The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the number of jobs for human resources specialists will be 7% higher in 2029 than in 2019 and that the number of human resources manager roles will increase by 6% in that time frame.

A business cannot function without a workforce, and it's been said that a company's most valuable assets are its people.

The art and science of attracting, selecting, training and retaining a team of skilled workers is complex. Labor laws often dictate how employers may recruit employees and employer responsibilities vis-a-vis workers.

The best practices for ensuring that employees are treated fairly and compensated appropriately are not necessarily clear-cut, and questions surrounding how to create a positive and productive work environment aren't always easy to answer. Undergraduate or graduate degrees in human resources can provide clarity on these aspects of running a successful and ethical for-profit corporation or nonprofit organization.

Here is a guide to the many real-world applications of academic credentials in this field.

The Versatility and Value of a Human Resources Degree

Individuals with human resources degrees can find a niche within whatever industry they prefer, since all kinds of organizations need assistance identifying the right people to hire, deciding who is most worthy of a promotion and figuring out when it's necessary to lay off or fire someone. Also, because of both the Black Lives Matter and the #MeToo movements, many companies are taking steps to promote equity and prevent harassment, which has increased the demand for HR experts with a proven track record of designing and implementing effective diversity and inclusion plans.

Human resources professionals sometimes work for recruitment agencies, headhunting companies or consulting firms, in which case they may serve multiple clients. In-house human resources positions are also an option for someone who wants to focus on the staffing issues of a particular company.

Courtney Harrison, the chief human resources officer at OneLogin, a security technology company based in San Francisco, says the current turmoil in the economy and society makes expertise in human resources more valuable than usual. She notes that many of the biggest challenges that businesses currently face, such as facilitating remote work and reducing burnout among workers, are best addressed by human resources pros.

"Companies of all sizes need HR help, from start-up to mid-size to Fortune 500,” Harrison wrote in an email.

When companies collapse, the cause often has more to do with people than with anything else, Harrison adds. "There are plenty of companies in the corporate graveyard who died not because they did not have great products and ideas but because they could not pull their people and culture together to execute and scale, or they couldn't retain their talent and were just a revolving door of dispensable people."

The job growth forecast for these human resources professionals is higher than average, according to the bureau, which estimates that the average U.S. employment increase among all occupations for the 2019-2029 time period will be 4%.

In 2019, the median annual salary among U.S. human resources specialists was $61,920, while the median yearly pay of a U.S. human resources manager was $116,720, bureau statistics show. The bureau notes that the minimum amount of education typically necessary for these jobs is a bachelor's degree.

"As organizations have come to recognize human capital as a key source of competitive advantage, the demand for HR professionals at all levels continues to grow," Scott Seibert, a professor at the Rutgers University School of Management and Labor Relations in New Jersey and chair of its department of human resource management, wrote in an email.

Seibert notes that aspiring HR leaders who want mid-level or senior-level executive roles typically pursue master's degrees in the field. "Salary potential is virtually unlimited with top-level HR executives receiving salaries in the $300k range with additional company stock options and other executive-level benefits," he says.

There are a variety of human resources jobs, including some that are a good fit for introverts and others that are more suitable for extroverts. It is possible to work behind the scenes in analytical roles, such as jobs that involve calculating an individual's compensation or what a company's overall pay scale should look like. There are also human resources careers that require constant social interaction, such as recruiting.

Some human resources degree programs and certifications use a phrase other than "human resources" to refer to the field of study, especially if they concentrate on a specific branch of HR such as the analytics component, which is sometimes called "people analytics."

"A human resources degree can take you a lot of places, so it really depends on what your specific areas of interest are," Tara Furiani, CEO of Not the HR Lady, a human resources consulting firm and coaching company, wrote in an email. "Most Human Resources departments encompass more than just the traditionally thought of things like benefits and payroll."

Carla Yudhishthu – vice president of people and talent at ThinkHR and Mammoth HR, two human resources service providers that recently merged – warns that "emotional balance" is vital within the human resources field.

"It can be really stressful," she says. "You have to be really good at stress management, because so many things are coming at you, and you do feel the need to respond to everything, to serve everyone, to make sure everyone else is okay."

One reason Yudhishthu chose the human resources field, she says, is because she enjoys interacting with people.

"In the end, it's all about people," she says. "It's about helping leaders be their best, helping employees be their best, helping them find the best in each other."

Uriel is a published researcher with interests in leadership, negotiated work arrangements, and remote work. He aspires to become a research professor in management upon completing his PhD. Uriel teaches HRLR 315, Research Methods and Analysis; HRLR 211, Introduction to Organizational Leadership; and HRLR 212, Career Management.

The Graduate Student Teaching Award recognizes a graduate student who has demonstrated evidence of dedication to instruction through experimentation and successful implementation of innovative techniques and/or contribution to the scholarship of teaching and learning, including experiential learning; and evidence of excellence in instruction as demonstrated by the impact on students' careers and colleagues' teaching/advising practices.

Uriel's PhD advisor Dr. Chenwei Liao noted, "As a first-generation college student, Uriel values the transformative power of education and integrates this perspective into his teaching to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in his classes. His students describe Uriel as an engaging, compassionate, and inspiring instructor who is focused on building authentic relationships and helping students learn. His classroom is an inclusive space for all to explore their identities as a leader and as a future human resources professional," shared student Maura L.

"Besides research, teaching has also been a rewarding aspect of my doctoral journey in the School of Human Resources & Labor Relations at MSU. The CSS graduate student teaching award only further motivates me to continue serving our students to the best of my ability. College of Science & Mathematics

The Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences at Rowan University invites applications for one or more open rank tenure track/tenured faculty positions in the general areas of biological and biomedical sciences. A Ph.D. in biology or related area is required and prior academic experience and scholarly productivity is expected, commensurate with rank.  Candidates should demonstrate the ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels and guide an active scholarly research program involving undergraduate, MS, and PhD students in biology and related disciplines. The focus of candidates’ research specialization is open to all areas of biological sciences, but candidates with experience in cell biology, particularly mitochondrial functioning in vertebrates or plant cell signaling are especially encouraged to apply.  Successful candidates will be expected to teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses in biology and may be asked to teach and/or develop other upper-level biology courses within their area of expertise.  The successful candidates are also expected to develop and maintain independent, externally funded, and sustainable research programs as well as collaborate with multidisciplinary groups of faculty both within and outside the department as appropriate.

The Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences is one of six departments in the College of Science & Mathematics, which is also home to the School of Earth & Environment.  The welcoming faculty represent diverse backgrounds in the field and are deeply committed to student support and success.  The department serves nearly 1000 undergraduate and graduate students in the following programs:

More job opportunities for Japan's PhD graduates

People with doctorates have typically had little luck finding jobs in Japan where they can make use of their expertise. Corporate recruiters have often placed more priority on hiring fresh university graduates who can be trained from scratch, but now, some Japanese firms are changing their approach.

Major beverage firm Kirin Holdings set up a website to recruit PhD holders fresh from completing their studies or in mid-career. The company says the ratio of doctoral graduates hired for research posts in fiscal 2023 roughly doubled from a year earlier.

Kadota Tomoyuki of Kirin Holdings says " As a business, we are focusing on health science. We expect researchers from diverse backgrounds can create new value based on new ideas."

Chemical firm Asahi Kasei has been recruiting around 20 PhDs every year. It has been hiring year-round since 2023 to secure more post-doctoral talent.

The overall trend is still bleak, however.

The Japan Business Federation, or Keidanren, says less than 20 percent of firms that responded to a survey last year plan to hire more PhD graduates in the next few years.

The education ministry says the number of students advancing to doctoral courses has almost halved in around 40 years, partly due to the poor job prospects.

‘This is my 85th job application – and so far I’ve only spoken to AI bots’

I take a deep breath and click the start button. For the next 15 minutes, I will be interviewed for a job by a robot. 

Every word of my response to a series of interview questions will be scrutinised by artificial intelligence, using dozens of algorithms. 

A place on one of Britain’s leading graduate schemes could hang in the balance. Fail to impress and I’ll find myself on the rejection pile – along with thousands of other candidates. 

“Many companies are adapting to virtual interviewing to make the hiring experience more convenient to busy students,” a smiling woman tells me in a pre-recorded video at the beginning of the assessment. 

I am then given 30 seconds to prepare my first answer, which must be delivered in no more than three minutes. The AI bot asks me about my hobbies and whether I have ever faced difficulty working in a team. Responses can be re-recorded as many times as a candidate wants.

But a human recruiter is unlikely to ever see the footage. My answers are being tested by a computer against a set of criteria. This is increasingly how young people are being asked to take their first step on the career ladder.

The software I am using is a test version of a typical AI interview provided by HireVue, a virtual recruitment firm.

Companies including Unilever, Microsoft and Nestle have used AI to hire staff, and dozens more are said to be incorporating more automation into their hiring processes for top graduate jobs as competition grows more fierce. There were on average 86 applications for every vacancy in the graduate jobs market last year, according to the Institute of Student Employers, up 38pc year on year.

‘HR used to just pick applicants out a random’

AI interviews cut out the need for layers of HR and offer companies facing large numbers of applicants for roles a fairer way of creating a candidates shortlist, according to Tom Cornell, a psychology consultant at HireVue.

“A large part of it does come down to efficiency, particularly when you are dealing with volume,” said Cornell, who designs the interviews. “Rather than having a recruiter spend 30 minutes perhaps conducting a phone screening or reviewing a full interview, the AI technology passes through it in a matter of minutes and can provide some automated scoring.

“Especially the instances when you’re dealing with 1,000 applicants or upwards of 1,000 applicants, the ability to rank candidates based on the AI’s screening… is a huge efficiency gain.”

When faced with a huge number of applications, in the past some hirers would simply discard many of them. 

He added: “While, yes, it’s less personal than the face-to-face interview, more individuals are getting a chance to get past that initial hurdle that could be as simple as ‘well let’s just put half in one pile and half in the other, and proceed with one at random’.”

‘I’ve done 85 job applications and still have not spoken to a human’

AI interviews are proving so popular with firms for entry-level positions and graduate schemes that some students have complained of finding it increasingly difficult to secure a face-to-face interview .

When Kai completes a master’s degree at a prestigious university this summer, he hopes to find a job in banking. But despite having applied to 85 jobs and being invited to dozens of interviews he is yet to have a face-to-face conversation or phone call as part of an application.

The 23-year-old economics student said his search for a job felt “soulless”, and that being asked to attend an AI interview suggested firms simply did not care enough to properly interview candidates.

He said: “You have to remember that you’re not simply having a 15-minute, one-way conversation with a robot that’s judging you on a whole heap of inputs. 

“You’re doing this after giving hours of your time to an application process, most typically: completing a near 10-page application form, writing a supporting cover letter , answering various business-specific questions, as well an assortment of technical assessments if you’re so lucky as to make it through the initial screening.

“It’s a completely soulless experience that conveys a feeling of no care nor input from the employer’s side. I think what’s perhaps most concerning is the widespread use of them for graduate hiring nowadays.

“Having done everything you’re told to do to get a job – I achieved straight As and A*s throughout GCSEs and A-levels, obtained a strong bachelor’s from a reputable university, and am currently averaging distinction in my master’s programme – I am yet to speak to a real human after applying for over 85 graduate programmes,” he added.

‘You’re automating an experience that should be human’

Abby Robbins, of recruitment agency Yellowbricks, said that even a 10-minute phone call could be better for employers and candidates than using AI. 

She said: “If someone is coming out of university with lots of wonderful grades they still need to find their first job and to speak to someone who can give you a bit of perspective as to what the employer is really looking for.

“It has become a buzzword within recruitment to lean into AI, but you’re automating an experience that should be human. When we interview candidates we are trying to get a feel for how they will fit in our team [and] everyone comes from a different walk of life… Even if it’s just a 10 minute call with a candidate it will always be better. 

“We’re not letting someone speak to a human until a second or third interview. They have no clue about how they are being perceived. They are being forced to crack the code of ‘what does AI want to hear?’”

  • Communicate at the staff-level within the CPUC, utilities, intervenor organizations, and other agencies.
