SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships

Fall 2023 competition, on this page, description, future challenge areas, value and duration, eligibility, application process, application deadlines, indigenous applicants, selection process, selection criteria, notification of results, regulations, policies and related information, contact information.

Note: Both the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships and the  Canada Graduate Scholarships—Doctoral Program  (CGS D) are offered through one annual national competition. Applicants need to submit only one application to be considered for one or both awards. As each award has notable differences, applicants must read the descriptions of each award carefully to determine if they are eligible to apply for and hold each award. Applicants eligible for both the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships and CGS D Scholarships will automatically be considered for both awards.

The SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships are expected to respond to the objectives of the  Research Training and Talent Development program .

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships support high-calibre students engaged in doctoral programs in the social sciences and humanities. This support allows scholars to fully focus on their doctoral studies, to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields, and to contribute to the Canadian research ecosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards.

SSHRC welcomes applications involving  Indigenous research , as well as those involving  research-creation .

Joint initiatives and supplements

SSHRC offers supplementary funding to scholarship and fellowship award holders, some of which is offered through joint initiatives. SSHRC collaborates with organizations from across the not-for-profit, private and public sectors to support and promote training, research and connection activities in the social sciences and humanities. SSHRC’s joint initiatives are designed to reflect SSHRC’s strategic objectives and mandate, inform decision-makers and, in certain cases, address specific needs of its partners.

Learn more about joint initiatives .

For a complete list of available supplements and joint initiatives, see SSHRC’s funding search tool .

Unless otherwise indicated, there is no separate application process for most initiatives and supplements. However, candidates must indicate they wish to be considered for an initiative or a supplement, and explain why, in their application form.

SSHRC invites all applicants to review  Imagining Canada’s Future ’s 16 future global challenges and to consider addressing one or more of these areas in their research proposal. This is not an evaluation criterion for merit review and does not offer additional or dedicated research funds for this funding opportunity.

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships are valued at $20,000 per year for 12, 24, 36 or 48 months, up to a total of $80,000.

SSHRC determines the value and duration of an award based on the number of months of full-time study (or equivalent) the applicant will have completed by December 31 of the calendar year of application. See the  Eligibility—Applicant section for more information.

Note: The value and duration of SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships differ from those of the CGS D Scholarships.

To be eligible to apply, an applicant must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act  (Canada), as of the application deadline;
  • not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from the  Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the  Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council  (NSERC) or SSHRC;
  • not have submitted more than one scholarship or fellowship application per academic year to either CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC. (Should more than one application be submitted, the first eligible application submitted will be retained; nominations to the Vanier CGS program do not count toward this limit—see SSHRC’s regulations on multiple applications and on holding multiple awards for more information.); and
  • have completed  no more than 48 months  of full-time study in their doctoral program by December 31 of the calendar year of application.

Some eligibility requirements for the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships differ from the eligibility requirements of the CGS D Scholarships .

Months of study

Eligibility for a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship is based on the number of months of full-time study, including summer months, the applicant will have completed by  December 31 of the calendar year of application . Part-time study is counted as half time. For example, two terms of part-time study count as one term of full-time study.

Note: The agencies count all studies toward the doctoral degree for which funding is requested, whether or not they were completed at the degree-granting institution.

Fast-track, joint and direct-entry programs

For applicants registered in a master’s program and then transferred to a doctoral program (fast-track), the months of study completed are calculated starting from the date when the applicant transferred into the doctoral program.

For applicants registered in a joint program, and a master’s degree is obtained as part of the program (e.g., MA/PhD), the months of study are calculated starting from the date when an applicant is officially registered in the joint program (including the master’s portion of the program).

For applicants registered in a joint professional undergraduate/PhD program (MD/PhD, JD/PhD, DVM/PhD), only the months of study in the PhD portion will be counted.

For applicants registered in a doctoral program directly from an undergraduate program (i.e., never enroled in a graduate program), the months of study completed are calculated starting from the date when they began the doctoral program. These applicants, however, could be eligible to apply to the  Canada Graduate Scholarships—Master’s Program  (CGS M) for their first year of doctoral funding. Eligible applicants who apply for a CGS M could maximize the period for which they receive funding. Applicants are responsible for choosing the type of award for which they apply.

Subject matter

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships support and promote research excellence in a wide variety of disciplines, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research.

Consult the guidelines for selecting the appropriate federal granting agency and the guidelines on subject matter eligibility for more information.

Program of study

An eligible doctoral program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit. This component must be merit/expert reviewed at the institutional level as a requirement for completing the program.

Joint programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD), as well as clinically oriented programs of study including clinical psychology, are eligible if they have a significant autonomous research component as described above.

Eligibility to hold an award

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships  are tenable at any recognized institution in Canada or abroad.

  • For the fellowship to be held abroad, the award holder must have  completed  a bachelor’s or master’s degree at a Canadian postsecondary institution.
  • For award holders who do not meet this requirement, the fellowships are tenable only at recognized Canadian postsecondary institutions.

The CGS D scholarships are tenable only at eligible Canadian institutions. There are no exceptions.

Award holders can be eligible to hold their awards part time. Refer to the  Tri-Agency Research Training Award Holder’s Guide for further information.

Qualifying or “make-up” years of study are not eligible for support.

Federal government employees require prior approval from SSHRC to be eligible to hold an award. Supporting documentation from the employer might be required.

For other requirements, consult the Tri-Agency Research Training Award Holder’s Guide.

Applicants must complete the  application form  according to the instructions .

Applicants eligible for both a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship and CGS D Scholarship will  automatically  be considered for both awards.

To apply, applicants must do the following:

  • ensure that they meet the requirements specified in Value and duration and Eligibility ;
  • complete only one application form, together with the SSHRC CV and required attachments; and
  • determine their current registration status from the Where to submit an application and Quotas subsections below and submit their completed application to the appropriate institution or to SSHRC directly, as required.

Where to submit an application

Applicants must apply either through a Canadian institution with a doctoral awards quota or directly to SSHRC depending on their registration status at the application deadline date and/or their registration status in the calendar year of application. Failure to apply through the correct channel will result in an application being withdrawn from the competition.

To determine the correct channel, applicants must:

  • determine if an institution has a doctoral awards quota for SSHRC; and
  • refer to the chart and supporting information in the document Where should I submit my application?  (PDF, 145 KB)

Applicants should contact the faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) to confirm their registration status in the calendar year of application.

For Canadian institutions with a doctoral awards quota , the term “quota” refers to the maximum number of applications an institution can forward to SSHRC’s national competition.

Institutional deadlines

Applicants applying through their institution must submit their applications by the deadline set by the institution, which may be well in advance of SSHRC’s deadline.

For more information about institutional deadlines, applicants should contact their faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent).

Deadline for submitting directly to SSHRC

Applicants eligible to apply directly to SSHRC (consult Where should I submit my application?  [PDF, 145 KB]) must submit using the appropriate application portal before 8 p.m. (eastern) on October 17. If the deadline falls on a weekend or a public holiday observed in Ontario, where SSHRC’s offices are, applications must be submitted by the following business day before 8 p.m. (eastern). Incomplete applications may be withdrawn from the competition.

Applicants requiring assistance while preparing their application should  communicate with SSHRC  well in advance of their application deadline.

Institutions can recommend applications from Indigenous applicants for submission to the doctoral awards competition beyond their application quota, if applicants agree to their personal information being used for this purpose. Applicants can do so by making the appropriate selection in the application form.

Indigenous applicants who have selected this option and who are required to submit their application directly to SSHRC are automatically evaluated in the national competition.

For more information, see SSHRC’s Indigenous Talent Measures .

Applications are evaluated, and available funds awarded, through a competitive merit review process . SSHRC bases funding decisions on the recommendations of the selection committee and on the funds available.

Institutional review

The faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at each Canadian institution is responsible for coordinating the institutional evaluation of doctoral award applications. Institutions then submit applications for SSHRC’s consideration according to their doctoral award quotas .

SSHRC review

Multidisciplinary Doctoral Awards Selection Committees covering broad research areas evaluate applications (whether sent directly to SSHRC or by the institutions).

The evaluation of doctoral award applications, whether by institutions or by SSHRC, is based on the following criteria:

SSHRC’s  Guidelines for the Merit Review of Indigenous Research  are relevant for researchers (applicants and project directors) and students preparing SSHRC applications related to  Indigenous research . SSHRC provides these guidelines to merit reviewers to help build understanding of Indigenous research and research-related activities, and to assist committee members in interpreting SSHRC’s specific evaluation criteria in the context of Indigenous research. SSHRC makes concerted efforts to include experts in Indigenous research on doctoral and postdoctoral merit review committees. The guidelines may also be of use to external assessors, postsecondary institutions and partner organizations that support Indigenous research.

San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment

In 2019, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and SSHRC, along with other national research funders, signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) . As such, the agencies are committed to excellence in research funding and to ensuring that a wide range of research results and outcomes are considered and valued as part of the assessment process.

SSHRC informs all applicants of the outcome of their applications in April of each year via the SSHRC Extranet for Applicants.

The faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) of Canadian institutions with a quota will be informed of their applicants’ competition results via the Grants and Scholarships Administration Portal.

SSHRC will publish the names (and other basic award information) of scholarship recipients on its website.

All communications of results, including publication of recipients’ list, meet all requirements of the  Access to Information Act  and the  Privacy Act .

SSHRC reserves the right to determine the eligibility of applications based on the information included. SSHRC also reserves the right to interpret the regulations and policies governing its funding opportunities.

All applicants and scholarship/fellowship holders must comply with the  regulations governing fellowship and scholarship applications  and with the regulations set out in the  Tri-Agency Research Training Award Holder’s Guide .

Official languages

Applicants can submit their application in the official language of their choice. Institutions must have mechanisms in place to review both English and French applications.

Guidelines and related support material

All applicants for SSHRC funding should consult the following guidelines while preparing their application:

  • SSHRC’s  Definitions of Terms  for terms used in the application process;
  • the  Guidelines for Effective Research Training , which can also be useful to reviewers and postsecondary institutions; and
  • SSHRC’s  Indigenous Research Statement of Principles and  Guidelines for the Merit Review of Indigenous Research  for applications involving  Indigenous research ;

Canada Graduate Scholarships — Doctoral program

Description, agency-specific doctoral awards, eligibility, program of study, application procedures, application deadlines, selection process, indigenous student researchers, black student researchers, selection criteria, san francisco declaration on research assessment, notification of results, conditions of the award, official languages, related opportunities.

The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships — Doctoral (CGS D) program is to promote continued excellence in Canadian research by rewarding and retaining high-calibre doctoral students at Canadian institutions. By providing support for a high-quality research training experience to awardees, the CGS D program strives to foster impacts within and beyond the research environment.

The Canada Graduate Scholarships — Doctoral (CGS D) program is a federal program of scholarships administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Scholarships are awarded through national competitions by these three granting agencies.

The CGS D program supports and promotes research excellence in a wide variety of disciplines and broad fields of natural sciences and engineering, health and social sciences and humanities, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. This support allows scholars to concentrate on their doctoral studies more fully, to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields and to contribute to the Canadian research ecosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards.

In addition to the CGS D, each agency has its own doctoral awards.

For all three agencies, only one application must be completed and submitted to be considered for both a CGS D award and either an agency-specific doctoral award (for NSERC/SSHRC applications) or any available doctoral Priority Announcements (for CIHR applications). CGS D awards are then offered for the top-ranked eligible applications in each agency’s competition.

Some eligibility requirements for CGS D differ from those of the agency-specific doctoral awards. Refer to the appropriate literature for NSERC , CIHR and SSHRC for further details as well as information on doctoral awards tenable at foreign institutions.

To be eligible to apply, you must

  • be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada), as of the application deadline
  • have completed no more than 24 months of full-time study in your doctoral program or the PhD portion of your joint professional undergraduate/PhD program (such as MD/PhD, JD/PhD, DVM/PhD) by December 31 of the calendar year of application if previously enrolled in a graduate program
  • direct-entry applicants must be enrolled in their doctoral program at the time of application
  • if you have not previously completed or enrolled in another graduate program, you must be enrolled in your joint MD/PhD program at the time of application
  • if you fall into this category, you have access to the 36-month window whether or not you were previously enrolled in a master’s program

Note: If you are eligible to apply to the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s (CGS M) program, you may be able to maximize your potential period of funding by applying to the CGS M program for your first year of doctoral funding instead of the CGS D program. You are responsible for choosing the type of award for which you apply. See Other restrictions below for more information.

Number of months

Eligibility for CGS D is based on the number of months of full-time study, including summer months, toward the degree for which you are requesting funding by December 31 of the calendar year of application . Two terms of part-time study count as one term of full-time study.

Note: The agencies count all studies toward the doctoral degree for which funding is requested, whether or not they were completed at the degree-granting institution.

Fast-track and joint programs

Fast-track: If you were registered in a master’s program and subsequently transferred to a doctoral program (fast-track), the months of study completed are calculated starting from the date on which you transferred into the doctoral program.

Joint programs: If you are registered in a joint program and a master’s degree is obtained as part of the program (for example, MA/PhD, MSc/PhD), the months of study are calculated starting from the date on which you are officially registered in the joint program (including the master’s portion of the program).

If you are registered in a joint professional undergraduate/PhD program (such as MD/PhD, JD/PhD, DVM/PhD), only the months of study in the PhD portion will be counted.

Other restrictions

  • You can submit a maximum of one scholarship or fellowship application per academic year to either NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC. Should more than one application be submitted, the eligible application submitted first chronologically will be retained. Nominations to the Vanier CGS program and applications to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program do not count toward this limit (other exceptions may apply to CIHR internships)
  • You cannot have already received a doctoral-level scholarship from NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC (does not apply to CIHR Fellowships)
  • You cannot hold a tenure or tenure-track appointment concurrently with your CGS D award

An eligible doctoral program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as a requirement for completion of the program.

Joint programs with a professional degree (for example, MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD) as well as clinically oriented programs of study , including clinical psychology, are eligible if they have a significant autonomous research component as described above.

Selecting the appropriate agency

You should complete the agency application that is best aligned with your research subject matter to ensure that it is reviewed by experts in disciplines closest to your field(s) of study. For more information refer to Selecting the appropriate federal granting agency .

To complete the application process, refer to the appropriate agency’s application website and instructions.

NSERC: Online system and instructions CIHR: ResearchNET and instructions SSHRC: Online system and instructions

Incomplete applications may be rejected from the competition.

Where to submit an application

You must apply either through a Canadian institution or directly to the appropriate agency depending on your registration status at the application deadline date and/or your registration status in the calendar year of application. Failure to submit an application through the correct channel will result in your application being rejected .

To determine the correct channel, you must

  • determine if an institution has a quota for your selected agency
  • refer to the chart and supporting information in the Where should I submit my application? flowchart

If you are unsure of your registration status in the calendar year of application, contact your faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent).

The term “quota” refers to the maximum number of applications an institution can forward to each agency’s national competition. Institutions receive separate quotas from each agency ( NSERC , CIHR and SSHRC ).

Institution deadlines

If you are applying through an institution, you must submit your application by the deadline set by the institution, which may be well in advance of the agency deadline.

For more information about institutional deadlines, you should contact your faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent).

Agency deadlines

If you are eligible to apply directly to one of the agencies (consult the Where should I submit my application? flowchart), you must submit your application using the appropriate agency application portal before 8:00 p.m. (ET) on October 17. If the deadline falls on a weekend, applications can be submitted the following business day before 8:00 p.m. (ET). Incomplete applications may be rejected.

Institutional review

The faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at each Canadian institution is responsible for coordinating the institutional evaluation of CGS D applications. Institutions then submit applications according to their quotas for consideration to each agency.

Agency review

Agency selection committees review applications (whether sent directly to the agencies or via the institutions).

Institutions may recommend applications from self-identified Indigenous student researchers to the doctoral awards competition beyond their application quota. Self-identified Indigenous student researchers must agree to their personal information being used for this purpose by making the appropriate selection in the application form.

The Government of Canada has deployed additional funds to increase direct support for Black student researchers . CGS D applicants who self-identify as Black and provide consent to be considered for funds targeted towards specific groups may be selected to receive this funding. Each agency has a limited number of additional CGS D awards reserved for this initiative.

For more information, consult the Frequently asked questions about the new Black scholars funding .

The evaluation of CGS D applications, whether by institutions or the agencies, is based on the following criteria:

In 2019, NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC, along with other Canadian research funding agencies, signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) . The agencies are committed to meaningful assessment of excellence in research funding and to ensuring that a wide range of research results and outcomes are considered and valued as part of the assessment process. They will continue work to ensure that their strategies, policies and guidance align with DORA.

Applicants whose applications were submitted to the agencies, whether directly or via their institution, will be notified of results by April 30.

The agencies will publish the names (and other basic award information) of scholarship recipients on their respective websites.

For more information, see the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act .

Applicants and award holders must comply with the policies and guidelines set out in the Tri-agency research training award holder’s guide and in any other documents related to scholarship applications and awards.

The agencies reserve the right to interpret and enforce the policies and guidelines for their funding opportunities set out in their published materials.

Award holders may be eligible to hold their awards part time. Refer to the Tri-agency research training award holder’s guide for further information.

Applicants may submit their application in the official language of their choice. Institutions must have mechanisms in place to review both English and French applications.

CGS D holders may be eligible for:

  • Canada Graduate Scholarships—Michael Smith Foreign Study supplements
  • Canada Graduate Scholarships to Honour Nelson Mandela
  • SSHRC supplements and related initiatives
  • NSERC supplements
  • CIHR related initiatives

If you don’t have PR of Canada so how the supervisor will consider your application and research proposal for postdoc, and if we submit the profile for express entry and give ilets so what would be the path to do research and getting postdoc position in Canada.

Having permanent residency in Canada is not a requirement for being considered for a postdoctoral position. However, it may be advantageous to have permanent residency or a work permit in Canada as it could increase your chances of being hired and may also make it easier for you to enter the country.

When applying for a postdoctoral position, the most important aspect is the strength of your research proposal and your qualifications. Your potential supervisor will evaluate your application based on these factors, as well as your previous research experience and academic achievements.

If you do not have permanent residency or a work permit in Canada, one option is to apply for a temporary work permit or visa specifically for the purpose of doing postdoctoral research in Canada. You can also consider applying for an academic scholarship or fellowship that could support your research in Canada.

If you are interested in applying for permanent residency through Express Entry, you can do so while you are in Canada on a temporary work permit or visa. However, the process for obtaining permanent residency can be lengthy, and it may take some time before you are able to obtain it.

In order to be eligible for Express Entry, you will need to meet the minimum language requirements by taking an approved language test, such as the IELTS. You will also need to meet other eligibility criteria, such as having work experience in a skilled occupation and meeting the minimum points threshold.

Researchers in Canada got most of what they were hoping for in the country’s 2024 federal budget, with a big boost in postgraduate pay and more funding for research and scientific infrastructure.

“We are investing over $5 billion in Canadian brainpower,” said finance minister Chrystia Freeland in her budget speech on 16 April. “More funding for research and scholarships will help Canada attract the next generation of game-changing thinkers.”

Canadian PhD students and postgrads plan mass walkout over low pay

Postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers have been advocating for higher pay for the past two years through a campaign called Support Our Science. They requested an increase in the value, and number, of federal government scholarships, and got more than they asked for. Stipends for master’s students will rise from Can$17,500 (US$12,700) to $27,000 per year, PhDs stipends that ranged from $20,000 to $35,000 will be set to a uniform annual $40,000 and most postdoctoral-fellowship salaries will increase from $45,000 to $70,000 per annum. The number of scholarships and fellowships provided will also rise over time, building to around 1,720 more per year after five years.

“We’re very thrilled with this significant new investment, the largest investment in graduate students and postdocs in over 21 years,” says Kaitlin Kharas, a PhD student at the University of Toronto, Canada, and executive director of Support Our Science . “It will directly support the next generation of researchers.”

Although only a small proportion of students and postdoctoral fellows receive these federal scholarships, other funders tend to use them as a guide for their own stipends.

Many postgraduates said that low pay was forcing them to consider leaving Canada to pursue their scientific career, says Kharas, so this funding should help to retain talent in the country.

“This is going to move us from a searing brain drain to a brain gain, and position us to compete on the world stage,” says Chad Gaffield, chief executive of the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities, based in Ontario, which supported the campaign.

‘Determined to thrive’

The budget also includes marked boosts for basic research. There is an extra $1.8 billion over five years in core funding for the three federal grant-awarding research councils, as well as $400 million for upgrades to the TRIUMF particle accelerator in Vancouver, and more cash for several other large facilities and institutes across the country. There will also be more than $2 billion for the artificial-intelligence sector in Canada.

“[This budget] really emphasizes that Canada is determined to thrive in the twenty-first century based on science and research,” says Gaffield.

Canada announces new innovation agency — and it’s not modelled on DARPA

Others have pointed out that the vast majority of the money in the budget for the research councils is backloaded, with just $228 million coming in the next two years. This means that the gains will be slow, and could be vulnerable to changes in the political climate, says Alex Usher, president of Higher Education Strategy Associates, a consultancy in Toronto. “Do not count on this money being there after an election,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter). Canada’s next federal election is due in October 2025, and the opposition Conservative Party is campaigning on reigning in spending.

The budget also makes some changes to how science funding is organized. Instead of ten different programmes for scholarships and fellowships, with differing levels of support, there will now be a single programme with just three levels — master’s degrees, PhDs and postdoctoral fellowships. Kharas says that this should simplify the system.

The government will also create a new “capstone” research-funding organization to better coordinate the work of the three granting councils and “help to advance internationally collaborative, multi-disciplinary and mission-driven research”, the budget says. It will also create an advisory Council on Science and Innovation, comprised of leaders from academia, industry and the non-profit sector, which will develop a national science-and-innovation strategy to guide priority setting and increase the impact of federal investments. “This should help move us towards a more efficient, well-coordinated and nimble way of supporting research in Canada,” says Gaffield. “I look forward to working with the government to optimize it.”

How To Apply For A Fellowship in Canada

Have you ever wanted to take your research or career to a new level and travel internationally for an extended period of time?  Consider applying for an international fellowship in Canada.  From three months to a year or more, and for students, researchers, or young professionals, the scholarships are intended to enrich their experience, understanding, and perspective of the world. And it is worth applying, especially if you have a truly international idea or want to take your academic career to everyone.

1. Identify Your Goals

First, although a scholarship can be a fantastic opportunity, don’t apply for it just because it sounds fun or if you’re looking for something to take up your time.  My friends who have sought scholarships without clear objectives have often felt apathetic when it came time to launch their projects.

Instead, do it because you know you will enjoy the opportunity, get something out of it, and work on it, which will allow you to promote your interests or improve professionally.  To make sure it’s the right one, ask yourself: What will this experience offer me?  What do I hope to learn and achieve?  How will it affect my career when I return?

 2. Understand Your Eligibility

Many scholarships are based on your academic history but do not stress about that hard class of organic chemistry or that difficult semester of the second year.  The selection committees are not interested in your grade point average (GPA); they are looking for you to confirm that you are responsible, have a good performance, and have reached a certain level.  They are also often more interested in full candidates than in those with perfect qualifications.

If you are still worried, know that scholarships tend to publish your eligibility requirements well before the application deadline. While some require outstanding scores, others are much more flexible. For example, the Rhodes, Gates, and Truman scholarships are for those who excel in academic research and graduate work, while the Fulbright is for those who wish to enter the field (and Fulbright English Teaching Assists are for those who want to teach).  You should be able to find something that fits well.

 3. Get Out

Your statement, essay responses, and portfolio allow you to show who you are and why you fit perfectly in this community, so think hard.  Don’t be afraid to take risks, and don’t stick to a canned response of the kind you think the selection committee wants to read.

Think about what distinguishes you from the other candidates. Do you have experience with new companies that you want to build while learning about microfinance in India? Or maybe you are interested in public health and want to work in a clinic in the field. Let your request reflect who you are. Also, ask your mentors, advisors, and friends to give you their opinions. You will probably see common themes, and that is what you should play in your application.

4. Plan An Amazing Project And launch it.

One of the most important parts of your application is your project proposal.  You must include the selection committee in your plan and explain how it will make it relevant to the real world.

Be realistic about your goals. How would you do your project? What would you consider a successful outcome? Also, understand the time constraints on the ground. Within the time frame of the scholarship, how much can you achieve?  What contacts do you have in the area? What experience have you had doing similar jobs in the past?

Your goal is to show that you can do a great job if you are awarded this scholarship, and it will be helpful if you can show that you have already done the necessary background research and that you have the skills to do this.

5. Get Excellent Recommendations (Honest)

Great recommendations are essential for its application. Make sure your recommendations are from people who have known you for at least a year and who can attest to who you are and what your strengths and successes are. I cannot tell you how many students I have been teaching for two weeks have asked me to write recommendations. I am always obliged to reject them since I cannot say anything meaningful about their work.

Furthermore, I recommend sitting down with your recommender to have a coffee to review why you want this scholarship and the strengths and abilities you would bring to the paper. And do this well in advance. It is very likely that their advisers will be flattered to be asked and will be able to share good advice, but they will need time to write a thoughtful recommendation.

 6. Be Real In Your Interview

During the scholarship interview, you can usually tell who received formal training and who did not. Those who have it are excellent at adhering to an approved script, but they are often ineffective in explaining why the community cares about them.

The lesson here is to be true to yourself and honest about what you want to achieve. If you only try to be the person you think the judges want you to be, they will see it well. Even if you don’t have all the “right” answers, if you can convey your passion for your project, you have a good chance of winning a space.

That said, there is no secret recipe to winning a scholarship. One of my former scholarship advisors suggests that it comes down to a combination of some factors: meeting what the committee is looking for (and how it fits with your goals), the soundness of your application, and, honestly, a bit of luck.

So don’t get caught trying to be perfect or fit into an imagined mold. Clearly define your goals, put your heart into the application, and you may be carrying out the project of your dreams.

Canada pledges dramatic pay rise for PhDs, postdocs – but many will not benefit

Rebecca Trager

The Canadian government has pledged a significant investment in its graduate students and postdoctoral scholars after more than two decades of stagnation . Its 2024 budget proposal , announced on 16 April , provides C$825 million (£481 million) over the next five years to support next-generation researchers by increasing both the number and value of stipends. However, the pay rise will only be seen by graduates who win scarce Tri-Council grants, although it is hoped that as these stipends rise others will need to too to compete.

The budget, which the House of Commons must pass before it is finalised, would provide nearly C$200 million per year, increasing annual master’s and PhD scholarships to $27,000 and $40,000, respectively, and postdoctoral fellowships to $70,000. The budget’s passage is not guaranteed – it needs the support of at least one of three political parties other than the ruling Liberal party.

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister, and Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s deputy prime minister and finance minister, presented the budget on 16 April. The package included funding that ended over 20 years of stagnation in PhD and postdoctoral stipends

The planned increases represent a dramatic jump. Currently, the typical annual stipend in Canada is around C$17,500 for master’s students, C$24,000 for PhDs and C$45,000 for postdocs. The government is also proposing C$1.8 billion to the different funding agencies in Canada over five years to increase core research grant funding.

The funding surge is expected to increase the number of research scholarships and fellowships provided by the government, building to approximately 1720 more graduate students or fellows benefiting each year.

Graduate student and postdoc pay in Canada has remained unchanged for over 20 years . A national survey last year by the Ottawa Science Policy Network found that nearly 90% of graduate students in the country reported feeling stressed and anxious about their finances, and almost one-third said they have considered leaving academia due to financial pressures.

‘These fellowships had the same value for many years, which means their ability to support students had, in many cases, fallen below a livable amount,’ explains Bruce Arndtsen , a chemistry professor at McGill University. ‘Many departments and institutions therefore needed to top these fellowships up from research grants simply to get to our normal stipend level.’

Most chemistry graduates ineligible for raise

Such a significant increase to graduate student stipends in Canada will give top students a competitive stipend and enable Canada to to better retain these students, Arndtsen adds. ‘It will also allow the use of grant funds to better support their research activities rather than topping their fellowship up to needed levels.’

However, he notes that these stipend increases will only apply to the select few who win prestigious Tri-Council awards, and the majority of chemistry graduate students in Canada do not receive these top fellowships but are instead paid from research grants. In fact, Arndtsen notes that funding for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s major chemistry funding programme has also remained stagnant for decades, and he expresses hope that these grants will receive a similar increase in the near term.

Anne Labarre , a sixth-year PhD chemistry student at McGill who is involved in computational drug discovery, celebrated the government’s announcement. Labarre says the PhD stipends at her chemistry department are currently fixed at around C$26,000 per year and emphasises that this increase is significant considering the recent inflation and rent increases in Montreal.

Matthew Berg, who received a PhD in biochemistry from Western University in Canada in 2021 and is now a postdoc at the University of Washington in the US, is optimistic. ‘These increases are going to set the bar for where funding should be for trainees in the sciences and in graduate school,’ he states. ‘Right now, a lot of Canadian graduate students struggle,’ Berg continues. ‘We’ve heard stories of students having to rely on food banks and different support systems in order to just make it through their degree.’

Last year there was a nationwide walkout of students and academics in Canada who were demanding more federal funding for graduate students and postdoc researchers. This month, graduate teaching assistants at Western University went on strike to protest what they deemed unfair wages. Meanwhile, a union representing striking academic workers at York University in Toronto, including teaching assistants and graduate workers, appeared to have reached a tentative deal on 14 April after being on strike over pay since late February.

Berg says he was lucky – he received one of one of the elusive federal awards to support him as a PhD candidate in Canada, which he says was worth about C$35,000 annually for three years. As a postdoc in the US, Berg says he currently receives significantly better compensation, with a stipend equivalent to more than C$90,000.

‘My dream after my PhD is to move to back to Canada and be a professor there,’ he says. ‘But it does make me nervous how difficult it is to get funding there and I don’t want to run a lab where my students are struggling to survive.’

Michel Cayouette , the vice president of research and academic affairs at the Montreal Clinical Research Institute, says the C$1.8 billion funding boost is great news but will be insufficient to allow supervisors to increase the value of their trainees’ stipends to the amounts announced for award recipients. ‘This means that the vast majority of students and postdocs will continue to struggle financially,’ Cayouette warns. ‘There is therefore more work to do in coming years to fill the gap in funding and ensure that all trainees receive a liveable wage.’
