One Thing My Parents Did Right: Giving Gifts

I knew the American Girl doll sitting in the hotel bathroom was meant for me, yet I refused to acknowledge its presence. Only a few months had passed since I moved into this new family. Yes, my adoptive parents had proven to be kinder than any family I’d ever known, but how could I be sure they’d treat me differently than my previous parents had? Were they like other families who dangled the possibility of a gift just out of reach to induce good behavior? Would simple missteps result in the permanent removal of objects I came to cherish?

My 8-year-old dream of having this doll was sitting before me, but I couldn’t allow myself the pleasure of accepting such a gift. It would only lead to disappointment. Whatever standard I had to meet to earn this doll, I knew I could never achieve it. With one last glance, I walked away, refusing to accept what I knew had been a well-orchestrated surprise.

Over time, I came to accept my adoptive parents’ gifts with gratitude rather than fear. As I came to understand that their love—like their gifts—was unconditional, I learned to receive both gifts and discipline as evidence of God’s grace.

Receiving Grace

It became clear I didn’t receive gifts in my adoptive family by my attempts to be a good child; I received gifts simply by being their child. This approach to gift giving enabled me to understand God’s grace and the gifts he freely extends to his children.

As children of God, we can’t attain God’s gifts through our performance, because his gifts are motivated by grace that flows from his fatherly heart. As Paul explains, “If it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace” (Rom. 11:6).

I received gifts simply by being their child.

In the same way that my parents extend gifts to me out of love, our heavenly Father grants us blessings on the basis of our status as his children: “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matt. 7:11). We receive these pleasant gifts with gratitude, knowing they’re an overflow of grace.

Receiving Discipline

But there are other gifts God gives that don’t seem pleasant in the moment. One of these is discipline.

My experience of discipline in previous families had been devoid of love, so I struggled to see discipline as anything positive. The excessive and intense use of corporal punishment was closer to abuse than to godly correction. It took years of healing, but eventually, the grace and intentionality in my adoptive parents’ discipline enabled me to see healthy discipline as a gift.

That’s what the author of Hebrews seems to have been getting at when he said,

We have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. (Heb. 12:9–11)

Loving and grace-filled correction given by our earthly parents displays the grace and sovereignty of God’s discipline. The difficulties in our lives are acts of grace through which the Lord captures our attention and calls us back to himself. We can receive this gift of discipline with gratitude and endurance when we remember our Lord’s discipline is always motivated and granted with perfect grace.

Receiving the Gift

Assuming I’d merely overlooked the doll, my mother steered me back into the bathroom and turned me toward the doll as she braided my hair. I waited until she was finished and left the bathroom again, still refusing to acknowledge what I’d seen. Clearly perplexed, my parents asked me if I’d noticed anything. I shook my head. Finally, both of my parents led me into the bathroom one last time and placed the doll in my arms.

The grace and intentionality in my adoptive parents’ discipline enabled me to see healthy discipline as a gift.

The concern reflected in their expressions revealed the genuineness of the gift. It was clear this doll wasn’t given as an incentive for good behavior; it was given simply because my adoptive parents loved me as their own. I could only cry as I experienced the joy of receiving a gift—a real gift—for the first time.

Through my parents’ unconditional love, I developed the capacity to see their gifts were freely given for my good. More than creating a bond of trust between my parents and me, this new pattern of gift giving helped me understand the grace hidden within the varying gifts of my heavenly Father.

Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth” (Matt 5:13). A Christian mother isn’t necessarily better than other mothers; but rather she has special seasoning due to the presence of the Holy Spirit. The believing mother has a wealth of resources available to train, discipline , and love her children in the grace of God.

The following 12 qualities are just a tip of the virtues provided by God through Jesus Christ to equip and encourage mothers:

Quality #1) Possesses a Keen Sense of Discernment

“ The discerning heart seeks knowledge” (Proverbs 15:14).

A good Christian mother stays intimately connected with God so that she will keep a discerning heart. She’s willing to grow in knowledge through the reading of God’s word and absorbing truth from mature godly mothers. God grants her discernment in the lives of her children so that they may be specifically well-trained in righteousness.

Quality #2) Persists in Prayer at all Times

“… they should always pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1).

A believing mom never gives up on her children especially her prodigal(s). People will write off a difficult, rebellious child—but not a praying mother. She will plead the grace and mercy of God over their lives as long as there’s breath in her body. This mother is compelled and encouraged by the Holy Spirit to keeping praying no matter what.

Quality #3) Demonstrates Unconditional Love

“ There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18).

A mother who loves God with all her heart isn’t afraid to unconditionally love her children. She recognizes that her patience will be tried by disobedience, but it will never cause her love to regress in anger. Her love spurs confidence in her offspring since they never worry about loss of love due to bad behavior.

Quality #4) Cultivates a Joyful Environment

“ In Your presence is fullness of joy” (Psalm 16:11, NKJV).

Those who enter into the home of a godly mother sense the presence of joy. Her deep rooted joy sustains her through the difficulties of living in an ungodly world. She has mastered the ability to encourage her children toward joy in every situation.

Quality #5) Exhibits Steadfastness in the Word of God

“ All who follow His precepts have good understanding” (Psalm 111:10).

She meditates on the Holy Scriptures regularly …

The Christian mother actively engages the Word of God for every problem in the home. She meditates on the Holy Scriptures regularly as well as speaking and teaching them to her children. “ But godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6).

A godly mother resists the urge be discontented with her surroundings, children, or husband. She recognizes that the chasing of worldliness and riches will never bring her peace. Instead she trusts in the Lord to provide all her needs and grant her desires according to His will .

Quality #8) Trusts in God

“ Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord , have never forsaken those who seek you” (Psalm 9:10).

Her trust in God is most evident during the difficult seasons of her life. The Christian mother is tempted like other believers to doubt the Lord’s hand over her life; yet she remains steadfast in His ability to take care of her and her family’s needs. She establishes a trust relationship with God that grows every day.

Quality #9) Keeps the Faith

“ A faithful person will be richly blessed” (Proverbs 28:20).

Her faith will most certainly be tested in her roles of wife and mother. A godly mother will accept the trying of her faith so she can grow in perseverance. She demonstrates her faithfulness as she continues to mature in her relationship with God and others.

Quality #10) Brings Order to Chaos

“ She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness” (Proverbs 31:27).

The Christian mother is marked for her diligence and resistance to laziness or slothfulness. Her chief concern isn’t the perfect home, but rather a healthy home full of love, laughter, and order. She keeps her home free not only from physical clutter but watches for the spiritual and emotional clutter of worldliness.

Quality #11) Holds to what is Right

“ The righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father” (Matthew 13:43).

As a godly mother she makes the tough decisions that run against the torrent of societal corruption of children and youth. She sticks to what is right in the eyes of God for her children’s spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. A Christian mother expects resistance and refuses to comprise righteousness for acceptance.

Quality #12) Willing to Release her Children to God

While the Christian mother holds her children tightly around her heart, she releases them to grow in Christ at their own pace. She’s entrusted her prayers to God to protect and lead them in the direction of His will. Her influence and persuasion centers around the Lord’s will more than her personal preference for their future.

There is no such thing as the perfect mother, but the Christian mother continues to be perfected by the grace of God. She is invaluable to the kingdom of Christ due to her influence on the next generation. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, every godly mother is flavorful blessing to her children and children’s children.

The title "mother" comes with so much meaning. It's used worldwide to describe women who have co-created life and walk alongside their children to shepherd their hearts. Mother implies connection; it speaks of biology and describes those of us who have mothered through adoption and more. Being a mother to someone means having an irreplaceable role in another person's life. Biological mothers, first mothers, foster moms, step-moms, adoptive moms - we all matter more than anything to the children we are entrusted with to care for. Mothering is a special gift, a huge responsibility, and something God ordained from the start of human history. We were told to be fruitful and multiply. We were to be the vehicle that God uses to grow humanity.

Mothering does not come without trials, worries, struggles, and failures. It's not an easy job to find the best way to love a unique, fearfully, and wonderfully made person, let alone several of them! To do this job, we have to give away our whole hearts to a person whose fate we can't control. Mothers lay down their bodies, give up their sleep, cry many tears, pray so many prayers, and hope daily that God writes a good story for our kids. Sometimes we hope this despite our own failings. We all have to let go when we are afraid. We must encourage when we don't know what the future holds. We have to tame our tempers and learn to live what we want them to be.

In a world that wants to diminish the value of mothering, that wants to divide us between those that do it "right" and "wrong," and that fails to honor our so many sacrifices, we must take the time to remind our own mothers why they are such a gift to us. Even in our imperfection, we have given something to make our lives possible. We all have a mother and need her to be one.

Here are some ways we can honor our mothers for the gift that they are:

1. She Is a Life Co-Creator

Mothering comes in many different shapes and sizes. I have children I have carried in my own womb and had the honor of them grabbing their first breaths of life. I have children I have fostered for a time, loved them dearly, and let them go back to the homes they were made to be in. I also have children through adoption. Mothering is not a one-size-fits-all job. No matter how you come to this role, you are vital to nurturing a life. Your role is to encourage and correct as your children grow into the people they have been created to become. Your gift to them is sometimes genes, and sometimes it's being a safe place to grow past the losses that brought you into a particular home. Either way, you are a gift because you are a life-giver.

2. She Is a Teacher

We come into their world needing to learn so much. Our voices teach our kids comfort and language. When they hold and hug, our hands teach our brains how to be calm. Our routines tell our kids what comes next. Our rules show them the best ways to live in this created world. Our presence teaches them that they are loved and valued.

Mothers are the great teachers in our homes. No matter how your kids receive their "education," most of what they see as valuable comes from you. They watch you move about the world and learn from your actions. Every day is a new chance to show and tell your children about the good and beautiful things that exist on this Earth.

3. She Is a Giver

Mother's give. At the start, we give birth. If we can't raise our children, then we have to go through the painful choice of giving them to another to nurture and raise them on our behalf. We give up our sleep, our figures, our time, our money, our talents, our worries, our prayers, our hearts, our hopes, and our dreams. We give our whole selves to the mother's job, almost in an instant. It's a miracle, really!

Each of these gifts mothers give matter to our lives. When we give comfort, we teach compassion and care. When we give advice, we teach wisdom and knowledge. When we give up our bodies, we give life to the world. It all comes at a cost to us, yet we count it as joy to give so freely to these humans we love so profoundly.

4. She Is a Lover

The moment you meet your children, your heart grows in such a tagine way. Our lives are turned upside down when we find out that it's no longer just our story we are living, but another human relies on us for everything. A human we love with a fierce, wild, and all-consuming kind of love. That love drives all we do. Even when we don't do it right, we are doing what we think our love requires.

That love sets the stage for our children's lives. It's something they long for, draw on, and pass on when they become mothers and fathers. It teaches them about their loving creator. It grounds us when the world feels wild and rocky. We need our mother's love; she gives it as if it were breath itself. She must because she is a lover.

5. She Is Essential

Each of us needs our mothers. We need their encouragement, comfort, and care. When we are sick, we all want to be with our Moms. Something about who they are brings comfort to our souls. They are a part of us. Even the most imperfect mothers still matter to who we are. We look to our Mom's story to inform us of who we are and who we should strive to become. Moms are essential.

This Mother's Day reminds the women who have helped you know that they are a blessing. Their work is not without impact. Their gifts have not been received without gratitude. Affirm that God has made her to be yours. That they can never be replaced. They are a blessing. Mothering is a good gift from God.

Yes we are, because nowadays some of us are hardly respecting this unique and pure relationship. However, it is very essential to follow these values in our lives.

Nowadays we hear many instances about mothers abandoning their children for the sake of money or for their personal benefits and there are some children who leave their parents in old age homes. These have become common in our day-to-day lives.

Her positive attitude and skills have broadened my strength to stay calm during challenging times. I aspire to be like her and inculcate all her qualities.

A mother is like Mother Nature who always gives unconditionally without any expectations in return. It is not easy to be a living inspiration for someone and to do so requires a life full of positivity, wisdom, conviction and enthusiasm. Mother is not simply a word; it is a whole universe in itself. She is indeed the most important person in everybody's life.

Mother - A Companion of Trouble

My Mother has been a persistent source of inspiration, staying with me through life's ups and downs. Whenever I was in difficulty or was reprimanded by my father, I ran to my mother since she was the only one who could save me. She was always there for me, whether it was a minor homework difficulty or a bigger problem. When I was scared of the dark, she would become my light, guiding me through it. She often spends sleepless nights caring for me when I'm unwell or having a rough day. She would also hold my head on her lap till I fell asleep if I couldn't sleep at night. Above all, even at the darkest of moments, she never leaves my side. My Mother is a teacher, a superhero, and my best friend all rolled into one. She is the foundation of my education and has assisted me in honing my talents and abilities.

Every mother is unique in the eyes of her children. She is an excellent teacher, a wonderful friend, and a strict parent. She also looks after the needs of the entire household. There is only one person who loves us more than our mother, and that is God. Not only for my mother but for every woman who dedicates her life to her family, deserves a standing ovation.

Mother’s Day History

Julia Ward Howe was a well-known reformer and poet. She enlisted with the United States Clean Commission during the Civil War, assisting them in providing hygiene settings for hospitals and ensuring sanitary conditions throughout the care of sick and injured soldiers. Julia Ward Howe proposed a "Mother's Day for Peace" in 1870, which would be dedicated to the celebration of peace and the abolition of war. Howe believed that mothers should join to avert the horrors of war and the loss of life, as reflected in her 1870 "Mother's Day Proclamation," because mothers of mankind bear and feel the cost alone. Nothing new happened in this section until 1907 when it was taken over by Miss Anna M. Jarvis of Philadelphia.

Mother's Day was first observed in the United States in 1908 when a woman named Anna Jarvis wanted to mark Mother's Day as a recognised holiday to honour her mother, Ann Reese Jarvis, a peace campaigner who had died three years before. Anna had a monument for her mother built at West Virginia's St. Andrews Methodist Church, which is today known as the International Mother's Day Shrine. Anna Jarvis wanted to pay tribute to her mother because she thought that a mother is "the person who has done more for you than anybody else in the world."

Motherhood is God's Special Gift

MOTHERHOOD IS GOD'S SPECIAL GIFT

1. Motherhood is a gift of God. "I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord!" (Gn 4:1), Eve exclaims after giving birth to Cain, her first-born son. With these words, the Book of Genesis presents the first motherhood in human history as a grace and joy that spring from the Creator's goodness.

2. The birth of Isaac is similarly described, at the origin of the chosen people. God promises Abraham, who has been deprived of children and is now advanced in years, descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven (cf. Gn 15:5). The promise is welcomed by the patriarch with the faith that reveals God's plan to this man: "He believed the Lord; and he reckoned it to him as righteousness" (Gn 15:6).

This promise was confirmed in the words spoken by the Lord on the occasion of the covenant he made with Abraham: "Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations" (Gn 17:4).

Extraordinary and mysterious events emphasize how Sarah's motherhood was primarily the fruit of the mercy of God, who gives life beyond all human expectation: "I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her; I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her" (Gn 17:15-16).

Motherhood is presented as a decisive gift of the Lord. The patriarch and his wife will be given a new name to indicate the unexpected and marvellous transformation that God is to work in their life.

The visit of the three mysterious persons, whom the Fathers of the Church interpreted as a pre-figuration of the Trinity, announced the fulfilment of the promise to Abraham more explicitly: "The Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men stood in front of him" (Gn 18:1-2). Abraham objected: "Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?" (Gn 17:17; cf. 18:1113). The divine guest replies: "Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son" (Gn 18:14, cf. Lk 1:37).

The narrative stresses the effect of the divine visit, which makes fruitful a conjugal union that had been barren until then. Believing in the promise, Abraham becomes a father against all hope, and "father in the faith" because from his faith "descends" that of the chosen people.

4. The Bible relates other stories of women released from sterility and gladdened by the Lord with the gift of motherhood. These are often situations of anguish, which God's intervention transforms into experiences of joy by receiving the heartfelt prayers of those who are humanly without hope. "When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children", for example, "she envied her sister and she said to Jacob, 'Give me children, or I shall die!'. Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, 'Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?'" (Gn 30:1-2).

But the biblical text immediately adds: "Then God remembered Rachel and God hearkened to her and opened her womb. She conceived and bore a son" (Gn 30:22-23). This son, Joseph would play a very important role for Israel at the time of the migration to Egypt.

In this as in other narratives, the Bible intends to highlight the marvellous nature of God's intervention in these specific cases by stressing the initial condition of the woman's sterility; however, at the same time, it allows us to grasp the gratuitousness inherent in all motherhood.

5. We find a similar process in the account of the birth of Samson. The wife of Manoah, who had never been able to conceive a child, hears the Lord's announcement from the angel: "Behold, you are barren and have no children; but you shall conceive and bear a son" (Jgs 13:3). The conception, unexpected and miraculous, announces the great things that the Lord will do through Samson.

In the case of Hannah, Samson's mother, the special role of prayer is underlined. Hannah suffers the humiliation of being barren but she is full of great trust in God to whom she turns insistently, that Le may help her to overcome this trial. One day, at the temple she makes a vow: "Oh Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your maidservant, and remember me, and not forget your maidservant, but will give to your maidservant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life" (1 Sm 1:11).

Her prayer was answered: "The Lord remembered her" and "Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel" (1 Sm 1:19-20). Keeping her promise, Hannah offered her son to the Lord: "For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord as long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord" (1 Sm 1: 27-28). Given by God to Hannah and then given by Hannah to God, the little Samuel becomes a living bond of communion between Hannah and God.

Samuel's birth is thus an experience of joy and an occasion for thanksgiving. The First Book of Samuel contains a hymn known as Hannah's Magnificat, which seems to anticipate Mary's: "My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in the Lord" (1 Sm 2:1).

The grace of motherhood that God granted to Hannah because of her ceaseless prayers filled her with a new generosity. Samuel's consecration is the grateful response of a mother who, recognizing in her child the fruit of God's mercy, returns his gift, entrusting the child she had so longed for to the Lord.

God intervenes in important moments

6. In the accounts of miraculous motherhood which we have recalled, it is easy to discover the important place the Bible assigns to mothers in the mission of their sons. In Samuel's case Hannah has a determining role in deciding to give him to the Lord. An equally decisive role is played by another mother, Rebecca, who procures the inheritance for Jacob (Gn 27). That maternal intervention, described by the Bible, can be interpreted as the sign of being chosen as an instrument in God's sovereign plan. It is he who chooses the youngest son, Jacob, to receive the paternal blessing and inheritance, and therefore as the shepherd and leader of his people.... It is he who by a free and wise decision determines and governs each one's destiny (Wis 10:10-12).

The Bible's message regarding motherhood reveals important and ever timely aspects: indeed, it sheds light on the dimension of gratuitousness, which is especially apparent in the case of barren women, God's particular covenant with woman and the special bond between the destiny of the mother and that of the son.

At the same time, the intervention of God, who, at important moments in the history of his people, causes certain barren women to conceive, prepares for belief in the intervention of God who, in the fullness of time, will make a Virgin fruitful for the Incarnation of his Son.

Mother's Day is this Sunday. While some people are racking their brains to think of the perfect way to show their love and appreciation for Mom, a group of distinguished women recently flipped that script and wrote about the most profound gift their own moms gave to them. Their essays are collected in the new book What My Mother Gave Me: Thirty-One Women on the Gifts That Mattered Most.

The book springs out of editor Elizabeth Benedict's personal experience. The last gift she received from her mother was a black wool scarf, embroidered at each end with yellow, pink and blue flowers. "She bought it at the assisted-living facility where she lived. And as soon as I began wearing it, people started commenting on how beautiful it was," Benedict tells Tell Me More host Michel Martin. "And after she died, I wore it all the time in the winter. And I was literally confused by how I could feel this attachment to the scarf and having felt so much distance from my mother."

Benedict went on to wonder about the experiences of other women, such as activist and MacArthur "Genius" Cecilia Muñoz. "I lost my mom about five years ago, and it felt like a wonderful opportunity not just to pay tribute to her, but also to reflect on what she gave to me, what she gave to us," says Muñoz. "In my case, I come from one of those big sprawling immigrant families and my mother was very much at the center of it."

Muñoz is the daughter of Bolivian immigrants. Her parents married in 1950, and they planned to stay in the United States for just one year so her father could finish his engineering education. But when they decided to return home, their families told them to wait because of a poor economy and political situation.

Muñoz received a wok from her mother, whose relationships with everyone in the family largely related to food. She was a homemaker and accomplished chef. She even sold cosmetics. "It's funny because we didn't see her as a working woman at the time because this is like one of those companies where you do makeup parties, essentially. ... She was terrific at it, but she designed it so she could also be there to take me to music lessons and take my brothers to debate practice, and you know, be a traditional mom in the same way she managed to do all of that," Muñoz says.

Now that the activist is juggling an intense job and kids of her own, she understands why her mother was washing the kitchen floor at 11 p.m. or doing laundry at 6 a.m. Muñoz does the same thing, she says.

The book includes many other diverse voices, like television host and minister Lillian Daniel, former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove, Slate 's Supreme Court reporter Dahlia Lithwick, best-selling novelist Lisa See, and even NPR founding mother Susan Stamberg. Benedict says she wanted a real range of experiences so the book would feel like the actual world we live in.

"I started with the idea that I wanted people to write about an object. And if I had said to all these people, 'Write me a story about your mother,' I think I wouldn't have gotten anything because people would've freaked out," Benedict says. "But I think being able to focus on one object and tell the sort of beginning and middle and end of that object and how it radiates and reverberates really allows people to get to the core of the relationship."

The objects are not diamond rings, fancy cars or houses. They're modest: a photograph, quilt, cake pan, plant, bottle of nail polish, even a cracked vase. "These are not gifts that have a lot of financial value, but the value of the gifts accrues over time," Benedict says. "The value comes from the relationships themselves, and how people process the relationships, and how people move through their lives with their mothers in life and in memory."

My mother is one of the most important people in my life. She is always there for me, and teaches all the things I need to be a well-rounded woman. Words can not even come close to describe what she means to me, or how much I love her. I love remembering the little things she has done like singing "you are my sunshine" every night before bed, eating the tomatoes that I refuse to, and making me soup when I am sick. These are five things that I want to thank my mother for that I normally do not.

1. Being the best friend that I always needed

She has always been there for me, and always been a listening ear. No matter the issues I had she was always there to listen and give helpful advice.

2. Showed me what it meant to be a strong woman

She was never the emotional mother that you see on Tv, and I am grateful for that. She taught me what it meant to be strong. She showed me how to keep my head held high through every situation. She always got right back up after falling down, but she was stronger the second time around. She taught me the phrase "no crying unless you are dying". She taught me to never be afraid to stand your ground and state your opinion.

3. How to be God fearing

From day one I was in church and praying. Praying every day was something you did to communicate with God. She taught me what it means to study the bible, and read the word for yourself. She taught me to have my own relationship with God and to open my heart up to him.

4. It's okay to be a little domestic

I remember doing my own laundry as young as nine years old. She taught me from an early age that learning to cook was a good thing. Even though I may not have the best cleaning habits, that does not mean I don't know how to. Cooking and cleaning for a future husband is nothing to be ashamed about. You need to know how to take care of yourself, and your family.

5. How to "adult"

Being in college I recognize so many adults my age do not know the responsibilities it takes to make it today in this world. I thank her for teaching the important things like paying bills, buying a car, taxes and saving money. Keeping budget was my most recent lesson, and I am grateful for it. She always taught me that I need to be independent, and to know how to properly "adult".

Mothers are a gift from God that do not always get to stay as long as you may like them too. I am thanking my mother to show her that I do notice the things she has done for me. She had influenced me in such positive ways. I would not be the woman I am today without her.

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble.

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Mother is the second form of God and as it rightly said that “God could not be everywhere, therefore he made mother” . She is only one who works round the clock without any complaint. She is backbone of every family and she always takes care of each and sundry members in the family. She always eats at last, however, her works start before anyone in the family wakes up and ends when her family sleeps. Sometimes she scolds her child but only for child’s better future.

Moreover she always tries her level best to make her child reach at the peak and for his/her success, she does this not for her self-interest but for her child’s future. She is only one who loves her child the most. She does not want anything in lieu of it. She always takes cares of his family members, and sometime when she gets ill she ignores her health and works as she is perfectly fine. Mother is one who reduces all the burden of her family members and she is one who always supports his/her child in every situation.
