $29/month, but at that point, Writesonic is a better value.)

Feature-wise, there are some trade-offs. Rytr is a little less competent at generating long-form content without you guiding it through the process, and there are fewer templates for specific things. The interface also isn't as polished, and there isn't as much hand-holding to get you started. Still, as Rytr is using GPT like almost all the other apps on this list, you should be able to get it to produce substantially similar output.

Other AI writing tools to consider

With so many AI text-generating tools out there, a few good ones worth considering didn't make this list, only because they didn't meet my initial criteria in some way. If none of the AI writers I chose fit the bill for you, here are a few other options worth looking into:

ChatGPT is surprisingly competent and fun to use. And best of all, it's free. ( Google Bard is a little less excellent on the content production side.) 

Wordtune and Grammarly are both great tools for editing and improving your own writing .  GrammarlyGO just isn't as flexible as my other picks.

Notion AI adds a powerful AI tool directly into Notion. If you already use Notion, it's worth checking out, but it's a lot to learn if you just want a text generator. (Same goes for AI within any other Notion alternative, like Coda AI .)

Surfer and Frase are both AI-powered SEO tools . They fell slightly out of scope for this list, but they can both help you optimize and improve your content—AI-generated or not. 

All of the apps on this list offer at the very least a free trial, so I'd suggest trying some of them out for a few minutes until you find the one that seems to work best with your workflow.

AI content creation tools have become much more accessible and mainstream since the release of ChatGPT and Gemini (previously known as Bard) by Google.

Since then, we have seen an accelerated uptake in the use of AI tools – and especially in AI content generation.

Revisiting an article we wrote pre-ChatGPT, we have reassessed our original list of tools to road-test AI content generators and see how their output compares.

How ChatGPT Is Changing The Content Industry

OpenAI has led the development of large language models and generative AI. In May 2020, GPT-3 was launched, which was a huge leap forward in quality from the predecessor GPT-2.

AI content writers began to improve greatly, and as we reported in the last version of this article, there were several content generator tools that all provided reasonable results.

Then, in November 2022, OpenAI launched ChatGPT and opened up access to GPT-3.5 through an easy-to-access interface.

This resulted in an explosion of interest and uptake in the use of generative AI. By the end of January 2023, ChatGPT had 100 million users and was officially the fastest-growing app in history.

Many of the tools listed below (apart from Gemini) are all based on GPT-3.5 or GPT-4.

Bard (now called Gemini) , developed by Google Deepmind, was launched quickly in response to ChatGPT in February 2023 .

The other main contender is Claude from Anthropic, launched in March 2023 . But, at this time, Claude doesn’t have the mainstream dominance that ChatGPT holds.

Following the introduction of these generative AI tools and their mainstream adoption, there have been plenty of discussions about ethics, the impact on creativity, and the impact on jobs.

In a meta self-referential message, Gemini (Bard) even offers this message in response to the prompt “AI Content Creation.”

The Drawbacks Of Using AI Writers

With easy access to AI content writing tools, the content production industry is changing.

Many websites have adopted AI as a tool for mass production and others are doubling down on the quality of human-written content where AI content generators cannot compare.

Generative AI is causing a lot of disruption in SEO and content creation. In reaction to this, there has been pushback from businesses that this could impact – such as the NYT suing Open AI for training its LLM on their content without approval.

What this means is that, right now, there are unresolved issues of fair use, copyright, privacy, security, and bias. It could result in a dispute over the ownership and copyright of AI-generated content.

There are many legal and ethical issues arising, including the impact on creativity and the jobs it might displace.

At SEJ, we consider generative AI a useful tool to support content writers and SEO professionals but not a replacement for human content writers (see use cases at the end of the article).

Apart from these problems, generative AI also has the following disadvantages:

  • Hallucinations and misinformation. Unless you understand your topic in-depth, you won’t know what you don’t know and cannot take the output from a chatbot for written facts.
  • Writing style can be unnatural, with an unusual choice of words that is jarring to read.
  • Getting the best results takes considerable skill and understanding of writing and using prompts.

Another major flaw is that if everyone is using an AI tool to target the same keywords, then where is the differentiating factor to what you are creating?

What will make your brand stand out and resonate with your audience?

For these reasons, SEJ recommends that you do not use generative AI to create content that you intend to publish.

Generative AI can be excellent for productivity and speeding up content production. But, you need someone who knows their subject and is a good writer behind the wheel to get results worthy of using.

A content marketer can truly benefit from generative AI as an efficient tool to make repetitive tasks easier and output faster. In those terms, the use of all kinds of AI will become more and more seamlessly integrated into marketing.

10 AI Content Creation Tools Compared

All the content generator tools we tested were fed the same simple phrase: ‘AI content creation.’

We compared the use of the tool and the quality of the content output. You can see that output in each of the screenshots below.

As part of the comparison, we also ran all the content through Copyscape to check for plagiarism.

What has become apparent in the last few years since the previous version of this article is that ChatGPT and Gemini are set to dominate. Because of this, other AI writing tools will have to offer much more to differentiate and compete against them.

For the purposes of this article, we only tested tools that had a free option available. This list of AI writers is simply a selection of the most popular tools on the market and not our personal recommendation, nor a fully inclusive list of all tools available in the market.

ChatGPT example

ChatGPT is built on GPT-3.5 for free users and GPT-4 for paying subscribers.

ChatGPT is the tool that many of the other AI writers in this list are built on (apart from Gemini) and offers an easy-to-access interface to the powerful GPT LLMs.

The applications of ChatGPT go far beyond just content creation, with its use case experiments being documented almost daily. Learning how to write prompts has become one of the most in-demand skills in the last year.

ChatGPT also has GPTs which are plugin tools that can complete set tasks. A bit like templates or extensions for Sheets or add-ons for Chrome – expect this to become a fast-developing area.

Out of the box, ChatGPT appears easy to use, but the challenge is writing specific and tailored prompts to get the best results.

However, simply typing in “AI content creation” did generate 338 words of a comprehensive description that could be the basis of a human-written article.

The free version is an excellent starting point, and the premium Plus version allows access to the additional tools.

OpenAI provides ChatGPT in varied pricing tiers: ChatGPT Plus at $20/month for individuals, ChatGPT Team at $25 per person/month for teams, and a customizable ChatGPT Enterprise plan for larger organizational needs.

2. Gemini (previously Bard)

Gemini (Bard) , by Google Deepmind, is a Large Language Model tool built on the Gemini platform . Much the same as ChatGPT, Gemini is an infinitely powerful tool that has exponential applications.

The potential applications for content producers as a tool to help with content creation are endless. We expect that, between ChatGPT and Gemini, most SEO professionals and content creators will use one of these tools daily.

Gemini is very easy to use with the minimalist interface you would expect from Google.

In output terms, Gemini has different nuances to ChatGPT, as you would expect, built on different models. Using each of the tools on a regular basis highlights where each differs and excels to get the best results.

The output from Gemini is sometimes better than ChatGPT – or just different. However, information can be disjointed, and all information must be fact-checked, as both tools have a tendency to make things up with hallucinations.

One important point to note was that Gemini did flag two results in our Copyscape plagiarism check. ChatGPT did not flag any.

Gemini is available as a free version and Gemini Advance is priced at $19.99 per month just undercutting ChatGPT.

3. Writesonic

Writesonic example

Writesonic is built on GPT-4 and is based on facilitating marketing copy, blog articles, and product descriptions. The generator can also provide content ideas and outlines, and has a full suite of templates for different types of content.

Writesonic has a variety of different tools for different purposes, but on the free trial, we didn’t have access to most of them.

We tested the article writing tool, and it was very easy to use. The article read well, but please remember all of the caveats above. This is an interesting test of the tool’s capabilities, but we don’t suggest directly publishing the outputs of generative AI, and it’s our internal policy not to do so.

Writesonic’s unique selling points include integrating with Google Search for more up-to-date content and providing sources.

The platform offers a free version with basic features, while paid plans range from $13 to $500 monthly. Enterprise solutions are available with customized pricing to fit the needs of larger organizations.

  • Features designed for SEO optimization.
  • Support for creating content in 30 different languages.
  • API access, bulk processing, and integrations for scalability and efficiency.

Copy.ai example

Copy.ai is an AI-driven platform that claims to automate various sales and marketing tasks, from cold outreach to content repurposing.

Copy.ai provides templates across a variety of content types, such as blogs, ads, sales, websites, and social media. The generator also provides translation into 25 languages.

Copy.ai differentiates by offering a zero-retention data policy, claiming that user inputs are never retained or used for training purposes, which could be crucial for privacy-conscious organizations. It says it only works with language models that adhere to this strict data policy.

From the three-word phrase input, the tool produced a long article about the subject without any additional prompting.

The quality was good, and we found that it would be difficult to discern that this was machine-generated. The output appears to have improved since we tested it last. Again, this doesn’t change the fact that writing final content outputs is not a use case that we suggest for these tools.

Copy.ai has a free plan, and paid plans range from $36/month for Pro to $3,000/month for Scale.

5. HyperWrite

 HyperWrite example

HyperWrite is an AI-powered writing tool that claims to assist with creating marketing copy, conducting research, and improving overall writing and communication skills. It offers a Chrome extension for ease of use across various web platforms.

Hyperwriter looks a lot like ChatGPT, and the output returned was very similar to what we achieved directly in ChatGPT. Too similar for coincidence.

It would appear that HyperWrite uses the ChatGPT interface with a simple prompt layered onto the phrase we input. From this test, we don’t see any justification to use this tool over ChatGPT.

 Rytr example

Rytr is an AI writing assistant that claims to help users create high-quality content quickly and cost-effectively.

Rytr offers over 40 use cases, support for 30+ languages, and more than 20 tones of voice.

We found the tool very easy to use and quickly generated an output. However, the content was not as well-written as other writers tested, and the language output did not feel natural and was obviously AI-generated.

There were a few other tools that were nice to use, and we liked the cute poem creator. But, for the task of producing natural-feeling content, it didn’t quite meet the standard.

Rytr offers a monthly free plan with 10K characters, a “Saver” plan at $9/month, and an “Unlimited” plan at $29/month.

  • A plagiarism checker.
  • Integration with apps like WordPress and Shopify.
  • 30 languages supported.

7. LongShot

LongShot example

LongShot pitches itself as an AI-powered long-form content assistant and is built on a combination of GPT-3 and custom AI models. It tries to clearly separate from being a replacement content writer.

The platform has over 30 tools, including keyword research, rephrasing, and blog ideas, and you can write in 8 languages. Be aware that you should scrutinize any research or fact-checking claims that AI tools make carefully, we have yet to meet an AI tool we would be comfortable using for those purposes without checking the veracity of the outputs in depth.

To use LongShot as a writer, you have to go through a process of selecting suggested headlines before the tool generates an article outline and then a final output.

On a similar level to Copy.ai, LongShot produced an in-depth and relatively well-written article.

LongsShot also includes a feature called FactGPT that is targeted to trending and current topics

The pricing starts with a free trial, a “Pro” plan at $19/month, a ‘Team” plan at $49/month, and customizable pricing for larger needs.

  • Integration with multiple platforms.
  • Supports eight languages.

8. Jasper AI

Jasper AI  claims it will help you write faster, beat writer’s block, and rank better with SEO-optimized content.

They also claim to have consulted with SEO professionals and direct marketing experts to develop how the AI generator writes content.

Jasper AI is geared up for teams and project management as a content marketing platform, not simply an AI writing tool. It focuses on brand voice and has a prompt library and Chrome browser extension.

It differentiates itself through a stated commitment to security and data privacy, with the US-based data centers and a policy that states user data isn’t used for training third-party AI/ML models.

The platform’s messaging also focuses on responsible AI use and keeping data safe with evolving security protocols.

The AI writer was easy to use: enter your keyword and select a few variables such as audience and length. Jasper produced an article that was well-written and formatted.

On a surface level it’s difficult to discern whether this is a machine-written article and not by a human writer.

Jasper AI doesn’t offer any free plans, but it does have a free trial for five days. Be aware you have to input your credit card and you will get charged if you forget to cancel.

“Creator” plan at $39, a “Pro” plan at $59, and a customizable “Business” plan with pricing discussed upon request.

  • Emphasis on security and data privacy with U.S.-based data centers.
  • Integrations with various platforms.

9. Scalenut

Scalenut focuses on integrating the entire SEO content process into one application.

The unique offering of Scalenut includes its Cruise Mode for SEO blog creation, AI that it says keeps updated with current information, and its capability to plan and execute entire content marketing strategies powered by AI.

Tools included in the platform are the content writer, content optimizer, keyword planner, traffic analyzer, and marketing copywriter.

To generate an article, Scalenut goes through the process of offering titles and outlines before you get to the final output in the editor. The tool and interface feel very similar to LongShot.

The actual content output was very good, and much like LongShot, it is difficult to discern from human-written content.

The pricing tiers include an “Essential” plan at $19/month, a “Growth” plan at $39/month, a “Pro” plan at $75/month, and an ‘Enterprise’ option with custom pricing.

  • Advanced keyword planning.
  • Research tools, including NLP Key Terms, competition analysis, and statistics.

10. Anyword

Anyword claims to produce human-like content. It positions itself as a sophisticated solution for marketers and companies aiming to boost their content’s impact.

The tool’s messaging is that it differentiates itself with its ability to analyze historical content performance and generate outputs that align with the brand’s voice, audience targeting, and messaging effectiveness.

Anyword has the usual range of tools from ad copy, social media, meta descriptions, and blog writing. It also offers the capability to train custom AI models on a brand’s best-performing campaigns.

Similar to LongShot and Scalenut, the article generator goes through the process of offering titles to choose from and then a blog structure before generating the final output.

The output is reasonable, but the language used does feel a little unnatural, similar to how ChatGPT can at times. It’s not the best output in this list, but not the worst.

Anyword offers a free 7-day trial, a basic package starting at $39 a month, a $349 business package, and custom pricing for enterprise solutions.

Will AI Take Over Content Creation?

As we said above, a tool cannot make up for a lack of knowledge or ability; it can only enhance it.

You can be assured that content creation will go into overdrive with AI.

On the flip side, good quality journalist standard content with unique data, thought, opinions, and insights will become more in demand as the only way to stand out.

AI is changing fast, and we are all running to keep up with adapting to the new technology, so use your judgment based on developments.

After you’ve found your keywords and angle, the next challenge is figuring out what exactly to talk about. Answer the Public can be a huge help with that.

9) Site:search (Advanced Search Operators)

This is a handy Google hack I use every day. Basically, it allows you to do a Google search that's limited to a particular website.

For example, if I wanted to search HubSpot's blog for marketing resources so I can cite one of our old blog posts, I'd do a site:search for blog.hubspot.com with the search term marketing resources. The formula for site search is site:samplewebsite.com [search query]. So my example would be site:blog.hubspot.com marketing resources.

Doing SEO and keyword research? Your marketing software should be able to help. But if it can't (or you'd like to augment your data), Google Search Console can be a great help. You can check things like the number of indexed pages on your website, submit your site to Google so you're getting crawled and indexed, and even disavow bad inbound links. It also can give you information on search queries that have a large volume of impressions but a low clickthrough rate.

Within Google Search Console, go to "Performance" and choose the "Queries" tab. You'll see a table showing a search query, impressions, clicks, and clickthrough rate (CTR). Comparing this data to your other analytics data can help uncover some new content opportunities.

11) Percentage Change Calculator

I can't even begin to tell you how useful this little calculator is when looking for and analyzing data. Ever want to know the percentage change of two values without having to remember the formula? Simply enter the two values into this calculator, and it'll spit out the percentage change. Trust me, you'll want to bookmark this one.

  • 3-Way Percentage Calculator – Calculates answers to these questions: What is X% of Y? X is what percent of Y? X is Y% of what?
  • Conversion Rate Calculator – Spits out a conversion rate when you enter the total visitor count during a specific time frame and the number of times during that time frame those visitors took a specific action.
  • A/B Test Calculator – Works for a basic scenario with two groups of people (A & B) who get to see one version of your website and for whom you track the number of conversions or goals (purchases, downloads, clickthroughs, etc.).
  • ROI Calculator – Analyzes your website's monthly sales and lead generation efforts to determine ways in which marketing efforts can be optimized.

I use the free version of Evernote every single day. From to-do lists and research notes to writing entire chunks of articles, it's proven helpful at every step of the writing and editing process.

Plus -- and this is super important for content creators like us -- it's constantly saving and syncing your work automatically, making it a safe place to write and store ideas.

Use it to keep a running list of ideas, take notes, store inspiring articles or ebooks, or plan your editorial and social media publishing calendars .

13) Blog Post Templates

All blog posts aren't created equal, but we've found that there are steps you can take to make your posts comprehensive and shareable. With these blog post templates , we'll walk you through an outline to write successful how-to, listicle, newsjack, and curation blog posts. Instead of starting from scratch, you'll save time and, hopefully, nail your blog goals.

14) CoSchedule's Headline Analyzer

Here's a scary stat for you: Only 60% of people who click into an article end up reading past the headline. That makes your headline both the first and possibly the only chance for you to compel readers to keep reading -- so it's totally worth it to spend the extra few minutes coming up with a really good one.

What does a really good headline look like? The free tool Headline Analyzer by CoSchedule can tell you. It scores your headline quality and rates its ability to drive social shares, traffic, and SEO value. In my experience, its strength is helping you strengthen specific components of your title. For example, it reports on perceived sentiment and commonality of word types. It'll even show you how it will appear in search results.

So although you should take these scores and grades with a grain of salt, you can use this to give your headlines a “once-over." (And read this blog post to learn more about writing awesome headlines .)

15) TitleCase

Once you have your perfect title, it’s time to perfect your capitalization. This simple tool automatically capitalizes your titles according to the style you choose– including AP, APA, Chicago, and more.

You can even set exceptions if your own styleguide differs from more traditional rules.

16) OneLook Thesaurus

If you’ve ever struggled to find a word that was right on the tip of your tongue, you’ll understand why I geek out over OneLook thesaurus. OneLook describes itself as a “reverse dictionary.”

If you can’t think of the word you need, OneLook lets you describe it with a phrase or list of words. Then it offers hundreds of related words, synonyms, and even rhyming words.

17) Lose the Very

“[A]void using the word ‘very’ because it’s lazy. A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. Don’t use very sad, use morose.”

This is the advice Robin Williams gave in Dead Poet’s Society, and Lose the Very will help you do just that. This tool isn’t just very useful, it’s instrumental.

18) WordCounter

While data can suggest an ideal, there is no one "right answer" for how long a blog post should be . The important part is that it serves its purpose -- whether that's thought leadership, driving leads, explaining a new concept, or something else.

But although we don't recommend writing blog posts with a word count in mind, sometimes word count can come in handy. WordCounter works exactly the way you think it does: Paste in your content and it'll spit out exactly how many words you have. It also offers reading level, reading time, and speaking time.

19) HubSpot’s Free CMS

Hear me out before you scroll on by. A CMS is not just a place to write your content. (In fact, I prefer not to write it in the CMS.) HubSpot’s free CMS also makes actionable SEO recommendations that can help you optimize your writing.

Plus, the drag-and-drop editor means that your writers can upload their own content without having to also moonlight as programmers.

Here at HubSpot, our bloggers add their finished content directly to the CMS. This makes it easy to collaborate on editing, publishing, and promotion.

20) The Beginner’s Guide to HTML and CSS for Marketers

While this isn't strictly a writing resource, basic coding knowledge is quickly becoming a must-have skill for the modern marketer -- bloggers and written content creators included. But learning from scratch can be daunting. Where on earth do you start?

If you're a total beginner, start with The Beginner’s Guide to HTML and CSS for Marketers , which my colleagues at HubSpot. It'll teach you quick but useful hacks anyone -- regardless of coding knowledge -- can use in their marketing.

For example, you'll learn how to make small changes to HTML like altering headers and spacing, creating text in block-quote form, and inserting social share links. My personal favorite is the hack to change font colors.

Once you've mastered these basic HTML skills, move on to Codeacademy's free interactive courses . They found a way to make learning HTML and CSS actually fun -- and you can go through each lesson at your own pace.

21) Word2CleanHTML

If you like drafting blog posts in programs like Microsoft Word, Evernote, or Google Drive instead of your content management system (CMS), then this simple tool can be your best friend. Why? Because when you copy a document from Microsoft Office and paste it into your CMS, lots of little, weird formatting issues can crop up in your HTML.

Word2CleanHTML applies filters to fix all those things added into the HTML, resulting in well-formatted HTML you can paste directly into a web page CMS. Simply paste in your draft, click one button, and then copy the resulting HTML straight from the tool. When you paste that into your CMS (most will have buttons reading "HTML" or "</>" in their tool bar above your draft), it will appear nice and clean. No hair-pulling or swimming through code required.

23) Grammarly

While human editors will be able to catch most grammatical errors, editing tools like Grammarly are great for triple-checking before you press "publish" or "send."

The free version of Grammarly checks for grammatical errors, clarity, and delivery. The premium version offers advanced advice on word choice, readability, and punctuation– and even checks for plagiarism.

24) Hemingway App

Ernest Hemingway, admired for his succinct writing style, is the namesake for this handy editing app. Want to make your written content easier to read? Paste your content into this free web app, and it'll assess your writing and identify opportunities to make it simpler.

My favorite features include identifying passive voice and hard-to-read sentences. Check out the right-hand side of the screenshot below, where the tool has summed up how readable my writing is with a grade. (Some room for improvement here.) Their suggestion to improve readability overall? Shoot for lower than a 10th grade reading level.

25) Editorial Calendar Template

Creating a balanced editorial calendar can be tough, especially if you don't have one centralized calendar that you and your team can refer to. To save you time and headache, we've created editorial calendar templates for Google Calendar, Google Sheets, and Excel that you can fill in and share with your team to start the next month or year off on the right foot.

26) HubSpot Marketing Hub

An editor’s job is to publish top notch content, but as you likely know, most editors wear a whole host of other hats. HubSpot’s marketing tools are designed to help you execute on all your tasks — from planning content to managing SEO.

What are our favorite features of HubSpot? When you’re trying to grow your readership, adding an embedded or popup form can be a great way to capture the contact information from previously anonymous visitors. This helps grow your mailing lists and consequently build readership to your blog properties.

We also really love the ability to track and report on marketing KPIs for individual pages. This allows you to make data-driven editorial decisions to make sure your content is working.

27) Movavi Video Editor

Movavi Video Editor is a handy movie editor for all content creators that allows you to make social media hits in no time. Easily edit your footage – crop, trim, and resize clips. Add awesome filters and music. Take your content to the next level with thrilling effects: use titles, overlays, transitions, and intros. Play around with slow motion, color correction, and chroma key. Take advantage of this free video-editing software to wow your audience.

28) WebFX Readability Test

Unless you’re writing furniture assembly instructions, it’s important that your content is easy to read and easy to digest.

The WebFX readability test grades your content according to five different academic scales, then averages them together into one score. You’ll also get statistics about word complexity and the density of your sentences.

There are many similar tests available, but I like that WebFX allows you to paste in your text, or simply input a URL.

29) StackEdit

StackEdit is a markdown editor. In plain English, that means it turns your text into HTML. Or your HTML into text. This one can also render math equations, flow charts, diagrams, and ASCII characters.

Why would an editor need this? Because it can give you a live preview of what your content will look like as you edit it. This is extremely helpful if you happen to write about technical topics or coding.

30 & 31) Nimbus Screenshot & Screen Video Recorder

This is another tool I use every day. Sure, you can capture a screenshot of your entire screen or part of your screen using the old keyboard shortcut method . But what if you want your screenshot to include stuff that's not visible on your screen?

Nimbus Screenshot lets you capture the visible part of a web page, a selected area, a selected scroll (my personal favorite), the entire page, or the entire browser window -- including everything below the fold.

The Chrome extension also lets you record video from your screen or webcam, then convert it to gif or mp4 format.

Once you've taken the screenshot or screencast, you can crop, edit, annotate (like adding notes and callouts), and choose to print or save to your desktop or Google Drive.

If you like creating beautiful visual content in a really short amount of time, you'll love Canva. The time and resources it takes to learn design, pay for design assets, and/or get inspired to create beauty from scratch can be really difficult when you're staring at a long list of to-dos -- but Canva offers a huge library of pre-made templates and assets that you can manipulate while also adding your own imagery.

Best of all, they have so many assets and graphics available for free that you won't have to pay a cent if you don't want to. If you want to use more "premium" assets and graphics found through their image search, they'll charge you $1 for each. But there's plenty of value for free.

Skitch is a free app by Evernote that helps you communicate more visually. It lets you mark up images, digital assets, PDFs, and other files with arrows, callout boxes, text, and more all in one place.

In the example below, I opened the program on my desktop and used the "Screen Snap" button to take a screenshot of a web page -- which then opened right in Skitch for editing and exporting.

Although it's free, it does require you to open an Evernote account -- but that's also free (see above).

34) Infogram

While similar to Canva, Infogram is a visual content tool that focuses on helping you create infographics, charts, and data visualization. If you like to create charts using Microsoft Excel, you're in luck -- it also offers compatibility with Excel through Infogram Charts. Also, their infographics are responsive with mobile devices.

35) Infographic Templates

As a content marketer, you might feel more comfortable creating written content than visual content, but that's no excuse to exclude infographics from your strategy. Visual content is growing in demand from your audience, and infographics are particularly shareable.

36) Google Fonts

Want to spruce up your site pages, presentations, ebooks, and other content with cool and different new fonts? Little-known fact: Google has a directory of 600 free fonts ready for you to download and use.

Simply find and select the fonts you like from their directory , then click "Use" to get the HTML code you can copy and paste onto your site. Alternatively, you can download the fonts to your desktop and use them when making new marketing content by clicking "Add to Collection." 37) Image Color Picker

Remember that time you wanted to match your call-to-action design to that color you were using on all your event swag ... but the one person who would know what that color was didn't work at your company anymore?

Next time that happens, snag a picture of that swag and upload it to ImageColorPicker.com , or use any image URL to do the same thing. Select any point of the picture, and immediately see its corresponding HEX, RGB, and HSV values.

40) Haiku Deck

If you've ever had to create a PowerPoint or SlideShare presentation in a pinch, you'll wish you knew about Haiku Deck. This tool helps you quickly find simple layouts, beautiful images, and great fonts. It's available for the web and for iPad.

41) HubSpot's Free Stock Photos

Searching for and buying stock imagery can be a pain in the you-know-what -- especially when it comes to deciphering legalese for different use cases. I have a liberal arts degree, and Nietzsche was easier to read than whatever legalese stock imagery companies tended to give me. All I wanted to know is whether to cite or not cite a stock image of a laptop. Why was it so hard?

That's why our team decided to create a library of 550+ free and royalty-free stock photos . Whether it's a unique image needed for an ebook or that perfect photo you want to add to a blog post, that collection should have you covered. Here's one of our "around the kitchen" stock photos -- yum.

42) PlaceIt

PlaceIt serves a very specific purpose: It allows you to upload images of your site or product into real-world environments of people holding phones, tablets, and laptops. PlaceIt will automatically alter the image to make it appear natural with the angle of the phone's screen -- which will save you time learning and/or editing in more advanced software to get the angle right.

You'll have to pay per image to get really large or high-resolution versions, though I've found free images work just fine for blog posts and product page content. The paid downloads also remove that PlaceIt watermark from the bottom right.

43) LICEcap

Looking for the perfect GIF to include in your blog post? If it doesn't already exist on Giphy, you can make one yourself using LICEcap. Film a screenshot and turn it into a GIF using this handy, free tool -- we use LICEcap for our blog posts , too.

44 & 45) The Noun Project & ICONS8

Like with stock photos, another challenge content creators face is finding elegant icons that resize without getting all fuzzy. There are a few resources out there for great, resizable icons.

The Noun Project is an extensive library of thousands of icons uploaded by contributors. With a free account, you can use icons as long as you either give credit to the creator or purchase them royalty-free for $1.99 apiece.

In addition to free icons, ICONS8 also offers stock photos, illustrations, and AI-generated faces. Many of these are available completely free, provided you include attribution and a link.

46) Cofftivity

According to a study out of the University of Chicago , "[a] moderate level of ambient noise is conducive to creative cognition." In other words, being the tiniest bit distracted actually helps you be more creative. That's why, for many people– myself included– white noise helps promote focus.

There are a lot of white noise generators out there, but my favorite is Cofftivity. This particular one offers non-stop café background sounds at varying intensities, from "Morning Murmur" and "University Undertones" to "Lunchtime Lounge" and "Brazil Bistro." It's available on the web and as an app on iOS and Android.

47) TomatoTimers

If you’ve never heard of the Pomodoro technique, your life might be about to change forever. Pomodoro is a productivity hack that consists of working in 25 minute intervals separated by taking short, regular breaks. This cycle helps you to resist distractions, and makes bigger projects seem like less-daunting, bite-sized tasks.

But remembering where you’re at in a cycle, and constantly re-setting your timer can be a bit of a hassle.

Enter the TomatoTimer. This free tool is a simple, looping timer that keeps track of your Pomodoro cycle for you. So you can spend less time messing with timers, and more time being productive.

Trello is a kanban-style project management tool, and it’s way more powerful than you’d expect free software to be. Their unique layout of cards and lists is well-suited for organizing content calendars, writing sprints, collaborative projects, and more.

Plus, it integrates with hundreds of other tools– including Slack, Google Drive, Mailchimp, and yes, even HubSpot.

If you’re like me, you’ve always got 100 tabs open, both literally and metaphorically. OneTab is designed to help out with the literal ones.

This browser extension instantly turns your open tabs into a list of URLs that you can save, export, or share. It even retains the list if your browser crashes or you restart your computer. Then, when you’re ready to use that tab again, you can click it to go right back to where you were.

50) Giphy Search

You know that coworker who always seems to find the perfect animated GIFs for your social posts or internal chat client? With the free Giphy Chrome extension, you'll be able to find great GIFs just as quickly.

To use the tool, all you have to do is open the extension in Chrome, search, choose a GIF, and drag and drop. So far, the tool works in Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, and more -- and they're constantly expanding support.

It's Not the Wand, It's the Wizard

The tools and resources listed above can help you create, but it's ultimately up to you to control the quality of your content. You still need to know your customer incredibly well, understand what challenges they face that your product or service solves, and create content that helps them address those challenges.

The brains and heart behind the content creator trump the code behind any tools and technology -- and that's a good thing for succeeding in marketing today.

Today, we’re excited to share the first two models of the next generation of Llama, Meta Llama 3, available for broad use. This release features pretrained and instruction-fine-tuned language models with 8B and 70B parameters that can support a broad range of use cases. This next generation of Llama demonstrates state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of industry benchmarks and offers new capabilities, including improved reasoning. We believe these are the best open source models of their class, period. In support of our longstanding open approach, we’re putting Llama 3 in the hands of the community. We want to kickstart the next wave of innovation in AI across the stack—from applications to developer tools to evals to inference optimizations and more. We can’t wait to see what you build and look forward to your feedback.

Our goals for Llama 3

With Llama 3, we set out to build the best open models that are on par with the best proprietary models available today. We wanted to address developer feedback to increase the overall helpfulness of Llama 3 and are doing so while continuing to play a leading role on responsible use and deployment of LLMs. We are embracing the open source ethos of releasing early and often to enable the community to get access to these models while they are still in development. The text-based models we are releasing today are the first in the Llama 3 collection of models. Our goal in the near future is to make Llama 3 multilingual and multimodal, have longer context, and continue to improve overall performance across core LLM capabilities such as reasoning and coding.

State-of-the-art performance

Our new 8B and 70B parameter Llama 3 models are a major leap over Llama 2 and establish a new state-of-the-art for LLM models at those scales. Thanks to improvements in pretraining and post-training, our pretrained and instruction-fine-tuned models are the best models existing today at the 8B and 70B parameter scale. Improvements in our post-training procedures substantially reduced false refusal rates, improved alignment, and increased diversity in model responses. We also saw greatly improved capabilities like reasoning, code generation, and instruction following making Llama 3 more steerable.

In the development of Llama 3, we looked at model performance on standard benchmarks and also sought to optimize for performance for real-world scenarios. To this end, we developed a new high-quality human evaluation set. This evaluation set contains 1,800 prompts that cover 12 key use cases: asking for advice, brainstorming, classification, closed question answering, coding, creative writing, extraction, inhabiting a character/persona, open question answering, reasoning, rewriting, and summarization. To prevent accidental overfitting of our models on this evaluation set, even our own modeling teams do not have access to it. The chart below shows aggregated results of our human evaluations across of these categories and prompts against Claude Sonnet, Mistral Medium, and GPT-3.5.

Preference rankings by human annotators based on this evaluation set highlight the strong performance of our 70B instruction-following model compared to competing models of comparable size in real-world scenarios.

To develop a great language model, we believe it’s important to innovate, scale, and optimize for simplicity. We adopted this design philosophy throughout the Llama 3 project with a focus on four key ingredients: the model architecture, the pretraining data, scaling up pretraining, and instruction fine-tuning.

Model architecture

In line with our design philosophy, we opted for a relatively standard decoder-only transformer architecture in Llama 3. Compared to Llama 2, we made several key improvements. Llama 3 uses a tokenizer with a vocabulary of 128K tokens that encodes language much more efficiently, which leads to substantially improved model performance. To improve the inference efficiency of Llama 3 models, we’ve adopted grouped query attention (GQA) across both the 8B and 70B sizes. We trained the models on sequences of 8,192 tokens, using a mask to ensure self-attention does not cross document boundaries.

Training data

To train the best language model, the curation of a large, high-quality training dataset is paramount. In line with our design principles, we invested heavily in pretraining data. Llama 3 is pretrained on over 15T tokens that were all collected from publicly available sources. Our training dataset is seven times larger than that used for Llama 2, and it includes four times more code. To prepare for upcoming multilingual use cases, over 5% of the Llama 3 pretraining dataset consists of high-quality non-English data that covers over 30 languages. However, we do not expect the same level of performance in these languages as in English.

To ensure Llama 3 is trained on data of the highest quality, we developed a series of data-filtering pipelines. These pipelines include using heuristic filters, NSFW filters, semantic deduplication approaches, and text classifiers to predict data quality. We found that previous generations of Llama are surprisingly good at identifying high-quality data, hence we used Llama 2 to generate the training data for the text-quality classifiers that are powering Llama 3.

We also performed extensive experiments to evaluate the best ways of mixing data from different sources in our final pretraining dataset. These experiments enabled us to select a data mix that ensures that Llama 3 performs well across use cases including trivia questions, STEM, coding, historical knowledge, etc.

Scaling up pretraining

To effectively leverage our pretraining data in Llama 3 models, we put substantial effort into scaling up pretraining. Specifically, we have developed a series of detailed scaling laws for downstream benchmark evaluations. These scaling laws enable us to select an optimal data mix and to make informed decisions on how to best use our training compute. Importantly, scaling laws allow us to predict the performance of our largest models on key tasks (for example, code generation as evaluated on the HumanEval benchmark—see above) before we actually train the models. This helps us ensure strong performance of our final models across a variety of use cases and capabilities.

We made several new observations on scaling behavior during the development of Llama 3. For example, while the Chinchilla-optimal amount of training compute for an 8B parameter model corresponds to ~200B tokens, we found that model performance continues to improve even after the model is trained on two orders of magnitude more data. Both our 8B and 70B parameter models continued to improve log-linearly after we trained them on up to 15T tokens. Larger models can match the performance of these smaller models with less training compute, but smaller models are generally preferred because they are much more efficient during inference.

To train our largest Llama 3 models, we combined three types of parallelization: data parallelization, model parallelization, and pipeline parallelization. Our most efficient implementation achieves a compute utilization of over 400 TFLOPS per GPU when trained on 16K GPUs simultaneously. We performed training runs on two custom-built 24K GPU clusters . To maximize GPU uptime, we developed an advanced new training stack that automates error detection, handling, and maintenance. We also greatly improved our hardware reliability and detection mechanisms for silent data corruption, and we developed new scalable storage systems that reduce overheads of checkpointing and rollback. Those improvements resulted in an overall effective training time of more than 95%. Combined, these improvements increased the efficiency of Llama 3 training by ~three times compared to Llama 2.

Instruction fine-tuning

To fully unlock the potential of our pretrained models in chat use cases, we innovated on our approach to instruction-tuning as well. Our approach to post-training is a combination of supervised fine-tuning (SFT), rejection sampling, proximal policy optimization (PPO), and direct preference optimization (DPO). The quality of the prompts that are used in SFT and the preference rankings that are used in PPO and DPO has an outsized influence on the performance of aligned models. Some of our biggest improvements in model quality came from carefully curating this data and performing multiple rounds of quality assurance on annotations provided by human annotators.

Learning from preference rankings via PPO and DPO also greatly improved the performance of Llama 3 on reasoning and coding tasks. We found that if you ask a model a reasoning question that it struggles to answer, the model will sometimes produce the right reasoning trace: The model knows how to produce the right answer, but it does not know how to select it. Training on preference rankings enables the model to learn how to select it.

Building with Llama 3

Our vision is to enable developers to customize Llama 3 to support relevant use cases and to make it easier to adopt best practices and improve the open ecosystem. With this release, we’re providing new trust and safety tools including updated components with both Llama Guard 2 and Cybersec Eval 2, and the introduction of Code Shield—an inference time guardrail for filtering insecure code produced by LLMs.

We’ve also co-developed Llama 3 with torchtune , the new PyTorch-native library for easily authoring, fine-tuning, and experimenting with LLMs. torchtune provides memory efficient and hackable training recipes written entirely in PyTorch. The library is integrated with popular platforms such as Hugging Face, Weights & Biases, and EleutherAI and even supports Executorch for enabling efficient inference to be run on a wide variety of mobile and edge devices. For everything from prompt engineering to using Llama 3 with LangChain we have a comprehensive getting started guide and takes you from downloading Llama 3 all the way to deployment at scale within your generative AI application.

A system-level approach to responsibility

We have designed Llama 3 models to be maximally helpful while ensuring an industry leading approach to responsibly deploying them. To achieve this, we have adopted a new, system-level approach to the responsible development and deployment of Llama. We envision Llama models as part of a broader system that puts the developer in the driver’s seat. Llama models will serve as a foundational piece of a system that developers design with their unique end goals in mind.

Instruction fine-tuning also plays a major role in ensuring the safety of our models. Our instruction-fine-tuned models have been red-teamed (tested) for safety through internal and external efforts. ​​Our red teaming approach leverages human experts and automation methods to generate adversarial prompts that try to elicit problematic responses. For instance, we apply comprehensive testing to assess risks of misuse related to Chemical, Biological, Cyber Security, and other risk areas. All of these efforts are iterative and used to inform safety fine-tuning of the models being released. You can read more about our efforts in the model card .

Llama Guard models are meant to be a foundation for prompt and response safety and can easily be fine-tuned to create a new taxonomy depending on application needs. As a starting point, the new Llama Guard 2 uses the recently announced MLCommons taxonomy, in an effort to support the emergence of industry standards in this important area. Additionally, CyberSecEval 2 expands on its predecessor by adding measures of an LLM’s propensity to allow for abuse of its code interpreter, offensive cybersecurity capabilities, and susceptibility to prompt injection attacks (learn more in our technical paper ). Finally, we’re introducing Code Shield which adds support for inference-time filtering of insecure code produced by LLMs. This offers mitigation of risks around insecure code suggestions, code interpreter abuse prevention, and secure command execution.

With the speed at which the generative AI space is moving, we believe an open approach is an important way to bring the ecosystem together and mitigate these potential harms. As part of that, we’re updating our Responsible Use Guide (RUG) that provides a comprehensive guide to responsible development with LLMs. As we outlined in the RUG, we recommend that all inputs and outputs be checked and filtered in accordance with content guidelines appropriate to the application. Additionally, many cloud service providers offer content moderation APIs and other tools for responsible deployment, and we encourage developers to also consider using these options.

Deploying Llama 3 at scale

Llama 3 will soon be available on all major platforms including cloud providers, model API providers, and much more. Llama 3 will be everywhere .

Our benchmarks show the tokenizer offers improved token efficiency, yielding up to 15% fewer tokens compared to Llama 2. Also, Group Query Attention (GQA) now has been added to Llama 3 8B as well. As a result, we observed that despite the model having 1B more parameters compared to Llama 2 7B, the improved tokenizer efficiency and GQA contribute to maintaining the inference efficiency on par with Llama 2 7B.

What’s next for Llama 3?

The Llama 3 8B and 70B models mark the beginning of what we plan to release for Llama 3. And there’s a lot more to come.

Our largest models are over 400B parameters and, while these models are still training, our team is excited about how they’re trending. Over the coming months, we’ll release multiple models with new capabilities including multimodality, the ability to converse in multiple languages, a much longer context window, and stronger overall capabilities. We will also publish a detailed research paper once we are done training Llama 3.

To give you a sneak preview for where these models are today as they continue training, we thought we could share some snapshots of how our largest LLM model is trending. Please note that this data is based on an early checkpoint of Llama 3 that is still training and these capabilities are not supported as part of the models released today.

Software may be eating the world , but it is also heating it.

In December 2023, representatives from nearly 200 countries gathered in Dubai for COP28, the U.N.’s climate-change conference, to discuss the urgent need to lower emissions. Meanwhile, COP28’s website produced 3.69 grams of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) per page load, according to the website sustainability scoring tool Ecograder . That appears to be a tiny amount, but if the site gets 10,000 views each month for a year, its emissions would be a little over that of a one-way flight from San Francisco to Toronto.

This was not inevitable. Based on Ecograder’s analysis, unused code, improperly sized images, and third-party scripts, among other things, affect the COP28 website’s emissions. These all factor into the energy used for data transfer, loading, and processing, consuming a lot of power on users’ devices. Fixing and optimizing these things could chop a whopping 93 percent from the website’s per-page-load emissions, Ecograder notes.

While software on its own doesn’t release any emissions, it runs on hardware in data centers and steers data through transmission networks, which account for about 1 percent of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions each. The information and communications technology sector as a whole is responsible for an estimated 2 to 4 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. By 2040, that number could reach 14 percent —almost as much carbon as that emitted by air, land, and sea transport combined.

Within the sphere of software, artificial intelligence has its own sustainability issues. AI company Hugging Face estimated the carbon footprint of its BLOOM large language model across its entire life cycle, from equipment manufacturing to deployment. The company found that BLOOM’s final training emitted 50 tonnes of CO 2 —equivalent to about a dozen flights from New York City to Sydney.

Green software engineering is an emerging discipline consisting of best practices to build applications that reduce carbon emissions. The green software movement is fast gaining momentum. Companies like Salesforce have launched their own software sustainability initiatives , while the Green Software Foundation now comprises 64 member organizations, including tech giants Google , Intel , and Microsoft . But the sector will have to embrace these practices even more broadly if they are to prevent worsening emissions from developing and using software.

What Is Green Software Engineering?

The path to green software began more than 10 years ago. The Sustainable Web Design Community Group of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) was established in 2013, while the Green Web Foundation began in 2006 as a way to understand the kinds of energy that power the Internet. Now, the Green Web Foundation is working toward the ambitious goal of a fossil-free Internet by 2030.

Green Software Resources

  • The Green Software Foundation offers a catalog of green software patterns for AI, the cloud, and the Web.
  • The W3C’s Sustainable Web Design Community Group released a draft of its Web sustainability guidelines , with both tactical and technical recommendations for business and product strategy, user-experience design, Web development, and hosting and infrastructure. The draft guidelines also include impact and effort ratings to give software engineers an idea of the level of difficulty in terms of implementation and the level of impact in terms of sustainability.

“There’s an already existing large segment of the software-development ecosystem that cares about this space—they just haven’t known what to do,” says Asim Hussain , chairperson and executive director of the Green Software Foundation and former director of green software and ecosystems at Intel .

What to do, according to Hussain, falls under three main pillars : energy efficiency, or using less energy; hardware efficiency, or using fewer physical resources; and carbon-aware computing, or using energy more intelligently. Carbon-aware computing, Hussain adds, is about doing more with your applications during the periods when the electricity comes from clean or low-carbon sources—such as when wind and solar power are available—and doing less when it doesn’t.

The Case for Sustainable Software

So why should programmers care about making their software sustainable? For one, green software is efficient software, allowing coders to cultivate faster, higher-quality systems, says Kaspar Kinsiveer , a team lead and sustainable-software strategist at the software-development firm Helmes .

These efficient systems could also mean lower costs for companies. “One of the main misconceptions about green software is that you have to do something extra, and it will cost extra,” Kinsiveer says. “It doesn’t cost extra—you just have to do things right.”

Green software is efficient software, allowing coders to cultivate faster, higher-quality systems.

Other motivating factors, especially on the business side of software, are the upcoming legislation and regulations related to sustainability. In the European Union, for instance, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive requires companies to report more on their environmental footprint, energy usage, and emissions, including the emissions related to the use of their products .

Yet other developers may be motivated by the climate crisis itself, wanting to play their part in fostering a habitable planet for the coming generations. And software engineers have tremendous influence on the actual purpose and emissions of what they build.

“It’s not just lines of code. Those lines have an impact on human beings,” says June Sallou , a postdoctoral researcher specializing in sustainable-software engineering at the Delft University of Technology , in the Netherlands. Because of AI’s societal impact in particular, she adds, developers have a responsibility to ensure that what they’re creating isn’t damaging the environment.

Building Greener Websites and Apps

The makers of COP28’s website could have taken a page from directories like Lowwwcarbon , which highlights examples of existing low-carbon websites. The company website of the Netherlands-based Web design and branding firm Tijgerbrood , for instance, emits less than 0.1 grams of carbon per page view.

Creating sustainable websites like Tijgerbrood’s is a team effort that involves different roles—from business analysts who define software requirements to designers, architects, and those in charge of operations—and includes green practices that can be applied at each stage of the software-development process.

Tips for Greener Websites and Apps

First, analysts will have to consider if the feature, app, or software they’re designing should even be developed in the first place. Tech is often about creating the next new thing, but making software sustainable also entails decisions on what not to build, and that may require a shift in mind-set.

The design stage is all about choosing efficient algorithms and architectures. “Think about sustainability before going into the solution—and not after,” says Chiara Lanza , a researcher at the Sustainable AI unit of the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya , in Barcelona.

During the development stage, programmers need to focus on optimizing code. “We need the overall amount of energy we’re using to run software to go down. Some of that will come from writing [code] efficiently,” says Hannah Smith , a sustainable digital tech consultant and director of operations at the Green Web Foundation.

Tijgerbrood ’s website optimized the company’s code by using low-resolution images and modern image formats, loading animations only when a user scrolls them into view, and removing unnecessary code. These techniques help speed up data transfer, loading, and processing on a user’s device. The website also uses minimal JavaScript. “When a user loads a website [with] a lot of JavaScript, it causes them to use a lot more energy on their own device because their device is having to do all the work of reading the JavaScript and running [it],” explains Smith.

When it comes to operations, one of the most impactful actions you can take is to select a sustainable Web hosting or cloud-computing provider. The Green Web Foundation has a tool to check if your website runs on green energy , as well as a directory of hosting providers powered by renewable energy . You can also ask your hosting provider if you can scale how your software runs in the cloud so that peak usage is powered by green energy or pause or switch off certain services during nonpeak hours.

AI the Green Way

Programmers can apply green software strategies when developing AI as well. Trimming training data is one of the major ways to make AI systems greener. Starting with data collection and preprocessing, it’s worth thinking about how much data is really needed to do the job. It may pay to clean the dataset to remove unnecessary data, or select only a subset of the dataset for training.

“The larger your dataset is, the more time and computation it will take for the algorithm to go through all the data,” hence using up more energy, says Sallou .

For instance, in a study of six different AI algorithms that detect SMS spam messages, Sallou and her colleagues found that the random forest algorithm , which combines the output of a collection of decision trees to make a prediction, was the most energy-greedy algorithm. But reducing the size of the training dataset to 20 percent—only 1,000 data points out of 5,000—dropped the energy consumption of training by nearly 75 percent, with only a 0.06 percent loss in accuracy.

Choosing a greener algorithm could also save carbon. Tools like CodeCarbon and ML CO 2 Impact can help make the choice by estimating the energy usage and carbon footprint of training different AI models.

Tips for Greener AI

To write green code, developers need a way of measuring the actual carbon emissions across a system’s entire life cycle. It’s a complex feat, given the myriad processes involved. If we take AI as an example, its life cycle encompasses raw material extraction, materials manufacturing, hardware manufacturing, model training, model deployment, and disposal—and not all of these stages have available data.

“We don’t understand huge parts of the ecosystem at the moment, and access to reliable data is tough,” Smith says. The biggest need, she adds, is “open data that we can rely on and trust” from big tech data-center operators and cloud providers like Amazon , Google, and Microsoft .

Until that data surfaces, a more practical approach would be to measure how much power software consumes. “Just knowing the energy consumption of running a piece of software can impact how software engineers can improve the code,” Sallou says.

Developers themselves are heeding the call for more measurement, and they’re building tools to meet this demand. The W3C’s Sustainable Web Design Community Group, for instance, plans to provide a test suite to measure the impacts of implementing its Web sustainability guidelines. Similarly, the Green Software Foundation wrote a specification to calculate the carbon intensity of software systems. For accurate measurements, Lanza suggests isolating the hardware in which a system runs from any other operations and to avoid running any other programs that could influence measurements.

Other tools developers can use to measure the impact of green software engineering practices include dashboards that give an overview of the estimated carbon emissions associated with cloud workloads, such as the AWS Customer Carbon Footprint Tool and Microsoft’s Azure Emissions Impact Dashboard ; energy profilers or power monitors like Intel’s Performance Counter Monitor ; and tools that help calculate the carbon footprint of websites, such as Ecograder , Firefox Profiler , and Website Carbon Calculator .

The Future Is Green

Green software engineering is growing and evolving, but we need more awareness to help the discipline to become more widespread. This is why, in addition to its Green Software for Practitioners course , the Green Software Foundation aims to create more training courses, some of which may even lead to certifications. Likewise, Sallou coteaches a graduate course in sustainable software engineering , whose syllabus is open and can be used as a foundation for anyone looking to build a similar course. Providing this knowledge to students early on, she says, could ensure they bring it to their workplaces as future software engineers.

In the realm of artificial intelligence, Navveen Balani , an AI expert and Google Cloud Certified Fellow who also serves on the Green Software Foundation’s steering committee, notes that AI could inherently include green AI principles in the coming years, much like how security considerations are now an integral part of software development. “This shift will align AI innovation with environmental sustainability, making green AI not just a specialty but an implied standard in the field,” he says.

As for the Web, Smith hopes the Green Web Foundation will cease to exist by 2030. “Our dream as an organization is that we’re not needed, we meet our goal, and the Internet is green by default,” she says.

Kinsiveer has observed that in the past, software had to be optimized and built well because hardware then was lacking. As hardware performance and innovation leveled up, “the quality of programming itself went down,” he says. But now, the industry is coming full circle, going back to its efficiency roots and adding sustainability to the mix.

“The future is green software,” Kinsiveer says. “I cannot imagine it any other way.”
