Introduction of the Programme by Pietro Reichlin , PhD Coordinator

The PhD in Economics at Luiss

The PhD in Economics at Luiss Guido Carli is a  four-year program  providing advanced education in all the main areas of economics. The program is fully funded and provides all students a scholarship for four years. It requires full-time attendance and is taught in English.

Our program is designed to give students the ability to understand and solve  a broad spectrum of economic problems  and to impart training in cutting-edge analytical, empirical, and quantitative techniques. Students acquire the necessary skills to undertake both academic and professional careers, in universities, international research institutions, public authorities, central banks, consulting and financial institutions.

In the first and second year, students follow advanced topic courses covering quantitative methods (mathematics and statistics), computer programming and all the main areas in Economics: Applied Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics and Finance. The third and fourth years are devoted to writing the doctoral dissertation. Reading groups, workshops and seminars are also part of the learning activities. See here for further informations.

The program is coordinated by  Prof. Pietro Reichlin  and governed by the  Academic board  bringing together an international group of scholars,  among members of the department as well as professors from other institutions. The PhD Coordinator and the Academic Board are supported by the program’s  PhD tutor  and the colleagues in the University’s  PhD office .

Luiss has reached an agreement with the Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance ( EIEF ) and the Department of Economics and Finance of Tor Vergata for a joint study program. Hence, all students have access to a rich and diversified portfolio of courses and seminars.

Every year, three students, among those admitted to the Luiss PhD, are selected to be part of the Rome Economics Doctorate (RED) , a joint program and degree co-organized by EIEF, Luiss and Tor Vergata. Although all the courses offered within the RED are accessible to all PhD students at Luiss, the RED students have a privileged access to the EIEF facilities and are subject to some extra restrictions related to their study program. Any information about the RED program can be found in the dedicated webpage.

The Handbook of the PhD in Economics for the Academic Year 2021/2022 can be found here .

Annual PhD Conference

At the beginning of the Fall Semester (beginning of September) of every academic year, the partner programs (Luiss, Tor Vergata and RED) jointly organize a one-day conference where the PhD students of the three institutions have the opportunity to present their work (typically a draft paper from the dissertation) in front of their peer and the academic staff. The first edition of the Annual PhD Economics and Finance Conference took place September 9, 2022 at Luiss. The next edition will be hosted by Tor Vergata in September 2023.

PhD program in Economics

The institution.

The University of Pavia, founded in 1361, is one of the world’s oldest academic institutions. Today almost 24,000 students, from both Italy and overseas, study at our University. Pavia, as a city-campus, offers students a unique experience in Italy and rare in Europe: to stay at one of 20 University colleges. Pavia is a city in northern Italy with 70,000 inhabitants located 30 km south of Milan, connected by regional and suburban trains every 10 minutes. Life in Pavia is both pleasant and affordable, particularly in comparison with much higher housing and living costs in Milan and other urban centres in Lombardy. Pavia’s campus offers a unique university experience to students who can enjoy countless events, festivals, exhibitions, concerts and sport activities, at all levels.

The program

The PhD in Economics is a three-year program of the Universities of Milan and Pavia. The PhD degree is awarded after completion of coursework and defense of an original thesis.

Research is at the core of the PhD Program in Economics and benefits from a very active and committed research community of 18 students and more than 40 Faculty members mainly from the Department of Economics, Management and Quantitative Methods (DEMM) of the University of Milan and the Department of Economics and Management of the University of Pavia. The program aims at training outstanding scholars for professional careers in Universities, Government, or research departments of private and public institutions. To this purpose, we provide training and supervision to doctoral students who want to develop research projects that add new knowledge in Economics.

The successful candidate, after three years of advanced study and research closely supervised by Faculty members, will be able to: i) ask relevant research questions; ii) design a research strategy; iii) use up-to-date modelling and empirical approaches; iv) present the results in articles publishable in international scientific journals. Students develop these skills by doing research in one of six research areas in which our Faculty is at the frontier of economic research: Econometrics, Economic Theory, Individual Decisions and Experimental Economics, Environmental and Energy Economics, Industrial Organization, International Trade, Global Forms and Migration, Labor and Education Economics, Macroeconomics, Monetary and Fiscal Policy Public economics and Policy Evaluation. Students of the program will have access to the research facilities of both Universities. They will be also encouraged to attend seminars which are also regularly organized by both Universities.

We invite expressions of interest from outstanding graduates in the fields of Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Business or other social sciences who hold a Master’s degree or diploma, or expect to graduate by November 30, 2020 and have a strong interest in the field of Economics.

What our users think about us

Gökhan

I have been a member of INOMICS community for over 8 years. I came across the platform when I was looking for a summer school in Europe to prepare myself for my Master’s studies, so I decided to give it a shot. As soon as I found my summer course on INOMICS (which I enjoyed a lot), I started to explore the website more and realized that I can also use it for finding great PhD programs, academic jobs, conferences and professional courses. I think it is the most complete source of information for students or career seekers in the field of economics. Gökhan, PhD Student in Economics at Ankara University

Carolina

INOMICS has been quite useful, since information about courses, universities and scholarships is usually hard to access. This is especially true when it comes to the quantity of information one can obtain on INOMICS. I also know that I will be using it to find job postings at the end of this year when I go to the job market! Carolina, PhD Student in International Economics at Brandeis University

PhD in Economics, Statistics and Data Science

  • Fatti e persone
  • Working papers

The four-year PhD in Economics, Statistics and Data Science (ECOSTATDATA)  provides the most effective response to the important challenges which nowadays doctoral programmes in the areas of economics, statistics and data analytics, both in Italy and Europe, have to cope with: i) high qualification of the faculty, in terms of teaching abilities and publication records; ii) capability of attracting high quality students; iii) interdisciplinarity; iv) internationalization; v) relations with the non-academic job market; vi) placement of students who have successfully discussed their dissertations.

ECOSTATDATA builds upon the fruitful collaboration among economists, statisticians and data scientists from the Department of Economics, Management and Statistics (DEMS) and the Department of Statistics and Quantitative Methods of the University of Milano-Bicocca (UniMiB), which has started twenty years ago within the BSc in Statistics and Economics, as well as the MSc in Statistics and Economics and is going on with the more recent MSc in Data Science.

DEMS - University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy

The Department of Economics, Management and Statistics (DEMS) of the University of Milano-Bicocca invites applications to its PhD Programme in Economics, Statistics and Data Science (ECOSTATDATA) for the academic year 2024-25 (XL cycle).

The PhD Programme is articulated in  three curricula , Economics (ECO), Statistics (STAT) and Big Data & Analytics for Business (BIDAB). The length of the PhD Programme is  four years , starting in late October 2024 (the precise starting date will be announced in due course on the PhD website).

The Call of Applications 2024-2025 offers at least 10 fully-funded scholarships .

The selection procedure is regulated by the official Call for Applications (Bando di Concorso), which will be published in the Doctoral School’s and in the PhD programme websites  on April 12, 2024 , with deadline on May 14, 2024.

The official Call for Applications contains detailed information on: i) the documents which each candidate has to submit; ii) structure, contents and timing (May 27, 2024 - June 21, 2024) of the entrance examination; iii) description of the projects related to the scholarships and positions offered.

The official Call for Applications will be published  here .

The PhD programme (in a nutshell...)

Introduction.

ECOSTATDATA belongs to the PhD School of UniMiB, it is affiliated to DEMS, it lasts four years and it is articulated in three curricula, the original two curricula Economics (ECO) and Statistics (STAT), and, starting from cycle XXXVII (academic year 2021-2022), the “new” curriculum Big Data & Analytics for Business (BiDAB) .

The first-year teaching activities are mainly devoted to structured courses (tool courses), which are compulsory. Some of these courses are fixed and specific to each curriculum, some are in common between the three curricula, some other courses are chosen by students within each curriculum.

The second-year teaching activities take the form of less structured courses (elective courses or reading groups).

In general, the first-year courses are offered by “internal” teachers, while second-year courses are often open to the collaboration of foreign instructors (visiting scholars).

The curriculum Economics (ECO)

This curriculum is indicated to students with a strong background in quantitative economics and provides advanced training in econometrics, microeconometrics, time series analysis, microeconomics and macroeconomics.

The curriculum Statistics (STAT)

This curriculum is designed for students with a strong background in statistics, both methodological and applied , and provides advanced training in probability, stochastic processes, statistical inference, Bayesian statistics, statistical learning, statistical modelling, computational statistics and data analysis.

The “new” curriculum Big Data & Analytics for Business (BiDAB)

This curriculum starts from cycle XXXVII (academic year 2021-2022) , and provides students with rigorous training in data management and programming, with focus on: the analysis of large amounts of structured and unstructured data (natural language); the main paradigms of big data and data visualization, based on the use of innovative techniques of machine learning, text and web mining.

“Flexible” and “training” profiles

By means of appropriate sequences of courses, suggested and monitored by the Programme Committee and the supervisors, students are able to build up “flexible” profiles, which are mainly addressed to scientific research, both in universities or in non-academic institutions, at national or international level.

ECOSTATDATA facilitates the interaction between economic, statistical and data management skills by proposing innovative “training” profiles, which are  mainly addressed to the non-academic job market. The “training” profiles aim at:

  • offering to the non-academic job market high-level skills which are not currently available;
  • attracting students who are interested in ECOSTATDATA as a way to gain new and advanced skills to be immediately spent into that segment of the job market which is not academically- or research-oriented;
  • eliciting the collaboration of high-quality national multi-national companies, which are active in human capital investment and are ready to use the instruments of the executive doctorate, the apprenticeship contracts as well as the direct financing of a PhD scholarship on specific research projects.

Length of the programme

The current length of many PhD programmes in economics, statistics and data science in Italy, including the PhD in Economics DEFAP-Bicocca and in Statistics and Mathematical Finance of UniMiB, is three years. This length is insufficient to guarantee that the PhD theses meet the quality standards achieved by the best European PhD programmes. For this reason, ECOSTATDATA lasts four years . This duration is in line with the recent choices of some of the best Italian PhD programmes in economics, statistics and data science, as well as the PhD programmes in this area offered by the most prestigious European academic institutions.

Interdisciplinarity

ECOSTATDATA fosters interdisciplinary research activities, by favouring co-tutorships between economists, statisticians and data scientists, as well as through the “flexible” and “training” profiles.

Relations with the non-academic job market

ECOSTATDATA is particularly active in collaborating with national, multi-national, high-quality and innovation-oriented companies. In particular, ECOSTATDATA is able to: i) offer high-level skills which are not currently available on the non-academic job market; ii) attract students who are interested in ECOSTATDATA as a way to gain new and advanced skills to be immediately spent into that segment of the job market which is not academically- or research-oriented; iii) elicit the collaboration of high-quality national multi-national companies, which are active in human capital investment and are ready to use the modern instruments of the executive doctorate, the apprenticeship contracts as well as the direct financing of PhD scholarships on specific research projects.

Internationalization

The international experience which has flourished within the PhD in Economics DEFAP-Bicocca and the PhD in Statistics and Mathematical Finance of UniMiB, together with the professional networks developed by many faculty members, guarantees that ECOSTATDATA is particularly active in collaborating with prestigious foreign universities, in terms of both students and faculty members exchange programs and joint degrees.

ECOSTATDATA is managed by two bodies:

  • the Programme Committee (PC), that is the executive and decision-making board composed by full professors, associate professors and researcher of UniMiB and from other renowned Italian and foreign universities and research institutions;
  • the Advisory Board (AB), which collaborates with the PC to organize the teaching and research activities of the programme, is headed by the programme Coordinator and is formed by a limited number of professors and researchers who are representative of the three curricula.

Teaching activities

The teaching activities proposed by ECOSTATDATA are organized during the first two years and differ for each curriculum, although some courses are common. Some economics courses at the first and the second year within the curriculum Economics can be offered jointly with the PhD programme in Economics and Finance of the Catholic University of Milano.

First- year courses

  • Curriculum Economics (selected courses)

Mathematics; Computational Statistics I; Econometrics; Microeconometrics; Time Series Analysis; Microeconomics; Macroeconomics; Research Methods; Finance.

  • Curriculum Statistics (selected courses)

Mathematical Analysis, Numerical Optimization, Probability, Stochastic Processes, Bayesian Statistics, Statistical Inference, Statistical Learning, Computational statistics II, Statistical Modelling, R for Data Science, Data Management.

  • Curriculum Big Data & Analytics for Business (selected courses)

Databases for Structured/Unstructured Data (SQL); Programming in Python; Data Quality and Cleaning for Big Data; Architecture for Big Data Processing; Machine Learning; Cloud & Distributed Algorithm; Data Mining; Natural Language processing and Understanding; Human-Centered AI; Social Media Analysis; Semantic Web; Deep Learning and Computer Vision for Business; Data Visualization & Visual Analysis.

Second-year courses

Second-year courses are mainly “reading groups”, that are built upon the research interests of both instructors and students, and are  articulated into one/two introductory lecture/s and a series of meetings where students critically discuss the readings assigned by the instructor during the initial lecture.

The second-year courses are generally offered during the first part of the second year, in order forstudents to be full-time dedicated to their dissertations as early as possible.

Within each curriculum, a careful selection of courses, monitored by the PC and the student’s supervisor, allows each student to identify a “flexible” profile, which coherent with his/her research interests.

Generally, structured courses have written exams, while the exams associated with the reading groups are more flexible (e.g. written projects and/or oral presentations). The organization of the exams (i.e. form, number of questions, etc.) is decided by the PC and communicated to students at the beginning of each course.

Monitoring the quality of teaching

The PC runs every year a systematic evaluation of the quality of the courses offered by the PhD programme, by submitting to each student of a given course a detailed questionnaire. Data from the questionnaires are elaborated statistically, sent to each instructor, and discussed within the PC, in order to identify potential problems and solutions.

Admissions to the second year and to years after the second

Admission to the second year is based on the performance of each student in the first-year exams, including the number of “fail” and the number of “resits” each student has been given. Admissions to the third and the fourth years are based on the progresses of the research work. Rules on admission to the second and subsequent years, as well as all the other rules regulating the teaching and research activities of ECOSTAT are formalized by the PC and communicated to each student after enrollment.

Research activities

The Programme Committee (PC) approves the (minimum) number of papers which form a typical PhD dissertation, namely 2. These papers have to be self-contained, independent and potentially publishable on high-quality internationally refereed journals.

Supervision

In order to facilitate students in identifying a sound research project and a suitable supervisor, within the first part of the year the PC organizes a presentation of the research groups which are active among the PC and the Advisory Board (AB) members. Supervisors are asked to systematically monitor the progresses made by their supervisees and periodically report to the PC about the proceedings of their dissertations.

PhD students, especially from the second year, are strongly invited to attend the department seminars organized on a weekly basis at UniMiB. Students of both curricula are also invited to present the progress of their research work in specific seminars, which are part of the student’s evaluation process and, if possible, are jointly organized in order to enhance cross-fertilization between economists, statisticians and data scientists.

Admission to third and fourth year

Admission to the third and fourth year is formalized by the PC, based on the evaluation of the student’s research work. Admission to the third year takes also into account the performance of each student in the second-year exams.

Admission to external evaluation

Fourth-year students should present, by the end of the year, the final version of their dissertation in front of the PC. If possible, each presentation will be assigned a discussant. The admission to the external reviewers is formalized by the PC, based on the overall evaluation of the PhD thesis.

Thesis discussion

Based on the reports of the external reviewers, students are admitted to the discussion in front of the Evaluation Committee either with minor or major revisions. Students who have successfully defended their dissertation are awarded by the Evaluation Committee the title of “PhD in Economics and Statistics” (students enrolled in cycles XXXIV, XXXV and XXXVI) or the title of “PhD in Economics, Statistics and Data Science” (students enrolled from cycle XXXVII). Students can request to (and obtain from) the Administrative Offices of UniMiB an official document reporting the specific curriculum they have been enrolled in.

ECOSTATDATA takes care of the optimal placement of its students. On this respect, the Programme Committee is very active in: i) providing students with systematic and detailed information on the job market, domestic and international, academic and non-academic; ii) advising and assisting students who intend to apply for academic positions abroad.

We have organized an online meeting to introduce you to our PhD Programme. During this meeting we presented the  PhD programme in Economics and Management of the University of Padova  and we talked about admissions, structure, faculty, courses, activities, placement.

You can watch the video  here

We offer a full-time, four-year advanced doctoral programme for outstanding students who want to achieve an ambitious training in one of our  two curricula :  Economics  or  Management . For each curriculum, the PhD  training varies  and takes place during the  first year . Most classes take place in Padova, while some courses are organised jointly with the University of Verona. By the end of the first year all students have identified a supervisor, the topic of their thesis, and present their first “summer” paper.

During the second, and third year, students work exclusively on their thesis under the  close supervision  of two faculty members and enjoy a  vibrating research environment  .

During the fourth year, students are expected to conclude their thesis and go to the  academic job market . The department supports students actively in this endeavor. Over the years, our graduates have achieved  placements  in  prestigious universities  such as the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, University of Warwick, University of Exeter Business School, University of Concordia, Tuck School of Business, EUI, IESE, ESADE, Trinity College, University of Copenhagen, University of New South Wales, University of Groningen, and several Italian Universities. Other have joined  important institutions  such as the Bank of Italy, the OECD, and the World Bank.

At least 3 months of the PhD is spent in  a research institution abroad . Over the years, our PhD students visited outstanding universities such as, for example, Columbia University, London School of Economics, New York Stern School of Business (US), Penn University, University of Chicago, University of Toulouse and University of Georgia. Others have taken advantage of the  exchange agreements  of our institution with international partners like Boston University and the University of Michigan.

The presentation of our program is available  here .

PhD in Economics - Universities of Milan and Pavia

Welcome to the PhD in Economics of the Universities of Milan and Pavia . The PhD in Economics is an inter-university research-based training programme dedicated to prepare excellent economists.

We provide advanced training in fundamental skills in theoretical, applied and empirical economics, and we supervise doctoral students who want to develop research projects that add new knowledge in Economics, and who want to acquire the competences needed for a career in policy making at the national and international level.

Objective and learning outcomes

The programme aims at preparing outstanding scholars for professional careers in Universities, Government, or research departments of private and public institutions.

The successful candidate, after three years of advanced study and research closely supervised by Faculty members, will be able to:

  • Propose economic policies to address practical economic situations, relevant real-world economic issues and evaluate their effectiveness;
  • Ask relevant research questions;
  • Design a research strategy;
  • Use up-to-date modelling and empirical approaches;
  • Present the results in articles publishable in international scientific journals.

Research areas

Students develop these skills by doing research in one of eight research areas in which our Faculty is at the frontier of economic research:

Main features and aims A short presentation of the PhD program is available here: Presentation .

The program provides methods of scientific research leading to an advanced profile in the fields of economics and finance. The program aims to train academic and professional figures able to autonomously perform research in economics and finance. PhD graduates are endowed with critical and problem-solving skills, in which to matter are the ability to identify and frame a problem in a general context, analyze it, manage and process data through a statistical approach, interpret the findings and communicate concrete suggestions. The program is four years long and each cycle offers at least four scholarships. Students have access to a dedicated room and other facilities of the Department of Economics, in addition to personal research funds. Training activities, divided in two separate tracks (“Economics” and “Mathematics and Data Analytics for Finance”), are entirely held in English and described below.

Moreover, the program co-organizes on a regular basis workshops, winter and summer schools as educational activities and interaction opportunities for students. The list of recent activities is available here: List of workshops . The program also encourages thesis co-supervision agreements with foreign universities and research bodies as well as professional doctorates; please see the guidelines (in Italian) . The program also promotes the visit of external PhD students from foreign universities. Details on the available options are reported in this document: Information for external PhD students .

The University of Verona is among the top hundred world universities with less than 50 years in the rankings of the Times Higher Education. The Department of Economics is permanently among the first Italian departments for scientific production in the CUN 13 Area of Economic Sciences and Statistics. In the ranking produced by RepEc, the Department ranks in the top 10% of the Italian distribution and in the top 25% of the world distribution of research departments and institutions in economics. It was recently awarded by MUR as “Excellence Department 2023-2027”.

For further information, please contact the program coordinator, Prof. Alessandro Bucciol ( [email protected] ).

Training and research plan In the first year, PhD students attend advanced courses, offered in collaboration with the University of Padua, both compulsory on general topics and elective on more specific topics. The list of courses offered is available here: List of courses . In the second year, PhD students start working on their thesis and are encouraged to shape a personalized study curriculum based on their research interests, also attending courses offered outside from the PhD program. In the third and fourth years, PhD students mainly devote themselves to research activities with the support of the supervisors. A study and research stay in a foreign university or research institution for a period of six-twelve months usually takes place in this period. The experience abroad is financially supported with a 50% raise in the scholarship.

The final thesis must contain original scientific production, able of reaching publication of at least three articles in highly reputable scientific journals and this way contribute to create a competitive curriculum vitae according to the most rigorous international standards.

Professional profiles and employment opportunities PhD graduates in Economics and Finance may undertake positions at universities, research institutes, consulting firms, further public and private companies working in the industrial, credit and insurance sectors. Students close to complete the program benefit from the support of a tutor advising them on the most appropriate path to undertake.

Having been created in 2021, the program does not have statistics on the employment opportunities of the PhD graduates yet. Graduates from the predecessor program in “Economics and Management” have covered top job positions, choosing in 70% of the cases the academic career (e.g., Harvard Business School, London School of Economics) and in the remaining 30% of the cases the business world (e.g., Cattolica Assicurazioni, GSK Italia).

The PhD in Economics is a 4-year programme designed for highly qualified and motivated students who wish to acquire the research and analytical skills of the international scientific community in Economics. The Programme is offered in close cooperation with UCA-University of Cote d’Azur (Nice, France), and an agreement for exchange of students and faculty is also in place with the University of Strasbourg (France) and IMT-School Lucca. Students attend one year and a half of intensive course work, part of which (2-3 months) is hosted at the UCA. After the training period, students will proceed to supervised research work, yielding an original dissertation to be discussed in a final, public examination. It is expected that students produce articles publishable in international journals. PhD students are exposed to the vivid research environment and participate to various ongoing research activities of the Institute of Economics at Scuola Sant’Anna (seminars, conferences, research projects). The Programme is also part of a large international network of institutions and scholars, supporting exchanges of research students and faculty.

Areas of study and research facilities

The training covers traditional domains of economic analysis (micro, macro, econometrics) but also offers the unique opportunity to study and get involved in research fields often neglected in standard PhD Courses. In line with the core research interests and expertise of the Institute of Economics at Sant’Anna and associate institutions, Advanced and Field topics encompass: evolutionary perspectives on economic change, firm-industry dynamics, economics of innovation, agent-based computational economics, economic networks and complexity, economic history and history of economic thought, and a broad range of quantitative tools for the analysis of big-data and economic dynamics. PhD students have access to research facilities (software, hardware, data) available via the Scuola library, the Institute of Economics, and the computational infrascture of the Department of Excellence EMBEDS.

Job Opportunities

The Programme is primarily intended for students willing to pursue an academic career but also provides professional research skills to work in public and private research institutions. Former PhD candidates now work as postdoctoral research fellows, assistant professors, etc. in well-reputed Italian and international universities (e.g., Paris-Sorbonne, Utrecht University, University of York, New School New York, Cornell University, University of Bielefeld, Sciences Po, University of Strasbourg), research institutions (e.g., UN-ECLAC, ECB, Bank of Italy, STATEC-Luxembourg, OECD-Paris, JRC-Seville, Italian Ministry of Economic and Finance), and in the private sector (e.g., UBS).

Global Scholar Emma Abrams explores sustainable solutions through UD’s environmental and resource economics major

Many people may not realize how tightly bound economics and environmental problems are. Because of their seemingly fated interconnectivity, the University of Delaware environmental and resource economics major is an interdisciplinary tractor beam for undergraduate students like sophomore Emma Abrams. The UD Global Scholar is using her education to create a sustainable future.

The coursework places a strong emphasis on the environment and sustainability, honing in on the economic aspects of pressing environmental issues.

“The first time I heard of a major in environmental and resource economics was when I toured UD,” Abrams said. “It was exactly what I was looking for in a program. It would give me the knowledge and confidence I need to make policy decisions about the environment.”

Christina McGranaghan , assistant professor in the Department of Applied Economics and Statistics , feels that this program allows students to attain a unique perspective on environmental policy and economics.

“Students acquire quantitative skills that give them a holistic view of the environmental problems we face,” said McGranaghan, who is Abrams’ academic advisor. “Understanding these problems and the policy angles that exist are crucial skills students take away from this program.”

Abrams is taking advantage of UD’s many undergraduate research opportunities through the Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN) Environmental Scholars Program . She is currently working with McGranaghan and her graduate student Laura Taylor on a project specifically about minimizing social pressure in coastal buyback programs.

Homes in areas that suffer from frequent storms or flooding can become eligible for buyouts. Most of these programs are voluntary and offer homeowners the fair market value of their home. Homeowners can choose to accept the offer and move away or to reject the offer and stay in their home. If the homeowners move, the land is converted into open space in perpetuity and typically used to create wetland buffers to protect other residential areas.

In some states, the government offers financial incentives that encourage multiple homeowners in one area to move together. This means that if people move with their neighbors, everyone who moves will receive a larger amount of money.

“With the project Emma is involved in, we’re studying how homeowners feel about these incentives,” McGranaghan said.

By offering group incentives, some members of the community may feel pressured to take the offer, even if they do not want to move. This social pressure that’s created can feel like coercion, which is undesirable in explicitly voluntary programs like coastal buybacks.

Emma Abrams (left) works closely with graduate student Laura Taylor on minimizing social pressure in coastal buyback programs.

“Our project tests group coordination incentives with the goal of minimizing social pressure, for example by giving people a fallback option if the whole group doesn’t want to move away,” Taylor said.

“This is cool for me to get to work on since I am from Charleston, South Carolina, and watch buyback programs happen firsthand,” Abrams added.

For students in the environmental and resource economics major, reaching out to professors and participating in undergraduate research is very common and encouraged.

“Our department has a lot of expertise in economics experiments; there are a lot of opportunities for students to participate in research and get hands-on experience,” McGranaghan said.

“From personal experience, I felt like the undergraduate program made a school with upwards of 24,000 students feel small,” said Taylor, who also obtained her undergraduate degree at UD. “Every professor in the department is so supportive, and I became close with professors even as an undergraduate.”

On top of her involvement with undergraduate research, Abrams is involved with many different programs that enhance her degree.

By spending a semester in New Zealand through UD’s World Scholars Program , Abrams was acquainted with topics related to environmentalism, sustainability and agriculture. The coursework ranged from economics, geology and environment and society.

“We talked a lot about citizen participation in decision-making around environmental problems and natural disasters,” Abrams said. “We also all took a Māori culture class that impacted me as a person and how I think about sustainability and environmental justice.”

Outside of her coursework, Abrams secured an internship with Emerger Strategies, a sustainable business consulting firm, where she helps businesses reduce their carbon footprint and minimize waste.

She also serves as the policy and outreach chair for Sunrise Movement, an environmental justice organization on campus. Student members focus on endorsing political candidates in Delaware whose campaigns value sustainability and green energy.

“During the 2022 election cycle, all of the state candidates we endorsed ended up winning, which was a huge success for us,” Abrams said.

Today, it can be easy to fall victim to feeling helpless when it comes to the compounding challenges of climate change and other environmental issues, but students like Abrams are determined to do something about it.

“I appreciate my program because it has a concrete and quantifiable impact on the environment and climate change,” Abrams said. “There is also just so much opportunity that that program offers which is why I chose UD to begin with and why I continue to love the program.”

Two female business students wearing suits work at a computer

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 10, 2024) – The Willie A. Deese College of Business and Economics at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is the No. 1 business school among America’s historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), according to U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Graduate Colleges” rankings, released Tuesday.

The Deese College has now appeared in the Top 100 for four consecutive years, coming in at a tie for No. 79 with the University of Detroit Mercy, a private, Roman Catholic campus. Clark Atlanta University (No. 93, tie) is the only other ranked HBCU. Howard, with which N.C. A&T was tied last year, is unranked this year.

Among North Carolina schools, A&T only trails Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University. The college is named for A&T alumnus Willie A. Deese, who served prominently as president of global manufacturing for the pharmaceutical giant, Merck. Now retired, Deese continues to play a prominent role at his alma mater.

“We’re delighted that our Deese College continues to factor so prominently nationally among graduate business schools,” said Lisa Owens-Jackson, Ph.D., interim dean of the Deese College. “Our ranking this year is an honest reflection of the quality of our MBA programs, the excellence of our students and our graduates’ career placement success.”

A&T’s fast-growing master’s and doctoral programs in computer science moved into a tie for No. 163 nationally, up eight positions from last year. A&T ranks No. 7 nationally in graduation of African American master’s graduates in computer science and No. 1 among HBCUs.

Other nationally ranked A&T graduate programs remain in the same positions as last year, owing to multiple factors at U.S. News & World Report . The magazine encountered data issues with its Best Engineering Programs list and has postponed new rankings until that is resolved.

Ranked programs in rehabilitation counseling, biological sciences, earth sciences and mathematics maintained their 2023 positions, as U.S. News has not published new rankings data for those disciplines. Master’s and doctoral rehabilitation counseling programs in the College of Education continue to be A&T’s most highly ranked graduate programs, coming in at No. 46 (tie) nationally.

With nearly 1,700 master’s and doctoral students, A&T continues to grow at the graduate student level. As America’s most affordable doctoral research university, it offers outstanding academic quality at an exceptional price and strong connections to industry. According to U.S. News’ most recent salary rankings, graduates earn the second-highest starting salaries of any campus in the University of North Carolina System.

Title: Marital Investment when Disaster Strikes: Evidence from Indonesia

Format: Hybrid

Organisers: Derrick and Dipima

Abstract: This paper examines the impact of flood exposure on marital investment in Indonesia. By combining household survey data with highly precise satellite data, I leverage the geographical variation in flooding incidents across sub-districts of Indonesia and the within-sample variation in the timing of marriages to assess the impact of flood exposure on household socio-economic factors and three crucial aspects of marriage: (i) the number of marriages, (ii) the average age at marriage, and (iii) the average bride-price paid at marriages. Employing a two-way fixed effects model, this paper compares marital outcomes between couples residing in flood-affected sub-districts and those in unaffected sub-districts to shed light on how large-scale income shocks, brought about by climate change, shape marital arrangements and outcomes in a low-income context. Finally, this paper discusses mechanisms through which the increased prevalence of flooding, driven by the acceleration of climate change, may have long-lasting ramifications.
