Accessing CareerHub

Most of our services require a CareerHub login. Find out how to access CareerHub below:

Current PhD students

You will automatically have access to CareerHub  after you register on campus  at the start of your degree. It usually takes a maximum of two days after registration until you have access. You will have access as a current student until your degree programme ends. This is usually the end of June for undergraduates and nine month master's students, and the end of September for postgraduates. After this time you will switch to having 'graduate' access.

You are eligible to use CareerHub if you are currently studying a degree programme awarded by LSE. Language Centre and Summer School students are not able to access CareerHub.

  • Go to  careers.lse.ac.uk/login .
  • Enter your CareerHub account details under the heading 'Login with your CareerHub account'. You will need to reset your password the first time you try to log in with your CareerHub account.
  • Or select 'Login with LSE IT account' and enter your LSE IT account details. We recommend you use your CareerHub account as you will be able to use these login details after your LSE IT account has expired.

If you have problems

If you try logging in and see a message on CareerHub saying 'You cannot register', this usually means that your login details are correct but that you are not eligible to use CareerHub (or should be logging in using a different method). Please  contact us  with your name and student number if you think you should be able to access CareerHub.

If you are told that your LSE IT Account username or password is incorrect then please contact the LSE IMT Service Desk on  [email protected]  or 020 7107 5000.

PhD alumni (completed less than five years ago)

LSE alumni can access CareerHub for five years after you complete your degree programme at LSE. Please note that this is not the date you graduate; it is usually the end of June for undergraduates and nine month master's students and the end of September for 12 month master's students.

Access to careers appointments changes depending on how long ago you completed your course. See our  careers advice for alumni  page for more information.

  • Go to  careers.lse.ac.uk/login
  • enter your CareerHub account username and password below the heading 'Login with your CareerHub account'

If you didn't activate your CareerHub account as a student you will need to set your password the first time you try and log in. If you still have access to the email address registered with LSE then you can  reset your password  to set up your alumni CareerHub Account.

If you no longer have access to the email registered with LSE then complete a  new login request form  to gain access to CareerHub. We aim to respond to your request within one working day.

Please note:  if you completed your degree less than two years ago you can use your LSE Public Account details to log in if you prefer. Select 'Login with your LSE IT account' to use these details.

Please  contact us  if you have any issues with your CareerHub account. If possible include your student number, a screenshot of the problem and the browser you are using.

LSE research staff and fellows

You can gain staff access to CareerHub if you are a member of research staff at LSE and have not finished a degree programme at LSE in the last five years.

You will need to create a staff  CareerHub account  to gain access. Complete the form on the  new user registration page  and we’ll let you know when we’ve approved your registration. This will usually be on the same day.

Please note:  if you have studied at LSE in the past and your staff ID is the same as your old student number then you will need to  make up a unique staff ID  to register with. We recommend adding '-staff' to the end of your staff ID.

Once you have created a staff account go to  careers.lse.ac.uk/login  and enter your CareerHub account username and password below the heading 'Login with your CareerHub account'.

If you have a problem registering please  contact us  with your name, staff ID and a screenshot of the error message.

BSc Management

Introduction, preliminary readings.

On this BSc Management, you’ll explore how organisations work and looks at management practice in the context of economics, statistics, maths and accounting.

This programme has a strong quantitative focus and theoretical approach. But, at every stage, you’ll be applying this knowledge to real-world scenarios and developing your critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical abilities, and business acumen.

Right from the start, you’ll develop job-focused skills, such as learning how to work in a team, conduct quantitative analysis, write clearly and deliver effective presentations. We also help you develop your strategic awareness and broad perspectives on the discipline through our organisational strategy course and regular events.

During your studies, you can apply to spend a year studying abroad at one of our global partners in the US, Italy, Switzerland, France or Hong Kong, developing your skills in an international setting.

The degree opens the doors to a variety of rewarding careers in areas such as investment banking, management consulting, tech and accounting. Our graduates go on to work in many prestigious firms such as Deloitte, KPMG and Microsoft.

For further insight into the subject areas, we suggest looking at the following books:

  • A Dixit and B Nalebuff Thinking Strategically: competitive edge in business, politics and everyday life (Norton, 1993)
  • E Goldratt and J Cox The Goal: a process of ongoing improvement (Gower, 2004)
  • K Legge Human Resource Management: rhetorics and realities (Anniversary edition, Palgrave, 2005)
  • S Robbins and T Judge Organisational Behaviour (12th edition, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2006)
  • J Roberts The Modern Firm: organisational design for performance and growth (Oxford University Press, 2004)

We also consider applications from students with a range of other UK qualifications and from overseas. For GCSEs, you’ll need several GCSE grades at A (or 7) and A* (or 8-9).

As a minimum, we ask for GCSE English Language and Mathematics grades at B (6) or higher. We’ll also consider your overall GCSE subject profile.

  • There is no set subject combination, although traditional academic subjects (natural sciences, English, Economics, and the humanities) are preferred over subjects such as Business Studies or Accounting.
  • A-level (or equivalent) Mathematics is essential due to the analytical nature of this programme, , together with the aptitude and willingness to develop further mathematic knowledge.
  • We’re looking for students with an eclectic mix of contrasting subjects such as History, Chemistry and Mathematics or Geography, Biology and Physics.
  • Further Mathematics provides helpful preparation for this highly quantitative course, although it’s not essential. We’re happy to consider students with Mathematics, Further Mathematics and one other A-level (ideally an essay-based subject).

Fees and funding

The table of fees shows the latest tuition fees for all programmes.

You're charged a fee for each year of your programme. Your tuition fee covers registration and examination fees payable to the School, lectures, classes and individual supervision, lectures given at other colleges under intercollegiate arrangements and, under current arrangements, membership of the Students' Union. It doesn't cover living costs or travel or fieldwork.

Your tuition fees, and eligibility for any financial support, depend on whether you’re classified as a home or an overseas student – known as your fee status. We assess your fee status based on guidelines from the UK Government’s Department for Education.

Learn more about fee status classification .

Scholarships, bursaries and loans

We recognise that the cost of living in London may be higher than in your home town or country. LSE provides generous financial support, in the form of bursaries and scholarships, to UK, EU and overseas students.

Additionally, the UK Government provides loans to UK and some EU students. Some overseas governments also offer funding.

Further information on tuition fees, living costs, loans and scholarships .

Learning and assessment

How you learn, how you're assessed.

Format and contact hours: most courses involve lectures and classes or seminars where you’ll discuss lecture topics in more depth. Generally, you can expect 12 to 18 hours of teaching a week. You’ll prepare essays, reports, problem sets or presentations for classes. Get a broad idea of the study time involved in the Calendar within the Teaching section of each course guide .

Independent study: you’ll be expected to complete independent study outside your classes. You’ll need to manage much of this work independently, which may include reading, note-taking, research and other tasks.

LSE teaching: LSE is internationally recognised for teaching and research and our academics bring wide-ranging expertise. Courses may be taught by faculty members, guest teachers, visiting members of staff, LSE teaching fellows and graduate teaching assistants, who are usually doctoral research students.

Learn about the teacher responsible for each course in the relevant  course guide .

Academic support

Academic mentor: you’ll meet with your academic mentor regularly to discuss your work. Your mentor can provide advice and guidance on academic issues and, where appropriate, personal concerns.

Other academic support: at LSE, we offer lots of opportunities to extend your learning outside the classroom.

LSE LIFE is a great place to get advice and practise the skills you’ll need during your studies and beyond.

Through LSE LIFE, you can:

  • attend workshops on developing leadership skills, finding the right study/work/life balance and preparing for the world of work
  • develop your reading, academic writing and critical-thinking skills
  • gain experience of working in study groups and develop your cross-cultural communication and teamwork skills.

Disability and Mental Health Service: we want all LSE students to achieve their full potential. Students can access free, confidential advice through our Disability and Mental Health Service . This is the first point of contact for students.

Your timetable

  • The standard teaching day runs from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Undergraduate teaching is not normally scheduled for Wednesdays after 12 noon to allow for sports, volunteering and other extra-curricular activities.
  • The lecture and seminar timetable is published in mid-August and the full academic timetable (with information on classes) is published by mid-September via the LSE timetables web pages .
  • All personal undergraduate timetables are published in LSE for You (LFY) . For personal timetables to appear, you must be registered at LSE, be signed up for courses in LFY and ensured that there are no unauthorised clashes in your course selections. We try our best to minimise changes once personal timetables have been published. However, you’ll be notified about any changes by email.

Formative coursework

All taught courses include formative coursework, which is not assessed. This helps prepare you for summative assessment. We use a wide range of formative assessment methods, such as essays, case studies, reports, quizzes and mock exams.

Feedback on coursework is an essential part of the learning experience. Class teachers mark formative coursework and feedback is normally given within two weeks – provided the work is submitted on time.

Summative assessment

This counts towards your final course mark and degree award.

Summative assessment for courses can include essays, assignments, group projects, exams (in May or June), or a combination of these methods.

Your final grade will be based on your performance across all three years, with an emphasis on performance in the second and third years.

You’ll receive feedback on summative coursework as part of the assessment for individual courses (except on final submitted dissertations). Feedback is normally provided before the examination period.

Assessment on individual courses can change from year to year. Read about the current formative coursework and summative assessment for each course in the relevant  course guide .

October 3rd, 2016, phd careers in management consultancy.

Estimated reading time: 10 minutes

Careers in consultancy are sometimes of interest to our PhD students and graduates. Some firms particularly target applications from PhD students. McKinsey, BCG, Oliver Wyman, Charles River Associates; Compass Lexecon; Cornerstone Research and others have specific interest in PhD qualified applicants. Some firms offer insight days and special events for PhD students.

We provide opportunities for you to find out more about working in specific sectors and meet recruiters. Book and keep up to date with events and vacancies on CareerHub .

Background reading

Careers information about management and specialist consultancy, events; lists of firms; explanations of jobs roles; news; and vacancies is available on our website .

Inspiring role models

There are many LSE PhD graduates working in management consultancy, two examples, one quant, one qual:

Zhong Zhong Chen (LSE PhD International History, 2014), Project Leader in Boston Consulting Groups’s Dubai Office

Zhong completed his PhD in International History at LSE with a thesis on Eastern European-Chinese relations during the Deng Xiaoping era. During his PhD, he published in academic journals and was granted visiting fellowships to the Freie Universitaet in Berlin and Peking University in Beijing. His current work focuses mostly on regional economic development as well as large-scale public sector transformations. In 2019 he was promoted from Strategy Consultant to Project Leader. In the past, he has served clients in the shipping, consumer goods as well as defence sectors. Before BCG, he worked as a Strategy Consultant at Monitor Deloitte, also based out of the Dubai office. During his time at LSE he gained internship experience at Independent Diplomat, the Canadian Embassy in Berlin, as well as Oliver Wyman.

Amy Challen, (LSE PhD Applied Econometrics 2013), Engagement Manager at McKinsey and Company in London moved to a Management role at Shell

Amy holds a Bachelors degree in PPE from Oxford, a Masters in Economics from Free University in the Netherlands, and a PhD in Applied Econometrics from LSE. She has also completed visiting graduate work at Princeton and Sciences Po Paris and worked for seven years as a full-time researcher at the Centre for Economic Performance at LSE. She had not considered careers in consulting, and first heard about McKinsey after receiving an email from LSE Careers in 2011 about McKinsey’s Insight programme, which takes PhD students for three days to learn about consulting. After gaining a place on this course, she was encouraged to apply for a full-time role and received an offer a few months later. She joined McKinsey as a Junior Associate in August 2013, and worked on a variety of projects and industries and functions, including banking, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, telecoms and consumer. She was seconded to QuantumBlack, an advanced analytics consultancy that is part of McKinsey, which gave her an opportunity to apply the econometrics she learnt in academia in a business context. After five years at Mckinsey, she moved to Shell as a Manger, connecting data science with business opportunities.

Unsure about your next steps and need to talk through your career ideas?

Confidential one-to-one careers consultation appointments are available every week – book with the PhD Careers Consultant Catherine Reynolds now. Good luck with your career thinking and remember we support you whatever direction you’re considering!

  • Graduate research
  • Department of Management
  • Application code N2Z1
  • Starting 2024
  • Home full-time: Closed
  • Overseas full-time: Closed
  • Location: Houghton Street, London

This programme offers you the chance to undertake a substantial piece of work that is worthy of publication and which makes an original contribution to the field of employment relations and human resource management. You will begin on the MRes and will need to meet certain requirements to be upgraded to PhD status.

The MRes/PhD in Management – Employment Relations and Human Resources (ERHR) is part of a rigorous and interdisciplinary graduate training programme. It is designed to stimulate critical thinking and creative ideas and provide you with the analytical skills to design, carry out, report, read and evaluate qualitative and quantitative research.

As a research-led department of management at the heart of LSE’s academic community in central London, we are ranked #5 in the world for social sciences and management

The ERHR group’s investigation and teaching pursue Human Resource Management (HRM) foundational domains (e.g. recruitment and selection, diversity and inclusion, well-being, voice, learning and development, engagement and retention, compensation, performance management), as well as strategic HRM, labour unions and other institutions, corporate social responsibility and value chains, new and emerging employment relationships (e.g. gig economy and zero-hour contracts), digital HRM and people analytics, emerging technology and the future of work.

We aim to produce top-quality social scientists with the ability to engage with the conceptual foundations of employment relations and human resource management – from both an international and comparative perspective – and employ robust methods to produce significant and original research.

You will work closely with international and world-class faculty as part of a vibrant community of doctoral students, all of whom are pursuing varied research in different fields of management. The programme also includes a comprehensive methodological training with the opportunity to specialise in a designated field.

Programme details

For more information about tuition fees and entry requirements, see the fees and funding and assessing your application sections.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements for mres/phd in management - employment relations and human resources.

Upper second class honours (2:1) degree in any discipline, or the equivalent.

Competition for places at the School is high. This means that even if you meet our minimum entry requirement, this does not guarantee you an offer of admission.

If you have studied or are studying outside of the UK then have a look at our  Information for International Students  to find out the entry requirements that apply to you.

GRE/GMAT requirement

The GRE/GMAT is required for all applicants. We do not require a specific GRE/GMAT overall score but the test gives us an indication of your aptitude for our programmes. There is no preference for GMAT or GRE but all applications must submit scores at the time of application. Your score should be less than five years old on 1 October 2024.

Please see LSE information on GRE and GMAT for more detail on our requirements and submission of test scores, including information on LSE’s institution codes.

Assessing your application

We welcome applications for research programmes that complement the academic interests of members of staff at the School. We recommend that you investigate staff research interests before applying.

We carefully consider each application on an individual basis, taking into account all the information presented on your application form, including your:

  • Academic achievement (including existing and pending qualifications).
  • Academic statement of purpose ( writing your statement of purpose guidance ).
  • Academic references ( see guidance on references ).
  • GMAT/GRE ( how your scores are reviewed ).
  • Outline research proposal ( writing your research proposal guidance ).
  • Sample of written work.

LSE Graduate Admissions information on supporting documents

You may also have to provide evidence of your English proficiency. You do not need to provide this at the time of your application to LSE, but we recommend that you do. See LSE's English language requirements.

When to apply

The application deadline for this programme is 15 January 2024 . See the fees and funding section for more details.

How to apply

To apply online go to the LSE Application System .

We do not require a specific overall score but the test gives us an indication of aptitude for our programmes. A strong GMAT or GRE score will count in your favour, but other information, such as your research interests, your examination results, previous qualifications and references are central to our overall evaluation of your application. We recognise that if your first language is not English, the verbal test will be more demanding and we view your score on that basis.

Applying to both Employment Relations and Human Resource Management (ERHR) and Organisational Behaviour (OB) programmes

Our application process allows candidates to apply to up to two programmes. You can therefore apply to both the Employment Relations and Human Resources (ERHR) and the Organisational Behaviour (OB) programme if you are unsure where your research interest will find the best match. This means Faculty from both groups will review your application, and you may be invited to interview for either one or both programmes.

Although ERHR and OB faculty members focuses on their respective research areas and interests, both faculty groups generally draw from similar disciplines (e.g., psychology, sociology, or economics), theoretical underpinning, and literatures that guide their multi-level (e.g., individual, groups, organisational, and/or institutional) quantitative and qualitative scholarship.

Applicants are encouraged to investigate  Faculty interests in both ERHR and OB  to discern potential faculty who may have the best fit.

If you would like advice on applying to both programmes or more detailed information on each programme you can talk with a member of our programme team by requesting a consultation .

Fees and funding

Every research student is charged a fee in line with the fee structure for their programme.  The fee covers registration and examination fees payable to the School, lectures, classes and individual supervision, lectures given at other colleges under intercollegiate arrangements and, under current arrangements, membership of the Students' Union. It does not cover  living costs  or travel or fieldwork.

Tuition fees 2024/25 for MRes/PhD in Management - Employment Relations and Human Resources

Home students: £4,829 for the first year (provisional) Overseas students: £22,632 for the first year

The fee is likely to rise over subsequent years of the programme. The School charges home research students in line with the level of fee that the Research Councils recommend. The fees for overseas students are likely to rise in line with the assumed percentage increase in pay costs (i.e. 4 per cent per annum).

The Table of Fees shows the latest tuition amounts for all programmes offered by the School.

The amount of tuition fees you will need to pay, and any financial support you are eligible for, will depend on whether you are classified as a home or overseas student, otherwise known as your fee status. LSE assesses your fee status based on guidelines provided by the Department of Education.

Further information about fee status classification

Scholarships, studentships and other funding

This programme is eligible for  LSE PhD Studentships , and  Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funding . Selection for the PhD Studentships and ESRC funding is based on receipt of an application for a place – including all ancillary documents before the funding deadline.

Programme structure and courses

Research practicums.

For the duration of your 2-year MRes programme, you will engage in active research, called Research Practicums, with different members of Faculty. The rotation of practicum assignments will include one-to-one training and collaboration that provides you better understanding of the research process, e.g.:

  • Literature reviews.
  • Applied research method and practices.
  • Determining theory-driven, testable hypotheses.
  • Identifying appropriate methods and samples.
  • Coding and data analysis.
  • Evaluating findings and implications.
  • Writing manuscripts for the academic peer-reviewed process with ultimate goal of publication in top-tier academic journal.

First year (MRes)

Study in the first year includes a doctoral seminar in Employment Relations and Human Resource management and training in quantitative and qualitative methods.

As the Employment Relations and Human Resources domain is multidisciplinary, you will also take an elective course from selected fields including but not limited to:

  • Management.
  • Organisational Behaviour.
  • Employment Relations.
  • Government.
  • Other subject areas in agreement with your Supervisor.

All first year doctoral students in the Department of Management will take the seminar course A Social Sciences Perspective of Academic Research in Management.

Courses include:

Employment Relations and Human Resource Management Seminar I

The seminar covers micro-HRM, macro-HRM, the future of work, labour markets, institutional, and comparative employment relations perspectives, and the full range of research methods from across the ERHR field.

Fundamentals of Social Science Research Design

This core course introduces a broad range of design options across quantitative and qualitative research, covering issues of data quality, analysis, reporting and reproducibility. The course is designed to equip you to implement and make arguments defending the methods you use in your PhD theses.

You may choose an alternative course depending on your previous research design training as more specialised options are available.

Quantitative Research Methods

You choose a course in quantitative methods or statistics depending on your previous quantitative methods training and research interests.

Qualitative Research Methods

This core course covers conceptual understandings of current academic debates regarding qualitative methods, and with practical skills to put those methods into practice. Where applicable you can replace this course with alternative advanced qualitative training.

Elective Course in the Social Sciences

You will have the opportunity to select an elective course aligned with your research interests in either Management, Organisational Behaviour, Employment Relations, Law, Gender, Government, or other subject areas in agreement with your supervisor.

A Social Sciences Perspective of Academic Research in Management

Along with all MRes/PhD and MPhil/PhD students from across the Department of Management Research programmes you will participate in a seminar on the nature of scientific enquiry in the Social Sciences. The seminar series is led by members of the Faculty across the Department and provides an interdisciplinary collaborative perspective and the opportunity for students to develop academic presentation skills

Second year (MRes)

In the second year, you will continue to participate in Research Practicums and the Employment Relations and Human Resources Seminar. You will take two elective courses in your area of interest or additional methods depending on your training and intellectual requirements and preferences. You will write a research paper in your field of interest which will form an important element in your upgrade to PhD.

Employment Relations and Human Resource Management Seminar II

Two Elective Courses in areas of research interest or additional methods training

Research Paper in Management (MRes PhD Programmes)

Third, fourth and fifth year (PhD)

Upon successfully completing the MRes and progressing to the PhD, you will work on your research and write your PhD thesis. Throughout the 3-5 year preiod there are regular reviews on your research progress. In the final year you prepare a detailed plan of work for the successful submission of your thesis.

Throughout your PhD you will show the continued development of research ideas for publication, participation in relevant training courses and career development activities.

For the most up-to-date list of courses please visit the relevant School Calendar page .

You must note, however, that while care has been taken to ensure that this information is up to date and correct, a change of circumstances since publication may cause the School to change, suspend or withdraw a course or programme of study, or change the fees that apply to it. The School will always notify the affected parties as early as practicably possible and propose any viable and relevant alternative options. Note that the School will neither be liable for information that after publication becomes inaccurate or irrelevant, nor for changing, suspending or withdrawing a course or programme of study due to events outside of its control, which includes but is not limited to a lack of demand for a course or programme of study, industrial action, fire, flood or other environmental or physical damage to premises.

You must also note that places are limited on some courses and/or subject to specific entry requirements. The School cannot therefore guarantee you a place. Please note that changes to programmes and courses can sometimes occur after you have accepted your offer of a place. These changes are normally made in light of developments in the discipline or path-breaking research, or on the basis of student feedback. Changes can take the form of altered course content, teaching formats or assessment modes. Any such changes are intended to enhance the student learning experience. You should visit the School’s  Calendar , or contact the relevant academic department, for information on the availability and/or content of courses and programmes of study. Certain substantive changes will be listed on the  updated graduate course and programme information  page.

Supervision, progression and assessment

Supervision.

You do not need to have identified a supervisor prior to application. During your MRes you will be supervised by the PhD Director of the Employment Relations and Human Resources programme.

During the first two years of the programme, you will participate in Research Practicums, working in collaboration with different faculty mentors. Each research practicum will enable you to participate in research activities, understand Faculty research interests, and develop your own research skills. Your PhD supervisors will be appointed when you upgrade to PhD.

Progression and assessment

You will need to meet certain criteria to progress to each subsequent year of the programme, such as achieving certain grades in your coursework and engaging in all aspects of the programme.

Your final award will be determined by the completion of an original research thesis and a viva oral examination.
