Manithan movie review: Steers away from double meaning dialogues in name of comedy
Director : Ahmed
Cast: Udhayanidhi Stalin, Hansika, Prakash Raj, Radha Ravi, Aishwarya
The producer turned hero Udhayanidhi Stalin who was hitherto seen in lighthearted rom-coms has come out of his comfort zone and attempted at a serious film with Manithan which is an adaptation of Bollywood hit Jolly LLB. Director Ahmed has tweaked it interestingly extending the romance portion and adding a new character to suit the nativity.
Shakthi (Udhayanidhi), is an unsuccessful lawyer from Pollachi who becomes a laughing stock among his relatives, except his ‘morai ponnu’ Priya (Hansika), a school teacher who believes that he would win one day. Unable to bear insults any more, Shakthi moves to Chennai chasing his dreams of making it big taking the help of his uncle (Vivekh) who is also a failed lawyer in the High Court. With his naïve approach, nothing seemed to work and a stage comes when decides to go back to Pollachi, fate has something else in store for him. He gets entangled with a high profile hit-and-run case where he locks horns with a much-powerful and influential lawyer Adhiseshan (Prakash Raj). How he emerges out triumphantly forms the rest of story narrated in an attention-grabbing manner.
Udhay has improved leaps and bounds and delivers a neat performance. He has in fact made sure to let the story and other crucial characters to take the center-stage fitting himself into the narration. Also, despite the film’s producer, he has not indulged in cinematic liberties like romantic song routines etc. Hansika once again proves that given a meaty role, she will simply floor you. With subtle makeup and right expressions she scores. A role like this is a cakewalk for Prakash Raj. Though a bit loud, with his impeccable dialogue delivery and body language he perfectly fits the character of a suave and eminent lawyer. Radha Ravi as the tired judge pulls it off with consumable ease. Vivekh as usual tries his antics in vain. Asihwarya Rajesh is adequate as the investigative journalist. Ahmed definitely deserves a pat for giving a clean film with a message and steer clearing away from clichéd kuthu numbers and double meaning dialogues in the name of comedy. Madhie’s camera elevates the proceedings. Santhosh Narayanan tunes looks repetitive but BGM warrants mention. Ajayan Bala’s dialogues are sharp. An honest attempt and a feel good film that is worth a watch!

MANITHAN MOVIE REVIEW
Have you ever wondered if a criminal lawyer is a bigger culprit than the criminal himself in few cases? Our judicial system gives even the accused an opportunity to save himself as it insists that any number of guilty can go scot-free but not one innocent should be punished. Keeping this in mind, Indian film Industry has seen many courtroom dramas. Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Manithan directed by I Ahmed is an official adaptation of the Hindi film Jolly LLB which also falls into this interesting genre; the genre is so interesting that this choice advances the film towards the victory stand.
Udhayanidhi Stalin makes sure that he gets noticed as a performer than as a hero with this film which has a very neatly written character sketch for him. Unlike his previous ventures, one gets to see Udhayanidhi gracefully letting the story and the other important roles take the front seat. Hansika is definitely sending out signals to emphasize that she can be used much more effectively than just for some song and romance routines. Her character Priya, appears whenever needed and stays in the right space.
Prakash Raj playing the very important role of Adisheshan completes the race with ease. This character is not new for him. The power in his voice and the strength in his modulation and intonation can make one perceive this film just with the audio alone. Such is the impact of his voice! Radha Ravi on the other hand proves his caliber yet again by taking advantage of the underlined humour that his character carries along. It definitely makes the viewer to wish to see him more often in roles like this. Vivek as Udhayanidhi’s uncle/sidekick, does what he can do even with his eyes closed. As a true cinema patron and as an admirer, one wishes that Vivek starts to get good character roles to play which will throw some light on the performer Vivek.
R Madhi’s camera has made sure to capture every necessary detail in an appealing manner while J. V. Manikanda Balaji could have helped the transition from one scene to another a smoother one. Few insert shots that could have given a little more clarity seem to have got chopped at the edit table unfortunately.
Santhosh Narayanan's music takes a step forward when experienced along with the tale. But one wonders if his songs are resonating the specific emotion of love, pain, struggle more than what the character or the visuals are trying to communicate. This film is one example where the song and BGM take over the performances at times.
As it is an official adaptation of the Hindi flick, Jolly LLB, nativity and other linguistic aspects have been tweaked well to suit our audience. It is called ”adaptation” for a reason. It is not a remake! Appreciation to the director and writer Ajayan Bala for the same.
Climax dialogues, especially long ones loaded with sentiment are a sure winner with audience. You will spot a similar closure in this drama. In case of Manithan, if that dialogue had been coupled with convincing judicial aspects, the output could have been even impacfful. Nevertheless, overall an enjoyable fare!

Manithan Movie Review
Kollywood’s actor cum producer Udhayanidhi Stalin’s recent release is ‘Manithan’ and the movie was directed and written by I.Ahmed and Udhayanidhi Stalin has himself produced the movie on behalf of Red Giant Movies Production banner. The story was written by Subhash Kapoor, which was based on the movie Jolly LLB. The movie features Udhayanidhi, Hansika Motwani and Prakash Raj in predominant roles.
Santosh Narayan has composed the music for Manithan . He has given a good background scores but there are some unwanted songs in the second part of the story. The movie’s is like Bollywood’s Jolly LLB and the difference between both the movies is the way it is presented and promoted. In the second half the movie goes very seriously with complete court drama.
The movie is based on the real life incident which has happened during 1999, where a son of millionaire in drunken state of mind kills six innocent people and the case was handled by the powerful man Prakash Raj in the defense side and Udhayanidhi suppose to enter the court and tries to fight for justice. But during the last 15 minutes of the court scene Udhayanidhi makes a spectacular performance.
Hansika Motwani has not that much to perform and she has done justice to her roles. In the movie Radharavi and Prakash Raj are the showstoppers. Prakash Raj’s performance was tremendous and his gesture was extra ordinary. Vivek has acted and his acting is sure to get a big round of applause for his stylish posing.
Madhi has made the excellent cinematography and the Chennai location was beautifully picturized. This movie will be definitely liked by the audience as few scenes and court scenes are perfectly made by the director.
Overall, the movie is not good as remake, but it has its own emotions!

Manithan review: Stalin, Prakash Raj film doesn’t match up to Jolly LLB
I ahmed tries to recreate the riveting roles of arshad warsi, boman irani and saurabh shukla through udhayanidhi stalin, prakash raj and radharavi respectively in his latest tamil outing, manithan but fails badly..
Director : I Ahmed
Cast : Udhayanidhi Stalin, Prakash Raj, Radharavi, Vivek, Hansika Motwani, Aishwarya Rajesh
Rating : 2/5
Films like Chak de India and Paan Singh Tomar excelled largely because they did not steer away from their core themes. The first about hockey, and the second about a disillusioned steeplechase runner-turned-rebel engaged me with their neatly crafted scripts and some fine pieces of performance. Subhash Kapoor’s 2013 Jolly LLB was as gripping with Arshad Warsi playing a bumbling young lawyer, Boman Irani a seasoned and celebrated advocate and Saurabh Shukla a sardonic judge.
For I Ahmed (Endrendrum Punnagai), it could not have been easy to recreate the riveting roles of Warsi, Irani and Shukla through Udhayanidhi Stalin, Prakash Raj and Radharavi respectively in his latest Tamil outing and a remake of Jolly LLB, titled Manithan.
Watch Manithan trailer here:
To begin with, Ahmed’s movie is 25 minutes longer than Jolly LLB, and the director uses this time to incorporate what to me seemed like a romantic preamble to the courtroom drama played out by Stalin’s Shakti and Hansika Motwani’ Priya amidst the rural landscape of Pollachi in Tamil Nadu. Ahmed also introduces a new character, a television anchor, portrayed with admirable elan by Aishwarya Rajesh who captivated us as the impoverished mother of the two boys in Kaaka Muttai.

Shakti travels to Chennai, where the novice lawyer hopes to make a mark for himself. His first meeting with the much-feared, the much corrupt, but highly successful advocate, Prakash Raj’s brilliantly acted out Adiseshan, is one of awe. But when the young man in his desperation to earn a living, files a public interest litigation in a hit-and-run road accident case that has been argued by Adiseshan and closed, sparks begin to fly.

While Prakash Raj outshines Irani in the Hindi version with his extraordinarily power-packed dialogue delivery, which greatly enlivens the dramatic events in court, Stalin is no match for Warsi, whose bumbling, dream-driven guy in a black jacket was such a pleasure to watch. And, Radharavi too pales in comparison to Shukla, whose characterisation of a bored judge was so nuanced with hitherto unseen mannerisms that I was floored.
