Is a DBA and PhD Equivalent?

A  Doctor of Business Administration  (DBA) is equivalent to a  Doctor of Philosophy (PhD); however, there are fundamental differences between these two doctoral degrees. These differences are nearly always at the centre of DBA vs PhD discussions, and they stem from the intended career path of the student following their degree.

A PhD focuses on the ‘ theory ’ underpinning business management, whereas a DBA focuses on the ‘ practical ’ concepts. Those who complete a PhD in business management usually do so as they wish to pursue a career in research or academia. Those who complete a DBA do so as they want to pursue a more advanced role in the business industry or within their organisation.

What Is a PhD?

A PhD is a doctorate degree and is the highest postgraduate qualification awarded by universities. It involves undertaking original research in a narrow subject field and typically takes 4 years to complete.

A PhD in Business Administration provides an individual with a specialised and research-based background for a topic in the business management field. This is one of the key reasons it’s sought after by those who wish to work in business-related academia or research.

What Is a DBA?

A  Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a business-orientated professional doctorate. Like a PhD, it is the highest-level postgraduate qualification which you can obtain from a university.

The degree programme focuses on providing practical and innovative business management knowledge which can apply to any workplace. DBAs are designed for experienced practitioners such as senior managers, consultants and entrepreneurs who want to further their practical abilities.

This form of doctorate was first introduced as a way of allowing a distinction to be made between experienced practitioners and expert practitioners. The doctorate is an equal alternative to a traditional PhD and is an advanced follow-up for a  Master’s in Business Administration  ( MBA ).

Research Scope

A noticeable difference between a PhD and a DBA is the research topic. A PhD candidate selects a research project of theoretical value to the academic environment. A DBA candidate selects a research project which has a practical application to the business environment.

This means that while the research topic for a PhD will centre around a gap in knowledge of existing theories, the topic for a DBA will usually focus on developing a new theory or innovatively improving an existing one.

DBA students typically choose research topics based on real-life scenarios they are facing or have faced. This is contrary to a PhD student where their research topic usually centres around a topic they don’t have first-hand experience in.

Programme Structure

A PhD usually takes 4 years to complete while a DBA degree takes between 4 – 7 years to complete, with most students requiring 6 years.

Due to DBA students being working professionals, nearly all DBA degree programmes are part-time courses carried out under a ‘distant learning’ arrangement. This is opposite to PhD programmes where most are offered as full-time projects which require extensive amounts of physical presence on the university’s campus.

Another difference in the programme between PhDs and DBAs is that PhDs have no taught components, while DBAs have a significant number of taught components .

Due to these taught components, DBA programmes are split into two sections . The first section is 2 years long and covers the taught elements of the degree and involves completing coursework. A wide range of specialist business management topics are covered, such as market theory , resource partitioning , and organisational development . These first two years provide you with advanced business knowledge and develop your research and analytical skills to prepare for your individual research project. The remaining 2 to 5 years is for you to undertake your individual research project; this is the second section.

As part of your research project, you will have to produce a thesis . The thesis will outline your methods and results and include a discussion of your research findings. Although the word count will vary for each university, most use an upper word count of around 60,000 words. Besides this, you will also need to defend your work during an oral examination known as a ‘ viva voce ’.

During your degree, you’ll likely have several opportunities to present your research at conferences, universities and related organisations.

Tuition Fees

To fairly represent the two sections of DBA programmes, universities usually adopt two sets of annual tuition fees. These fees vary widely between universities:

• The first set covers the first two years of the programme and is typically between £13,000 – £30,000 per year.
• The second set of annual tuition fee covers the remaining years and generally is between £4,000 – £9,000 per year.

The reason for this difference in fee is that the first two years will heavily utilise the university’s resources and a professor’s time to deliver the taught modules.

In contrast, the average cost of a full-time PhD is fixed throughout its full duration and is typically around £4,700 per annum. Given this difference in tuition fee and programme duration, a DBA is approximately two to three times more expensive than undertaking a PhD.

Besides having a greater reliance on a university’s resources, another reason DBA programmes cost more than a PhD is because of the differences in the students undertaking them. A PhD student is usually a young individual who has just completed a Master’s degree and has little to no working experience. On the opposite side of the spectrum, a DBA student will be an older individual with up to 10 years of professional working experience, and will likely still be working alongside their studies. As a result, universities can set a higher tuition fee due to DBA students being financially stronger.

Funding Opportunities

Compared to PhD programmes, DBAs don’t have as much access to funding opportunities.

DBA students can apply for Doctoral Loans or try to secure funding from external sources. The most accessible source of these external sources will always be their employer. While their employer may not cover the full tuition fees, they may subsidise part of it and help supply you with data and other resources you may need.

Entry Requirements

As DBAs are intended for experienced practitioners, you will be expected to have significant experience in your field. Although the entry requirements will differ between universities, most business schools will require you to have at least ten years of professional work experience with at least five years in a senior management or leadership position.

Most universities will also require you to have a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) or an equivalent Master’s degree in a business management subject. Depending on the strength of your bachelor’s degree and the significance of your professional working experience, you could still be enrolled into a DBA programme without a relevant Master’s degree; however, you will need to demonstrate why you are a strong DBA candidate.

As part of your application, most universities will also require you to prepare and submit a short research proposal. A research proposal outlines the ‘what, why and how’ of your intended research project.

Similar to PhD programs, you will need to meet English language requirements should English not be your first language. These requirements are usually:

• a minimum overall IELTS score of 7.0, with no less than 6.5 in each component,
• a minimum overall Pearson Test of English (PTE) of 70, with no less than 62 in each component.

PhD vs DBA Salaries

Typically, DBA graduates earn more than business management PhD graduates. This is because a DBA focuses on the practical applications of business management, and as such, what students learn can be applied in professional practice in their industry.

Due to this practical aspect, a DBA graduate becomes well suited for top leadership positions such as Operation Managers , Managing Directors and CEOs .

On the other hand, a PhD provides graduates with applied research skills and the ability to theorise, understand and develop business management concepts. This makes them better suited for a research or academic career. These positions attract less pay compared to leadership roles in large organisations.

1. What are the key components of a DBA program? How do you think it is different from Ph.D. in Business Administration? 

The key components of the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program are coursework, coursework evaluation, research work, evaluation, publications, and awarding the degree.  

The DBA program is different from Ph.D. The DBA program is designed for working middle and senior corporate executives of the average age group around 40 years. The DBA develops skills to make data-driven scientific evidence-based decisions. The decisions may be related to strategy formulation, implementation, operations, etc. 

In contrast, the PhD in Business Administration is designed for young academic-oriented scholars of age group around 25 years. The PhD develops research skills that help to develop theories or models that enrich the existing literature.   

  2. How can students benefit from a DBA degree? How it can help them strengthen their career in Management? 

The DBA program is industry-relevant research and can address specific issues / complicated situations/ dilemmas/challenges resulting in generating career advancement opportunities for scholars as they get ready to take strategic decisions based on research output. Upon successful completion of the program, the Scholar produces a high-quality dissertation thesis, publications, patents, etc. bringing insight in a specific area with a specific proposal of the solution which results into DBA Graduate’s career advancement in the following areas:

The DBA is designed for working middle and senior executives whose average age group is around 40 years who can’t sacrifice their jobs but can sacrifice their weekend times so, there is no requirement of scholarship, hence, universities or schools are not providing scholarships for DBA Students. 

Scholarships are generally available for Ph.D. students whose average age is around 25 years, and they are full-time researchers and expected to work for their professors’ projects and provide academic support to universities/schools.

What is the difference between a doctorate (PhD) and a DBA?

You might already have several years of work experience and a postgraduate degree. Perhaps even an MBA.

How do you then stand out from the crowd in a rapidly changing world and prove to employers that you are the right one to hire?

You can show your extensive work history or your track record. You could ask your network for recommendations. You could gain skills and certifications or a degree that’s even more prestigious than an MBA.

If you choose the latter, you could go down the route of a PhD, spend some years doing research and come up with your own unique theory and framework.

Or, you could do a DBA.

What is the difference between a PhD and a DBA?

A Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD), is a type of a doctorate degree, and perhaps the most common doctorate awarded.

It can be awarded in almost any subject and is achieved after three to four years of full-time research or five to seven years of part time research culminating in the presentation of a new theory or idea in the field. 

A Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), on the other hand, is a specialised doctorate in Business. It requires the student to undertake research to present solutions to problems, often ones that they’ve experienced within their own businesses or places of employment.

While a PhD is most suited to academics, a DBA keeps working professionals in mind, even though there can be some crossover between both.

Both of the degrees award a Doctorate upon completion and are equal in rank, title and prestige. 

Should I do a DBA or a PhD?

A PhD can be in any field. It is purely research based, and extensive time will be spent developing a new idea or framework where there is a gap in existing knowledge. It is especially suited towards academics or aspiring academics.

A DBA on the other hand is tailored towards business professionals with some work experience who want to move up within an organisation and break into management positions.

DBA In Data Science – India’s Only Applied Research Program For Technology And Business Leaders

Last year, the International School of Engineering (INSOFE), India, and the Rennes School of Business, France, launched the world’s first Doctorate of Business Administration ( DBA ) in Data Science. 

Analytics India Magazine caught up with Dr Dakshinamurthy V Kolluru, Founder, President & Chief Mentor at INSOFE, to understand the program, its target audience, objective, and scope.

AIM: Who typically benefits the most from a DBA degree?

Dr Murthy : DBA is a doctoral degree generally designed by business schools to benefit working professionals at senior manager or higher designations. They are typically individuals with decades of experience who want to become thought leaders, solve challenging problems, and push their industry ahead in technology or any other niche area of interest.

The idea is, in any industry you need 90 percent of people to sustain the operation and the remaining 10 percent to push the industry forward. To achieve that, they have to become thought leaders; they should be able to look and predict trends and see how they can apply that in their operations so that their business stays, innovates, and differentiates itself.

This need for thought leaders led to the conception of the DBA program. B-schools realise that the potential candidates for this program are already industry veterans. So the DBA program is designed in such a way that it combines students’ working knowledge with a thesis to help them gain the skills required to lead teams and innovate. 

AIM: What is the difference between a DBA in Data Science and a PhD in Data Science?

Dr Murthy : Both PhD and DBA are doctoral degrees. They are the highest degree a university can confer on any student. However, a PhD is primarily designed for freshers (holding a bachelors or a masters degree) who want to get into academia and/or do research, and is offered as a full-time program. 

A DBA on the other hand, is designed specifically for working professionals who want to work in an enterprise and help their industry innovate. It is for people who want to become thought leaders within the enterprise they are working for. 

Talking about data science in particular, which is a hands-on field, it is important that the candidates be trained not just in thought leadership but also in hands-on activities since their work requires them to lead teams that are super technical and understand the tech development better than an average manager. A DBA in data science is a combination of technical skills and business management with a lot more hands-on components than a traditional DBA program.

AIM: Can you give examples of a few DBA thesis that are currently happening at INSOFE? 

Dr Murthy : We started this program just one year back and in a short span of time, we became one of the largest research centres in data science with more than 40 doctoral students actively engaged in R&D! Our students come with varying work experience and academic interests which is reflected in their thesis. I would like to demonstrate this variation through two examples. 

The first thesis is done by a senior leader who has to deploy data science applications for several clients. Her job is to ensure that the data science application is deployed in such a way that the company derives the highest ROI. This not only requires technical expertise but also requires the intelligence and skills to deal with the team and address challenges such as dealing with the fear generated due to automation and conflict with ethics and legalities. The final objective is to design a planning tool that enables a business manager to predict the risks they encounter when they deploy an application. She will additionally design the mitigation strategies as well so that the chances of the application going live and giving desired ROI is highest upon execution. Her thesis is rooted 50 percent in business analysis and the rest in tool development. 

Many people in India speak broken/poor English and many documents also contain information written in the same format. One of our students is building a novel NLP product/architecture to understand such text that has lost all the sequential information. When fully developed, such technologies will help the less educated masses access the benefits of AI much better. This thesis involves 75 percent tech component and 25 percent business component. This is a one of a kind thesis with great potential and we are even thinking of patenting and productionising it. 

Though the DBA students are not required to do the actual coding they have to plan and carry out the entire development activity of their thesis. The student will work with data scientists at INSOFE who will help them with the computer programming aspects of their thesis. 

AIM: Do students have publication opportunities for the research projects they develop?

Dr Murthy : Every student gets at least two publication opportunities for the thesis they develop. Although the DBA is a part-time program, it is as rigorous as a regular PhD program. Every week one of our faculty interacts with the student to read, understand, and help them develop their thesis. These regular in-depth discussions ensure the thesis developed is of the highest quality and reliable for industry application later on. 

Every student in the program conducts an industrial survey, understands the current situation in that industry, and builds a prototype that helps resolve issues in the industry. Many times these tools are patentable with an opportunity to productise, should the student wish to do so.

AIM: Could you expand on the demography of DBA candidates at INSOFE with regard to their educational background, industry experience, and age?

Dr Murthy : We are truly a global program , hosting students from 11 countries; a huge feat for a year old program! All of our students have over 8 years of experience and around 87 percent have more than 10 years of experience working in posts such as managerial director, CXO, and VP. With regard to educational background, 70 percent of the students have a master’s degree and 30 percent have a bachelor’s degree.

Though we have a rich cohort of students, we are focused on making the   gender distribution more equitable in the future. At this point, 77 percent of our students are men and 23 percent are women. However, we foster an inclusive culture that encourages students with diverse identities, expressions, abilities, perspectives, and backgrounds at INSOFE. 

AIM: Why did two institutes Rennes SB and INSOFE come together to do a DBA?

Dr Murthy : This is a techno-managerial program, it is not enough if we create strategy makers. Rennes School of Business is one of the top B-schools of the world with several of its programs ranked among the top 100 business programs of the world. It also holds the rare distinction of having triple-crown accreditation (accreditation from top global bodies–AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS). They bring tremendous business depth to the program. On the other hand, INSOFE is one of the top data science institutions. We have prestigious accreditations and around 500 companies recruit our students every year! 

We combined our technical strength with Rennes’ business expertise synergistically to create a world-class techno-managerial doctoral program. That’s what makes this program really unique.

AIM: What is the ROI for this DBA program?

Dr Murthy : One of the commonly asked questions is whether it is worth doing a doctoral degree in data science. AI and ML are considered one of the highest in-demand disciplines in the world. A doctoral degree can help a candidate rank among the top 1% in this field.

The idea is that every enterprise–small, medium and large is desperate to implement AI and ML; it is probably easier to hire a few data scientists in the team to do so. But a huge gap lies in understanding where AI can be implemented in their enterprise, how to work with their technical team to get those products done in real-time, and ensure the delivery of the right returns. That essential leadership skill with an understanding of data science is missing. Hence there is a tremendous demand for managers and leaders who can own those innovations and this DBA is a near perfect way to acquire all those skills at the same time.

AIM: Can you tell us how the faculty profiles and experience at Rennes SB and INSOFE play a role in guiding students’ research? 

Dr Murthy : There are 160 faculties between Rennes and INSOFE. INSOFE has 70 faculty members who are experts in data science, have built products, worked in consulting positions, and constantly engaged in different research projects. Between INSOFE faculty, we have 75 patents and 300+ research publications and more than 1,000 tech presentations. Further, the select 90 faculty members from Rennes are experts in research, consulting, and advisory services from a business perspective. 

This faculty industry experience combined with the classroom teaching and mentoring help our students develop a more in depth understanding of real world problems in the industry they work in and select appropriate practical research projects to address these problems.

AIM: How much time do students get to spend with mentors during this DBA program and how is it beneficial to their experience?

Dr Murthy : The beauty of the program is close personal interaction with mentors. Every faculty and DBA student meet at least once a week and have a thorough discussion on the student’s area of interest. In addition, we have allocated data scientist experts to assist every student for 6-8 hours a week in developing their thesis. All DBA students at INSOFE, hence get more than 1,000 hours of interaction with expert data scientists guiding them on their DBA during their three years of doctoral study. This ensures that our students receive constant support and encouragement from experts in the field and further validates the research they do.

DBA vs. PhD in Business

Among doctoral degrees in business , prospective students can take two different paths: a PhD in business, or a Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA). To shed some light on just how common each degree is among AACSB-accredited  institutions, out of 251 accredited respondents to our 2014–15 Business School Questionnaire that reported doctoral business programs, 214 schools reported offering only PhDs, while 15 offer only DBAs, and 22 offer at least one of each. That further works out to a total of 883 distinct PhD programs and 54 DBA programs among the participating accredited schools. Clearly the PhD is the dominant doctoral degree type in this case, at about 94 percent.

What’s the Difference?

To gain a bit more perspective on what distinguishes these two degrees, I spoke with Praveen Parboteeah, who holds a PhD and is director of the DBA program at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s College of Business and Economics . He says, “The market still sees PhDs as superior, as the level of in-depth specialization is necessary for more research-oriented institutions. However, DBAs are satisfying a critical niche whereby strong practitioners are trained in the rigors of scientific method and bring both practice and scholarly research to the university.” He believes that “DBAs will get more popular as programs gain more credibility.”

So if you’re among the ambitious souls seeking to go to the next level but aren’t sure which type of program to pursue, Parboteeah helps to provide an overarching distinction between the degrees by noting that DBAs “tend to typically be more practice oriented,” while PhDs are often more research oriented. Another notable difference, he says, is in the doctoral admissions process, where applicants to a DBA program “are expected to have a minimum number of years of high-level work experience.” At Wisconsin-Whitewater, applicants are required to have at least six years of professional experience, but Parboteeah has found that the average number of years of experience among applicants is actually much higher, at 19 years.

This further means that applicants to the DBA have typically been out of school for a while, although some may have earned master’s degrees later in life after some career experience and then transitioned directly into the doctoral program. Those who earn PhDs in business tend to have more of a straight degree path, from bachelor’s to master’s to doctoral (or just bachelor’s to doctoral if a master’s isn’t required), without the professional experience, as their goal is often to teach and produce academic research.

As for the curriculum in each program, Parboteeah says, “Based on my experience with our program and the one at Kennesaw State University,” where he is on faculty as a senior global scholar, “I would say that DBAs are much more varied in nature compared to PhDs. Most PhDs offer a standardized curriculum where students are expected to become a specialist in one of the functional areas such as management, marketing, etc. However, DBAs can have a practical curriculum with the executive in mind.”

Doctoral Research: For What Purpose?

While both degree programs generally require a dissertation at the end of the degree, the research completed for each program can differ in nature. Parboteeah provides a couple examples of student research in his DBA program: “For instance, we have an individual whose expertise is on detection and prevention of money laundering. He is finding that there is a lot that has been done in economics that could be extremely useful for his work. We have another individual who is in healthcare administration and who is validating the patient satisfaction measure widely used in hospitals. These two examples show what DBA students bring to the table.” PhD research, on the other hand, is often more theoretical or conceptual in nature. The ideas that result from this work are studied by other professors and doctoral students.

End Goal: The Teaching Connection

What happens after doctoral students graduate from each degree? Because the PhD specifically prepares students for a career in academia, graduates of those programs often seek tenure-track faculty positions at colleges and universities, but other options include researchers or business consultants. DBA graduates have similar aspirations. According to Parboteeah, many of the practitioner-graduates from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater program “want to have some connection with universities.” That may mean teaching one class per semester, while remaining in the workforce. Parboteeah says that “practitioners see it as a way to give back to their communities.” However, he notes of DBAs, “we also have others who have extensive work experience but want to transition to academia.” He even says that the majority of students in his program want to make that transition.
