  • Check Shani's character profile in the menu.
  • Geralt should give her a gift, but it's a choice between a Rowan petal, brandy, or mead.
  • Any choice will lead to the same result, but the Rowan petals are the most heartfelt option.
  • A long interaction between the characters will play out, and the side quest will be complete.

Back To Oxenfurt

Travel back to the Oxenfurt Harbor and speak the Oligierd. Geralt will show him the letter, and this will complete the Dead Man's Party quest. The next task on Geralt's list for von Everec and Gaunter is the Open Sesame quest in The Witcher 3 .

Dead Man's Party Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Quest

Suggested level: 33

Group: Main Quests (Hearts of Stone)

Location: Novigrad

You will receive this quest when you complete the " Evil's Soft First Touches " quest. One of Olgierd's wishes will be that you please his deceased brother.

As Master Mirror forewarned, Olgierd von Everec asked Geralt to perform several tasks for him. One of these was to show his brother, Vlodimir, the time of his life. As I know from many pleasant personal experiences, the witcher, grim as he may sometimes seem, is more than capable of arranging a fantastic night out. Yet in this case, there was one particularly tricky catch: Vlodimir was dead. As a first step to overcoming this obstacle, Geralt decided to go see Shani, who, as a Redanian subject, an Oxenfurt resident and a woman of great learning, might just have some information about where Vlodimir is buried.

Go to Shani's Clinic in Oxenfurt and talk to your friend. Explain to her what you want to do and she will decide to help you.

Talk to Shani about the von Everec family crypt.

Shani had been a diligent student – she not only had heard of the von Everec family, but also happened to be in the possession of a tome indicating the location of their family crypt. She and Geralt decided to journey there together. Shani was to bring a censer with her, which Geralt intended to use to perform the ancient ritual of Blood Summoning to bring forth the ghost of Olgierd’s dead brother.

2. Meet Shani in front of the von Everec family crypt.

Her plan will be accepted. Then Shani will go to change for the wedding and you and Vlodimir will stay in the crypt. Vlodimir will ask you what the relationship between Shani and you is.

Defeat the wraiths of dead von Everecs.

If you told Vlodimir that you and Shani have something in common - " Cared for Shani deeply once." :

Thanks to the Blood Summoning (which, as is the norm during witcher adventures, did not go off without certain complications), Geralt was able to summon the ghost of Vlodimir von Everec. Vlodimir, delighted at the prospect of enjoying a “cracking good time,” stated that to do so, he would need a body… and then promptly possessed the witcher’s, despite the latter's heated resistance. From that moment till Vlodimir had had his fun, Vlod’s ghost accompanied Geralt everywhere the witcher went. And it so happened on that day, he was going to a wedding, where he was to meet Shani. Vlodimir was thrilled at this, for he had taken quite the liking to the young medic, but, learning that she meant something special to Geralt, he promised to keep his hands off her. Yet something about his manner left room to doubt he’d keep this promise…

...or, if you told Vlodimir that Shani and you are just friends - " Only ever been friends. ":

Walk up to the people standing by the lake and talk to them.

When the fire swallower comes down, you can give him back his hat if you found it. You can tell the him to go back to the wedding (" Let's go. You can sober up on the way. ") or ask him how you swallow the fire (" Fire eating - what's the trick? "). In the latter case, you will offend him and he will want to walk away. You can then use Delusion (1) or pay him an extra 50 crowns to stay.

On your way back to the village, you will be attacked by a boar (34), and you will have to kill it. When you return to the village you will be able to enjoy his show (104 XP).

10.3. Drive the pigs into the pen. 0/2 / Defeat your opponents.

You have to chase 2 pigs into the pen. To complete this task you have to make the pigs run away from you in the direction of the pen. If you manage to do it without using Axii then you will win the King of Swineherd's crown trophy (15% Bonus gold).

Then Vlodimir will try to prove to Shani that he is able to pick up any girl, which will end in a fight with three brothers (33) of the girl he will try to hook up with.

Drive the pigs into the pen. 0/2 / Defeat your opponents.

10.4. Talk to Master Mirror at the wedding.

At one point of the wedding, Vlodimir will take Shani to the dance, during which Gaunter O'Dimm will appear and dedicate the next song to them.

Talk to Master Mirror at the wedding.

When you're done dancing, approach the table where Gaunter is sitting and talk to him. It won't be a pleasant conversation for Vlodimir.

Talk to Master Mirror at the wedding.

11. Go to the barn for the capping ceremony.

When the midnight comes, go to the barn for the capping ceremony. You may or may not make a speech, then Vlodimir will write a letter to Olgierd where he describes how much fun he had and ask you to give it to his brother.

Go to the barn for the capping ceremony.

Vlodimir will not want to keep the deal and leave Geralt's body, but then Gaunter will appear and get rid of him in a somewhat cruel way. Shani, who apparently had slightly different expectations of your wedding trip, will get into a bad mood and you will get a new quest - A Midnight Clear .

Go to the barn for the capping ceremony.

Hearing Geralt recount that night's festivities, I realized it was a great shame I had not been able to attend. Not only would I have graced the guests with a performance worthy of the occasion, but also I would have witnessed its wonders first-hand, the better to now convey them to you, dear reader… Yet I consider my chance to craft an epic nuptial ballad merely delayed, not missed, for Shani caught the garland during the capping, meaning I will surely be a guest of honor at her wedding in the near future. Vlodimir, I hear, enjoyed himself tremendously, though he was forced off the stage and into the netherworld in a rather unpleasant manner by Master Mirror at the end. Before that happened, he wrote a letter to his brother in his own (that is to say, Geralt’s) blood, thus providing proof that the witcher had fulfilled Olgierd’s wish.

12. Inform Olgierd the task has been completed.

Go back to Olgierd, who you will find in The Alchemy Inn in Oxenfurt and inform him that the task has been completed. At first he will not want to believe you, but he will change his mind when you show him the letter written by Vlodimir.

Inform Olgierd the task has been completed.

As the witcher had suspected, Olgierd would not simply take Geralt’s word for it that Vlodimir had not only risen from the dead (temporarily, at least), but had also had a splendid time. Yet the letter Vlod wrote in blood effectively resolved all Olgierd’s doubts. The task was deemed completed.

After completing Dead Man's Party you will get or will be able to get A Midnight Clear and Scenes From a Marriage (1 of 2).

You can pick up this quest either through the notice or by finding the group on the road southwest out of Fayrlund .

When you reach the area, you'll find a group of onlookers while several elders and younger men argue around a man's body, mangled by tree branches. Approaching close enough will automatically pull you into the conversation. You can ask them more about the Woodland Spirit and clearly see they're split on what to do, if anything: the elder Harald wishes you to leave the spirit be, claiming it makes the villagers strong warriors, while one of the younger men, Sven , explains it's a common beast that kills anyone that wanders into its territory.

XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level

Head back to town and, if you wish, you can talk to both before you decide on a course of action. Despite it being a leshen, Harald is convinced it's the reason they're the strongest warriors in Skellige, even if it kills off many who set out to do the ritual, and urges you to lay out a sacrifice to reinstate the pact of his ancestors. Sven, naturally, wants to do the opposite and have it killed, but before you can do that you'll need to have the marked one dealt with otherwise it'll be reborn again.

Missable achievement: if you side with Harald, you'll miss out on the Woodland Spirit achievement . If you wish to get it but still side with Harald, do a separate save here.

Side with Harald [ ]

Side with Sven [ ]

If you choose Sven, you'll need to find the marked person. While there's no trail, if you've learned enough about leshens, you know just to follow the crows. In this case, head to the last house to the west to find several crows on the roof and, using your Witcher Senses , once you're close enough Geralt will spot the marked person: Hilde, a young woman that's involved with Sven. Bring the bad news to Sven, who still believes it's one of the elders. Before you reveal who it is, you can tell him the person could simply be exiled or let them be killed. After that, once you reveal it's Hilde, Sven will either agree to let her be killed if you chose the killing method, or inform them to run her out of town and not come back if you chose the exile method.

Regardless what happens to Hilde, you must now head into the woods and destroy the 3 totems to make the leshen appear. The first one won't be protected, but the other two will have several wolves guarding them. After the third is destroyed, head to the designated spot for a cutscene where the woodland spirit reveals itself along with several more wolves.

Note: The totems themselves are enemies and the leshen will attack you through them, so don't wait to kill all the wolves before destroying them.

  • With Hearts of Stone expansion, you have another chance to obtain one.
  • After Patch 4.0 (which fixed the issue for Contract: The Oxenfurt Drunk ), this is remains the only quest in the game that cannot be completed without a single failed objective. No matter what you do, one of the objectives for siding with either Harold or Sven will fail.
  • The hearts don't ever disappear from the inventory - after burning them at the altar, nor after the quest ends. They cannot be dropped or sold, the only way to remove them is through a console command though they don't weigh much either. The only way to remove them is on PC via the console command removeitem('sq204_wolf_heart') (executed as many times as the amount of hearts you've looted).

All Correct Play Lines in Witcher 3 (The Play’s the Thing Quest)

Image of Nat Collazo

In The Witcher 3, there is a quest called The Play's the Thing where Geralt of Rivia participates in a scheme to expose a doppler named Dudu. While the quest is meant to be amusing, choosing the correct lines to progress the story can also be challenging. At the quest's beginning, you can choose between a tragedy or a comedy genre for the play. Regardless of which genre you choose, the same five lines will be given to you to memorize during the play. The only difference between the tragedy and comedy options is how the quest ends - selecting a tragedy will lead to a fight. When given the script, be sure to pay attention to the lines, as you will not be able to refer back to them during the game.

As long as you follow all of the play lines we've written below, then you should have no problem with this quest! Even if you happen to mess up any of these lines, Dudu will still do his best to show off and complete the performance.

  • “To slay beasts most foul – ’twas for this I was made, I kill as my calling, not just to get paid.” – cheerful, bold.
  • “Perhaps ‘midst the guests he hides, in fear?” – intense, lively.
  • “Seems men’s hearts can love for changelings foster!” – joyful.
  • “But a heart that is base, such as in this knave aches!” – disgusted.
  • “No monster is he whose shape can shift.” – ceremonial.

The Estate Grounds

Caretaker boss battle, the haunted manor, the painted world, greatest fears boss battle, iris's fate.

After arriving at the Von Everec estate, dismount your horse and speak to the peasant shouting into the garden through a hole in the wall. After sending him on his way, venture into the garden to begin searching for signs of the rose.

Inspect the manure sacks, fountain and bench on the south side of the front yard, then the beehives and easle on the north side. Make your way up to the front doors of the manor and use your Witcher Senses to inspect the broken lamp in front of the door.

Follow the trail of the dragged body down the steps and around the south corner of the manor until you reach a gate. Open it and proceed into the rear garden, again using your Witcher Senses to follow the trail towards the rear hedge rows.

The Caretaker is a formidable opponent, primarily because any of his attacks that successfully land will regenerate a large portion of his health. The best strategy for efficiently defeating this boss is to constantly retreat down the long pathways in the garden, then avoid his special attack and rush in to deal damage.

His special attacks come in three phases (in addition to his basic swipe attacks), which advance when you deplete his health past the dividing lines in his life bar:

Phase One: The Caretaker sends a wave of energy towards his opponent. This is indicated by the large blue-green cone that appears on the ground in front of him a few seconds before his attack. Use a backwards dodge or roll to avoid taking damage, then roll towards him and execute an attack combo while he wrenches his shovel from the ground.

After (roughly) 5 seconds, the Caretaker will recover and another energy circle will appear on the ground around him. Dodge backwards (don't roll - the circle isn't wide enough to merit that) to avoid taking damage in the circle and regenerating your enemy's health, then wait for him to execute his energy wave attack once more.

Phase Two: Instead of the energy wave, The Caretaker will channel his power into the blade of his shovel and charge at you. The best way to avoid this is to perform a roll towards him, avoiding the charge either to the left or to the right.

After avoiding the attack, sweep back in to deal damage while he recovers, then avoid his rejuvenation circle and await another charge.

Phase Three: After depleting 2/3 of his health, The Caretaker will begin using both his charge attack and his energy wave. Keep a close watchful eye on his movements to predict what the attack will be, and continue avoiding them and attacking while he recovers until the fight is done.

After dispatching The Caretaker and wrapping your head around the notion of a talking cat and dog, head inside the manor house to search for Iris.

Make your way through the open door on the left of the foyer to enter the parlor, then pick up the sketchbook on the table after the cutscene.

Go through the door to the right (near the front of the building) to enter the main hall, then head up the stairs and follow the landing around to the left. Move through the burned-out study and onto the balcony, then head back inside via the entrance to the guest bedroom to your right.

After moving through the door into the hall, you'll have a short mini-boss fight with a very angry wraith . Use Quen to prevent yourself taking too much damage, and Yrden to slow or deal additional damage.

If her health gets low, she'll activate a healing portal in one of the four paintings along the walls. Strike these with your sword (or a destructive sign) to prevent her from healing or using them to teleport around the arena (this will also grant her a full heal).

Once the spirit has been returned to the proper realm, move through the door at the other end of the hall to enter the master bedroom.

OPTIONAL QUEST ITEM: Before examining the body on the bed, you can pick up the portrait of Olgeird and Iris from the table at the far side of the room. This is not necessary, however, as you (probably) already have her Sketchbook.

Examine the body on the bed to trigger a dialogue with the mysterious animal spirits. After coming to the conclusion that Iris needs her body interred, head down the front steps and into the yard.

Head to the easel sitting beneath the tree, up the stairs at the front of the yard. Interact with it to begin the burial ritual.

Once Iris's spirit appears, follow her through the portal into the painting.

After arriving on the other side of the painting, make your way down into the garden. There are several ghosts that need busting in this area - they're basically Arachnomorphs - so eliminate them and then examine the memory of Iris and Olgeird near the fountain.

There are three items that could be used in this area - a bouquet of flowers , a glass , and Iris's wedding veil . As pretty as she'd look with flowers, it's the cup that belongs in Iris's hand.

After completing the memory, a giant arachno-spectre appears. Defeating it should be fairly simple, providing you maneuver into a position that allows you to dodge and roll a good amount. Once the spectres have been dispatched, head into the house and examine the dining table scene.

To re-create this scene, you'll need to match the lighting to the painting on the wall opposite the table. Use Igni to light the fire in the hearth, as well as the first two sets of candles closest to the head of the table.

Head upstairs into the master bedroom and pick up the bloody towel on the floor near the bed. Place it in the basin next to Olgeird to complete the memory.

Follow the specters out of the bedroom and into the drawing room across the hall. Pick up the glass from the chair near the window and examine the fruit bowl beneath the portrait on the far wall to take the apple and grapes from the dish.

Examine the work-in-progress on the easel to view the proper layout of the items , then place them on the table next to Olgeird with the grapes on the left, the goblet in the center and the apple on the right to complete the scene.

After Olgeird storms out, follow him into his study on the other side of the main hall. Pick up the piece of chalk from the shelf next to the door, then take the beeswax candles from on top of the desk beneath the window.

Examine the pentagram on the floor in the center of the room. When prompted to place the candles, arrange them on the circle surrounding the pentagram . This will complete the memory.

When the cutscene ends, interact with the portrait of the snowscape on the wall to avoid being burned alive.

After emerging into the blizzard , quickly run to the open doors leading into the manor's basement.

Once inside, pick up the marriage contract from the floor in front of the wine barrels, as well as the mug off of the floor next to Olgeird.

Place the mug in von Everec's hand and the marriage contract in the grasp of Iris's father to complete the scene.

After the cutscene ends, slash your way through the spectres (Ghouls), then make your way up the steps to enter the dining hall.

To complete this final memory, first get the food tray from the shelf next to the door you entered from, then the large bowl off the floor on the other side of the room, and finally the small bowl next to that.

Place the small bowl on the floor near the spirit cat , the large bowl in front of the black dog, and finally the food tray in the hands of the Caretaker to complete the memory.

After the cutscene, head across the foyer into the lounge and pick up the letter on the table to face Iris von Everec's Greatest Fear.

When the battle begins, you're surrounded by six phantoms. Here are some basic tips that will help throughout the fight:

  • Unless you attack them first, the phantoms will only attack one at a time.
  • The phantoms are vulnerable to Aard , especially during the charge-up for their special attack.
  • After successfully parrying an attack, you can execute three sword attacks (light or heavy, it doesn't matter) on your target before they recover.
  • Once you eliminate five of the phantoms, the sixth will attack faster, and will only allow one strike after a successful parry.

After defeating the last phantom, a cutscene will trigger an Geralt will return to the yard of the manor.

Geralt can choose to either take the rose to give Olgeird or not. Doing so will force Iris's spirit from the world, though it will also set the Cat and Dog free. In gratitude they will give you this warnng: "Before we go, some advice - beware of the one called the Man of Glass. Stand in his way, and you'll meet a fate worse than death. Seek salvation in glass that can't be broken."

If Geralt opts to leave her be, he will be transported back to the mortal realm and take a portion of the painting (featuring Iris and her purple rose) to Olgeird instead.

The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone main quest walkthrough

Geralt has reason to dislike Olgierd von Everlec, but there's more to Gaunter O'Dimm than meets the eye. What will you do?

This page, part of our The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt guide and walkthrough and The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone guide and walkthrough , takes you right through the main story quest of the first DLC, Hearts of Stone.

The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone begins when Geralt reads the notice board at the Seven Cats Inn near Novigrad. The adventure that follows is lengthy, convoluted, and completely stand-alone. It's also pretty tough, with nastier enemies than most you will have encountered in your career, and some quick and hard choices to be made.

The_Witcher_3_Wild_Hunt_Hearts_of_Stone_A_witcher_shall_soon_be_buried_The_skies_weep (Copy)

But the rewards - and the story - are worth it. Our walkthrough won't go into exhaustive detail on ever location and random encounter (you're a grown-up and can follow a waypoint) but will take you through from woe to go, noting likely side quest points, highlighting the best loot, and never missing an opportunity to play Gwent.

One top tip is to get the Ofieri runecrafter quest done before you start the main story, assuming you have the 5,000 gold needed to kick it off; his gear will be very useful in the battles ahead. Additionally, if you pick up the quest From Ofier's Distant Shores from the nearby merchant before you start you'll find you collect many of the needed items as you progress. Let's get going.

Evil’s Soft First Touches

You begin this quest by visiting the Von Everec estate after reading the board at the Seven Cats Inn. You’re sent to Oxenfurt to dispatch a monster in the sewers.

Save before entering this dungeon, as you may find yourself outclassed by the enemies you meet and realise you need to level before tackling the expansion. You’ll encounter Shani in here; be sure to choose positive dialogue options if you want to romance her later. There's little else of note in the dungeon - lots of trash loot, a linear path, and then the boss fight.

How to beat the Toad boss fight

Potions, consumables like Golden Oriole and abilities that strengthen you against poison are helpful here, but make sure you’ve also got plenty of health consumables on hand. Cursed Oil helps and the Toad does not like Northern Wind bombs.

Igni works fairly well against the Toad, especially if you have the burning chance variant equipped, as it’ll do damage while you get out of its way. Otherwise, Thunderbolt’s never a bad idea.

Be conservative; hit once or twice and roll far away. The Toad has multiple ground pound attacks which can stagger you. Try to keep to one side or behind it – it’s not easy, the way it jumps around – to avoid its poison spits and tongue attacks.

After the fight, you awaken on a ship. You’ll encounter a limited time decision in the dialogue with the guards. There don’t seem to be any consequences to this choice but the correct option is the third one.

How to beat the Olfieri mage

You’ll face a tough battle when you make landfall. The best tactic is to keep your distance and pick off the easy enemies first, then get the guy with the shield, using Aard to stagger him quickly, before going for the mage. You need to stay very mobile to avoid the magic constantly spammed throughout the fight, so keep rolling.

Meet with Gaunter at the indicated location at midnight – meditate if necessary – and then return to the Von Everec estate to advance the story. There are now two possible quests to pursue. Both of them kick off in Oxenfurt where you’ll want to be next, but only one ends there, so I recommend kicking off Dead Man’s Party first by visiting Shani.

Dead Man’s Party

This is a fun mission. After talking with Shani in Oxenfurt, meet her at the crypt (remembering to be nice to her if you want to initiate a romantic encounter later). Apply spectre oil to your silver sword before descending. Search the crypt thoroughly for some nice loot - mostly coins - before equipping the Censer and filling the room with incense smoke. When you activate the fount in the round central chamber you’ll have to battle half a dozen ghosts at once.

Converse with the remaining ghost for a while and you’ll find you’re off to a party. Your conversation choices here may affect your chances with Shani, so try to balance letting her know your feelings while remaining respectful.

After talking to the happy couple you can engage in various merrymaking activities. You can play cards, fetch a boot out of a lake (use Witcher senses and collect everyone’s shoes, if you like), herd some pigs into a pen (for best results don’t use Signs here), fetch back a fire eater who has gotten lost in the woods, juggle for the crowd’s entertainment, attempt to woo a woman, drink with two different groups, dance with Shani, optionally dance again and finally flirt with two different women. You also need to speak with Gaunter. Watch the capping ceremony to end this part of the mission.

How to romance Shani

If you’d like to complete Shani’s romance mission, A Midnight Clear , be sure to say that you can stay a little longer after the wedding ends. Pretty easy to complete if you’ve been pleasant and respectful so far; just look for a rowan tree in one of the three search zones and bring her some of its blossom as a gift, instead of a drink. Be honest about your intentions to lover her and leave her, and you won’t find her uninterested.

Whether you romance Shani or not, report back to Olgierd in Oxenfurt. Be sure to challenge him to Gwent while he’s here, if that’s your thing, then head onto his second mission.

  • Next: Assemble a crew and complete a heist in Open Sesame.
  • Back to The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone guide .

Open Sesame

This mission includes some very valuable loot and keen story material. Bring a couple of thousand gold with you for best results.

Start by visiting the Borsodi auction house; a bit of chatter at the door and an old friend will arrive to help you gain entry.

Inside you can optionally choose to speak to three of Vivaldi’s friends; it’s really worth doing so. Save before you approach each one. The Countess will sell you Viper School diagrams as well as some alchemy recipes; be sure to buy them all as they’re very reasonably priced. Afterwards, go onto the balcony and search for her earring for some worthwhile extra dialogue that will inspire her to help you out later.

The newly rich gentleman will challenge you to Gwent, offering a pretty decent cash prize. Offer to share your take with Vivaldi if you like. When you speak with the art snob, tell him you know a bit about art and then choose the portrait of the merchant; he’ll give you a hot tip for the auction. You can share this with Vivaldi or capitalise on it yourself.

In the auction, you can bid or not as you choose and depending on your finances. If you didn’t speak with the Countess you’ll find yourself stuck with a useless item. Unfortunately, you don’t get what you came for no matter how you approach the dialogue afterwards, but you’re soon approached with an interesting offer.

Before you meet the stranger at the herbalist’s hut, pick up the Without a Trace secondary quest from a notice board; the quest giver is at your next destination so you can save a bit of time.

The stranger will task you with assembling a crew for a heist, as well as reducing guard numbers, so you have three quests to complete.

Open Sesame: Safecracker

You can choose which of the two potential members you want in your crew for this one. I went with the lockpick located within an easy walk of the Herbalist’s hut. You have several options as to how to convince his guards to let him go; be prepared for a fight if you can’t pay up, use Axii, or win at Gwent. Gwent is, of course, the VG247 approved method, and will quickly and easily resolve this quest.

The_Witcher_3_Wild_Hunt_Hearts_of_Stone_Hold_still_dammit_RGB (Copy)

Open Sesame: Breaking and Entering

Again, you can choose which of the two potential members you want in your crew. I went with Eveline. To convince her, you only need to agree to appear in her show; it’s a simple matter of shooting five apples held by one of her colleagues. The foot is the trickiest one, but it’s not a difficult challenge. Be sure to visit the merchant in the camp before you leave; he sells Gwent cards and will reward you with one of the new cards if you beat him at a match.

Open Sesame: Witcher Seasonings

This quest is pretty easy; open your Alchemy menu and scroll down to the Quest section at the bottom to craft the necessary potion. The ingredients are commonly available but go back to the herbalist’s hut if you’re missing something.

Head to Oxenfurt. Approach each of the three search zones in turn, and use Witcher senses to spot two red audio markers. Approach, still using Witcher senses, and listen. The third set of guards reveal the location of the chef you’re after. Go there during daylight hours.

If you have Axii at a high enough level equipped you can convince the cook to help you for free; otherwise, you’ll need a wad of cash. With that done, it’s time to complete the heist.

Open Sesame (continued)

Meet back at the herbalist’s hut. In the ensuing conversation, you can choose to head straight to the heist immediately or make your own way there; it doesn’t matter much but gives you a chance to save before you start the operation.

Once inside the tower, make a save file – there are lots of important choices ahead. Use Witcher senses to spot an important store note in the first room, then descend the stairs. When you head down the second flight you’ll encounter a fight; there doesn’t seem to be any way to avoid this or to prevent the alarm being triggered.

You now have to make several choices in rapid succession. Agree to help the stranger by negotiating with the guards for best results. You can get through this encounter without having another tiresome fight by first asking the guards to leave, then asking for a wagon. When asked what kind, say anything will do. This will prevent the guards from rushing in to attack, and please the stranger. Whatever happens, one of your team members will leave.

The remaining three continue downwards. As you pass through the storage rooms use Witcher senses and look carefully for notes on desks; you can learn some interesting stuff down here. Save again when the vault door opens; you’ll drop into a pit and have to fight some spiders.

Inside the first room of the vault, avoid the door and circle around collecting all the treasure – your purse will be a lot heavier after this night’s work, and there are plenty of items that can be broken down for crafting materials like gem dust. You may want to save again before proceeding to the next room.

When you finally enter the heart of the vault you’ll have multiple dialogue choices to make. You get what you need no matter what you do, but one important note is that if you want to get out of here with the stranger alive it’s best not to hesitate by saying you want to stay out of the two men’s affairs.

After the fight, you’ll have to deal with whichever of the two men is alive. If it’s the stranger, you’ll have to negotiate for your prize, and if it all goes wrong, you’ll have to kill him to get it. Choose the calmest, polite dialogue options to get out of there with him alive.

Before you take the ladder down to the secret tunnel out of the vault, search every treasure and loot box. There’s some very valuable stuff in here, and most importantly, one of the Viper diagrams.

Once you make it outside, return to Olgierd to end the quest. If you’ve done both of his first two tasks, you’ll be able to ask him extra questions and see an additional scene where he gives you the third task.

  • Next: Explore Olgierd's estate, and history, in Scenes from a Marriage.

The_Witcher_3_Wild_Hunt_Hearts_of_Stone_I'm_sure_the_lumps_nothing_Geralt_but_I'd_rather_not_diagnose_you_at_a_party (Copy)

Scenes from a Marriage

Head back to the Von Everec estate and be ready for battle. After chatting with the man outside, enter and search all the indicated zones to be prompted to check the back yard. Before doing so, approach the front door and look for the missing thief. Follow the blood trail around the manor until you encounter a cutscene.

When you move a little further into the yard you’ll trigger a boss fight.

How to beat the Caretaker boss fight

Quen is some help here, but most other signs are useless. Relict Oil is a major aid, as ever you can always fall back on Thunderbolt.

This guy’s big and slow but has a painful weakness – his back. Roll or dodge to the side and behind him, so you can avoid his short attack combo. Be wary of the way his swings curl around his body, as you might not be out of range after a single dodge.

When his weapon is glowing, roll further away; his final attack in the combo will cast an area of effect which will stun you, causing you to miss your real opening. As soon as you see it glow on the ground, roll back in and behind him – the effect vanishes instantly and the Caretaker will pause momentarily to gather his strength, allowing you to score multiple critical hits on his back. Roll away as soon as he twitches, as the same area of effect stun triggers when he raises his weapon again.

Once you get his health about a third of the way down he’ll start summoning minions. These shades go down quickly but spawn in huge numbers. I found it best to unlock the camera and keep an eye on the Caretaker to avoid his attacks as I ran around hitting the adds; they die so easily and attack so slowly you don’t even need to look at them. Then, when the Caretaker did his combo, I rolled in and wailed on his back again just as I had during the earlier phase of the fight. It only took a few rounds.

When the battle is over, don’t rush into the manor. There’s a treasure chest nearby you should plunder, and if you search the grounds you’ll find a hairbrush you’ll need later.

The path inside the manor is always linear. There’re plenty of loot containers but most of them are just junk. Head into the parlour for a little scene with a wraith of some kind. Be sure to loot the treasure chest in here, which has some good stuff, and grab the sketch journal from the table before proceeding.

The ceiling caves in as you enter the central hall but you won’t be hit unless you sprint in. There’s not much in the dining room so take the stairs up, walking to avoid an attack at the very top. Enter the study and go out the door to the balcony, circling around to the next room. Prepare for a fight before exiting; you’ll meet the wraith in the gallery.

How to beat the Wraith from the Painting boss fight

This can be tough if you’re under-levelled. Apply Spectre Oil, obviously. Unlike most wraiths, this one isn’t wary of running right into your Yrden traps, but be aware that this is a real sword fight; signs and potions aren’t the answer.

The trick here is parrying and waiting for an opening; don’t just hack away or the wraith will return the favour, and it has more health than you. You must bide your time and attack precisely when it leaves you an opening.

There are paintings on either side of the gallery and the wraith will frequently leech extra life out of them; as soon as you see the green glow, quickly untether the camera and run over to slash the indicated painting to put a stop to that bullshit.

the_witcher_3_hearts_of_stone

Once the wraith is down you have a clear run at the bedchamber. Before approaching the figure on the bed, pick up the portrait on the far side of the room, and collect any loot you want. Once you examine the body, you’ll be taken outside.

You want the search zone near the easel; examine it to trigger the next scene. During the ceremony you must choose something to say and place one of the items you’ve collected. I chose to mention Iris’s art and place her sketchbook, which seemed to work out well.

In the mysterious new world you’ll be transported to, watch out for arachnomorph spectre enemies, as well as patches of buzzing light that drain your health fast. Approach the central fountain and search around for a cup on the ground; place it in Iris’s hand to continue.

You’ll then battle multiple arachnomorph spectres include a giant one; this is easy to beat if you back it up against a hedge, though, as its speed is its greatest asset.

Once the path is clear, head inside the manor and follow the linear path through the rooms. In the dining room you must light several candles and the fire to trigger the scene, after which you’ll fight a human-shaped spectre. In the bedroom, find the bloody towel and place it by the washbowl. In the studio, take the bowl of fruit and the goblet, and arrange them on the table in this order from left to right: grapes, goblet, apple.

There are half a dozen human-shaped spectres in the gallery. Once they’re down, continue to the study. You need to pick up some candles and chalk, then examine the pentagram on the floor. Save your game, then place the candles on the circle outside the pentagram to continue.

When you are trapped in the fire, run to the painting in the corner and examine it to escape; look for the blue-ish stream of particles to guide you to its location in the room. You’ll then face a new hazard. As soon as you have control, run towards the manor and slightly right; instead of going up the stairs to the door, look for the open hatch to the cellars.

Safe inside, move onto another frozen tableau. Pick up the mug and the contract; the mug goes with Olgierd and the contract with Iris’s father. Moving on to the dining room, find the small bowl, the large bowl and the food platter; it should be obvious which belongs to the cat, the dog and the Caretaker.

Now save your game. In the final room, examine the letters on the table to begin a tough fight.

Hot to beat Iris Von Everec’s Worst Nightmare boss fight

This is not easy. The trick is to make sure there’s only ever one baddie attacking you at once. Immediately roll away from the active creature and once you’re at a safe distance, take one of the passive bodies down with a few heavy hits. Repeat until there’s only one left, at which point it’s safe to close the gap and start duelling. When you see black smoke as the enemy's spirit passes into a new body, wail on the new one; it will take a few seconds to start attacking, and with luck you'll have it dead before it fully wakes.

Be wary of these enemies; they hit very, very hard and can take out almost your whole health bar in one solid swing. When battling the active creatures, as opposed to the passive ones, use fast strikes, not heavy blows.

Do not allow multiple bodies to come to life simultaneously if you can help it. If you don’t have the strength to take the dummies down in a few hits even when using Thunderbolt, use Quen liberally and try to duel your way through it. Good luck!

Once the fight is over only dialogue remains of this quest. I don’t think it matters what you say, but I said Olgierd is not happy, and asked for the rose. Once you have that in hand, it’s time to end Olgierd and O'Dimm's contract.

  • Next: the story comes to a climax in Whatsoever A Man Soeth

The_Witcher_3_Wild_Hunt_Hearts_of_Stone_Tell_me_witcher_is_this_about_love (Copy)

Whatsoever A Man Soeth

Back in Oxenfurt, enter the inn to trigger a lengthy scene. When this is over you have a new destination, but first, go visit Shani if you want to know a bit more about what you’re getting into.

If you do decide you want some extra context, which I recommend, follow Shani to the academy. Once she goes inside, leave via the bridge gate, dive into the river, and swim to sure. Follow the walls around to meet her, battling a few Drowners on the way.

How to enter Master Shakelock's house

Inside the academy, you'll have to fight four witch hunters, including one with a crossbow. Once they're down, knock on master Shakelock's door. He won't answer, so turn around and look directly behind you for a ladder. Climb it, follow the path around to a second ladder, and finally jump off the roof to the next balcony. Use Aard to shatter the door and gain entry.

Shakelock is on the ground floor. You can obtain the key to the front door from him when your conversation ends. The best way out of the academy is back across the courtyard you entered by and straight through the watchtower on the walls; there's a treasure chest in here you should grab.

Now we're off to the final confrontation. The nearest signposts are Beken and Toderas. Your waypoint will lead you into a dark cave; you may want to use Cat or a torch to get through this. Ignore your HorsePS when it freaks out and insists you leave the way you came; just keep climbing higher into the cave, jumping the gap when necessary, to emerge on a cliff outside. Save before you step out into the light if you want a backup.

O'Dimm and Olgierd will face off; you can and maybe should opt to intervene and try to save the troubled man. In any case, you'll be transported into a nightmare land where you must hunt down the demon who has you trapped.

How to find Master Mirror

The riddle isn't too tricky and, well, the answer's in the mission prompt - it's a mirror. Still, getting there isn't easy, as there's a strict time limit.

To start with, don't stop for anything. Don't stop for loot; don't stop to ave anyone; don't investigate anything; don't even fight monsters. Just keep sprinting.

Your goal is the house with the red windows which is visible from almost everywhere on the map, but the winding, switchbacking paths and various pits don't make it easy to get to. Your best bet is to use the mini-map to find paths, and reorient yourself when you reach a junction. You may fail a few times if you're not to hot on in-game geography, but you'll soon come to recognise the shape of things.

Once you reach the house, make sure you have full health, then sprint in the front door and down the long corridor down the stairs. You can't avoid the fall but try to roll to minimise damage. Approach the nearby mirror so it shatters, then forget about running around looking at the others. Instead, pass the first tempting set of stairs and climb into the fountain in the centre of the map.

Use Witcher senses to highlight points of interest. Examine the floor and Geralt will remark that there was water here, once. Now examine the back wall for him to comment that he can hear water on the other side. Use Aard to break the wall, and - well, spoilers.

Well done, Witcher! You've successfully completed the main quest of Hearts of Stone. There's heaps of other content out there, though, so why not return to our The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone guide ?

Hi there, after downloading the next gen update for Witcher 3 PC, I have lost all voice audio, there are still sound effects and music but no voices. I have read that you need to go into windows sound settings and change your audio device to stereo to fix this, but m speakers are already set to stereo so that cant be the problem. It was working fine prior to the update. What can I do to fix this bug?

I have a version of the GOTY which is heavily modded, but that's sitting tightly in an external disk now that Patch 4.0 came out. I redownloaded the game, then patched it with the update, and all voice and special effect sounds, including the tapping on the main menu, are gone. In my greediness, at first I forgot I had the modded game installed, so it simply wouldn't launch after downloading the update. Due to optic fibre installation in the area, wifi is sh*tty, so I'd rather not waste another 3 hours on redownloading everything. Edit: Steam claims everything is verified, validated etc.

TomAzepam

After the first scenes when Gerald awakens by the campfire with Vesimir all the dialogue audio is gone for me too. It’s not my PC as their mouths not moving either is a tell. All was fine till then. Unplayable like this.

As said before if nothing helps it's usually best to contact CDPR support with the link that I mentioned.

Back : i have fixed this audio bug by uninstall the game and mods and make a fresh install an then all was fine

None of the above worked for me, and now it's exhibiting the other common problem of the patch, low lps. I'll either write to the company or wait for the patch, as I'm sure they're already working on it.

i guess, i found a solution go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Witcher 3\content and delete the patch1 and patch0.. it worked for me. @ NausicaaG @ ConfusedSpaceDuck @ WorldOfLulz

@dreadful212 Thanks, will def try it if the hotfix doesnt... fix it Edit: Voice and special effect sounds are back with the hotfix, though the fps is odd, forcing the lip movements to be out of sync with the spoken dialogue. Plus all the water is gone - easy for treasure hunting, but annoying otherwise. That being said, everything works perfectly fine with DirectX11. Wouldn't think that the year old gaming computer I spent a ton of money on would be considered old by cdpr, but oh well. Guess we'll be waiting for another hotfix or do more tinkering

@dreadful212 Thanks for this, it worked. Nothing else did, including the hotfix. Without removing those two folders, I only had sound effects. No voice or music. Deleting the folders returned everything to normal.

Does anyone here has experience with a GOG installation? All dialogue is missing for me as well - except if I wear a headset. I have tried changing in-game options -Home Cinema/TV/headset/..,) I don't have any MODS, I have uninstalled and re-installed the game, I have checked audio drivers, I also looked for any patch0, patch1, etc, but cannot find this in GOG file structure.

N0madS0uL said: I have the same issue, bought my game back then on EA Store, they finaally updated it, seems GoG version but my sound is also partly screwed, no voice or effects audio, some come through but mostly the sound is gone. I recall the audio being an issue on my previous rig also and then I played with my headset to work around this, but I really wished CDPR would have resolved this old issue by now. EDIT: Seems the solution provided by @dreadful212 worked, so thanks for that and maybe it will work for you too @tuffytaff Click to expand...

The Witcher 3: Imperial Audience Main Quest Walkthrough

To bow or not to bow?

Quick Links

Starting the imperial audience, choosing your outfit, bowing to the emperor, meeting yennefer.

With the Griffin slain, it's time to wrap up The Witcher 3's prologue and find Yennefer. Geralt's lover of yore and the focus of his search kindly cut this short by picking him up from the Inn right as he finishes off some local drunks.

While it might appear that the hard part is over, it has only just begun, and it includes an audience with the Emperor of Nilfgaard himself, Emhyr var Emreis. Royal encounters are difficult for Geralt, especially considering what he went through in the second game. If you are trying to master Nilfgaardian etiquette or find out what happens if you ignore it, this guide will help you.

This quest starts in the aftermath of The Beast of White Orchard and the incredibly short quest The Incident at White Orchard. Having narrowly escaped an ambush from the Wild Hunt and arriving at the royal palace at Vizima, Geralt is being treated with a bath.

His pleasant distraction is cut short by the arrival of the Chamberlain who begins preparing the witcher for meeting the Emperor, starting with a shave. A high-ranking Nilfgaardian, Voorhis, will enter shortly after to question Geralt.

The beard will grow back , immersively and over time, if you think that Geralt looks better with it.

If you have chosen to simulate a Witcher 2 save, Voorhis will question Geralt extensively about the events of the second game, allowing you to adjust some aspects of the world, affecting some characters. We have covered what each decision entails in its own guide, below.

Related: The Witcher 3: Should You Simulate A Witcher 2 Save?

With the questioning completed, Geralt is shepherded away to get dressed. As pleasing as his chiseled body may be, the Emperor might not appreciate the view. The Chamberlain will have you choose from three outfits.

You can sell the clothes later , if you do not mind lugging the weight around. There is no penalty for taking all three to sell for some coin on the side.

There is no difference between the three on a gameplay level. They offer no protection in battle and should be discarded as soon as possible. Pick the set you like the most and equip it to continue.

The Chamberlain has a final thing to ensure before Geralt is sent to the Emperor; ensuring that he can bow. He provides you with a demonstration that you will need to match. Once that is accomplished, he leads Geralt to the throne room.

To bow, select the option that has Geralt put his left leg forward, and right hand on his chest.

You will have to choose if you will bow to the Emperor when you arrive. Choosing to bow will have the Emperor make a snide, if otherwise harmless remark. Refusing to do so will upset the Chamberlain. Given that he will be punished on Geralt's behalf, his anger would be understandable.

Regardless of your choice, Emhyr will explain to Geralt that Ciri has returned and the witcher will be paid to find her before the Wild Hunt does. This sets up the overarching objective that will guide you through the rest of the game.

With the meeting concluded, it is time to have a conversation with Yennefer.

The Chamberlain will bring Geralt to the sorceress' office, waiting outside until the witcher is done.

You can help yourself to the food and books at the Palace. It's free money, after all.

Yennefer talks more about the task at hand, sharing what she has learned about Ciri and the stakes at hand. Having taken advantage of Nilfgaard's assets, she has identified three leads for Geralt to pursue.

She also suggests talking to ambassador var Attre in the next room. As a diplomat, he is well-equipped to give Geralt a primer on the political situation of each area. While optional , it provides valuable context from a Nilfgaardian perspective on each region's local issues.

A chest containing Patch 4.0's new equipment can be found in Yennefer's office.

Finally, with the objective set and leads gained, Geralt can begin his search for his long-lost daughter. Return to the Chamberlain to reclaim your equipment and take the fast travel point out to your first destination to end the quest.

While not a requirement, it is advisable to focus your efforts on searching Velen first. The game is balanced with the expectation that you will start there.

Quest: Imperial Audience

Two lines of dialogue with ambassador var attre when meeting him for the first time in vizima.

These two lines at the start of the conversation with Ambassador var Attre do not play in the final game and were marked as "to be deleted" by the devs.

Ambassador Var Attre: That is I. And you must be Geralt. The witcher known as the White Wolf… or alternatively, the Butcher of Blaviken.

Geralt: Geralt's fine, really.

Quest: Caravan Attack

Cut dialogue option with merchant anselm.

The following is a cut dialogue choice that Geralt could say to Anselm after killing the bandits attacking his Caravan. The dialogue is marked "mq1011_REMOVED" indicating that it was intentionally cut and not the result of a bug.

Geralt choice: Should've paid 'em more.

Geralt: Probably decided you weren't paying them enough…

Novigrad Trader 01: Nonsense. I paid them more than they were worth. A rumor went about that ghouls and other such monstrosities prowled the roads…

Novigrad Trader 01: They demanded more, as no one else dared ride this way.

Geralt: Think these boys could've handled some monsters?

Novigrad Trader 01: They fell to a solitary witcher… so I truly doubt it.

Quest: Hazardous Goods

Dialogue with the cart owner about nilfgaard bringing the plague to velen.

This quest was once part of the Catriona Plague quest line but was left in the final game even though the rest of the quest line was cut. It was modified to have all references to Nilfgaard participating in the plague's spread removed. However, one exchange related to this was left in the w2scene file.

Geralt: Mentioned some pox from the Black Ones?

Verden Peasant 03: Aye! Uh, well, they brought an illness to Velen. Treat their own, they do, while our folk drop like flies. Pfoo! Ooh - whoa! Argh, ooh I just got a waft, oh the stench!

Geralt: Who blames the Nilfgaardians? Who says it's their plague?

Verden Peasant 03: Ealdorman of Lindenvale. 'Twere him paid me to bury these corpses - in a ditch, he says, far from the village as possible. He don't want folk panickin'.

Verden Peasant 03: Not the dumbest man, no… uhh, a folk activist or somesuch.

Quest: Dwarven Document Dilemma

Additional dialogue with rostan muggs during dwarven document dilemma quest where geralt can ask for more money.

There the following is a cut dialogue choice where Geralt could ask Rostan Muggs for more money while searching for his lost documents. The dialogue choice is block by a fact called "mq1028_fake_fact" and cannot be obtained in the final game. This likely indicates the developers cut the choice on purpose.

Geralt choice: Need more coin.

Geralt: Seem really valuable to you, these papers. Think you oughta pay me more.

Dwarf Man 02: More, but how? I ain't got more.

Quest: The Sunstone

Conversations between two clan drummond guards.

This conversation does not appear in the final game. The participants do not spawn at all. Unlike the all bugged community conversations, this conversation not being present in the final is not caused by an incorrectly configured w2comm file. In fact, a w2comm file for the participants does not exist in the game files at all. This likely indicates that the devs recorded dialogue and generated a w2scene file for it but simply forgot to create the w2comm file.

Skellige Warrior 01: Look, the Craites' lackey's back!

Skellige Warrior 02: Crach entrustin' his doin's to continentals - that's why he's damn impossible to reason with.

[If Hjalmar is not king]

Skellige Warrior 01: I'd even 'ave thought Cerys fit to be queen if she'd only achieved somethin' on her own.

Skellige Warrior 02: Folk say she'd 'ave perished on Spikeroog if not for that witcher.

Skellige Warrior 01: Might've been better for the lass that way…

[If Hjalmar is king]

Skellige Warrior 01: I'd even 'ave thought Hjalmar worthy of the crown if he'd slain the giant himself.

Skellige Warrior 02: Folk say the whelp would've returned from Undvik as gnawed bones if not for that witcher.

Skellige Warrior 01: There, that - might've been more fortunate for the lad…

Quest: Something Ends, Something Begins (Witcheress Ending)

Extended final line by ciri.

Right before the end of final version of the game ends Ciri says "Let's try it out, then." and sheaths her new sword. However, there is additional line Ciri can right after this that was unused. Note that if this additional line is used Ciri will sheath her new sword right after this additional line is said and not after she says "Let's try it out, then.". Also note there is an entire alternative version of the final cutscene unused in the game files. This additional line is not part of that scene. It is an addition to the scene currently used in the game.

Cirilla: The Path awaits. Come on.

Quest: Evil's Soft First Touches

Extended dialogues, clues, and one-liners while exploring the oxenfurt sewers with shani.

CDPR intentionally cut the following dialogues, clues, and one-liners that were meant to play while exploring the sewers with Shani. The reason is unknown.

[Additional clues upon entering the sewers before meeting Shani]

Geralt: Strange slime…

Geralt: Dead drowner. Covered in the same strange slime.

[Upon approaching Shani]

Shani: Oh, come on. Please…

Geralt: Noise coming from the other side of the wall.

[While traversing the sewers with Shani]

Geralt: When did you get pressed into service?

Shani: As soon as war broke out.

Shani: First they had me patching up folk at the Battle of Dorian, then at Vizima, and finally in Velen.

Geralt: Been to those battlefields. Must've been tough.

Shani: It's war. Severed limbs, blood and guts.

Shani: Remember, I learned how to operate under Milo "Rusty" Vanderbeck, at the Battle of Brenna.

Shani: Graduates of his school can handle anything.

Geralt: Fresh bruises on the bodies. From a blunt, heavy object.

Shani: And no cuts.

Geralt: Mhm. A few scratches. And everyone's covered in the same strange slime…

Geralt: Interesting. See that wet spot on the ground?

Shani: Mhm. It leads into that channel.

Geralt: Monster must've come in through there. And left the same way.

Shani: Any idea what might've killed them?

Geralt: Not yet. For now, my bet's on something big. A zeugl, maybe.

Geralt: Need to find its lair.

Geralt: Strange. Drowners' bodies are covered in slime.

Shani: Hm, must've run into the beast, just like the soldiers.

Geralt: Beginning to doubt this is a zeugl…

Shani: What else is that large and lives in sewers?

Geralt: Dunno… Maybe a giant toad?

Shani: Mhm. Right.

Geralt: We have to find its lair. Need to hurry.

[Further oneliners when examining bodies]

Geralt: Body's covered in the same strange slime.

Geralt: Swelling on much of the body. Blows from a large, blunt object.

Geralt: Can't say I envy him. Horrible way to die.

Quest: The Man from Cintra

Conversation between a man and a woman at the mandragora party.

Toussaint Noble Man 03: The Mandragora is soon to feature a performance by Geoffrey de Girion, I heard.

Toussaint Noble Woman 03: Personally, I've never been fond of his "art."

Toussaint Noble Man 03: Why ever not? A painter forging his works in the public eye? Why it's true and intimate contact with the creative process.

Toussaint Noble Woman 03: He pee-pees. On a canvas.

Toussaint Noble Man 03: Of course he does! He himself claims his art issues from the deepest recesses of his being.

Conversation between two servants at the Mandragora party

Beauclair Clerk 01: I'm done, dead on my feet.

Beauclair Clerk 03: Stop complaining. This is far from the worst job, even with all the maniacs we must serve.

Beauclair Clerk 01: Yet it's equally far from being the best. I've mopped up so much sick this week, I feel as if I work in a cesspit.

Beauclair Clerk 03: Artists must drink a great deal in order to create, or so I've heard. And the public must drink just as much to understand.

Quest: The Warble of a Smitten Knight

Conversation between boy and girl in the tourney grounds.

Toussaint Boy 02: Hey! He fought in the tourney! He looked taller in the arena…

Toussaint Girl 02: I was there. Papa took me. I saw him fight the other knights! What a sight, what a bumbotching! Ooh!

Community: White Orchard

Boy sings a song about radovid's death during something ends, something begins.

[Plays in outcomes where Radovid is dead]

Verden Boy 01: King Radovid upon his throne, fought the Black Ones all alone.

Verden Boy 01: Six feet under now he sleeps, dreams of naked witches' teets.

Verden Boy 01: Dreams of naked witches' teets!

Community: Velen

Conversation between a girl and her grandmother in claywitch.

Verden Old Woman 01: Told you not to gaze in the well, Yanna!

Verden Girl 02: All right, gran.

Verden Old Woman 01: Your face could catch some vodnik's eye.

Verden Old Woman 01: And your ma don't have coin for a witcher.

Two conversations between plague infected men and women in a field hospital near Devil's Pit

These are unused conversation intended to take place between plague infected NPCs enslaved by Nilfgaard in a field hospital near the Devil's Pit. These conversations along with their associated NPCs were left unused after The Witcher 3's infamous Catriona Plague quest line was removed during development. These conversations are one of the only remnants of the Catriona Plague quest line in the retail game's files.

[First conversation]

Verden Infected Woman 02: What good was it… This whole voyage…

Verden Infected Man 03: The Black Ones might take mercy. You gotta keep hopin'…

Verden Infected Woman 02: No hope left. 'Stead o' dyin' at home, I'll die at Nilfgaard's doorstep, like a stray dog…

[Second conversation]

Verden Infected Man 01: You've any strength left?

Verden Infected Man 02: Still kickin'. *Cough cough*

Verden Infected Man 02: Then come help. We've got bodies to bury…

Community: Gustfields

Conversation between 3 redanian soldiers in a small camp southeast of yantra.

Redanian Soldier 02: Ruben, you've served in some wars, so tell us… Black Ones're sittin' across the Pontar, a stone's throw away. Why the bloody hell don't we attack?

Redanian Soldier 04: Cause we've gotten no such order.

Redanian Soldier 02: Not askin' you, mutton head. Ruben? What's Radovid waitin' for?

Redanian Soldier 01: For Nilfgaard to grow weak. Rumors abound: not all the Black Ones love their emperor, some plot's afoot to dislodge him.

Redanian Soldier 04: So if it's growin' hot in his breeches, why don't Emhyr attack us?

Redanian Soldier 01: He's waitin', too. Bugger knows half of our troops are mercenaries, and sooner or later we'll not have the wherewithal to pay 'em.

Conversation between 2 peasants in Yantra

Novigrad Peasant 02: Hey… d'you see Sabien bought a new horse?

Novigrad Peasant 03: Mhm. A bay, eighteen hands at the withers and stronger than an ox. Could plow through stone with that'un.

Novigrad Peasant 02: Where'd he get the gold? Wed off his daughter last, must've paid a dowry…

Novigrad Peasant 02: To me reckonin' he's keepin' mages in his hut. And you know them. Rich buggers.

Novigrad Peasant 02: We gotta tell the hunters! Not that I wish Sabien ill, but we just can't let filth like that live among us, pollute the village.

Community: Oxenfurt

Conversation between 2 townsmen in the oxenfurt marketplace.

Redanian Townsman 02: Why don't they play the one about "the fresher who caught his arm in a thresher"?

Redanian Townsman 03: They can't sing that anymore. Contains heresies.

Redanian Townsman 02: Heresies? How's that? I don't remember anything…

Redanian Townsman 03: "Bleeding out his heart-blood's warmth, 'Fire, save me!' the student cried. Thrusting his stump into the hearth, he found heat, but still died."

Redanian Townsman 02: But that's for laughs… Frock-wearing idiots. Not an ounce of humor in them!

Conversation between 2 witch hunters near Deireadh Prison

Witch Hunter 01: You hear our latest orders?

Witch Hunter 02: Mhm. Kill every fifth prisoner. Whether he's been tried or not. Whoever's drawn, burns.

Witch Hunter 01: We haven't got the wood to make that many pyres! Who issued this order?

Witch Hunter 02: King himself. Means it as a warning. Folk need to know that for every sorceress rescued, dozens more'll die.

Community: Novigrad

Two conversations between 2 men near vivaldi bank.

These conversations do not appear in the final game. The participants do not spawn at all. Unlike the all bugged community conversations, these conversations not being present in the final is not caused by an incorrectly configured w2comm file. In fact, a w2comm file for the participants does not exist in the game files at all. This likely indicates that the devs recorded dialogue and generated w2scene files but simply forgot to create the necessary w2comm files.

[1st conversation]

Novigrad Rich Man 01: Koviri yews are a sure thing, pure profit at no risk.

Novigrad Rich Man 02: Mhm. You said the same of Temerian bonds.

Novigrad Rich Man 01: An exception that proves the rule. The appearance of unexpected circumstances.

Novigrad Rich Man 02: Hm, I suppose that's true… Very well, buy them… After all, lightning never strikes in one place twice in a row, does it?

[2nd conversation]

Novigrad Rich Man 02: I've everything invested in asymmetric derivative instruments.

Novigrad Rich Man 03: Derivative instruments… Is this… related to music?

Novigrad Rich Man 02: Hah, no, they're financial tools. In a nutshell, you pay for goods before they're produced.

Novigrad Rich Man 03: So, essentially… you buy a pig in a poke? Hm, thanks but no thanks.

Conversation between nobleman and shopkeeper in Gildorf exotics shop

Novigrad Trader 01: I recommend the ebony masks from Zerrikania. Perfect for a parlor wall. Tasteful yet exotic.

Novigrad Nobleman 01: I don't know if they're all that exotic… Saw something similar at Count Winter's. Two years past.

Novigrad Trader 01: Well then, perhaps this totem from Velen? Complete novelty. Very folksy. You might even call it playful.

Novigrad Nobleman 01: Are those ears human?

Novigrad Trader 01: Please. But they do look real, don't they? Take it, play a joke on your guests!

Conversation between a poor man and a prostitute in Crippled Kate's

Novigrad Poor Man 01: Me mate swears he saw one woman service ten Johns at once! Had 'em yelpin' with joy, every last one!

Novigrad Prostitute 01: Mhm. Wonder how many bottles your mate had emptied beforehand. Ten, I wager - one for each John.

Novigrad Poor Man 01: He don't drink. He's clergy.

Novigrad Prostitute 01: So he don't drink, but he goes to brothels. And that's fine?

Novigrad Poor Man 01: What's the one to do with the other?

Two conversations between patrons and T.K. Hodgson in T.K. Hodgson's bookshop

Novigrad Trader 01: What can I get for you, m'lady? A Toussaint romance? Or perhaps a cookery tome?

Novigrad Citizen Woman 03: Neither. Michael of Thorn's "Compendium Artium Liberalium," please.

Novigrad Trader 01: Aha… For your brother, is it?

Novigrad Citizen Woman 03: No. For me. And don't you try to short change me, either - I also know how to count.

[2nd converation]

Novigrad Rich Man 01: So, um… "The Uncensored Ars Amandi Position Almanac" - do you have it?

Novigrad Trader 01: I'm afraid not. It's on the banned books list. But… I've got something similar.

Novigrad Rich Man 01: The Collected Sermons of the Prophet Lebioda"

Novigrad Trader 01: Merely the cover. Nothing but engravings inside. So? I can give you a modest discount…

Two conversations between two different women and Elihal in Elihal's shop

Elihal: I recommend this dress. It makes one feel truly feminine.

Novigrad Citizen Woman 02: With all due respect, master elf… What could you know about that?

Elihal: A tailor just knows such things. Call it a sixth sense. So? May I pack it for you?

Elihal: What can I get the lady? A nightdress? A cloak?

Novigrad Peasant Woman 02: Here for the doublet. Felt, it were. Put in the order with your sister.

Elihal: Ah, yes, I remember… I mean, so she told me. One moment, I'll bring it. Perhaps the lady would like to try on a bonnet while she waits?

Conversation between 2 noblemen near Honeyfill Meadworks before Contract: The Apiarian Phantom

Novigrad Nobleman 01: Have you heard? Meiersdorf's bees are dropping like, well, flies. If there's disease in the air, it could very well spread to our hives.

Novigrad Nobleman 02: It could be disease… But it could also be the Apiarian Phantom.

Novigrad Nobleman 01: Pshaw, don't tell me you believe that nonsense.

Novigrad Nobleman 02: I don't, but… well, Meiersdorf's posted a bounty - for driving off some wraith. So perhaps there's something to it.

Dialogue with Vimme Vivaldi to cash a Bill of Exchange

Geralt could use the following dialogue option to exchange a Bill of Exchange item for crowns at Vivaldi Bank. However, this option was cut when the corresponding Bill of Exchange item that could be found in open world was also cut.

Geralt choice: Got a bill of exchange to redeem.

Geralt: Got a bill of exchange. Need to redeem it.

Vimme Vivaldi: I'll need a spell to verify that the issuer's credit worthy. But it shouldn't take long.

Elihal visits the Chameleon at night and can say two one-liners

The following dialogue does not appear in the final game as there is no persistent content w2phase to make sure Elihal spawns at the Chameleon at night. This was likely a developer oversight.

Elihal: Ehm?

Elihal: You wouldn't hit a woman, would you?

Community: Skellige

Three conversations between three villagers in arinbjorn inn.

Skellige Villager 02: Me youngest was the same - thin as an eel, shy as a lass. Now look at 'im!

Skellige Villager 04: Aye, Svanrige'll grow some stones, yet. Bran's blood will awaken, rise within 'im.

Skellige Villager 04: Just let 'im be crowned, lead his first raid. We'll see it pulse, then.

Skellige Villager 01: So long as Birna lets 'im off her leash.

Skellige Villager 02: Don't ye go talkin' 'bout the konung's widow like that!

[Second conversation; only plays if Svanrige becomes king]

Skellige Villager 02: The best mead! I'll toast a whole barrel for a king like that!

Skellige Villager 01: Tuirseach!

Skellige Villager 01: I told ye Svanrige would show 'em!

Skellige Villager 02: Just like Bran in his youth… To Bran!

Skellige Villager 04: To Bran! Tuirseach!

[Third conversation]

Skellige Villager 04: In days past the gods, not the jarls, chose the king.

Skellige Villager 02: Think the gods would've seen Svanrige's strength?

Skellige Villager 01: I think they know he'll make a good warrior. As he'd 'ave made a good king.

Skellige Villager 04: Svanrige could be king yet. These're uncertain times…

Community: Toussaint

Conversation between merchant and a townswoman in beauclair wine market.

Toussaint Trader 02: At last, a client worthy of the attire I sell.

Beauclair Citizen Woman 02: Why would you say that?

Toussaint Trader 02: My lady… have you not beheld yourself in a glass last? The figure, the waistline. There is not a dress that does not dream of being draped on such a body.

Beauclair Citizen Woman 02: Hm, well then, let's make some dreams come true.

The witcher 3: 5 things that make no sense about geralt (& 5 fan theories that do).

Geralt is the central character in the Witcher series. Some things about him make no sense, while some fan theories seem to be totally clear.

One would find it incredibly hard to talk about some of the greatest video games ever made without mentioning the masterclass in game design that is The Witcher 3 . CD Projekt Red has always been led by some of the most passionate zeal ever shown in a title, and The Witcher 3 stands as a testament of what true love from the developer's part can do to augment the quality of a game. This game is easily CD Projekt Red's magnum opus, and one need only look at the rampant success of The Witcher series — including an excellent Netflix series  — to understand why this is the case.

RELATED:  The Witcher: 10 Most Powerful Magic-Users In The Show, Ranked

It certainly helps that The Witcher 3 is spearheaded by one of the best video game protagonists of all time, Geralt of Rivia . The white-haired Witcher has gone above and beyond when it comes to making this series marketable in every sense of the word. Such is the allure of Geralt that fans have invested countless facets about Geralt that make no sense, along with fashioning theories that are wild yet plausible at the same time. Let's take a look at five examples of each.

MAKES NO SENSE: Geralt Shows Way Too Much Emotion For A Witcher

The mutations that a potential Witcher goes through is meant to provide them with superhuman reflexes and strength at the cost of their humanity. Thus, a lot of Witchers have their emotions number after they go through with this transformation.

However, Geralt seems to be the exception to this norm. He emotes way more than other humans in The Witcher 3 . While that does humanize him in the eyes of the player, it also makes his transformation seem somewhat... pointless.

FAN THEORY: Geralt Wished For Him And Yennefer To Die Together During The Last Wish

The Last Wish is one of the most important stories in The Witcher , introducing the legendary Yennefer for the first time and detailing out an iconic story with a djinn, Dandelion, and a wish unlike any other.

Geralt wishes for him and Yennefer to have their fates tied as one, which can be read into to state that maybe he wished for him and Yennefer to die together . While incredibly sweet, this would be quite a sad moment if it came to pass.

MAKES NO SENSE: Triss Manipulated Him... And Yet He Can Still Fall For Her

While the relationship with Yennefer might be fairly rocky for the most part, it doesn't hold a candle to the manipulation Triss puts Geralt through.

From holding information from him to using his amnesia as a way to get into a relationship with him — Triss has certainly done some truly despicable things over the course of The Witcher series. And yet, for some reason, she's still portrayed as a viable romantic option for Geralt!

FAN THEORY: Geralt Could Potentially Appear In The Cyberpunk Universe

During the moment when Ciri talks about jumping through different dimensions, she talks about a universe where a city was made of metal and machines ruled the world. It doesn't take an expert to guess that she was probably talking about the world of Cyberpunk 2077 .

If Ciri can transport into this dimension, then there's no reason why she can't take Geralt along to enjoy an adventure, unlike anything that could've been imagined in a fan's wildest dreams.

MAKES NO SENSE: He's Way Too Strong And Agile In Combat

In the books, Geralt certainly has better reflexes and strength than the average human. However, he's not a one-man army and can get mowed down with ease if a fighter is too powerful or if the odds are stacked against him.

Meanwhile, in the games , Geralt can take down mobs of enemies with the greatest of ease and mows down waves of monsters like it's no big deal. It's a complete u-turn from the frailties shown in the books, making him look like the most skilled fighter on the Continent by a country mile.

FAN THEORY: Geralt — Like All Witchers — Is Technically A Monster

The mutagens that enable Witchers to attain their powers are obtained from powerful monsters. This, coupled with the fact that the biological composition of a person changes when transforming into a Witcher, points toward a rather troubling fact.

RELATED:  The Witcher: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Geralt's Body

Basically, Geralt and all the other Witchers are technically a hybrid of a monster and a human .

MAKES NO SENSE: Nobody Reminded Him Of Yennefer Or Ciri

During his bout of amnesia, Geralt had to walk through a ton of hoops to finally get his memory back and remember the people who were close to him.

This begs the question — why did nobody remind Geralt of his past in the first place ? Doing so could've saved a ton of time and maybe even prevented The Wild Hunt from realizing Ciri's location in the first place.

FAN THEORY: Ciri Will Replace Geralt In The Witcher 4

Speaking of Ciri, it must be said that The Witcher 3 has a perfect ending where she chooses to become a Witcher and fight alongside Geralt.

If this ending turns out to be true, then it's very much possible that Geralt will take a backseat to Ciri's story in the sequel... if there ever is one, that is.

MAKES NO SENSE: He's Way Too Handsome In The Games

Geralt might not exactly be the epitome of ugliness in the books, but there's no way that anyone would consider him to be anything close to handsome. His skin is pale, his eyes sunken, his face scarred, and his look is more scary than charming.

Meanwhile, Geralt from the games looks like a model of sorts that women all over the continent would swoon over. While it's understandable that they wanted Geralt to be more marketable to the masses, perhaps this was not the way.

FAN THEORY: All The Endings In The Witcher 3 Are Canon

A very interesting fan theory points out the fact that all three endings of The Witcher 3 could be canon , but just occurring at different times.

Basically, after disappearing post her encounter with the White Frost, Geralt believes Ciri to have died. However, Ciri actually took a while to atone upon her past life before returning to Geralt in secret as a Witcher. However, there's no way that a woman tagging along with a Witcher wouldn't reach the ears of the Emperor, and Ciri would have to do the right thing and take over as the Empress of Nilfgaard.

How To Romance Yennefer In The Witcher 3

Quick links, the history of geralt and yennefer's romance, how to romance yennefer, how not to screw it up.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt gives you several romance options for Geralt, but the game's enduring legacy as one of the greatest of all time means questions will be asked regarding how to romance each option for many years to come.

The Witcher 3: Every Quest That Can Auto-Fail And When

It can take a while to start Yennefer's romance quest in The Witcher 3, and most players will likely encounter other women like Keira Metz or Triss Merigold before having a chance to see Geralt shack up with her. In that respect, sticking to one's convictions so that the two can end up together requires a bit more legwork - mentally, at least.

Updated December 29, 2023 by Quinton O'Connor: We have made slight adjustments to this guide for increased clarity. A handful of additional snippets in the text, too. Basically, we've refreshed it. After all, this question keeps springing up!

One of the biggest differences between Yennefer of Vengerberg in The Witcher novels compared to the games is her level of importance. She didn't even feature in the first two games in The Witcher series. Yennefer was mentioned several times in The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, but she did not appear in the flesh until The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt .

In this sense, Triss Merigold is closer to being the true love of Geralt's life in the video game adaptation, as she is a romance option in every entry in the series, while Yennefer arrives late to the party.

Yennefer does, of course, play a huge part in the novels which all take place prior to the events of The Witcher's trilogy of games.

In order to romance Yennefer, you need to make the right decisions in specific key moments of the game.

Beginning The Romance On Skellige

The first moment occurs in the main story quest called "The King is Dead - Long Live the King," which is the one where Geralt joins Yennefer on Skellige. When prompted to choose an outfit , you need to select the black and white one.

During the quest, Geralt and Yennefer will slay an earth elemental , causing poison gas to fill up the room. When prompted for a choice, choose to kiss Yennefer, and she will teleport the two of them away. Yennefer will need to repair her dress , so ask to watch when she does, prompting the first romance scene between the two.

Confessing Feelings During The Last Wish

Later in the Skellige section of the game, Yennefer will ask to meet Geralt in Larvik, which serves as the beginning of "The Last Wish."

You must complete this quest before "Ugly Baby," or it will auto-fail, and Geralt won't end up with the raven-haired sorceress.

During "The Last Wish," Yen and Geralt force a Djinn to remove the spell that's binding the two lovers together. Afterward, the sorceress reveals that her feelings for Geralt remain the same despite the lack of magical influence. You need to respond with "I still love you, too," to continue the relationship.

Confirming Things At Kaer Morhen

If you choose to romance Yennefer prior to the "No Place Like Home" quest , you will get a chance to spend some more time together at Kaer Morhen . During dinner, Yennefer will ask to speak to Geralt in private . If Geralt agrees to go to her room, then another romance scene will occur and the two will be confirmed.

The Witcher 3: How To Get The Best Ending

It's possible for Geralt to live the rest of his life with Yennefer in the ending of The Witcher 3, so long as he avoids cheating on her with Triss .

You can romance the red-headed sorceress in the "A Matter of Life of Death" and "Now or Never" quests, and the game does nothing to hint that this might be a bad idea if you have already pledged yourself to Yennefer .

If you do try to romance Yennefer and Triss at the same time, then they both try to seduce Geralt at once - but it's just a ploy to tie him to a bed and leave him to be found by Dandelion. Geralt won't end up with either woman if you attempt to be greedy.
